PASTOR'S GREETING Mt Enon family. As you know, many churches, schools, sport's venues, political campaigns, etc. are suspending events until further notice. Here at Mt Enon, we care deeply about your spiritual edification and your physical safety. After much thought and prayer, I do believe, at this time, the Lord is directing us to take our services, and other scheduled events online (Facebook) and via our conference call number. To schedule a meeting, please call the church.

We still are accepting your Tithes, Offerings and donations at scheduled times. Having said that, we are strongly urging everyone to be very cautious about their interactions with one another when here at Mt Enon, and to practice good hygiene (washing your hands, covering your mouth when you cough, etc.) Until such time 'til we meet again.

Recipes from our Cookbook.

Louisiana Shrimp Salad

Leo B. Gilyot, Jr. 1 pound shrimp 3 boiled eggs 1 stalk celery, chopped 1 green onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 3 tablespoons mayonnaise Zatarain’s liquid crab boil salt Tony’s Lemon pepper

Directions: Peel then boil shrimp on the stove or in the microwave with some Zatarain’s liquid crab boil and salt.

Boil, cool and peel eggs. Chop celery, green onion and mince the garlic and place in medium size boil. Remove egg yolks from whites and break them apart with your fingers or a fork into bowl. Chop egg whites. Add to bowl.

When shrimp are cooked and cooled, chop and place in bowl. Add mayo, lemon pepper, salt and Tony’s, mix well.

Check seasonings and add more or add mayo as needed. Cover and refrigerate to let the flavors all meld together. Serve on a bed of lettuce with Roma tomato slices.

Seven Layer Cookie

Jesse “Rev” A. Walker, Jr. 2 packs Graham Crackers (crushed) 1 stick melted butter (or margarine) 1 package Chocolate Chips or White Morsels 1 package Butterscotch Chips 1 small can Eagle Brand Condensed Milk 1 small pack Pecan Halves

Mix crushed graham crackers with melted butter Using a large cake pan (9”x13”), line bottom and sides with cracker mixture pressing with fingers Top with chocolate chips or white morsels evenly throughout pan Add butterscotch chips Pour condensed milk over entire pan Top with pecan chips evenly spaced in rows and columns Bake for 20 minutes in a preheated 425 degree oven or until pecans are browned Let cool before cutting cookie in squares. Serve warm with ice cold milk, DELICIOUS!!!

OUR FATHERS The nation’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. However, it was not until 1972–58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official–that the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the United States. Father’s Day 2020 occurs on Sunday, June 21.

Did you know? There are more than 70 million fathers in the United States.

Origins of Father’s Day The campaign to celebrate the nation’s fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm–perhaps because, as one florist explained, “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.”

On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday.

The next year, a Spokane, Washington, woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on June 19, 1910.

Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day. Today, the day honoring fathers is celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday of June.

In other countries–especially in Europe and Latin America–fathers are honored on St. Joseph’s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19.

In 1972, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday at last. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts.

Our Fathers

This work is part of a collection of poetry, The Poetical Works of William McComb, published in 1864. Born in Belfast, Ireland, McComb became known as the laureate of the Presbyterian Church. A political and religious activist and cartoonist, McComb founded one of Belfast's first Sunday schools. His poem celebrates the lasting legacy of spiritual men of integrity.

Our fathers—where are they, the faithful and wise?

What Is Juneteenth?

The First Juneteenth

“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.” —General Orders, Number 3; Headquarters District of Texas, Galveston, June 19, 1865 When Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued the above order, he had no idea that, in establishing the Union Army’s authority over the people of Texas, he was also establishing the basis for a holiday, “Juneteenth” (“June” plus “nineteenth”), today the most popular annual celebration of emancipation from slavery in the United States. After all, by the time Granger assumed command of the Department of Texas, the Confederate capital in Richmond had fallen; the “Executive” to whom he referred, President Lincoln, was dead; and the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery was well on its way to ratification.

But Granger wasn’t just a few months late. The Emancipation Proclamation itself, ending slavery in the Confederacy (at least on paper), had taken effect two-and-a-half years before, and in the interim, close to 200,000 black men had enlisted in the fight. So, formalities aside, wasn’t it all over, literally, but the shouting?

It would be easy to think so in our world of immediate communication, but as Granger and the 1,800 bluecoats under him soon found out, news traveled slowly in Texas. Whatever Gen. Robert E. Lee had surrendered in Virginia, the Army of the Trans-Mississippi had held out until late May, and even with its formal surrender on June 2, a number of ex-rebels in the region took to bushwhacking and plunder.

That’s not all that plagued the extreme western edge of the former Confederate states. Since the capture of New Orleans in 1862, slave owners in Mississippi, Louisiana and other points east had been migrating to Texas to escape the Union Army’s reach. In a hurried re-enactment of the original Middle Passage, more than 150,000 slaves had made the trek west, according to historian Leon Litwack in his book Been in the Storm So Long: The Aftermath of Slavery. As one former slave he quotes recalled, ” ‘It looked like everybody in the world was going to Texas.’ ”

When Texas fell and Granger dispatched his now famous order No. 3, it wasn’t exactly instant magic for most of the Lone Star State’s 250,000 slaves. On plantations, masters had to decide when and how to announce the news — or wait for a government agent to arrive — and it was not uncommon for them to delay until after the harvest. Even in Galveston city, the ex-Confederate

mayor flouted the Army by forcing the freed people back to work, as historian Elizabeth Hayes Turner details in her comprehensive essay, “Juneteenth: Emancipation and Memory,” in Lone Star Pasts: Memory and History in Texas.

Those who acted on the news did so at their peril. As quoted in Litwack’s book, former slave Susan Merritt recalled, ” ‘You could see lots of niggers hangin’ to trees in Sabine bottom right after freedom, ’cause they cotch ’em swimmin’ ‘cross Sabine River and shoot ’em.’ ” In one extreme case, according to Hayes Turner, a former slave named Katie Darling continued working for her mistress another six years (She ” ‘whip me after the war jist like she did ‘fore,’ ” Darling said).

Hardly the recipe for a celebration — which is what makes the story of Juneteenth all the more remarkable. Defying confusion and delay, terror and violence, the newly “freed” black men and women of Texas, with the aid of the Freedmen’s Bureau (itself delayed from arriving until September 1865), now had a date to rally around. In one of the most inspiring grassroots efforts of the post-Civil War period, they transformed June 19 from a day of unheeded military orders into their own annual rite, “Juneteenth,” beginning one year later in 1866. ” ‘The way it was explained to me,’ ” one heir to the tradition is quoted in Hayes Turner’s essay, ” ‘the 19th of June wasn’t the exact day the Negro was freed. But that’s the day they told them that they was free … And my daddy told me that they whooped and hollered and bored holes in trees with augers and stopped it up with [gun] powder and light and that would be their blast for the celebration.’ ”

This Memorial Day, May 31st, 2019, Dayton, and the State of Ohio celebrated one year from experiencing a violent and devastating tornado, leaving thousands of homes destroyed or damaged. Many are still not back in their homes.

August 3rd, 2019, 24 people died in a mass shooting in Dayton’s Oregon District.

June 2nd, 2020, Dayton is still struggling with the impact of a deadly coronavirus pandemic that started in late January and February, 1,804 have been infected with the coronavirus, and 105,100 people have died from COVID-19. Children are falling ill with an illness linked to COVID-19.

In the State of Ohio, the Pandemic appears to be under control, and the state is currently in the process of reopening businesses, churches, restaurants, and preparing to open schools. The Governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine, is asking people to continue staying at home as much as possible and are encouraging everyone to continue to wear masks and engage in social distancing.

Children are being affected by an illness associated with the Coronavirus. Doctors had told the country that the virus attacked adults, especially the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. A five-year-old boy in New York has become the first child in the United States to die from a condition linked to COVID-19. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said during a briefing Friday that the state department of health is investigating several related cases in children. “This would be harrowing news and would open an entirely different chapter. Cuomo said, “This is an extremely rare and previously unknown presentation of COVID-19 in children, “the Mount Sinai Health System said in a statement, “We send our deepest condolences to the family in the wake of this tragedy.

With all the anxiety, the country is facing with COVID-19. This is the last thing that we need at this time,” Cuomo added, “Now parents have to worry about whether or not their youngsters can be infected.” (Ellen Moynihan and Dave Goldiner.)

As the country is dealing with the fear of COVID-19, and the mounting death toll, the isolation from family members, including losing loved ones without being allowed to say good-bye to them, the loss of jobs and the country is coming close to being in an economic recession, once again, the country and especially the black community is grieving the shocking death of another black man. This time George Floyd died at the hands of 4 white police officers, after he was lying on the ground face down, one officer placed his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck with two officers on his chest as he was pleading for his life, he died in full site of people filming his death and asking the police to help him.

Thousands of people all over the world, including here in Dayton, Ohio are exercising their 1st amendments rights to march and protest the death of George Floyd. Earlier today, June 1, 2020, The brother of George Floyd visited the site of a Minneapolis memorial and calls for protestors to march peacefully.” The death of Mr. Floyd has bought the country together to denounce the actions of police officers involved in the death of black men and women who have not and are not committing a crime. It was just announced today, June 3rd, that the police

department has upgraded the charges of one of the men involved in the death of Mr. Floyd from 3rd degree murder to 2nd degree. Charges of the other three men involved will be announced soon.

I chose this poem because I think the world, since the Pandemic started has struggled with which way to go; stay home, wear the mask, how to protect families and loved ones from COVID-19. Retailers wanting and needing people to come back and make purchases, while still wanting people to be safe, churches wanting to open up and welcome their parishioners to hug and shake hands again, while all the time wanting people to be safe, and stay home if needed.
