design trends

outdoorsliving it up

If the lockdowns of the past years taught us anything, it is that we need to love where we live. If you must spend all the time in your home, it’s best that your home answers all your wants and needs. And an inviting, relaxing private outdoor space is crucial in this pursuit.

The patio, the backyard deck, the rooftop terrace – anywhere where you can enjoy the outdoors

in the privacy of your home – have become essential not only during the lockdowns but in our daily lives.

Whether one lives in a townhome with a limited yard, a condo with just patio space, or an estate home with an expansive outdoor area – what matters is how one approaches its design.

Today, the private outdoor space has become an extension of the living room, with lots of seating arrangements and multi-functional tables.

It can also be outfitted with an outdoor fireplace or some other heating appliance to keep guests warm during the cooler months, a barbecue is integral for many chefsin-the-making, and even a hot tub if space (and budget) allows. It’s the best place for entertaining lots of guests – especially when keeping a safe distance is important to you.

R+D Alberta spoke with Julian Riley, co-owner of Calgary’s Maria Tomas, Indoor & Outdoor Living, and an expert at designing private outdoor living spaces. He gives us some expert tips in coming up with the best outdoor living room environment for today’s needs.

According to Riley, it doesn’t matter where your outdoor space is, what matters is what you intend to do in that space.

“For us at Maria Tomas, Indoor & Outdoor Living, we are seeking the ‘Right Solution’ for our clients. First and foremost, one needs to determine how they are going to use the space. Lounging? Dining? Sun or shade? A combination of all? How many people? Space limitations, etc.”

Riley says Maria Tomas prides itself for “functional and stylish furniture

layout that allows a seamless transition to life outdoors when the summer season arrives.”

He is keen on options that will perform “double duty,” so to speak. This includes lounging sofa/chairs, that also act as a chaise so owners can bask under the sun. “Some lounging seating is high enough to also act as dining height options,” he says.

“Next would be appropriate scale and quantity of potential seating. Its more about the right solution for whatever space one has. Followed by ease of care of materials used.”

Riley says most of what customers look for these days is comfort in outdoor living. “Comfort is the number one request of clients. This usually means ‘plusher’ seating. Sofas. chairs, motion furniture (rockers, etc.) and multi-functional pieces - sofas that can turn into a chaise, for example. Second is ease of care. Cushions require more work. Lounging is generally more popular than dining. Our cooler evenings make eating outdoors difficult. and if you don’t have room for both, comfortable lounging usually wins out.”

Riley also recommends slingbased outdoor furniture. “Sling-based is easiest to care for and can be fairly comfortable.”

He also favours aluminum frames over wood for ease of care and maintenance. “Resin/vinyl wickers have evolved over the years and are generally no longer the thin brittle ribbon strips woven flat. It is still holding its own with these style/ quality advancements.”

But he says the hottest trend these days may be the rope-style outdoor furniture. “Rope styles are becoming the hottest, most popular trend these days. Available in many styles, shapes and colours. Low slung, Contemporary euro styled outdoor.”

Maria Tomas is a full service, brick-and-mortar store in Calgary with custom indoor and outdoor furnishings, paint, wallpaper, rugs, accessories and more. It has everything needed to furnish the home inside and out in its over 7,000 square feet design centre.

“We are not a big box store that relies on off-shore made, container-stocked patio set kind of store, and we aim for higher end and very customizable outdoor products,” Riley says.

expert tip for Outdoor Living Design

Julian Riley of Maria Tomas has some advice for designing the outdoor area.

1. First is how the space is envisioned to be used and for how many people.

2. Set a Realistic Budget of how much you want to spend. Quantity versus quality. Longevity of the product. Made in North America or Imported? You get what you pay for.

3. Realistic timing expectations. Today or tomorrow? Supply chain issues will continue, leading to shortages and huge Inflationary impacts for I would estimate another 3-5 years.

4. Comfort level and ease-of-care/ maintenance of the products. Cushioned or not?

5. Educate yourself. Go shopping, so to speak. Sit, feel, touch and ask questions, understand the difference in materials and quality. What’s right for you? Google!

Summer art deco:

the miami beach decor edit

Oseason has arrived, and our homes are the of any

cean views, vibrant culture, and striking design details are just a few of the reasons why Miami Beach continues to top travellers’ mustvisit lists. Known for its unique Art Deco architecture, it’s certainly easy to get swept into a daydream when scrolling through images of this iconic destination. If you can’t make the trip, you’re in luck – patio season has arrived, and our homes are the perfect canvas for a summer decor revamp that’s inspired by the gorgeous sights and rich history of this eclectic beach city. Adding a dash of Miami Beach style to any space will instantly bring a cool summertime mood to your home. Where this look adds an extra punch of excitement is when it’s applied to a patio or in transitional spaces that lead to the outdoors. Why you’ll love this design trend? It effortlessly delivers a beachy aesthetic with modern and upscale vibes for a truly unique visual experience. The result is bright, fun, and oh-so-sophisticated. Create this summer-style edit by exploring geometric designs and gilded details that combine with natural textures for an unexpected, yet comfortable, feel. Add eye-catching furniture with strong silhouettes to your space and bring in accessories that give a perfect pop of colour (hello, pink!). It’s a look that’s smart, playful, and pulls from nature with energetic tones and fabulous prints. Fruity cocktails and neon signs are optional – but highly recommended.

WINNING WINDOW’S

Are you contemplating an update on your home’s windows this year? You may be surprised to learn that replacing your dated windows is a good investment that offers a strong return on what you spend. Not only will you increase the curb appeal of your home but replacing your windows with energyefficient ones can reduce your energy costs, too.

As a trusted brand in the Canadian building products industry, JELDWEN is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of reliable windows and doors. JELD-WEN’S new Northern Tri-Pane Collection boasts some serious performance benefits. Here is a breakdown of what makes these windows stand out from the rest.

Did you know? Tri-pane windows from JELD-WEN are designed with more robust frames for increased durability.

SUPERIOR EFFICIENCY

The exterior pane insulates the interior panes, which helps reduce home heating and cooling costs.

2 3

ENHANCED HOME COMFORT

The extra air space between each pane acts as a second layer of insulation. The interior panes reduce radiant heat and condensation, allowing for more cold-weather humidity and eliminating dry, winter air.

EXTERIOR NOISE REDUCTION

The interior panes reduce exterior noise and increase interior noise attenuation, creating a quieter, healthier environment.

For more information visit keepoutsideout.com

TRI-PANE versus DUAL PANE

Why tri-pane windows outperform dual pane:

33 per cent more low E coating means superior UV resiliency.

50 per cent more insulated air space means reduced condensation and increased efficiency.

50 per cent more glass-fill significantly increases thermal performance.

Every Northern Tri-Pane Collection window is specifically designed with a more robust frame designed to accept a triple-pane insulated glass unit that enhances performance and durability.

tip

JELD-WEN is a recognized leader in manufacturing energy-efficient products and has been an ENERGY STAR Partner since 1998. By choosing ENERY STAR compliant windows from JELD-WEN’s Northern Tri-Pane Collection, you could be eligible for a number of provincial and federal rebates, including the Canada Greener Homes Grant.

Linen is a durable natural fibre derived from the flax plant and has been around for more than 6,000 years. (It was used to preserve mummies in Egypt!) This sustainable fibre can wick away moisture, making it an excellent fabric for bedding. Linen is also naturally antibacterial, so it is a great choice for window treatments and accent pillows. In addition, the fabric is synonymous with summer and can give you that outdoor feeling indoors all year long.

powerPink

Lifestyle blogger and designer Candace Alongi of The Minted Mama creates a pretty pink powder room abounding with sparkle and style

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS POWDER ROOM RENOVATION?

As the last untouched space on our main floor, I wanted this small powder room to go above and beyond. I believe powder rooms are meant to be a little over the top, so I said yes to pink tile, yes to gold accents everywhere, and yes to a space that brings my family joy every time we walk into it.

FAVOURITE DETAIL?

Lighting makes or breaks a space for me. I used a larger version of the chandelier in another room in our home and loved it so much that I also decided to install it here. The matching sconces were an absolute must, and together they added just the right amount of luxe and glamour to the powder room.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE

DESIGNING THIS SPACE?

Selecting the paint colour! Believe it or not, there are hot pink walls beneath this beautiful grey hue. The lesson learned is to keep ‘wow’ factors to a minimum, especially in a small space. The tile wall delivers such a significant impact on its own, that it doesn’t need anything else to compete with it.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR HOMEOWNERS WHO ARE AFRAID TO USE PINK IN THEIR DESIGN PALETTE?

Balance out this overtly feminine shade with bold elements that anchor the space and make it welcoming to all. Also, start small if you’re nervous about introducing it on a larger scale. Begin with pieces that don’t feel like a commitment, such as throw cushions, artwork, or a beautiful vase.

WHAT ARE THREE KEY ELEMENTS TO DESIGNING A BEAUTIFUL AND FUNCTIONAL BATHROOM?

1. Step out of your comfort zone and create an eye-catching focal point.

2. Use materials that can stand the test of time (even with repeated use by little ones).

3. Be sure there is plenty of storage to hide all the essentials you don’t want anyone to see!

A small backyard in the heart of downtown Toronto is turned into a stylish, monochromatic retreat

Who says you must have a large backyard to enjoy the outdoors?

Jaclyn Genovese, luxury interior designer and founder of Spaces by Jacflash, re-vamped this small backyard in Yorkville into a luxurious and functional living space. So, how did she do it? Genovese and her team started with their client’s existing dining set and swapped their old red umbrella and seat cushions for

rich, warm grey and charcoal-toned ones to make the setting feel more sophisticated. “We opted for neutral and organic colours to create a peaceful, low maintenance oasis,” says Genovese.

Luxury living doesn’t always mean breaking the bank. Her team mixed an inexpensive IKEA rug with a streamlined, luxurious Restoration Hardware sectional, then paired the sectional with textured woven cushions. A cement

fire pit that doubles as a coffee table was placed in the space to create a cosy atmosphere. And, as a final, unique touch, a once empty area of the backyard was filled with a modern, customwood shed installation and Dynasty Toronto enhanced the space with potted plants.

Genovese agrees that accessories are the key to bringing any space together. “A rug, cushions and various plants and planters bring life to any

space. Adding organic elements like the modern, custom-wood installation to a once cold, bare and characterless nook, and a fire pit to a sitting area, creates warmth and personality,” she explains.

pro-tip

“Minimalism is key when working with a smaller space. Cluttering the area with too many accessories, colours and textures overwhelms the eye and brings chaos in.” – Jaclyn Genovese

The final result is a sophisticated and stylish retreat that her clients will enjoy for years to come.

Think a white kitchen is boring? Think again!

Designer Dvira Ovadia created a light kitchen bursting with visual interest and functionality. R+D breaks down the key details that make this cooking space a masterpiece. 1 3

Storage

1 2 3 4

This kitchen is all about storage, which is a key aspect to any well-designed kitchen. The upper and lower cabinets allow for items to be stowed away discreetly while the glass cabinets offer the ability to showcase practical and personalized items such as longstem glassware and vases.

Bold countertops and backsplash

There is no doubt that the backsplash and the countertops in this kitchen make a dynamic design statement. Keeping these two elements the same creates a cohesive yet ‘wow’ factor look.

Contrast

Although this is a white kitchen, Ovadia creates dimension and contrast by adding the right amount of black and a hit of shine with gold details throughout the space. The herringbone wood flooring adds warmth and texture to the area, mirroring the soft gold touches.

Unexpected colour

To finish off this stunning cooking space, Ovadia adds a pop of muted red in the openconcept dining area. This unexpected infusion of colour adds dimension and a playful element to this kitchen.

Freewheeling

Interior designer Cynthia Soda worked with the team at HGTV’s Holmes Family Rescue to fix a previous poorly done reno and turn a house into a beautiful and functional home for a couple and their wheelchair-bound son

Afew years ago, when Iwan and Ivona decided to start a family, they sold their small downtown condo and bought a fixer-upper in the suburbs. They hired a contractor to start some renovations, which were poorly done, but before they could have them fixed, Ivona became pregnant. Three months after their son Noah was born, he was diagnosed with cancer, which left him left unable to use his legs.

The earlier renovations had left chipped and broken tiles and uneven floors, which make it difficult for Noah, who is now five, to get around the main floor in his wheelchair.

Challenge #1: The floors

The biggest challenge was to provide a seamless experience for Noah in his wheelchair. That meant replacing all the floors.

“I wanted a flooring that would suit the whole main level from front to back, for it to be attractive, tough and durable, and be a smooth transition for Noah’s wheelchair,” explains Cynthia Soda, owner and principal designer of Soda Pop Design Inc..

Soda chose Gemtec’s Hardwood Masterpiece white oak DaVinci from Twelve Oaks, an engineered hardwood floor

that is waterproof, child- and pet-friendly, has a durable wood core and comes with a lifetime residential warranty.

“It looks and feels like wide-plank solid wood but the core is a dense rubber with a laminated back and a fused veneer

top, so there is no way water can get in,” she says. This is an important detail because the wheels of Noah’s wheelchair are often wet coming inside from out of the rain.

Challenge #2: The kitchen

The smallish kitchen needed to be updated and, as mentioned, the tile floor was a mess and a danger for Noah in his wheelchair. A lot of thought was given to choosing materials that were durable to withstand knocks and bangs from the wheelchair, and ensuring the overall design would be barrier-free to allow Noah to participate in kitchen activities.

“The client had mentioned to me they would sit Noah on the counter when he wanted to help cook. I thought about what they wanted to do and how to keep him safe, and went with a countertop and Invisacook by Ciot,” explains Soda.

“The technology is safe, cold to the touch and takes up no space. It actually looks like there is no cooktop on the counter because the Invisicook is installed underneath the countertop. Plus, the benefit of the induction cooktop is that it doesn’t get hot so he could sit anywhere on the countertop and not get burned if it’s off, plus it saves space.”

Other kitchen adjustments included continuing the tile finishes on the back of the island to reach the floor, dropping one end of the counter to desk height so Noah could food prep or do homework, and installing appliances such as a pull-out microwave drawer at an accessible level.

Challenge #3: Noah’s bathroom

The main floor bathroom is also the family’s primary bathroom, so the aim was to make it accessible but not look like a hospital setting.

Renovated to accommodate Noah’s needs, there were a lot of little details to consider, including working with a critical clearance zone of a five-foot turning radius for the wheelchair, enough room to accommodate the length of the grab bar located at the right of the toilet, and three-feet of clearance to get in and out of the shower. It was those critical clearances that determined the size of the overall space.

“Other factors we had to think about was how high the countertop should be, what would be the slope required when Noah washed his hands in the sink, and even a tilted mirror so he could see himself,” says Soda.

And since he uses a different wheelchair for when he showers, the roll-in shower was designed with a half wall to hide the wheelchair when not in use.

“For this family, not having the equipment visible all the time was thoughtful and considered his needs, but it also didn’t have to be seen all the time.”

Growing and maintaining a cedar hedge

One of the most asked gardening questions we get is: Is it OK to trim my cedar hedge now?

Cedars (Thuja) are one of the most versatile evergreens in Canada, with very few areas in the country where you cannot grow at least one variety of cedar.

When can you trim?

The truth is , you can trim a cedar hedge almost any time of the year. However, we recommend the spring and autumn.

Most cedar trees will grow relatively consistent throughout the growing season. Spring pruning allows you to shape the plant before it pushes a flush of new growth. From late in the summer until early fall, cedars will

PRUNING TIPS

When pruning, always shape the bottom of the hedge wider than the top. This allows even exposure to sunlight and helps to keep the entire cedar hedge looking thick and healthy.

A cedar hedge will live for 30 to 60 years depending on the variety and its location. 1 3 2

If your hedge has been ignored for several years, you can still bring it under control by removing up to one third of the foliage each year until it looks the way that you want it to, but be prepared for the appearance of bare wood for a couple of years as the plants fill in.

push new growth if there is moisture in the ground and the temperatures are not too high.

What kind of cedar makes a good hedge?

In central and Maritime Canada, the native White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) is the most popular to use as a hedge. It is inexpensive and is often dug from native plantations, almost bare root. It generally doesn’t grow for a year or two as it puts down roots in the soil, but when it does grow, you can expect up to a metre of new growth each year. Expect the first flush of growth in year three. We recommend Brandon cedars for Prairie gardeners and Emerald cedars for the B.C. coast and lower mainland.

Is it true that cedars attract mosquitoes?

PLANTING CEDARS

Mark your line with a string or garden hose to get the hedge straight.

Dig a trench 1/2-metre wide and 1/3-meter deep.

Back-fill the bottom of the trench with triple mix (1/3 topsoil, 1/3 peat and 1/3 compost).

Stand your cedars upright in the trench before piling the remainder of the triple mix on their roots.

Once the cedars are lined up straight and you have added the remainder of the triple mix, step firmly on the soil as you plant, making contact between the soil and the roots of the new trees.

Water thoroughly and stake every two metres with a T-bar or two-inch by twoinch stake, using heavy gauge wire to secure them in place.

No, this is not true. Cedars get this reputation from growing naturally in low/wet land where mosquitoes tend to breed. It is the environment that breeds mosquitoes, not the cedars themselves. What is true, is that cedars are your best bet for a fast growing, evergreen hedge in most parts of the country.

Be patient

Most important! Don’t be too ambitious when choosing your new cedars. New trees about one metre high will establish much more quickly than large, two-metre high specimens, unless the large trees have been nursery grown. 1 6 2 3 4 5 7

Your cedar hedge will grow and mature into a thing of beauty as time passes, and you attend to the annual trimming (yes, only once a year will do the trick). Plus, you will have an investment that grows in value each year – unlike installing a fence.

Table talk

Show me a room, and I’ll show you a table put to good use. This indispensable, versatile piece of furniture doesn’t get the credit or consideration it deserves. Tables play a central role in eating areas, such as the dining room and kitchen, but without the omnipresent table, no room would ever feel complete.

But with all the different table types, qualities and styles on the furniture market, how do you know what to choose? Here are three things to consider before you hit the showrooms.

Function

Yes, it’s a table – coffee, dining, console, bedside. But despite its name, the indispensable table serves more functions than just the one it’s named after. With the rise of remote working, learning and entertaining, we’re really giving the table a run for its money. But before you go shopping, establish your use of the table and determine the criteria. Will you be seated at the table? At chairs, a sofa or kneeling on the floor? Is it functional, decorative or both? Does it need to accommodate any objects or tools, or storage otherwise?

Style

Consider material and shape in the context of how the table will be used, and the broader scheme of the space. The kitchen table will double as a craft and homework area, ensure it’s durable and easy to clean – or better yet, cover up!

Design Tip: If your home is on the smaller size, glass and reflective elements such as polished chrome and mirrors can be your best friend, dramatically lightening the visual impact if the table. Look for “leggy” pieces that don’t block views of the flow of natural light, and create some depth and perspective by positioning a fabulous area rug underneath.

Dimensions

This consideration is multi-faceted, so let’s not waste any time.

Consider the size and specs of the space, which should help inform the dimensions of your table. In addition, it should be appropriately scaled to balance the other furnishings in the space.

Coffee tables can be the trickiest to “size up,” so to speak. The wrong scale or height can make a living room appear awkward and uninviting. To ensure your physical comfort and a well-scaled look, opt for a coffee table that’s the same height as the cushions on your sofa, or one to two inches lower.

Similar to height, your coffee table has to hit the right length in relation to the width of your sofa. Specifically, it should measure approximately twothirds the length of your sofa. So, a 96-inch sofa would accommodate a 64-inch coffee table.

One final rule of measurement is in your coffee table’s positioning. The ideal placement is 12 to 18 inches away from your sofa, making it easy to reach but well out of the way.

Measure the room, placement of walls, paths of traffic, doorways and windows. Don’t forget to measure doorways and elevators. Now sketch it out, mark the measurements and bring this with you when you hit the showrooms – online or in-person!

Time to Shop!

If you’re shopping in person, be mindful of the showroom, which is usually a large, bright space with soaring ceilings and lots of “breathing room.” This can be deceiving. Never assume that because “it looks like it will fit your space,” that it actually will. This is especially the case with a larger-scale item, such as a table.

Now you’re ready to shop for a table that will meet your household’s needs for years to come – with measurements, purpose and confidence!

Deciding whom to

HIRE

Once you have interviewed renovators, checked their references and received written price quotes from those you are interested in hiring, it’s time to decide who will be doing your job

Renovators should be allowed adequate time to prepare a bid for your project, and you must ensure that each renovator is working with the same plans and specifications. For all but the simplest projects, you should expect the renovator to present their bid in person, so that they can discuss each aspect with you an answer any question you may have.

Once you have met with the renovators who are bidding on your job, you should review each set of bid documents carefully before deciding who to hire.

Decide the importance of each aspect of your evaluation. While overall price is important, it is only one factor. Many homeowners who have successfully completed major home renovations speak about the importance of “peace of mind” – working with a renovator they trusted and felt confident in.

2 13 4 5 6

If you have a particularly strong sense of confidence in one of the renovators, they are probably your best choice, even if their price is not the lowest. In the end, you should choose the renovator based on your sense of the overall value they can provide to you.

Compare every aspect of their bids – the description of the work, specifications (materials and products), price and allowances, deposit and payment milestones, project schedule and any additional recommendations or ideas for your project.

Review the information you collected during and after your initial impressions of each renovator, and what their previous customers had to say about them.

Finding Zen IN THE BACKYARD

The backyard isn’t just an ordinary plot of land. With just a little work and imagination it can be the homeowner’s portal to their favourite place in the world.

Whether it’s a small lot at the back of a townhome, or an expansive space of an estate home, the backyard can be shaped into something more than it is. It can be a Japanese Zen Garden; a serene, desert oasis; a gurgling stream; a meditative grotto; or a spot primed to entertain residents and their guests.

Landscaping is key in this pursuit. No matter how small the yard is, there are crafty ways to make the most out of your private outdoor space and make it truly your own.

Karlee Walters, Landscape Designer and Project Coordinator at Edmontonbased HML Landscape, Construction & Maintenance, tells R+D that landscaping is key to enjoying our own private outdoor space at home.

“Not only does landscaping increase the value of your home it also increases the amount of living space on your property. A well landscaped yard can provide another entertaining

HML – Township

space, playroom, or even kitchen to your home,” she says.

A common misconception is that landscaping involves just yard maintenance. It goes far more than that, Walters says, and can include the designing and construction of water features, stone patios, and walkways, and putting up decks, fences and pergolas, and retaining walls.

Where to start

It can be a bit intimidating to look at an overgrown, weed-infested backyard and not see the potential for beauty. But Walters says it all begins with a vision.

“We always tell people the best place to start is with a plan. Even if it takes 10 years to complete your dream yard you at least know where your headed and will avoid having to re-work sections of your yard to no longer fit as your tastes change,” she tells R+D.

“When planning your front yard always pay attention to where you are going to pile snow. Maintenance products like salt and ice melt can damage your lawn if it in the snow

being piled along the driveway or street,” she cautions.

“Always think about how your lawn mower will move in your yard. If you are incorporating a lot of planting beds or trees always make sure they are in beds with an edge easy to run the lawn lower over to avoid needing additional trimming. Make sure you are not creating pinch points that the lawn lower can’t get into. Set your lawn up for the easiest maintenance possible.”

Aim for use

She adds that – no matter if it’s the smaller backyard or a townhome or the grand spaciousness of an acreagegetting the most of the private outdoor space is planning how it will be used.

“Always think about how your family is going to use the space. Do you entertain a lot, do your kids want to play soccer in the backyard, do you have a dog? All these things are necessary to determine the flow and function of your yard,” she says.

“When mapping out your backyard you always want to think about

function first. Once you have determined how your yard will function you can start to work on how it will flow. How will the entertaining space interact with the play space, or how will the dog run access link to the patio doors? No matter what size your yard is you always want to make sure you are maximizing every corner of it making it a space you want to spend a lot of time in.”

Landscape trends

HML has been working on landscaping in the St. Albert and Edmonton area for years and are attuned to the unique needs of the land – from its tricky weather patterns to soil composition, all of which can affect how the backyard turns out.

“Our landscape designers work with you every step of the way to help you get the most out of your property investment. We draft your vision in 2D and 3D perspectives, effectively presenting a design to suite your lifestyle, purpose and vision.”

She says that, as far as using the backyard for entertainment goes, they always recommend the use of a paving stone patio.

“Decks are great, but they typically elevate you a couple feet off the ground making you even more exposed to your neighbors. Building a small landing off the back of your house that will lead you down to a ground level patio brings your entertainment space below the fence line so your 6’ fence acts more as a privacy screen.”

As for design trends, Walters says bringing light to the subject is important.

“Lighting, lighting, lighting. We live in a climate that only allows us to enjoy our backyard half the year. Adding landscape lighting will enhance your yard and allow you to enjoy it from inside your home. It really helps tie your backyard into the rest of your house and

makes your living spaces appear larger.”

HML has also noticed a rise in the number of raised garden beds. “More and more people want to be able to grow some food at home but the thought of taking care of a large garden can be daunting. A raised garden bed makes maintenance way easier and gives and overall cleaner look to a garden space in a small backyard.
