From the Head of School
Dear Mercy Community:
David Brooks in his bestselling book, The Road to Character, wrote about the diference between resume virtues and eulogy virtues. Resume virtues being the “skills you bring to the job market and that contribute to external success.” Eulogy virtues being “the ones that exist at the core of your being – whether you are kind, brave, honest or faithful; what kind of relationships you formed.”
It is certainly the job of all schools to make sure our students graduate with resume skills. Skills that not only benefit them in the job maret but help them matriculate into good colleges and universities that, in turn, make major contributions to those resume skills. Schools like Mercy, partnering with families, also have a keen responsibility to foster the eulogy virtues; those traits that make how we live and what we live for worthwhile and merciful.
In these pages you will find acomplished women – current Mercy students, 2015 graduates and alumnae – whose resume virtues have helped them to excel academically, athletically, in a variety of fields and y doing extraordinary things extraordinarily well. What really makes them accomplished, however, are the eulogy virtues they all possess – compassion, faithfulness, kindness, a passion for service, humility and love. Virtues shared by Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy and emphasized in our mission at Mercy High School.
Pope Francis has decreed a Jubilee to be called the Holy Year of Mercy beginning on December 8, 2015, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (and the closing of Vatican Council II), and concluding on November 20, 2016, the Feast of Christ the King. In announcing the Jubilee year Pope Francis wrote, “…mercy is a key word that indicates God’s action towards us. Just as he is merciful, so we are called to be merciful to each other. May it open us to even more fervent dialogue so that we might know and understand one another better; may it eliminate every form of closed-mindedness and disrespect, and drive out every form of violence and discrimination.” Eulogy virtues all!
Just as Mercy High School joyously celebrated the Pope’s visit to the United States in mid-September, we are planning year-long activities to recognize and commemorate the Holy Year of Mercy. Check the Mercy web site (www.mercyhsb.com) to see what is on tap. I hope, when possible, you will join us in marking this special year.

Welcome Mercy Class of 2019!
By the Numbers . . .
• Every freshman has a “Big Sister” to help welcome her into the Mercy community
• 75% of our students are Roman Catholic
• 49% of freshmen are playing on a fall sports team from freshman volleyball to varsity water polo
• The Freshman Class comes from nearly 50 Catholic, public and private schools throughout San Mateo County, San Francisco, Palo Alto and the East Bay
• The average freshman is involved in at least one extra-curricular activity: academic decathlons, athletics, music, dance, performing arts, parish and community leadership and volunteer opportunities
Following in their Footsteps
Mercy Burlingame is proud to have four new freshmen following in their mother’s footsteps as they carry on the legacy of becoming a Mercy Crusader.
This year Mercy welcomes (bottom to top): McKayla Fagliano, daughter of Sheila Fagliano Zamora ‘98; Kate Schorno, daughter of Jamee Constantinos Schorno ‘83; Victoria Grace Pieri, daughter of Denise Barbagelata Pieri ‘89 and Ruby Mayne, daughter of Arlene Susmilch Mayne ‘84.

Making A Diference Raises Record Donations
Last May’s Making A Diference dinner was a tremendous success raising a record $280,018 for Mercy’s tuition assistance program. We were thrilled that this was the most successful Making A Diference in our 11 year history. We are so proud that the amount we raised represents a 17% increase over last year and a 35% increase over two years ago. All of our donors can be very proud in knowing that they have helped so many young women benefit fom a Mercy education.
Mercy’s signature annual event drew a sell-out crowd, all of whom share a deep passion for Mercy education. We are especially grateful to our Keynote Speaker Brandy Martinez Navarro ’98, student speaker Sammy Baker ’15, and those who shared their stories in our video: Veronica Smart ’11, Jasmine Visperas ’15, and Rita Arnold ’75 with her daughters Sophia ’15 and Angelica ’17. Each of you were an inspiration to each of us. The Making A Diference video is posted to Mercy’s website under Giving.
A special thank you to the Board of Directors for underwriting the event; 100% of all sponsorships and donations directly support tuition assistance.

Mercy Girls Visit Japan
International exchange students from Nakamura Gakuen High School, an all-girls school in Fukuoka, Japan, joined us in the Spring of 2015. Each of the girls stayed with a Mercy “host” family. The girls came to Mercy with their “host” sister, participated in English conversation classes and various activities during the day and spent afternoons and evenings with their host families.
This summer, our Mercy “host” students had the amazing opportunity to join their friends in Fukuoka. They tried diferent foods, participated in Martial Arts, were greeted by the students of Nakamura Gakuen with a wonderful assembly and were presented a beautiful Hakata painting to bring back with them. Throughout their trip they visited the Atomic Bomb museum in Nagasaki, participated in a traditional Tea Ceremony and a Flower Arrangement class.
We encourage our girls to be global citizens and seek every opportunity to learn about other cultures. We believe the International Exchange Program is a rewarding experience for the international student as well as Mercy students, faculty, staff and amilies.

Tri-School Leadership Summit
In September, Mercy hosted their fifth annual ri-School Leadership Summit. The morning's events were led by musical sensation Jesse Manibusan - a composer, singer/songwriter, storyteller, humorist, catechist, evangelizer and encourager. After performing and inspiring students around the world, Jesse brought his knack for building instant rapport, and cultivating the joy that inspires service, sacrifie and the celebration of life to the Mercy campus. We are so grateful for this unique leadership experience, bringing Mercy, Notre Dame and Serra, together, as one leadership powerhouse.
Tri-School Students Perform at Disneyland
During spring break, members of Mercy Chorale, the Tri-School Symphonic Band, and Serra’s Chorus shared their musical talents at Disneyland. The students also participated in clinics. The choruses combined for a musical theater audition workshop, where they not only learned a song and dance combination from the musical Newsies, but were taught all aspects of what should go into an audition.
Tri-School Walk for Catholic Worker House
On September 12th, students from Mercy, Notre Dame and Serra High School along with their teachers and family members walked 4.4 miles from Mercy to the San Bruno Catholic Worker House Hospitality House to raise money and awareness.

Meet Our Counselors!
Mercy counseling has two academic counselors in Michele Macmillan and Caroline O’Sullivan. Michele is the counselor for sophomores and seniors while Caroline works with the freshmen and juniors. As your student progresses throughout her time at Mercy, her academic counselor will stay with her during her four years. The academic counselors works with students to create a four year academic plan that is appropriately rigorous while ensuring that students access the needed supports on and off campus
Francesca Ohanessian is Mercy’s college counselor. She works with students starting from freshmen year to begin college planning through an introduction to Naviance, our online college portal, and talking about ways to build a resume. Individual college meetings happen most frequently during junior and senior year.
This year we are pleased to have the addition of a wellness counselor in Joy Phillips. Joy will create programming targeted at helping students develop skills necessary for leading a balanced life. She is also available for brief individual appointments when students seek a trusted adult to talk to about the challenges of teenage life. Mercy counseling looks forward to partnering with you to ensure your daughter’s success!
Mercy Takes 1st
Mercy is proud to announce that Annie Breidinger of HIllsborough won 1st place in this year's Young Men’s Institute (YMI) Essay Contest. Annie along with other Mercy students submitted entries to the YMI national contest. This year, there were nearly 1,000 entries submitted. Mercy High School Burlingame has been a participant since 2002. Students were asked to write a 500 word essay responding to the topic "How has social media impacted the decisions you are making in high school?"
The contest always proves to be a fine opportunity or our students to demonstrate their writing and critical thinking skills. This year, three sophomores (now juniors) in the English Honors class took home awards. Annie Breidinger of HIllsborough won 1st place and received $1,000; Bianca Gonzalez of Colma achieved 6th place, earning $200; and Hayley Massucco of San Bruno won 13th place and $100. Congratulations to all three Mercy Burlingame winners!

Grease is the Word!
Tri-School Productions students from Mercy, Serra, and Notre Dame present Grease!
From Burger Palace Boys and Pink Ladies to drag races and dance halls, Tri-School Productions delighted audiences of all ages with this year’s spring musical, Grease. “Grease is my all-time favorite show,” said Director/Choreographer Gennine Harrington. “People love the 1950s. Grease, in particular, has such a cult following due to the movie with John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. It really is impossible to sit through the show and not smile. Our Tri-School cast is super talented. Their big hair looked great and they proved that the Hand Jive is alive and well in 2015!”
Grease tells the timeless love story of Sandy and Danny, who were played by Mercy senior Paige Morrisey and Serra junior Ian Tighe. “It was interesting to play such a confident chaacter,” Tighe said. “Everything I did was so bold. Grease is a carefree and fun show.” “Anyone can relate to Grease,” added Mercy junior Cat Bigelow, who played Patty Simcox. “It’s a show for all ages.” In a power struggle of high school cliques and high-energy escapades, the Tri-School production was packed with memorable show tunes, exceptional choreography and mesmerizing sets. Serra Music Director, Jay Jordan, said Grease was the perfect show for this year’s senior class. “We have a core group of talented seniors who have been with the program all four years,” he noted. “Watching them in Grease, their final shw, makes me very grateful for all that they have given to Tri-School Productions...” —An except from Serra High School Tradition Publication

Words of Wisdom
Congresswoman Jackie Speier ‘68 (parent of Stephanie Sierra ’12) spoke with the senior class just weeks before their graduation. Jackie’s message was simple – always make sure that you have the knowledge and skills to take care of yourself throughout your lifetime. She told the girls that there will be joys and that there will also be hard times, some filled with adersity, but that if they rely on family, friends and faith that they will get through it all.
Congresswoman Speier spoke candidly of her career, and of how profoundly the People’s Temple and the Jonestown massacre afected her life. She told the girls how she choose to be a survivor, and to not let moments like those define her but used the lesson to help shape her into the woman she is today. She spoke of love and loss and how through it all – that some of the girls sitting around this room today would always be there for you because they were now a part of a special sisterhood - the Mercy sisterhood!

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
A Message from the Director of Advancement
As a Mercy School, we have much to celebrate. Today’s students are experiencing unparalleled learning opportunities at Mercy. By building upon our existing programs and developing new initiatives, we foster opportunities for our students to grow in faith and leadership, and into the young women that God has called them to be. The development of the whole person remains the heart of a Mercy education.
Mercy is truly an exceptional community of students, faculty, staf, parents, alumnae and friends. The gifts you give make the diference between a good school and a school that is truly special. Your support helps to provide excellent academics, state of the art technology, service learning, athletics, visual and performing arts, counseling and professional development for faculty. Together we continue a legacy of high achievement both in and out of the classroom and a strong financial oundation not only for today but for the future.
As a Mercy alumnae parent, I have seen firt-hand the impact of a Mercy education and I have a passion for ensuring the success of Mercy for generations to come. Your gift, no matter the amount, matters. On behalf of the entire Mercy community, I extend my heartfelt thanks for your generosity.
—Mary Lund

Mariann Byerwalter ‘78 Receives Two Prestigious Awards
Dean’s Medal, Stanford School of Medicine
Mariann Byerwalter ‘78 (Stanford BA ‘82, Harvard MBA ‘84) pictured above with Dr. Lloyd Minor, Dean of the Stanford Medical School. was recently honored with the Dean’s Medal, one of the highest bestowed by the Stanford School of Medicine.
Mariann Byerwalter, MBA, is currently on the board of directors of Stanford Health Care and of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, and she also chairs the board of directors of SRI International Inc.; The Dean’s Medal recognizes individuals whose scientific, medical, humanitarian or othr contributions have significantly adanced the mission of Stanford Medicine. “Mariann is a visionary individual who has worked tirelessly on behalf of Stanford Medicine, helping provide financial tability and recruit new faculty to lead the enterprise,” said Lloyd Minor, MD, dean of the medical school.
Mariann, who earned her bachelor’s degree from Stanford in 1982, has interwoven her career in business, as a banker and entrepreneur, over the last 30 years with her volunteer service at the university. As a Stanford senior, she received the Wallace Sterling Award for outstanding academic achievement, beginning a longstanding connection to Sterling, the university’s former chancellor, who encouraged her to remain involved, she said. She was elected to the university Board of Trustees in the early 1990s and shortly after joined the board of the children’s hospital. “That was my firt involvement with Stanford Medicine, and it really touched my heart,” she said.
“To be recognized by the school and the dean and my colleagues is very humbling, as my work with Stanford University and Stanford Medicine has been the most rewarding and fulfilling of y entire professional career,” Byerwalter said.
Gold Spike Award, Stanford Associates
Alumni Mariann Byerwalter ‘78, AB ’82, received a 2015 Gold Spike Award, the university’s highest honor for volunteer service. The award is presented annually by Stanford Associates, an honorary organization of more than 2,600 Stanford alumni who have demonstrated significant and long-tanding volunteer service to the university.
“Faculty, administrators and fellow alumni respect Mariann’s clear vision, seriousness of purpose, energy and keen focus,” Stanford Associates said in an announcement. “Just as readily, they value the kind of person that she is – warm and gracious and genuinely interested in the lives of those around her. She is famous for her heartfelt thank you notes and goes to great lengths to recognize individuals that contribute to a project at every level of the organization.”
Stanford Associates described the breadth of Byerwalter’s volunteer service as “exceptional.” She has served three terms on the Stanford University Board of Trustees, and has been the chair of the board of directors of the Stanford Alumni Association. Her service on the boards of Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford has spanned more than 20 years, including 8 years as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Stanford Hospital & Clinics, and she remains a member of both boards today. She has served on the boards of the Stanford Management Company and the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Athletic Fund.
“Over the past 30 years, Mariann has united numerous alumni and staff in a vision or what lies ahead for Stanford, what’s possible and how it can be accomplished,” Stanford Associates said. “Mariann is truly a force that has made a deep, broad and enduring impact on this university.”

One Box for Hope
Laura Lencioni, PsyD ’96 and Gina Lencioni ‘00
When psychologist Laura Lencioni, PsyD ’96 and her sister Gina ’00 (a teacher), travel to La Concepcion, Nicaragua, they don’t pack lightly. That’s because Laura and her family are traveling with bags — most recently with 15 green military-style bags to be exact — filled with dontions of socks, underwear, shoes, clothes, school supplies, and wellness items for children in rural areas of Nicaragua. Because her husband’s family lives there, Laura has been making the trip for about 13 years. About fie years ago, she and her husband brought some of their son’s toys for the local children. “It was a very eye-opening experience,” she said. “The schools didn’t have books; there wasn’t a blackboard on the wall — just a table in the middle of the room. I came home, and told my sister and my co-workers about the experience, and people started giving me things to bring on my next trip.”
After visiting a school in Temua, Nicaragua and distributing a small amount of toys and clothing, Laura and Gina realized the severity of poverty in parts of the country. The school they visited had bare walls, no electricity, and very little supplies. Knowing what schools are like in America, it was shocking to see the children of this country attempting to educate themselves without the proper materials. In addition, these children had no means of transportation and have to walk several miles on dirt roads, most of them barefoot, to get to their school and collect fresh drinking water. We saw how happy the kids were with just the one box of items we were able to bring on our own. When we got in the car to leave the school, we were both crying. With that one box we were able to give 45 children hope. We thought about the impact that larger donations could have on this area. The desire to do more brought about the inception of this organization.
Since that firt trip in February 2010, we have made several other trips with multiple boxes of clothing and school supplies. On our last visit we personally distributed items to over 120 children. Our plan is to continue this work in bringing more hope to the kids in this area.
We personally deliver and distribute all donations to the children in these rural areas of Nicaragua. 100% of your donation goes directly to the children in need. We pay our own airfare and stay with relatives and friends in Nicaragua. We take time from our vacation to help those in need. In fact, our vacations have now become our work which we love!
Our new project is to try to collect Barbie’s and action figues to bring to the children the next time we go. While we want to make sure they have necessities like shoes and clothing, we also like to bring some fun extras to the kids each time we go. To learn more about their work, visit their website at www.oneboxforhope.org

Valerie Schuld White writes, “I am living at the Parkway Chateau, a retirement residence in beautiful Bellingham, Washington. My dear little grand daughters are teaching me to use the computer. Mary Lou Woodman Whitcomb lives with her husband of 55 years in South Lake Tahoe. She is an active member of Soroptimist International, an organization formed to help women and children in need. She is also enjoying singing and playing her ukulele with 50+ other folks every Tuesday evening. She and her husband enjoy the natural beauty of the mountain life. They travelled to South America and Antarctica last year! Mary Lou writes, “We love to stay in touch with our Bay Area friends, especially Mercy Alumnae! We have three delightful adult daughters and four athletic grandsons.”

Bel Leon Rennels writes, “My husband (Don) and I traveled to Vienna, Austria as well as Slovenia and Croatia in midMay for 3 weeks. Our firt evening was spent sipping wine and eating appetizers alongside the Danube River. Vienna is a magnifient city with so much history, palaces, art museums, monuments and, of course, music. We enjoyed a wonderful Bach music event as well as excellent food and wine. Slovenia was a pleasant surprise in that it has such natural beauty, especially in the Lake Bled area. We confess ignorance at what a lovely, clean and cultured country it is, despite its recent independence struggle. The same holds for Croatia which possesses the UNESCO Heritage Site Plitvice Lakes National Park. Multiple waterfalls (remember falls with water?) are breathtaking as is the surrounding forest. Great hiking! We are so thankful to be able to travel in our retirement years. Cabo San Lucas is next, Giants Spring Training in Scottsdale, AZ in March and another big trip next summer. Stay tuned.“

Judith Maule (PHOTOs) writes, “The Maule and Dever families gathered for their biennial four-day reunion held in 2014 at Stinson Beach. We enjoyed being together for picnics, dinners, beach walks and a hike up the mountain. Not everyone did everything: picking and choosing activities was half the fun. Jane Maule Nichols ’47 especially enjoyed sitting in the yard talking with family members (her six daughters and son hosted this year’s reunion), while Kimberly Maule Boyle ’88 was kept busy by her three active children as she visited with her dad, Joshua Maule, III (Serra ’48) and family. Patty Smith Hendel ’64 attended with her two brothers, John (Serra ’65) and Cyril Smith, and sister-in-law Rendell Smith. Judith Maule ’62 and her husband Jeff aylor joined three of their children and four grand children at the reunion. I have to put drops in my eye for about three weeks. On Sept 8th I go back to the doctor. Maybe I will not need to wear glasses, except for reading, and my right eye does not need the surgery right now. I was given a Pollaroied sunglass, and a protective eye glass if I need them. God bless all of you.”

I leave with many, many good memories and experiences. With no specific plans other than o not be tied to a bell schedule/clock, I am starting this new chapter by spending the summer and early fall on Sand Lake in northern Minnesota watching the baby eagles, loons, mergansers and geese grow and survive, enjoying fourwheeling adventures, learning to fis and being mesmerized by the beauty of thunderstorms. We flw to Milan and drove through Italy covering the Dolomites, Lake Como, Verona and Venice where we met up with our ship, the Crystal Serenity to celebrate my 60th birthday. We cruised about 1500 miles, including Croatia, Montenegro, the Amalf Coast and the south of France. It was a dream come true. The other love of my life is my newest grandson, William Robert Massaro. My two daughters, Allison and Tracy each have two children now - Gianna, Emelia, Hannah and now William. He is 4 months old. They live in Santa Barbara and San Carlos. Lynn, along with her family and friends celebrated her special day at Rockaway Beach in Pacifica. Nicks Restaurant was the location, around since before we were born. Lynn’s mother Patricia, and her many sisters, brother, niece and nephew helped celebrate. Using her charm bracelet as timeline, we were able to reminisce about things she has done and places she has been. Lynn spent her career as a Registered Nurse, truly a labor of love. She especially enjoyed her maternity assignment. She and her late husband Len traveled to many countries that she remembers with a bright smile. Lynn has fie sisters and one brother. She also has 12 nieces and nephews. Lets not forget her very lively 90 year old mother Patricia, whom everyone fights ver. A fun time was had by all.”

Janine Mignault Grewald recently held a fundraiser for SVdP’s Catherine Center. Janine writes, “I learned about the Catherine Center when attending my 40th high school reunion last year! As both Sisters Marguerite and Suzanne had a profound impact on my life during my high school years, I was more than excited to do a fundraiser via my Mary Kay Business. As Mary Kay’s mission is about enriching women’s lives, this presented the perfect opportunity.” Janine held a special session on skin care with personalized bags of donated Mary Kay products. The women enjoyed their make-over, and asked lots of questions about starting a business and the life of a sales rep. Catherine Center serves women transitioning from incarceration back into society by providing a safe, loving place for women to learn about themselves, heal past wounds, learn new behaviors and most of all, to be transformed by the power of love.

Jackie writes, “In attendance at my wedding was my Mercy group fondly known as ‘the nine’. Unfortunately only 6 of them could make it. My best friend from the group, Amanda Yang, was my maid of honor. we specifically did a pictue in reminiscent of prom pose. Once a Mercy Girl always a Mercy Girl! The nine and I try and get together at least once every other weekend, so we’re still all very close.” l to r: Emily Murphy, Kristy Carranza, Amanda Yang, Jackie Ko, Lauren Albiento, Priya Mehta, Joleysa Manese. not pictured Kathy Jesena & Alexa Rae Agustin.

Cathleen Bottini recently wrote an article about helping our veterans which was published in the Knoxville Times, Big News Network and the Orlando Echo. Brenna Brown’s mom sent the following update: “Brenna is doing great. She graduated last year from Gonzaga U with a major in International Relations and a minor in French (Madame Barthe will be proud!). She went on to a local internship with Rebuilding Alliance (a San Mateo non-profit tht helps rebuild war torn communities in the Middle East) and just returned from an internship from Senator Boxer’s DC ofce. She is currently planning her next step. She’s very interested in foreign afairs, international policy, and in doing some fiel work abroad. She’s reaching out to the Mercy International Association and also interested in pursuing assignments with Doctors Without Borders or Peace Corps.”
Jen Winnett recently graduated from UC Berkeley’s architecture program and now works at Cody Anderson Wasney Architects in Palo Alto, CA. As it turns out, one of her colleagues went to Mercy as well! Mary Desing ’02 has worked at CAW since 2007 and is a graduate of the architecture program at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Jen and Mary have enjoyed getting to know each other and swap stories of their days at Mercy, as well as look at each others’ yearbooks. These days, Jen is working on projects like the Old Chemistry building renovation at Stanford, and Mary is working on the construction of an elementary school campus in Los Altos and a classroom remodel at Stanford.

Catherine’s Legacy
Catherine’s Legacy . . . A Powerful Way to Change Mercy Students’ Lives
You’ve heard it before: “You should have a will.” Maybe you’re procrastinating, or perhaps you don’t realize how important estate planning can be in protecting your family’s future or even influencing the lies of Mercy High School students. By remembering us in your estate plans, you can make a diference for years to come. And did you also know there are potential tax-saving benefits with such a gift? Hee’s how you can get started.
A Gift in Your Will: Getting Started
We hope you’ll consider including a gift Mercy High School, Burlingame in your will or living trust. Called a charitable bequest, this type of gift ofers these main benefits
• Simplicity. Just a few sentences in your will or trust are all that is needed. The official bequest language for Mercy High School, Burlingame is: “I, [name], of [city, state, ZIP], give, devise and bequeath to Mercy High School, Burlingame [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted use and purpose.”
• Flexibility. Because you are not actually making a gift until after your lifetime, you can change your mind at any time.
• Versatility. You can structure the bequest to leave a specific iem or amount of money, make the gift contingent on certain events, or leave a percentage of your estate to us.
• Tax Relief. If your estate is subject to estate tax, your gift is entitled to an estate tax charitable deduction for the gift’s full value.
How It Works - To make a charitable bequest, you need a current will or revocable living trust. Your gift can be made as a percentage of your estate. Or you can make a specific bequet by giving a certain amount of cash, securities or property. After your lifetime, Mercy High School, Burlingame receives your gift. Your circumstances may change and you can change your gift at any time.
Putting Your Family First - When planning a future gift, it’s sometimes difficulto determine what size donation will make sense. Emergencies happen, and you need to make sure your family is financially taen care of firt. Including a bequest of a percentage of your estate ensures that your gift will remain proportionate no matter how your estate’s value fluctutes over the years.
