Enon Missionary Baptist Church. We decree and order that all Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church would experience a greater move of God in their lives because they submit to live by God’s biblical order to win Lives to Christ.

Scouts BSA It has been reported that 78,000 people in Montgomery County live in what is called a “food desert.” What’s a food desert? An urban area in which it’s difficult to buy affordable or good quality fresh food. There’re not quality grocery stores near our church where fresh produce is sold. Pack & Troop 75 will be involved in our annual “Scouting for Food,” the entire month of March. We will have a large box in the Family Life Center that you can place nonperishable food items in. These items will be donated to the food pantry in our church to assist families with food insecurities in our community. We will also be going doorto-door and dropping off a door hanger with a bag on March 9th and collect the food items on the 16th. If you would like to take part in this food drive, please contact us to get some door hangers for your neighborhood. Our Scouts has been busy with the following activities; Scouting Sunday, Pinewood Derby, Blue and Gold Banquet and scouting meetings. Future activities included the following: Scouting for food, Webelos crossover, Professional Bull Riding event (16th and horseback riding (30th). For information about the horseback riding contact Scoutmaster @ 75scoutmaster@gmail.com. Do you know a kid that you think would make a great SCOUT??? We invite you to come join our Pack/Troop at this historical church. And they don't have to be a member of our church to join our scouting program. If you have any questions, please contact our Charter Organization Representative James Ditto jmsditto@aol.com Scoutmaster Keith Johnson’s special remark for the members of Mt Enon. "I would like to communicate our thanks to the congregation for their contribution given to Troop 75 during Scouting Sunday last month". In late March, the number of scouts in Pack 75 will decrease and increase in Troop 75. The reason for this is Cub Scouts' Webelos will advance to Scouts BSA. This is an exciting time for us and the parents of these scouts. If you would like to see this crossover ceremony it will take place at Cricket Hollow Monday March 25th @5:30. 9

Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things.

Proverbs 14:1 ESV

Proverbs 31:10-31 ESV

The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.

An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. ...

An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.

1 Corinthians 14:34-35 ESV Proverbs 31:1-31 ESV The women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. Colossians 3:18 ESV Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him: What are you doing, my son? What are you doing, son of my womb? What are you doing, son of my vows? Do not give your strength to women, your ways to those who destroy kings. It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink, lest they drink and forget what has been decreed and pervert the rights of all the afflicted. ... Galatians 3:28 ESV

Proverbs 31:30-31 ESV Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.

1 Corinthians 11:3 ESV Proverbs 21:19 ESV But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.

Psalm 46:5 ESV God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. Luke 8:1-3 ESV Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. 1 Peter 3:1-6 ESV Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Ephesians 5:22-23 ESV

Titus 2:1 ESV

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.

But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.

Acts 18:24-26 ESV Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 1 Peter 3:7 ESV Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. 1 Peter 2:13-17 ESV Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. 1 Timothy 2:9 ESV Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, Ephesians 5:22 ESV Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. Proverbs 31:20 ESV She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.

Ephesians 5:1-33 ESV

But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. ... Genesis 21:12 ESV

1 Peter 3:15 ESV

1 Chronicles 16:11 ESV Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually! Luke 23:49 ESV And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.

But God said to Abraham, “Be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. ...

Judges 4:4-5 ESV Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the people of Israel came up to her for judgment. 1 Timothy 5:1-2 ESV

Proverbs 6:20 ESV My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching.

Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

1 Corinthians 11:8-9 ESV

Acts 21:7-9 ESV

For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.

When we had finished the voyage from Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais, and we greeted the brothers and stayed with them for one day. On the next day we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. He had four unmarried daughters, who prophesied.

Genesis 5:1-2 ESV This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created. Mark 15:40-41 ESV There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. Proverbs 31:3 ESV Acts 16:14 ESV Do not give your strength to women, your ways to those who destroy kings. 1 Corinthians 14:22-24 ESV Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers. If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds? But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 1 Peter 3:1-22 ESV Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. John 3:16-17 ESV “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Romans 16:1-2 ESV I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae, that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well. Exodus 20:12 ESV “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. 1 Peter 3:1-7 ESV Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you 20

wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, ... Ephesians 4:11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, Ephesians 3:10 ESV So that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. Titus 2:3 ESV Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 1 Peter 3:4 ESV But let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.

1 Timothy 2:11-14 ESV Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Acts 2:17-18 ESV “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. Colossians 3:19 ESV Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Deuteronomy 22:5 ESV “A woman shall not wear a man's garment, nor shall a man put on a woman's cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.

From the Editor Book Excerpt – The Black Female Leader – Andrea Foy SHEROES My Top Black Female Leadership Examples My Hidden Figures As Black women, many of us have these ‘hidden figures’ in our lives, black women who lead families, neighborhoods, churches, schools, who were unknown. I have the DNA and ancestry of some compelling leaders that no one had heard of and I choose to honor them now. My black female leadership example starts with the Hall’s sisters: Gladys, Hattie, Sally, and Jeanette, my maternal grandmother and great aunts. They have provided all the leadership guidance I need to be a great leader myself. I did not know much about the incredible legacy of my maternal ancestors until my grandmother passed in 2008. One of the biggest compliments I received at her funeral was when a friend of the family from New York said she could tell I was ‘related to them’ because I looked and carried myself just like they did when they were my age. This woman didn’t even know me and had never seen me before but came up to me after the service to talk to me. I decided then and there that I needed to find out who these women were and make sure I did live up to their legacy. My grandmother was instrumental in my life, but I only saw my great aunts once a year after they were retired. Even then, I regret I did not sit at their knee and ask how they accomplished what they did. I do have an entrepreneur streak and desire in me, that was mostly developed my father’s business and learning about my maternal grandfather, so I was ecstatic to learn about my sheroes; the Hall sisters. Gladys Hall McKoy and my grandfather Charlie McKoy had nine children. My grandfather owned 100 acres of farmland in rural North Carolina. Gladys was a housewife all of her life, she ran the household, raised her children and was active in her church. She helped raise her many grandchildren and kept us in line. Her family was her priority and passion. While my grandmother loved being a mom, grandma, and farmer’s wife, her three younger sisters; Sally, Hattie, and Jeanette had other plans. They left their small town rural roots and moved to Harlem. Little did they know, as they left as young women in their early 20s to find their place in the world and a better life, they would become the successful leaders that they did. It is important to look at the history of The Harlem Renaissance to understand how my aunts were able to live the life they did and retire rich enough to move ‘back home’ and live comfortably for the rest of their lives. What follows comes from the History.com/Harlem Renaissance page. The Harlem Renaissance was the development of the Harlem neighborhood in New York City as a black cultural mecca in the early 20th Century and the subsequent social and artistic explosion that resulted. Lasting roughly from the 1910s through the mid-1930s, the period is considered a golden age in African American culture, manifesting in literature, music, stage performance and art. During the time, it was known as the "New Negro Movement," named after the 22

1925 anthology by Alain Locke. (History.com) My aunts heard about the job and living opportunities and were able to move to Harlem towards the end of the movement. They were not artists but became beauticians and landlords due to the opportunities the era created. In 1915 and 1916, natural disasters in the south put black workers and sharecroppers out of work. Additionally, during and after World War I, immigration to the United States fell, and northern recruiters headed south to entice black workers to their companies. From 1910 to 1920, African American populations migrated in large numbers from the South to the North. By 1920, some 300,000 African Americans from the South had moved north, and Harlem was one of the most popular destinations for these families. The northern Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem was meant to be an upper-class white neighborhood in the 1880s, but rapid overdevelopment led to empty buildings and desperate landlords seeking to fill them. (History.com) Upon arriving in Harlem, the Hall sisters first secured jobs in the famous garment district in Manhattan. The Garment District, also known as the Garment Center, the Fashion District, or the Fashion Center, is a neighborhood located in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. The dense concentration of fashion-related uses gives the neighborhood its name. (The Garment District.com) The sisters lived together and pooled their money for years. Eventually, they purchased own their beauty salon and worked both there and the garment district jobs. Years later, they made enough money to purchase a small apartment building where they lived and become landlords. Instead of renting out to the local community, these women rented to their relatives and friends and people that they knew from North Carolina. Many came to New York City to rent from my aunts, to find jobs and make a better life for themselves. Be they relatives, friends, school associates, church associates, enough people went up there and stayed up there over the course of some 30 years so that my aunts were able to make a very good living as entrepreneurs and landlords. My great aunts, Hattie, Sally, and Jeanette, never talked much about their experiences and successes in New York. Most of what the family knows about them came from friends and family that either moved or visited New York while they were there. There were pictures of them wearing floor-length furs and pearls, in heels, and A-line dresses that you would see in any pictures of the Harlem Renaissance, my aunts were exactly like that. They could have been on the cover of Sepia or any other magazine at the time. They had stories of meeting and seeing the major celebrities of the era, but never seemed phased or star struck when talking about the encounters. C’est la vie! My family did not forget their roots. They visited North Carolina often; they also took care of their nieces and nephews very well. My mother Lois Foy, who contributed to this chapter and her sibling's received dresses and shoes, jewelry, and ribbons for their hair from the Garment District. They were certainly some of the bestdressed kids at church each Sunday for they were not allowed to wear their gifts anywhere else.

She authored several books and helped found an organization that saw the women’s movement as an opportunity to improve the lives of women and children. Hallie Q. Brown completed her career and life in Wilberforce, Ohio.

Member Voice WHO ARE WE AS AFRICAN AMERICANS? In his book; Liberating our Dignity; Saving Our Souls, Lee H. Butler Jr., challenges African Americans to answer the question, who are we as African American? He informs us of the Egyptian directive, “Know thyself,” is, therefore, more than a kindly adage. Self- knowledge is the first possibility for a new life. For African American culture to be truly “American,” it has to express the founding ideas of American Liberty, justice, survival and equality. We do not consciously identify ourselves as “slave Americans,” and yet many Black folks, consciously and unconsciously, live by the historical interpretation of Blacks being slave for life. When we exclude Africa, from our sense of beginning, African American becomes a synonym for the powerless, hopeless, degraded Black body in America. It is a human responsibility to work to seek and struggle for freedom. It is therefore, our responsibility to work out our soul’s salvation by seeking to liberate ourselves from the depraved identity of “Slave American.” We were not slaves when we landed on these shores but became enslaved Africans who had a story to tell (Butler 12). Throughout human history, all peoples have experienced some form of slavery. But how many of those peoples still have slavery so closely identified with their being? Even in America, the indentured system was a slave system that included Europeans. Slavery was our circumstances, not the essence of our being. We will take a major step toward freedom when we liberate ourselves to say that we are Africans who were enslaved, rather than slaves who left Africa (12). In the movie “Roots,” newly arrived African to America, Toby had to be trained to be a Slave. Why? Many Black Africans came from Mighty Kingdoms.

MIGHTY KINGDOMS Science Digest, September 1981 Black Africans are thought to have slumbered through millennia immersed in tribal life. Egyptian records dating from 4,000 years ago describe independent chiefdoms in Punt (Ethiopia) with armies the pharaoh could not defeat. The Egyptians instead subjugated the Nubian people of Cush and established the great city of

26

Meroe in what is now Sudan. Independent of the Egyptians by 300 B. C., Meroe established its own unique culture. Trade states, based especially on gold, developed throughout Africa. In the fourteenth century, these people reached their zenith with the construction of Great Zimbabwe, a gigantic religious complex so spectacular that Europeans long denied it had been constructive by “primitive” Africans, built with unmortared granite, the complex had high walls vaulted gateways and massive towers. Mali, was one of the last of the black kingdoms. It was immensely wealthy; in 1324, its king astonished the city of Ciaro with a retinue of 100 camels, each loaded with 300 pounds of gold! Various parts of Mali were linked by the Niger River, and the cities Jenne’ and Timbuktu were known even in Europe as centers of trade and learning. If the emphasis here appears to be placed on the way Africans constructed the mighty Kingdoms, it is because there seems to be merit in trying to secure as intimate an understanding as possible of the area in which the bulk of these people, who were forcefully transported to America via the Slave Trade became the black workers of the Americas building riches and wealth for centuries for Southern States and Plantations as slaves. “We were not slaves when we landed on these shores, but became enslaved Africans who had a story to tell” (12).
