North America d C ada here we c e

With North America being more accessible than ever for us Kiwis, let us highlight some of our favourite cities:

EAST COAST USA

New York: New York City is a bustling metropolis, home to over 8.5 million people making it the most densely populated city in the United States. Regarded as the spiritual home to some of the most influential artists and creatives of our time, the sheer number of galleries, theatres and eateries to experience is truly mind blowing. Alongside the most iconic landmarks in the world, it really is a must-see destination for any traveller.

If it’s having a slice of pizza at the world famous Lucali Pizzeria in Brooklyn or heading to the top floor of The Empire State Building in midtown Manhattan, we can give you all the insider tips to accommodate your energy levels!

Boston: Pack your walking shoes because this compact city is perfect to explore on foot. Begin your adventures in Boston with a leisurely wander through its neighbourhoods, each has its own personality and will reveal plenty about the charms of the city. Delve into the USA’s history on the Freedom Trail, which passes through 16 of the most important city sights – the American Revolution began here! Then just 10 minutes’ drive from the city is Cambridge, home to the famous Harvard University. Soak up the culture of academia or travel further afield and explore the stunning scenery at every turn in the New England region.

Washington, D.C.: Monuments, museums, impressive government buildings and home of the President of the USA – the White House. Washington, D.C is full of iconic landmarks. Clean and green, steeped in history and culture, this city is easy to get around. Take a walk up ‘The Mall’, an avenue of impressive sights from the Je erson Memorial and reflection pool, past the Washington Monument to the Smithsonian Institute, and onwards to the famous Capitol Building with its ornate dome rising in the landscape. Visit the Pentagon and of course the White House.

CANADA

Montréal: Old Montréal is European in character and the primary language spoken here is French. Cobblestone streets, a café culture and historic 17th and 18th century architecture all contribute to the quaint charm that is unique amongst cities in North America. So put on your walking shoes and head out to discover this beautiful city.

Québec: If you’re a first-time visitor to Québec, it may be worth writing on your hand: ‘I am in Canada’. The cobbled streets, 17th century houses, the walled cli top location above the St. Lawrence River and conversations taking place in French all around you - you may start to wonder which continent you’re on. With typically Gallic flair, the predominantly Francophone locals have created a year-round carnival atmosphere, with street performers, festivals, and exhibitions.

Toronto: Toronto is a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city with fun and enlightening things happening around every corner. Around half of all Toronto ‘locals’ were born somewhere else. Start wandering the neighbourhoods and you’ll find ethnic enclaves with the delicious food and fascinating culture that goes with them, and uniquely Canadian experiences too.

City mojo

The news is out. Christchurch is (arguably) the best city in New Zealand to live, work, and to play in, and visit.

All sorts of people call the city home, and among them is television and radio presenter Jack Tame. Earlier this month he took to the airwaves, on NewstalkZB to tell the

country that in his opinion, for the first time since 2010, his beloved city is now better than it was before the earthquakes.

Jack was on a visit to his home city, running around Hagley Park, when he had this light bulb moment.

A Cantabrian at heart, he says emphatically that Ōtautahi has crossed a threshold, and although it’s good now, it can evolve to be better.

For Jack it is a myriad of changes, including progress on the Cathedral, Te Pae Convention Centre, Tūranga library, the good food, cheaper housing than Auckland, the influx of young people, and the emerging shape and energy of the city.

Like many Cantabrians, he’s under no illusion that more hard work is ahead. Also like many of us, Jack believes that with continuing good leadership and planning, the city will rise to greater heights, especially with the projects such as Te Kaha.

I’m with Jack on that. As he says, “Christchurch has energy. Christchurch has mojo. Christchurch is better than ever.”

Ōtautahi has been my home for more than two years now, and even in that short time there have been many exciting changes, driven by people who are also true believers. Debate is essential for progress, and so too is Christchurch’s continuing evolution. Become a believer in our city.

G ma McCaw catching up with

8 June 22, 2023 Metropol
Image: Hazel & Cass Photography

The best way to describe Gemma McCaw’s life right now is, to quote her, “in the thick of parenting”.

These days the former Black Sticks wonder woman, Olympian, and women’s wellness coach is more likely to be found cuddling one of her daughters, as she is running around with a hockey stick in her hand.

Gemma and husband Richie welcomed their third daughter, Ella, in April; a little sister for Charlotte, who is four, and Grace, who is two. “Three kids under five is definitely full on,” she says, quick to add that her newest is “such a delight”, and it’s been lovely seeing the older girls embrace their new little member of the family.

Life in the McCaw household includes plenty of chaotic moments, yet Gemma wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m right where I want to be, and am keenly aware that this period of our lives is special. It’s time we’ll never get back,” she explains.

“I would say the past five years have been the busiest of my life, but absolutely the happiest, too. I find it incredibly fulfilling watching my babies grow.”

One thing Gemma did di erently this time around was to really focus on rest for the first four weeks after Ella was born. “I took time out from work, stayed at home mostly, and really just focused on our little family. Parenthood feels a lot like stripping life back to basics. It’s the simple things that count. Being there and being present is everything.”

took time out from work, stayed at home mostly, and really just focused on our little family. Parenthood feels a lot like stripping life back to basics. It’s the simple things that count. Being there and being present is everything.”

Gemma retired from hockey in 2020, but sport still plays a huge role in the way she approaches life. “The lessons I learnt being an athlete are with me every single day, like prioritising sleep, ensuring I exercise, and understanding the importance of good food.

“Sport teaches you so much about working together as a team, managing disappointment and building resilience, and they’re lessons that can be applied in all parts of life.”

She misses the connections made in sport, and being part of a team environment, but is now equally dedicated to Team McCaw family activities. One of her joys as a mother is encouraging the girls to learn by watching their parents, and being active. “My wish for them is that they’ll be involved in sport for life, regardless of what level they play at.”

On a personal level, Gemma finds inspiration from the amazing female role models she has had throughout her life. “My family and friends, and people I’ve worked alongside, I have learnt so much from many di erent women.

“Closest to home, my mum Michelle and nana Yvonne are my biggest inspirations. They’re the hardest workers I know, are incredibly selfless, and always give their time to others. They’re nurturing and loving, and the best examples of strong women I can think of. I know my maternal, nurturing traits have come from them.”

Reading other women’s stories also provides inspiration. “I get so much from learning about others’ perspectives, and not necessarily sportswomen. I love reading about people like

Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama, who’ve been through hard times but now help and connect with others.

“Often, I will see other women just going about their days, dropping their kids at preschool or rushing to work, and I admire them, too. As they say, ain’t no hood like motherhood. I think we can all learn from each other.”

On the business front, Gemma is excited about planning her first South Island women’s wellness retreat. To be held at a luxury Canterbury location from 24-26 November, the retreat will o er like-minded women the chance to step away from their hectic lives for a blissful three days of rest and rejuvenation.

Gemma will be joined by health and wellness experts to guide the group on “an unforgettable journey, allowing women to unwind and reset, and providing vital skills to take home with them for healthier and happier lives”.

“I love working with women, and I always say it’s often the smallest changes that can bring about the biggest results.”

“My top tips for women would be”:

Prioritise sleep and it will help you in every area of your life

Be present and always make time for your relationships – they are what make life meaningful. Move your body every day – something is always better than nothing.

Most importantly, I would urge other women to be confident in who you are. Don’t let anyone else’s opinion define you. You are a unique gift to the world, remember that!

The Briscoes Lady is so deeply embedded into Kiwi culture that she has already achieved icon status, popping into the lyrics of Don McGlashan’s ‘Marvellous Year’, being fantasised about in the play ‘Mamil’, having her face tattooed on to a Whakatane DJ’s leg, and, most recently, becoming a GIF.

On a personal level, while celebrity recognition undoubtedly has its downside, the upside is that it can be used as a tool for good, and paying it forward is something Tammy Wells is passionate about.

“In those early days with Christchurch City Mission, I did a lot with them. Nowadays, when an organisation invites me to speak about being The Briscoes Lady, I’m happy to do it but ask that they give a good donation to the City Mission.”

Tammy’s Briscoes Lady has so long proved herself the ultimate ambassador for the brand, that the temptation to ask if there is any particular instore merchandise that she covets above others is irresistible.

The question is promptly answered. “The linen sheets. Personally, when travelling for my work, I don’t like cotton sheets. They’re cold and noisy; whereas linen sheets are quiet

and warm. Briscoes linen sheets are my fave.”

Tammy describes herself as a private person who cherishes her downtime with family – her husband, Michael, and their two sons, who both recently married. “We adore our daughter-in-law and son-in-law and feel so blessed. It’s lovely to see them all in a settled and happy place.”

A typical day away from the cameras sees Tammy either before her easel, “I love creating with colour, and the colours that happen on the canvas - what comes out - it’s a learning curve in itself,” or working alongside Michael in the garden of the family home they have resided at for 38 years.

“Sometimes when I’m being The Briscoes Lady instore and meeting our wonderful customers, that’s amazing, but it’s also intense. As my character, I’m being hugged and photographed and filmed, so it’s lovely to return home to the peace and quiet and the bellbirds.”

As Michael has long championed Tammy’s career in front of the spotlight, Tammy is now championing Michael’s new career as a sculptor.

Michael’s sculpting began after his retiring from dairy farming and ramped up during lockdown. His Corten steel

artworks are drawn from shapes and forms in life, and range from small ornamental barbedwire bird nests through to magnificent large orbs, balls, and link-like structures.

Tammy says their property will open to Garden Clubs for the first time, this spring, showcasing Michael’s work.

“Corten steel looks beautiful amongst green surroundings. Nature has so much rust colour in itself.”

Work and home-life aside, another burning question that needs to be answered is what is Tammy’s secret to looking so vivacious?

there being The Briscoes Lady and suck it up and think okay, and just go with it, because it is what it is.”

For Tammy, the most important thing is to embrace who you are and how you look “Because there is no one quite like you, and that’s what makes you special and di erent.”

“Sometimes when I’m being The Briscoes Lady instore and meeting our wonderful customers, that’s amazing, but it’s also intense. As my character, I’m being hugged and photographed and filmed, so it’s lovely to return home to the peace and quiet and the bellbirds.”

“Number one is smiling. Smiling is key because smiling lifts your face. I’m also lucky that I have a team doing my hair, my make-up, my clothes, and fabulous lighting guys.”

“If I had a dollar for the number of times people say to me ‘Oh, you look so young –pause – on television’. And you have to stand

Tammy says that having an inner contentedness helps too. “Surround yourself with good people who help to lift you up. Realise that you are beautiful as you are. Youth is beautiful, but so is age. All ages are beautiful. We need to make the most of the age we are at.”

As for retirement, there are no plans for that.

“My employer at Briscoes said to me right at the start that he visualised us both still going strong into our old age. So, as long as I can keep going and they keep saying, ‘Let’s get Tammy up to Auckland’, I will still be The Briscoes Lady.”

Rosie Kelly played for the winning side, Matatū, in last year’s inaugural season of Super Rugby Aupiki, but now there’s a new jersey on the horizon for her.

Sporting a Black Ferns jersey didn’t seem possible until Rosie shared a room with women’s rugby legend Ruby Tui at a provincial nationals sevens tournament. While her brother initially introduced Rosie to the game, it was Ruby who initiated the dream.

“That’s when I found out she was from the West Coast,” laughs Rosie.

For Hokitika born and bred Rosie, connecting with someone who followed a similar pathway and ended up a household name was a defining moment in her fledgling career. She describes that realisation as “crazy,” and reminded herself “you can definitely be there too.”

Growing up on the coast, Rosie could be found outside, playing games with her brother and friends, and learning any sport she could. “I was the ultimate tomboy,” she says. Her brother was three years older and her dad was the coach of his team, and while the level of rugby was out of her league, she always joined in.

“I definitely looked up to him throughout my childhood. I was in awe of him.”

That coaching expertise and fatherly support helped push Rosie to reach for the stars. In the rain after school when everyone else was inside, Rosie was training, her dad reminding her that “nothing comes easy”. She labels it as her “fondest and almost worst memory at the same time”, saying that the work ethic she gained from her dad was a catalyst in achieving her goals.

Fast-forward, and with hard work comes big returns. Just one week after Super Rugby Aupiki ended, Rosie was ready to jump

a life-changing phone call. Rosie was asked to re-think her Japan contract because she was being o ered something a whole lot better. The rest of that phone call blended into a haze of excitement and shock. “It was a crazy week of emotions,” she says.

Now on a full-time rugby contract, Rosie’s days are di erent, yet just as busy as her years balancing study, work and training. Travelling with her teammates, gym, speed and mental skills analysis sessions, leadership workshops and club rugby, it’s hard to believe that she has any free time.

When she does, it’s “anything but rugby”. A qualified physiotherapist, Rosie dreams of eventually applying her knowledge to a high-performance team, although for now she’s focused on embracing the experience she’s worked so hard to be a part of.

Making so many new rugby connections has been great, she says. “I’m literally now working every day with my best friends. They’re not just teammates.” She still has friends on the field who she made after moving to Christchurch Girls High School, aged 13, for its women’s rugby programme.

Opportunity hasn’t come without pressure though. Rosie says that the hardest part has been finding a life/rugby balance. After a “go-go-go” 2022, she finds she now has more time training with the Black Ferns to focus on her game and skills, and she’s learnt to schedule downtime into each day to feel connected, motivated and present. “It’s about letting myself be happy, remembering that nobody is perfect, and being my own person.

“I’ve got to be myself. That’s what got me my contract.”

This is the second home Cameron and his team have sold for us and we continue to be impressed with his work ethic and positive attitude. He is Number One for a good reason. We felt completely looked after and supported throughout the campaign.

How to: school holidays

Nothing is worse than trying to entertain excitable, energy-filled littlest loves at home.

Metropol has you covered with these suggestions.

To educate and excite, get out and about to one of Christchurch’s local animal parks. Hand-feed a variety of di erent wildlife, take a guided tour, and learn about some of New Zealand’s native species. On a winter theme, visit the huskies and penguins, and jump aboard a Hägglund at the Antarctic Centre for an immersive and icy experience.

Warm up again with a meal at one of the

many food markets just minutes away.

If you encounter some warmer weather, the Christchurch Tram allows hop-on, hopo sightseeing of the city’s best bits, and children ride free. Beginning at Cathedral Junction, with stops at the picturesque Avon River and New Regent Street, and Margaret Mahy Playground, Botanic Gardens and Tūranga Christchurch Central Library to keep the young ones busy, the restored heritage trams are a must-do.

If you’re a parent who’s ended up with all the children, there are some great activities available to excite, and tire them out.

LOOKING FOR A UNIQUE NIGHT OUT?

The city’s go-karting and arcade complexes make for family fun, and are an ideal destination for an all-day extravaganza. Or utilise the mini-golf scene, putt with dinosaurs in a fully wheelchair accessible 18-hole course or with the Mad Hatter and friends, there’s plenty of options for some friendly golfing competition.

Trampoline arenas equate to a tonne of fun for young (and old). Sit back and watch the fun, or join in and show them how it’s done. Time short? Treat yourself to a rapid, interactive game of laser strike to promote coordination, and ENJOY!

Myopia is where the eyeball is too long or too powerful, resulting in blurred far vision, with close objects clear within a certain range.

Your optometrist will identify key risk indicators for the need to slow down the progression of myopia through management options.

Slowing down myopia prevents the higher risks of eye disease such as glaucoma, retinal detachment, and cataracts, later in life. An annual vision consult is recommended to keep track of any changes that may occur.

With outdoor options often ruled out, it would be wonderful to balance the inevitable screentime with something super fun, skill building, and educational.

Fitting the bill entirely is the bespoke children’s holiday course at the International Culinary Studio. Director Cheryl Cordier, who has a background in education, says “we combine the joy of creating with food, the life skills of knowing your way around a kitchen, and of course the children are getting practical experience with their reading and maths as they interpret the recipes.”

While having fun together, children learn about hygiene, safety, and good kitchen practice. “We also focus on learning to make healthy food, along with a few treats,” says Cheryl.

Menus include bread to go with a country vegetable soup, pasta with beef sauce, and stu ed chicken thigh with skewered vegetables, all made from scratch. Pizza and cupcakes are a highlight, as is creating full chocolate mouldings, which are ideal for gift giving. “Perhaps the most wonderful of all is the children learning to leave the kitchen sparkling clean,” says Cheryl. Enrolments can be made via the events tab on the website.

Taking a holistic approach to balancing screen time with physical activities is recommended by Iris Xu at Anstice Optometrists. Living, working, and studying in a world of screens for most activities is never going to go away says Iris, so encouraging more social and physical activity away from screens balances the close visual strain our eyes endure daily.

Check out the website www.mykidsvision.org for information and resources about controlling myopia, and for a myopia risk assessment tool.

DINO DEVOTION

Christchurch’s dinosaur-themed park is a fan favourite. Jurassic Adventure’s animatronic dinosaurs and all-accessible attractions have won the hearts of many Cantabrians, and here’s what they have to say.

Tash Kees says, “This maze has been built for everyone and people with disabilities like Aiden can also enjoy it too. They support Hapai Access Card holders any way they can, to make a di erence to your experience here. We will be back and be back again.”

Laura O’Brien says, “really cool wee course! Loved to see that it was wheelchair accessible so caters to those who may otherwise miss out. Dinos for the win!”

Jasmine Butcher says, “I 100% recommend this place to any dinosaur lover. My family and I enjoyed every second of the course. Each hole was well put together and enjoyable for golfers of any level. The live dinosaurs look amazing and I loved how movement was added to make them feel even more realistic. Beautifully done. 10/10!”

Jessie Gemmell says, “I highly recommend this place. For 10 years as a youth worker, I never found a course that was 100% accessible, and now you’ve done it. I’m a major Jurassic Park fan so this place gets my vote!”

NEW HANMER TRACK

The Te Tihi o Rauhea/Conical Hill Loop Trail is around 6kms long, taking between 90 -120 minutes to walk.

The trail can be accessed from several points and the signs (such as the one pictured) can be followed in either direction.

For instance, if starting at the Cenotaph the walk goes up the rise into Hanmer Springs, north through the oaks crossing Jacks Pass Road into the centre of town crossing the road opposite about the 4 Square. From there it proceeds north to the top of the hill, and it is recommended you turn left at the top to the lookout.

Once back on the track, walk north again for a short distance and descend

the east side turning left onto the Majuba Track. This is a steep section which may be omitted if you walk in the other direction.

At the bottom the walk passes two woodland ponds and a wetland area, down a set of stairs, crosses Jollies Pass Road, heading on to Brooke Dawson Reserve, and Leamington Street back to the Cenotaph.

Hanmer Springs Community Board member Chris Hughey says he came up with the idea a few years ago, designed the route and the signs for it, and the board agreed to fund it. The Hanmer Springs Track Network Group was given the project to bring it to fruition.

Market THE CURRENT BUSINESS

That is certainly the case for Athol McCully and Cecilia Xiao of NAI Harcourts, Christchurch City Commercial. They say that right now they are seeing a lot of new interest from people seeking to buy businesses in the Christchurch area and many businesses are going under o er.

“As we are aware,” adds Athol and Cecilia, “Christchurch is a great place to live and it seems that the word has spread. The modern city we now have is a real attraction, along with highly reputable

Working on behalf with another agent.

Our Agency Agreements are usually Sole Agencies, which means that we are the only Business Broker with the business for sale. In this way we act as the “gatekeeper” for that listing, so that our Vendor needs to deal with just one Broker, making it easier for them.

However, our aim is always to obtain a good result for our Vendor, and so we are always open to “working in” with a Broker or agent from another Company. Similarly, we may approach Brokers from other agencies if they have a business advertised which might

Athol and Cecilia have some pertinent advice for businesses thinking of going to the market. “It is a good time to seek an appraisal of the current market value of your business as a forerunner to going to the market.” As business brokers we can o er obligation-free appraisals to those

In these cases a “work-in rate” is established between ourselves and other Brokers (agents), so that the Vendor pays just one commission which is shared between the Brokers – the Vendor does not need to pay both Brokers.

When engaging a Business Broker, a prospective Vendor should ask if the Broker will be prepared to work in with other Brokers, as this can speed up the sale process, and ensure that those in the market to buy are not being sidelined.

Weaponising sexual abuse claims

The Ministry of Justice New Zealand Crime and Victims Survey claims 94% percent of sexual assaults are not reported to Police. However what is rarely commented on is the weaponisation of sexual abuse claims, which overwhelmingly puts men at huge risk.

Recently I dealt with a client who went to a social function, and drank more than he should have, before encouraging a lady to join him and his work colleagues in a drinking game. The lady declined his invitation, and soon after commented to security that she felt this person had invaded her personal space (which was undeniably true). A few weeks later my client’s (male) manager turned her comment into an allegation of sexual abuse, even though the lady involved never made a written complaint about anything to anyone, and there were no witnesses, only a second-hand report of what a security guard had allegedly said. My client (married with children) was devastated, and resigned from a well-paid job with a well-respected employer.

One could rightly argue that he’d been exceedingly foolish, and the author of his own misfortune, but that minimises his manager’s decision to make a devastating allegation, without any actual evidence. To fight such an allegation was likely to be career damaging, regardless of the outcome. The result was a high performing and wellregarded colleague was removed from the workplace, we suspect because he commented a little too often that his manager was not doing his job very well. Be warned…

Agile workspaces

Modern workplaces have evolved significantly during the past three years, catering for di erent work styles, hours and needs. Enter the hybrid – or agile –workplace.

Essentially these digitally enhanced spaces support hybrid work forces and also new work styles.

To support those environments, today’s workplace demands require a new approach to organising and right-sizing business real estate, whether you need to bring everyone back, just a few, or to implement a customised hybrid programme.

Why go agile? Recent research showed that many businesses globally are using as little as 20 percent of their o ce space, now that more people are remote working, spaces were found to be the wrong size, or not designed e ciently, indicating huge ine ciencies in use and related costs.

Ricoh NZ designs, configures and rolls-out digital workspaces, enabling business teams to collaborate e ectively and get more out of their day, wherever they work. This also makes it easier to engage with customers remotely using Microsoft Teams and Zoom technology.

It’s not only about big ideas and it’s not only about thinking outside the square. Small ideas are just as powerful. To find out how to achieve big leaps through small steps, give me a call on 021 675 873.

The view from the top

We’ve been anticipating it for a while and now it looks like we’ve arrived at the peak of interest rates – and what will probably be a turning point in the market.

In late May, the Reserve Bank raised the OCR (O cial Cash Rate) by 0.25 basis points, a move that came as no surprise to anyone. At the time, they signalled every intention of holding the OCR at that level for the next 12 months. It remains our belief, however, that by the end of 2023, interest rates will be on their way down, albeit gradually.

There is a feeling of change in the air. We are seeing borrowers begin to act in anticipation of interest rates reducing. We’ve particularly noticed a change with property investors. They’ve been very, very quiet over the past 18 months. In the last few weeks, this market has really begun picking up.

Investors and home buyers alike will also take heart in the easing of LVR restrictions that took place on 1 June 2023.

All in all, the market is poised for an upswing, though not as dramatic as we have seen in recent years.

Metropol has partnered with many of Canterbury’s successful and longstanding businesses during the past 25 years. As we celebrate this milestone, we want to highlight some of the people who have trusted us to provide a direct line to their customers. To our valued clients and readers, we extend our heartfelt gratitude, and eagerly anticipate bringing you many more exciting magazines in the future. A huge thank you.

“We began with Metropol in 2019 and share in the celebration of what 25 years in business takes. Advertising in Metropol has increased our enquiries and clients nationwide, which only continues as more customers become aware of our brands. We advertise both Food & Health Standards and Auditing Solutions in Metropol. Auditing Solutions features in the cuisine section and we are delighted to receive enquiries and increased tra c on our website from this. Metropol takes the time to understand our businesses and what we want to achieve. Our relationship is excellent, which has made the journey seamless throughout the years.”

Metropol gives us an opportunity to support and reach a local database that not many other publications do. With their growing coverage and audience, we’ve noticed that Trenzseater now reaches throughout the South Island with Metropol Their targeted advertising hits our demographic and does what we want it to do. Over the last 12 months, the magazine has really developed and our advertisements have been incredibly polished. We have a great relationship with the people at Metropol and that’s why we continue our advertising. They always make sure we are looked after, with added value like editorials.”

“We’ve been with Metropol for over 12 years and it’s been a lovely way to connect with people in the local area and in Christchurch, and explain what we can do. Lorraine has been consistently helpful over that time and is great to work with. Metropol’s distribution reaches the right people for us, especially through local cafés and in the Merivale area.

What makes Metropol stand out is that the magazine distribution is read and engaged with by the public, they have got that certification. Many new clients at Transform Clinic say they saw our beauty report or read an advert in Metropol.”

Selwyn stretches across the beautiful Canterbury Plains and is just west of Christchurch central. It’s bursting with activities, and is the gateway to every winter-lovers dream with six ski fields offering some uncrowded slopes and great terrain.

Just over an hour’s drive from Ōtautahi, the ski fields are located along the Great Alpine Highway. The huge variety of options means you’ll be spoilt for choice if you’re wanting to do some laps. It’s also a great way to check out and get close to the snow for those that don’t ski or snowboard.

Each of the ski fields have their own

quirks and the best thing is that they’re so close to town, you could go for a day trip or spend a night. There’s plenty to see and do along the way – you’ll be driving past some of the country’s best pie shops –and Selwyn is known for its artisan food and drinks, lovingly prepared using local ingredients.

If you’re going overnight, Forest Lodge is a great spot to park up with prime

accessibility to the fields.

This o -grid accommodation is nestled in native beech forest – sitting 900m above sea level, you’ll get to enjoy the crisp mountain air. One of the highlights of the lodge is its stunning natural outdoor ice skating rink – BYO skates or koha to hire.

The button-down shirt is the epitome of office-chic.

Reinvented and restyled over time, there’s no doubt in saying that it’s a forevergiving item in a workwear wardrobe. From linen to poplin, the button-down shirt is a comfortable, lightweight, and easy to wear garment that looks modest, sharp and feminine all at the same time. Think simple with a classic white silhouette or bend the rules with

frills and abstract collars. Exercise the French tuck to give your look shape, and experiment with the number of done-up buttons. Leaving it open creates an e ortless overshirt. Layer with knitwear, a long sleeve knit over a shirt makes a statement of a collar, while layering with a sweater vest is a playful way to liven up your look.

PURPLE REIGN

The colour “Digital lavender” has o cially been named by American trend forecasting website WSGN—along with its sister company Coloro— as 2023’s colour of the year, trending big for spring the world over.

Prominent in international fashion collections in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, purple is a versatile, gender-inclusive colour that is easy to style, and has a shade for everyone. As a colour with both warm and cool undertones, it works well with almost any other colour, although especially pops when paired with black, white, or denim blues. Also try it with pink, gray, black, and brown.

Did you know?

Culturally purple is often associated with wealth and royalty. The thinking behind this is that the Phoenician purple dye used historically, was rare and expensive, a ordable only to the rich.

and ensure I have support around me to do so. When I’m at home with the kids, I want to be really present, and they will always be my priority”.

Accepting that there is no such thing as a perfect balance has helped Gemma accept some of the harder days.

“When life gets stressful, I will tell myself ‘It too shall pass’, and that really helps. Equally, on the days when everything falls into place, I try to really enjoy them.

“I know how lucky I am to be in a position where I can work part time, with a husband [All Black great Richie McCaw] who is incredibly supportive with my career and goals.

ALWAYS

“My biggest advice for working mums is to prioritise sleep. Women have a huge amount on their plates, and it’s impossible to juggle it all when you’re running on nothing. Sleep can go such a long way to ensuring we’re at our best.

“It’s also important to remember that we don’t need to be perfect, and it’s okay not to have everything in order. This morning I chose to go for a run with the pram instead of cleaning up the house first. It was a mess, the beds were unmade, there were oats all over the bench, but I knew I’d feel so much better if I got a bit of exercise in. And I did, it set me up for the day and I feel good. Housework can always wait.”

bowel cancer BEATING

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness month, and throughout Aotearoa people have been participating in the Move your Butt campaign to raise funds to help Kiwis beat bowel cancer. Last year’s challenge raised nearly $170,000 towards bowel cancer research, awareness, education, support and advocacy.

The disease is treatable (and often beatable) if caught early, making it essential that as many people as possible are aware of the symptoms, says the Bowel Cancer New Zealand organisation.

“Symptoms may come and go, so don’t wait if you have any of these concerns, no matter what age you are,” says a spokesman. “See your GP right away.”

While bowel cancer is more common in the 50 years + age group, it a ects people of all ages. If told that you are too young to have bowel cancer, seek a second opinion, the organisation recommends.

The National Bowel Screening Programme is available for eligible men and women, aged 60 to 74.

Bowel cancer, sometimes called colorectal cancer, is cancer in any part of the large bowel, which includes the colon and rectum, and starts with the abnormal growth of cells into lumps or tumours. Risk factors include aging, smoking tobacco, being overweight or obese, drinking alcohol, not exercising often, having Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis for more than 10 years, and a family history.

FACTS

The incidence of bowel cancer in New Zealand is one of the highest in the world.

More than 350 people under 50 are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year.

Estimates are that one in every 18 New Zealanders will develop bowel cancer in their lifetime.

Men are at increased risk of bowel cancer than women.

SYMPTOMS

These may include:

Bleeding from the bottom (rectal bleeding)

Change of bowel motions/habits that come and go over several weeks

Anaemia

Severe persistent or periodic abdominal pain

A lump or mass in the abdomen

Tiredness and loss of weight for no obvious reason

STEPS TO TAKE

Numerous studies have indicated that a diet too rich in red meat and processed foods can heighten the risk of bowel cancer. To help prevent bowel cancer enjoy a wide variety of:

Nutritious vegetables, legumes (dried beans, peas, lentils)

Fruits and cereals (breads, rice, pasta and noodles)

Lean meat, fish and poultry

Milks, yoghurts and cheeses, choosing reduced fat varieties where possible.

Metropol June 22, 2023 47
www.bowelcancernz.org.nz
Every year more than 3000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer, and at least 1200 people will die from the disease, making it the second most common cancer in New Zealand.

A central physio hub

We now have an urban centre with innovative and bold developments, the results of fresh ideas and big thinking. The city is far from complete yet. Another project that is causing considerable excitement in the community is the construction of the new YMCA (the Y) facility on Rolleston Ave.

Especially interested in this development is Muscle People, Physiotherapists. “We’ve been a long-time partner of the Y,” says Charise Walter, Muscle People’s Practice Manager.

“Our city practice is co-located in the Y’s building, and we share a common vision of empowering members of the community to get the most out of life. Both of our organisations like to provide a warm, welcoming environment where everyone is treated with respect, and can feel comfortable. The new building increases the amount of space we have to o er all our services. The building is scheduled to open in October.

“That’s not long to wait. To say we are super excited would be an understatement.” In the meantime, the city practice is in the current YMCA building right in the heart of town, and close to all the city attractions. It hums with activity across its various programmes and services. The energetic team of physios treat a range of ailments, from sports and work injuries, headaches, and migraines, and back and neck pain, to postural problems, arthritis, pre and post-operation rehab and concussion. Physiotherapy is the core of what they do. No matter the problem, they can help you move from pain to performance and gain a healthier way of life.

Muscle People runs a variety of training programmes:

Functional Training

Designed to improve movements that directly relate to your everyday life or sport, by enhancing the coordinated working relationship between the muscular and nervous systems. This is exercise with purpose.

Running Assessments

Gives guidance that will improve your running technique, building a foundation of quality movement, therefore reducing the risk of ongoing injuries.

Dynamic Spine programme

A well known programme, the Dynamic Spine programme has been developed to strengthen the core, which in turn supports the strength, mobility, and healing of the spine. Neck, upper back, and lower back pain as well as core and postural weaknesses are all addressed within Dynamic Spines. This programme is currently on o er at the Bishopdale and Wigram clinics and will return to the City Clinic soon.

The face of our central city has changed dramatically as the rebuild of Christchurch has progressed.

It’s a history of which Dean and Head of Campus Professor Suzanne Pitama (Ngāti Kahungunu/Ngāti

Whare) is suitably proud.

“In this, our 50th year, we celebrate both where we have come from, how we have grown and flourished, and pay homage to the dedication and success of those who’ve helped shape our campus and gone on to achieve professional and academic success on the national

and world stage.”

The original student cohort of 43 has grown to over 1000, representing over 20 nationalities, engaged in more than 50 programmes. The campus also boasts over 35 research groups working collaboratively alongside Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury.

The celebrations kicked o in March with a formal academic welcome and picnic in Hagley Park, followed by a June

evening showcase for civic leaders and key stakeholders. The public will be invited to a series of four public health talks in July and August, and celebrations will conclude with an end of year event in November.

Professor Pitama believes that the last 50 years have created a legacy of growth, development, initiative, innovation, and forward momentum on which to build.

Over the past five decades, more than 5000 medical students, along with numerous health professional and research students, have completed their training at the city’s renowned “health university”.

Beer for man’s best friend

Your dog is a member of the family and should be treated as such. If you could enjoy New Zealand’s favourite drink, beer, with your furry friend, you would, right?

The good team at Wigram Brewing Co have sorted this with their range of Dog Beer. Developed with their own dog, Blitza, and the ritual of sharing a beer with your mates, in mind, the lipsmacking doggie draught was created.

“We did a bit of research as to what could go into our Dog Beer – what would

be super tasty and also good for them at the same time,” says Caroline McGurk, at Wigram Brewing Co. “We went ahead and developed the recipe using the Little Bone Broth Company’s broth, added a few secret ingredients, vigorously tested it on a handpicked panel – Blitza and friends – elevated the data, and Dog Beer was born.” The team have been amazed at

Exploring Wigram

Southwest of Christchurch’s city centre, Wigram has experienced considerable growth during the past decade.

Today it is home to a variety of cafes, restaurants, licensed premises, and retail outlets, with a population of 11,102 just a year ago.

While close to Hornby’s retail zone, Wigram has its own expanding business hub, in addition to a variety of new and established housing developments. Post-earthquake, it is one of the region’s fastest growing satellite towns.

Named after a former mayor of Christchurch, Sir Henry Wigram, the suburb is largely known for its links to the region’s aviation history. Sir Henry established a flying school there in 1916, which was bought by the then government seven years later, and run as a military airbase.

In June 1923 the base was o cially handed over and renamed Wigram Aerodrome.

Home to RNZAF base Wigram, until military cutbacks closed it in 1995, it has since been developed into housing and an industrial estate, although it still houses the popular Air Force Museum of New Zealand.

how many people want to share beer with their canine companions, and how well it has been received by thirsty pets. It is currently stocked at pet supply retailers around the South Island, and you can also pick it up at the brewery. The team’s best mate’s match is a can of Dog Beer for your doggo and a can of their new Aviator APA for yourself. Yum.

Did you know?

The first trans-Tasman flight landed at Wigram in September 1928, piloted by Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm. It had taken o from Richmond, near Sydney, and was welcomed at Wigram by a crowd of 30,000 people.

Chicken and Pork terrine

Closer to a meatloaf than a pâté, with chunkier forcemeat, a terrine is a tasty treat as a starter, part of an antipasto platter, or served with a salad for lunch. This is a basic recipe, where chicken can be substituted for turkey, and raisins, pistachios, hard boiled eggs, and even cranberries, can be added to the mix.

INGREDIENTS

1 Tbsp olive oil, plus extra to brush

1 onion, finely chopped

2 Tbsp brandy, optional

12 rashers smoked streaky bacon

2 skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1cm pieces

500g pork mince

50g pistachios, roughly chopped

50g dried cranberries, or raisins

3/4 Tsp freshly grated nutmeg

2 thyme sprigs, leaves picked o

Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD

Serves: 8 to 10 | Prep Time: 30 mins | Cook Time: 2 hrs 10 mins

1

2

Heat the oil in a medium pan and gently cook the onion for 10min until softened. Add the brandy, if using, and bubble for 30 seconds, then tip mixture into a large bowl and set aside to cool.

Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan). Use about 10 of the bacon rashers to line the inside of a 900g loaf tin with bacon, leaving excess hanging over the sides. Add remaining ingredients to onion mix, and season to taste. Mix together.

3

Press the mixture into the loaf tin, levelling the surface. Fold any overhanging bacon over the filling; cover with remaining rashers. Press down again to make sure the surface is smooth. Lightly oil a small sheet of aluminium foil and press on top of the loaf tin. Wrap tin well in a further double layer of foil, then put into a roasting pan.

4

Half-fill the roasting tin with boiling water, and transfer to oven. Cook for 90 minutes until the terrine feels solid when pressed. Remove from oven and unwrap the outer layers of foil, leaving the greased foil layer in place). Pour out any excess liquid, and leave to cool.

Sit the loaf tin on a plate, and put a clean brick (if you have one), or several full food cans on top of the terrine (resting on the foil layer). Chill overnight. 5

To serve, preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan), unmould the terrine on to a baking tray and lightly brush with oil. Brown in the oven for 20-25 minutes. Slice and serve warm, or at room temperature.

TIPS

Hard boil three eggs and layer through the middle of the terrine before baking.

Add one tablespoon each of orange and lemon zest to the mix.

Swap brandy for an orange liqueur.

Oliver, the youngest son of owner and founder David Musgrave, developed eczema. This became so itchy that he would scratch himself day and night, to the point of bleeding.

A family acquaintance, who was importing Canadian flax seed oil, gave David a bottle of that oil. Within days of Oliver taking the flax oil, there was an improvement in his condition.

An itch-free week went by and suddenly, life had become hugely di erent for the family. In 1994 David then started growing and pressing flax seed oil himself, a process that continues today, albeit on a larger scale.

In 2016 Waihi Bush Organic Farm developed its gourmet range for those looking for healthy whole foods and edible oils.

Pumpkin and chia seed oils were introduced, along with an ethically harvested organic coconut oil. More was to come. With the rules around the growing of hemp changing, Waihi Bush Organic Farm now contracts growers to produce organic hemp seed in New Zealand.

Truly this is a company with a strong culture of research and development, driven by passion and integrity to enhance people health.

underneath the Lampli t

For creating a mood and atmosphere, lamps play a more important role than almost any other furnishings. For instance, one of the easiest ways to light a dark corner in your bedroom, or add atmospheric lighting to your living-room area, is to use a table or floor lamp.

The style and colour will possibly be the hardest choice with so many options.

From antique to contemporary, glass to brass, and modern polished nickel, lamps come in a huge assortment of designs, shapes, colours, dimensions, and lighting abilities.

Interior designers say home (and o ce) lighting can also a ect a person’s state of mind. Whether you are looking for a little romance, relaxation, fun, or sophistication, the right lamp will add to a room’s ambience, and create a specific mood or feel.

Lamps should be functional, a ordable, and look great in their space, so take your time selecting. Always buy the best, taking both antique and modern options into account. An antique lamp will most likely continue to increase in value, while a modern designer lamp could become a future antique.

Table lamps are great tools to define functional zones within a room, and to accentuate an emotional impact of specific spaces. Think about a reading lamp, a romantic dinner table lamp, or a lamp emitting a soft warm glow for nighttime illumination. Table lamps are also good for creating a calm and cosy atmosphere, or, if desired, bringing formality, class and artistic expression into a room.

Floor and table lamps are easily, and quickly, able to be repositioned, so you can change a room’s vibe with ease.

CHOOSING A LAMP

Choosing the right lamp is a personal business, much the same as buying a piece of art, or a new couch. Start by defining what kind of mood you are trying to achieve.

Look at the scale and purpose of specific rooms in your home. If a room is large and ceilings are high, consider lighting fixtures that are significant in the scale, such as floor lamps.

Pay attention to the height of lamps, and also the diameter their shades.

Lamps featured on this page are from the Ralph Lauren Collection, available at Trenzseater.

a sound investment

Having separate headphones for different occasions can be expensive. Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott finds that one new headset may have solved the problem.

When it comes to investing in a good pair of over-ear headphones, it pays to think about where and when you plan to use them the most. For online work meetings? Music while working or travelling? At the gym? Or a mixture of uses? The perfect headphones for one use, may be the worst for another.

Sony has released the WH-CH720N (an uninspiring name, for sure) that just might hit the sweetspot for a relatively a ordable, multipurpose, yet stylish and comfortable headphone.

The extremely lightweight, yet remarkably sturdy headset has taken me from early morning sweaty gym workouts, to morning Teams meetings, to music and podcasts while I work, and even some casual gaming in the evening,

without skipping a beat or needing to be recharged for a week. You can even connect to two Bluetooth devices at once and switch between them at will.

If the noise cancelling is used sparingly, then an impressive battery life of 35-50 hours can be expected.

The sound is decent for a $199 headphone, and the intelligent dual noise sensor recognises when to ideally filter ambient noise, or let it in, with even finer adjustments using the accompanying app.

The noise cancelling isn’t quite as good as Sony’s high-end units, but enough to drown out o ce chatter and background gym music.

Available in three stylish colours, the WH-CH720N is worth a look if you need headphones that will do a great job where and when you need them to.

• Lightweight but sturdy and reinforced

• Dual noise sensor with intelligent noise cancelling

• Soft synthetic leather earpads for all-day comfort

• 35-50 hours battery life (active feature dependent)

• Available in black, blue and white

showcasing

Acquiring a gorgeous piece of artwork is one thing, and showcasing it is another. Metropol has some suggestions about how to display them to best advantage. Simple changes can equate to big impact.

Selecting the right place for your treasured piece to sit or hang makes a huge di erence to showcasing it. Start with a blank area in your décor, and see how it looks there. No go? Try swapping it for something already in the spot. Remember just because you have it doesn’t mean it all needs to be on display at once. Change the look of any room by rotating the art on display.

Colour cohesion is a styling trick that can be used to ensure art complements and rounds out room interiors. Find hues within your art pieces that can easily be matched and introduced into everyday items in your home. Maintaining your piece as the flagship element, simple pops of colour will tie together the space and solidify its e ect.

In many cases, the artworks collected over time can look better tied together into a gallery wall than randomly displayed throughout a home. A ‘gallery’ is a creative way to fill bare walls. Di erent sizes, shapes, and colours can complement each other to create an abstract and eye-catching e ect. Arrange art on the floor first to visualise what your gallery wall will look like, and reorganise to suit.

Abstraction represents freedom, among other things, and is entirely interpretive in the eye of the beholder. It’s the sweet spot between fantasy and reality.

In your home, it can become just what you need to release the pressures and expectations of everyday life. Insert your personality into each space through abstract art, which can be as small and inconspicuous as a candle or vase. There’s no commitment with simple abstract additions to shift the dynamic of your interior, they’ll fit in happily on their own. Pushing the boundaries in shapes, finishings and textures, abstract art lets loose from the norm.

The energy reflected in each piece has the power to attract new emotions in your home. Be as loud or quiet as you like, from imagination inflicting paintings and furniture to mood representing mini pieces whose peculiar shape encapsulates how you feel after a long day.

The interior design world has welcomed abstract designs in recent years following the rise of art like interpretive plaster frames and pottery. When lockdowns encouraged those of us cooped up at home to get crafty, some incredible artworks and ideas arose. Thus, the interior world shifted and adopted the imperfectness of being human and abstract art flourished.

Luckily, the many home décor boutiques across Christchurch stocked with goodies so you can take the trend home with you. Styling is simple and can be easily implemented into both the minimalist and maximalist aesthetic households. Choose the pieces that speak to you most. The power of each piece lies in how you feel when looking at it, like a love-at-first-sight scenario.

get a garage revamp

Many homes in Canterbury have garages that are prominent features of their property’s street frontage. This means it’s often one of the first things people will notice about a home, and also it can bring down the value if it’s looking a bit dated.

What’s behind your stylish door is important – you want quality components, reliability, and backup service so that you can take advantage of the added value for years to come. When considering installing a new garage door, one of the most important steps is to consult with a reputable garage door dealer or installer who can help you choose the best door for your specific needs and budget.

Owners of Garador Christchurch, Hilary and Aaron, understand the needs of the local community and work closely with their customers, while also taking advantage of the added benefit of having support from one of the largest garage door networks in New Zealand.

“One of the main features from the street of many houses in Christchurch is

the garage – by updating your garage door, it can modernise and refresh your home,” says Hilary. “Not only are new residential garage doors convenient, they also provide extra protection.

Aging garage doors may be easier for thieves to access. A new door built from thick, quality local steel and operated by a secure garage door opener is your best bet for garage protection.”

On top of adding value to your home and enhancing security, one of the best aspects of updating your garage door is the options available to you. You have the freedom to choose from a range of modern colours to suit your property, and you can rest easy with a warranty on any products.

“We stand behind our service and product at Garador Christchurch, and we file the warranties on behalf of our customers as part of our package. We also have a system for the servicing requirements, so we will send you reminders when they’re needed. We’re here to make it as easy as possible for you, and to enable your new garage

door to run e ectively and e ciently for years to come. We can make recommendations and will advise you every step of the way.”

Give yourself peace of mind and let the team at Garador Christchurch sort everything out for you. They pride themselves on delivering quality service and products, including installation of new doors and maintenance of existing systems.

KEEP THEM in or out

A hot topic for debate is what’s best for your feline friends? Keeping them indoors or outdoors?

While there’s obvious drawbacks for each, we’ve provided a full rundown on what keeping, or not, your kitty cooped up can do. Arguments for indoor cats suggest longer life expectancy and reduced risk on

INDOOR:

• Requires kitty litter and you’ll have to negate the smell.

• Builds an a ectionate bond between cat and owner, but can be damaging to the cat’s emotional well-being during prolonged periods of absence.

• Prone to anxiety, obesity, and boredom.

• Safe from outside danger but inside falls can still occur.

wildlife, while outdoor cat owners say there’s nothing better for their feline’s well-being than the excitement and adventure of the outdoors. The ethics behind it provide no simple answer. We suggest keeping a watchful eye on outdoor cats and putting time aside to entertain and exercise indoor cats.

OUTDOOR:

• Provides stimulating elements beneficial to a cat’s mental and physical health.

• Reduces poor behavioural activity.

• Exposed to human inflicted danger such as petnapping or roadside accidents.

• Instinct of defending territory can cause neighbourhood cat combat.

Posters

Creating and distributing flyers is an e ective way to see if anyone in your community has seen them. Include a clear photo of your pet, their name, and your contact information on the flyers. Post them in public places such as local parks, community centres, veterinary clinics, letter boxes, and supermarkets.

Enlist your community

Share the information about your lost pet on social media platforms, Facebook neighbourhood groups, and online pet forums. This can increase the chances of someone spotting and reporting your pet’s whereabouts. Enlist the help of friends, family, and neighbours to form a group that can comb the surrounding areas.

Microchip

Get your pet microchipped before they get lost. New Zealand law requires that dog owners’ microchip and register their dogs by three months of age. Microchipping involves implanting a small chip under the pet’s skin, containing identification details that can be scanned by veterinarians and animal shelters. Ensuring your contact information is up to date with the microchip registry is essential for a successful reunion.

FUN FACT:

A Jack Russell terrier named Gidget made headlines in 2014 for being found near Portland, Oregon, over 4300 kilometres from her Pennsylvania home. Gidget’s reunion with her family was made possible by her microchip, which let shelter workers know she had a home.

Here are some:

Chimonanthus praecox (wintersweet) is well known for its winter fragrance, and the clear yellow bells of Luteus, or the red-marked form, Grandiflorus. Look out for Trenython with creamy, almost white, flowers brightly marked in red and an unusually powerful scent.

Sarcococca (Christmas box) are evergreens with glossy pointed foliage, gorgeous white flowers, and an unmissable scent. Various cultivars range in height from 60cm to 2m.

Lonicera (scented bushy honeysuckles) are well known, and easily grown, although best against a wall in winter. Look out for pink flowering varieties.

Viburnum × bodnantense (winter-flowering viburnum) is popular, especially the Dawn cultivar. For a brighter pink, more fragrant flower try Charles Lamont. Viburnums flower intermittently from early winter into spring.

Hamamelis (witch hazels) come in a variety of cultivar, many brightly coloured, but not all are scented so be careful. Look out for Angelly (pale yellow), Arnold Promise (lemon), Aurora (yellow and red), Imperialis (pale yellow), Jermyn’s Gold (gold), and Vesna (pale orange).

Implementing key strategies will create an eco-friendly living space that reduces energy consumption, minimises waste, and promotes a healthier lifestyle.

Here are some suggestions:

Energy-e cient appliances

Invest in energy-e cient appliances that sport the Energy Star label. These appliances consume less electricity and water, resulting in lower utility bills and reduced environmental impact.

Insulation and weatherproofing

Proper insulation and weatherproofing help maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, and reduce the need for excessive heating or cooling. This saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Renewable energy sources

Consider installing solar panels or wind turbines to generate renewable energy for your home. These systems can significantly reduce or even eliminate your reliance on fossil fuel-based electricity.

Recycling and composting

Set up a recycling system in your home and educate your family members about proper waste disposal. Composting organic waste reduces landfill contributions and produces nutrient-rich soil for gardening.

Sustainable materials

When renovating or furnishing your home, opt for sustainable materials like reclaimed wood, bamboo, or recycled plastic. These materials are eco-friendly and often more durable.

the new standard in SUSTAINABLE BUILDING

Health Based Building developed Foreverbreathe Specification in response to demand for a ordable, high performance, sustainable homes.

Foreverbreathe Specification delivers exceptional air quality and energy e ciency through a sophisticated combination of high-performance materials that work together to naturally reduce indoor humidity while increasing air tightness. Materials used have been carefully selected with consideration to their long-term impact, to ensure positive outcomes for the environment, human health, and social well-being.

Health Based Building has constructed a world first Foreverbreathe Demonstration Home at 1062 Colombo St, Christchurch, to ensure you can experience the exceptional performance Foreverbreathe Specification provides. Monitoring systems are embedded in the home to capture data 24/7. Monitoring involves eight aspects of importance

to confirming Foreverbreathe Specification is delivering an a ordable high performance, healthy sustainable home.

Health Based Building investigations have confirmed more than 500kgs of toxic plastic is involved in the average domestic home, a situation with a flow-on e ect that damages the environment, and further impacts outdoor and indoor air quality. Waste management plans do not recognise the volume of hidden plastic pollution in our homes.

Only the minute percentage of waste is considered and even then, we have no answer to the problem. Foreverbreathe Specification is here to position prevention as the way to remove the homes we live in from contributing to global warming and ongoing environmental impacts.

“We invite you to visit the Foreverbreathe Demonstration Home to know more about Foreverbreathe Specification homes in use, the science and physics involved and who we involve as building professionals.” says co-founder Robin Curtis.

for an AI FUTURE

If you haven’t already been in a discussion where Artificial Intelligence and its consequences were part of the narrative then, I can assure you, it won’t be long before you will be.

Artificial Intelligence or ‘AI’ (or ‘ChatGPT’, in its latest, extraordinarily popular, iteration) put very simply and in layman’s terms involves the simulation of human intelligence processes by computer-based systems.

It’s not a completely new phenomenon, as many of us already utilize technologies that allow for this, such as when we access face recognition on our phones or summon up the ever helpful and obliging Suri for Apple or Alexa for Amazon. But the scope for AI to be used to a much greater level is enormous. You see, it can undertake huge numbers of tasks and processes, including repetitive ones, with the benefit of never experiencing fatigue. It can analyze, categorize and classify millions of data points which, when applied in different circumstances, can solve complex problems, thus making daily lives easier. But with this ability and prescribed benefit there’s also a deeper question. If it can do all these tasks, what does that mean for the people who are currently doing them or parts of them? And that’s a big question being asked in tearooms and boardrooms everywhere.

I recently received a local building products information booklet which had as a headline “Is Artificial Intelligence a threat to your job?” and it quoted a Goldman Sachs report from March of this year that suggested up to 300 million jobs in America and Europe could be affected in the future. This suggests a kind of future none of us would happily envisage.

It didn’t provide a timeline for this to start happening, but even posing the question sends shivers down numerous spines, including my own. The reassuring point the article did make, however, and additional

research supported, was that “critical decision-making, creativity, problemsolving, collaboration and activities that require human judgment and adaptability can’t be duplicated.”

The very things that make humanity unique also remain the most difficult to duplicate despite the power of millions of algorithms doing their thing – and we can be grateful for that. Currently I’m seeing the use of AI in our own industry in written applications, where a quick question to ChatGPT is able to produce smart advertising text, property summaries and reports that look and sound both accurate and polished, a far cry from some of the ones I’ve read over the years. So that’s a positive whilst I wait to see how else we will utilize the varying technologies. A quick Google search suggests the kinds of occupations that have reason for concern in the future and given I have colleagues and friends in such roles I’m choosing not to highlight them. Safer from AI dominance are positions like plumbers, painters, barbers, athletes and anything where creative thinking, good judgement, cultural nuance and the ability to read human social clues is needed.

At the moment I like to think that’s where other real estate professionals and I are currently found, but we now know you can never, ever sit still for too long.

New Zealand’s remotest outpost is now just a video call away with Antarctica New Zealand installing Starlink at Scott Base to improve connectivity.

The aim is to give scientists access to modern digital software tools while they are working at the Ross Island research station, some 3800km from New Zealand. The increased capacity and speed of the connection means the experience should be similar to working from home.

Antarctica New Zealand’s chief scientific advisor Jordy Hendrikx says the Starlink trial is a significant step up in

communications capability for scientists that work from the base, opening up access to data, large files, organisational communication and collaboration tools, as well as Wi-Fi and mobile phones.

“It’ll be a di erent world.

“This could be a new era of real-time collaboration for Scott Base, with new levels of interaction for inter-disciplinary teams and analysts, both in New Zealand and around the world,” Dr Hendrikx says.

Scott Base’s first data connection to the outside world came in 1992 when Telecom NZ, in partnership with then Antarctic division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), completed the installation of a satellite earth station at nearby Arrival Heights. Before that, it was high frequency radio and letters. Until now, movies were watched on DVDs.

This international firm has 130 years of history, including designing our iconic Art Gallery, but this is the first residential project for Christchurch. “I am thrilled to bring residential architectural design on this scale to Woolston,” says Tao, “I was prepared to invest heavily in design, often to the amazement of my peers.”

The 14 townhouses, 11 of which are already snapped up by lucky buyers, utilise top quality materials and are high spec. The stylish front

The team’s next project is located at 265 Colombo Street. These stunning townhouses are also designed by Buchan Group. “They will be available in September this year, and they are for anyone who loves fabulous design, but has a little less to spend.”

Food, fibre & agritech

Great ideas are growing on the Canterbury plains, in the Food, Fibre and Agritech sector, that have the potential to solve big problems in Aotearoa and across the globe.

This sector is one of the ChristchurchNZ’s focus clusters, identified as driving growth and future innovation.

As the largest agricultural region in New Zealand, Canterbury is a consistent high-performer, producing one-fifth of the nation’s agricultural GDP and employing nearly 20,000 people.

Competitive advantages of temperate climate, fertile soils and water access are strengthened by a logistical hub of world-class manufacturers, technology and professional services. From an educational factor, Lincoln University has one of the largest concentrations of land-based researchers in the Southern Hemisphere, and Canterbury University produces outstanding engineering talent. Together

this sector is growing big thinkers chasing global opportunities.

High-growth industries producing talented innovators are worth investing in. ChristchurchNZ does this is through the Food, Fibre and Agritech challenge where finalists go through a pre-accelerator to develop their idea into a viable product. This programme is delivered by the University of Canterbury’s Centre for Entrepreneurship.

The top 10 ventures were pitched to a live audience on 19 June, and the innovations on display were remarkable, all with the potential to disrupt the sector. With the ongoing impacts of climate change, the call for increasingly smart agritech solutions is now becoming more important than ever before.

Exciting opportunities

It’s been fantastic over the past few months to see international business events returning to our city, and to host several of them at Te Pae Christchurch.

International events are key to driving economic value to our city.

There is a finite number of domestic events available to host and with Tākina in Wellington now open and NZICC in Auckland coming in 2025, it is international events that will see our business and also our city impact grow.

The return of international events has also seen a return to increased sales activity overseas.

We are fortunate in Ōtautahi to have a ‘team Christchurch’ mentality, with a number of businesses and organisations working together to support our city and objectives. It’s one of the things that makes our city special.

For us, this partnership approach was evident during a recent event in London, where we joined with ChristchurchNZ and the Christchurch Foundation to showcase Christchurch to an array of guests who share our commitment to supporting and growing opportunities for our region and its residents.

We will continue to look for these occasions to partner and promote, with the aim of securing conferences and events that will support our city’s ambitions, because we have a desire to increase awareness of Christchurch internationally and showcase our city as a new and exciting world destination.

Business update

Every three months we run the Quarterly Canterbury Business Survey, which gathers insights from the wider business community.

The survey looks at their confidence in the economy, their own performance, and their expectations looking forward for things like investment in plant and equipment, and bringing on more sta . We also ask what barriers they face which are getting in the way of doing those things.

Results during the last year have broadly showed that businesses in Canterbury are optimistic about their own earnings, but remain concerned about the direction of the economy in general. This concern is generally born from barriers to growth and productivity, such as labour market constraints and immigration settings, inflationary pressure and rising interest rates, and falling consumer demand.

What has changed recently is the growing concern about rising costs. Where labour

market constraints had previously been the biggest concern, struggling to find sta post-Covid-19, they are now increasingly concerned about the growing increase in costs, which seem to pile on from all directions.

The concern about inflation and rising interest rates may seem obvious as they are the same costs you are facing at home, but when we combine those costs with what businesses tell us is a barrage of additional costs, including compliance burden, the result is businesses are less confident.

What’s the solution?

Just like households, for businesses to be confident and invest they need to operate in an environment where costs can be managed and predicted, and where there aren’t additional or counterproductive costs being added to the mix.

Art in all forms

Our brilliant local talent is being showcased at every level and the city’s events calendar is particularly full next month. We’ve got KidsFest back for another year for the family, the everpopular Winter Fireworks Spectacular down at the New Brighton Pier, Tīrama Mai in town to celebrate Puaka-Matariki Māori New Year and our Go Live! music festival at the Christchurch Town Hall. Or if events aren’t your thing, why not head down to a late night at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna Waiwhetū on a Wednesday, or a show at The Court Theatre or simply take a wander through town to have

a look at some of our vibrant street art.

I really encourage everyone to get out and about this winter, and check out what’s going on.

These are great opportunities to hear about our heritage, as well as spend time with your family enjoying local music, visual art, and installations. Also importantly it’s a chance to support local business during the tough months – there’s nothing better than heading out, stopping for a bite to eat, and checking out some of the shops on the way to a cultural or other event.

For all things art in Christchurch, make sure that you also check out the Toi Ōtautahi website.

CREATIVE joinery

White,

black, wood, and glam were to the fore in winning entries in the Blum Canterbury Master Joiner Awards.

Kitchen islands and breakfast bars dominated the home kitchen entries, with popular materials used including engineered stone, and porcelain, plus a variety of wood such as American white oak, spotted gum, honey ash, and Australia blackbutt timber. Black, white and brown hued islands were accented with the warmth of light and dark wood, and stainless steel, brass, copper and black fittings.

Lighting trends include stylish glass and metal pendants, along with subtle under bench, and shelf LEDS.

Colour popped up in a few (mainly commercial) entries, but not many. Most kitchens feature black and white, or brown and cream, and plenty of space.

EXCITING TRENDS

SPACIOUS MULTI-PURPOSE ROOMS - the open plan kitchen is still popular, and design reflects that with breakfast bars, large islands, and butler’s pantries to extend their reach. Some kitchens also encompass spaces such as a handy guest bathroom, and dining areas. Connectivity and continuous visibility are also influencing how home owners want their kitchens to look and function.

LARGE WINDOWS - a focal point for many kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and living areas. In some designs window walls separate area for functional purposes, and to let nature and the sun shine through. Window and wooden slatted features slide into wall pockets, and low-emission window (and doors) are part of current kitchen trends.

DUPLICATION - More use of kitchens as the heart of the home has resulted in doubling up on fixtures, and, in some instances, on appliance too. Sinks, ovens, and dishwashers are common double-ups, and sometimes duplicate islands

DARK VS LIGHT - rich dark wood cabinetry is being o set with lighter bench tops, especially quartz and composites, such as sintered stone, that are non-porous, stain resistant, and easy to maintain.

TRADITIONAL STYLE - are being introduced by way of pendant lighting, and classic beaded inset cabinets.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS - are a top priority in many kitchen (and bathroom designs) to hide clutter. Solutions include walk-in and pull-out pantries, and integrated panels to hide appliances.

kitchens CHAMPION

High spec, and elegant kitchens are where Sydenham Joinery excels in design, production, and installation. This is evident in two recent wins in the 2023 Canterbury Master Joiners Joinery and Design Awards, and National Master Joiners Awards.

In the Canterbury competition, this beauty won the Best Kitchen $50,000 and above, and the Best Kitchen Design award. In the National race for joinery supremacy, the kitchen also won the prize for Best Kitchen Design.

“Our clients’ intentions were to renovate and sell their home, but they love the refurbishment so much they have decided to stay,” says Sydenham Joinery Company Director Grant Weston.

Lighting is a central part of the design. Warm light washes from above and below the large wall of cabinetry, as the island light shines out from the very inside edge of the stone bench. “The client has since talked about how they enjoy an evening view of the city, the house lit only by the kitchen and fireplace lighting, a testament to how exceptional design can blend seamlessly with practicality.”

The main back wall of the kitchen stretches seven plus metres, constructed with sleek-looking Prime Black Matte Soft Touch. A subtle feature of the wall is American White Oak Veneer, framing the darker cabinetry.

Proving that with an excellent design and production team, a kitchen can be both cost e ective and a leader in its field, this design won the Canterbury and the national 2023 Master Joinery Award for Best Kitchen Under $30,000.

“After years of have a white-on-white kitchen that had become a little tired, our clients requested an inviting, warm area as a hub for their home,” says Sydenham Joinery Company Director Grant Weston.

“We created a beautiful, bespoke kitchen island as a gathering point.”

Stunning lighting washes down the grain-matched island back panel. The warmth and depth of the timber melamine is highlighted as it contrasts beautifully with the 20mm Pure White Caesarstone benchtops.

This is turn highlights the beautiful Prime Black Matte Soft Touch negative

details, and the stopped sharknose handles, which together emphasise the warmer aesthetic while providing a sleek functionality.

The angled kitchen back panel uses Bestwood’s Classic Walnut Timberland board. “With multiple di erent angles and mitres, it wasn’t the simplest construction. Our design intent was to elevate the look and use of what could have just been a simple stone overhang with waterfall ends,” says Grant.

The bar cabinet, shown left on the photo above, has a fresh new look that ties in with the kitchen. The lighting on the floating shelves matches the kitchen, and reflects into the Black Stopsal mirror, making it a true feature.

“The owners are thrilled with their new kitchen, from the project management to the design, down to the tidiness of our workers in their home.”

DJ Hewitt Builders

Daryl Hewitt of DJ Hewitt Builders is equally proud of the awards.

“We have been working together with Sydenham Joinery for more than five years, and these awards are well deserved,” he says.

“We all work together as a team involving a multiple of subtrades along with good project management. This is essential when designing and building kitchens.

“Within our team, Tara Hewitt consults with our clients and meets with them to discuss their choice of product selections, from tapware, appliances and colour palette. This is an essential process in the clients obtaining their dream kitchen. Congratulations to Sydenham Joinery on their prestigious awards, and to everyone involved in the winning projects.”

Award in the Canterbury Master Joinery 2023 CJMA EXCELLENCE AWARDS

This year’s winner features bespoke joinery such as a bar with feature curved panelling, a corian backlit ceiling, illuminated walls/display cases, a wine room, custom bedroom furniture and a Volkswagen Combi Van converted into a DJ booth. Working closely with the client and associates to ensure every detail was achieved and pushing the boundaries of design to create these show stopping spaces.

A sister company of MWF ‘My Little Pub’ was born at a time when socialising outside of your bubble was prohibited, so Gary (MWF owner) saw a need and decided to bring the pub to your back yard. From that point ‘My Little Pub’ has taken off with sales nationally, and now becoming international.

Entertaining is something us Kiwis enjoy so why not bring the pub to your back yard, from Little Irish to Little English these pubs are custom made to reflect an authenticity of whatever you want.

A great level of detailing and craftmanship goes into fittng out the Little Pubs, it is also important to capture the atmosphere that the client is wanting, our aim is that the space allows the owner to reminisce and be transported into a place where ‘good times’ can be had and remembered.

With all this combined it is no surprise that ‘My Little Pub’ won the Supreme Award in the Canterbury Master Joinery 2022 CJMA EXCELLENCE AWARDS

IMPRESSIVE winning joinery

True bespoke joinery requires talent to execute detailing and interesting twists in design.

AChristchurch new build commissioned the team at Murray Hewitt Joinery to incorporate the beauty of curves, grandeur of wood, and strength of Neolith sintered stone throughout.

The dazzling result achieved bronze in this year’s regional Master Joiner Awards, for Best Kitchen over $50k.

Kitchen fronts were clad in American White oak, polished to the client’s requirement of a stylish black stain, which integrated the fridge, dishwasher, and wine cooler.

The bench top and oven ran through to the window, and the induction hob was set flush, rebated into the Monolith bench top. “We cut all the drawers back to a 45-degree angle for a negative detail. Handle-less and soft-closing, the results were seamless,” says Murray.

“A black basin was under-mounted into the Neolith-clad island, which was mitred to appear as one big block, with a solid-timber cantilevered bench top, to look like it’s floating.”

A scullery backs onto an impressive, curved wall in black American Oak vertical slats, which flows on through to the o ce, while all internal doors are seamless in full ceiling height. The laundry, lounge unit, walk-in robe, powder room, and Neolith bathroom vanities also recieved the same tailored treatment.

THE POWER OF WOMEN

An increase in gender diversity can only be a positive thing for traditionally male-dominated industries. It brings di erent perspectives to a workplace, can change outdated cultures for the better, and apparently, even increase productivity.

Bri Scott (pictured) is a shining example of what a woman can achieve in a trade. Not long after she completed her electrical apprenticeship she set up her own company – PowerOn. Now, managing both permanent sta and contractors, she is finding that being a woman electrician really resonates with many customers.

“They say that my team and I actually listen, and want to find ways to give them what they are asking for, even if that involves a bit of problem solving,” says Bri. “I find that the most satisfying aspect of my work.”

PowerOn covers the full range of customers’ electrical needs. “We specialise in new build and renovation wiring, alterations, including spa and electric vehicle chargers, as well as in heat pump installation and CCTV and security alarm systems. We also carry out electrical safety inspections and circuit upgrades and advise on energy-e cient lighting solutions. Recently we have branched into the installation of solar systems. It’s really exciting being at the forefront of the developing technology in our industry.”

Oakridge Homes is one of the newest building companies in town, yet it has already completed more than 100 homes, with100 more under construction, with many more signed up and going through the consenting process, plus two new show homes to visit.

While still a relatively young company, age is no indication of experience for the team at Oakridge. Between them, they have decades of experience in all facets of the building industry, putting their talents to good use delivering a vast variety of turnkey properties.

Director James Parker says the company has enjoyed a very busy start, having already completed more than 100 homes, and has a good pipeline for the coming year. “We don’t just do one house at a time,” he explains. “We build in large blocks from 10-50 homes at time, which enables us to achieve good economies of scale which can then be passed on to potential purchasers, meaning less waiting time for enthusiastic home buyers to achieve their dreams.”

A unique selling point for Oakridge Homes is that its contracts are all inclusive. “There are absolutely no hidden costs,” says James. “All our contracts include a fixed price, turnkey financing, landscaping, and window coverings, making it super easy to move in.”

WHY OAKRIDGE?

“We know that customers want certainty when buying a new home, we have a proven track record in delivery and run a tight ship ensuring homes are completed in the time indicated, with communication throughout and detailed quality assurance processes at the end of the build,” says James. “With our all-inclusive price, you can be certain that whether you’re buying your first home or building your portfolio, what you see is what you get.

“With decades of experience, our team comprises the best tradespeople in the industry,” he adds. “Additionally, as Master Builders, all our homes come complete with a 10-year guarantee.”
