MT. ENON’S MOTTO, MISSION, AND VISION STATEMENT MOTTO Our motto is "Because We Care, We Share". We share our love, resources, and faith with all. We are a Christian family and invite all to become children of God in the fullest way by receiving the teachings and gift of salvation. MISSION Our Mission is to maintain the general design of the Church as outlined in the New Testament of the Holy Bible. To extol and magnify Christ and His teachings: To promote the spiritual and moral welfare of its members. To advance the Christian faith and religion: To enforce good order: To aid the needy and suffering within the sphere of its influence both within the congregation and community. The vision of Mount Enon Missionary Baptist Church is to: EXALT the Lord through worship, EVANGELIZE the Lost through relationships, EDIFY, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the Laity through discipleship and to ENCOURAGE the Laborers through fellowship. Because we are a striving congregation in Dayton, Ohio, which has been called and commissioned to become a group of believers in whom the Lord will be well pleased by developing each member as true disciples of Jesus Christ: We will LOVE the Lord according to Deuteronomy 30:15-16 We will LEARN the Word according to Deuteronomy 17:18-20 We will LIVE the Word according to Joshua 1:8 and We will LEAD the World through the Word according to Acts 1:8 We are challenged today, to get involved, and take responsibility, and we must understand that we are ambassadors of Christ and of Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church. We decree and order that all Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church would experience a greater move of God in their lives because they submit to live by God’s biblical order to win Lives to Christ. “God can do anything, you know-far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” (Ephesians 3:20) -Pastor Cory Pruitt

THE VOICE 2.0 is back! We went on hiatus when the the church shut down and now we are back. Each monthly digital edition is available on www.issuu.com/MEMBC, around the first of the month as well as on the board in the FLC, Facebook and soon the website!! We invite members to contribute as always! All contributions are due by the 20th of the month and are subjected to approval. Articles, comments and suggestions are welcomed at info@andreafoy.com. In this issue, we start with all of a year in review, a snapshot of what the church was doing even though we weren’t physically there: Food giveaways, Covid testing, Covid vaccines. Pastor took part in several Zooms on our Facebook page about what was going on in the community, the Staff started sending letters to the membership to keep us informed about church happenings. We received inspirational calls from the Pastor that seemed to come just at the right time. Speaking of Covid, we made news that reached all the way to the Governor’s office by partnering with Ziks Pharmacy in Wright-Dunbar. Mayoral candidate, Jeffrey Mims got his first vaccination on camera at Mt. Enon. I am reminded of our beloved church mother, Annie Stewart, who was interviewed by WDTN in 2015 when we received our Historical Marker from the State. She said Mt. Enon has been a ‘beacon on the hill’ for a long time. She was right then and now! All this and so much more! Please read and share with a friend.

Commissioner Mims Receives COVID Vaccine, Hopes To Set Positive Example For The Community. DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Zik’s Family Pharmacy held a vaccine clinic at Mt. Enon Church Wednesday morning to serve residents in the heart of Dayton, and City Commissioner Jeff Mims was among the first to get the shot. The commissioner, who has spent more than 40 years serving the community, said he was more than happy to take the vaccine as soon as he became eligible, after experiencing the devastation of COVID-19 in his personal life. “The reason why I’m happy to be able to take [this vaccine], of course, is unfortunately, my mother passed from the virus this past August. [Secondly] I’m at a high-risk age group, and it puts me in a position to help protect myself so that [can] help protect others.” Part of helping others, he said, is setting a tone that shows the dedication of elected officials to prioritize the health of their constituents. “Being a community leader, being a member of the Dayton City Commission, it also underscores how important we think this is for the future vitality and livelihood of our community. Because people look to us to lead them in the right direction.” Among those looking for answers are some members of the Black community, many of whom harbor mixed feeling about the shot and vaccines in general. Mims said he hopes his confidence in the vaccine will help set a positive tone for people of color who’ve been disproportionately affected by the virus. “It’s especially critical and challenging at times because there’s a trust factor, based upon the Tuskegee experiment,” he said. “And we all know what happened relative to that. It’s also affected African Americans [when you] look at so many other quality of life factors in terms of jobs, healthcare, housing, banking institutions. So, that puts us in a situation where there is a natural distrust that needs to be addressed.”

across the country.

Mims added, he hopes feelings of doubt in others will slowly start to improve as more people take the vaccine and its effectiveness is felt within the Black community and

“The only way we’re going to be able to curb this disease, as dreadful as it is,” he said, “is for everyone to get the vaccine. And to get us back on the track to be normal.” - Lauren Mixon, Feb 3rd WDTN.TV

Healing in a time of the Coronavirus; A time of pain and suffering. Hymn: Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I am weak, I am tired, I am worn, through the storm, through the night, lead me on in the light, take my hand, precious Lord, Lead me Home. -Thomas Dorsey. As the whole world is reeling from the threat of the coronavirus, and thousands are dying all over the United States and other parts of the world. Doctors and the medical profession race and study to treat those infected and save lives. This has been a time of fear, uncertainty, and great despair as we fear for our health and well-being and our loved ones, close to us and far away. Hymn: On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand. -William Bradbury For Christians, and all faiths, this is a moment we pray for all mankind, regardless of race, religion, or station in life. This coronavirus knows no one, it chooses all. What can we do? We can love each other and pray. -Daniel Darling. Contributor to Christianity Today. Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God has forgiver you. Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love as Christ also loved us, and hath given himself for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savior. This virus COVID-19 creeps through all mand kind, destroying and bring suffering like the world has never known. Families cannot sit with, hug or say goodbye to their loved ones for fear of spreading this vicious virus, or becoming infected, leaving some of their sick loved ones to die alone. As we watch the sobering and painful news daily, all we can do is pray, pray for our public and local officials, coming to us daily, giving us heart breaking news as the death toll mounts daily. We pray for the heroic doctors and medical staff who are risking their lives and families’ lives trying to perform their health care duties in hospitals, all over the world. Lord we ask you to give them the wisdom, medical expertise, courage and strength as they fight this vile sickness and virus. -Darling 2 Tim:7 God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but a spirit of love and of sound mind. This virus has reminded us of our frailty. We have subdued much of the earth with our innovation and creative acts, but we are reminded in this moment, how frail and powerless we are. In his message to people dealing with the Coronavirus, COVID-19. “As we endure this new normal in our lives, we pray earnestly for the heroic medical doctors, nurses, and health care professionals who are putting their lives on the line for their neighbors.” We watch these medical professionals, exhausted and drained, and see the pain on their faces, as they have to at times decides who lives or dies. -Darling John 14: 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. “We must remember that the Bible does not teach us that our lives will be free of problems and sufferings, however, it does promise we will have a comforter, in the form of the Holy spirit to help us through the difficulties of life.” -Tommy Higle. Author of Spiritual Bootcamp: Basic Training for Christians. We pray for the scientists, disease experts, and epidemiologists who are working feverishly on vaccines and testing mechanisms. Lord, we thank you for gifting them with knowledge and wisdom we don’t have. May you give them strength and physical immunity during this time, so they can help push back against this ravaging virus. Daniel Darling. Romans 8: 38-39 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come; nor height, nor dept, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. We pray for the scientists, disease experts, and epidemiologist who are working feverishly on gifting them with knowledge and wisdom we don’t have. We pray that they will have the resources, facemasks, gowns, gloves, needed to save other lives and their lives. As you have instructed us in your world, we earnestly beseech you on behalf of our President, Congress, Governors, Mayors and local officials. We pray you guide them with wisdom and strength and discernment. -Darling Ephesians 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us. 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett is a research fellow and Scientific lead for the Coronavirus Vaccine & Immunopathogenesis Team at the National Institute of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Vaccine Research Center (VRC). She received a B.S. in Biological Sciences, with a secondary major in Sociology, in 2008 from the University of Maryland, where she was a Meyerhoff Scholar and an NIH undergraduate scholar. She then enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she obtained her Ph.D in Microbiology and Immunology in 2014. Appointed to the Vaccine Research Center (VRC), in 2014, she is currently the scientific lead of the Coronavirus Teams, with research efforts aimed at propelling novel coronavirus vaccines, including a COVID-19 vaccine. In December 2020, the Institute’s Director, Dr. Anthony Fauci said: “Kizzy is an African American Scientists who is at the forefront of the development of the vaccine. In February 2021.

Corbett was highlighted in the Time’s “Time100 Next list under the category of Innovators, with a profile written by Dr. Anthony Fauci. In the time’s profile, Dr Fauci wrote that Corbett has been central to the development of the Moderna mRNA vaccine and the Eli Lilly therapeutic monoclonal antibody that were first to enter clinical trials in the U.S.” and that her work will have a substantial impact on ending the worst respiratory-disease pandemic in more than 100 years. When asked about her involvement with the development of the COVID-19 vaccine, Corbett said, “to be living in this moment where I have the opportunity to work on something that has imminent global importance…it’s just a surreal moment for me” Corbet states, she cried when the efficacy showed the mRNA-1273 Moderna vaccine worked. on one after the show. He was still not convinced.

Corbett has worked to rebuild trust with vaccine hesitant populations such as the Black community. For example, she presented education about the COVID-19 vaccine development to Black Health Matters in October 2020. Her race has been a focus of government outreach; after a study released by the NAACP and others revealed that only 14% of black Americans believe a COVID-19 vaccine will be safe, NIAID Director Dr. Fauci was explicit: “the first thing you might want to say to my African American brothers and sisters is that the vaccine that you’re going to be taking was developed by an African American Woman.

The following morning, a news camera found Matthew Mallory and his mother in a Walgreen Pharmacy in Virginia. Just as the Doctor was preparing Matthew for his shot, a camera showed Dr. Corbett rushing into the store to be there with the couple, Matthew and his mother both received the shot and thanked Dr. Corbett for her encouragement and being there for them. They both said Dr. Corbet convinced them to get the shot.

After using her Scientific ability to save a million and a half Americans, Dr. Kizzmekia Corbet was just as committed to convinces one hesitant African American young man and his mother to get their shots. She was determined not to leave anyone behind. May 20th 2021, during a Town Hall meeting, Lawrence O’Donnell introduced people who were reluctant to take the COVID-19 shot to ask their questions about why they were hesitant to Dr. Corbett. Matthew Mallory was one of the participants of the show. He explained to Dr. Corbet his hesitation to take the COVID -19 shot. Dr. Corbett talked to him on the show and made an appeal to him one

When asked what she had learned about people who are hesitant to get the shot, Dr. Corbett replied, ”answer questions, all of them. Listen to people, leave no question unanswered including how easy or difficult is it for you to get the vaccine?”. Early Life and Education. Corbett was born in Hurdle Mills, North Carolina, 1986, to Rhonda Brooks. She grew up in Hillsboro, North Carolina, where she had a large family of step-siblings and foster siblings. Corbet went to Oak Lane Elementary Middle School. Her fourth-grade teacher, Myrtis Bradsher, recalls recognizing Corbett’s talent at an early age and encouraged her mother to place her in advanced classes. I always thought she is going to do something one day. She dotted I’s and crossed t’s. She was the best I had seen in 30 years. - Lois E. Foy

Our own Dr. Mathews has been busy administering vaccinations, interviewing on local TV news shows and appearing on Zoom events this year. She took time to give more Covid information to The Voice 2.0. Take Care of Yourself During Covid-19 Karen M. Mathews, MD, MHA, FAAFP

The COVID-19 pandemic and associated economic crises have affected many individuals’ mental health. During the pandemic, approximately 40% of adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety or depression, representing an increase from the pre-pandemic era. It is also not uncommon for people to acknowledge eating more indiscriminately, exercising less, consuming more alcohol, and finding it more difficult to focus and sleep due to worries about the pandemic. Concerns about job, financial, and relationship security, and what many perceive as continued enforced, antisocial isolation, contribute to overwhelming levels of stress. For many, the outcome is a worsening of chronic diseases or development of a new medical condition. For others, it involves thoughts of self-harm or suicide. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and we can look ahead. Covid-19 vaccines are becoming increasing available, and most states have expanded eligibility to all adults. This forges a wider path of destruction against infection and death due to Covid. It is important to know, however, that mental health consequences of disasters typically exist far beyond the physical impacts. Additionally, increased demand for mental health services is not matched by increased accessibility, especially among the most vulnerable populations, including persons of color. This makes it especially important to understand and practice consistent self-care and to know how and where to seek assistance. The CDC outlines several ways to “take care of you.” 1. Topping the list is a reminder to avoid overload of media stories about the pandemic! It’s good to be informed but seeing, reading, and hearing about it too much can be upsetting and depressing. It is reasonable to limit your exposure to perhaps only twice daily. 2. Definitely make the time to unwind. Actually, scheduling relaxation and recreation on a calendar can increase your probability of attending that virtual yoga class, for example. 3. Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about how you feel. Also be willing to reach out to help others. Authentic conversation is an effective coping strategy to relieve stress and foster resilience. Remember, we are all in this pandemic together. Be sure to check out https://howrightnow.org/talk to see some wonderful suggestions and examples on how to start meaningful conversations. 4. Don’t forget routine screenings and general check-ups. Many people have put this off during the pandemic but this is a good way to keep chronic medical conditions in check and avoid new ones.
