BULL SALE

LOCHABER, OXLEY HIGHWAY WALCHA

Welcome

2024 marks the 40th and final sale for the Tummel Hereford stud. The conclusion of the dispersal of Tummel Herefords will leave a hole in the industry for those who are chasing cattle that have explosive growth, structure and overall performance.

We love how this set of bulls can do well on a wide range of pastoral conditions. Depending on the level of nutrition and management, they will produce top-quality carcases ranging from heavy, marbled and fat, through to small, young and lightly finished.

This year the bulls are presented to the absolute peak of their genetic potential, which has been done on the back of a kinder season. In conjunction with this, the bulls for the first time present with all Genomic tests being completed. This includes poll testing, Genomic enhanced EBV’s and all genetic tests. This will allow you to purchase bulls with enhanced confidence that they are going to complete the job that is desired at purchase.

Genetically we see some exciting sire lines in Graham Byron, Lotus Quarterback and Flagstaff Klingon. They are backed up by proven sires in Cascade Anzac and Kylandee Packsaddle.

There are some super stud sire prospects available throughout the sale catalogue, a couple of my personal favourites are in the horns T228 who is an awesome Graham Byron son and U132 who is one of the most exciting horned sire prospects.

In the polled bulls T322 is a homozygous polled bull with some super impressive growth and carcase, and T344 who has one of the best combinations of data and phenotype to come out of Tummel in recent years. These bulls can add extra value to any program around Australia.

All bulls have had a full inspection by Nathan Kruidenier of Bovine Breeders prior to sale. All bulls are fully guaranteed for fertility. Our sale preparation has in mind the longevity of the bulls, so they have a long working life for the new owners. The bulls have finished on an awesome oats crop.

It is great sadness that this sale will conclude the stud and many this will mean a lot of different things. For some it will be the end of their opportunity to purchase world class Tummel genetics, or the end of a stud that promoted and supported the Hereford breed whole heartedly, or the end of an era for a family that was very supportive and entrenched in the Walcha community.

Whatever your memory of the Tummel Stud, we would love to see you at the final sale on the 23 July. If you would like to view the bulls before the sale, they will be available to view at our Open Day on 10 July or by appointment prior to the sale.

Sincerely,

History

Gordon Lisle was born in 1923, first son of Alicen and Colin Lisle of Loch Lomand, Wollun. In 1949 as a returned World War II veteran, Gordon drew a soldiers settlement block drafted from properties Europambela and Wallington on the eastern side of Walcha. As a nod to his Scottish heritage, Gordon named the property ‘Lochaber’, after a region in the Scottish Highlands. Gordon met local lass Olga Goodwin, and they were married in 1951. They had three children, two daughters Pauline and Susan, and Christopher – their only son – was born in 1956.

Gordon’s first purchases after taking ownership of Lochaber were 20 hereford cows from south of Walcha, and 200 merino ewes from his father. Tummel Hereford stud commenced in 1956, with cows comprising of Hammond Springs Marquise, Yarrandabbie Empress, Yarrandabbie Toga – both by Pridewood Develop (imported from the UK), Bexley Rainbow 27 by Bexley Demonstrator, Benama Princess 3, Bective Maple 33 and Bective Moonbeam. These females were joined with Karena Beau Page, whose Grand Sire was Ennisview Beau Superb –Junior Champion of Brisbane Show.

The sires who were used in the early days were Bexley Bombshell – by Rose Bargee (imported from the UK) and Tummel Bombshell 7, Karena Prince Daniel, Karena Imperial 151, Devon Court Musbury 71, Devon Court Chairman 120, Lowana Nuffield, Invernaion Vigorous, Emu Holes Crownsman 2, Lowanna Lion and Tummel Imperial 75.

Again, in a nod to Scotland, Gordon named the stud ‘Tummel’, after a lake in Scotland in the same region as Loch Lomand, his family’s named Wollun property. Gordon’s aim was to produce a herd for commercial farmers, with milking a top priority. Ease of calving, growth and muscle, along with eye pigmentation to reduce eye cancers was also a big consideration. Chris returned to the farm after completing his secondary and tertiary education in Queensland in the early 1970’s. Gordon and Chris expanded their landholding when they added part of Wilga West (renamed Garwil) in 1973, to the west of Walcha. In the late 1990’s, Gordon’s declining eyesight and mobility, left Chris to take a commanding role in the stud and family business.

In 1985 Gordon, Olga and Chris conducted their first on farm bull sale at Lochaber. After Gordon passed in 2010, Chris continued the same successful on-farm annual sire sales. This year will mark the 40th and final annual on farm sire sale, and 68 years since the commencement of Tummel Hereford stud.

Originally sires were sold at public multi-vendor sales, including Bonalbo, Kempsey and Glen Innes. They had great success both showing and selling bulls at these venues – in 1982 Tummel Nuffield 33 placed third at the Sydney Royal and also Supreme Champion of all Breeds at the Tamworth Show. Tummel Lion 9 was fourth at the Sydney Royal and second at Brisbane Ekka, then sold to a local grazier.

The first on farm sale on 27 August 1985 was in a purpose built shed with a sale ring, and conducted by Elders and Dalgetty Winchcombe. With an offering of 32 bulls, sires of sale bulls included Emu Holes Nigel 3, Tummel Jubilee 10 (owned by Strathleigh and Reedy Creek), South Bukalong Uxbridge, Emu Holes Gloaming 4, Tummel Lion 9, Tummel Imperial 65, Invernaion Wickham. The top sale price was $5,000 for Tummel Jubilant (sire Tummel Jubilee 10 and Dam Tummel Maple 26) to Allan Gillogally.

The second on farm sale in 1986 saw 30 stud and five herd bulls offered, with a top price of $5,500 for Tummel Flash, sold to the Hollis family.

1987 proved to be a memorable year for Tummel with the family again heading to the Sydney Royal Easter Show, where Tummel Proserpine won the under 24-month class and then sold for $44,000. He was taken home by the McEachern family of Ardno Hereford Stud, who have been credited as one of Australia’s most prominent Hereford studs (which was sold in 2015 after 78 years of breeding). Tummel Proserpine was an April 1985 drop, son of sire Merindoc Proserpine and dam Tummel Toga 82.

This trajectory of successful showing and selling of bulls continued in 1991 at the Sydney Royal Easter Show with Tummel James selling for $20,000 to Bingeberry Herefords, and Tummel Ventriloquist sold for $21,000.

Chris and Gordon were often bringing bulls and fresh genetics home from these shows too. In 1989 Robertville Courier was purchased for $14,000, in 1998 they purchased Injemira Extra Q405 for $10,000, both were purchased at Wodonga. The early 2000’s saw the purchase of Kaludah Jowl 2 at Wodonga, Advance Think Big purchased at Glen Innes and Alton Lindeman at South Boorook Hereford’s Sale.

Over the stud’s 68 year history, Chris, and Gordon before him were stalwarts of the Hereford industry. Chris was President of the New England Hereford Club in 1996 and Gordon was honoured with Life Membership in 2001 to the Australian Hereford Society. Gordon was invited to the annual general meeting of the society at Homebush Bay to accept his Life Membership badge.

Gordon, Olga and Chris made a great team, with Gordon and Chris running the farm and cattle breeding enterprise and Olga playing the role of bookkeeper, stud photographer, cook and general life administrator. Anyone working on the farm was always invited in for a hot lunch and a coffee. After the passing of Gordon, Olga and Chris continued this great teamwork until the untimely passing of Olga in 2011.

Chris introduced Poll Herefords into the stud in early 2000’s, realising the value of the poll’s genetics. Females were purchased from Oldfield, Debarry, Emu Hills, Warraba Park and Merriwa, along with a bull from Wantabadgery. With Gordon’s passing in 2010, Chris maintained the core values of the stud, but now used selected breeding lines using carcase weight data and BREEDPLAN figures, alongside running a commercial cattle operation turning off both feeder steers and 20-month old finished steers. >

Chris continued the same path as his father before him and carried on building the business and consistently improving on his herd’s genetics.

The 2015 sale, Chris offered 36 bulls, with a top of $21,000 for Tummel Ventriloquist J131, purchased by a repeat buyer. 2016 saw multiple top prices of $14,000, and 2017 saw 31 bulls offered with a top price for Tummel Ranch L108, sired by Yalgoo Ranch H108.

The 2021 sale saw 27 bulls offered and a top price $10,000 for Tummel Prophet Q096 to repeat buyers, with 90% of the bulls going to local bidders. The sires of sale bulls included Tummel Prophet (repurchased from Avonview Hereford Stud), Franco Lawson, Mawarra Calibre and Kyland Backpacker, and polled sires Grathlyn Landmark, Sevenbardot Gameday and Mawarra on Target. Chris added Silverstream N13 Pute Nascar and Bolong Quarterback Q013 into the herd’s gene pool.

Chris had success at Quirindi Show in 2022 with Tummel Payrise taking out Junior Champion Hereford. Lotus Redford R118 was purchased from Lotus Herefords and Amos Vale Investment R006 from Amos Vale Herefords. Both bulls were sourced for their heavy carcase weights.

In recent years, Chris added sires from studs both in NSW and Victoria, including Mawarra Herefords, Amos Vale, Glenholme Sherwood, Franco Herefords (now dispersed), Vielun Pastoral, Thornleigh Hereford and Lotus Herefords. In 2023 at the 40th annual on-farm sale, Chris offered 34 bulls and secured a top price $16,000 for Tummel Cash Up S043. Chris attended Guyra Show where Tummel Payrise S145 was Grand Champion Bull. Chris also attended Wodonga as a both a vendor and purchaser, sold Tummel Packsaddle to Strathleigh Herefords, and Tummel Power Town was second in a class of 15 bulls. Chris came home with the much-coveted

Grand Champion of Wodonga – Glendan Park Soprano for $45,000.

2024 marks the 68th and final year of the Tummel Hereford stud, with the passing of Chris in September 2023. The female herd are to be dispersed in February and the bulls are to be dispersed in July 2024 at the 40th annual and final on-farm sale at Lochaber.

The commitment and dedication Olga, Gordon and Chris have shown to their life’s work of breeding and selling Herefords certainly leaves an incredible legacy.

BREEDPLAN overview

BREEDPLAN is the current genetic evaluation system adopted by Herefords Australia, and is used locally and internationally for beef breeders.

The outcome of a BREEDPLAN analysis is Estimated Breeding Values (EBV’s) of recorded cattle for a range of traits.

EBV’s calculate an animal’s own performance, performance of any known relatives, the heritability of each trait and the relationship between different traits.

EBV’s express the difference between an individual animals genetic merit and the base population to which the animals is compared too.

As of October 2017, Herefords Australia has begun incorporating Genomic DNA profiles into the BREEDPLAN analysis, which has seen an improved level of genetic linkage of an individual animal to the base population of the Hereford BREEDPLAN herd. This is what is referred to Single Step.

HEREFORD PERCENTILE BANDS FOR 2022 BORN CALVES

EBVs explained

HEREFORD BREEDPLAN

Understanding the EBVs, Selection Indexes and Accuracy

An animal’s breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we will never know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. These estimates are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).

In the calculation of EBVs, the performance of individual animals within a contemporary group is directly compared to the average of other animals in that group. A contemporary group consists of animals of the same sex and age class within a herd, run under the same management conditions and treated equally. Indirect comparisons are made between animals reared in different contemporary groups, through the use of pedigree links between the groups.

EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait. They are shown as positive or negative differences between an individual animal’s genetics difference and the genetic base to which the animal is compared. For example, a bull with an EBV of +30kg for 400 Day Weight is estimated to have genetic merit 30kg above the breed base of 0kg. Since the breed base is set to an historical benchmark, the average EBVs of animals in each year drop has changed over time as a result of genetic progress within the breed.

The absolute value of any EBV is not critical, but rather the differences in EBVs between animals. Particular animals should be viewed as being “above or below breed average” for a particular trait. The breed average for the current two year old animals are reported with the selected animals’ EBVs.

Whilst EBVs provide the best basis for the comparison of the genetic merit of animals reared in different environments and management conditions, they can only be used to compare animals analysed within the same analysis. Consequently, Hereford BREEDPLAN EBVs cannot be validly compared with EBVs for any other breed.

EBVs are published for a range of traits covering fertility, calving ease, milking ability, growth and carcase merit. When using EBVs to assist in selection decisions it is important to achieve a balance between the different groups of traits and to place emphasis on those traits that are important to the particular herd, markets and environment. One of the advantages of having a comprehensive range of EBVs is that it is possible to avoid extremes in particular traits and select for animals with balanced overall performance.

CALVING EASE EBVS (%) are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.

CE % DIR = DIRECT CALVING EASE

The EBV for direct calving ease indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in purebred females calving at two years of age.

CE % DAUGHTERS = DAUGHTERS’

CALVING EASE

The EBV for daughters’ calving ease indicates how easily that sire’s daughters will calve at two years of age.

GESTATION LENGTH EBV (DAYS) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on AI and hand mating records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation length and therefore a tendency for easier calving and increased growth after birth.

BIRTH WEIGHT EBV (KG) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.

200 DAY GROWTH EBV (KG) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth to early ages.

400 DAY WEIGHT EBV (KG) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for yearling weight.

600 DAY WEIGHT EBV (KG) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.

MATURE COW WEIGHT EBV (KG) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for 200 days, adjusted to five years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at five years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV.

MILK EBV (KG) is an estimate of an animal’s milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter’s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200 day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her own milking ability.

SCROTAL SIZE EBV (CM) is calculated from the circumference of the scrotum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. This EBV is an estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny.

CARCASE WEIGHT EBV (KG) is based on abattoir carcase records and is an indicator of the genetic differences in carcase weight at the standard age of 650 days.

EYE MUSCLE AREA EBV (SQ CM) is calculated from measurements from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcase data, adjusted to a standard 300kg carcase. This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Sires with relatively higher EMA EBVs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcase weight than will sires with lower EMA EBVs.

FAT EBV (MM) are calculated from measurements of subcutaneous fat depth at the rib (from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcases) and are adjusted to a standard 300kg carcase. This EBV indicates the genetic difference in fat distribution on a standard 300kg carcase. Sires with a low, or negative, fat EBV are expected to produce leaner progeny at any particular carcase weight than will sires with higher EBVs.

RETAIL BEEF YIELD EBV (%) indicates genetic differences between animals for retail yield percentage in a standard 300kg carcase. Sires with larger EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases.

INTRAMUSCULAR FAT EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intramuscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.

He was the third highest scanning IMF bull in his contemporary and ranks in the top 30% for this trait on BREEDPLAN.

The highest scanning IMF bull in the entire catalogue with a raw scan of 7.1, this is a bull with plenty of softness and do-ability. He combines this with a well laid in shoulder and a smooth front end. Top 30% for gestation length, 400 and 600 day weights, and retail yield.

Thank you

On behalf of the extended family, we would like to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to everyone that helped our family following the sudden passing of Chris. We are so grateful for the love and support you have given our family.

We have been fortunate to receive so much assistance at ‘Lochaber’ with the stock, sorting, feeding, and all the work that has gone into preparations for the female dispersal sale. Your knowledge, advice and generosity with your time has been invaluable and is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your support of the Tummel Bull Sale. Please join us for a drink after.

Christopher Gordon Lisle –1956 – 2023

Christopher Gordon Lisle was born at Tamworth base hospital on the 14th October 1956. He tragically died from a horse accident on the property on the 24th September 2023 aged 66. He was the third child of Gordon and Olga Lisle, brother to sisters Pauline and Susan of ‘Lochaber’ Walcha.

Chris grew up on ‘Lochaber’ where Gordon and Olga began their Tummel Hereford Stud. They later purchased land west of Walcha which they named ‘Garwil’.

Schooling began at Walcha Central School for Chris. He later attended Scots College Warwick and then went on to study at Longreach Agricultural College in Queensland.

Tummel Hereford Stud was founded in 1956. Chris joined the team when he finished Ag College and later added Poll Herefords to the Stud. They sold bulls at Glen Innes, Bonalbo and Kempsey Bull Sales before having their first on property sale in 1986. In later years the stud featured at Glen Innes, Albury-Wodonga and Dubbo Show and Sales. Until recently Chris showed bulls at the Sydney Royal and sometimes Brisbane Ekka.

Chris had an incredible knowledge of the breeding history of every bull, cow and heifer in the stud. He prided himself on all his calves being reared their

own mothers without any supplementary feeding.

The focus for selection has been temperament, quality including size, the ability to milk and the elimination of eye cancer by selective breeding.

Visiting and supporting studs and sales was a highlight of each year. In the 1990’s Chris was President of the New England Hereford Club and generally supported all functions and attended meetings regularly as a member of the Hereford Society.

Overseas travel was prominent in Chris’ life with most trips centred around visits to Hereford studs and sales. As a result, he had friends and contacts from Canada, USA, New Zealand and Scandinavia.

Although Chris did not have a family of his own, he was a wonderful uncle and great uncle to his sister’s children and grandchildren. He was very fond of his friend’s children and was proud of all of their achievements. He was encouraged by young people who were interested in the land and particularly cattle.

Chris will be fondly remembered by his family, friends, connections in the Hereford cattle world and the local community of Walcha.
