MT. ENON’S VISION STATEMENT

MOTTO Our motto is "Because We Care, We Share". We share our love, resources, and faith with all. We are a Christian family and invite all to become children of God in the fullest way by receiving the teachings and gift of salvation. MISSION Our Mission is to maintain the general design of the Church as outlined in the New Testament of the Holy Bible. To extol and magnify Christ and His teachings: To promote the spiritual and moral welfare of its members. To advance the Christian faith and religion: To enforce good order: To aid the needy and suffering within the sphere of its influence both within the congregation and

community.

The vision of Mount Enon Missionary Baptist Church is to: EXALT the Lord through worship, EVANGELIZE the Lost through relationships, EDIFY, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the Laity through discipleship and to ENCOURAGE the Laborers through fellowship. Because we are a striving congregation in Dayton, Ohio, which has been called and commissioned to become a group of believers in whom the Lord will be well pleased by developing each member as true disciples of Jesus Christ: We will LOVE the Lord according to Deuteronomy 30:1516 We will LEARN the Word according to Deuteronomy 17:18-20 We will LIVE the Word according to Joshua 1:8 and We will LEAD the World through the Word according to Acts 1:8 We are challenged today, to get involved, and take responsibility, and we must understand that we are ambassadors of Christ and of Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church. We decree and order that all Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church would experience a greater move of God in their lives because they submit to live by God’s biblical order to win Lives to Christ. “God can do anything; you know-far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” (Ephesians 3:20) Pastor Cory Pruitt

HAPPY 7TH ANNIVERSARY PASTOR CORY J. PRUITT Pastor Cory J. Pruitt is a native of Mobile, Alabama and a graduate of John L. LeFlore High School. Pastor Pruitt attended Selma University, Selma, Alabama and completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Bible and Theological Studies at Liberty University, Lynchburg, Virginia. Pastor Pruitt is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity Degree at United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. Pastor Pruitt is the proud father of Madison, Kelsey, Rachel, Montanna, Cory Jr., Jaylen, and Blake. Pastor Pruitt served as Pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church #2 of Grove Hill, Alabama for eight years. Under Pastor Pruitt’s leadership, Mt. Zion became a visionary ministry whose goal was to meet the total needs of individuals and the community. However, on February 24, 2012, God spoke to the congregation of the Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton, OH to elect Pastor Cory J. Pruitt to be their Pastor. Pastor Cory J. Pruitt accepted the call from God to become the eighth Pastor of the Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church, and in obedience to the Holy Spirit, he will continue to carry out the vision given to him by God to lead the church in building a healthy church to serve an unhealthy society. Pastor Pruitt’s goals are many. However they include completely eliminating the debt on the J. F. Cunningham Family Life Center as well as continue to increase and diversify the ministries of Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church to better meet the needs of its members and the surrounding community. Pastor Pruitt is also committed to educating, empowering and evangelizing on a national level via weekly TV Broadcasting and the Daily Prayer Line. He often quotes Job 22:27, “If we pray, God will hear us, and if we pay our vows we can decree a thing.” Pastor Pruitt has an expectation that those living on the margins of society will feel compelled to come to Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church, a house for all people to experience the love and care within the walls of the building and hearts of the people. Pastor Pruitt is a man after God’s own heart, one that has been sent of God, one who is anointed, appointed, and is a dynamic deliverer of the Word of God. Pastor Pruitt is one that preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ with passion and without apology, with a heart and mind dedicated to the will of God. 6

PASTOR PRUITT FULFILLS HIS ROLE AS SHEPHARD OF MT. ENON MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH As we celebrate the month of April and prepare for the Holy week, we have already reflected on the “Seven Last Words of Jesus as he hung and died on the cross, presented for the first time by seven dynamic women leaders and Ministers of Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church, now we take a look at our spiritual leader Pastor Cory J Pruitt, our Shepherd. Seven years ago, Pastor Pruitt began his pastorage in Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church. As we worked with and watched Pastor Pruitt, we discovered that he was correctly identified as our “Shepherd.” The Shepherd is described as one who exercises the good of charity, which must be obvious to everyone. This is a familiar figure in the Old and New Testament. He who leads and teaches is called a Shepherd and those who are led are called the Flock. He who does not lead to the good of charity, (love) and teach it, is not a true “Shepherd” and he who does not learn and follow is not the “flock.” Pastor Pruitt ministers and teachers through his preaching every Sundays and teaches his flock through Bible Study, which is taught Wednesday mornings, Wednesday evenings and every Saturday morning. Sunday School lessons are taught each Sunday Morning and Prayer services are done on a regular basis mornings and evenings via a tele-conference line. He provides food and clothing for those in need in the community. As he leads, teaches or in whatever capacity he interacts with his congregation and or Flock, he makes it a point to treat everyone the same with the same genuine kindness, humility and compassion. As a shepherd, he watches over his flock carefully, making sure everyone is cared for and not left out or forgotten. Pastor Pruitt along with a visitation crew visits all members who are in hospitals, home bound and nursing Homes. He cares for the strong, the weak and the disabled. One can observe him assisting with serving a dinner in the Family Life Center, carefully searching the crowd until he finds the elderly and the disabled and he personally makes sure those individuals were attended to first. This he does consistently. “Come unto me and rest” “all ye that labor (Matthew 11:28) He reaches out and touches all those who seek his advice, praying for those who seek it, and providing encouragement to everyone. With his cautious and gentle approach, he often breaks down fear and anxiety with a gentle and compassionate countenance. 7

When dealing with situations and individuals who may be troublesome or painful to deal with, he listens to everyone allowing them to express their opinions and have a voice. In confrontational situations, he handles these situations with courage and strength never retreating from his stated positions, patiently allowing everyone to voice his/her opinions. Pastor Pruitt does not just teach his flock how to love each other, we see God’s Holy Spirit moving in him guiding him through loving and challenging situations, as our shepherd, he always leads his flock with a spirit of love. Lois E. Foy, Educator, Historian Proverbs 27:23 - Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, [and] look well to thy herds.

THE MEANING OF THE NUMBER

7

IN THE BIBLE

Seven years ago, Cory Pruitt was installed as Pastor of Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church and he was called our Shepherd. This month as we celebrate Easter and the Death of Jesus, Pastor Pruitt decided that the Seven Last Words presented each year in churches all over the country, usually by Male Ministers and Pastors, would be presented this year by seven women. These dynamic women filled with the Holy Spirit made History in Mt. Enon with their powerful delivery of the Seven Last Words. As women their presentation was their Biblical understanding and meaning of what occurred at the Cross, when Jesus was dying and his mother was present. I must say, these women not only preached the word but presented it as highly qualified teachers, leaders and Ministers of Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church. In this article for our Voice, we will examine some of the reasons 7 was used in the Bible Looking at the meaning of 7 as it is described in the Bible, 7 is the number of completeness and perfection and derives much of it’s meaning from being tied directly to God’s creation of all things. According to some Jewish traditions, the creation of Adam occurred on September 26th, 3760 B.C., which is the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar. The word ‘created’ is 8

used 7 times describing God’s creative work (Genesis 1:1, 21,27 three times). There are 7 days in a week and God’s Sabbath is on the 7th day. Additional information on the Biblical Meaning of 7 Jesus we find Jesus performing the seven miracles on God’s holy Sabbath Day. 1. Jesus healed the withered hand of a man attending synagogue service (Matthew 12:9) 2. At a Capemaum synagogue he casts out an unclean spirit that possessed a man (Mark 1:21) 3. Right after the above miracle Jesus heals Peter’s wife’s mother of a fever (Mark 1:29) 4. A woman attending synagogue, who was made sick by a demon for eighteen years, is released from her bondage (Luke 13:11) 5. At a Pharisee’s house eating a meal with the host and several lawyers, Jesus heals a man with dropsy (Luke 14:2) 6. A man who is disabled and unable to walk is healed at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:8) 7. Jesus heals a man born blind at the pool of Siloam (John 9:14) Why was the number seven significant in the Bible? The number 7 is important in both the Old and New Testament. As we see in the Seven Last Words spoken by Jesus on the cross, and the Seven miracles performed by Jesus, the story of the creation was told with the importance of the number 7. In the Old Testament: the first creation story in Genesis: Noah took every clean beast and every bird by 7’s, and in 7 days it rained. It seems that numerology was so important that representing an event or series of events with the number 7 helped prove that the story was true (BibleStudy.org). Lois E. Foy, Educator, Historian

What is Easter Sunday? Answer: For some, Easter Sunday is about the Easter Bunny, colorfully decorated Easter eggs, and Easter egg hunts. Most people understand that Easter Sunday has something to do with the resurrection of Jesus but are confused as to how the resurrection is related to the Easter eggs and the Easter bunny. Biblically speaking, there is absolutely no connection between the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the common modern traditions related to Easter Sunday. As a background, please read our article on the origins of Easter. Essentially, what occurred is that in order to make Christianity more attractive to non-Christians, the ancient Roman Catholic Church mixed the celebration of Jesus' resurrection with celebrations that involved spring fertility rituals. These spring fertility rituals are the source of the egg and bunny traditions. The Bible makes it clear that Jesus was resurrected on the first day of the week, Sunday (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2,9; Luke 24:1; John 20:1,19). Jesus' resurrection is most worthy of being celebrated (see 1 Corinthians 15). While it is appropriate for Jesus' resurrection to be celebrated on a Sunday, the day on which Jesus' resurrection is celebrated should not be referred to as Easter. Easter has nothing to do with Jesus' resurrection on a Sunday. As a result, many Christians feel strongly that the day on which we celebrate Jesus' resurrection should not be referred to as "Easter Sunday." Rather, something like "Resurrection Sunday" would be far more appropriate and biblical. For the Christian, it is unthinkable that we would allow the silliness of Easter eggs and the Easter bunny to be the focus of the day instead of Jesus' resurrection. By all means, celebrate Christ's resurrection on Easter Sunday. Christ's resurrection is something that should be celebrated every day, not just once a year. At the same time, if we choose to celebrate Easter Sunday, we should not allow the fun and games to distract our attention from what the day should truly be all about—the fact that Jesus was resurrected from the dead, and that His resurrection demonstrates that we can indeed be promised an eternal home in Heaven by receiving Jesus as our Savior. 12
