THURSDAY 21 AUGUST 2025,
COMMENCING AT 1.00PM
ON-PROPERTY AT ‘KAROO’ BATHURST NSW
We welcome you to our 27th annual on-property auction and are pleased to offer you 80 powerful, robust, carcase filled, fertile bulls.
We are pleased to welcome you to our 27th annual on-property auction and are pleased to offer you 80 powerful, robust, carcase filled, fertile bulls. In 2025 we are proud to present a draft of bulls designed for the demands of the commercial beef industry. The bulls are full of muscle, easy fleshing, quiet temperament, highly fertile, have fine coats and are backed by functional cow families.
Karoo Angus offers a great opportunity for commercial producers to access quality genetics at affordable prices. We strive to breed cattle of superior genetics whilst sticking to our values and beliefs. Maternal strength underpins the success of our herd’s breeding potency and its consistency of progeny.
Our bulls are suited to a range of markets and climates with tremendous local support. As always, we are grateful for the continued support from our clients. Karoo genetics dominated the Blue Ribbon weaner sale earlier this year. The front row was dominated by our clients’ steers along with a large draft of our own. Our top pen of steers took out the best presented pen, a true highlight for the hard work and effort our team puts in throughout the year.
New genetics offered, this sale sees the first of the Goalkeeper sons, they are stacked full of performance, have natural balance and are super quiet. Quaterback has an impressive line of bulls, plenty of length, width and overall growth. Carcase quality is further enhanced by a high quality run of L519 sons or grandsons.
All bulls have been scanned and genomically tested to increase the accuracy of their EBVs and are sired verified, tested Pestivirus negative, vaccinated, drenched vet inspected, and semen tested. The Karoo bulls are in forward condition and come out of a grass production system ready to work for you.
For the second year in a row, we will have 100 NSM commercial females for offer. They truly are the heart of our commercial herd. They are pregnancy tested empty and have the full treatment of vaccines and drenches to have them ready for mating from September onwards.
We encourage our clients to let us know about how the bulls they have bought perform, we really appreciate the feedback, and we are always up for a chat!
We want to thank you, our loyal supporters, it doesn’t go unnoticed. We also would like to thank the team that works alongside us, they share our values, passion, hard work and integrity.
If you would like to know more about the bulls, or any part of our program, please give Annie a call, or our agents Elders Emms Mooney, Ben Emms or Liam Murphy. We welcome Paul Dooley as the guest auctioneer this year, who has also been through the sale group.
We look forward to seeing you on sale day for a complimentary morning tea and lunch.

PLEASE BRING THIS CATALOGUE TO THE SALE
All bulls are offered with our quality assurance guarantee. In addition, we take the following steps at ‘Karoo’, against reproductive losses. This means that all bulls have: - been tested to prove they are PI Negative via TSU samples - vaccinated with: 7-in-1, Lepto, Pestiguard, Vibro, IBR, Flukazole C, Lice treatment – Stampede
All bulls have either been tested free of genetic mutations (AM, NH, CA, DD),or are pedigree free except for lots 9, 48 and 75 their results are still pending but will be available on sale day.
All bulls have been vet inspected for physical soundness and palpitation of the sexual anatomy, and measurement and examination of testes. Any claim against fertility must be forwarded to the vendor or agent within nine (9) months accompanied by a veterinary certificate.
When choosing bulls you need to use both the EBVs and visual assessment. Visual assessment is essential to assess physical and structural soundness and is a reasonable indicator of health and temperament. EBVs are a tool that will help you to make more ‘educated’ decisions when you are choosing breeding stock.
Karoo reserves the right to collect semen for within herd use from any bull that is sold. This will be at our expense and the purchases convenience.
All bulls in this catalogue are DNA sire verified. This improves the integrity of the pedigree, genetic condition and Angus BREEDPLAN EBV information that is provided.
Do your homework well before the sale when you have plenty of time. Set some parameters for your EBVs that fall within your market requirements to narrow down potential purchases. Use this ‘suitable list’ of bulls and spend time looking, assessing the physical characteristics that you require.
All sale bulls have been examined for fertility. This examination includes a semen test and palpitation of the sexual anatomy, measurement and examination of the testes.
At Karoo we are proud of the product that we offer to our customers. We guarantee the fertility of all the bulls. If a bull should prove infertile or breaks down due to reasons other than injury, misadventure or negligence, Karoo will provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available, or issue you with a credit equal to the purchase price minus any salvage value.
Any request for replacement or refund must be lodged with the vendor or agent within nine months from the date of purchase, accompanied by a veterinary certificate.
We wish you every success with your purchase and we believe that the bulls will enhance your breeding programme, however if you have any problems, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Always be considerate to your new bull/s and handle them with respect and kindness. Handle them quietly, walk them rather than rushing them, treat them with care and in a gentle manner and they will do likewise to you.
A bull leaving ‘Karoo’ is leaving the security of a large mob, and will arrive in a strange environment at the purchaser’s property. When the bull/s are unloaded it is recommended you have a steer or cow as a companion waiting for him in the yard.
A young bull can move in with older bulls and settle well, but remember, being the youngest, he will get the last of any feed available, because of the pecking order. The paddock needs to be reasonably large so he can keep away from the others and find adequate feed. Young bulls are still growing fast and need enough feed to maintain their growth pattern.
‘Karoo’ bulls are used to being handled by stockmen with four wheel motorbikes, utes and dogs.

The Beef Class Structural Assessment System uses a 1 – 9 scoring system for feet and leg structure:
• A score of 5 is ideal
• 4 and 6 show slight variation from ideal, but this includes most animals. Any animal scoring 4 and 6 would be acceptable in any breeding program
• 3 and 7 shows greater variation, but would be acceptable in most commercial breeding programs, however seedstock producers should be wary
• 2 and 8 are low scoring animals and should be looked at carefully before purchasing
A 1 – 5 scoring system is used for sheath attachment. For feet and leg assessment, animals need to be on a hard, flat and even surface where animal can move/stand naturally.
TRAITS: SCORING RANGE 1 – 9
Front Feet Claw Set 1 – open divergent; 5 – good; 9 – extreme scissor claw
Rear Feet Claw Set 1 – open divergent; 5 – good; 9 – extreme scissor claw
Reference: Shape (primarily curl) and evenness of the claw set.
Front Feet Angle 1 – steep (stubbed toe); 5 – good; 9 – shallow heel
Rear Feet Angle 1 – steep (stubbed toe); 5 – good; 9 – shallow heel
Reference: Strength of pastern, depth of heel and length of foot.
Rear Leg Side View 1 – straight (post legged); 5 – good; 9 – sickle hocked
Reference: Angle measured at the front of the hock.
Rear Leg Hind View 1 – bow legged; 5 – good (parallel); 9 – cow hocked
Reference: Angle measured at the front of the hock.
Four lots, each consisting of 25 Karoo Commercial Females, EU Accredited NSM. See page 40
The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation is the genetic evaluation program adopted by Angus Australia for Angus and Angus influenced beef cattle. The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation uses Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (e.g. weight, carcase, fertility).
The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation is an international genetic evaluation and includes pedigree, performance and genomic information from the Angus Australia and Angus New Zealand databases, along with selected information from the American and Canadian Angus Associations.
The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation utilises a range of genetic evaluation software, including the internationally recognised BLUPF90 family of programs, and BREEDPLAN® beef genetic evaluation analytical software, as developed by the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), a joint institute of NSW Agriculture and the University of New England, and Meat and Livestock Australia Limited (MLA).
An animal’s breeding value can be defined as its genetic merit for each trait. While it is not possible to determine an animal’s true breeding value, it is possible to estimate it. These estimates of an animal’s true breeding value are called EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values).
EBVs are expressed as the difference between an individual animal’s genetics and a historical genetic level (i.e. group of animals) within the TACE genetic evaluation, and are reported in the units in which the measurements are taken.
then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
Or similarly, a bull with an IMF EBV of +3.0 would be expected to produce progeny with on average, 1% more intramuscular fat in a 400 kg carcase than a bull with a IMF EBV of +1.0 (i.e. 2% difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
EBVs can also be used to benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to the genetics of other Angus or Angus infused animals in Australia.
To benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to other Angus animals, an animal’s EBV can be compared to the EBV reference tables, which provide:
• the breed average EBV
• the percentile bands table
The current breed average EBV is listed on page 41 of this publication, while the current EBV quick reference tables are included on pages 42 – 44.
For easy reference, the percentile band in which an animal’s EBV ranks is also published in association with the EBV.
An accuracy value is published with each EBV, and is usually displayed as a percentage value immediately below the EBV. The accuracy value provides an indication of the reliability of the EBV in estimating the animal’s genetics (or true breeding value), and is an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of the EBV.

Selection Index
$A $ Genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a typical commercial self replacing herd using Angus bulls. This selection index is not specific to a particular production system or market end-point, but identifies animals that will improve overall profitability in the majority of commercial grass and grain finishing beef production systems.
$A-L Genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a typical commercial self replacing herd using Angus bulls. This selection index is not specific to a particular market end-point, but identifies animals that will improve overall net profitability in the majority of commercial, self replacing, grass and grain finishing beef production systems. The $A-L index is similar to the $A index but is modelled on a production system where feed is surplus to requirements for the majority of the year, or the cost of supplying additional feed when animal feed requirements increase is low. While the $A aims to maintain MCW, the $A-L does not aim to limit the increase in MCW as there is minimal cost incurred if the feed maintenance requirements of the female breeding herd increase as a result of selection decisions.
Higher EBVs indicate heavier mature weight.
Higher EBVs indicate heavier live weight.
Lower EBVs indicate shorter time to calving.
Higher EBVs indicate larger scrotal circumference.
Higher EBVs indicate heavier carcase weight
Higher EBVs indicate larger eye muscle area.
Higher EBVs indicate more fat.
Higher EBVs indicate more fat.
Higher EBVs indicate higher yield.
Higher EBVs indicate more intramuscular fat.
Lower EBVs indicate more feed efficiency.
Higher EBVs indicate better temperament.
Lower EBVs indicate more desirable foot angle.
Lower EBVs indicate more desirable claw structure.
Higher selection index values indicate greater profitability.
Higher selection indexes indicate greater profitability.

It was an absolute privilege to welcome 250 Angus breeders and enthusiasts from 26 countries to Karoo as part of the World Angus Forum 2025. With over 600 head on display, our team worked tirelessly to showcase the scale and high quality of our operation. Visitors showed genuine interest in our breeding program, cropping systems, and pasture improvements, and we’re proud to have shared a glimpse into life at Karoo.
The World Angus Forum is truly a world-class event that only comes to Australia once every few decades; the last time being in 1997, when Annie was Angus Youth Ambassador. To come full circle and host part of the tour in 2025 was a moment of real gratitude and pride for how far Karoo has come.
It was a big undertaking, but a day filled with energy, connection, and meaningful conversations. From the catalogue we produced for the occasion to Gareth’s paddock tours and our country hospitality, every detail reflected the passion and dedication of our team.
A heartfelt thank you to Angus Australia and the World Angus Forum for the opportunity to be involved in such a significant event. To be one of only a handful of studs selected to host the tour was an honour we will long remember.

Cattle producers with experience in managing yearlings often say that they prefer them because they settle in better, mix with other cattle more easily and are easier to handle than older bulls.
However, there are some far more tangible incentives in using them. By first using bulls as yearlings, the working life of a bull can be extended by a year or more—a 25% increase. As a result, the purchase price and running costs of bulls can be spread over more calves. This reduces bull costs per calf and boosts profitability.
Yearling bulls also allow cattle breeders the opportunity to achieve faster rates of genetic improvement. This is due to the influence of what geneticist’s call ‘generation interval’, that is, the average age of parents when their calves are born. By using genetically superior bulls as young as possible, faster turnover rates of genes are achieved. Joining yearling bulls to yearling heifers can maximise genetic improvement by lowering generation intervals.
Yearling bulls are less costly to produce. Seedstock suppliers sell their bulls 6–12 months earlier, which simplifies their management and reduces overheads. In addition to these advantages, there is strong circumstantial evidence to suggest that bulls used first as yearlings have even longer working lives because of superior fitness and lower levels of body fat. The more active lives of these bulls means that they are maintained at body weights below their genetic potential. As a result, less stress is placed on their skeletal structure when serving, with less likelihood of breakdowns occurring.
The two biggest causes of breakdowns in bulls are hip arthritis (over 50% of all wastage) and broken penis. It would appear that bulls used first as yearlings are less affected by these serious sources of economic loss.
The benefits of using yearling bulls include:
• Accelerated genetic gain within your herd
• In-built soundness and longevity, as the bulls are young, keen, strong, lean and fit
• Can lower cost of production as they are proven to have longer working lives resulting in a lower cost per calf over time
• Can be easier to manage as are working instead of idle in a paddock and are then more ready to settle into a rest period
• Whilst working them can impact appearance, attention to post joining diet overcomes this and the bulls generally remain lean and fit for longer
• Lighter weights can also extend their use over heifers
• Being younger they are also more adaptable to their new environment

A LIFE DEVOTED TO GOOD CATTLE, STRONG VALUES, AND AN ENDURING BELIEF IN THE POWER OF PEOPLE AND THE PLACE HE LOVED, KAROO.
The bond John and I had was remarkable, his guidance of me, and loyalty to me, as well as our friendship and respect of each other is something I will treasure for years to come. From a very young age we both just loved cattle, breeding, farming, and pure hard work. He is to be remembered for being an icon of the beef industry and his story telling! We love you dearly dad, go rest with mum, your work here is done.
