NEW KOMATSU HI-TECH HYBRID EXCAVATOR ARRIVES In the new HB365LC-3, 36-tonne hydraulic hybrid excavator, Komatsu has taken the principles evident in their early hybrid machines and added extra muscle, improved fuel economy and enhanced technology to create a machine that will be heavily targeted at the quarrying and crushing sectors. According to Komatsu distributor in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales the HB365LC-3 is expected to be a ‘game-changer’ when the new units begin to arrive in Autumn this year – the first of which is due to be delivered to Galway's Priority Construction, one of Ireland’s leading civil engineering contractors. As with previous hybrid models, this latest version delivers proven economies through lower fuel use and reduced emissions by combining the power of an EU Stage IV engine combined with Komatsu’s famed hybrid system which is kept charged by its own movement. In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, hybrids are considered by some industry insiders to be the machines of the future, with many regarding the unveiling of the new high-tech HB365LC-3 as one of the highlights at the Bauma 2016 international trade fair for the construction industry, held in Munich earlier this year. A new model with no predecessors, McHale describes the HB365LC-3 as ‘a heavyweight excavator with a lightweight environmental impact’ and expects the hybrid to appeal to quarry and crushing contractors seeking an economic machine with proven low fuel consumption figures suited to working in high intensity operations. Comparing the machine to a standard PC360LC-11 excavator, the new hybrid unit is designed to provide 20% fuel savings and having tested the HB365LC-3 throughout 2016 using KOMTRAX data, Komatsu is satisfied that the hybrid has achieved its target. The Japanese manufacturer stole a march on its rivals in terms of its environmental features in 2008, when it produced the first ever hybrid construction equipment and since then over 3,500 units worldwide with some 10,000,000 hours of operation have been registered by excavators equipped

page 4

with Komatsu‘s hybrid technology. Featuring an EU Stage IV engine with ultra-low noise levels, the new HB365LC-3 further reinforces Komatsu’s strong commitment towards a substantial reduction of the environmental impact of its earthmoving machines. Cutting-edge technology Equipped with the same SAA6D114E-6 engine (202 kW / 271 HP) as the PC360LC-11, the HB365LC-3 generates up to 53kW extra electric power through its hybrid system which works on the principle of swing energy regeneration and storage. Energy generated during the swing-braking phase is converted to electricity and stored. Then, when accelerating under workload conditions, the stored energy is discharged to maximise machine performance and assist the engine as required. Komatsu’s advanced electronic control system manages the airflow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters and aftertreatment functions to help optimise performance, reduce emissions and provide advanced diagnostic capability. Use of the AdBlue additive helps further reduce NOx emissions, while Komatsu’s Variable Geometry Turbocharger (KVGT) and an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valves are designed for precise temperature and air management control, coupled with longer component life.

KOMATSU, METSO, MERLO & ZETOR - A SYNERGETIC PORTFOLIO MUCH GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS Komatsu, Metso, Merlo and Zetor. At first glance, readers might wonder how these four diverse product lines can live comfortably, side-by-side, within the one McHale Plant Sales portfolio. Apart from giving McHale Plant Sales a strong foothold in two of Ireland’s most important sectors - construction and agriculture – the relationship between these four diverse brands is closer than one might think. These synergies - one to another and between all four ranges - have come to the fore to guide a number of deals in recent times. Particularly evident is the case of Komatsu and Metso. Since last year and our appointment as distributors for the Finnish manufacturer, we have seen a number of long-standing Komatsu owners add their acclaimed Lokotrack crusher to their fleet inventory. Heavily focused on the construction and civil works sectors, as both manufacturers are, the sight of Komatsu and Metso equipment working side-by-side in quarrying applications, and on major road building and civil works, is becoming an ever more common sight. In farming, it is normal to witness Zetor tractors and Merlo telehandlers working in tandem, most often in crop management, silage production and cattle feeding. Less usual – but becoming more common than ever before is the sight of Zetor working alongside Komatsu in civil works, landscaping and other similar situations, and of Komatsu wheeled loaders working alongside farm tractors when harvesting silage. Most recently, McHale Plant Sales completed a major contract with building and civil engineering specialists NRS Group for the supply of two new Komatsu crawler excavators – a PC210LC-10 Plus and a PC360LC-11 – a deal which, with the addition of a PC210LC-10 purchased earlier in the year plus a number of others previously delivered, has made NRS one of Ireland’s leading Komatsu users. The units were acquired by NRS to augment their fleet working on a 12-turbine 24MW wind farm development at Llynfi Afan in South Wales. What was interesting was their purchase also of a a new Zetor Forterra 150HD tractor to be used for light lifting, loading and care and maintenance functions, and for towing trailers, water bowsers and moving compression equipment within the work site. On construction sites - where Komatsu would be used for site clearance, digging foundations, trenching and laying of water pipes and sewage mains - Merlo telehandlers are coming into their own.

page 6

Fast becoming the preferred and flexible option amongst builders, proof of this was evident in the recent purchase by Clare-based civil engineering contractor, L&M Keating Limited of Kilmihil - one of the top five Safe-T Certified construction companies in Ireland. Their purchase of two new Panoramic units – a P40.17 Plus (with its 4-tonnes lift capacity and a 17-metres reach) and a P38.13 (with its 3.8-tonnes lift and a 13-metres reach) – increased to 14 the number of Merlo units in operation at the company. Referring to what he termed ‘the quality and durability’ of the products, their plant manager Noel Crowley said ‘from our experience of using Merlo, they make a decent machine that gives value for money’. Thanks to the Merlo’s high-lift and long-reach capability, the trend today amongst builders is to include one in the fleet as substitute for the traditional mobile crane - not just for its versatility and lifting power but for the added value of having wheeled, run-around mobility that a crane alone cannot deliver. Put in context, it is clear that products within the McHale Plant Sales portfolio have more in common with each other than a first glance might suggest. To promote interest amongst customers who have what he terms ‘a diverse multi-functional equipment’ need, Michael McHale has pledged to take his ‘sharpest pencil’ when packaging deals for clients. ‘While we don’t think of ourselves as a one-stop shop, it is clear that our product lines now offer cross benefits and bottom line advantages to our customers that we are minded to support’ Michael McHale said.

MINI & MIDI DIGGERS – AN EXPANDING MARKET SEGMENT Powered, in part, by the expanding needs of large utilities, and the growth in what one rental firm calls ‘pavement-size’ projects, the mini to midi size digger market has grown beyond belief in recent times. Driving the market is a vibrant and growing rental sector whose focus on marketing and client service has seen the trade develop in leaps and bounds with annual sales across the industry pitching into four-digit territory. It’s a situation that industry leaders expect will continue as Ireland sets up the task of modernising and upgrading its somewhat overburdened utilities infrastructure. As one would expect, Komatsu and McHale Plant Sales are major players in the sector. With a range that extends from the PC09 to PC55 units, that includes the PC14 and PC16 machines that account for the majority of sales, up to the more powerful PC80 to PC118 midi series, Komatsu’s impressive model offering has a unit to fit every application. Speaking to McHale News, sales director John O’Brien notes that, for a number of years, mini-midi diggers have punched well above their weight. Underlining the value-for-money that Komatsu mini and midi-excavators represent, O’Brien notes that prices span the spectrum from what he terms ‘the surprisingly affordable’ smaller minis to the ‘fully fundable’ top-end midis, with purchase finance widely available across the board. ‘One noteworthy

factor is the degree to which the price of some popular models have remained relatively static over recent years,’ O’Brien said. Described as ‘one of the better investments a buyer can make’, mini and midi-size excavators have a longer-term value that customers should be careful to factor into their buying decision. This relates to a machine’s expected service life and long-term durability – two key considerations that are especially relevant when purchasing Komatsu. According to O’Brien, thanks to the quality of materials and components used in their manufacture and the legendary build quality at the heart of every Japanese machine, ‘the contractor who puts his money into Komatsu is one who has the best prospect of an excellent return on his investment ’. Underlining the extent to which values hold up, O’Brien observed that, when funding a purchase, it is normal that buyers would take a 3 – 5 year view, with the expectation that the machine itself will deliver a rental return over 10 to 20 years, or even longer. Underpinning this growth also is the residual value that customers can expect to recover from a machine that has been well looked after and maintained, the realistic expectation being that a machine of circa 10 years old could fetch a large chunk of its purchase price on the second hand market.

KILSARAN ADDS MUSCLE

TO KOMATSU FLEET Ireland’s largest producer and distributor of concrete and paving products, Dunboyne-based Kilsaran International has added extra muscle to its Komatsu fleet with the recent addition of two new HM300-5 articulated dump trucks. Supplied by McHale Plant Sales, the new units, with their 28 tonne payload capacity, are being put to the test on Kilsaran’s internal soil stripping and pit reclamation projects in quarries throughout the midlands. Commenting on the appeal of Komatsu, with which his company has a long history, Kilsaran Director Martin Curran points to the ‘proven performance, reliability, fuel consumption and build quality'.

Founded in Co. Louth in 1964, Kilsaran has grown to become a household name and a major employer with a staff of some 430 people. With twenty-five production facilities throughout Ireland, their distinctive trucks, with their eyecatching silver livery and Kilsaran trademark displayed on the cab, are a familiar sight on Irish roads.

McHALE PLANT SALES’ ENGINEER TOPS IN KOMATSU SERVICE TRAINING In the field of Komatsu service, three things come together to provide a complete resolution. First is the ability to troubleshoot – to scan through all the possible causes of breakdown and diagnose the perfect response. Second is the skill to carry out an effective repair. Third is the eagle-eyed ability to conduct a walk-round inspection and identify maintenance that may be recommended, damage that should be repaired, and trouble that could lead to downtime, down the line.

In extending the company’s congratulations to Adrian, managing director Michael McHale stressed the company’s commitment to training programmes of this kind. ‘In this way, Komatsu owners in Ireland can have constant access to award-winning, international-standard expertise and back-up, if and when need arises’ he said.

At a recent Advanced Technical Contest and international training seminar hosted by Komatsu in Dusseldorf, Germany, McHale Plant Sales Service Engineer, Adrian Canavan, was judged top-of-the-class in the Mechanical Repair category.

KOMATSU - WORLD LEADER IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AUTONOMOUS HAULAGE VEHICLES Just as the era of autonomous, accident free motoring is becoming a reality as cars that can drive themselves begin to appear on Irish roads, Komatsu has stolen a high-tech march by creating a dump truck that uses similar technology. The unit concerned is described as an Autonomous Haulage Vehicle - is one designed for the mining sector. However, as industry watchers will know, the day cannot be far off when Komatsu will introduce similar technology on frontline construction vehicles. What this might mean in practice is a matter for individual imagination. Suffice it to say, it would not require a great stretch of imagination to foresee dozers, wheel loaders and even excavators having the capacity to operate with minimum involvement on the part of the driver. Exclusively developed to maximise the advantages of unmanned operation in challenging conditions, Komatsu's new autonomous haulage vehicle is designed to eliminate K-turns at loading and unloading sites. By distributing equal load to the four wheels both when the vehicle is loaded and unloaded, and adopting four-wheel drive, retarder and steering, Komatsu's innovative unmanned vehicle provides high-performance shuttling in both forward and reverse travel directions. Komatsu expects that this new vehicle will considerably improve productivity at mines

where existing unmanned haulage vehicles face challenging conditions, such as slippery ground due to frequent rain/snow fall as well as confined spaces for loading. Komatsu has led the world by commercialising Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) vehicles. First introduced in 2008, AHS dump trucks have since hauled over 1 billion tons of overburden and minerals at large-scale mines mainly in Chile and Australia. By continuing its efforts to optimise the performance of mining equipment, and by aggressively promoting remote control and unmanned machine operation, Komatsu will help its mining customers significantly improve their productivity when this new haulage vehicle hits the market in the near future.

KOMATSU WHEEL LOADERS - FINDING NEW FANS WITHIN THE FARMING AND THE AGRICULTURAL CONTRACTING SECTORS Ever since Komatsu distributor McHale Plant Sales first got the notion to pitch their WA wheel loader series at the farming and agricultural contracting sector, sales have taken off in a new direction not originally envisaged. Bred to handle the rough and tumble one associates with quarry operations and the needs of aggregates producers, Komatsu’s wheel loaders have found a growing appeal amongst the farming and agricultural contracting community. Equally at home in the grain store and silage yard as it is in the gravel pit and construction site, the WA320 – now proving popular amongst farmers and contractors alike – is a high-spec workhorse whose stand-out features continue to attract new admirers. In its distinctive Komatsu yellow and grey livery, the WA320 boasts features that include the latest Stage 3B EPA Tier 4 interim engine technology delivering some 10 percent lower fuel consumption. Variable traction control, a ‘smart loader logic’ system that adjusts torque according to need, electronicallycontrolled suspension, hydrostatic drive train, and operator comfort with air suspension and heated driver seat are amongst its many other attributes. Add to these a performance package that delivers a top speed of 38kph, bucket capacity from 2.8 - 3.2 cubic metres and an operating weight at 16,500kgs.

Latest names to join the growing band of operators are Ardee-based Aidan Sharkey (whose recent purchase replaces an earlier Komatsu unit bought in 2007), brothers Brendan and Seamus McGrath of Knockainey, Co. Limerick, Tom Kelly of Nenagh and James Geoghegan of Tyrellspass who favours a slightly smaller model, having recently taken delivery of a WA270. Remarking that “it does the job”, Aidan Sharkey said “though we use it mostly for silage work, we get a yearround return from it lifting seed, loading stone and soforth.” In similar vein, Tom Kelly was struck by its “power and traction” along with its “service and back-up support” and by its “comfort and visibility.” Commenting, Michael McHale, managing director of McHale Plant Sales said “with more and more farmers now opting to contract out their tillage and harvesting needs, greater pressure is being placed on contractors if they are to service demand that exists while working to expand their client base.” “Remembering that many of their services must be provided within a tight time frame, often made shorter by the vagaries of our weather, contractors know they must operate machines that are reliable and tough enough for the tasks they have to perform. It is these considerations that have led them to choose machines that were developed for tougher conditions” McHale added.

Aside from the highest resale value in its class, features driving sales are its low fuel consumption plus a host of standard items that includes a wide core radiator, reversible cooling fan which can be set and monitored by the operator, limited slip differentials, central greasing system and a smooth ride (with boom suspensions and heavy duty euros hydraulic quick coupler). Adding icing to the cake is its single lever joystick control with built in 3rd line operation and a forward / reverse selection switch, a Komtrax satellite/ monitoring facility and a Komcare package that includes complimentary servicing for 3 years/2,000 hours. With many already installed and earning their keep in contractors’ yards around Ireland, the drive by McHale Plant Sales to attract new customers for the WA320 is one that continues to bring results.

THE METSO LOKOTRACK LT106 –

BUILT TO DELIVER GROUNDBREAKING EXCELLENCE Combining 30 years of experience in mobile crushing equipment with 21st century materials and design, the Lokotrack LT106 mobile jaw crushing plant's introduction is a ‘giant leap forward in the mobile crushing industry’ – according to its Finnish manufacturer Metso. Billed as the ‘new generation of proven performance’, the LT106 is the improved successor to the world-renowned C106 jaw crusher – regarded by many as the industry benchmark in mobile crushing, with a proven track record in the toughest of applications. Process overview A primary crusher for recycling or rock-based material, the LT106, with a 1,060 x 700 mm (42” x 28”) feed opening, can be used as a first unit in a multistage crushing process or as a stand-alone unit in reducing applications. After material is fed on to its feeder by an excavator or wheel loader, the mobile plant’s two stage scalping section removes the fine substance which can then be guided to its main conveyor or side conveyor. Output material size is controlled by the crusher settings, whilst the crusher is hydraulically driven to ensure trouble free operation. Setting standards in mobility The LT106’s chassis design, with good clearance on both ends, enables safe and easy loading onto a trailer. Compact dimensions and agility on tracks mean lower transport costs between and within crushing sites. Its feed hopper sides, with a patented and safe hydraulic securing system and radial side conveyor ensure the unit is ready for crushing or transport within minutes.

Proven performance New features, including a radial side conveyor, high inertia flywheels and Metso’s IC700 automation system that utilises an ultrasonic material level sensor, are said to offer the best capacity and cost efficiency in the 40-tonne class. The new fuelefficient CAT9.3 Tier4, 224 kW (300 hp) engine with hydraulic drive ensures trouble-free operation and enables the direction of the crusher to be changed in the event of a blockage. A new engine layout and flywheel composite covers, together with spacious service platforms and excellent accessibility make daily operations safe and easy. Flexibility can be added with additional features such as a screen module and long main conveyor. Flexible and fuel-efficient Active setting control, screen module, Metso hammer and a wide range of other options give the Lokotrack LT106 unmatched process flexibility and the capability to work in the most demanding aggregate and recycling processes. A new hydraulic system, coupled with an environmentally friendly, low-emission engine means average fuel consumption – without compromising process flexibility, safety or the durability of the hydraulic drive – is 17–22 litres. Commenting, McHale Plant Sales director Tim Shanahan says the LT106 is a machine ‘built to deliver groundbreaking excellence’. “Its introduction takes production capacity to a whole new level, cutting operating costs and generating the highest customer value possible,” he adds.

METSO – THE ‘PRIMARY’ CHOICE FOR DUCON CONCRETE Right in the heart of Duhallow, minutes away from Kanturk and close to the Mallow/Killarney highway, is the Ballymaquirk headquarters of leading aggregates producer, Ducon Concrete. Well-known in North Cork and beyond – where their trucks have a highly-visible presence servicing worksites throughout the region – Ducon was amongst the first of a group of leading Irish quarry owners to purchase a Metso Lokotrack LT106 mobile jaw crushing plant to meet their production needs. Speaking to McHale News, Ducon managing director, Frank Healy says: "at our nearby facility at Ballyhest, Castlecor, where we produce some 300,000 tonnes per annum, the new LT106 is operating as the primary crusher, producing 12 and 20mm aggregate to be used in readymix and concrete blocks for the construction industry." A family owned company with over 30 years experience in the manufacture of concrete components for the construction industry, Ducon has grown from modest beginnings to become

page 18

one of the Ireland’s leading independent concrete manufacturers. Today, the company employs some 60 people. A familiar sight on Irish roads, Ducon’s fleet of trucks delivers readymix, blocks and aggregate within a 30 mile radius of the main Ballymaquirk manufacturing plant, while pre-stressed and precast units are delivered nationwide. The company also operates a sand and gravel pit in Coachford and a limestone quarry at Ballyhest. One of the first concrete manufacturers in the country to attain the ISO 9002 certification for all products, Ducon has always striven to provide quality products coupled with a first-rate service to its customers. Supplied by Metso distributor in Ireland McHale Plant Sales, Ducon’s new LT106 is a replacement unit for the LT105, which the company traded in. Also on its fleet is a Metso Lokotrack LT300HP cone plant and a Komatsu WA380 wheel loader.

METSO MOBILE CRUSHING TRAIN

GENERATES

550 TPH OUTPUT Founded in 1972, South Africa’s crushing, mining, drilling, blasting and mineral processing specialists, B&E International, know a thing or two when it come to stone crushing. Based in the Eastern Cape, their innovative use of Metso mobile crushing and screening products has put them way ahead of the curve when it comes to finding solutions that would streamline production, achieve volume and boost output. One B&E configuration that matched this requirement came in the form of a production train that consistently produces G1 road stone product at a rate in excess of 550 tonnes per hour (tph). Regarded as one of the first mobile trains in the region to achieve these volumes, the arrangement incorporates the first Metso Lokotrack 330D combination cone crusher and 11m” triple deck screen to be put into action on the African sub continent. Speaking to McHale News, Sandro Scherf, chief executive officer of Pilot Crushtec International – Metso Mobile’s sole Southern African distributor – describes the process around what he calls ‘this ground-breaking engineering achievement’. Conscious of the market position that Metso aggregates products and services enjoys in the Irish market, and of the fact that there is a number of sites where a similar set-up could have application, Scherf said “the train consists of four Metso products – 700mm dolerite feed material is first processed by an LT120 jaw crusher and then fed into a Lokotrack 300GPS secondary cone crusher which is capable of accepting material up to 320mm in size”. “In turn, this feeds a Lokotrack LT330D combination cone crusher and triple deck screen before quaternary crushing is completed in an existing Metso 9100 vertical shaft impact crusher” he said. Noting that cone crushers play complementary roles in obtaining production volumes of this magnitude, Scherf said that the Lokotrack 300GPS is capable of what he termed ‘a prodigious output’.

page 20

McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS

“Key to the success of the train as a whole is the LT330D combination product’s ability to process, screen and recirculate massive volumes of secondary material” he added. Both of the cone crushers were specially purchased by B&E to produce high volumes of aggregate for sale to its customers. B&E, which is expected to achieve a turnover of R1 billion in 2016, is an experienced user of Metso Mobile products, operating a fleet of well in excess of 40 units. According to Scherf, the company is noted for the prominent role it plays in a variety of industries, including mining, crushing and quarrying as well as producing its own static high volume mineral processing plants. The company’s director of plant and engineering, Ken Basson explains the solid reasoning behind their long-lasting relationship with Metso. “Combined with their ease of operation and inbuilt reliability, Metso products fit well with our business model as their characteristics and capabilities deliver the key factors essential to our operation’s high volume capacities” he said. “It is critical to keep unit costs as low as possible at

Issue 10 2017

the higher volumes as they can yield a cost effective competitive advantage.” Basson is also upbeat about the appointment of Pilot Crushtec International as regional distributor of Metso products – an appointment that parallels the appointment of McHale Plant Sales as Metso distributor in Ireland. “This is a welcome decision by Metso. We have been dealing with them for many, many years and they have an excellent track record which includes high standards of field service,” he concludes. It’s a standard that McHale Plant Sales strives to duplicate in Ireland where the reputation that Metso enjoys amongst leading quarry owners and aggregates producers is enhanced with every unit sold.

KOMATSU EXTENDED WARRANTY DELIVERING ADDED PEACE OF MIND Buying a Komatsu, you buy first class performance in all areas plus all of the warranty and back-up supports that the famed Japanese manufacturer provides – including an Extended Warranty Programme that delivers peace-of-mind well beyond the point when standard warranty terms expire. At McHale Plant Sales we understand the disruption a single breakdown can cause. Increased repair costs, idle personnel, machines, and equipment, loss of production, rental machine charges and disruption of schedules are all costs associated with improper maintenance of machines; a proven solution for this is Komatsu’s extended warranty programme. That’s why we are to the forefront in offering customers the protection of Komatsu’s Extended Warranty cover. Indeed, so popular is it amongst our customers that, in the year when we celebrated 20 years as Komatsu distributor in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales had the pleasure of being presented with a

prestigious Komatsu award for having achieved the ‘Best Extended Warranty Penetration for Komatsu in Europe’. The provision of extended warranty cover is seen by McHale Plant Sales as an essential consideration in every Komatsu sales situation and one of the vital cost-saving elements that every Komatsu customer can avail of. ‘Costly down time is something every operator wants to avoid’ Michael McHale said. ‘For that reason, we market extended warranty cover as a means whereby Komatsu owners can protect themselves against the unexpected burden that breakdown can bring by extending cover over the longer life of the machine. That way, customers can order up a repair without having to worry unduly about the cost of parts and a technician’s time.’ There are four Extended Warranty options available: o Option 1) Extended Factory Warranty: (EFW) o Option 2) Power line Plus Warranty: (PPW) o Option 3) Power line Warranty: (PLW) o Option 4) Power line-Parts only Warranty (POW)

MCHALE PLANT SALES – GEARED TO SERVICE AN EXPANDING INDUSTRY After carefully managing its way through the recent downturn, the construction sector can now look forward to a future that, hopefully, will see a return to growth in all areas. Despite the occasional cautionary warning, economic predictions are generally positive with Ireland predicted to have one of the fastest growing economies in the EU. Mindful of our appointment as distributors of some of the world’s leading manufacturers, McHale Plant Sales has been taking a responsible course – one that has seen us equip ourselves to service the demand that this growth in our economy will present. Since the last edition of McHale News, we have settled into our new headquarters at Rathcoole, on the southern approaches to Dublin city.

In tandem with our Mid-West office and administrative centre in Birdhill, our new East Coast base in Rathcoole puts us in an even stronger position to service clients in Dublin, the South East, Midlands and along the eastern coast into Northern Ireland. Through our Birdhill base, we have convenient access to our second largest city, Cork, and the entire South West, Mid-West, Western and North West regions. Thanks to the strategic positioning of our two centres – backed by our team of mobile technicians - customers of McHale Plant Sales are little more than one-hour distance from the expert support we are geared to provide.

MCHALE BRINGS ‘HIGH STREET MARKETING’ TO KOMATSU SALES Komatsu distributor McHale Plant Sales is bringing High Street marketing methods to the plant and machinery sector. Recently, the company announced it is marketing the popular PC138US-10 excavator - and reintroduced their PC210LC-10 excavator - on a price platform that sales director John O’Brien says ‘sees Komatsu move to meet market needs’. Price wise, the effect of this move sees the PC210LC-10 unit being offered significantly below the price the market normally expects it to cost. ‘This makes it one of the best-value machines on the market today,’ O’Brien said, ‘especially when one remembers that, after 5 years, owners could still expect to recover half its purchase price as a trade-in.’

KEEPING UP SO WE KEEP AHEAD As distributors for Komatsu, McHale Plant Sales must stay abreast of all that is happening in the industry and in the world of plant and machinery. By keeping up, we keep ourselves ahead so we can always give the best advice to customers! That means keeping fully up-to-date with all of the latest developments – those that are already released and in the marketplace, and those that are in the pipeline and soon to be unveiled (insofar as the constraints of competition will allow). By the same token, we fulfil our responsibility to Komatsu owners by making sure we keep ourselves fully briefed and ahead on all fronts. This is especially true in relation to features, enhancements and product innovations that are coming down the line - technical and design specifications, operator comfort features, and operational innovations that drive productivity and deliver more efficient and effective machine performance. As our pictures show, we do this by getting out and about, travelling to in-house seminars, conferences, product presentations, demonstrations and briefings. And we do it also by attending key international exhibitions where we can see, up close, what Komatsu is offering to the market, and what competitors are doing to try and keep up.

OWNERS SHOULD BUY ONLY CE-MARKED MACHINERY – INDUSTRY CAUTIONS Customers who purchase plant and equipment that does not bear the CE mark could be leaving themselves open to health and safety risks in addition to substantial loss and inconvenience when trading up against a new machine. That is the cautionary advice being given to customers by plant and machinery distributors, fearful that operators may not be aware of the fact that authorized distributors are prevented from trading in machinery that is not CE certified. Under EU regulations, all plant sold in Ireland must bear the official CE mark confirming its compliance with relevant EU regulations. ‘Back in the 1990s, there was a lot of non-CE equipment about but since then the problem has eased," according to one leading distributor,

Komatsu representative John O’Brien, sales director, McHale Plant Sales. “Nonetheless, it is important for customers to know that frontline distributors like ourselves are prevented from trading equipment that does not meet the CE standard”. “For that reason, owners who may have innocently purchased such equipment could be exposing themselves to a future loss of one kind or another” O’Brien said.

BUYING KOMATSU...

A DECISION BEST TAKING TIME TO TAKE Choosing an item of construction plant – an excavator, dozer, wheel loader or the like – it’s important you get your decision right, right from the word ‘go’. It’s okay in the case of a car – you live with your mistake for a year or two, and then you change course. It’s an entirely different matter in the case of construction plant – get it wrong and you could live with your error for longer...much, much longer. It’s a cautionary note that manufacturers like Komatsu have a duty to sound. As the market becomes ever more competitive, as more and more new brand names vie for a place in your purchases ledger, as more and more new colour schemes and gizmos are promoted as the latest answer to a maiden’s prayer, the advice we give is this: The day you buy is the day you sell. Buy well and the probability is you’ll sell well...buy badly or unwisely, and the likelihood is you’ll sell badly. Second-hand values will slump...trade-in values will evaporate. Meanwhile, you’ll have lots to ponder and pay for if build-quality lets you down...if down-time delays rocket up...if parts purchases cost you an arm and a leg...if warranty, technical support and back-up service falls short of what’s promised...and if, in the end, experience shows you got what you paid for. Thankfully, serious plant buyers know the names to look for. Komatsu is one. And there are others (like Volvo, CAT and one or two more) – machinery that is proven in the field...machinery that performs best on leading edge contracts...machinery that gets the big tasks on major worksites...machinery that scores best in every aspect and by every measurement...machinery that international buyers know and trust. So, when it comes to choosing the machinery you should buy...take time. Consider your every need and then prepare your checklist. Consider all the obvious things: Will it do the job? Does it give you the range of options that you need? Will it be reliable? Does it have good warranty cover with extended options? Will you have technical support, when and where you need it? Look at all the other matters that mean so much when the chips are down? Things like cabin comfort and ease of controls? Technical, emissions and environmental aspects? Intelligence features that help you extract maximum return from your investment? Ease of maintenance and replacement parts availability?

page 28

Then, when you have the headline issues covered, drill down under each heading and obtain the detail that you require. Then factor in the availability of things like finance, the disposal of the unit your new purchase will replace, the provision of supplementary or stand-in equipment at times of urgent need. Include too the reputation and standing that your supplying partner has within the industry. Then ask around and be guided by the knowledge and experience of others. Here at McHale Plant Sales, we want our customers to be satisfied. We delight in seeing customers pleased with their Komatsu and watching their loyalty to the brand develop over time. Delivering customer satisfaction is a bedrock aspect of our business. For that reason, you can be sure we’ll go that extra mile to ensure you’ll be happy with your new Komatsu.

McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS Issue 10 2017

CHECK KOMATSU – FROM WHERE THE OPERATOR SITS

When it comes to choosing an item of heavy plant – excavators, dozers, bucket loaders or suchlike – buyers will have their own order of preference when deciding on features and specifications. Performance in the field, cost of purchase and past experience with the brand will always rank highly. Technology in the form of performance monitoring, theft prevention and track and trace recovery are becoming increasingly important while emissions controls, environmental and fuel saving attributes will always score highly. Maintenance, ease-of-service, warranty, parts availability, technical support and resale value are also on a long line of influencing factors. But, who would think that an operator’s cabin and seat could be one of the most important features to be mindful of when choosing a machine? Knowing that a contented operator is a productive operator, who would have thought that an operator’s seat could be the key to increased profitability, improved worksite productivity and reduced contract duration? Indeed, who would have thought that an operator’s seat could help deliver higher standards of workmanship, enhanced levels of customer satisfaction, higher-class client recommendations and greater levels of repeat business whilst easing health and safety concerns, delivering job satisfaction, reducing absenteeism and cutting recruitment time and costs?

When one thinks about it, the comfort that an operator enjoys has a far greater importance than one would first imagine! Knowing that the seat of an excavator is no place for amateurs, especially when it comes to observing requirements under Health & Safety - and mindful also of the fact that good, experienced operators are extremely hard to find - it could be argued that the operator’s seat and cabin are the first things most essential items that a buyer should check. Remembering that the operator’s cabin is his dawn-todusk workplace, things to check include seat design, seat controls, comfort, posture, padding and springing. Other key considerations are the positioning of controls and their ease-of-operation. Other comfort items such as air conditioning, heating, ventilation, noise suppression, all-round visibility, in-cab radio and infotainment features should also rank highly on the buyer’s checklist. In all of these respects, Komatsu is a standard-setter. That’s why we at McHale Plant Sales invite prospective customers always to take time out to get to know their new machine....from the operator’s seat, of course!

SCHULL CONTRACTOR EXPANDS EXCAVATOR FLEET It isn’t easy to build a wall...especially one not built with blocks but hand-built with fine cut stone. It is especially not easy to build a new wall that, when finished, looks like it was constructed centuries ago. Yet, from general contracting to plant hire, that is just one of the services that Schull-based contractor Whelton can provide for clients. Throughout West Cork, examples of their workmanship is everywhere to be seen...west towards Goleen, Crookhaven and the Mizen and further afield within a wide arc that takes in much of what is Ireland’s largest county. Founded in 1975, initially to supply quarry materials, the business is geared to service projects within a 50 miles radius of its headquarters near Schull.

page 32

Today, the family-run firm handles domestic and commercial projects across the West Cork region, much of it involving civil works, land drainage, piers, slipways, landscaping, lawn renovations and horse riding arenas. Signs that construction activity in West Cork has been enjoying something of an upswing were evident in their decision to expand their excavator fleet with their purchase of a new Komatsu PC138US-10 unit. The move saw the specialist stone works contractor raise its total excavator fleet to six units, including one other Komatsu unit. Designed to work in confined spaces, this latest addition to the Whelton fleet was supplied with rock breaking and wood mulching attachments – proof that, in West Cork at least, Komatsu has the specifications and the gear to tackle the jobs that need to be done.

MEETING THE DEMAND FOR QUALITY USED EQUIPMENT

KOMATSU QUALIFIED USED EQUIPMENT SCHEME

To be successful in selling new machines, one must be effective in helping owners to dispose of the used equipment which is being replaced. That's the belief that has led McHale Plant Sales to develop a thriving used equipment sales division. Moreover, it's an indication of the added value that owners can depend on when buying Komatsu, Metso, Merlo or Zetor machines.

Komatsu Europe's qualified used equipment scheme has been described by their distributor in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales as a “remarketing initiative” that recognises the importance of the used equipment sector as a seedbed out of which future new machinery sales will be generated. Designed to deliver peace of mind to used equipment buyers, the scheme ensures that pre-owned Komatsu equipment meets the latest and highest standards of quality, value, reliability and fuel efficiency before being offered for re-sale.

Spurred on by high domestic and international demand for quality used plant and equipment, McHale Plant Sales employs an experienced team of sales professionals whose primary function is to source, refurbish, market and export pre-owned plant for worldwide use in major civil works, construction, quarrying and agriculture. Already a major part of the company's business, it is an area that general manager Denis McGrath and his team are determined to expand. 'Over the years, we have built up a global network of both buyers and suppliers with excellent contacts in countries as far apart as China, Middle East, Australia, South America, Africa and India, where demand for quality pre-owned equipment is high' says Denis. McHale's used equipment division supports new plant sales operations by finding new markets for used equipment acquired as trade-ins. In addition, the team actively source quality machines from current plant users and from other distributors which can be disposed of through the company's international channels. 'In this way, used equipment plays an important role in stimulating new unit sales whilst helping to ensure that plant operators in Ireland work with modern up-to-date machinery' Denis adds. Weekly and virtually without exception, the team at McHale post details of the latest portfolio of used equipment that is available for sale. Circulated to interested buyers worldwide, this information gives essential details of the equipment available, complete with factual pictures and truthful descriptions as to usage and condition. 'In every case, we carefully select, service, strip and prepare the machines to the very highest standard for delivery direct from our dedicated workshops in Birdhill and Rathcoole. This attention to detail and customer assurance is the bedrock of our used machinery business Please contact and the root of the excellent our Used reputation it enjoys' he says. Equipment Typical work carried out to a Department for high quality finish includes more information overhauling, repairs, lineboring, welding, fabricating, and fully respraying. Birdhill Co. Tipperary Tel: 061 379112

Following a 10-stage quality service plan set down by Komatsu, all pre-owned equipment selected by McHale Plant Sales for sale under the scheme must pass a stringent inspection and evaluation process, carried out by their Komatsu certified engineers. Throughout, detailed information about the operating history of each machine is fully checked against available Komatsu Komtrax data and service records. The Komatsu Qualified Used Equipment 10-stage plan includes the overriding condition that the scheme applies only to standard Komatsu used equipment. All work equipment is cleaned and greased and any required repairs, tune-ups, adjustments and refurbishments carried out before the machine is fully serviced with genuine Komatsu parts and oil. Only when the 10-stage programme is completed will the equipment receive a clean bill of health from Komatsu and be granted the “Komatsu Qualified” stamp of approval. With that in place, an initial assessment report is prepared to determine that the equipment is suitable for sale under the Komatsu Qualified scheme. When approved, a detailed tune-up service is carried out including engine pressure, hydraulics, working speeds and valves checks. Oil samples are taken to determine any abnormal wear including final drives, swing and other engines and hydraulics checks. The comprehensive inspection provided for, under the plan, involves a thorough engine check and examination of all fluid levels, hydraulic system and transmission, cycle times and fuel settings, including a Komatsu oil and wear analysis to determine the condition of all major components. Throughout, all necessary genuine Komatsu parts are fitted. Upon completion, the refurbished equipment is subjected to final testing before documented inspection and worksheet reports are submitted to Komatsu for approval. If no further abnormalities are identified, the Komatsu Qualified Used Equipment approval, with appropriate warranty provision can be offered. Described by McHale Plant Sales as “one of the most innovative developments in the field of pre-owned equipment marketing” the Komatsu Qualified scheme is intended to increase the value and reliability of used equipment whilst cutting operating costs. A stipulation is that only Komatsuappointed distributors can sell the machines with Komatsu warranty cover.'

ZETOR CELEBRATES

THE BIG SEVEN-O Zetor tractors – first produced in 1946 – have celebrated their 70th anniversary.

On 15th March last, flags flew high at the company’s Brno plant in the Czech Republic to mark 70 years precisely since the first three Zetors were produced there and delivered to customers. In August of the same year, the Zetor trademark was registered and the successful history of Zetor began to unfold. The first three model Z 25 tractors subsequently went into mass production at Brno leading to hundreds of thousands of the units being produced. Along the way, Ireland acquired an important place in the company’s history when, also in the late-1940s, the first Zetor models were imported and sold here. Now distributed by McHale Plant Sales, the brand is represented by a national dealer network that includes McHale’s own direct sales outlets at Birdhill and Rathcoole. McHale Plant Sales director John O'Brien pictured with a prototype of the new Zetor by Pininfarina which was presented to Zetor importers at a recent conference to celebrate 70 years of Zetor held at the company’s headquarters in the Czech Republic

page 38

Innovations in tractor design with which Zetor is associated include the concept of using unified parts and the introduction of the first security cabin with integrated rollover protection. Today, the Zetor product range comprises four models variants – the entry-level Major, mid-range Proxima, the powerful Forterra series and the high-powered, heavy-duty Crystal. Looking ahead, Zetor’s determination to boost demand for their products and expand its presence in international markets was flagged recently with their introduction of the Zetor by Pininfarina design study. Best-known for their work with Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and others, Zetor’s engagement of the legendary Italian motor vehicle design and engineering house underlines the role that design will play in Zetor’s brand future. A special logo commemorating their 70th anniversary will appear on all Zetor tractors produced this year.

NEW ZETOR CRYSTAL

BREAKS GROUND

As those who follow developments in the farm machinery sector know, Zetor is an established brand whose best years are yet to come.

four, slotting in alongside the Forterra, Proxima and Major ranges.

With the development of their high-powered, highstrength Forterra series, the emergence of their heavy-duty Crystal model, and plans in the pipeline for the release of new, more stylish designs from legendary Italian designers Pininfarina, the Zetor name is one that has an exceedingly bright future.

Characterised by its power, durability and effectiveness, the Crystal is the most muscular machine Zetor has ever produced. Its highperformance Deutz engine comes equipped with 24 valves and common rail injection and, according to Zetor, the engine’s constant power delivery increases productivity and lowers fuel consumption.

Poised to challenge the ‘big boys’ in almost every department, proof that Zetor has turned the corner towards an exciting new future is seen in the fact that sales of the all new, heavy-duty Zetor Crystal tractor have taken off.

Transmission is provided through 30 forward and 30 reverse speeds with the help of a three-stage torque multiplier (PowerShift), a hydraulic reverser (PowerShuttle) and a clutch button on the shift lever (PowerClutch).

First model sold in Ireland went into service on a Co. Antrim dairy farm, sold by Troughtons of Poyntzpass, a Zetor main dealer of over 30 years.

Other features include an extended wheelbase of 2,840 mm, Zetor’s HITCHTRONIC system, a spacious cab reducing noise to 73dB, suspended cab and axle, sunroof and stand out red wheels – a feature which Zetor plans to gradually extend to its full product range.

Reviving a model name originally made famous within the Zetor range between the years 1968 to 1987, the new 160hp Crystal won the Irish Farmers Journal ‘Best New Tractor’ in show award at the 2015 National Ploughing Championships. The Crystal is the first tractor in Zetor’s portfolio to feature a six-cylinder engine and its arrival on the market has increased the brand’s model range to

Being marketed to owners of larger farms and contractors who want to expand their fleet ‘without having to remortgage their homes’, Crystal puts Zetor in the driving seat in re-staking its claim to an even bigger share of the tractor market.

NEW ZETOR BY PININFARINA FARMERS ARE GOING TO LOVE IT, DEALERS ARE GOING TO LOVE IT Soon to arrive into Ireland, the new Zetor by Pininfarina will be one of the most attractive and sought-after tractors imaginable. Designed by the legendary Italian design house Pininfarina - noted for their work with auto makers Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Rolls Royce, to name but a few - the new Zetor by Pininfarina merges eyecatching appeal and ‘desirability’ with the fine engineering, ruggedness and build qualities that have sustained the renowned Czech tractor maker’s performance in world markets throughout its 70 years history. The talk of Agritechnica when it was first shown there in prototype form, this big, new powerful Zetor oozes eye-appeal.

Set to strengthen the brand’s global prestige and transform Zetor’s position on Irish and world markets, the new Zetor by Pininfarina follows style trends long evident in the motor industry to bring emotion, dynamism and style to what, traditionally, has been a purely functional item of farm machinery. Its most visual style features are its iconic new frontend bonnet and lights arrangement, its tilting and gradual forward-sloping hood, gracefully shaped side panels, cooling vents and clever use of twotone paint. As one industry observer noted: ‘When it arrives here, it will be one of the most stylish tractors on the Irish market - farmers are going to love it, dealers are going to love it.’

Speaking about the role that Komatsu plays in helping Priority to deliver solutions and service the needs of its clients, John McCarthy has nothing but praise.

‘80% Komatsu…’ ‘We currently operate nearly 20 Komatsu machines – 11 excavators, four dozers, three wheeled excavators and a WA320 wheel loader’. ‘Like most companies of our kind, we have a mixed fleet. However, it is safe to say that over 80 percent of our work is handled by Komatsu machines’. ‘Komatsu holds its value and their machines are very much in demand on the second hand market. A second and important attraction is their reliability,’ he said. ‘...when technical back-up was needed...McHale Plant Sales proved more than equal to the task’ Asked to describe ‘What Komatsu Means To Me’, John replied: ‘Across the board, they have given us first-class reliability and superb service with very little down time. On the few occasions when technical back-up was needed, their distributor McHale Plant Sales proved more than equal to the task’. ‘In practical terms, their knowledge of our industry and their level of awareness of the need to return machines to full operation with the least loss of time, are factors that have singled them out from others we have had to deal with down the years. ‘Their mobile service unit, their expertise and technical support and their stocking policy in terms of spare parts availability, are three of the major reasons why Priority Construction chooses Komatsu’.

Founded in 2006 and employing an experienced team of experts, Marine Specialist Limited is one of Ireland’s leading commercial diving and marine contractors specialising in a broad range of surface and underwater operations including salvage, underwater construction, dredging, pipe laying, inspection and demolition. Operating in what is a niche market - one in which their best work is often done operating from the confines of a moored barge - the Foulksmills and Ballymitty-based firm reflected the improving business climate generally by their decision to invest in additional plant with their purchase of a Komatsu PC360LR-10 hydraulic excavator. The new long-reach crawler excavator, fitted with a 3D GPS system, was purchased to replace a PC210-8 unit and will be employed on the expanding range of marine construction, pipe laying and dredging contracts being serviced by the company across the country. Speaking to McHale News, their managing director John McKeown - a Komatsu customer for more than seven years – said that their decision to purchase another Komatsu was influenced by the ‘reliability

KOMATSU...BRINGING THE GORT - TUAM MOTORWAY TO FRUITION As regular commuters on the road between Limerick, Galway and beyond will know, work is moving ahead on raising the Gort to Tuam section to motorway standard.

Equipping itself for the project, Roadbridge put together a mixed fleet of Komatsu machines that included wheeled and tracked excavators, articulated dump trucks and crawler dozers.

Winding its way through one of Ireland’s most beautiful landscapes, the new M17/M18 development will create 57kms of dual-carriage motorway that will be a major boost to commuters and tourists attracted to travelling along this busy western corridor.

A feature common to many of the Roadbridge machines is Komatsu’s latest ‘performance monitoring’ technology.

Seen as a significant access route to the famed Wild Atlantic Way, the motorway will reduce travel time between the major western cities of Cork, Limerick and Galway while improving access to major towns in the region. Included in the project are bypasses at Gort, Ardrahan, Kilcolgan, Clarinbridge and Claregalway, plus a 4-kilometres stretch around Tuam.

From the information collected from each machine, Roadbridge is better able to measure productivity, deliver greater efficiency, and make whatever adjustments may be necessary to keep in step with schedules. As the project advances towards completion, those who admire the work of the civil engineering contractor could ‘go west’ to observe how Komatsu and Roadbridge are working together to deliver what will be one of the most impressive motorway projects ever undertaken here.

A leading contractor on the project is the renowned civil engineering firm Roadbridge.
