Banks & Barletta Emerge Victorious After Two-Hole Playoff

Pristine conditions and perfect temperatures led to a thrilling three days of golf and an exciting finish for the playing of our 67th Annual Gentlemen’s Member-Guest Golf Invitational.

Heading into the final round on Saturday morning, several teams entered brimming with confidence with large leads in their flights. But as we all know, no lead is safe in the Final Round of the Gentlemen’s Invitational. As the dust settled on round five, 22 flight-winning teams emerged and entered the three-hole aggregate alternate shot playoff, contested on holes #3, #8, and #9 of the East Course.

This year’s playoff proved to be an exciting one, with several groups making birdies on the first hole only to stumble across the finish line with bogeys on the eighth and ninth. Tommy Barletta, guest of Damien Banks, nearly holed his tee shot on the par three ninth, but the group could only salvage a par on the treacherous green. In another group, the team of Bryan Del Monte and Jonathan Kassolis made a bogey on the par four third but bounced back by driving the green on the par four eighth.

Brooklawn: John Minutoli & Bob Minutoli

Fenway: Philip Neubauer & Gregory Mendez

Kansas City: Damien Banks & Tommy Barletta

Unfortunately for team Del Monte, they were unable to capitalize on an uphill 12-footer for a net 1, and walked away with just a net birdie. In the final group, Harvey Byrd’s guest Scott Keenan holed an incredibly difficult side hill 30-foot putt to force a sudden death playoff with the team of Banks and Barletta. Both teams made a score of net five on the first playoff hole. On the second hole, Damien Banks and Tommy Barletta escaped with a net bogey to prevail in the playoff and cemented themselves in BCC history as the 67th Gentlemen’s Invitational Champions.

Thank you to our 264 golfers who participated in this year’s event! Congratulations to our 22 flight winners, our Senior and Super Senior Champions, and our Overall Champions—Damien Banks and Tommy Barletta.

FROM BCC FAIRWAYS TO UMD HALLWAYS

I am currently attending the University of Maryland College Park (UMD) as a rising senior, majoring in Secondary Education with a double major in History. Additionally, I serve as the President of the UMD Evans Scholar chapter. I started caddying at BCC in May 2021, so this marks my fourth summer caddying at the Club. Reflecting on my past three years at UMD, it's surreal to think I'll be entering my senior year next semester. My freshman year was filled with excitement about university life, especially following caddying for the BMW Championship at Caves Valley that year, I knew I would have so much fun. Truthfully, I did. My roommate and I got along wonderfully, and she continues to be one of my apartment mates, along with two others. My classes were so much fun, and making new friends was a highlight. That summer, leading up to my sophomore year, I caddied in the BMW ProAm at Wilmington Country Club. I also spent two weeks visiting Guyana, South America, where my parents are originally from.

Sophomore year seems like it was just yesterday. Kendall Opheikens (2022 BCC Evans Scholar) and I hung out nearly every day. Chances were, if you called one of us asking about that other, the other was sitting right there. A new dining hall opened on campus that fall and quickly became a popular spot. My classes were amazing, and I loved my schedule. I also started to work at the UMD Golf Course in April 2022 for their junior program. I absolutely love it and am so grateful I have the opportunity to work with the staff and juniors.

The summer before my junior year, I interned with the USGA during the US Open through their Pathways Internship program. I also started to work with the WGA to help build

up their caddie program at the UMD Golf Course. I highly recommend playing there and taking a caddie. This summer, five seniors were awarded the Evans Scholarship, enabling them to attend UMD, Rutgers, and Howard University.

To sum it all up, I just finished my junior year at UMD. I am so lucky to be majoring in what I am because I truly love my classes (except Economics; sorry, it’s not my forte).

During the fall semester, I completed a brief internship, a requirement for Secondary Education majors, to confirm my passion for teaching. I also successfully applied to the College of Education. My work with the WGA and UMD Golf Course continues to be fulfilling. Recently, I was invited to the Palmetto, where I met players and had the opportunity to play on one of the holes, which was a lot of fun.

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share my experience in this magazine. I also want to thank the members and staff of BCC for their ongoing support of the Caddie Program. Special thanks to Greg Jones and Brett Keller for their unwavering support throughout my time as a caddie. As Jack Palmer always says, “Take a caddie, change a life.”

CADDIE FACTS

In 1930, accomplished amateur golfer Chick Evans and the Western Golf Association (WGA) founded the Evans Scholars Foundation in Chicago to award full-ride college scholarships to caddies with limited financial needs. In the inaugural year, two scholarships were given out, with the recipients attending Northwestern University. 93 years later, 325 scholarships were awarded for the 2023-2024 school year. Since 1930, there are 12,040 Evans Scholar Alumni and 1,130 Evans Scholars currently enrolled at one of 24 leading universities throughout the United States.

BCC Major Golf Championships Trophy

THE HAVEMEYER TROPHY

In 1894, the rst president of the United States Golf Association (USGA), eodore A. Havemeyer, wanted the U.S. Amateur Trophy to be golf’s most inspiring prize. He donated the cup that was presented annually to the amateur Champion. In 1925, for the second year in a row, the Havemeyer Trophy was awarded to Bobby Jones.

On display at East Lake Country Club in Atlanta, Georgia, (Bobby Jones’ home club) it was destroyed in a massive re on November 22, 1925.

Rather than duplicate the original, the USGA chose a di erent design. It featured an extended base to accommodate additional engravings. e new Havemeyer Trophy was a tall, narrow steeple cup cra ed from gold. It was ready for presentation in 1926. Damaged during shipment to the site of the 1992 championship, the gold cup was repaired and retired to the USGA Museum. A less costly duplicate (electrochemical plating of a thin gold layer over sterling silver) has been passed from champion to champion ever since. In the spring of 2012, the gold Havemeyer Cup was one of a number of golf treasures stolen from the USGA museum. It has not been recovered.

Nearly 600 golfers applied to enter the 36th United States Amateur Championship. Of these talented ball strikers, 167 quali ed to travel to Baltimore Country Club and compete in the championship at Five Farms— September 12-15, 1932. Only nine

golfers were exempt from the sectional trials: Francis Ouimet, the reigning U.S. Amateur Champion, and the eight members of the British Walker Cup Team.

e nal round (played on Saturday, September 17, 1932) drew more than 15,000 spectators to watch the two competitors le standing (Canadian National Champion, Sandy Ross Somerville and America’s Johnny Goodman) play a dramatic back and forth match. A er the morning round Somerville was one up. In the a ernoon, both Somerville and Goodman played electrifying golf. Somerville took the lead on the 31st (hole #13) and never let go. e match ended on the 17th (35th hole). Sandy Ross Somerville was the rst Canadian to win the U.S. Amateur Championship and the rst nonAmerican to take home the Havemeyer Trophy in twenty-one years. Somerville would be recognized as Canada’s 1932 Athlete of the Year, and in 1950, was voted Canada’s top golfer for the rst half of the 20th Century.

1932

April through October 2024, we will be featuring a trophy from the Major Championships hosted at BCC. is trophy is on display in the Trophy Bar at Five Farms.

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE

Summer is here, and along with it comes the threat of dangerous weather in the form of lightning. Lightning is arbitrary, random, and unpredictable. Five percent of domestic annual lightning deaths and injuries happen on golf courses. The Five Farms campus is equipped with a Total Lightning Detection system, which alerts members, guests, and staff of advancing severe weather. The siren system is automatically activated as the device senses both intracloud and cloud-to-ground lightning at a radius of ten miles from Five Farms. After 15 minutes of inactivity, the system gives the all-clear signal. There are two different, distinctive tones used in this process: one long 15-second horn blast, meaning lightning is detected and to seek shelter. Three short five-second horn blasts indicate it is safe to resume activities. Posters detailing this system are outside the Golf House and in the gentlemen’s and ladies' Locker Room areas. The USGA Rules of Golf (Rule 6-8) allow players to discontinue play if they believe there is a danger from lightning. If you’re at an event where there is no detection system, a good rule is: "If you can see it (lightning), flee it; if you can hear it (thunder), clear it.”

With the return of high heat and humidity to the Mid-Atlantic area, we're entering the dog days of summer. This change in weather brings increased soil temperatures, which naturally reduce the root systems on the cool season playing surfaces,

putting the turf under stress. To keep our courses in top condition, our dedicated staff will apply light applications of water during the hottest parts of the day (10:00am-6:00pm) to ensure the survival of the turf under stress. If you happen to encounter our staff members on the courses while you're playing, please do not hit from the tee or to the green until they are completely out of the way. If a staff member is unaware of your presence, please alert them before playing your shot. The safety of our staff is, and should be, of utmost importance.

We appreciate your patience, courtesy, and consideration for our staff at all times.

SYCAMORE ANTHRACNOSE: Then & Now

Back in May, you might have noticed that Sycamores all around the Baltimore area looked like they had taken a sudden turn for the worse, just as their neighboring trees were starting to look really full and lush. This temporary defoliation is caused by Sycamore Anthracnose, a fungal infection that favors spring's cool, wet weather. It is typical to see some symptoms every year. With unseasonably warm temperatures in March, prolonged cool weather in April, and late frosts in May, weather like this past spring exacerbated the situation. Though the symptoms are severe and can include shoot dieback, branch cankers, and necrotic spots on leaves, the disease rarely affects the long-term health of otherwise healthy, mature trees. For this reason, though the trees are temporarily unsightly, we do not feel it is worth investing in the available preventative fungicide treatments. Most years, the damage has not been as drastic as it was this year. Even so, as temperatures warmed in June and rains abated, new leaves emerged to replace those that were lost. Looking around the courses now, the trees show almost no sign of what occurred just a few short months ago.
