Dear OCSI Families,
Thank you for being a part of our wonderful OCSI community! We are especially grateful to those who have re-enrolled for the next school year— your continued partnership allows us to grow and improve in meaningful ways.
As we look ahead, we are excited to share some key updates aligned with our school improvement goals of creating an inspiring campus, being an impactful community, and fostering intentional collaboration.
Inspiring Campus
We are thrilled to announce the completion of our new elementary playground, designed to provide a safe and engaging play experience for all students. In addition, we are working with a local company to plan a new multi-purpose center, which will house a cafeteria, chapel, and library, while also creating a secure, welcoming entrance to our school. Classroom improvements remain a priority, and we will continue updating furnishings and learning spaces to enhance the student experience.
Impactful Community
Our mission extends beyond our campus, and this year we have embraced opportunities to serve and connect. We recently hosted a College and Career Fair, welcoming universities and organizations from around the world to support not only OCSI students but also students across Okinawa. Additionally, our students continue to make a difference through service projects, including a toy drive, food drive, beach cleanups, and ESL outreach, demonstrating our commitment to serving others in Jesus’ name.
Intentional Collaboration
Our teachers and staff are dedicated to continuous growth to best support student learning. Faculty regularly engage in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), in-house PD sessions, online courses, and conferences— even visiting other schools to learn and share best practices. We believe that investing in our teachers and support staff leads to the best possible learning environment for our students and a stronger OCSI community.
Thank you for your continued trust and partnership. Your support enables us to move forward with these exciting improvements, and we look forward to all that God has in store for OCSI.
With gratitude,
HEADOFSCHOOL

In 2nd quarter of elementary, students are more comfortable with the routines of the classroom and teachers and students can go deeper into content. Students are engaging with the complete writing process by publishing their writing, showing their work on unit math tests, as well as projects and presentations to showcase their work in all subjects.
One highlight for November was three days of Thanksgiving fun:
On Monday, 11/25, each class decorated a Thanksgiving mural which was later hung up in the cafeteria.
On Tuesday, 11/26, Ms. Turner hid pumpkins around the school and students who found them could bring it to the office for a prize.
On Wednesday, 11/27, all classes celebrated Thanksgiving by eating pies which had been donated by parents together in the classroom.
All around it was a joyous time to remember all the things we can be thankful for and all the blessings God provides!
Ms Sarah Turner Elementary Principal
On 11/27, the 1st and 2nd graders celebrate Thanksgiving with Harvest Festival.
Each 1st and 2nd grade teacher had a different activity such as game, craft, and story, and the students visited each area to participate in the fun activity!
Service Opportunities
The Christmas season was the perfect time for OCSI students to give back to the community with some service opportunities.
The PreK and Kindergarten classes collected wrapped toys to give to orphans through HelpOki’s toy drive. They collected over 20 toys and helped bring joy to a child’s face!
The 1st-3rd graders participated in a food drive to collect canned and non-perishable food for the HelpOki Food Bank which helps the less fortunate in Okinawa and works to help end poverty in Okinawa. The students collected 4-5 large boxes of food!
Returning back from Christmas break, the Japanese classes had a variety of hands-on activities to celebrate the new year.
The beginning level students made sushi together in class and the intermediate and advanced students did shuji - Japanese calligraphy!

On December 12th, Grades 1-5 put on a fantastic Christmas musical entitled The Bethlehem Beat, directed by Ms. Tuzi.
This year’s musical featured a new 4th5th grade dance team (led by Mrs. Serjeant) in addition to the main cast (directed by Ms. Sorley). The voices of the 200+ students in the elementary choir soared like eagles throughout the grand concert hall.
The PreK and Kindergarten students sang and danced their best at their Christmas concert in the OCSI gym on December 18th. Through their songs, they showed that even the animals and all other creatures of the earth worship the Creator and His Son who was sent for us. A special thanks to Mr. Roe for sharing the story of Christmas and the teachers who brought the show together.

As winter settles in, the cooler weather and holiday spirit bring a sense of reflection and renewal This season is a great reminder of the importance of perseverance, community, and gratitude all values we strive to instill in our middle school students Whether it's through collaborative projects, class discussions, or serving others, we see students growing academically, socially, and spiritually each day
Each year, Mr. Harris’s 6th grade students participate in the Greek Olympics to close out their Greek unit. The students make posters, projects, skits, essays and numerous other hands-on projects to learn about Greek history and culture. It is a nice way to spend the day before Christmas break.
Building Number Sense Through Teamwork
In math class, students engage in a fastpaced, hands-on challenge that tasks them with highlighting a numerical sequence as a team. This interactive approach fosters a deeper understanding of number patterns, sharpens critical thinking, and strengthens collaboration skills, all while creating a fun, supportive environment for learning.

The Thanksgiving holiday is such a special time of the year to stop and reflect on what God has done in our lives. This year the middle school celebrated by eating some delicious pies in the Cathedral. As a part of the celebration the middle school homerooms took part in the Christmas Door competition. A lot of creativity was seen in the designs of the doors, and this year Mr. Silva's 8th grade Homeroom took this prize!
Mr. David Harris- Middle School Coordinator
To kick off fall break at OCSI, our student council (STUCO) worked tirelessly to organize a memorable celebration for high school students in grades 9–12. Weeks of planning by STUCO representatives from each class culminated in an exciting afternoon packed with activities. Highlights of the celebration included a piñata design competition, a spirited relay race between classes, and class parties featuring delicious pies generously donated by parents. Thanks to the participation of OCSI students, their families, and the dedicated efforts of STUCO members, this event created lasting memories for our high school community!

We encourage our high school students to always strive for excellence and put forth their best effort, whether in the classroom or beyond
This principle reflects the wisdom of Colossians 3:23, which reminds us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart...”
At OCSI, we are committed to nurturing not only the mind but also fostering growth in every area of life
Mr Dan Pallmann
High School Principal
Some OCSI students were able to participate in “SCORE” at OIST
We placed 2nd overall and had an honorable mention.
Thanks also to Dr Vardhini who puts in a lot of effort and her own time to provide these opportunities for our students.
Worship Night
With the busyness of December-- end of the year, midterm exams, etc., it can be easy to miss out on what Christmas is really about.
It was nice to take some time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas at the Worship Night on 12/6.
Several groups led us in music as others read the Christmas story from the Bible.
OIST Collaborations
We are blessed to have a top notch research institute a mere 20 minutes away. OIST has been very accommodating and generous in allowing our students to come and learn.
The Marine Biology class recently spent the day at OIST to learn about Plankton Research. It is one thing to read about research, while quite another to see it in action!
Japanese Cultre
Our Japanese language teachers are always looking for ways to share Japanese culture with their students.
Mrs. Metz recently brought her class to a nearby location to participate in cooking Japanese food.
A special thanks to Mrs. Kubo for hosting our students.

The secondary performing arts students had a successful concert program themed around the shepherds of Bethlehem under the direction of Ms. Tuzi. The high school music class students were challenged to perform as a 2-part choir and hand chime ensemble. The after school Soaring Sounds ensemble collaborated with one of OCSI’s distinguished ballerinas for the Nutcracker and even showcased the Okinawan sanshin and Chinese Pipa in Mr. Smith’s own arrangement for Hark The Herald Angels Sing. Finally, the new middle school and high school drama classes (under the direction of Mrs. Cloud) acted out three amusing scenes surrounding the angels, shepherds, and sheep in the fields of Bethlehem.
Ms. Emily Tuzi, Music Teacher
Congratulations to all those students who were nominated by their peers to be part of the royal court. Congratulations to Shonosuke and Bianca for being crowned Homecoming King and Queen
Let’sshowourschoolpride!
What an incredible week of school spirit we had in January. Let's carry this positive energy foward into the rest of the school year!
Mrs Jess Sartore College & Career Counselor
Getting back into the rhythm of school after winter break can be a challenge If you're struggling with motivation, consider ways to recharge effectively Keep your longterm goals in mind, and take the necessary steps today to move closer to them tomorrow Focus on progress over perfection
With the school year officially at the halfway point, this is a great time to step back and reflect What is working well for you? What changes need to be made?
In today’s rapidly changing world, being able to take inventory and pivot as needed is a vital skill for long-term success
Perhaps that means participating in a new sport or club, or maybe signing up for some more challenging courses It might mean stepping back from certain activities so you can devote more attention to the ones that are most important to you
There is no one-size-fits-all path to a successful high school career However, here are some things you can focus on to help you set yourself up for success during (and after) high school:
Get and stay organized: Keeping your schoolwork and calendar organized can help you stay on top of everything, so you can bring your best effort to every endeavor Being able to manage your time well is a skill that will benefit you for life Find a system that works for you and stick with it
Develop and maintain good study habits: Not everyone learns the same way Figure out your learning style and use it to your advantage GPA isn’t everything, but it’s still the factor most colleges consider most important when looking at a student’s application
Research: It’s never too early to start looking at colleges and careers that might be a good fit for you It’s also never too early to start looking for scholarships! It’s free to apply, and even small amounts can add up to big savings
Make the most of the opportunities given to you: Get involved in sports, clubs, and other activities Volunteer, get a job, gain experience Attend college prep events and webinars I’m here to offer counsel and resources, but it’s up to you as the student to utilize them
Ask for help: This ties into the last one, but the best students aren’t necessarily the ones who already know everything They’re the ones who are willing to learn and grow, and are not afraid to ask questions Don’t know how to stay organized? Don’t know what your learning style is? Don’t know where to begin researching colleges, careers, or scholarships? I’m here to help! Email jessicasartore@ocsi org with any questions you may have, or stop by my office any time I have candy
Mr. David Kim Athletic Director
OCSI ended the fall sports season with Varsity Girls Volleyball attending the Far East Division 2 Tournament at Yokota AB and select members of the Cross Country team attending the Asia Pacific Invitational (API) in Chiba While we didn’t make the podium, we’re proud of the Girls Volleyball team for their effort all season and for Cross Country’s personal records all around at the API! I’m thankful for these opportunities for the athletes to show off the culmination of their efforts
I always like to tell the students at the end of their seasons, that I’m proud of them for all their effort and choosing to take on a challenge that none of their peers did. I remind them of the adage that today “you do what other’s won’t so tomorrow you can do what others can’t.”
In winter sports, the Boys Basketball Team is 5-2 with one game and two tournaments left in the season! We have a young team this year with no seniors, but that hasn’t been a problem for second year Coach Grant Bartscher and Coach Andrew Hamline. I look forward to hearing about their experiences at their final tournament in Nagoya, where they’ll be competing primarily against other international schools--a first for the boys program in current memory.
Finally, Cheer has been amazing! I’ve sincerely been blown away by their level of performance this year! Thank you to Coach Dominique Johnson for stepping up this year and leading the Cheer Squad to building some amazing performances and supporting school spirit at the basketball games this past season!
Special thanks to the student body that has supported our teams the last couple seasons! Our athletes can’t do it without you! Hope to see you all on the field/track as we transition to the Spring!
Interested in Coaching?
We are looking for interested coaches for High School Soccer or Track & Field and coaches for Tennis as an afterschool activity. If you or someone you know is interested, please email athleticdirector@ocsi.org
Each year we ensure our students have an opportunity to participate in intentional service projects around the island During the 2nd quarter, our Grade 9 students exemplified the heart of service by participating in two meaningful projects that allowed them to share Christ’s love with the local community
Grade 9 1 partnered with Koza Baptist Church to support their ESL Christmas outreach The students joyfully shared the Christmas story, sang traditional carols, and engaged in English conversations with the ESL group It was a special opportunity to connect across cultures and remind others of the true meaning of Christmas
Meanwhile, Grade 9 2 served at Kadena Fellowship Church by giving the building a much-needed deep cleaning The students worked hard, moved all the furniture out to clean tables, chairs, and toys thoroughly before restoring the space to its original setup With everything cleaned and organized, the church was left refreshed and ready to welcome its congregation.
Both projects were a blessing to the community and a testament to the servant hearts of our students, who continue to grow in their faith through acts of love and kindness
The PTF would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the parent, teacher, student, and staff volunteers who contributed their time and effort into making the 2024 Christmas Market a success. Their dedication and hard work are truly appreciated. We would also like to thank all the families that attended. We hope you enjoyed the event and that it filled everyone with Christmas spirit.
Mrs. Anna Marie Farrier PTF President
Our total income of ¥598,826 is broken down as follows:
Raffle Tickets: ¥397,600 Flea Market: ¥105,050
Food Vendor: ¥79,176
Craft Vendor: ¥57,000
The generosity and compassion of the OCSI family and local community made it possible to raise funds for these charitable organizations: Yomitan Shakai Fukushi Kyogikai (¥119,765), Deaf Ministry International (¥119,765), and Help Oki (¥59,882).
We are excited to share that re-enrollment is strong for 2025–26, with over 90% of returning students continuing. Our new Veracross system made online payments seamless, thanks to your support. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation during this transition.
We have adjusted tuition and fees to sustain high-quality education and recognize dedicated staff. Rising costs, inflation, and facility improvements influenced these changes. Our Facility Fee helps maintain safe, modern spaces and supports building a new multi-purpose center with a cafeteria, chapel, and library.
With re-enrollment complete, admissions for 2025–26 are now open to new families. We look forward to welcoming students seeking a Christ-centered education that fosters academic excellence and personal growth. Our team is ready to guide you through the process of joining the OCSI community.
Mr Sosro Karsosoemo Business Director
We are excited to share that new playground equipment has been installed! The children are loving it, and it has brought so much joy to their breaks from the classroom. It’s great to see them enjoying the new space, which helps them stay active and have fun with their friends.
The plans for the new Multi-Purpose Center (MPC) are moving forward. As was shared in the Head-of-School letter, this building will include a bigger cafeteria, a new chapel, and a library for all grades. The MPC Committee is working hard to choose a meaningful name and themes that reflect our school’s values and history. We are excited about what this space will offer to our school community.
Emergency Preparedness
This winter, we conducted emergency response drills, some unannounced, to ensure everyone knows how to respond in case of an emergency. All students and teachers have done a fantastic job following the procedures calmly and quickly. Looking ahead, Kadena Police will provide additional training for staff on emergency response and offer bicycle safety lessons for students. These efforts help us stay prepared and keep our community safe.
Operations Commitment
These initiatives, along with the new playground and progress on the MPC building, reflect our commitment to creating a secure and supportive campus. We are grateful for your continued support as we prioritize the well-being of our school community.
