Ah, the holiday season — good tidings, cheer, entertaining and everything cosy. While the warm notes of pumpkin spice are already a distant memory, things are full steam ahead as we gear up for the most wonderful time of the year — entertaining friends and family.
In this issue of Reno+Decor, we’ll explore small-scale entertaining and all things to make your home feel warm and cosy. With capacity restrictions lifted on personal gatherings in most areas of the province, many of us will return to having intimate and small gatherings during the busiest time of the year.
Now that we’ve [sort of] adjusted to daylight savings time and the sun setting earlier, the chilly winter months leave many of us seeking out ways to bundle up in our favourite blankets and create spaces in our home that allow us to unwind and seek shelter from the cold. But why forfeit comfort in favour of design when you can have both? Turn to page 16 and read award-winning Calgary-based designer Louis DuncanHe’s recommendations on how to warm up your space with style.
Those of us who’ve always entertained in small spaces know a thing or two about making the most out of a tiny space. My partner and I have had to concentrate on getting creative and maximizing the most of our space when we have guests. Our kitchen table is compact and doesn’t impede foot traffic with its circular shape and placement
in our breakfast area. However, come the holiday season, out comes the leaf extension which allows us to seat six comfortably at the table with another four more at our abutting breakfast bar.
One of the secrets to hosting a successful gathering is to ensure you clearly identify spaces. Serving dishes should be kept off the table to maximize plate and elbow room; jackets and purses should find a temporary home in the closet rather than draped over the back of a chair or piled on the couch; and a designated spot to pour beverages should be kept as close to the fridge as possible. Another tip is to have a cleanup strategy in place. It’ll keep plates and glasses from piling up. Don’t be afraid to point out furtive recycling, compost or garbage bins for your guests. Practice a clean-as-you-go method while you’re prepping and cooking, and make sure your dishwasher is emptied and the sink is cleared—you’ll thank yourself later. With the colder months upon us, we all want to find ways to warm up our homes to make them the perfect places to rejuvenate and spend time with our loved ones. My home has always been my sanctuary, and the last few years of pandemic life have just further emphasized the importance. When trying to create the perfect inviting
and cozy ambience, focus on shifting the overall feeling rather than just the specific components of your rooms. This can be more challenging to do when working in a smaller space because the number of items we bring into the space needs to be thoughtful and curated to prevent things from feeling too cluttered and busy. Here are three main tips to consider when cozying up a home and even more so for a smaller space:
There are three main types of categories of light; ambient, task and decorative. Ambient lighting is more “general” lighting (e.g. pot lights, chandeliers, overhead lights). Task lights usually centre around the ability to do a “task” (e.g. table lamps, floor lamps, etc.) and decorative lighting has more of a visual focus (e.g. picture lights, wall sconces and
candlelight). In a smaller space, a mix of lighting is often overlooked as we tend to rely on overhead lighting. Just because you have a large chandelier in one area that dominates the room doesn’t mean you have to have it always turned on. Instead, opt for two table lamps and candlelight to create a calmer and softer ambience. Always bring in dimmer switches to create evening warmth.

line of thought here is to substitute as opposed to add, especially in smaller spaces. You have a certain amount of usual real estate for decorative and display items so be thoughtful with what you substitute in. Phase out your linen throw with a cozy one made of boucle or a faux fur for an immediate injection of a cabin vibe. Confidently swap out accent pillows and even rugs to shake things up. The goal is to create the largest amount of impact with the least number of “things”.
Accessorizing in a smaller space is more difficult than in a larger one.
Try and refrain from adding vases, candles and other accessories throughout the house. Instead, opt for purposeful vignettes and cohesive groupings to make an impact. If you’re not quite sure where to start, use groupings of three or five, with an emphasis on balance in scale and size. If you have a larger vase, add in a smaller floral arrangement and picture frames to add a personal sense of depth and richness. Symmetry can be beautiful if you’re working with the right scale. Why not re-create that same cosy and informal atmosphere when planning your next soirée?
Everyone knows parties somehow end up around the kitchen island, which is a great space for informal, relaxed get-togethers.
“The food can be set up beautifully on the island, and guests can pop over and fill their plates as they wish,” says Sarah Gallop, principal at Sarah Gallop Design Inc. “Decor is a key element here as well, and again with dishes of varying heights and colours and materials depending on the theme of the gathering. To avoid awkward back tracking, leave space between dishes and have a logical order to the placement of dishes, napkins, food and condiments.”
Couch parties are also pleasurable. However, the food offering is pretty important with this type of entertaining – nothing messy, just simple bite-sized foods that are not going to end up on someone’s lap.
Sometimes, says Gallop, “a coffee table can be very intimate yet comfortable, as the seating is usually much more lounge-like.”
When planning for your coffee table entertaining, Gallop suggests using serving dishes with varying heights to add visual interest, plus it is a good use of space — a vertical set-up takes up less real estate. This could be tiered
dishes, or dishes placed on something to elevate and vary the heights.
By mixing up your collection of dishware, you will bring instant charm and a playful look to the table that’s totally you. It’s also a great way to incorporate a pop of colour.
“Reflective surfaces, such as glazed dishes, glassware, crystal and metals can reflect the light as well and greatly enhance the mood,” says Gallop, adding a plate that offers a wine glass holder saves extra space. “In addition, the use of lights helps, too. Think small strings of battery-operated LED lights in glassware, or around dishes, or candles of variable heights — these always boost the ambience,” says Gallop.
For continuity with whatever the central theme is, consider all pieces – serving dishes, eating dishes, glassware, decor, and napkins – and don’t forget to be a little whimsical.

Do you drink according to your mood, the weather or what food you’re pairing with the wine? Your wine preferences may change based on your mood, the occasion, the time of year or what you’re preparing for the next meal. Give your style words and feelings so that you can pinpoint exactly what wine you want to try.
DON’T JUDGE A WINE BY THE LABEL OR PRICE
Flashy art or a higher price tag can lead you to believe you are purchasing quality wine. Be mindful this is not always the case. Read the labels (both front and back). You can even research the producer for added information as you can learn more about the product and the producer’s work. A nice wine label or bottle on sale will get you once but it might not get you again. There are great wines at great prices and also great wines with great labels, but judging just on looks or price is not the way to buy wine.

Entertaining season is upon us again after a long moratorium on gatherings. Curated affairs are the trending ticket this party season. With every detail carefully thought out and nothing overlooked, your guests will enjoy a “tended to” vibe, while accommodating any conscious or sub-conscious social-distancing comfort zones that still linger. Let’s break down this trend.
A party where you’re not at ease is one that you’ll be leaving shortly. Your guests should feel comfortable, with plenty of room to sit, stand and manoeuvre. How many guests do you anticipate showing up? What
activities will they be engaging in, and where? Then, design “stations” to accommodate your plan. Typical party stations include food, bar and lounging, but your list may also include something specific, such as a games zone, or wine tasting area. It’s also a nice touch to have a “welcome zone” by the entrance/exit, with a coat rack, a place for shoes and, of course, hand sanitizer.
Movable furniture is my go-to when designing any living space. From a practicality perspective, these pieces are worth their weight in gold. And the great news is, modern furniture designers are creating pieces that maximize multi-function, space efficiency and aesthetics. Think coffee tables that rise into dining tables, storage benches and ottomans that double as seating, and bar carts on wheels that have a million and one different uses at this time of year. When prepping your space for an intimate party, style matters. Though your party stations are temporary, ensure each of them adds aesthetic
value to your space. Will it look pleasing? Attract guests? Aside from seating and surfaces, or anything else essential to that activity, ensure each station has a focal point, such as a piece of art or centrepiece, and dedicated lighting.
In the dining area, opt for versatility and ease, with themed, self-serve food stations. This set-up accommodates more people (bonus if you have a small space) while allowing guests to choose what they eat, when and where. Just ensure you have plenty of extra seating throughout your entertaining areas. Consider individualizing single portions in disposable dinnerware, ideally recyclable or compostable. It’s more sanitary, and this grab-and-go tactic leaves time for the hosts to mingle with guests.
The bar is the focal point of many parties, so this space should be stocked, and styled. Supply the bar with the standard selection of beverages and glassware, being mindful of your guests’ preferences. Prepare what you can ahead of time, such as mixes and garnishes. Of course, always have a selection of alcohol-free options for the nondrinkers and designated drivers. Finish the bar with some themed or seasonal decor and lighting.
Party season this year is all about being a gracious host, and creating a curated affair, from the food and drinks to the music wafting through the speakers. What’s the vibe you’re aiming to achieve, and how will you evoke that mood? I think you’ll find that a little forethought will go a long way.

Modern elements and cosy details turn this cabin into a special retreat
This cosy yet contemporary chalet in Blue Mountain, Collingwood, serves as a recreational retreat for its owners, a haven to enjoy the great outdoors and host family and friends. To match the homeowners’ chic, laid-back lifestyle, I chose a modern farmhouse aesthetic that embraces the mountain vibe, the home’s architectural attributes and its structural limitations.
Despite its many transformative elements (new floors, a fireplace, mudroom, updated entrance,
new panelling, staircase, interior doors, and a lot of paint), the home maintains a distinctive cabin feel highlighted by a central fireplace. On approaching this project, my original inclination was to move the fireplace. However, on discovering the home’s structural limitations, I opted to keep it in its original position, streamlining and modernizing the existing traditional wood-burning stove with a sleek, four-sided gas unit. What started as a design challenge became a new focal point to be enjoyed from every angle in the vast space,
which was now perfectly divided, yet connected.
The dining area proved to be a fun collaboration with my clients, who chose to feature a Twiggy painting that adds a pop of colour and contemporary flair to the other side of the fireplace.
To bring drama and dimension to this open-concept area, I painted the east and west gable ends in a dark, warm grey colour. I repeated this same contrasting hue on all interior doors to perfectly match the smoky, stained hardwood floors and complement the pickled pine ceilings.
A mudroom finishes off the main level and adds a practical addition to the space – complete with a boot dryer closet for winter recreation and organized cubbies for stylish storage.
The upper landing area houses a small office and sitting area, with a hallway leading to the principal sleeping area.
The main bedroom features a wood slab headboard from CB2 – an instant
focal point of the space. On the main floor, the guest bedrooms were designed to maximize sleeping. Twinover-queen bunk beds were placed against the wall and a few windows, featuring light and airy metal frames that don’t feel visually heavy in the space. The other bedroom boasts a wall-to-wall headboard that allows the twin beds to be pushed together
to create a king-sized bed, if and when desired.
In the end, the variations of warm greys and contrasting colours throughout the chalet, plus the addition of cosy furniture pieces, work well to create a warm and welcoming space everywhere you go. And the perfect place to entertain friends and family.

The year 2021 was certainly an interesting one in interior design. I saw a focus on balance and functionality, as we spent more time in our homes. In 2022, things are going to change. Off the heels of Milan Design Week, exhibitions showcased refined spaces that were skillfully combined with bold colours and geometric forms. In effect, we anticipate 2022 trends to dial into personality and expect to see inspiring spaces that honor the fullness of living, telling a story of sustainability and nostalgia, mixed with an artful blend of colour choices and positivity about the future. Here are my top four trends for the new year.
This influence began in 2020 and is not slowing. Furniture with curvy rounded silhouettes, slender frames and chunky profiles will continue to be popular through this year.
Natural materials, organic textures, and a blend of rich wood, marble, glass and metal combinations are taking centre stage in furniture and decor collections. Rattan and wicker trends continue to thrive, giving a more relaxed and airy feel in our interiors.
Reminiscent of the 1970s-90s post-modern design, is a revival of the original style. The bold shapes, colours and pop art that were favoured then have now become muted and softer. You could call “Big White” a big departure from your typical chalet design. This sprawling 3,110-sq.-ft. mountain home is bright and spacious, framing brilliant views outside and featuring a cozy Scandinavian style inside. We aimed for a sophisticated, style-forward space evocative of a great holiday that reflected the home’s breathtaking surroundings and the homeowners’ personal style. Here’s how we achieved the look.
We designed this home’s interior for a family that lives up at the ski hill year-round. They were partial to Scandinavian design, which emphasizes utility and simplicity, and is commonly touted for its use of natural light, blond woods, minimalistic style and hygge – the Danish word for finding
comfort, warmth and pleasure. This wasn’t a stretch for our design firm, with many of our past projects focusing on natural elements influenced by the environment around us.
We achieved this vibe by blending new, classic and modern styles, and layering in organic materials and fabrics throughout the home. The light, neutral colour palette of white and muted beige was warmed up by introducing caramel and ochre hues.
The living room features a striking double-height ceiling and large picture windows that bring in a lot of natural light year-round and frame the seasonal views. We maximized the ever-changing scenery by ensuring open sightlines throughout the home. The fireplace is a fitting focal point and natural gathering place for family and friends.
The staircase is a punctuation point in the space, streamlined and modern in style, and featuring matte warm-black stringers and railings and “floating” treads that let natural light and views pour through freely.
We balanced the home’s bright clean lines and strong architecture with plenty of textural elements and organic materials throughout. Bringing in these natural, raw elements gave the home an impressive air, all while remaining casual, comfortable and inviting.
We placed a focus on creating a functional and durable kitchen to meet this health-conscious family’s needs and busy lifestyle. The oak cabinets boast a modern, cleanlined aesthetic in keeping with the home’s overall style and neutral colour palette.
At the heart of the kitchen, the island was done in dark hickory to add visual contrast to the space and finished with a waterfall countertop in Caesarstone’s “Fresh Concrete” finish.
Textural elements are a great way to offset clean lines and minimal colour palette that’s characteristic of the Scandinavian aesthetic. Even in the absence of colour, you can achieve a remarkable tactile experience through rugs, pillows and throws, upholstery, bedding and wall coverings. Explore a variety of nature-inspired materials such as wool, sheepskin and linen to add softness and visual interest.

e have all heard the expression “first impressions matter.” If your home’s curb appeal makes a great first impression, everyone will want to see what’s inside. Walkways, landscaping, and other eye-catching design elements
should all work together to create an enticing ambience.
“Your entryway sets the tone for the rest of your home… it should be warm, inviting and welcoming, offering a glimpse of your personality and style,” says Paul Sangha, principal at Paul Sangha Creative.
The best entryways blend seamlessly with a house, no matter its style, making it look like the hardscapes and plantings have always been there.
The key to an elegant entryway is in the design process. For a seamless transition between the exterior and the interior, go for naturally beautiful
textures, elements, colours, patterns and shapes that reflect the inside.
“It’s all in the detail. Small features such as area rugs, a welcome mat, cozy throws and cushions for your outdoor furniture are ideal ways to add texture and interest,” says the seasoned landscape architect.
Design masses of plants, such as grasses or shrubs, to create the foundation for the walkway. Then add repeating elements, like a particular tree species or stone paving pattern or shape … to establish strong, architectural lines.
Paul Sangha’s four easy ways to enhance your front entry for an inviting first impression.
Lighting has the power to enhance the setting. Selecting good outdoor lighting, such as wall scones, string lights or lanterns, provides warmth
and ambience. Fixtures can add accent lighting to trees or the house or can illuminate a walking path.
In addition, symmetry is not only pleasing to the eye, it’s also the simplest to position. Symmetrical arrangements of light fixtures boost curb appeal.
“People don’t realize that light becomes your paintbrush at night,” says Sangha. “Soft, ambient lighting
captures the beautiful elements of your entryway. However, don’t overlight, as it becomes more imposing rather than welcoming.”
You can make a huge impact with a number of planters arranged
together in a vignette. For example, a collection of terracotta pots looks striking. However, Sangha cautions against placing too many in one spot as it can make it difficult to negotiate getting to and from the front door. Sometimes, just one pot bursting with colour is enough to create that “wow” factor.
If your entryway is small, consider hanging baskets.
Look for Instagram-worthy baskets and colours in relation to the exterior home materials and colour palette to create a beautiful and artful arrangement.
Greet guests with furniture that beckons visitors inside. Rocking chairs, beautiful antique benches or sculptural and/or colourful furniture pieces are often a calling card for visitors. Even a small chair or a small table on your porch can serve as a resting place between outside and inside and boost your curb appeal.
Stone paths lined with greenery, pebbles or lantern lighting welcome guests as they make their way from the sidewalk to the front door.
With today’s contemporary architecture, Sangha usually uses a simple grey or charcoal grey palette for paving. However, he and his team are seeing a growing move towards “the wine country look; open gravel walkways with concrete pavers or stone elements.”

The Coast Goods is a little neighbourhood home decor and giftware shop tucked away on Victoria Drive in East Vancouver. The sweet boutique features a curated collection of independent artisans and ethically made goods.
Proprietor Tanya McLean (owner and creative director of mango design co.) has been dreaming and sketching up shop ideas for the last few decades, since she was 18 and first set foot in the homewares section of Country Road Australia. While there is a strong focus on local at The Coast Goods, especially in its collection of pottery, weaving, artwork, apothecary and self-care brands, there are also small-batch artisans from across Canada, the U.S., and Europe, as well as brands ethically produced elsewhere. These latter products aim to provide a selection of goods accessible to every budget. In the New Year, it is McLean’s aim to start working with artisans to create her own line of inhouse products for The Coast Goods.
The last 18 months creating and maintaining the shop has been a ton of work, but a refreshing break
from the stressful world of singlefamily home renovations. It likely wouldn’t have happened without the pandemic, and couldn’t have happened without the love and support of community, friends and family… and especially her daughter, Hannah, who has had a hand in everything from curating goods, painting floors and establishing the POS system to branding, graphic design and web-building and working when she’s not studying. So much heart in this little shop!
