THEN, AND ALL THE IN-BETWEENS
There’s something unmistakably hopeful about backto-school season. Whether your little one is starting kindergarten or stepping into the whirlwind of middle school, this time of year brings a fresh mix of excitement –and a fair share of nerves.
Years ago, back-to-school meant labelling lunch bags, packing tiny backpacks, and double-knotting shoes while little feet bounced around the hallway. I remember those chaotic mornings clearly. As parents, the to-do list grew fast: school supplies, new shoes, lunchbox snacks, and the endless quest for a routine that made mornings feel less like a fire drill. Let’s be honest – it never got easier.
My oldest was the organized one. His backpack nearly swallowed him whole, but he marched into school with a plan. I’d kiss his forehead and pretend I wasn’t nervous, wondering if he’d eat his sandwich or find someone to sit with. I was always the first mom at pickup – and the last to leave. He walked out at a snail’s pace, mentally checking things off his list like a tiny CEO.
Fast forward, and that same boy was driving himself to school. His final year of high school came faster than I could process. That “last first day” hit differently. (I cried from September to Prom and all through those final days.)
My second oldest eased into school with quiet confidence. Grade 10 felt like the sweet spot – less chaos, more clarity – but still a whole lot of growing. That year brought real talks about friendships, future plans, and figuring out who you are in a world that wants you to fit in. Let me be clear: there’s no real sweet spot – just different kinds of learning curves.
And then there were the twins. Always each other’s built-in backup – though to be honest, it was usually Twin A keeping Twin B on track. I saw their individuality blossom. One thing I did get to hold onto was the matching outfits – thanks to school uniforms. Uniforms made mornings easier, but trust me, they still found ways to express themselves. Suddenly we had different playlists, strong opinions, and daily debriefs filled with drama. It was chaotic, messy, and filled with glitter in places glitter should never be – but honestly? Those were the best days.
Looking back, school wasn’t just about academics. It was about resilience, friendships, and learning when to hold on – and when to let go.
And though the house is quieter now, my heart still carries those back-to-school memories. Trust me, embrace it because it will all be over in a flash.

parenting HOW TO GET STUDENTS EXCITED ABOUT A NEW SCHOOL YEAR
A new school year presents a wealth of opportunities for students. At the dawn of a new school year, students have a chance to further their academic careers, student-athletes may be given a shot at making a team or moving up to varsity, and extracurriculars provide a chance for personal growth outside the classroom.
Despite all that a new school year represents, students may need a little extra motivation to get excited about going back to campus once summer winds down. A relaxing and largely obligation-free summer vacation can be tough to give up, as can mornings without alarm clocks.
Parents recognize that kids might not be enthusiastic about the return of early mornings and sessions in the classroom. In such instances, parents can try the following strategies to get kids excited about a new school year.
Make the first day specia
First days can be challenging regardless of a person’s age.
Professionals with years of experience in their field still feel firstday jitters when they begin a new job, so youngsters can be excused if what seems like a lack of excitement is really just nervousness about a new school year. Parents can calm those nerves by doing something to make the first day special. Skip the standard cereal and prepare a homecooked breakfast or let kids buy lunch at the school cafeteria instead of packing a PB&J in their lunchbox. A little something special on the first day can go a long way toward getting kids excited about going back to school.
Emphasize new subject
As children advance through school, they’re typically exposed to more engaging subjects or
challenged in ways that helps them build on previous years’ work. Emphasizing new subjects or opportunities can increase kids’ excitement to get back in the school year swing of things. If a youngster likes playing an instrument, emphasize how the new school year is an opportunity to get better, play alongside other students and take a talent to new heights. If students are old enough to take subjects they’ve long been interested in, such as a foreign language, make a point to emphasize how that opportunity has finally arrived.
Create a school calendar
Schools typically make their yearly schedules available prior to the first day of school. Parents can peruse those schedules alongside their children and make a calendar noting special days. Mark down field trips, special events involving parents and
students, school performances where kids get to act or sing on stage, and other notable moments during the school year. Kids are bound to grow more excited about a new year when they see a year’s worth of fun events marked down on a calendar.
Host a late summer get-together with friends
A late-summer pool party or play date with various friends can remind youngsters that they’re about to see their friends every day. That might be enough to make young students jump out of bed on the first day of school.
Students might be less than excited about the end of summer vacation and the dawn of a new school year. But there’s many things parents can do to get kids excited about going back to school.

HOW GROWING CONCERNS ABOUT SUBSTANCE USE SPARKED A PROGRAM FOR CHANGE
Today, youth between the ages of 12 and 21, are using substances and developing addictions – from nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, opioids, and yes, even excessive gaming and social media usage.
Dr. Amit Rotem, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and Deputy Chief at the Child, Youth and Family Services with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), notes, “While some level of experimentation is expected during adolescence, it’s crucial for both youth and their parents to recognize the line between occasional use and addiction.”
In 2019, 1 in 4 students – nearly 23 per cent – surveyed by CAMH said they’d vaped in the past year, more than double the rate in 2017 at 11 per cent.
“In Ontario, we have observed the increasing impact of youth vaping, especially among high school students,” says Dr. Trish Tulloch, a pediatrician specializing in adolescent addiction medicine. “The impact of vaping on youth is made worse by the accessibility and addictive nature of nicotine found within these devices.”
It’s not just nicotine and other substances impacting youth. With
the prevalent usage of technology in our day-to-day, and a rampant dependency on second screen media that makes it easier than ever to remain tethered to devices, recent data shows that 94 per cent of students spend five hours or more a day scrolling through social platforms.
“The use of technology as a substitute for human interaction has become increasingly normalized, often at the cost of our mental health,” says Dr. Daniela Lobo, an addiction psychiatrist specializing in gaming and gambling disorders at CAMH.
So, what can families and youth do? Youth-VAST (Vaping, Alcohol,
Substance Use, and Technology) Dependence Program, a new service, by CAMH offers free and confidential treatment to youth in Ontario. The first of its kind in Canada, the program is designed to address many different types of addiction youth are facing including substance use (alcohol, opioids, stimulants, cannabis, vaping, and nicotine), and overuse of technology.
Available in English or French to Ontario residents between the ages of 12 to 21 years old, this team-based care program provides confidential, non-judgmental support anywhere in Ontario, virtually or in-person.
“Youth-VAST is here to support young people, wherever they are in Ontario. We help them explore the why and how to live healthier and full lives,” says Rotem.
Every participant in the program is assigned a care coach for six to eight weeks and will receive personalized treatment based on their assessment. Care coaches will help them build their self-confidence and resilience, change behaviours, develop healthy coping strategies to manage cravings and address triggers, and collaborate with each participant’s circle of care such as family members, health care providers, and teachers.
Carole-Anne Chiasson, Clinical Director of the Child, Youth and Emerging Adult Program at CAMH says, “Youth-VAST is more than just a program, it’s a health system and community built to foster connection, understanding, and recovery for youth navigating substance use and overuse of technology challenges.”
If you or someone close to you is dealing with challenges related to vaping, nicotine, alcohol, substance use, or excessive technology use, CAMH Youth-VAST is ready to listen and help. Visit WeHearYou.ca to learn more or to get started.

family fun SUMMER LOVIN’ AT JW MARRIOTT THE ROSSEAU MUSKOKA RESORT & SPA
WORDS BY ANDREW HIND
Summer days in cottage country are meant to be spent on the lake. The water lures us, like a siren’s call, into its refreshing embrace. It is seemingly irresistible to resist.
There’s little about the JW Marriott Rosseau Muskoka Resort and Spa that doesn’t impress. The resort recognizes the magnetic pull of the lake and has curated the experience accordingly.
You head down to the lake in morning and, thanks to the diversity of offerings, never want to leave.
Children play on the sandy beach or frolic in the shallows while mom and dad recline watchfully in a nearby cabana. Little ones squeal in delight in the joyous waterpark a stone’s throw away.
Lift yourself from your cabana and hop aboard a paddleboard or kayak and glide across the pristine waters of Lake Rosseau. It’s an opportunity to
connect with nature and experience Muskoka at a slower pace.
Looking for something less sedate and more adrenaline-fueled?
The resort, in partnership with SWS Muskoka, has you covered. Rent a jet ski or embark aboard a pontoon boat tour, or thrill to the experience of tubing, waterskiing,
or wakeboarding. For something fresh and exciting, take an eFoil for a spin. One of the latest developments in personalized watercraft, an eFoil combines elements of surfing and hydrofoiling with electric propulsion for a memorable experience of racing above the water’s surface at speed.
The Rosseau has unveiled an exciting addition to its waterfront activities this year in the form of a floating pickleball court. New to pickleball? A hybrid of tennis, table tennis and badminton, it’s among the fastest growing sports in North America. A floating court elevates the experience by combining the fun of the sport with the refreshing joy of being on the water. The Rosseau is the first resort in Canada to boast this exciting attraction.
Recognizing that no one wants to peel themselves away from the lake for lunch, the Rosseau brings
lunch to the lake. Or rather, to The Deck, a beautiful waterside casual dining venue where you can still feel the breeze off the water. Choose from fish tacos and salads, burgers and bruschetta. The real standouts, however, the flatbreads made in the on-site wood-fired pizza oven.
A family getaway shouldn’t be all about the kids. Parents should carve some time out for themselves. You’ve earned it. After a day by the water, head to the newly opened Signal Hill Whiskey Bar. Perched on the patio with stunning vistas of Lake Rosseau stretching out to the horizon, it’s a refined setting to savour premium Canadian whiskey and handcrafted cocktails as the setting sun paints the horizon. Cheers to a day or created special memories with your children.
Summer days at JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort are centred around the lake, just as it should be.

Residents of the United States and Canada celebrate Labour Day each September on the first Monday of the month to acknowledge the contributions of each nation’s workers. The holiday can be traced to the late nineteenth century, when labour activists campaigned for a federal holiday to recognize hardworking employees and their accomplishments.
Although the holiday originally was crafted by the labour movement, not much Labour occurs on Labour Day each year. Rather, Labour Day is a time when most workers enjoy a well-deserved day off, and various recreational events take place. Individuals can explore these tips to enjoy a memorable, fun and safe Labour Day.
Grilling time
Grilling is a centerpiece of many Labour Day celebrations. Although guests may look forward to familiar fare, such as burgers and hot dogs, introducing some interesting menu items into the mix can elevate the event even further. Explore options with seafood and vegetables or even experiment with different flavor
safety tips
ENJOY A FUN LABOUR DAY
profiles. Replace chicken with shrimp on kabobs or swap beef for lamb in burgers for even more variety.
When grilling, always emphasize safety. Never leave the grill unattended and ensure that the grill is located away from the main action and far enough from the house so that nothing will catch fire.
Factor in traffic
Traffic is a common complaint during the summer, but especially during holiday weekends. AAA booking data showed overall domestic travel over Labour Day weekend 2024 was up 9 per cent compared to the year prior. In many locations, Labour Day is the last hurrah before school begins, so roadways tend to be congested. The transportation data experts at INRIX recommend car travellers avoid the afternoon and early evening hours of Thursday and Friday, as those times tend to be the busiest. Leaving early on Thursday or Friday or departing on Saturday afternoon will help travellers avoid most traffic and begin their weekends less stressed. Plus, drivers are less likely to drive aggressively when they build in a time buffer.
Head to the water
Water sports, boating, swimming, and other water-based activities are entertaining ideas for Labour Day. Life jackets are essential on boats and other watercraft, and inexperienced swimmers may want to wear them as well. Everyone should avoid alcohol consumption while boating or swimming. Try to stick to areas that have lifeguards on duty.
Firework smarts
Fireworks can cap off a summer of fun. Instead of lighting fireworks at
home, head to an event organized by pyrotechnics experts for the safest situation. Pets can become skittish during loud noises associated with fireworks, so keep them indoors in a quiet room where they can remain calm and are less likely to run away and get lost outdoors.
Labour Day tends to be summer’s curtain call. Make the most of it this year but remember to always play it safe.

EDUCATING THE WHOLE CHILD Halton Waldorf School
For over 40 years, Halton Waldorf School has guided students on a rich educational journey – from their first steps in Preschool to the threshold of adulthood in Grade 12. Located in northeast Burlington across two vibrant campuses, we offer a seamless and nurturing K–12 experience grounded in the timehonoured principles of Waldorf education.
Our approach is both academically rigorous and deeply creative, blending intellectual development with artistic expression, movement, nature, and storytelling. At every stage, students are met with a curriculum designed specifically for their developmental phase – igniting curiosity, strengthening confidence, and building the skills they need to thrive in a complex world.
In the early grades, our Main Teacher model – where one teacher ideally guides a class from Grades 1 through 8 – creates a foundation of trust, consistency, and meaningful connection. This continuity supports each child’s academic, emotional,
and social growth, allowing the teacher to truly understand and nurture their students over time.
Our lessons are delivered in focused, immersive blocks, giving students the time and space to dive deeply into each subject. Learning unfolds through doing, feeling, and thinking, with the arts woven through
all academic disciplines to enhance engagement, comprehension, and creativity. The result is not just knowledge but understanding –learning that lasts and inspires.
As students enter high school, they build on this foundation with an integrated curriculum that fosters critical thinking,
ethical awareness, and real-world problem-solving. Waldorf graduates are recognized worldwide for their creativity, resilience, and leadership capacity – traits that naturally emerge from a learning environment that values both individuality and community.
Waldorf education is grounded in the belief that children flourish when their education nurtures not only the intellect but also the imagination and the spirit. At Halton Waldorf School, this philosophy comes to life in every classroom, every handwork project, every musical performance, and every thoughtful conversation. Our students are encouraged to question deeply, express freely, and engage wholeheartedly with the world around them.
From the joyful play of early childhood to the inspired inquiry of adolescence, our school fosters a lifelong love of learning and a deep sense of purpose. A Waldorf education is more than preparation for the next step; it’s preparation for a meaningful life.
LEARNERS TODAY, LEADERS TOMORROW Northmount School
Northmount School is a Catholic independent boys preparatory school (JK – 8). Its supportive environment helps boys achieve their greatest potential, emphasizing academic excellence, character development, values and service, which lead to a meaningful, balanced and fulfilling life.
Northmount School provides a sound, stimulating and coherent education to prepare boys in their development as responsible citizens. The school helps each student to reach his full potential, develop critical thinking skills, self-discipline, a respect for others, and a strong moral character. We recognize that the parents are the boys’ first teachers and thus we enter into a partnership
between parents, students and the school to establish a rich and vibrant community life.
We deeply respect and are guided by our tradition, its spirituality, appeal to the common good, and its values. We are multi-cultural and our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our Catholic roots encourage a belief in the dignity of every person and a respect for a variety of faith traditions.
Our boys learn to support one another in a nurturing environment; one that is made possible by our superior and highly committed staff who are dedicated to implementing Northmount’s goals. The world’s next generation will need leadership from responsible individuals who
are morally sound and whose values speak to the Truth. For boys who aspire to have character when men, the journey begins at Northmount.
Our school community finds its foundations in the teaching of the Catholic Church. Families of all faiths, however, are welcome, as we see our school as a microcosm of society. We teach from a Catholic perspective and this informs how we teach, understand right from wrong, and guide our boys to manhood.
The family plays an important role in Northmount’s vision for education. As the primary educators in their children’s lives, parents are active in the academic, co-curricular and faith development of their boys and in
helping them to develop character. The school seeks out opportunities to engage with the family to round out the experiences in a young boy’s life. Our academic program is one of which our school community is extremely proud, and our dedicated teachers ascribe to pedagogy that focuses on the needs of boys using contemporary tools. As a single-sex school and with significant research to back this focus, Northmount ensures that boys develop the necessary academic skills to find success in high school and beyond.
We would love to have the opportunity to host your family for a visit. Please book a tour and find out more about how Northmount could be the right school for your son.
The Study Academy
UNLEASHING POTENTIAL: HOW THE STUDY ACADEMY EMPOWERS THE TWICE-EXCEPTIONAL LEARNER
In the landscape of education, there exists a unique and often misunderstood student: the twiceexceptional (2e) learner. These bright, intellectually curious individuals possess remarkable gifts and talents, yet are often challenged by the complexities of learning differences such as ADHD, SLD, or autism spectrum disorder. For too long, traditional educational settings have struggled to adequately support these students, often failing to address either their exceptional abilities or their specific challenges. This is precisely where The Study Academy distinguishes itself, standing as a beacon for 2e learners in Toronto and beyond.
The Study Academy was founded on the profound understanding that 2e students are not simply “gifted with a learning disability” or “struggling despite their intelligence.” They are, rather, individuals whose strengths and challenges are intricately interwoven, creating a distinct learning profile that demands a specialized approach. At The Study Academy, the focus is not on remediation in isolation, nor solely on enrichment, but on a holistic, integrated strategy that nurtures every facet of the 2e student.
What sets The Study Academy apart is its unwavering commitment to individualized learning. With an impressive student-to-teacher ratio, each student receives the personalized attention crucial for their success. This isn’t just about smaller class sizes; it’s about a deeply personalized curriculum meticulously crafted to identify and build upon each student’s unique strengths,
while simultaneously developing strategies to address their areas of need. Every student at The Study Academy benefits from a tailored Learning Plan, outlining their specific learning profile, accessibility needs, and strategies for academic and personal growth.
The curriculum itself is designed to engage the curious and divergent minds of 2e learners. Built upon Ministry of Education guidelines, inquiry-based learning and collaborative projects encourage students to delve deep into subjects they are passionate about, fostering critical thinking and creative problemsolving. Beyond core academics, a rich array of elective courses, from digital creations to outdoor skills and literary adventures, provides avenues
for students to explore their diverse interests and discover new talents. This comprehensive approach ensures that giftedness is not stifled but celebrated and channelled productively.
Crucially, The Study Academy understands that academic success for 2e learners is inextricably linked to their social and emotional wellbeing. The school cultivates a warm, collegial, and inclusive environment where students feel supported and empowered to take academic risks. Opportunities for friendship and social engagement are abundant, fostering a sense of belonging that is vital for students who may have felt out of place in other settings. Through student council, house systems, and extracurricular activities, students
develop leadership skills, build relationships, and gain confidence in who they are as learners and individuals.
Ultimately, The Study Academy is more than just a school; it’s a community dedicated to empowering twice-exceptional learners to realize their full potential. By embracing their unique learning profiles, providing tailored support, and fostering an environment where both strengths and challenges are understood and addressed, The Study Academy helps 2e students not just succeed, but truly thrive. For parents seeking an educational home where their bright, complex child will be genuinely seen, understood, and championed, The Study Academy offers an unparalleled solution.

Our focus on child development (“The right thing at the right time”) and our arts-infused curriculum distinguish us from traditional schools. Waldorf students are responsible, confident, life-long learners, who can problemsolve, think creatively, and serve their communities.
One of the defining strengths of the Waldorf curriculum lies in its integration of art and academics. At TWS, we seamlessly incorporate academic learning into everyday life, fostering connections between abstract concepts and their practical applications. Central to Waldorf philosophy is the belief in holistic education, where students are not only intellectually challenged but also encouraged to cultivate their intrinsic curiosity and creativity. Our diverse performance arts programs, ranging from music and eurythmy to fencing and circus arts, further enrich the learning experience. At TWS, students are inspired by a broad spectrum of classes that ignite their passion and creativity in ways that are truly transformative.
Toronto Waldorf School is set on 18 acres of picturesque land, encompassing fields, forests, and a ravine. We strongly encourage outdoor play in all seasons, with students engaging in activities outside even in the rain or snow. Except in extreme weather conditions, TWS promotes outdoor exploration, particularly for children in Kindergarten and Lower School. As the seasons change, students not only enjoy outdoor play but also engage with the scientific principles
behind these seasonal shifts in their everyday learning.
The diverse range of subjects offered in both Lower School and High School provides students with a well-rounded education throughout the year. In addition to academic pursuits, TWS integrates cultural festivals and histories into the curriculum, with a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity at the core of our values.
Students at TWS spend a significant amount of time outdoors, and parents should anticipate
that outdoor play will occur daily, regardless of weather conditions, including rain and snow. TWS is a non-denominational institution; however, we celebrate a diverse range of festivals and holidays throughout the year, reflecting various cultural traditions. The school adheres to the guidelines set by York Region Public Health, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, masks were worn in compliance with regulatory requirements. Our school is deeply committed to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and equality, ensuring that
all students are treated with respect for their gender and sexual identities. TWS is praised for our caring teachers, hands-on learning, sense of community, and thriving social students.
