GREAT PEOPLE MAKE FAVORITE PLACES

BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.

Staff Member of the Month

JUNE

Since joining BCC last fall, Will has been an outstanding addition to the Grounds & Golf Maintenance Team, approaching each day with a positive, collaborative attitude and consistently demonstrating professionalism. Eager to learn and find solutions, he readily reaches out to industry contacts when needed and lives out our core value, “Do what’s right, not what’s easy,” by completing tasks quickly and efficiently while keeping budgeted goals in mind. Stepping into a role previously held for many years, Will has shown respect for the institutional knowledge of his predecessor while thoughtfully identifying opportunities for improvement, making him a dedicated, adaptable, and valued member of our team.

JULY

Carissa has consistently demonstrated an outstanding work ethic, positive attitude, and true “getit-done” mentality. When a team member stepped away in early May, she seamlessly stepped up as the go-to person on our Accounting Team—tackling not only her own responsibilities but also taking on new tasks for the first time in her career with confidence and commitment. She never once backs down from a challenge and approaches every day with determination and positivity. In addition to carrying a heavier workload, Carissa played a critical role in training and mentoring our two interns, serving as a trusted leader and support system throughout their onboarding. We are incredibly thankful for her contributions and so happy she’s a part of our team.

Simple Truth Award

Isabel Afong, Refreshment Stand Attendant

During a recent golf round, a member with a gluten allergy inquired about a snack. At the time, only First Tee bars were available, which the member determined were not gluten-free. Isabel could have left it at that, but she didn’t. Instead, she went out of her way to check the fridge and discovered a gluten-free option. Without hesitation, Isabel hopped in a cart and personally delivered the bar to the member out on the course. Isabel's thoughtful care and initiative went above and beyond expectations. The member was truly grateful and made a point to share just how much it meant to them. Thank you, Isabel, for your kindness and exceptional hospitality.

Patricia Goss, Member Relations Associate

A member recently contacted the Front Desk about leftover plants from the Spring Gardening Workshop, mistaking the annuals-to-go kits for perennial pollinator kits, which weren’t offered this year due to the Big Ten Tournament and Easter events. Though they declined assistance, a few days later Patricia learned it was their birthday. She teamed up with Cathy Wagner, who provided four assorted perennials from BCC’s propagation, labeled and ready. Patricia paired them with a birthday card and hand-delivered the gift to the member’s home, a gesture that brought tears to their eyes and left them deeply touched.

Have you been wanting to make a change with your eating habits, but aren’t sure where to start? Or have you tried to make a change, but it hasn’t worked in the long-term, and you’re stuck in a never-ending cycle of bad habits? It’s not a lack of willpower—it’s a lack of sustainable strategy.

Precision Nutrition can help! It aids in developing sustainable eating and lifestyle habits that become second-nature over time. The result: you become the fittest, healthiest version of yourself—and stay that way for good.

WHAT IS PRECISION NUTRITION?

Precision Nutrition is a personalized approach to diet and health that considers your unique goals and lifestyle habits to determine what works best for you. Precision Nutrition helps tailor recommendations to meet individual needs, recognizing that one size does not fit all.

WHAT CAN PRECISION NUTRITION DO FOR YOU?

Set up an initial consultation and work one-on-one with Nutrition Coach Caroline Fitzsimmons to create a nutrition and wellness plan uniquely designed for your lifestyle, preferences, and goals. During the 90-minute initial consultation, you’ll discuss eating habits, sleep habits, physical activity, your support system, stress and recovery, and more. Based on these factors, Caroline will input your information, including your physical activity levels, dietary preferences, and fitness goals, into a macro calculator.

This nutrition calculator will instantly provide you with daily macros, calories, and portions as your first step towards lasting change.

HOW CAN YOU APPLY PRECISION NUTRITION TODAY?

⊲ Eat the Rainbow - Incorporate a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables to maximize nutrient diversity and support gut health

⊲ Balance Your Plate - Aim for a mix of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates in each meal

⊲ Listen to Your Body - Pay attention to how different foods affect your energy, digestion, and mood. Keeping a simple food journal for a couple of weeks can help identify patterns

Kevin Willie Flowers 2025 BCC EVANS SCHOLAR

Beginning with Samantha Lannon, who graduated from The Ohio State University in 2021 and the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2025, Kevin is the eighth member of the Baltimore Country Club Caddie Program to earn an Evans Scholarship. After graduating from Loyola Blakefield this past June, Kevin plans to seek a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Maryland. He will be residing at the new Caves Valley Evans Scholars Scholarship House at the University of Maryland as a member of the University’s Class of 2029.

In 1960, the USGA presented Chick Evans with its highest honor, The Bob Jones Sportsmanship in Golf Award In 1975, Evans was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Despite these accolades and his fifty-four tournament victories, Evans viewed his greatest accomplishment as the success of

what began as his mother’s remedy for putting his golf earnings to a worthwhile purpose—the little charity that has grown into the largest college scholarship foundation in the United States—the Evans Scholars Foundation. Since 1930, there have been 12,575 Evans Scholars. Presently, 1,190 Evans Scholars are enrolled in Universities across America.

"Since 1930, there have been 12,575 Evans Scholars."

During an interview shortly before his death in 1979, Chick said, “Getting to meet the young people who have been able to benefit by becoming Evans Scholars has been my greatest thrill in golf.”

Were Chick alive today, he would be astonished by how his and his mother’s idea has enriched the lives of thousands of deserving young men and women who carried a golf bag. He would want to shake Kevin’s hand—maybe give him a pat on the back and say—'well done!' Kevin possesses the good character, desire to succeed, and commitment to others that exemplify the spirit embedded within the heart and soul of every Evans Scholar.

Just recently, I spoke to Kevin. He was in his dorm room at the University of Maryland, making new friends and preparing for his first semester as a college freshman. Kevin was pretty excited. And yes—he and a few of his new friends have started caddying at a local golf club.

I first met Kevin on Sunday, July 6, 2025 in the Five Farms 1924 Grille. He was

having lunch with Greg Jones, our Golf Professional Emeritus, who is involved in the Club’s Youth Caddie Program and the Evans Scholars Foundation. When we had an opportunity to sit down together, I asked Kevin what it meant to be an Evans Scholar. He did not have to think about his answer. Kevin said, “It means everything!”

Kevin was born in St. Agnes Hospital on January 28, 2007. His father is a retired army veteran with life threatening health problems that began with a cancer diagnosis. “After my parents separated,” Kevin said, “my dad raised me. Every morning when he dropped me off at Hilton Elementary School, he would say—‘Kevin, make sure you stay out of trouble!’”

When I began caddying and I was too young to drive, my father would drop me off and wait in the car until I was finished.

When Kevin was eight years old, Freddie Gray died in a police wagon. Kevin said, “what does an eight-year-old boy really know about the world around him— not very much.” Kevin remembers the anger; and he remembers the riots. “Kids,” he said, “do what their friends do. As I think back on that time (like many of my friends), my life could have gone very wrong.”

“My first big break was being invited to attend St. Ignatius Loyola Academy. The people at Ignatius taught me what the Jesuits meant about being ‘A Man for Others.’ Even before I graduated from St. Ignatius and went on to Loyola Blakefield, I was determined to be a better person, work hard, and make something of myself.”

"The important thing turned out to be the people I met along the way..."

“When I was invited to caddie, I did not know anything about golf. You might say, I learned as I went. The important thing turned out to be the people I met along the way, who, like my teachers at St. Ignatius and Loyola, encouraged me to succeed. They still do—especially here at the Club.”

“Mr. Leahy, who is a member here, took an interest in me. He asked me if I would like to be a caddie. I thought—why not? It was a way to earn some desperately needed money for my family. I wasn’t thinking about a college scholarship. Like many unexpected things in life, carrying a golf bag at Baltimore Country Club turned out to be vastly different than I expected.”

“Yes, I wanted to know everything about golf—how to be the best caddie—how to make a round of golf more fun. At the same time, I began to understand that learning the game of golf as a caddie was a gateway to a future I could never have imagined when I was a young boy growing up in Baltimore City.”

“I am an Evans Scholar because a lot of people believe in me. I will not let them down. This is why an Evans Scholarship means everything to me.”
