Congratulations to our members who have recently tied the knot! Just a quick reminder; in line with Club Bylaws, members who get married are asked to propose their spouse for membership. We also require that you share your wedding date with us so we can keep our records up to date.
Section 1. New Proposals - As of February 2006, any member who remarries following death or divorce must inform the Director of Membership of the marriage and the date it took place. The member’s spouse must apply for membership in the Club within two years of the marriage. Provided, however, that if the member is younger than 28 years of age at the time of marriage, such new spouse’s membership proposal may be deferred for three years from the date of the marriage. If the spouse is invited into membership, payment of the initiation fee at the time of the invitation is required. There is no maximum threshold in place to pay future initiation fees for possible future marriages.
If you have any questions or need help with the process, please feel free to reach out to our Director of Membership Casey Schell at cschell@bcc1898.com or 410.554.8004.
On behalf of the Archive Committee of the Baltimore Country Club, I would like to extend gratitude for Tim Kennelly's generous donation of the texts on A.W. Tillinghast. As we are coming up on the 100 year anniversary of the completion of the venerable East Course, the volumes that Tim donated on Tillinghast are especially coveted.
We very much appreciate all that he has done and continue to do for Baltimore Country Club.
Appreciatively, Dr. Bob Grill
Archive Committee Chair
ISwim2Live’s infant and toddler swimming classes are designed to teach your little ones essential lifesaving skills in a fun, supportive, and loving environment. What sets ISwim2Live apart from traditional swim lessons is not just what your child learns, but how they learn it— always with safety as the top priority.
Master Instructor Teresa Coletti-Iacono is has been teaching survival swim lessons for nearly 20 years, and her passion for it has never faded. Helping children build water confidence and life-saving skills is deeply rewarding for her. Every lesson is an opportunity to make a difference, and she truly loves what she does.
In this program, your child will learn essential survival skills— such as floating on their back and swimming with their face in the water—while having fun! This playful approach builds comfort in the water, encourages safety, and gives parents peace of mind.

I had been working out with Janine for years before she took a leave of absence due to having hip replacement surgery and related R&R. Prior to her surgery, she hired Golf Fitness Specialist Dezmon Gray, and introduced me to him. Knowing what my goals were, Janine encouraged me to transition my training over to Dezmon for my regular workouts.
Dezmon is not only a knowledgeable and experienced fitness professional but also has a broad familiarity with the game of golf. He has worked as a caddie and personal trainer with tour professionals at TPC Sawgrass, as well as carried a single-digit handicap himself. You can tell he has a real passion for the game.
Dezmon has provided me with a very ‘golf-centric’ workout routine tailored and focused on improving my body to move better so I can swing better. Dezmon has also taken the time to observe my game on the course to see what’s transferring; better yet, he attended one of my lessons with Dave Hutsell. Big “win-win” for my game!
Having lots of room for improvement with both my game and fitness, Dezmon is currently working with me on lower body strength, coordination, and balance. These golf-centric, customized workouts have measurably improved my game.

With summer in full swing, I thought it would be great to share some wonderful news related to our Caddie and Evans Scholar Programs. Over ten years ago, a young lady named Samantha Lannon took a leap of faith and came to BCC as a freshman from Dulaney High School to caddie. She was encouraged by BCC member Steve Colnitis, with the potential opportunity of receiving a full scholarship to college. No promises, but an opportunity that if she persevered, maintained good grades in high school, and carried enough golf bags over those threeplus years, perhaps that dream of becoming an Evans Scholar and receiving that full scholarship would come true. Now, fast forward to May 2025—Samantha Lannon, who attended The Ohio State University as an Evans Scholar and graduated in 2021, has earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Virginia Tech. On the next page is a letter from Samantha that she wanted to share with the membership. We hope you enjoy it and feel the same joy in knowing that the support our membership shows to our youth caddies, past, present, and future, has changed and can change many lives, especially for this young lady from Baltimore County.
In addition to Samantha graduating this past May, we had our second and third Evans Scholars from Baltimore Country Club, Varada Maulkhan and Rebecca Lannon (yes, the younger sister of Samantha), graduate with their undergrad degrees from the University of Maryland. Again, the support of our Caddie Program is continuing to grow leaps and bounds because of the support of each of you.
We thank you for making a difference in the lives of our youth, one caddie at a time. Remember, even if you need to take a cart, our youth caddies are trained to forecaddie, and the knowledge you can share with them over the course of 18 holes through conversation does make a difference and goes a long way. That is what is so wonderful about caddying.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Greg Jones Professional Emeritus
Dear Caddie Program and Evans Scholarship supporters,
My name is Samantha Lannon, and I was the first Chick Evans Scholar from Baltimore Country Club. As many of you may remember, I went to The Ohio State University from 2017-2021, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology on a pre-veterinary track. My experience as an Evans Scholar at Ohio State was better than I could’ve ever imagined. While living in the scholarship house, I made amazing friends, and it’s been wonderful seeing how successful we have all become since graduating. The Evans Scholarship really set me on the course to accomplish all of my dreams.
I figured I’d give you all an update on my life since graduating from Ohio State. I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech straight out of college, so I moved to Christiansburg, Virginia, and started the four-year doctorate program in August 2021. It’s been a busy yet rewarding past four years full of studying, clinical rotations, and some golf when I found the free time. Within that time, I also adopted two dogs, named Olive and Marty, and got engaged to the man I had started dating at Ohio State. I have been so blessed by all those who have supported me, and I’m excited to say that I graduated with my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine on May 16, 2025. I was also named valedictorian of my class, which has been a great honor.
Following graduation, my fiancé and I are moving to Mooresville, North Carolina, where I will start as an associate veterinarian
in small animal general practice in Statesville, NC. The owner of the practice where I will be working is a friend of Dr. Rob Goodman, a BCC member whom I was introduced to back in 2017. Dr. Goodman allowed me to shadow his veterinary practice in Baltimore throughout college when I was home on breaks. He played a huge role in preparing me for veterinary school, supporting me throughout school, and providing a recommendation for the practice where I was hired. I am forever grateful to Dr. Goodman, as well as the other supporters of the Caddie Program and the Evans Scholarship Foundation, who helped set my dream in motion many years ago.
Thank you all for your support and for always believing in my future. It’s been wonderful to see the Caddie Program grow at BCC and see many more Evans Scholarship recipients named since my time, including my little sister, Becca. My family is incredibly grateful for your generosity.
If any of you wish to keep in touch, my email is sjlannon7@gmail.com.
Sincerely, Dr. Samantha Lannon
Samantha Lannon and classmate John Kett were named co-valedictorians of Virginia Tech’s College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2025—a first-time honor for the college.

Fixing ball marks and divots on a golf course is important for both competitive fairness and maintaining the quality of the playing surface. Unrepaired ball marks and divots can create uneven surfaces that disrupt putting and make it difficult for other players to hit their shots. By repairing damage, players contribute to a better playing experience for themselves and other golfers, as now is a critical time for divot repair on fairways and tees. Everyone plays an important role in taking care of the Club's courses.
Once a divot is taken, if it is intact and soil remains attached, it will most likely survive when placed back and tamped back in place. Please follow the Golden Rule for Divot Recovery: A divot that is large enough for the golfer to replace should be replaced. Every divot that is not replaced has no chance of survival. The lesser option and least desirable is if the divot is destroyed and can’t be replaced, fill the divot with the seed/soil mix on the carts (including push carts) and tamp down with your foot so the mix is level with the surrounding area. Since summer is the most challenging season to grow grass from seed, divot recovery with the seed can take weeks to months to heal, as evidenced by a study our team completed last season on the East Course fairways:
Golf courses are often judged on the quality of their putting greens because they play such a significant role in the game. The slightest imperfection can cause a ball to veer off its intended line and miss the hole. Our maintenance staff spend a great deal of energy and resources to provide smooth and consistent putting surfaces. Those efforts can quickly be undermined when golfers do not repair ball marks.
The proper technique for repairing ball marks is simple and requires only a few seconds:
1. Identify the Ball Mark: Find the ball mark on the green where the ball has impacted
2. Use a Repair Tool (or any pointed object): A dedicated ball mark repair tool is helpful, but almost any pointed object can be used
3. Insert & Push: Insert the tool behind the ball mark and gently push the top of the tool toward the center
4. Work Around the Ball Mark: Continue pushing the turf around the ball mark toward the center of the indentation
5. Avoid Prying or Lifting: Avoid any prying or lifting motions, as this can damage the turf roots.
6. Smooth & Tamp: Once the turf is pushed in, gently tap the area down with your putter or foot to create a smooth and firm surface

It’s that time of year again. The milkweed has begun to tower over the grass plumes in our native areas, causing some golfers to wonder whether we have grown lazy in our weed control strategies. But in fact, our high grass areas are carefully managed to allow these naturally-occurring stands of Milkweed to proliferate, as they are critical habitat for Monarch butterflies. We still employ annual mowing and targeted weed control strategies to inhibit invasive species like wild raspberry, burn weed, and thistle; but these management practices are carefully adapted to preserve the Milkweed stands while the Monarch life cycle is in progress.
Scientists measure the area of Central Mexico’s forests in which monarch butterflies hibernate each winter, providing a scientific indicator of their population status. Most recent data on the size of over-wintering colonies in estimate that the species occupied about 4.5 acres during the 2024-2025 winter season. A promising uptick, this is an increase of 99% from the winter prior, but still below the average for the last decade.
The amount of breeding habitat available to monarchs here in the northeast has a direct impact on these overwinter numbers, setting a ceiling for the size of the monarch population. Milkweed is the only plant upon which the butterflies will lay their eggs, as it is their only larval food source. Large patches of Milkweed like those at BCC are easier for Monarchs to
locate and create a more abundant and reliable food source for monarch larvae, reducing competition and increasing the likelihood of successful reproduction.
Here at BCC, after years of intentional stewardship, we now have almost three acres of Milkweed meadows across both golf courses. Milkweed also supports other pollinators, as a great nectar resource for a variety of bees and butterflies. When in bloom, it adds a pop of color to our native areas, and a sweet perfume to the air.

The serve is one of the most technically complex strokes in the game of tennis, but it is also the only stroke that you have total control over. It sets up the rest of the point if you execute it well, but it can be a point of discouragement if you don’t feel confident when it’s your turn to serve.
Here are a few tips you can implement next time you’re serving:
Try to keep your tossing arm comfortably straight without bending your wrist or allowing excessive downward or upward motion. Think of it more as a ‘pop’ rather than a toss. Release the ball around eye level and keep your tossing arm up to track the ball in the air. Make sure your weight is slightly forward and balanced when you toss. Ideal toss placement is usually at least above your racquet when it is fully extended above your head and no more than a racquet’s length in front of your front foot.
Ideally, your highest point of contact with the ball is generally the best point of contact. When the ball starts to fall too much, and your hitting arm has to bend a lot to make contact, you lose control and power. Contact should also be comfortably in front of your hitting shoulder. When making contact, your hitting wrist should be relaxed to allow the racquet head to do the work and pronate (‘snap’) through the ball.
After making contact with the ball, continue accelerating through the swing until the racquet head falls to the opposite side of your body—almost like placing a sword into your belt. If you are able to stop your racquet head before it reaches the other side of your body, you’ve likely decelerated during the swing. The motion should feel fluid, not forced, and your body’s momentum should naturally carry you forward toward your target.
Finishing your serve in a balanced position inside the baseline is a good indication that you maintained balance through contact. On the other hand, if you finish off to one side, falling backward, or off-balance, it’s likely you were unbalanced during the serve. If your toss is in the correct place and your momentum is moving towards your target, you will be balanced through the serve and have control. Wrapping your tossing arm around your waist after contact like a seatbelt also helps stabilize your body.
David was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico, where he began playing tennis at age four. He quickly fell in love with the sport and started competing when he was nine years old. Now 21 years old, David has been part of the BCC Racquets Team for the past three years. He began as an intern and is now the Racquets Operations Coordinator.
David holds certifications from PTR, PPTR, PPR, and US Squash, and is currently pursuing his RSPA professional certification. David enjoys traveling and is always looking to bring a smile to those around him—both on and off the court.
