We are a family operation, devoted to producing high quality, grass-efficient Angus genetics.
Thank you for your interest in our breeding program. We’re excited to have 47 bulls in this catalogue for our upcoming online sale. They demonstrate what we strive for here at Trio Angus, which is to produce genetics that will perform in grass-based breeding systems.
These bulls have been 100% raised on grass. They’ve been grown out on native and improved pastures, moving on to pasture-cropped oats prior to the sale. In our minds, this is the best way to prepare bulls for a successful breeding life. Foraging keeps them mobile and eating grass instead of a grain is a winwin for semen quality and bull longevity.
This year we’ll have more two year old bulls on offer, with over a third of the draft being older bulls. The remainder of the bulls will be 18 months of age and represent some exciting new genetics. Whilst our breeding goals remain the same, our sale day plan has changed. This year our sale will be solely online. It will be a helmsman sale on AuctionsPlus. We feel this new format will offer some exciting advantages to our clients. It make comparing bulls
and prices easier and will also give people time to deliberate without the pressure of an auctioneer. We’re confident people will find this a better way to buy bulls.
With this new format comes new options for us as stud breeders too. It will let us customise our offering to better suit market demand.
We always want to keep progressing. We were one of the very first studs to adopt a video auction at our sale many years ago. It’s now time for us to keep moving forward and migrate to an online sale.
Our Bull Inspection Day will now become more valuable. It will be held on Monday 19 August (a few days before the online sale). It will be a great chance to look through the bulls and for us all to catch up. We’re more than happy to show people through the bulls at any other time as well.
All the information about our upcoming bull sale can be found in this catalogue, on our website, or please feel free to contact us if we can help in any way.
Our sale will commence at 1.00pm on Thursday 22 August, 2024 online only.
The sale will be conducted on AuctionsPlus and run under the Helmsman style format. New users please register with AuctionsPlus 24 hours before the sale if you wish to bid. All bulls are sold GST exclusive and as per standard AuctionsPlus terms and conditions. Successful purchasers will be contacted by Trio Angus within 24 hours of the sale.
Bulls will be penned for inspection from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Monday 19 August. Inspections will be held on-property at ‘Ingleburn’, 6914 Ulan Road, Cassilis NSW. From Cassilis, travel 10kms west on the Golden Highway, turn left onto the Ulan/Mudgee Road, ‘Ingleburn’ is 2.5km on the left (see map on Page 7). Refreshments available all day.
A rebate of 2% will be payable to agents who introduce their clients in writing 24 hours prior to the sale. Please email introductions to info@trioangus.com.au
The bulls are ready for immediate use. They have been:
• Semen tested
• Tested Pestivirus free
• Vaccinated with 7 in 1
• Vaccinated for Vibrio
• Drenched with Cydectin Platinum
Our herd is Johne’s Beef Assurance Score (J-BAS) 6.
The bulls have been running in their respective age groups. They’ve been grazing a mix of native and improved pastures and forage oats.
There is no vendor insurance on the bulls. We encourage buyers to insure their purchases. Vendors can help arrange insurance at the purchaser’s request.
All bulls are sold as fertile and capable of natural service. If, within 6 months of sale, a bull should breakdown due to reasons other than injury, misadventure or negligence, Trio Angus will provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available, or issue you with a credit equal to the purchase price minus salvage value. This credit may be used to purchase a bull from Trio Angus within the next two years. Any request for replacement/refund must be lodged with the vendor within six months of purchase and be accompanied by a current vet certificate.
All of the cattle are quiet to handle under normal conditions. However, there are always risks associated with handling cattle. Visitors enter the cattle pens at their own risk.
Trio Angus can arrange free delivery to Mudgee, Scone, Dubbo and Gunnedah. Please contact the vendors after the sale to discuss your delivery plans. Delivery will take place in the week following the sale.
Children must not enter the pens under any circumstances. The vendor accepts no liability for accidents that may occur whilst on the property.
Animal details included in this catalogue, including but not limited to pedigree, DNA information, Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and Index values, are based on information provided by the breeder or owner of the animal. Whilst all reasonable care has been taken to ensure that the information provided in this catalogue was correct at the time of publication, Angus Australia will assume no responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of the information, nor for the outcome (including consequential loss) of any action taken based on this information.
Like always, we will take all care to look after your bull after the sale, but no responsibility can be accepted whilst awaiting delivery. Insurance is encouraged and vendors can arrange upon your request.
Refreshments will be available all day.
Unsure if you can make our Bull Inspection Day? Inspections are always welcome and available at other times by appointment.
Videos of each bull are also available on our website: www.trioangus.com.au/bull-sale

This year we are moving to an Online Only Bull Sale through AuctionsPlus. As people have become more familiar with buying livestock online, we feel it’s a natural progression that will create a win-win for our clients.
With the online helmsman sale all of the bulls are for sale at once. This lets you see what price every bull is on. You can then think about your options and bid accordingly. If you get out-priced on one, you can easily start bidding on another instead.
A helmsman sale gives buyers plenty of time to deliberate. The auction will run for approximately 30 minutes before the timer starts, so there’s plenty of time for you to think about and execute your buying plan. You also don’t need to worry about the pressure from an auctioneer.
The lot order of the bulls doesn’t impact you in a helmsman sale, unlike an open cry auction where you can get caught out waiting for a bull later in the sale. This means with a helmsman sale its easier to secure the bulls
The 2024 Trio Angus Online Sale will run just like a normal Eastern States sale on AuctionsPlus.
Go to www.auctionsplus.com.au and ‘Connect to Bid’. All of the lots will come up at once with their current price and you can simply bid on the lots you choose. The sale will run for approximately 30 minutes, after which a countdown timer will begin. The sale will conclude when there are no further bids.
If you are new to bidding on AuctionsPlus please ensure you register 24 hours in advance of the sale.
If you have questions about the new sale format please just get in touch with Matt or Shelley.
Docility is a key focus of our breeding program. Working with quiet cattle not only makes the job safer and easier, but it also makes it a lot more enjoyable!
We genetically select for good temperaments.
We use low stress stock handling. This teaches the animals how to respond to pressure and allows them to be worked in a calm manner.
We expose our bulls to as much as possible to prepare them for their new homes.
We’ve worked with grazing consultant, Dick Richardson, for eight years now. He’s taught us a lot about how to better plan our grazing to ensure we improve the soil health, plant growth and also animal performance.
It’s a continual learning process, but we now follow a modified version of the Venter-Drewers Grazing System. This is a type of cell grazing that incorporates ‘Priority’ and ‘Sabbath’ paddocks.
Our sale bulls are 100% raised on grass. They’ve been grown out on native and improved pastures, moving on to pasture-cropped oats prior to the sale. In our minds, this is the best way to prepare bulls for a successful breeding life. Foraging keeps them mobile and eating grass instead of a grain is a win-win for semen quality and bull longevity.
Selecting the right bull for your business needs to be as easy as possible. So we’ve incorporated percentiles into our catalogue as an extra tool to help you.
A percentile value allows you to see where an animal sits in the breed for each trait. This gives you more information than an EBV figure alone. Eg. If an animal sits in the 30th Percentile for 600D it means he’s in the Top 30% of the breed. Generally, the lower the percentile figure the better, except in the case of Mature Cow Weight where being the biggest isn’t always the best.
The 600D of this bull sits in the 30th Percentile, meaning he’s in the top 30% of the breed for this trait.
The IMF of this bull sits in the fifth Percentile, meaning he’s in the top 5% of the breed for this trait.
Want to buy a great heifer bull?
Follow these simple steps to pick the right bulls and bid with more confidence and less stress on sale day.
These tips will help you get the bull selection right for an improved calving, but good heifer management plays a key role. As a rule, genetics account for 40% and the environment accounts for the other 60%. At Trio Angus, we work hard to get the genetics right, it’s then up to you to control the environmental effects to the best of your ability. Ensuring your heifers are well grown by the end of the first trimester is vital.
Good genetics, combined with good management, is the key to a profitable and stress free calving season.
1
Look at the structure of the bull
The bull’s shoulders are an important aspect to check. Smooth shoulders promote an easy calving. The shoulders should be smooth against the rib cage. We find an easy way to assess this is to stand at the front of the bull and look at the top of his shoulder blades.
BULL A has less width at the top of the shoulder and at the point of the shoulder.
2
Assess the bull’s physical size
It’s important to think about the bull’s physical size. A heavy, mature bull may not be ideal for joining smaller heifers. We find yearling bulls work well over heifers, as they are similar size and reduce the risk of injury.
The Birth Weight EBV reflects the weight of the calf at birth, so it makes sense that a lighter calf is preferred. This means a lower Birth Weight EBV should be selected. Currently the breed average Birth Weight EBV is +4.1, so we suggest selecting a birth weight at or below this figure.
BULL A has the best Birth Weight EBV for calving ease (lower figure).
Note: Calving Ease EBVs are also a great tool, however most sale bulls do not have an EBV of high enough accuracy to be useful.
4 Look at the Gestation Length
The Gestation Length EBV is the number of days from conception to birth. Calves that are born a few days early are smaller. A negative Gestation Length EBV is ideal. Currently the breed average for Gestation Length EBV is -4.8, so any figure below this is good.
BULL A has the best Gestation Length EBV for calving ease (lower figure).
5 Take note of the pedigree
A bull’s pedigree can give an indication of how reliable his calving ease will be. Stacking multiple generations of calving ease provides more reliability, meaning less chance of a ‘throwback’ to larger calves. Look in each bull’s ‘Comments’ in the catalogue for insights.

Typical of the Qalcine sons – well-balanced, plenty of volume and good, slick hair type. One of the largest scrotal measurements of all the sale bulls and a high Scrotal Size EBV to match – a good indication of his genetic merit for important fertility traits.
