WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RENTAL

Whether it’s your first apartment or your 10th, you’re going to want to find the home that best suits your needs. While looking for a new apartment, use this handy checklist to make sure you’ve covered all your bases.

THE RENTAL UNIT

• Is there a storage place for extra belongings such as bikes, luggage, etc.? Who has access to this place?

• Where is the closest bus stop?

• Is the apartment near services that are used regularly? (groceries, bank, fitness)

• Is the rental unit clean? Who shovels the snow and cuts the grass? Who supplies the equipment (shovels, lawn mower)?

• Where can vehicles be parked? Is there good lighting outside and in the parking lot?

• How quiet or noisy is the rental unit during the evening for studying or sleeping?

• Are there laundry facilities? Is there a schedule for use? Is there a cost? Where is the closest laundromat?

• Does the building have Internet service, or can it be installed?

FINANCES

• How much is the rent?

• Is a security deposit required? What is the amount?

• Does the rent include utilities: Heat, water, electricity, cable or Internet?

• Will a utility hook-up charge be extra?

• Will parking cost extra? What is the amount?

• Who has to pay for repairs — big ones and small ones?

AVOID ROOMMATE MISUNDERSTANDINGS

• Who will sign the residential tenancy agreement (lease)? It’s best that all parties be named on it.

• What will happen if one person needs to move out before the end of the lease?

• How will costs be shared and bills paid?

• How will problems be resolved?

QUESTIONS AND CONSIDERATIONS

• Is the lease for a fixed amount of time or month-to-month?

• When and where will the rent be paid? What happens if it is late? Ask for receipts for any payments.

• Who do you contact if there is a problem?

• Have you arranged for tenants’ insurance?

• Are sublets okay? What about a roommate?

• Are pets allowed? Is a deposit required?

• Is smoking allowed?

• How long can guests stay?

• Are you able to decorate your unit? What is the policy about push pins and hammering nails in the walls?

• When and where are notices delivered when it’s time to move out?

• When will the inspection report be done.

It’s always a good idea to keep copies of documents related to your rental unit, including the tenancy agreement, inspection report and receipts. Asking the right questions and considering the answers before you sign on the dotted line will help you find a rental unit that best suits your needs and lifestyle.

Get a hotelstyle look

at home

Do you dream of waking up in a luxurious hotel room surrounded by elegant decor and plush linens? Don’t wait for your next getaway. Instead, transform your bedroom with these easy tweaks, so every morning feels like you’re on vacation.

Start with the bed

Your bed is the cornerstone of a restful and luxurious sleep experience. To truly elevate your bedroom to hotel-level comfort, make sure you invest in a highquality bed that feels just as good as it looks.

A comfortable mattress is vital for a good night’s sleep. Consider the firmness and support that you prefer, as well as the materials used. Memory foam, latex, and innerspring mattresses are popular choices, and these each come with their own unique benefits.

Soft, luxurious pillows are also essential for a restful sleep. Make sure you choose pillows that support your head and neck and provide the right amount of cushioning. Experiment with different fillers such as feathers, down, or memory foam, to suit your needs.

Indulge in high-quality linens. Choose thread counts of at least 300 – try Egyptian cotton or bamboo – to ensure softness and durability.

For an inviting look, add a duvet or comforter for warmth, and throw pillows for texture and visual appeal. Always keep your bed neatly made. Tuck in the sheets, fluff the pillows, and arrange the throw pillows in a pleasing way.

Create a serene ambience

Choose a calming colour palette. Soft hues such as blue, green, or grey are excellent choices, as they can evoke feelings of peace and tranquility. Incorporate some natural elements. Plants can add a little bit of life and colour, while wooden accents help to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Consider adding a houseplant, a small tree, or a wooden headboard to your space.

Soft lighting is essential, such as a bedside lamp or floor lamp. Warm-toned bulbs will add to the overall comfy hotel aesthetic.

Declutter and organize

A cluttered bedroom can quickly disrupt a peaceful hotel ambience, creating visual chaos, mental stress, and even physical discomfort. It’s essential to declutter and organize your belongings.

Go through your things and get rid of anything you no longer need

or use. Donate anything in good condition, sell things that have value, and discard items you don’t use. Don’t be afraid to let go of things that are holding you back. Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to organize your belongings. Use baskets, containers and drawers to keep things tidy. Add labels to make it easier to find what you need when you need it. Create a designated area for clothes, shoes, books and electronics. A clean and organized bedroom can help you feel more relaxed, focused, and productive.

Pay attention to the details

It’s the little details that can truly elevate your space to hotel-level luxury. Invest in high-quality towels and bathrobes to add a touch of luxury to your bathroom. Choose colours and materials that complement the overall aesthetic of your space.

Create a spa-like atmosphere by adding a small tray with scented candles or essential oils and add a decorative touch to your bedside table with a small vase of flowers, a personalized stack of books or a piece of artwork.

By focusing on comfort, ambience and personalization, you can turn your bedroom into a sanctuary of rest and rejuvenation.

Decor dreams

Tips on how to shop like a pro

Decorating your home should be a deeply personal journey, one that reflects not just trends, but your unique story and lifestyle. Each piece you choose should feel authentic to who you are and how you live, whether it’s a timeless sofa or a bold statement light fixture. Shopping for items to elevate your home can feel overwhelming without the

right approach. Whether you’re a seasoned decorator or just starting, it all comes down to strategy. If you are looking for a seasonal refresh, read on for “shop like a pro” tips to help you navigate the process and decorate a space that truly speaks to you.

Define your style

Before you begin, take a moment to define your personal style. Is it modern, rustic or minimalist? Understanding your style is crucial to creating a cohesive look.

Pro tip: Create a vision board of styles, textures and items that resonate with you to guide your decisions and avoid impulse buys that don’t fit your aesthetic.

Set a realistic budget

Know how much money you can spend. This is essential when shopping for home decor. Furniture and accessories can vary widely in price, so put aside a sum for each category. Prioritize spending on key items that will last and consider using more affordable options for accessories that can be swapped out over time.

Invest in timeless pieces

Look for classic designs such as a well-made leather sofa or an elegant dining table that can adapt to various fashions and trends over time. Investing in high-quality pieces ensures your home stays stylish for years to come.

Pro tip: Focus on craftsmanship and versatility. Neutral-coloured pieces can be updated with different accessories to reflect changing tastes and seasons without needing a complete overhaul.

Mix high- and low-end items

For a professional look to home decor, mix expensive statement pieces with more affordable finds. Splurge on one or two key items, such as a designer armchair, while balancing your space with budget-friendly accessories such as pillows or accessories

Measure your space and plan ahead

Be mindful of the size of your furniture and the flow of traffic in a room. Always measure your space carefully to avoid buying furniture that will overwhelm it. Pro tip: Bring a tape measure with you when shopping for large furniture. If you’re shopping online, check the product dimensions and compare them with your available space. Don’t forget to measure doorways to ensure your new piece fits through the threshold.

Sofa shopping

Your couch is often the centrepiece of a living room, so getting it right is crucial. Consider the size of the room. Ensure the sofa fits comfortably in scale and traffic flow. Think about the upholstery that works best for your lifestyle. Leather or microfibre is great for easy cleaning, while linen or velvet offers a luxurious touch but requires more maintenance. Pro tip: Test a couch thoroughly before purchasing. Sit on it for extended periods to ensure comfort. Pay attention to cushion firmness and choose a piece with removable cushions for better wear and maintenance.

Quality over quantity

Focus on fewer, high-quality pieces that will stand the test of time. Examine the craftsmanship— materials, stitching and finishes. Well-made pieces elevate the look of your home and add style to a space

Pro tip: If possible, invest in custom-made pieces that are tailored to your needs and preferences. Bespoke items

often add a unique touch to your home.

Don’t overcrowd a space

Less is often more in home decor. Avoid cramming too many items into a room. Allow each piece to breathe and create a balanced layout that feels open and welcoming.

Pro Tip: Experiment with furniture placement before making a purchase. Move items around to give you a fresh perspective on how they interact within the space.

Care and intention

Shopping for home decor items can be a rewarding experience when you approach it thoughtfully. By staying true to your style, making strategic investments and embracing a mix of quality and personality, you’ll curate a space that’s functional and beautiful. The key is to remain patient, plan ahead and trust your instincts—because a beautifully designed home doesn’t happen overnight, it evolves with care and intention.

ADVICE | ORGANIZED LIVING

TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

HELLEN BUTTIGIEG

Sometimes, we get so bogged down with all the things on our “to-do” list that we forget to take time for ourselves. Here are some tips to help simplify your life.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT.

We have become a society of multitaskers, but in an effort to be more efficient, we have robbed ourselves of the pure pleasure that comes from performing simple tasks. Next time you wash dishes, fold laundry or set the table, focus only on the task at hand. Engage your senses. Notice the fresh smell of clean laundry, the rainbow colours in the soap bubbles, the beauty of a table set with care (candles, flowers and cloth napkins). You’ll feel less frazzled and more peaceful.

LET GO OF THE “SHOULDS”

Next time you catch yourself thinking guilt-inducing thoughts like, “I should go to the gym” or “I have to wash the windows,” shift your perspective. Find a way to make the task more enjoyable so you can replace the “should” and “have to” with “like to,” “want to” or “could.” Re-framing your thoughts in this manner puts you in control because you are deciding to do the task out of desire, not criticism. Another option is to re-evaluate the task to see if it really is a necessity or if you can drop it from your “to-do” list altogether.

PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE

Life has a way of flowing effortlessly when we put

ourselves out there. If there’s something you’ve been wanting in your life, take one small action toward it and notice how other things fall into place. It could be a simple phone call you’ve been putting off, a book you’ve been meaning to read or a website you’ve wanted to visit. Do it now and have faith in the power of taking that first step.

TIE UP LOOSE END

Regularly schedule one hour a week to devote to tying up loose ends. These little “to-dos” take less time to complete than you think and yet, left undone, eat away at you, draining your energy and clouding your mind. If you finish in less than an hour, use the extra time to reward yourself with a special indulgence.

ELIMINATE CATALOGUE CLUTTER AND ENJOY MENTAL FREEDOM

Are catalogues piling up on every flat surface in your office? If you’ve had them for more than three months and still haven’t read them, it’s time to take an honest look at whether they are adding value or complicating your life. Go online and remove your name from catalogues you don’t read, and cancel magazine subscriptions that clutter your life, drain your energy and rob you of peace of mind. You can always purchase the odd magazine or two when you have some extra time to devote to reading.

MAKE BILL PAYING EASIER BY SYNCHRONIZING DUE DATES

Paying bills can be time consuming and difficult to keep track of, especially if they are

due at various times throughout the month. Consider calling all your creditors and having the due dates on your monthly bills changed to either the 1st or the 15th of the month. Put a reminder on your calendar to ensure that they’re paid on time. Consolidating tasks saves time and mental energy.

CREATE KITS TO MAKE LIFE EASIER

Items that are used together should be stored together to make tasks easier and save you time. Store all your carwash supplies in one bin; your gardening supplies in another. Imagine how much easier it will be to wrap gifts when your gift bags, cards, scissors, bows, tape and pen are all stored together.
