Welcome

We are a family operation, devoted to producing high quality, grass-efficient Angus genetics.

Thank you for your interest in our breeding program.

We’re excited to have 25 bulls in this catalogue for our upcoming Online Autumn Bull Sale. They demonstrate what we strive for here at Trio Angus, which is to produce genetics that will perform in grass-based breeding systems.

We’ve added this March sale to our offering specifically for those breeders with an Autumn joining or those wanting to spread their bull purchases throughout the year.

Like all our bulls, this sale draft has been 100% raised on grass. They’ve been grown out on native and improved pastures. In our minds, this is the best way to prepare bulls for a successful joining season. Foraging keeps them mobile and eating grass instead of a grain is a win-win for semen quality & bull longevity.

Most of the bulls are 18 months of age, plus one pen of two year old bulls. They represent some exciting new genetics for our program, including the Culcairn’s who are the first sons of Rennylea S355 to sell.

The sale will be solely online – a helmsman sale on AuctionsPlus. We trialled this system last year and received great feedback. People liked that all the bulls were for sale at once as it made comparing prices easier. They also enjoyed having time to deliberate without the pressure of an auctioneer. Overall, our clients found it a great way to buy their bulls.

We will hold a Bull Inspection Day on Monday 24 March (a few days before the online sale), but inspections of the bulls at other times are always welcome.

We encourage you to make the most of the opportunity this Autumn sale creates – buying bulls at this time could be a great option for your business.

All the information about this upcoming sale can be found in this catalogue and on our website, or feel free to contact us if we can help in any way.

Matt & Shell

Bull preparation

Our sale bulls are 100% raised on grass. They’ve been grown out on native and improved pastures. In our minds, this is the best way to prepare bulls for a successful breeding life. Foraging keeps them mobile and eating grass.

Our grazing system

We’ve worked with grazing consultant, Dick Richardson, for eight years now. He’s taught us a lot about how to better plan our grazing to ensure we improve the soil health, plant growth and also animal performance.

It’s a continual learning process, but we now follow a modified version of the Venter-Drewers Grazing System. This is a type of cell grazing that incorporates ‘Priority’ and ‘Sabbath’ paddocks.

The Trio temperament

Docility is a key focus of our breeding program. Working with quiet cattle not only makes the job safer and easier, but it also makes it a lot more enjoyable!

We genetically select for good temperaments.

We use low stress stock handling. This teaches the animals how to respond to pressure and allows them to be worked in a calm manner.

We expose our bulls to as much as possible to prepare them for their new homes.

Online Helmsman Sale

The smarter way buy bulls

This year we will again be having our sale solely online through AuctionsPlus. As people have become more familiar with buying livestock online, we feel it’s a natural progression that creates a win-win for our clients.

It’s easier

With the online helmsman sale all of the bulls are for sale at once. This lets you see what price every bull is on. You can then think about your options and bid accordingly. If you get out-priced on one, you can easily start bidding on another instead.

Less pressure

A helmsman sale gives buyers plenty of time to deliberate. The auction will run for approximately 30 minutes before the timer starts, so there’s plenty of time for you to think about and execute your buying plan. You also don’t need to worry about the pressure from an auctioneer.

Get the bull you want

The lot order of the bulls doesn’t impact you in a helmsman sale, unlike an open cry auction where you can get caught out waiting for a bull later in the sale. This means with a helmsman sale its easier to secure the bulls you want. This outcome is important for us too, we want

HOW WILL IT WORK?

This sale will run just like a normal Eastern States sale on AuctionsPlus.

Go to www.auctionsplus.com.au and ‘Connect to Bid’. All of the lots will come up at once with their current price and you can simply bid on the lots you choose.

The sale will run for approximately 30 minutes, after which a countdown timer will begin. The sale will conclude when there are no further bids.

If you are new to bidding on AuctionsPlus please ensure you register 24 hours in advance of the sale.

If you have questions about the new sale format please just get in touch with Matt or Shelley.

Five Steps for buying better heifer bulls

Want to buy a great heifer bull?

Follow these simple steps to pick the right bulls and bid with more confidence and less stress on sale day.

These tips will help you get the bull selection right for an improved calving, but good heifer management plays a key role. As a rule, genetics account for 40% and the environment accounts for the other 60%. At Trio Angus, we work hard to get the genetics right, it’s then up to you to control the environmental effects to the best of your ability. Ensuring your heifers are well grown by the end of the first trimester is vital.

Good genetics, combined with good management, is the key to a profitable and stress free calving season.

1

Look at the structure of the bull

The bull’s shoulders are an important aspect to check. Smooth shoulders promote an easy calving. The shoulders should be smooth against the rib cage. We find an easy way to assess this is to stand at the front of the bull and look at the top of his shoulder blades.

BULL A has less width at the top of the shoulder and at the point of the shoulder.

2

Assess the bull’s physical size

It’s important to think about the bull’s physical size. A heavy, mature bull may not be ideal for joining smaller heifers. We find yearling bulls work well over heifers, as they are similar size and reduce the risk of injury.

3

Look at the Birth Weight EBV

The Birth Weight EBV reflects the weight of the calf at birth, so it makes sense that a lighter calf is preferred. This means a lower Birth Weight EBV should be selected. Currently the breed average Birth Weight EBV is +4.1, so we suggest selecting a birth weight at or below this figure.

BULL A has the best Birth Weight EBV for calving ease (lower figure).

Note: Calving Ease EBVs are also a great tool, however most sale bulls do not have an EBV of high enough accuracy to be useful.

4 Look at the Gestation Length

EBV

The Gestation Length EBV is the number of days from conception to birth. Calves that are born a few days early are smaller. A negative Gestation Length EBV is ideal. Currently the breed average for Gestation Length EBV is -4.8, so any figure below this is good.

BULL A has the best Gestation Length EBV for calving ease (lower figure).

5 Take note of the pedigree

A bull’s pedigree can give an indication of how reliable his calving ease will be. Stacking multiple generations of calving ease provides more reliability, meaning less chance of a ‘throwback’ to larger calves. Look in each bull’s ‘Comments’ in the catalogue for insights.

Using EBV Percentiles –––

MAKING IT EASIER TO PICK THE RIGHT BULL

Selecting the right bull for your business needs to be as easy as possible. So we’ve incorporated percentiles into our catalogue as an extra tool to help you.

A percentile value allows you to see where an animal sits in the breed for each trait. This gives you more information than an EBV figure alone. Eg. If an animal sits in the 30th Percentile for 600D it means he’s in the Top 30% of the breed. Generally, the lower the percentile figure the better, except in the case of Mature Cow Weight where being the biggest isn’t always the best.

The IMF of this

in the fifth Percentile, meaning he’s in the top 5% of the breed for this
