From the Editor What Fear Do You Need To Conquer? For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

You cannot tell from this picture but I was beyond terrified at this moment! I was onstage at the 2013 Toastmasters International Convention in Cincinnati Ohio, this past summer. I was asked to showcase my submission to the first Toastmasters book, Heart of A Toastmaster. There were over 700 people in the room and I was the first of 15 speakers. I joined Toastmasters, the world’s leading public speaking and leadership training organization, in 2010 to get over my fear of public speaking. Being an introvert and rather shy, my only goal was not to pass out in front of 10 people: Never in my wildest imagination was 700 at an International Convention even a possibility. Nevertheless, God had other plans. Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6

Eleanor Roosevelt wrote in You Learn By Living, "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do." So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Isaiah 41:13

I have to admit I am feeling pretty fearless right now. This experience and picture of it is quite an affirming effect on me. Whenever I feel fear now, I pull out my 8 X 10 and remember how I felt at this moment and realize I survived it and I am definitely stronger for it. Watch out Dayton and the world. ‘You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!’ Here I come! What fear do you need to conquer? When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me? Psalm 56:3-4 "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:27 Giving God all the Glory

MT. ENON’S VISION STATEMENT The vision of Mount Enon Missionary Baptist Church is to: EXALT the Lord through worship, EVANGELIZE the Lost through relationships, EDIFY, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the Laity through discipleship and to ENCOURAGE the Laborers through fellowship. Because we are a striving congregation in Dayton, Ohio, which has been called and commissioned to become a group of believers in whom the Lord will be well pleased by developing each member as true disciples of Jesus Christ: We will LOVE the Lord according to Deuteronomy 30:15-16 We will LEARN the Word according to Deuteronomy 17:18-20 We will LIVE the Word according to Joshua 1:8 and We will LEAD the World through the Word according to Acts 1:8 We are challenged today, to get involved, and take responsibility, and we must understand that we are ambassadors of Christ and of Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church. We decree and order that all Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church would experience a greater move of God in their lives because they submit to live by God’s biblical order to win Lives to Christ.

“God can do anything, you know-far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” (Ephesians 3:20) -Pastor Cory Pruitt

The “Young Adult” Voice Young Adult Life in 2013 By: Garrett M. Carter, M.Ed. Middle School Teacher and Author At first glance, one might think that living as a young adult today is extremely different than living as a young adult 50 years ago. In many ways this is true; there have been several social and technological advances that have paved the way for a great deal of change. What is not so different is the fact that many young adults today face similar temptations, experiences, and decisions as those who came before them. Something else that hasn’t changed from generation to generation is God’s presence and love. The purpose of this article is to briefly highlight political issues and temptations that young adults are faced with, and also to urge the church to provide spiritual guidance on these issues so that Mt. Enon Young Adults can go down God’s path. Let’s start with issues on the political landscape. Today’s controversial topics include abortion, same-sex marriage, immigration, and the list goes on. As young adults, we need to know more about the church’s current position on these issues. It is important for the church to confront these issues directly in order to provide members with relevant doctrines and guidance on these issues. The Young Adult Ministry held its first “Hot Topics” session earlier this year and plans to hold more. These are important conversations to have as these issues continue to stay at the forefront of American politics. Next, let’s look at today’s temptations; they are every place you look. In fact, you don’t have to look at all and they will still find you! Today’s young adults and even teens are faced with decisions on drugs, sex, alcohol, peer pressure, violence, etc. Again, it is important for the church to confront these issues directly. If teens and young adults don’t receive information and spiritual guidance from the church on these issues, they may receive bad information and, as a result, make poor decisions that have life-long consequences. While the church may not want to alienate members by taking a position or confronting such issues, the church as a whole has a responsibility to help each other. Some of the statistics within the community, within the church, warrant these conversations. Ministers, elders, and adults -- we need your advice and guidance! Share your testimonies and experiences with us so that we can make informed decisions based on His word. Young adults, teens, and children -- when we receive advice and guidance from our elders we must LISTEN to them and PRAY to our Lord and Savior! In closing, we must always remember the word of God. Proverbs 3:6 instructs us, “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” Young adults, we must remember to seek Him always! To our elders, we may not ask or thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us, but we do appreciate it and seek more of it. Sometimes, we even listen. The mission of the Mt. Enon Young Adult Ministry is to draw, educate, and empower other young adults to become committed and passionate servants of the kingdom of God through ongoing fellowship and spiritual development. Young Adults, stay tuned about upcoming events through the church bulletin and Facebook page!

Prayer Line That we should pray goes without saying. The bible tells us that we "ought always pray”. But it’s one thing to say it and another to see it in action. Our pastor had a vision of a congregation in prayer, not just on Sundays or Wednesday prayer meetings, but every day. It was new; it was different…none of us were sure how it was going to work. We had some hiccups. Technology was not always our friend, but as we kept at it, we found our niche. We found our groove. And we found God on the line—and each other. This time together, each day at 7 a.m. and each evening at 9 p.m. has become the spiritual glue that bonds many of us each together. As you get on the line, you often hear people introducing themselves to each other, getting to know each other and sharing their concerns. And it’s not just Mt. Enon. Social media has spread the word about the prayer line all over the country. And people are calling in---from Texas, from Alabama, from Tennessee, desiring to share time with us, to hear an encouraging word, to lay their requests before God and know that we will continue to pray for God to cover them in every area of their lives. And the testimonies are coming…sick bodies being healed, relationships being repaired, financial crises being resolved—all because we pray in faith, all because we believe God, all because our biggest prayer is to be in alignment with His will. You know, my car needs a front end alignment. I can tell, because it pulls to the left when it should be going straight; sometimes the steering wheel vibrates and the tread on my tires is wearing unevenly. How many of our lives are like that? Prayer is our front end alignment. It pulls our lives back in order; makes us go straight, keeps our lives balanced and helps us to weather the storms without the storms wearing us out. You don’t have to get on every day. You don’t even have to say anything. But we encourage you to get on the line. We encourage you to get in the boat with us. To

start and end every day in prayer. We’ve seen the difference it makes in others and I’ve seen the difference it makes—in me! After a social hour which included dinner, (thanks to Sis. Schatan Reed, Syretta Cunningham, Brenda Turner and Jacinta Turner for their hospitality.) several dozen members and friends got down to business. The women were led by Pastors’ Pruitt and Settle Townsend, the men by Sis. Elaine Owens and Sheila Rountree. I can only speak for the women’s session, but I will tell you if you missed it you missed it! Sis. Daria Dillard Stone set it off early for the night, throwing down the gauntlet and allowing other women to open up and do the same. What’s happened in 411/412 stays in 411/412, but we got real! Later nearly all of the participants joined in on the line dance instruction in the Gym. Special thanks to Deacon Grubbs for keeping the place open for us. I am sure the Pastors’ were there just to keep an eye on us! ;0. On behalf of Rhonda Mundy and the rest of the Singles Ministry we would like to thank all who came out with us, shared and prayed, especially our Pastor for spending time with us. Stay tuned for more Singles events in the future and come and join us. All are welcomed. -Andrea Foy Thanksgiving Prayer For each new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night, For health and food, For love and friends, For everything Thy goodness sends. Establishment of the Black Church Part IV or IV

AFRICAN AMERICAN RELIGION JARENA LEE, THE FIRST BLACK WOMAN TO PREACH THE GOSPEL Between four or five years after my sanctification, on a certain time, an impressive silence fell upon me, and I stood as if someone was about to speak to me, yet I had no such thought in my heart. In my utter surprise there seemed to sound a voice which I thought I distinctly heard, and most certainly understood, which said to me, “Go preach the Gospel!” “No one would believe me,” I replied. Again I listened, and again the same voice seemed to say, “Preach the Gospel; I will put words in your mouth, and will turn your enemies to become your friend (Digital Schomburg, African American Women Writers). In 1819, in an age when women were prohibited by social and religious customs from preaching, Jarena Lee became the first woman authorized to preach by Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Although he first denied her request, Bishop Allen was so moved by Lee’s spontaneous exhortations during a visiting minister’s sermon that he “rose up in the assembly, and related that she had called on him eight years before, asking to be permitted to preach, and he had put her off; but that now he believed that she was called to that work, as any of the preachers present” (pbs.org, Jarena Lee).

Jarena Lee believed she has been called to preach. “O how careful ought we to be, least through our by-laws of church government and discipline, we bring into disrepute even the word of life. For as unseemly as it may appear now-a-days for a woman to preach, it should be remembered that nothing is impossible, with God. And why should it be thought impossible, heterodox, or improper for a woman to preach? The Savior died for the woman as well as for the man (Digital Schomburg). Despite Allen’s blessing, Lee continued to face hostility to her ministry because she was “black” and a “woman.” Despite her problems, in the nineteenth century, she became a traveling minister, traveling thousands of miles on foot. In one year alone, she travelled two thousand three hundred and twenty-five miles, and preached one hundred and seventy-eight sermons” (pbs.org, Jarena Lee). Thanksgiving Blessing O God, We thank you for this earth, our home; for the wide sky and the blessed sun, for the ocean and streams, for the towering hills and the whispering wind, for the trees and green grass. We thank you for our senses by which we hear the songs of birds, and see the splendor of fields of golden wheat, and taste autumn's fruit, rejoice in the feel of snow, and smell the breath of spring flowers. Grant us a heart opened wide to all this beauty; and save us from being so blind that we pass unseeing when even the common thornbush is aflame with your glory. For each new dawn is filled with infinite possibilities for new beginnings and new discoveries. Life is constantly changing and renewing itself. In this new day of new beginnings with God, all things are possible. We are restored and renewed in a joyous awakening to the wonder that our lives are and, yet, can be. Amen.

Healthier Green Bean Casserole Green bean casserole has a pedigree. It was invented by Campbell Soup Company in 1955 to prompt happy housewives to buy more cream of mushroom soup; it’s a piece of American marketing history. A culinary icon, but one, like many from its era, that falls squarely in our makeover sweet-spot.

Ingredients  3 tablespoons canola oil, divided  1 medium sweet onion, (half diced, half thinly sliced), divided  8 ounces mushrooms, chopped  1 tablespoon onion powder  1 1/4 teaspoons salt, divided  1/2 teaspoon dried thyme  1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper  2/3 cup all-purpose flour, divided  1 cup low-fat milk  3 tablespoons dry sherry, (see Ingredient Note)  1 pound frozen French-cut green beans, (about 4 cups)  1/3 cup reduced-fat sour cream  3 tablespoons buttermilk powder, (see Ingredient Note)  1 teaspoon paprika  1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Coat a 2 1/2-quart baking dish with cooking spray. 2. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook, stirring often, until softened and slightly translucent, about 4 minutes. Stir in mushrooms, onion powder, 1 teaspoon salt, thyme and pepper. Cook, stirring often, until the mushroom juices are almost evaporated, 3 to 5 minutes. Sprinkle 1/3 cup flour over the vegetables; stir to coat. Add milk and sherry and bring to a simmer, stirring often. Stir in green beans and return to a simmer. Cook, stirring, until heated through, about 1 minute. Stir in sour cream and buttermilk powder. Transfer to the prepared baking dish. 3. Whisk the remaining 1/3 cup flour, paprika, garlic powder and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt in a shallow dish. Add sliced onion; toss to coat. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons oil in a large nonstick skillet

over medium-high heat. Add the onion along with any remaining flour mixture and cook, turning once or twice, until golden and crispy, 4 to 5 minutes. Spread the onion topping over the casserole. 4. Bake the casserole until bubbling, about 15 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Tips & Notes  Ingredient notes:  Don't use the high-sodium “cooking sherry” sold in many supermarkets. Instead, purchase dry sherry sold with other fortified wines.  Look for buttermilk powder, such as Saco Buttermilk Blend, in the baking section or with the powdered milk in most supermarkets. FRUITCAKE (You Know You Love It!) Generally, fruitcake is a mixture of fruits and nuts with just enough batter to hold them together. When wrapped in cloth and foil, saturated with alcoholic liquors regularly, and kept in in tightly closed tins, a fruitcake may be kept for months or even years. Have It Your Way... If there are certain fruits you don't like, you can always include more of another, or some of your own favorites. Dried fruits cooked in juice can take the place of candied fruits, and seeds can replace nuts. To convert a favorite "dark" fruitcake recipe to a "light" fruitcake, leave out the dark spices, use light colored fruits (golden raisins, dried apricots, etc.), and replace dark corn syrup or molasses with light corn syrup.

Southern Fruitcake Recipe By Diana Rattray

Ingredients:                    

1 cup diced candied orange peel 1 cup diced candied lemon peel 2 cups diced citron 1 cup currants 1 cups raisins, chopped 1 cup chopped dates 1/2 cup dry red wine 1/2 cup brandy 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 1/2 teaspoons ground or freshly grated nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon ground mace 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup plus 5 tablespoons butter, room temperature 2 cups firmly packed light brown sugar 5 large eggs, separated 1/2 cup molasses

Preparation: Mix the fruit in a large bowl with the red wine and brandy. Stir to combine and set aside to marinate for 2 to 4 hours.

Butter two 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pans and line them with clean parchment paper. Butter the paper. Sift the flour with the spices twice. Add the baking powder and salt and sift again. Put the butter into a large mixing bowl and cream until smooth. Add sugar; using an electric mixer, cream until light and fluffy. Beat the egg yolks slightly and then add them to the bowl. Mix the batter well before you start to add the flour-spice mixture. Stir the batter as you add the flour, a little at a time, stirring well after each addition. When the flour is thoroughly incorporated, add the molasses and stir. Finally, stir in the fruit, along with any soaking liquid left in the bowl. Put the egg whites in a stainless steel or glass bowl and beat with a clean beater to stiff peaks. Fold them into the batter thoroughly and then spoon the batter into the prepared pans. Cover loosely with a clean cloth and let the batter sit overnight in a cool place to mellow. On the next day, heat the oven to 250°. Place the fruitcake on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 3 1/2 to 4 hours. After 1 1/2 hours, cover the pan with a piece of brown paper (do not use foil) or set the pan in a paper bag and return it to the oven. When the cake has baked for 3 1/2 hours, test the with a toothpick or cake tester. If the tester comes out of the center of the cake clean, the cake is done. Leave the cake in the pan and set on wire rack to cool. When the cakes are completely cooled, turn out of the pans, leaving the brown-paper lining on the cake. Wrap the cake with parchment, then foil, and pack the cake in a tin. Homemade fruitcakes need air, so punch a few holes in the lid of the tin or set the cover loosely on the tin. Set the tin in a cool, undisturbed place, and every two before Christmas, open the foil and sprinkle the cake with a small glassful of brandy, wine, or bourbon. The liquor will keep the cake moist and flavorful and help preserve it as well.

Veteran’s Day Salute

Mt Enon's Veterans Service on Sunday November 10th was emotional and inspiring. Member Vincent Givens, saluted the many Veterans in our church and they played the military fight songs recognizing each branch of service followed by Taps; which was hard for me because the last time I heard it was at my Dad's funeral. My father, Alonza Foy, served in the Air Force from 1962-1987. He is a Vietnam War Vet. Thanks Mount Enon Missionary Baptist Church for the great salute to those who help keep us safe!

Why Did God Make Me Black? Why did God make me black, Lord… Lord why did You make me black? Why did You make someone the world would hold back? Black is the color of dirty clothes, of grimy hands and feet… Black is the color of darkness, of tired beaten streets… Why did You give me thick lips, a broad nose and kinky hair? Why did You create someone who receives the hated stare? Black is the cover of bruised eye when someone gets hurt… Black is the color of darkness, black as the color of dirt. Why is my bone structure so thick, my hips and cheek so high? Why are my eyes brown, and not the color of the sky? Why do people think I’m useless? How come I feel so used? Why do people see my skin and think that I should be abused. Lord I just don’t understand what is it about my skin? Why is it some people want to hate me and not know the person within? Black is what people are ‘labeled’ when others want to keep them away. Black is the color shadows cast… Black is the end of the day Lord You know my own people mistreat me, and you know this just ain’t right… They don’t like my hair; they don’t like my skin, as they say I’m too dark or too light! Lord don’t You think it’s time to make a change why don’t You redo creation to make everyone the same?

God’s reply: Why did I make you black? Why did I make you black? I made you the color of coal from which beautiful diamonds are formed… I made you the color of oil, the black gold which keeps people warm. Your color is the same as the rich dark soil that grows the food you need… Your color is the same as the black stallion and panther, oh what majestic creatures indeed! All colors of the heavenly rainbow can be found throughout every nation… When all these colors are blended, you become my greatest creation. Your hair is the texture of lamb’s wool, such a beautiful creature as he… I am the shepherd who watches them, I will always watch over thee! You are the color of midnight sky; I put star glitter in your eyes There’s a beautiful smile but hidden behind your pain. That’s why your cheeks are so high! You are the color of dark clouds from the hurricanes I make in September. I made your lips so full and thick, so when you kiss… they will remember! Your stature is strong, your bone structure thick to withstand the burden of time… The reflection you see in the mirror, that image that looks back… That is MINE! So get off your knees, look in the mirror and tell me what you see I didn’t make you in the image of darkness I made you in the image of ME! Author unknown – Sis. Minnie Alexander
