EDITOR LYNDA PAPESCH

Creative cuisine Christchurch is blessed to have so many amazing culinary offerings, from local cafés, restaurants, bars, and gastro pubs. Choosing where to dine (and drink) can be a tough decision, so why not step out of your comfort zone, and explore new options while patronising old favourites too. Almost three years ago, my foodie/winemaker husband Justin

and I arrived to live and work in Christchurch, not knowing much about the city’s culinary offerings. Our solution was to spend an afternoon browsing the internet looking for options, and writing each one on a separate piece of paper. The names went into our ice bucket. Now, when we head to the city, we pull out a name, and try somewhere new. Of course old favourites still make the cut, although it really excites our tastebuds to discover a different dining experience. Naturally, we continue to add names to the ice bucket, and that’s where Metropol’s Dining Guide proves invaluable. Chocka full of eateries, it’s a regular ‘who’s who’ of established and new hospitality businesses for those who live here, those who visit, and anyone wanting somewhere quality to dine. As our city’s footprint grows, so does the number and variety of eating establishments serving up classic and contemporary dishes, including creative new takes on Kiwi favourites, so make the most of them. February and March are busy times locally, with several major events scheduled, and thousands of visitors predicted. Join them in enjoying our delectable local cuisine. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out pages 46-57 in this issue. Otherwise sit back, relax, and enjoy the read.

Pūtaringamotu A Christchurch park ranger has a special vision for an inclusive and enlightening experience at a beloved Riccarton heritage site.

M

ichael Steenson (pictured), the dedicated ranger at Pūtaringamotu/Riccarton Bush, is invested in the future of this natural haven. Thanks to a Masters degree in geography, he integrates local wisdom into the fabric of conservation planning and management. Guiding visitors and school groups through the bush, he has insights into refining the educational dimension of this vital space. While the Deans family narrative is prominent at the heritage site (through historic Deans Cottage), the perspective of the Ngāi Tūāhuriri, the hapū of the area, remains underrepresented. Michael highlights outdated signage and insufficient educational resources that currently hinder visitors from grasping the cultural significance embedded in this historically rich site. Michael notes, “The Deans family relationship with Ngāi Tūāhuriri was quite unique for the time,” underlining the connection where they rented the land and paid Māori workers on a par with their European counterparts, an unusual practice at the time. Despite the allure of sharing this narrative with international visitors,

Michael emphasises the importance of locals understanding the history beneath their feet. “I’d prefer to share the story with one local kid than with 1000 tourists,” he states. Michael draws attention to the practical challenges faced by certain demographics within the park. Uneven paths, courtesy of determined tree roots, pose obstacles for the elderly, parents with youngsters, and those with a disability, often hindering their ability to explore the bush freely. The Enhancement Project aims to address some of these issues with a brand-new boardwalk. With a commitment to making the Enhancement Project a reality, the campaign to raise funds will continue until the Pūtaringamotu team reaches its $2.4 million goal. Support the cause by contributing to the project today through the website below or by visiting the house in person. For added convenience, a payWave station for donations is in the lobby. Your support will play a vital role in preserving this essential piece of history and nature for generations to come.

riccartonhouse.co.nz 16 February 8, 2024 Metropol

Certain areas of the boardwalk have started to deteriorate; the concrete paths have become uneven, posing a tripping hazard. Additionally, the signage is outdated, providing visitors with limited information on the cultural importance of this special place.

The Future The Enhancement Project aims to achieve the following objectives: Integrate Ngāi Tūāhuriri values, associations, and narratives into the design, art, entrance experience, and interpretation of Pūtaringamotu/ Riccarton Bush. Improve the track system and infrastructure. Develop the Grove area to accommodate larger groups visiting Pūtaringamotu/ Riccarton Bush. Provide educational interpretation that encourages engagement and participation.

Donate Now To ensure the future of Riccarton Bush, $2.4 million is needed to fund the Enhancement Project. Your donation can help protect, conserve, and enhance this important heritage landmark far into the future.

Throw in a rookie minder cop who’s great with computers but scared of guns, and help from the desirable Destiny, whose past is even murkier than Frank’s… well, you just know things will go according to plan.

Strong characters, well-paced action, dark humor and cracking dialogue make Double Jeopardy an old-school crime novel with a surprisingly modern twist.

Swift-moving narrative, great characters and an action climax with a final emotional twist … Frank Winter is one hell of a hero.

New Zealand crime-novelist and police officer, Stef Harris took time out of his busy film production schedule to chat with Metropol writer Natalia Macrides-Pantos about life as a crime writer.

computer screen springs to life. A beating cursor, a story waiting to be written. Well-schooled fingers kick into gear. Time becomes irrelevant, especially when a veteran cop, no longer working the night shift, is hell-bent on finishing the first draft of his novel. A mug of cold tea sits, untouched. Stef Harris eases off the keys, and sighs. A pause. It’s good. Hands behind his head, he sits back reading. End of chapter. Time to sip from a cold cuppa. It’s awful. The tea is. The chapter is good. He smiles. This is how I imagine active-duty police officer and New Zealand best-selling author, film creator, director and producer Stef Harris. Writing somewhere quiet, away from the peculiar and chaotic, or equally mundane humdrum that everyday police work offers. Chatting writer to writer, I asked; Who is Stef Harris? What does it take to be a crime novelist? To answer these, we first need to identify the calm composure that police officers exude, add a ready chuckle, and a hardworking disposition wrapped in a friendly demeanour. Meet Stef, a writer from as early as “Form 4”, when he was competing against the man who became current Kiwi film

maestro, Sir Peter Jackson. Secondly, we need to see people as Stef does; a sum total of many aspects, separate from their jobs, and the actions that shape their lives. “We are not always what we do,” explains Stef. Relatable topics of human conflict make for intriguing moral questioning. Knowing this and understanding this, is what makes for great storytelling, and great stories need great characters. “You do tend to love your criminal character,” laughs Stef, who also answers to father of four, and husband. On top of those, he is a man who followed his passion and chased down his dreams. His latest book Double Jeopardy features a father whose daughter’s murderer is released from prison. What questions will this elicit for readers? you might ask. “Having written a book is like spending hours with someone, sharing your perspective,” explains Stef. “It’s very different from the collaboration needed for film making. If I’ve done my job right, my audiences will have something to think about.” Stef’s advice for writers is fourfold: Start. Tell a story. Practise the how and keep at it, if you want it enough.

his exhibition presents a retrospective of Trevor Askin’s works over the last 40 years. Trevor Askin works from his own studio and foundry in Timaru. He began sculpting in 1980, working mainly in representational sculptures. However, after about five years his work began to develop a freer and flowing style, enabling a fuller expression of life and movement. These works are without hard lines, which give the unique style its name ‘curvilinear’.

Listings $28.6 billion down

T

While Kiwis’ love affairs with property are far from over, a review of realestate.co.nz data from 2023 reveals it was a year where people sat on the sidelines, if they could.

he total value of residential property listed in 2023 was down by $28.6 billion, compared with 2022, as prices dropped and vendors paused. In 2023, $97,015,251,805 worth of property was put up for sale, which is the sum of asking prices on all residential dwellings listed on realestate.co.nz during the year. This was a substantial drop of 22.8% from the $125,601,880,575 listed in 2022. Some of the year’s real estate highlights include:

• For the first time in a decade, the national average asking price dipped below previous year. At $895,289, the national average asking price was also down by 6.6% from $959,034 in 2022.

• New listings nationally were down 12.1% on 2022, making it • •

a year of record new listing lows. The first seven months, and December, all recorded the lowest number of new listings for the month in 16 years of data (excluding during the April 2020 Covid-19 lockdown). All of 19 regions had fewer new listings in 2023 than in 2022. Buyers in Gisborne had the least choice, with the smallest number of new listings and the biggest year-on-year decrease for the second year in a row. Popular regions exempt from market correction were the West Coast, Central Otago/Lakes, and Marlborough, the only three regions to see year-on-year average asking price growth in 2023.

Liposuction procedures have come a long way in the last decade, making them a safe and effective option for achieving good facial and body contours.

L

iposuction with the tumescent technique was developed by surgical dermatologists to be a very safe and effective liposuction procedure, with only local anaesthetic. Dermatologist Dr Ken Macdonald, of KM Surgical, says tumescent liposuction is local anaesthetic surgery that has a quick recovery, and a high safety profile, compared to general anaesthetic liposuction. “This procedure can create attractive body contours in a safe and relatively painless way with quick recovery. If you have disproportionate bulges you hate, and if you have done your best with diet and exercise, but just cannot get the improvement you want, then tumescent liposuction can be the best solution,” he says. A leading Christchurch dermatology facility, KM Surgical offers cosmetic medicine and surgery, including liposuction, laser treatments of all sorts, and skin cancer treatments with Mohs surgery. “We can sculpt body areas, with precision, targeting stubborn fat pockets,” Dr Macdonald says, adding that it is important to note that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity, or a substitute for weight loss. KM Surgical’s Day Stay Facility, Avenue Health, at 202 Bealey Ave, Christchurch, provides the ideal setting for this procedure. Patients benefit from a state-of-the-art environment, with a focus on comfort and well-being, in a day stay surgery environment. “This approach minimises disruption to patients’ daily lives, allowing them to return home on the same day as the procedure, and to recover quickly,” Dr Macdonald says.

Hair turns grey at different ages, with some people starting to grey from their mid-20s to 40s.

H

alf of all people will exhibit significant amounts of grey hair by the age of 50. If greying occurs before the age of 30, it is known as premature greying. One scientifically-sound reason for this happening is genetics. If your parents developed grey hair young, chances are you will too. Other factors contributing to accelerated grey hair include long-term dieting, protein and nutrient deficient diet imbalances, as well as extreme mental and emotional stress. Early grey hair can suggest underlying conditions such as anaemia and thalassemia minor or iron, copper, zinc, and VitB12 deficiencies. “Frequent hair colouring utilising harsh chemicals incorrectly on scalps too young, can damage hair at a cellular level, altering the chemistry of pigment cells (melanocytes). These cells eventually stop producing pigment earlier than expected,” says Trichologist and Director of Hair and Scalp Clinic, HairMantra, Dr Padmaja Redekar. She recommends yearly scalp check-ups should be as routine as annual medicals. “At HairMantra you will receive expert advice with holistic lifestyle-oriented solutions, issue-specific products and supplements, and a home haircare treatment regime. Call us today and balance your hair health from the inside out,” Padmaja adds.

Science-based

skincare The term ‘skincare’ hit record highs on social media as a trend in 2023, and the popularity encouraged many brands, new and old, to jump on to the bandwagon creating skincare products.

T

hankfully, science is becoming the number one driver in skincare. Rightfully so, our skin deserves the best possible care, and noticeably now, most leading skincare brands publicise research and results from proven ingredients. Three key ingredients regularly pop up across the skincare board, and are worth checking off when buying your next product so you will benefit from their phenomenal properties. Hyaluronic acid might be a name you have heard in the skincare realm, for its hydrating and stretching powers for flexible skin and reduced lines and wrinkles. Retinol increases skin cell production, otherwise known as proliferation, while exfoliating, plumping, and reducing pores, a multi-tasking product.

38 February 8, 2024 Metropol

Vitamin C is an anti-inflammatory, and helps build an even complexion by reducing redness and dark areas, but its powerful properties mean it’s important to start use slowly. The advantages of using various skincare products often pops into our “beauty brains”, giving rise to probing questions such as what is worth trying and what is not, how many steps a skincare routine should encompass, and what are proven brands? At Metropol, we suggest starting with scientifically proven New Zealand brands such as Caroline Lorinet, Emma Lewisham, and Linden Leaves. These brands combine skincare technology with science-backed ingredients to assist in achieving flawless skin.

HABIT STACKING If you want to start a new habit and make it stick, stack it on to a regular existing routine so it becomes something you do automatically.

N

ew York Times #1 best-selling author James Clear redefined how to build better habits with his 2023 book Atomic Habits. James, with insight from a 2007 Oxford University study, highlights that the brain builds a strong network of neurons to support current behaviour and the more you do something, the stronger and more efficient the connection becomes. “There is a phenomenon that happens as we age called synaptic pruning. Synapses are connections between the neurons in your brain. The basic idea is that your brain prunes away connections between neurons that don’t get used and builds up connections that get used more frequently,” he says. You can use this to your advantage to build new habits. Identify a current habit you already do each day and then stack your new behaviour on top. Habit stacking is a special form of an implementation intention. Rather than pairing your new habit with a particular time and location, you pair it with a current habit. Designed to help you incorporate more healthy behaviours without disrupting your normal routine, habit stacking can be quite life changing, says James. For example, if you make your coffee every morning, as the blend brews, take this time to add some movement into your day, perhaps doing 30 squats?

Here are some other habits you can stack: When you brush your teeth in the morning, stack the habit of applying moisturiser with SPF to protect your skin for the day. When you arrive at work, have a glass of water to start off the day hydrated. When packing the fridge with new groceries, remove expired items at the same time. When getting changed out of your work clothes at the end of the day, get into your workout clothes to make the journey to the gym a little more seamless. When you take the bins out the evening before bin day, walk around the block before you go back inside. Once you have mastered this basic structure, you can begin to create larger stacks by chaining small habits together. This allows you to take advantage of the natural momentum that comes from one behaviour leading into the next. Our lives are made up of the tiny things we do every day. Carve out time to examine your routines, as stacking healthy habits can have exponential effects on your future health and wellbeing.

o you had a productive weekend in the garden, stacked the firewood, or dashed around the tennis court all Saturday afternoon. Ka pai! But, now it’s Monday and your back is more than a little annoyed at you. Sure, you can keep filling up the hotty, or microwaving the wheatbag, but then you have to sit still while you apply it. Yes, you can take some anti-inflammatories - but they don’t agree with everybody. What you need is something that will apply heat to the area, while giving you a relaxing, yet blood-circulating massage, all while you go about your daily business. The clever HeatPulse Back & Core Massager from Hydragun wraps around your mid-section and secures snugly with velcro. Once turned on, you have a choice of three heat settings and three vibration settings, all of which can be combined. Heat and vibration can be applied to the back, while heat can also be applied to the front of the belt, making it a great reliever of period pain. Vibration can be short and intermittent pulsing like a percussion massage, or a constant steady vibration. The third, some might say ironically, is similar to an SOS pattern. Supplying up to 3.5 hours of use, the control pack is easily removed and comes with a USB-C cable for quick recharging. As someone who plays a lot of sport throughout the year, the HeatPulse has been a miracle worker. Edible flowers and their trimmings are a simple way to add colour and charm to any dish.

dible is the key word here. Simply plucking a posy of pretty wildflowers is not the way to go. Many flowers are naturally poisonous, some will have been sprayed with chemicals and pesticides, or encountered toxic materials. Take your time and do your research if you’re picking wild, and choose homegrown or a trusted grower if you can, so that you ensure every part of any flower you are consuming is edible. Edible flowers can make food look good, and they can also add vitamin A, C, riboflavins, niacin, and minerals such as

calcium, phosphorous, iron and potassium that are beneficial to consumers’ health. Decorative flowers needn’t be limited to cakes and sweet treats. They’re worthy additions to salads, risottos, breads, pizzas, or dotted about a charcuterie board. Pop a few blooms into your ice cube trays for that something extra in your water bottle or next cocktail. Crystalise them, infuse into oils and butters, or use as a garnish on any and every meal. Picky eaters can simply remove floral decorations before eating.

Seen in our kitchens for decades, flowers are a natural supplement to many dishes, although the concept seems odd. Like lavender, nasturtium and pansies becoming common in a culinary experience, plenty of other surprising everyday flowers are edible. Carnation and rose petals, and

daisies can all be consumed, while the flowers of herbs such as sage, fennel, and chives, or vegetables such as zucchini, will also make colourful additions to your next dish. Flowers can be incorporated into any meal. An easy way to start is to add them to your toast

each morning. Switch different blooms in out and out, test flavour combinations, and experiment to notice those that most excite your tastebuds. Soon adding flowers, petals, and their flavours, to meals and recipes will blossom, and become second nature.

METHOD

Bread of preference, thick enough to hold multiple toppings

STEP 1: Toast a few slices of bread to your liking. STEP 2: Choose your toppings option and create some beautiful looking toast.

OPTIONS

OPTIONAL Avocado, smashed

Honey

Basil

Hummus

Blue cheese

Mini mozzarella balls

Cottage cheese

Nasturtium

Daisies

Pansies

Feta

Pecans

Fig

Pomegranate pearls

Fresh fruits like blueberries and strawberries

Prosciutto slivers Sundried tomatoes Violas

Spread a generous amount of avocado on your bread base. Sprinkle with feta and pomegranate pearls to add some cream and crunch. Finish with pansies, which offer a colourful topping, their flavour mild and sweet to complement the adjoining tastes. Start with cottage cheese. The creamy, yet sour tang goes well with a few fresh fruits on top. Think blueberries or strawberries, something seasonal. Complete with common daisies for the aesthetic, and to deliver a slightly herbal edge. To complement a base of blue cheese, top with classics like fig, prosciutto slivers and pecans. Drizzle with honey to even out the strong flavours. Finish with violas for an added sweetness, while not being too overbearing. Make it Margherita style! Hummus on the bottom, with sundried tomatoes and mini mozzarella balls scattered around. Round off these flavours with some basil leaves and a few nasturtium flowers to add some sweet and spice.

home & living

Come on in A home’s front door is often the first thing potential owners and visitors see, setting the scene and the expectation for what is inside.

T

hese days, it is easy to brighten up your front entrance with a lick of paint, new handles, or a brand new door. Homes, no matter what their style, should have a front door that makes a significant (or understated) impact right from the start, giving insight into the lifestyle of those who live there. Style, design, materials, and colour, should all be considered when choosing a front entrance door. Wood, fibreglass, glass, and steel doors come in an endless number of options, including custom-made. Choosing the right door material is also a factor to consider. Think about potential weather hazards, such as salty sea air, security needs, and what design styles work best with the home. Popular designs include doors with sidelights, panels, grilles, and dentil shelves. Combining some of these helps create unique doors. Remember that a gorgeous front entrance will help add value to your home, and enhance its kerb appeal.

QUICK FIXES

Upgrade the door handles. Install lighting around and/or above your entryway. Add landscaping and/or potted plants. Use the door’s colour to coordinate the rest of the entrance décor.

A kitchen’s touch Food is where the heart is. In other words, the kitchens in our homes have unintentionally become areas of togetherness and love for those closest to us.

M

aking it a space to love spending time in might mean calling the Dream Doors Christchurch team for a redesign and remodel. Owner Adrian Kay’s list of accolades precedes him, but his humble character has only one purpose, to continue bringing dream, reimagined kitchens to clients. He’s reminding Cantabrians to start thinking of their winter kitchen renovations soon. Time flies, and the colder months will be just around the corner in a blink.

Sustainability

Unsurprisingly, remodelling a kitchen comes at a much greater deal for the earth than replacing one. Less waste to landfill, more opportunity to repurpose or design for sustainability, make a much better choice for your wallet.

Storage

Functionality in a kitchen is a huge stress-saver. With Dream Doors designing your new kitchen, storage can become an easy addition to make future you a whole lot happier.

Style

A new style doesn’t mean an entirely new kitchen. Dream Doors’ ‘facelifting’ approach means a kitchen can be modernised or restyled to better suit a homes aesthetic. It’s the perfect option for those wanting a bright, better-suited space without the rest of a renovation.

Re-assign design fun

BY NATALIA MACRIDES-PANTOS

As 2024 slowly unravels, numerous design aspirations are being re-ignited giving rise to a renewed determination to decorate anew.

S

omething about entering the vibrancy of a new year begs us to chase the object of our design affections. Often, it’s more than that instinctive and necessary new year spring clear-out. Rather, it is the ear-marked idea pages from your favourite magazine, carefully placed on the coffee table, that now demand your immediate attention and implementation. Whether it’s a lick of fresh paint, an effervescent new wallpaper, bright new fabric prints for old cushions, or exciting re-upholstery for a well-loved armchair, embrace authenticity within the trends for interior design this year. Breathe fresh energy into rooms with each element. Every piece tells a story, what is yours in 2024?

Dopamine décor

Time to bid farewell to the ordinary and embrace the extraordinary. Dopamine décor is one term being echoed this year, as an aesthetic that triggers happiness and delight. This return to maximalism comes in stark contrast to the recent minimalism, encouraging homeowners to embrace bright, flamboyant décor. Choose from a wide variety of textures, rich colours, and complex patterns, embracing the beauty of imperfections and your unique preferences. Interior spaces become canvases for personal expression this year.

Retro rewind

The popularity of retro-inspired mustard and olive colours contradict bold colour palettes, yet still find their place in 2024. These earthy tones bring warmth to modern interiors with an eclectic spin, providing a blend of nostalgia and contemporary design, nicely suited to vintage-themed aesthetics.

Test with tech

Innovation redefines the essence of living spaces, and smart tech continues to revolutionise how we choose to live. Technology is set to seamlessly integrate into our surroundings this year, combining comfort and convenience. Options are evergreen, from tech-savvy voice-activated lighting and smart glass, to AI-driven home management systems, making daily life easier, slicker, and undeniably cooler. Homeowners are also investing in ergonomic furniture, soundproofing, and stylish design to improve functionality in home offices.

Go green

Increasingly popular green living is more a lifestyle than a trend. You can expect eco-conscious interior design taking a firm stance with biophilic elements, sustainable materials, and living walls, boldly competing with the technologically based living space evolution.

T

hat said, Lotus’ internal combustion is not going out quietly. Say hello to the Emira, the last petrol powered Lotus, and it is “fab”. The Lotus Emira brings the lineage of driver focused sports cars such as the Elise, Exige, and Evora, full circle. This last old school Lotus is available as either a mid-mounted supercharged 3.5L V6 or 2.0L turbocharged four cylinder, the latter of which is co-developed by Mercedes-AMG. My test drive Emira was the former, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Buyers can also option a six-speed auto for the V6 and an eight-speed DCT for the four pot. In terms of looks, Lotus has made the Emira look stunning. A combo of 20-inch v-spoke forged alloys, numerous ducts and intakes and the wide low stance of a textbook mid-engine sports car make the Emria look epic from all angles. Being the First Edition Emira, you get features like a tyre pressure monitoring system, two-piece brake discs with branded callipers, a premium KEF audio system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a 10.25-inch touch screen infotainment system and 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster. Lotus also throws in a “Drivers Pack” as standard, with Sports suspension and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. Slide inside and in typical Lotus fashion, it wraps itself around you. The leather and suede sports seats are comfortable and hold you firmly in place. The driving position is perfect, as is the way everything is laid out. So, what’s the Emira like to drive? Well, in two words, utter magic. Even around town, the supercharged V6 makes a range of lovely noises from burbling to a raucous six pot soundtrack at high rpm, something which one becomes rather addicted to after the first five minutes. You can even see the throttle cable moving in the rear view mirror every time you stand on the pedal. Whether in Sport or, if you dare, Track mode, the Emira enters its happy place. Throttle response is sharp and the hydraulic power assisted steering is so precise, giving some non power assisted feel. The six-speed manual transmission is a peach. A quick assertive throw not too far from that sports steering wheel and you can relive the process of supercharged induction and brisk acceleration again and again. Its 298kW may not sound like much, but given the size and relatively low weight of the Emira, this thing is spellbinding on the straights and hangs on like a cat on shag-pile carpet in the corners. What a last hurrah for Lotus’ internal combustion the Emira is. I really didn’t want to give this one back.

Torque Talk

GOING TOPLESS

BY BEN SELBY

“Summer breeze, makes me feel fine.”

W

hat springs to mind when we think of that iconic lyric from Seals and Crofts’ Summer Breeze song? For me, it’s a summer drive with the top down and not a care in the world. How often, however, do those with a convertible car actually go topless? It seems to be a common thing in Canterbury. Even on the most picturesque, warm summer day, or evening, that high-end convertible in the lane next to you has its folding

metal roof or canvas top fixed firmly in place. Sometimes, you may just want to have the über coolness of your aircon blasting at full chat and fair enough. Surely, however, the whole point of owning a convertible, or cabriolet, is the ability to drop the top and experience the warm wind rushing through your hair? That’s a philosophy I subscribe to. Unless it’s pouring down, put the roof down. You have a soft top, so enjoy it as much as possible.

WELL-ROUNDED DRIVING

With much fanfare, Honda says its new CR-V is all about “dreaming bigger”. Ben Selby reports.

F

rom a design point of view, the dream comes true for the sixth generation. It’s 80mm longer, 10mm wider, and sports a 40mm longer wheelbase thanks to all-new underpinnings. It’s a good-looking SUV, with a new honeycomb grill, rear spoiler, and either 18-inch or blacked out 19-inch alloys. Spec wise, the entry level Sport AWD starts at $53,000, the seven seat Sport 7 at $57,000 and my test car, the flagship RS e:HEV is $67,000. My RS e:HEV’s 2.0L petrol engine produces 109kW/183Nm, and the addition of two-motor electric drive gives 135kW/335Nm. The new CR-V mimics the Civic and ZR-Vs interior surroundings by giving a high-quality

feeling cabin, with durable switchgear. There are plenty of new features, and oodles of kit now coming as standard. The RS e:HEV combo of petrol and battery power not only feels meatier low down in the rev range, compared with the previous generation, the new CR-V is a far more refined in terms of the way it puts the power down. That’s thanks to a 50:50 or 60:40 depending on where the AWD is needed most. You can corner flatter than before, and harder should you want to. This is by far the most accomplished and well-rounded CR-V yet. Not just the most intuitive, it’s also the nicest to drive. It will be hard for Honda to top this one.

COMFORT

MIXING FLAIR WITH

Citroën have always made it their business to stand out and offer cars that blend quirky styling cues with forward thinking engineering. Ben Selby reports.

Y

ou only need look at icons like the DS, 2CV, and CX to get the drift. Citroën’s latest foray into the future of motoring takes the form of the e-C4. An all-electric variant of the Crossover SUV, the e-C4 on paper seems to follow the mantra previously described. In terms of quirky styling, it has it in spades. I love details such as the thin LED daytime running lights, and full width chrome-esque grill with those two flicks encompassing the Citroën emblem. It’s a nice blend of funky angles and svelte curves front to rear. The meat on the bone of this Gallic BEV is a 50kWh battery pack driving the front wheels. Power is rated at 100kW and torque at 260Nm. The e-C4 is compatible with both AC and DC fast charging, the latter of which will give you 80% charge in half an hour. WTLP statistics also put the max range of the e-C4 at up to 347km. Inside, the e-C4’s stylistic eccentricity continues in earnest. Toys on offer are decent, including a colour head up display, 10-inch touch screen infotainment system with 3D satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, wireless phone charging, heated seats, and an electric sunroof, to name a few. Interior space is also decent too for both front and rear passengers. Straight away it becomes rather obvious the e-C4 can serve up a comfortable ride. The softness of the Progressive Hydraulic Cushion Suspension gives the kind of floating ride which made big Citroëns of old, such as the aforementioned CX and DS, such a delight when traversing uneven road surfaces. Sure, those aforementioned icons have peak Citroën ride comfort, but at this price point and for a modern EV, the e-C4 is sumptuously impressive. Flick over from normal to sport mode and the e-C4 can make full use of those electric 100kW of power. Apply the go pedal, the nose rises ever so slightly and you waft forward nicely. It even holds well in the corners too. As a throwback to what made Citroën great while still aimed squarely at the future, it’s hard not be rather taken by the e-C4. Experience the eC4 for yourself at Armstrong’s Citroën Christchurch. Citroën NZ is running a promotion on eC4 demonstrators from $58,990 (inc ORC) for a limited time.
