FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL NATALIE CIRIGLIANO BROSNAN ‘02, ED.D. It is with immense joy and gratitude that I write my first Oaks letter as Mercy’s Head of School. One thing that I have found to be very unique through my experiences at Mercy as a student, a teacher, an Assistant Principal, and now the Head of School, is that Mercy is simultaneously the same school, yet an entirely new one no matter when you visit. Mercy will always be Mercy in that it is deeply rooted in the mission, and you can feel it alive and well when you step onto our campus and interact with our students and faculty. To me, Mercy’s mission is a truly lived experience. Centered on empathy and caring for others, it is something you feel deeply and carry with you for life. Yet Mercy is always a different school too. In order to keep up with the times we have to evolve and change, and every generation brings new student needs and new challenges. As a result, the school is constantly bringing in new programs and course offerings. It is very exciting to be part of the rethinking process of what the students of today need from Mercy in terms of education, extracurricular, and social-emotional programs. I very much look forward to connecting with everyone in our community, receiving feedback, and leading Mercy in our great new chapter!

It is with great pleasure that we introduce Natalie Cirigliano Brosnan ‘02, Ed.D., as Mercy’s Head of School. She is an alumna and our former Assistant Principal for Student Life. Born and raised in Burlingame, she graduated from St. Catherine of Siena before attending Mercy and becoming a student athlete and the Valedictorian of her class. Natalie graduated from UCLA with a degree in Psychobiology, and holds an Ed.D and Master of Arts in Catholic Educational Leadership and a minor in Educational Technology from the University of San Francisco. After leaving her role in Mercy Administration in 2015, she became the Principal of Holy Name School in San Francisco. She served on the Board of Trustees for Mercy San Francisco and assisted Sr. Carolyn Krohn through the summer of 2018 in the midst of their leadership transition. We sat down to talk about her Homecoming: You are a proud Mercy Alumna! What are some of your strongest memories from your time here as a student?

The values of the Sisters of Mercy permeate our campus and culture. What aspects of their mission do you connect with most?

I have so many amazing memories as a student at Mercy. My academic and extracurricular experiences were equally important to me. I found that no matter what activity I was part of, I was always mentored by my coaches and teachers, and every one of them showed me glimpses of Mercy that defined my education and my love for the school. The best gift my parents could have ever given me was my gift of a Mercy education. I am a firm believer that I am who I am because of this school. My parents gave me my roots and Mercy gave me my wings and for that I will forever be thankful.

The Mission is the most important piece of our education, because it is what makes Mercy, Mercy. In the simplest terms, the Mercy Mission invites us all to be the best versions of ourselves by giving to others and bringing compassion and empathy into our daily thoughts and interactions. Our foundress Catherine McAuley wanted to make a difference in any way she could, and I think that is a wonderful example to our students. The Campus Ministry Team does such a phenomenal job of offering students opportunities to get involved in a number of faith formation and service learning activities that bring the Works of Mercy alive.

The past few years have been quite a whirlwind for you! What experiences leading Holy Name (as Principal) and Mercy SF (as Chair of the Board) helped hone your skills to prepare you to take the helm at Mercy Burlingame? I think the most important lesson I have learned about leadership is that every day is about triage and prioritizing all decisions. My decisions are always based on the school’s mission and student safety, and I believe it is critically important to never lose sight of the core principles and values of the mission. The breadth of my experiences have given me a deep understanding of fiscal responsibility and how to make tough financial decisions that are best for the community. I have already relied on my experience at Holy Name of leading a three-year retrofit and remodeling project. As we begin to plan for our Athletic and Student Life Center, I know that my previous work will play a tremendous role in my ability to lead this project forward. 4 MERCY HIGH SCHOOL BURLINGAME

What do you want your legacy to be? Something that is very important to me is that everyone in the community, whether or not they are already familiar with our school, experiences Mercy’s mission through their interactions with me. I will work not only to preserve Mercy’s mission and rich culture, but actively encourage our branding, admissions, and fundraising to grow even more. I am a hard worker who is not afraid of a challenge, so I look forward to leading administrative, academic, and fundraising initiatives that help us further develop innovative programs and update the school’s buildings and infrastructure. Of course it would be a wonderful gift, especially as an alum, to open the doors to our Athletic and Student Life Center and this is at the forefront of our goals. What an opportunity - to have a space for the entire school to gather, a ‘home-gym advantage’ for our volleyball and basketball teams, and a facility to host our community!

Mercy Faculty are Leaders in Education At Mercy, we are proud that our students are not the only ones that exhibit a love of learning. With the support of administration, Mercy faculty and staff challenge themselves to be at the forefront of their field - experimenting with cutting edge trends and techniques, and utilizing best practices for learning and engagement. Assistant Head of School for Academics Lauren Conklin facilitates internal peer learning with regular professional development days and programs like peer-to-peer observation. Instructional Coach Jim Puccetti guides faculty in technology and innovative lesson planning. Our culture of thought leadership is not limited to campus though. Mercy Faculty are often asked to speak at national conferences on important topics in their field. This summer a number of faculty and staff presented across the country.

Lauren Conklin & Jim Puccetti

Lauren Conklin led two sessions at the National Coalition of Girls Schools (NCGS) Annual Conference; a hands-on workshop called “Inspiration Stations: Learn, Dream, Create!”, and a panel presentation titled “Build a Culture of Innovation by Transforming Professional Development”. She discussed strategies and models that have yielded positive results at Mercy, promoting a culture of faculty collaboration, risk taking, and innovative approaches to learning and teaching. Teachers Ryan Offield (English), Stefanie Oudiz (English), and Lindsay Stewart (Science) presented at the annual Catholic Communication and Collaboration Conference in Los Angeles, CA. They shared techniques on how they engage students, facilitate collaboration, and effectively gather and use student feedback.

Jamila Sinlao Zanette ‘04, Mercy’s Alumnae Relations Manager, spoke as a guest panelist in Nashville, TN at Blackbaud’s annual conference - a software program widely used by educational institutions, nonprofits, and foundations to harness community engagement and impact. She discussed Mercy’s focus on alumnae engagement, and how she has implemented Mercy Connect to bring value to our alumnae - past, present, and future.

Mercy Welcomes new Director of Admissions Christina McMorrow comes to Mercy with a background in admissions, marketing, counseling and administration. She was previously the Director of Admissions at Compass High School and the Director of Student and Staff Development at Stanbridge Academy. Chris holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Santa Clara University and a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of San Francisco. A member of the Burlingame community and OLA Parish, she has family ties to Mercy Burlingame through her cousins and aunt. Chris is excited to highlight the benefits of an all-girls education and to support Mercy’s mission and legacy. Q: What drew you to the Mercy Community? A: Living in the Burlingame area for the past 8 years, I knew of Mercy and it’s beautiful campus. In speaking with my cousins, I heard how instrumental Mercy was in helping them to develop the confidence and kindness they lead with today. It had always seemed like the kind of community I would love to be part of, and based on my first few months on the job, I was right! Q: You are the main Mercy representative interacting with middle school girls! What do you like about working with this age group? A: Middle school girls are an incredible group of students to work with. I appreciate that this is a foundational time in a young woman’s life, as some of the decisions made can have a significant impact on a student’s future. But middle school is also a time for fun and friendship! I am inspired by the energy and spirit in this age group, and always hope to leave any student

I work with feeling that I understand and appreciate them for exactly who they are in this small window of time. Q: What do you remember about your transition from 8th grade to high school? A: I remember feeling a bit scared and awkward at first. (I had wild hair and flat irons had not been invented yet!) However, I remember finding classes much more interesting and challenging, and I was excited to attend games and afterschool activities. As I describe Mercy’s incredible program to middle school students, I can appreciate how daunting the process is, but am also a bit envious of the transformative experience I know Mercy can offer them! While students may not face the same challenges I did, my hope is that they will look back on their transition into freshman year with a similar fondness and appreciation for the start of an incredible journey. The ARC Program Mercy works to understand anxiety, build resilience, and achieve balance in our community

Mercy’s grounding in the Catholic faith has infused the school with an acute awareness of the dignity of every person. Our cultural value of appreciating the unique essence and gifts of each student compels us to evolve in our understanding of their joys and challenges. So, as we face growing concern over worrying national statistics as well as our own observations about teen mental health, Mercy has launched a school-wide initiative called the ARC Program. Last year, Mercy Leadership began to have more serious discussions about student anxiety. Teachers noticed more students talking about having anxiety and selfreported panic attacks. At the same time, they saw students wanting to be “perfect” academically, feeling that they had to get an A on every assignment. As a school that values and emphasizes the learning process as well as the outcome, faculty were concerned that students were less motivated to learn, with more of a desire to just figure out how to get an A. At that time, Campus Minister and Religion Department Chair Angie Simonetti put out a call to any faculty interested in reading a newly published book: “Enough as She Is” by Rachel Simmons, about the complex factors contributing to mental health issues in adolescent girls. Discussions at that book club eventually led to more formal and strategic meetings with Mercy Leadership about ways to support our students, and the ARC Committee was born.

“ARC is a metaphor. It encompasses the idea that our students are on an arc in their lives, and that we accompany them much like Noah shepherded those on the Ark. We are all in this together; sailing, guiding and supporting the girls toward their goals. It is both the image of an arc and the community that was formed on the Ark.” —Sandy Flaherty, Director of Mission and Catholic Identity

The ARC Committee began by collecting input and observations, and looking at student needs. It is simultaneously a think tank, reflection and action group. They discuss what qualitative and quantitative information would be helpful to inform school decisions - student and parent surveys, for example - and act to gather the insights needed. They have included the faculty in several discussions, and will continue to broaden the scope of research and exploration. An important goal of the ARC Program is to help students understand and reframe anxiety in order to teach them recognition and coping skills. A good place to start is a discussion around “healthy stress,’’ says Lauren Conklin, Assistant Head of School for Academics. “We, as teachers and parents, have the power to help our students learn to deal with distress about typical experiences, like tests, by normalizing those feelings and responding to them appropriately.” Teaching students to develop healthy coping strategies to deal with anxiety around daily experiences empowers them, instilling confidence and a strong, reflective sense of self. Resilience is at the heart of this goal. As defining traits of the Sisters of Mercy, the qualities of resilience and courage go all the way back to our foundress Catherine McAuley. Recent research is indicating that girls are not building resilience because they refuse to fail, and instead choose things that they are confident they will be successful in. This lessens creativity, innovation, and responsibility. “To build resilience, we need to create an environment where students can fail but aren’t crushed by failure,” says

Angie. “We have to maintain safe spaces and opportunities for students to fail and pick themselves back up again. This idea is something we continue to work on through the ARC Committee and in our academics.” The ARC Program is an ongoing process and dialogue between faculty, students, and parents. Mercy is looking forward to listening, discussing, and evolving as we develop ways to support our Mercy Girls - past, present, and future. There is no roadmap, but in the true spirit of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy, we will blaze a path with love, compassion, and courage.

“Building resilience comes with learning to deal with failures and disappointments. A courageous person goes out and takes action she believes in, even if she might fail.” —Angie Simonetti, Campus Minister, Religion Department Chair

“We’re all passionate about supporting girls and coming at it from different angles.

It’s exciting to collaborate and create a bigger picture of an atmosphere where students face fewer impediments to learning. If kids are calmer, they learn better!”

—Joy Phillips, Wellness Counselor

ARC in Action To address the challenges our girls face, ARC has encouraged a holistic approach to better support students. While taking a proactive approach to mental health looks different in each department, ARC unites the school’s efforts and keeps the broad, strategic goals in mind.

In exploring what “mindfulness” might look like in our Catholic School, space was created for meditation that would fit our culture. Angie Simonetti provides the guidance for the Mercy Effect – a meditation the school does every Friday morning. ARC facilitated faculty meetings looking at best practices involving homework. Each department developed a review of their unique requirements and expectations, exploring how adjustments in assigning homework could improve the effectiveness of student learning. Faculty members held discussions about the seniors’ summer reading book, “Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be”, by Frank Bruni. In an effort to humanize the college admissions process, the counselors aim for students to look for the best fit for them in terms of programs and environment. Evidence has shown that students’ constant access to grades heightens anxiety. ARC members worked with our registrar to turn off pop-up notifications of graded assignments, so that students can focus on their learning in class.

What can we do? Perhaps one of the most bewildering questions that this issue raises is, “What can we do?” Teenagers are all unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all program, action, or fix for anxiety. But there are some things to consider that can make a difference for young people:

• Keep the BIG goals in mind: health, happiness, and a meaningful, fulfilling life.

• Help to facilitate positive connections with their peers, family, and the larger community, as connecting through activities can combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.

• Put discussions about grades in the context of their learning and educational career.

• Spend time listening to what is important to your student and enjoy positive time together doing something fun or enjoyable.

• Help them get enough rest - students are able to

learn more effectively and better process emotions when they are well rested.

ARC is working with the Counseling and Religion Departments to develop a 4-year curriculum that weaves meaningful discussion of mental health into a Mercy education. Topics will include finding peace through calming exercises, learning about healthy relationships, and responsible use of technology. THE OAKS WINTER 2019 7

Foundation for Success STUDY SKILLS CLASS

Mercy is proud to challenge students with innovative classes and learning methods. Last year we introduced a semester-long Study Skills course for current freshmen, designed to bridge the gap between middle school and high school demands. English Teacher Stefanie Oudiz developed a curriculum with exercises and projects that increase students’ awareness of their unique learning styles, which helps them manage academic activities independently and take on challenges with confidence and curiosity.

Enhanced Learning through Technology In last fall’s Oaks, you read about how Mercy has invested in professional development, specifically around the productive use of technology. With a proliferation of programs, apps, and software, teachers are expanding their toolkits while honing the effectiveness of the technology used in their classrooms to augment student learning. Two examples of programs used in different departments are Google’s Tour Creator and Padlet.

Tour Creator

Padlet

The Religion Department used Tour Creator for a Sacred Spaces project, in which students used the program to virtually visit places around the world such as Vatican City. They were asked to create a tour, reflecting on what it felt like to ‘be there’ and why they felt that it was sacred. Similarly in the World Language Department, Spanish students took ‘field trips’ to Spanish-speaking countries! Social Studies uses Padlet in a number of ways, including organizing research sources. In Government class, students create digital note cards that they format into an outline, which they can then share and collaborate on with others. Science students used it in Biology class to help visualize and understand processes such as photosynthesis and cellular respiration through scientific models that they created.

Student Innovation and Technology Team

The goal in creating Mercy’s new Student Innovation and Technology Team was for students to take a leading role in facilitating innovation on campus, serving as student representatives in Mercy’s ongoing conversations about technology. From developing classroom aids such as graphics and posters to hands-on technology trainings and app suggestions, the Student Team assists with anything that relates to technology! The Team’s faculty mentors Lindsay Stewart and Lauren Conklin hope that participating empowers the girls to pursue technology and STEM in their studies and as a profession. The Student Team led a digital learning session for Freshman Orientation teaching digital citizenship and techology tricks. They raised awareness during Digital Citizenship Week, educating our community about unhealthy social media behaviors and issues facing teens at school and at home. Mercy’s Student team encouraged everyone to participate in ‘digital detox’ days.

Dr. Pat Bradley and Mr. Yu-Loung Chang will serve as our co-STEM Coordinators, helping to further bridge our science and math departments while developing a STEM Program unique to Mercy. A new STEM Alumnae Advisory Board has convened with the goal of better understanding what skills are necessary to be successful in college and the STEM fields, so we can add to the courses and content that exist today.”

Raft Race!

After Advanced Placement classes take their AP exams, there is always a bit of downtime before finals and the end of the school year. Last spring, AP Physics and AP Calculus BC decided to have some fun, applying math and physics concepts in a race across the pool! Each class built a raft using only recycled plastic bottles, duct tape, and string. The Physics Team's 'Shrimp Boat' won the race, but of course the real winners were all of our STEM students! MISSION

Living the Mission through STUDENTS TOUR MERCY CENTER In celebration of National Catholic Sisters Week in March, the Sisters of Mercy opened their Convent doors to Mercy Religion classes for a guided tour. Sr. Judy Carle, Sr. Judy Cannon, Sr. Bernie, Sr. Jean, Sr. Ellen and Sr. Joan Marie took the girls through the chapel, convent, and even an unoccupied bedroom for a glimpse into the physical and spiritual lives of the Sisters. The experience was meant to help students understand what being a Sister of Mercy was all about and how they answer the call to serve. Sr. Ellen pointed out meaningful spaces, Icons, and art, telling the students that, "We surround ourselves with beauty because it opens our hearts and minds to God, ourselves and one another."

LA YOUTH DAY Annually, Mercy students and Campus Ministry participate in LA Youth Day. The 2019 Religious Education Congress was planned by young people, for young people, and our students joined more than 12,000 other teens to experience speakers, music, liturgy, and prayer. They attended two workshops one held by Roy Petitfils, a Catholic author, speaker, and psychotherapist on the topic of stress and adolescence. In the second, Doug Tooke, a leader in youth ministry training, spoke about living an authentic life in Christ, and encouraged Mercy students to participate enthusiastically in their faith. The group also celebrated mass in the Anaheim Arena with Archbishop Gomez. 14 MERCY HIGH SCHOOL BURLINGAME

MISSION

Campus Ministry INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY A Critical Concern of the Sisters of Mercy, the topic of Women naturally permeates our academic, spiritual, and campus life discussions. Every day we celebrate the accomplishments of women and girls, but on International Women’s Day (March 8), Mercy took time to reflect on the women who have influenced us personally. From mothers and grandmothers to artists, athletes, and of course Catherine McAuley, students expressed gratitude and appreciation for the great women who inspire them. “I admire my mom because she is strong and independent.” —Rinske Bolander ‘22

“My favorite female athlete is Kerri Walsh Jennings, an Olympic Beach Volleyball player that I admire because of her drive and her passion for the sport.” —Alister Borabo ‘19

“My favorite photographer is Diane Arbus because she is inspirational in her work and took captivating photos of people who are often unnoticed.” —Emily Agler ‘22

“A woman who inspires me is Serena Williams because of her drive and passion to do what she thinks is right” —CK Loeffler Malatesta ‘21

“There are a lot of women who inspire me but especially my grandma - she has always been special to me and always motivated me to work harder.” —Evelyn Walter ‘21

CAMPUS SERVICE PROJECT

Over the summer, students helped Science Teacher Jennifer Lambdin construct a milkweed garden box to benefit monarch butterflies. The monarch butterfly population is in steep decline, and in following with the Sisters of Mercy’s Critical Concern of Earth, the patches of milkweed will provide them with food during their annual migrations.

Scholarship Benefit Dinner

You made the difference! What a spectacular night!

More than 400 guests - a record number - filled the ballroom to honor Sister Suzanne Toolan, RSM and support our Mercy students who receive financial assistance. Sister Suzanne received the Catherine McAuley Award in recognition of her commitment to the vision of Catherine McAuley, the Sisters of Mercy, and the education of young women. Sister was truly humbled when a representative from Congresswoman Jackie Speier’s ‘68 office presented her with a Congressional Proclamation recognizing all of her accomplishments. We also surprised retiring Head of School Karen Hanrahan with the Catherine McAuley award for her years of service to Mercy and our students. Our guests were inspired by our Making A Difference video which shared the story of several amazing seniors. With the increased cost of a Catholic education, 36% of our families now receive financial assistance ranging from $2,500 - $16,000. Margaret “Maggie” Dugoni ’19, now a freshman at Villanova University studying Chemical Engineering, gave a heartfelt speech, along with her personal “thank you” to everyone who helped her attain her dream of being a Mercy Girl! Special thanks to the Making A Difference Honorary Committee and to the San Francisco Marriott Waterfront for their partnership and generosity. Thank you! These two simple words can’t begin to convey the depth of the impact your investment makes on the lives of our current and future Mercy girls. Dreams come true because of you. Together we raised over $325,000!

To sum it all up in one sentence, I chose Mercy because of the small community. I liked the idea of having a supportive and nurturing environment for my time in high school. At Mercy I found a place with an unbelievable amount of space for me to grow. Mercy offered me the space to develop the Innovator’s Club, a combination of the Robotics Club, Engineering Club, and Girls Who Code. I was supported by numerous teachers and faculty members who invested their time and enabled me to explore new areas of the STEM fields. The generous donations from everyone here tonight, and everyone throughout Mercy High School’s existence has enabled thousands of girls just like me to become well educated women who will have better access to jobs and be prepared to take initiative in the future. So from myself, and the many Crusaders before me, and the many who will follow, thank you! —Margaret “Maggie” Dugoni ‘19

VISUAL AND PERFORMING Dedicated to developing the creative side of students, Mercy’s Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Department offers a variety of opportunities for students to grow. They are challenged to explore different genres and topics, and encouraged to weave personal interests into project themes. This spring, our dancers, artists, singers, and actors put their talent on full display and shared their passions with the Mercy Community.

MERCY SPRING DANCE CONCERT The Spring Dance Concert was a poignant celebration of expression. Based on the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy, the themes chosen by students included some of the difficult issues we face as a society each day. With student choreography and special solos, the program dared us to pay attention. It was a truly incredible evening!

MERCY ARTSFEST In Mercy’s annual spring art show, students in ceramics, studio art, and photography showcase their creativity and skill. All class levels displayed their diverse projects and even exhibited collaborations with other academic disciplines such as science and religious studies.

MERCY SPRING CHORALE CONCERT The Spring Chorale Concert was an expressive medley, with songs of heartache and yearning, to songs of hope and inspiration. Mercy Chorale, Tri-M Musicians, and Tri-School Chorus created a beautiful evening in the Mercy Chapel for all who attended.

TRI-SCHOOL PRODUCTIONS SPRING MUSICAL Party like it's 1985! With big hair, popped collars, and a lot of glam, Tri-School Productions took rock to a new level in the Spring Musical production of “The Wedding Singer.” The cast and crew, which included many Mercy Girls, brought Adam Sandler’s classic throwback movie to the stage with an energy that delighted audiences of all ages.

“This particular show is just so fun. Our Director has said that the world needs more joy, and that’s exactly what this production is. I hope that people come away feeling joyful, having had a really great experience.” —Klara La Guardia '20 in the role of Julia.

018-2019

Winter/Spring ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS • GYMNASTICS - We had eight girls on the roster last season, the largest number that we have seen in over five years. At the league finals we had students finish 2nd and 3rd overall. The girls are very enthusiastic and determined about gymnastics, they are even recruiting classmates to come out for gymnastics this year!

• LACROSSE - Making great strides last year, the team improved their overall wins from the previous three years and also finished higher in league standings. They once again qualified for league playoffs but lost a heart-breaker by one point to the #2 seed. We are so proud of the total team effort, as they showed us what they are capable of doing. With 11 seniors who graduated, the coaches are confident that the underclasswomen will step up to fill the void to deliver a great season this year.

• SOCCER - Our soccer program saw some great growth last year with 37 girls in the program, allowing us to form a JV team for the first time in four years. Due to the incredible success that the team had last year in league play, our program was moved to the WBAL’s tough Upper Division, where Varsity came in 5th and narrowly missed making CCS playoffs. Our girls held their own in league play and will return to the upper division ths season. JV had an incredible year finishing with an overall record of 7-3-3. The team ended up 2nd in league play and just missed the championship with a close loss to Menlo, who won the league. We have some great talent on the JV team who will most definitely be Varsity players in the future.

• SWIMMING - Under new leadership, the swim program is growing and maturing with 23 girls on last year’s roster. At the end of the season we had 13 girls swimming at league trials and all of them had recorded at least one personal record in their marks. That kind of dedication to improvement is exactly what the program needs to carry into a successful next season.

• TRACK AND FIELD - Last season, we had 16 girls with a ton of heart on the roster. Though they battled some persistent injuries, the team never quit working hard. At the league championships, the girls established 16 personal and season bests. All four relay teams ran their best times of the season as well. With no seniors, the girls will return with solid foundational experience to build on next season.

SPIRIT SQUADS

As you read in the Spring Oaks, our Spirit Squads had a long road to Vegas Nationals but they overcame competitive and logistical hurdles to bring home trophies. From injuries to cancelled flights, dance and cheer rallied together to support their fellow Mercy girls throughout the year. The Cheer team showed incredible Tri-School spirit by representing Mercy at Serra football and basketball games.

BASKETBALL

SPIRIT SPECTACULAR Every spring, Mercy Spirit Squads host a competition for Middle School teams called Spirit Spectacular. In a full afternoon of pep, local middle school teams showcase their programs through dance, cheer, and tumbling. The program was created as a way to celebrate spirit programs and athletics, and is a great opportunity for middle school girls to get to know Mercy and our school spirit. With six schools competing this year, St. Veronica’s took home the 1st place trophy!

The basketball team had a strong pre season record of 9-4 and went into the regular conference season with high hopes. The team qualified for CCS and was given a tough opening game in Carmel. The team endured a long trip and beat the odds to come away with a 10 point win. In the 2nd round, they beat the 6th seed (Scotts Valley) with a thrilling one point victory that earned them coverage in the San Mateo Daily Journal and WBAL. Their run was stopped in the Quarter Finals, but the team never backed down, and we are excited about the future of Mercy Basketball!

SOFTBALL

The team won the WBAL League Championship with a league record of 13-1. The last time a Mercy team won league was in 2009! The team also made CCS playoffs for the 3rd year in a row. They were featured on 49ers Cal-Hi Sports Report twice, with coverage detailing a win over Kings Academy and later an interview with the team. With a young roster and no seniors leaving, we look forward to what the team can achieve this year!

Senior Athlete of the Year KATHLEEN MCHALE

A consistent force in Mercy’s Athletics program, Kate was a four-year player in basketball and volleyball and also played two years of softball. As a senior, Kate served an integral role in Varsity Basketball as the team advanced to the quarter finals of CCS playoffs. She led the team in blocks, rebounds, minutes played, and was 4th on the team in scoring. She made 2nd Team All-League. Her skills and defense in the key will be sorely missed by the team for this upcoming season. Kate was a middle blocker on the volleyball team. She overcame an ankle injury early in the season, and never quit working hard in rehab to ensure that she would be back in action by league play. With Kate at her best play level yet, the team advanced to the second round of CCS playoffs. THE OAKS WINTER 2019 21

WELCOME BACK!

Students & faculty gathered for Orientation and the start of school in August The excitement is palpable the first week of school! It’s fun to reconnect with friends, swap summer stories, and get ready for a great new year. Of course we met new friendly faces in the Class of 2023 and in the faculty including Head of School Natalie Cirigliano Brosnan. Mercy welcomed freshmen students to campus with fun traditions, led by Claire Rietmann-Grout ‘04, Assistant Head of School for Student Life, and Mercy’s upper class Link Crew, our student-led orientation leadership team. The Community gathered in the Mercy Chapel for the Mass of the Holy Spirit to come together and set our intention for the year. The back-to-school energy and excitement was on full display at our Welcome Rally! It introduced our new students and faculty to the enthusiasm of the Mercy community and student sisterhood.

Family Tradition Senior Reagan Sammons ’20 welcomed her cousins, Olivia Langridge ’23 and Isabella Musich ’23, to Mercy - all third generation Mercy girls! It is exciting to see the legacy of Mercy education being passed on to the next generation. (Jeannie Britschgi Gallagher ’57, Christine Kelly Langridge ’69, Karen Gallagher Sammons ‘82, Colleen Gallagher Langridge ‘92, and Mary K Gallagher Musich ‘90)

MERCY DAY

A cherished, time-honored tradition, Mercy Week celebrates our Sister of Mercy heritage and foundress Catherine McAuley who opened the first House of Mercy in Ireland in 1827. Every year our faculty and students plan events, activities, and a Mass to reflect on the Sisters' charism that drives our community, including the Sisters of Mercy's Critical Concerns. This year, we focused on the topic of Women - exploring specifically what it means to be a confident woman in today's world. The morning's beautiful liturgy was centered on the idea of 'home,' a place where you belong. Our speakers emphasized that strength and faith are fed by a sense of community. They encouraged us to treasure the Mercy Sisterhood - the bonds we share with one another and the women who came before us. We were blessed to have many Mercy alumnae come 'home' to conduct workshops with students on topics ranging from budgeting and finance, to networking, car maintenance, and cooking skills.

Hannah Fox ’15

Of course, Mercy Day concluded with a spirited rally on the Green! We loved having our alumnae stay to celebrate with us, and we were filled with gratitude for our Mercy community and sisterhood.

HEAD OF SCHOOL BBQ Natalie Cirigliano Brosnan welcomed new and returning parents at the annual Head of School Welcome BBQ in August. It was wonderful to see parents meeting and mingling with old friends and making new ones. Mercy is proud of our vibrant, close-knit parent community. Thank you to Emergency BBQ (Sowers family, Meaghan ‘21) for the delicious spread at the event.

MERCY-A-THON Mercy held its 25th Annual Student Fundraiser during Mercy Week 2019! The annual student fundraiser (formerly the Walk-A-Thon, Bowl-A-Thon, and Dance-AThon), now called Mercy-A-Thon, was held at Sky High Sports in Burlingame (owned by the family of alumna Nicole Manning ‘17). The day was filled with dodgeball tournaments, class competitions, a live DJ, arcade games, acrobatics, and of course lots of jumping and laughter. Our students raised nearly $80,000 to benefit programs like Campus Ministry, Athletics, and Student Life. One of the direct outcomes of Mercy-A-Thon ‘19 fundraising was the installation of two new water stations in Russell Hall - supporting Mercy’s mission of caring for the environment and reducing plastic waste. ALUMNAE

This September we welcomed more than 200 alumnae back to Mercy to celebrate milestone reunions at Homecoming. From a morning coffee reception with the Sisters of Mercy and a special Mass, to a lively luncheon in the Mansion, the spirit throughout the day spoke to the amazing energy from all of our Mercy women. Many thanks to all who attended for making it such an inspiring and enjoyable event!

Mark your calendar for next year's Homecoming, honoring classes ending in 0’s and 5’s, which will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2020. We hope to see many alums in attendance!

THE

Mercy Annual Fund

The Mercy Annual Fund is the cornerstone of philanthropy at Mercy. The Mercy Annual Fund helps us to bridge

the gap between the cost of tuition and the true cost to educate each young woman. Your gift supports every critical area of the school, and we are excited to begin exploring new programs as well as needed facility updates. Currently we are working on a number of projects that the Mercy Annual Fund will help to support financially. We have begun a new academic initiative developing a STEM program for our young women that ties together the current tremendous math and science offerings, while building new courses and opportunities that will prepare students for college and workplace expectations. We are also looking to update the interior of our school buildings, including painting the interior wing, and a potential remodel of one of our student bathrooms. Additionally, we are hopeful to raise funds to purchase new laptops so that our Multimedia Lab room can be reimagined and outfitted to meet the needs of today’s learners and our growing school. We are in exciting times at Mercy! We thank you for your support, and invite you to continue to be part of our mission to educate young women. Your support truly makes a difference in the lives of our students and the programs that we are able to offer. Quite simply, without your support these programs would not be possible to offer to our students. On behalf of our students, thank you for the tremendous impact you make in their lives.

1941

Ruth Curran Dolim turned 95 on February 6, 2019. The whole family came home on the weekend of February 2, 2019, including Steve and Margie Dolim, Michael and Stephanie Dolim, Clare Dolim, Judy Dolim Shafer ‘77 and Lily Shafer, as well as Greg Dolim and Terry Timmons Dillon. They celebrated with a wonderfully delicious lunch at Mezzaluna in Half Moon Bay. A good time was had by all!

Motel restaurant in Millbrae. We dwindled from 30 to three and this year only Mary Monast Carvalho and Roberta still hope to have lunch there before the year is out. Joan Retchless Lawson died this year and Pat Morton Butler is unable to travel. I wish I could tell all our stories, the joys and sorrows of 69 years! We will never forget our four years at Mercy that gave us a wonderful, educated start to our Future!”

1947

Joan Lorentz Del Secco enjoyed a fun lunch with

Sr. Marilyn Gouailhardou ‘47, RSM, Natalie Cirigliano Brosnan ‘02, and Mary Lund.

1949

Kathleen Morgan Hatthorn now lives in Helena, MT with her husband Marv, near their daughter Siobhan.

1950

Roberta Pinn Craig writes, “It has been 69 years since our Class of 35 young women graduated from Mercy High School, Burlingame. Our stories are varied and remarkable as we are. We started meeting every April, ten years after Graduation. Three of our classmates had died and we felt it necessary to keep in touch. First our Reunions took place in someone’s home and then in various restaurants and finally for years, at the El Rancho 42 MERCY HIGH SCHOOL BURLINGAME

1953

Lois Daly Bonvicino, JoAnn Lyons Quadt, Kathleen Doherty Moran, and Nancy Conway DeSmedt got together at Kinkaid’s in Burlingame for lunch on August 6th. They can’t believe it’s been 66 years since they graduated. Lois writes that the gathering was filled with “lots of laughs and lasting friendship!”

1955

Carol Ann Bocci Nulk and her husband Bob celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends on June 13, 2019. Subsequently they took an adventurous land and sea cruise tour to Alaska seeing breaching whales, eagles, sea otters, puffins, bears and lots of ice! Many beautiful scenes, glaciers and mountains where the culture for many is to live off the grid. Absolutely fascinating! They traveled by train, bus, plane and ship from the Inside Passage to the Yukon, Barrow on the Arctic Coast, Mt. Denali, Anchorage, Homer and Kodiak. A wonderful way to celebrate many years of love and happiness. Carol writes, “We have been truly blessed.”

CLASS NOTES Liz Emrey, Diana Gaul Cull, Maureen “Muffy” Murphy Jenkins, and Sister Joan Burke met

1956

Ann Duffy Meuser has moved with her husband Bill to Denver, North Carolina a little over a year ago to be near their daughter, Jeanette, and her family. It took them awhile to get use to the new area and weather. So far they have lived through two hurricanes, falling trees and being snowed in. It’s a lot different from California! They have had a busy year, including the marriages of three grandsons, and the birth of twin great-grandchildren. Ann and Bill now have 13 great-grandchildren and feel so blessed.

together for lunch on July 1st. Joan is on medical leave from her mission work in Kenya. Liz is a pastor in Charlottesville. Diana and Muffy are both retired now. They have kept up their friendship for over 60 years!

1958

Jeanne Bergquam Doerr became a widow in 2007. Since then she has made several trips to Italy and China teaching English as a second language. She retired from Franchise Tax and completed her BS in Gerontology. Jeanne has 3 children and 6 grandsons, and is presently living in Indio, CA.

1959

Janice Pelfini Marshall just got back from Calistoga, where she had a wonderful time with her family. Calistoga has wonderful food, wine, and sunshine, the perfect place to relax. Janice has two grandsons: Colin is a senior this year, and majoring in film at Loyola Marymount, and Justin will be a freshman at Cal Poly.

1960

Patricia Conway Putkey and Mary McCarrick ’64 are traveling together again, this time on another Jesuit pilgrimage in Paris.

1961

Sister Philip (Sharon) Ellenberger had a busy year. In May she was able to attend the graduation of her great nephew, Bijan Varjavand, from John Hopkins University with honors. He is the grandson of her sister, Susan Varjavand ‘59, deceased last September. He is a fine young man, and staying over there to get his masters. Sister Philip came home to have her left shoulder replaced (due to arthritic changes) and the healing has been amazing. Then she directed two Sisters’ 30 day retreats in preparation for their final vows. (PHOTO above Sr. Phillip, second from right, at the community’s August birthday party.)

1962

Maureen Murphy Jenkins just welcomed her fifth grandchild, little Beckett Leroy Jenkins-Brown, into the family, a most beautiful baby. The entire family is delighted and grateful to God!

1963

Maureen Marconi and her husband just returned from a relaxing trip sailing along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers aboard the American Queen steamboat. It was like stepping back in time to the early-to-mid 1800s when steamboating was the only way to travel along America’s rivers. They visited the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park and the Abe Lincolm museum in Hodgenville, KY.

1964

Peggy Cosgrave still lives in New York City and will mark 50 years as a professional actor next year. Earlier this year, she won the 2019 Connecticut Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play for her performance in “Ripcord.” She will be appearing in “Over the River and Through the Woods” and “Kalamazoo” this fall. In November, Peggy will spend two weeks in Venice, Italy along with her niece

Heather Cassell ‘91.

1967

Jan Pariani Caron and her husband Joey celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their two sons, their wives, and four granddaughters in Lago Maggiore, Italy this summer. They made lots of memories which included tons of laughs and even more gelato! Jan writes, “We might go a little slower at 70 but we keep going and are enjoying every minute.”

Class Update: The Class of 1969’s 50th reunion celebration spanned two days, with a Saturday night dinner at the Crowne Plaza in Foster City and Sunday activities at Mercy. Both events attracted over 40 classmates for a total of 53 different participants, coming from Connecticut, New York, Alaska and Oregon as well as throughout California. Lynne Rosaia was the masterful instigator and organizer, Janice Cappa Rodondi the adroit decorator (who included a poignant memorial for the 10 classmates who have passed on), and Kitty Burns-Nasrow the trivia contest creator. Lori Breining Gelvin showed the 60th birthday class video and Val Armento set up a school and P.E. uniform display both days. For roughly 20 hours, “The Majestics” reigned, and a good time was had by all. Inspired by the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics to do more than just the occasional recreational swim, Val Armento (PHOTO at left) recently completed 10,000 miles. She started with only one-quarter to one-half mile at a time, then worked up to one mile or more. For the past decade, she has swum at least 365 miles a year.

friends and family rallying together, they raised enough funds to help with expenses and fly her and her children back to her hometown of South San Francisco; Brian’s last wish was to show his children his old stomping grounds and re-introduce them to the glory and beauty of the great Lake Tahoe. It was the first time their children had been back to California since their departure, almost 23 year ago, to San Antonio, Texas. There they raised four children together: Kyle (29), Victoria (25), Cassidy (Rabago, 23) and Nathan (19) and have two grandchildren: Hazel (5) and Silas (3) Morton, with a third on the way.
