NEWS CONTENTS Dear Reader:

W

e thank you, our customers and our readers, for your very valued support without which our 25 years working with Komatsu and the many other manufacturers we represent, would not have been the success they have been. More than a self-published newsletter, the purpose of our magazine is to keep readers informed of developments within our company and within our industry. Its additional purpose is to inform you of progress in relation to the products and operating environments in which we are active on behalf of those we represent. Its other main purpose is to report upon some of the many applications in which the machines we distribute are used, and to tell the stories behind their operation. As a communications piece, readers may also see it as a window through which the support and loyalty of our customers can be seen. Its publication comes in the year in which we celebrate 25 years as distributors in Ireland of Komatsu construction equipment – a cherished association that was strengthened further when we were assigned all-island responsibility for Komatsu Forest timber harvesting equipment. Also within its pages is news of our wider footprint, one that has seen McHale Plant Sales expand into new fields of activity in which we did not previously have a presence, alongside reports pointing to aspects of our own corporate development.

McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS

KOMATSU 2020 MODEL INTRODUCTIONS As customers themselves have long since known, the process of invention, the task of innovation, the quest to find new solutions and approaches, is one that continually occupies the minds of everyone in Komatsu. Only in that way can they retain their leadership position and protect their reputation as one of the world’s leading and most innovative manufacturers of construction equipment. As a result, developments currently in the pipeline will see a slew of new machines make their way on to the market in Ireland over the coming 12 to 18 months. Already operators have experienced the arrival of machines powered by Hybrid technology (excavators like the HB365LC-3 and the smaller HB215LC-3) and others equipped with Intelligent Machine Control (PC210LCi-11 for example). In both cases, customers purchasing machines with these features are putting themselves ahead of the curve on environmentally sensitive projects and on those where operational accuracy is pitched alongside economy of operation to deliver major projects with client-happy outcomes. But, like any forward-thinking manufacturer would, the process of invention has numerous other turns to take. Headlining products that are at an advanced stage of development will be the arrival in Spring 2020 of an all-new PC30 – a 3.5tonnes fully electric-powered mini excavator that balances power and performance where it really matters with climate-friendly rechargeable electric technology.

PC30 Electric Like all electric-powered equipment, including the family car, the new PC30, with its eye-catching design features, will deliver rechargeable, foot-to-the-floor energy tagged to sound-free operation. New to the Komatsu stable of mini excavators will be the PC26MR-5 and PC58MR-5, units likely to appeal to the utilities sector. Also due next year is the 8-tonnes WA97S-8 backhoe loader. Further up the scale, two expected newcomers will be the mid-sized PC290LCi-11 and PC360LCi-11 crawler excavators. The 30 and 40-tonnes machines will come fully factory-installed with Komatsu’s latest integrated Intelligent Machine Control system and will include stroke

New WA475-10 sensing hydraulic cylinders for the boom, arm and bucket, developed over two machine generations for precise real time bucket edge positioning. Also on their way are three new wheel loaders. One, a WA80-8 mini wheel loader and another, a WA475-10 model – perfectly configured for applications that call for a medium-range machine with the capacity, comfort and ease-of-handling needed for construction, warehousing and agricultural use. The next generation 24-tonnes unit is the first to feature the Komatsu-developed Hydraulic Mechanical Transmission (KHMT) and is a versatile performer with an EU Stage V engine. A third new wheel loader will be a revised WA800-8 model in which greater levels of comfort and Stage V technology engine will be amongst its key features. The first model upgrade since 1999, this latest 100-tonnes unit comes with a 20-tonnes bucket capacity. Another heavyweight due to make its way into Komatsu’s 2020 catalogue is a HD785-8 rigid truck.

PC360LCi-11

Aimed at quarry owners, aggregates producers, large civil and ground works contractors, this giant 100-tonnes rigid comes with all of the material strength, easeof-maintenance features and build-quality elements required to make it the stand-out machine of its class. Another heavyweight due to make its way into Komatsu’s 2020 catalogue is a HD605-8 rigid truck. Beloved of quarry owners, aggregates producers, large civils and groundworks contractors around the world, this giant 60-tonnes rigid comes with all of the materials strength, maintenance features and build-quality elements required to make it the stand-out machine of its type. Finally, not to be forgotten are Komatsu’s two motor graders, GD655 and GD675. Despite low unit take-up in Ireland, motor graders deliver a finer more finished quality grading than is otherwise easily achieved in other ways, as operators Howley Civil Engineering demonstrated in the course of their work on the new New Ross bypass.

ROADBRIDGE ADDS INTELLIGENT MACHINE CONTROL & ECO-FRIENDLY HYBRID TECHNOLOGY TO EXCAVATOR FLEET

Roadbridge commits to Komatsu Hybrid and Intelligent Machine Control: Roadbridge CEO Conor Gilligan pictured taking delivery of first units from McHale Plant Sales director, Michael McHale

Contractor Roadbridge has committed itself to hybrid and intelligent machine control with the purchase of new Komatsu machines for service on a number of high-profile contracts.

knowing the benefits it brings where it counts most – on the work site!

In a multi-unit deal, the company demonstrated its commitment to the ‘green’ cause by expanding its fleet with the addition of two HB365LC-3 and one HB215LC-3 Hybrids, all purchased last July.

Using intelligent machine control, operators have more accurate control of ground preparation. Automatically, the bucket is prevented from digging beyond the target surface, thereby maintaining grade automatically with real-time bucket edge positioning, both in relation to the machine and the job surface.

One month later, another important acquisition came in the form of a Komatsu PC210LCI-1, the first machine in its fleet equipped with Intelligent Machine Control Technology.

Other Komatsu machines that formed part of the Roadbridge purchase are four PC138US-11 short tail swing crawler excavators, two D65px-18 dozers, and two minis – a PC55MR-5 and PC26MR-3.

Likely to be especially beneficial in reducing fuel consumption and lowering noise and environmental impacts generally, Komatsu Hybrids are seen as ‘heavyweight excavators with a lightweight environmental impact’ whose ultra-low noise levels and significant fuel saving come by combining engine power with a proven hybrid mechanism whose battery output is kept charged by the machine’s own swing movement.

Commenting, McHale Plant Sales director, John O’Brien said: “by investing in latest machine technology, Roadbridge demonstrates the importance it attaches to self-reliance in matters of fleet availability and its function in promoting a strong, positive image for the company within the civil works contracting sphere”.

With contracts such as the new Dublin Airport runway and a road realignment project at Coolooney on the go, intelligent machine control has a great deal to recommend it, aside from the additional fuel-saving benefits that hybrid technology brings. Apart from the many attributes it will bring to its work, Roadbridge’s purchase of a PC210LCI-11 with intelligent control is proof positive of the confidence it places in the technology and a demonstration of the fact that large players in the industry are now buying hi-spec equipment

McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS

McHALE PLANT SALES CELEBRATING 25 YEARS WITH KOMATSU AND ALMOST 70 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE CONSTRUCTION & CIVIL WORKS SECTORS Falling, as it did, in the dwindling shadow of WW2, the 1950s was a decade when few but the far-sighted could have envisaged the opportunity that awaited those brave enough to embark on a new business venture. Amongst those adventurous enough to undertake the challenge were Michael McHale Snr., wholly supported by his young wife Bridget, late parents of company chairman and director, Michael McHale. In 1952, they founded the business that, over the intervening decades, was to become the McHale Plant Sales enterprise as it is known today. His plan when setting up the business was to service what was to become a burgeoning demand for new and used machinery. Under his guidance, and until his untimely death, the company operated successfully for more than four decades, his focus being on new and used machinery sales, supported by a degree of plant hire and owneroperated contract services. In September 1994, the business took a major leap forward when the company was appointed distributor in Ireland for Komatsu construction equipment. It was a development that transformed the business and became the springboard for all that was to follow. Now one of Ireland’s best-known construction plant distributors, Komatsu and McHale Plant Sales have become synonymous as the 25th anniversary of our appointment is celebrated. As Michael McHale himself put it: “our role in representing Komatsu is the very embodiment of everything my father could have imagined when he established McHale Plant Sales. It is a relationship that is very precious to us”.

Where the Komatsu story began: Michael McHale (left) seen delivering the first Komatsu sold by McHale Plant Sales (a PC180LC) to Dan O’Sullivan of O’Sullivan Plant Hire, Ardagh

Well resourced in all respects, the company has a formidable management team that includes co-owners Michael McHale, Tim Shanahan and John O’Brien and finance director Liam Foley, ably supported by a strong back-up middle-management tier expert in all facets of operations. Asked what has been the hallmark of McHale Plant Sales’ approach, one industry source was recently quoted saying: ‘without doubt, it is their understanding of the sectors they serve, their closeness to the people who buy their products, and their ability to expand gradually by building on their strengths in a controlled and measured way’.

PITCH PERFECT

From its twin locations in Birdhill, close to Limerick city, and Rathcoole, on the south-western approach to Dublin, McHale Plant Sales manages a comprehensive and diverse portfolio of international brands. Each one complementing the others whilst being sufficiently individual and diverse, they give the company a strong foothold in sectors important to Ireland’s future, not just in construction and agriculture but also in ecological and environmental development, waste recovery and recycling. In addition to Komatsu construction lines, brands handled by McHale now include Komatsu Forest timber harvesting machinery, Metso fixed and mobile stone crushing equipment used in quarrying and aggregates production, Terex Ecotec shredders and conveyors used in waste recycling and other applications, and Merlo telehandlers whose attractive and well-equipped units feature strongly in construction and agricultural applications.

It was a foggy day in Skibbereen but that did not prevent McHale Plant Sales News snapper from capturing this shot of a Komatsu D65PX dozer levelling the ground for a new Skibbereen AFC football pitch. With Komatsu on the job, it will be happy days ahead for this burgeoning West Cork club.

KOMATSU PLUS SYSTEM AND ON-GOING MAINTENANCE LOWERS OPERATING COSTS AND BRINGS BOTTOM LINE REWARDS WILLS BROS FINDS Careful attention to on-going machine maintenance is a discipline that can pay large dividends and reward owners in ways they may not imagine, as leading civil works contractor Wills Bros of Foxford recently experienced. In what McHale Plant Sales themselves called ‘an amazing’ return’ the company recorded 10,000 hours of operation from their Komatsu D65pxi dozer before track roller bushings and seals needed replacement. Two-and-a half times longer than the 4,000 hours Komatsu advises owners to expect replacement might be needed, the result achieved by Wills Bros is attributed to three key factors: their careful attention to ongoing undercarriage maintenance; the exercise of care in the way the machine is operated; the pay-off that Komatsu’s PLUS system (Parallel Link Undercarriage System) promises owners.

WILLS BROS DUMP TRUCK PURCHASE UNDERLINES CONFIDENCE IN KOMATSU Within the highly demanding world of civil works contracting, Wills Bros is one whose name continues to dominate. With a number of major contracts in the course of completion Wills Bros occupies an impressive position amongst the leading names in the Irish civil works and construction sectors. Their most recent investment was the purchase of five Komatsu HM400 - 5 articulated dump trucks, purchased, in part, for service with Gypsum Industries at their open cast mine near Carrickmacross where they are being put to use stripping out overburden and transporting it for use as back-fill elsewhere within the mine complex. With a maximum payload of 40-tonnes, the new HM400 dump trucks have an operating weight of 35-75.1-tonnes

Stressing that good undercarriage management encompasses all aspects of machine operation, McHale Plant Sales director, John O’Brien said: ‘knowing the bottom-line contribution that good maintenance can make towards cutting per-hour operating costs, Wills Bros must be complimented in doubling the operational return their D65pxi delivered’. In the case of the D65pxi dozer, a core feature of the Parallel Link Undercarriage System is its rotating bushing and dual seals concept. An additional bushing segment is fitted between the seals on each side of the chain whose centre pin can be remotely greased. Sprockets can also be changed individually, and by hand. As a demonstration of the value that is to be gained by combining the system with frequent and careful maintenance, the return achieved by Wills Bros in cutting per-hour operating costs and bolstering the bottom line is proof that ‘the West is very much awake’ O’Brien added.

Komatsu HM400 Dump Truck: The Perfect Choice

and are driven by a powerful 353/473kW/HP EU Stage V engine with an over-the-ground speed of 56-km/h. Said by Komatsu to be a ‘perfect choice for any jobsite, in any conditions’, this powerful and environmentally friendly dumper is praised for its first-class comfort, efficiency, safety and ease of maintenance. Standard is Komatsu’s unique Traction Control System which works fully automatically to give traction and superior steering performance in all ground conditions.

page 8

Commenting, McHale Plant Sales director John O’Brien said: ‘knowing the focus Wills Bros places on machine care and maintenance, these new units constitute a shrewd and valuable long-term investment that will underpin the company’s growth and serve its needs extremely well for many years to come’.

Under the guidance of its managing director, Pat Murphy, the company has established an enviable customer base that includes many leading names whose loyalty towards the company revels itself in high levels of repeat business. For a company whose focus is firmly fixed on delivering quality workmanship, it is perhaps natural that a major reinvestment in new plant and equipment would see Komatsu enter its fleet. Noting its philosophy ‘to continually keep its machinery updated in order to make sure that projects are a success

Komatsu: Helping Customers Put ‘Quality First’

and delivered on time and with efficiency’, the company recently purchased some seven new Komatsu machines – a PC360LC-11, two PC210LC-11s, two PC138US-11s, a PC55MR-5 and a PW118MR-11, the first one sold in Ireland. Serviced by a substantial workforce operating to a ‘can do’ principle, Connacht Contractors is renowned mainly for its work in the fields of demolition, ground works, civils, and formwork, their aspiration being to deliver projects on time, on budget and to a high quality. Always working within the limits it sets for itself, its varied list of projects includes a spread of interests from schools to hotel, industrial and FDI investments – work that Komatsu is built to deliver.

Komatsu Can Do: ...When It Really Counts!

KOMATSU - HELPING CAHALANE BROTHERS BUILDERS TO DELIVER EXCELLENCE Like the name ‘Cahalane’ itself – one famed in Cork GAA circles - Cahalane Brothers Builders is a company firmly rooted in West Cork where its imprint can be seen in numerous landmark projects throughout the region. Founded in the 1930s, Cahalane Brothers has chalked up over 75 years’ experience in providing a top quality and efficient service to its clients. Based in Dunmanway, birthplace of the legendary Sam Maguire, the strength and reputation of Cahalane Brothers is reflected in a broad and diverse portfolio of projects that includes developments in commercial, industrial, residential, retail, education, food and healthcare. Add to that, specialist work in fit-out, civil works and public works of various kind.

Enhancing its appeal to clients is the presence, within its management and staff, of operatives fully qualified and experienced in the academic aspects of construction and fully trained with the hands-on skills to deliver excellence in a completed project. Part of that excellence is seen also in the company’s decision ‘to invest in the best’, with its recent purchase of two new Komatsu excavators. The two units concerned - a PC138US-11 and a PC55MR-5 – are topspec models equipped with the features and fittings that Cahalane Brothers need to bring their business forward.

NEW KOMATSU PC490HRD-11 EXCAVATOR –

PUTS FOCUS ON DEMOLITION

As everyone who observes the changing landscape in our cities and elsewhere will note, demolition and the drive to achieve greater site utilisation has becoming the order of the day. The same can be said of house building in high-value suburbs where the temptation to ‘knock-andrebuild’ is a common feature. Latest machine to enter the heavy-duty demolition excavator space is their 60-tonnes PC490HRD-11 model (pictured). Designed with what is said to be a ‘best in class’ working height, the PC490HRD-11 operates as a single complete system, configurable in six different working arrangements to suit changing work demands. Strong enough to lift a 2t demolition tool to a height of 32m, a 3.34t tool to 28m, or a 5t tool up to 17.4m, its operating weight ranges from 55.2t to 73.4t driven by a Komatsu EU Stage V-compliant engine delivering 270 kW / 362 HP at 1.900rpm, with minimal environmental impact. Mindful of ecological concerns that govern the awarding of contracts – especially in low emission zones and urban projects – McHale Plant Sales director, John O’Brien, sees the PC490HRD-11 as a machine that ‘will allow customers demonstrate their environmental credentials and participate in more tenders thereby future-proofing their investment’. Described as a ‘game-changing’ machine, the PC490HRD-11 delivers smooth and convenient operation, high precision, great stability and first-class comfort that allows operators to work through the widest possible range of demolition contracts with optimal control and safety. Highly versatile in a number of key respects, it features Komatsu’s own-designed boom change system. Oversized

page 10

quick connectors for the hydraulic lines minimise backpressure and oil heating without restricting oil flow. Hydraulically powered pins, mounted inside the main boom structure, reduce damage risk. Its working range indication system means the machine can be operated to maximum effect through a full 360 degrees without compromising safety. Optional is a camera system located at the arm end that can display views of the working area to help avoid equipment damage. Ease of transportation – a major consideration with every machine of its size – is taken care of in a number of ways, the effect of which is to reduce its working width of nearly 4m down to below 3m for transportation purposes. Every section of the working equipment comes with tie down points and lifting eyes to allow the equipment to be lifted and safely secured on to a trailer while the machine itself has been kept as compact and light as possible. An optional hydraulically variable undercarriage makes it easy and quick to set up on site. Operator convenience is increased as the front screen wiper and the cab tilt functions can be triggered without the operator taking their hand off the main controls. Other elements amongst its array of features are a full colour cab screen displaying machine limits so operator keeps control at all times, KomVision surround view system, LED working lamps and a neutral gear detection system to help prevent unintended movement of the machine. As with all heavy-duty Komatsu machines, KOMTRAX telematics and Komatsu CARE maintenance support packages apply.

KOMATSU WA480-8 ANSWERS KERRY COMPANY CALL Operating from five separate locations across County Kerry – with a head office and concrete block yard in Killorglin, a readymix plant in Caherciveen, an aggregates facility in Dromid and another in Killarney, and a joint readymix and aggregates facility at Caragh Lake, near Killorglin – Michael F. Quirke & Sons can justly claim to be one of Ireland’s foremost building materials suppliers. In operation since the 1950s, this second-generation family-run business supplies quarry and building materials to customers throughout Kerry and into West Limerick and North Cork, building up a strong user base that has come to rely on the products their distinctive red and white coloured trucks deliver. Constantly seeking to expand their business, Michael F. Quirke & Sons are as much a part of the Kerry landscape as the Healy Rae family and the Sam Maguire Cup. With a product and services range that includes aggregates, sand and gravel, drainage stone, hardcore and filling, ready-mix concrete, concrete blocks and plant hire – approved and certified to NSAI standards – Michael F. Quirke & Sons is a name linked to numerous high profile developments. Spanning the spectrum from small one-off houses to farm roads and buildings to large scale commercial, industrial and domestic developments, they include amongst others, materials used in the 1960s building of the bridge to Valentia Island. Wise, as Kerry people are known to be, it was not surprising that the company would come to McHale Plant

Sales when choosing to upgrade their plant, replacing a unit with a new Komatsu WA480-8 wheel loader. With its various attachments, the WA480-8 is perfect for any transport, moving or loading job. Its versatility can also be seen in in quarry and waste handling applications. Describing the purchase as one that ‘adds extra performance and reliability to the quality service the company strives always to provide’, the 220 kW / 299 HP unit is powered by a Komatsu SAA6D125E-7 engine that delivers up to 15% lower fuel consumption and an outstanding combination of stability, breakout power and tractive effort.

HYBRID ADVANTAGE Exactly how good the performance of a Komatsu Hybrid is can be seen in those big names who, having purchased an initial unit, returned to purchase another, as a fleet addition or as an upgraded replacement. Amongst the first to embrace this new eco-friendly machine was Priority Construction with their purchase of two HB215LC-1 models in 2013 – now being traded back for a latest replacement HB215LC-3 version. Elsewhere in this magazine, stories report on the decision by Roadbridge to take the Hybrid route, while another respected owner is Murphy International of Newbridge.

pitching and winning new business, Hybrid owners know that hybrid and alternative energy excavators are quietly becoming the flavour of our generation. Apart from the very obvious claims made for these clean green machines, contractors know that having them in their fleet can give an important advantage when it comes to chasing contracts.

Evident in these decisions is the fact that buying Hybrid makes good business sense. Strengthening a company’s competitive position when it comes to

MERLO – MAKING IT BIG IN THE EMERALD ISLE The authoritative Earthmovers magazine said it: Merlo is aiming high in Ireland. And while the height of their ambition in the Emerald Isle is increasing with every sale, it’s a height comparable only in scale to the reach that Merlo telehandlers deliver.

Merlo... at home in every Irish setting

IRELAND LINK TO MERLO DESIGN A little-known fact that links Ireland to the design of the company’s first ever Merlo telehandler – the SM30 model introduced to the market in 1981 – has been uncovered.

Occupying a special place within the portfolio of products distributed by McHale Plant Sales, the Italianmade Merlo range is appealing to a growing body of Irish customers. Decked out in its distinctive green livery – blending perfectly against the backdrop of the Irish countryside – Merlo sales have been expanding as the features and benefits of its range become more widely appreciated. With its twin-pronged application – in construction and agriculture – Merlo is becoming increasingly popular amongst those seeking a telehandler that is built for the job with specifications that win-out in all departments. The availability of models equipped to meet the needs of construction and industrial users generally has helped McHale Plant Sales to add a number of high-profile users to its customer base. Two of the largest and most respected companies in their sectors – John Sisk and Priority Drilling – are the latest to add Merlo to their materials handling fleets. In both cases, the Panoramic model P40.17 was the one chosen from a 21-strong range whose features include Dynamic Load Control and lifting capacities from 3400kg to 4500kg with lifting heights from 7m to 18m. Other recent buyers were waste handling and recycling specialist Thorntons, civil works contractor NRS, Raven Mobile Homes and building, civil and marine engineering contractors, L&M Keating – the latter being Ireland’s single largest Merlo fleet operator.

Speaking with officials at the company’s headquarters in Cuneo, Northern Italy, McHale Plant Sales director, Michael McHale was intrigued to discover that, while visiting Dublin to attend the RDS Spring Show in the early-1970s, that the son of the original founder Giuseppe Merlo, Amilcare Merlo, known affectionately as “Mr Merlo” dined in a Dublin restaurant where, in the course of his meal, he took a paper serviette and on it drew outline sketches of what, in time, would become the first Merlo telehandler. Then, the Italian manufacturer had been focusing on the production of cement mixers (since 1966) and dump trucks (since 1970). Within a decade of his Dublin visit, the concept he envisaged while here had advanced and been transformed into what became the first Merlo telehandler. In design terms, the SM30 combined the performance of a forklift with the versatility of a hydraulic telescopic boom crane. Its design, exclusive to Merlo, incorporated features such as a rounded cab with curved windows, telescopic boom side-shift, double boom articulation hinge, and hydrostatic transmission with permanent integrated drive. With a heritage dating back to 1911, Merlo, as it is known today, was established in 1964 and remains a family enterprise founded by Giuseppe Merlo’s daughter, son and daughter-in-law. That the flash of genius its founder experienced while dining out in Dublin was to prove totally inspirational is seen in the fact that, today, Merlo telehandlers occupy No. 1 market position in Germany, Canada, Australia, Finland and Italy while, here in Ireland, sales continue to increase in both construction and agricultural contracting sectors. ‘Unfortunately’ according to Michael McHale, ‘history does not record if the choice of Merlo’s distinctive green livery was influenced by the ideas that came into Mr Merlo’s head while here in Ireland.’

MERLO – FROM ITALY TO HERE, DIRECT

Buoyed by a new direct supply chain arrangement, Merlo has set new growth goals for the Irish market. Ensuring that models destined for Ireland come directly here from Merlo’s manufacturing base in Italy, this streamlined distribution plan is already paying big dividends. Market leader in Germany, Canada, Australia, Finland and Italy, recent sales in Ireland have seen a TF50.8 model, fitted with a bucket and grab for use in waste handling, go into service with leading recycling specialist Thorntons. Another has seen a 40.30 MCSS Roto with 4-tonnes lift and 30 metres reach, supplied to leading civil works contractor, NRS.

for Merlo in Ireland is looking bright,’ McHale general manager and Merlo specialist, Denis McGrath adds. ‘Supported by the fact that Merlo has an equally strong appeal amongst builders and construction users and amongst agricultural contractors and the farming community, its drive for growth is focused on the brand’s ‘excellent residual value’ and on feedback that describes it as ‘a driver’s machine' McGrath says.

Other recent deals included a P40.17 to Raven Mobile Homes and two 45.21 MCSS Roto models to building, civil and marine engineering contractors, L&M Keating, a company ranked as Ireland’s single largest Merlo fleet operator. ‘Our tiered objectives for the brand in Ireland are to focus on competitiveness and intensify sales and marketing on-the-ground, Michael McHale says. ‘Our goal is to boost Merlo’s presence in farming, construction and waste processing helped by a significantly more streamlined delivery and customer care back-up service’. ‘With construction, farming and food production enjoying good times – and emerging markets such as waste handling and processing coming to the fore – the future

MERLO – THE KNOWLEDGEABLE CHOICE It happens in many walks of life: those who have the knowledge are inevitably the ones who make the knowledgeable choices. This is no less true in the plant and heavy construction machinery sector. Those who own and operate machinery are generally those who have the experience of knowing what it is they need and of having the expert staff required to make the best choices. Against that backdrop, it is especially interesting to note the increasing number of well-known names choosing Merlo telehandlers in preference to others. In recent times, builders John Sisk and contractors Rossmore Civils have added Merlo to their range – Sisk having purchased a new Merlo P40.17 earlier in the year and Rossmore Civils having chosen a Merlo P38.13 model in a multi-unit deal that included three Komatsu excavators, a PC210, PC138s, PC80 and a PC55.

Another highly respected Merlo owner, Priority Drilling, also operates a Merlo Panoramic P40.17 model whose 21-strong range boasts features that include Dynamic Load Control and lifting capacities from 3400kg to 4500kg with lifting heights from 7m to 18m. These follow recent sales to waste handling and recycling specialist Thorntons, civil works contractor NRS. Raven Mobile Homes and building, civil and marine engineering contractors, L&M Keating – a company already ranked as Ireland’s single largest Merlo fleet operator. Away from construction, farming and agri-contracting are two other fields in which Merlo is making a big impression. Latest Merlo P40.17 owner is Kildare-based Strawchip, a large family-owned tillage operation whose processing plant produces straw-based products used as bedding and feeds in various agri and equine markets.

MAN OF MANY PARTS

SEAL OF APPROVAL In its global reach and presence; its diverse range of models and the worksite applications they are designed to handle; and in its reputational strength, Komatsu attracts a discerning body of owners. Bestowing their own individual seal of approval on the brand, the many owners who have Komatsu working in fleets – in addition to those mentioned elsewhere in this publication – include Tower Civil Engineering of Tullamore (2x PC490LC-11 excavators), McCabe Earthworks of Carrickmacross (WA480-8 wheel loader), Wicklow-based Vincent Dempsey Plant Hire of Redcross (D65PX-18 dozer and 2 x PC360LC-11 excavators). Other committed owners include Hilltop Quarries of Carlow (PC360LC-11 excavator), John Munroe of Ballinrobe (WA480-8 wheel loader and a PC360LC-11 excavator) and Atlantic Plant Hire of Lissycasey, Co. Clare (PC360LC-11 excavator). MIGHTY MINI A Komatsu PC 09 mini digger pictured at McHale Plant Sales HQ in Rathcoole. With excellent visibility and operator comfort, this easy-to-manage digger, with its retractable rubber shod tracks, has all of the features needed to squeeze through narrow doorways and into tight spaces – a perfect machine for the rental market.

Because parts occasionally fail and need replacement, McHale Plant Sales gives priority to the maintenance of a well-stocked inventory. At the company’s East coast headquarters on Greenogue Industrial Estate, a stock of circa 10,000 line items is constantly maintained so that urgent cover can be provided for customers in the event of a parts failure that requires replacement. Covered are parts for Komatsu excavators, dozers, dump trucks, wheel loaders and other construction equipment, plus Komatsu Forest timber harvesters and forwarders and all of the other lines that McHale Plant Sales represents – Metso fixed and mobile stone crushers; Merlo telehandlers and Terex Ecotec shredders. Responsible for this complex operation is Dubliner, Frank Desay whose role it is to oversee every part, every component and every accessory that goes into keeping machines in tip-top working order. A true professional whose expert knowledge and experience are reflected in the numerous awards presented to him, Frank is methodical in all matters

with an almost photographic memory when it comes to recalling part numbers. A graduate of the Komatsu parts university, he relishes the logistical challenges that his role presents. “No part lasts forever. When a part breaks and an item needs replacement, customers want to limit machine downtime as much as possible" he said. “For that reason, we maintain good stocks of fast-moving items backed by overnight delivery from Komatsu’s European parts headquarters in Belgium”. Frank’s relationship with Komatsu began as a mere 16 year old. Asked if his career-long experience with Komatsu makes a difference in his day-to-day work, he noted: ‘knowing our products as I do, I can predict the parts stock we will need from one end of the year to the next. In Spring, it’s one thing while, in Winter, it’s another – generally lights, batteries and so forth’. Living near Lucan village, Frank sings tenor in his local church choir, his other passion being for classic cars.

KOMATSU ‘REACHES OUT’ WITH BEARA CONTRACTOR, HARRINGTON PLANT HIRE In reaching out beyond the normal, or hitting heights above and beyond, the model designations ‘SLF’ and ‘HRD’ have special meanings in the world of Komatsu excavators.

excavators make an unrivalled contribution – evident in their ‘HRD’ model designation - is in the field of demolition, as reported elsewhere in this publication.

In the case of Eyeries-based Harrington Plant Hire, the requirement was for an excavator that could handle their various needs as a civil works, gravel, crushed stone, readymix, forestry, plant hire and agricultural services contractor. Their requirement was for a machine that could handle the many and varied uses likely to arise in a region as remote and as challenging as the Beara Peninsula.

As our story earlier shows, latest newcomer from Komatsu is the highly versatile 60-tonnes PC490HRD-11 model with its ‘best in class’ working height. Operating as a single complete system or configured in six different working arrangements to suit changing requirements, the PC490HRD-11 has an operating weight ranging from 55.2t to 73.4t and is strong enough to lift a 2t demolition tool to a height of 32m, a 3.34t tool to 28m, or a 5t tool up to 17.4m. Power comes from a Komatsu EU Stage V-compliant engine delivering 270 kW / 362 HP at 1.900rpm, with minimal environmental impact.

There, in that remote and charming West Cork village – close to Allihies and what was once a copper mining region - dwellings are delightfully painted in contrasting colours that are as diverse as demands for a versatile excavator might be. Nowhere might that be so than in the bustling harbour and fishing port of CastletownBearahaven (to give it its full spelling). Expert as Michael Harrington and his team are when it comes to matters of a maritime nature, their work might include the need to dredge beneath the water to install tidal defences, recover lost equipment, or assist in the construction of piers and foundations. With a major harbour development on hand, company principal Michael Harrington looked to McHale Plant Sales to purchase a Komatsu PC360LC-11 SLF. What made it special and uniquely appealing to them was its 22-metres long reach – sufficient to allow Michael and his company to satisfy the frequent need for a machine that can plumb the depths from a pier-side position. Another application for which Komatsu long-reach

HMT – LATEST INNOVATION FROM KOMATSU

BUYING PRE-OWNED ‘COULD BE THE PATH TO A SELFEMPLOYED CAREER’ Buying pre-owned plant and equipment could be the path to a career as a self-employed sub-contractor, or the doorway to a new life as an independent operative or equipment hire specialist. That’s the view of McHale Plant Sales general manager Denis McGrath. With a portfolio of pre-owned equipment under his care, McGrath services an international user base interested in acquiring machines he can provide. A benefit that used machinery buyers have when dealing with McHale is : as a reputable distributor for world-leading brands, the company has a reputation to protect. “We cannot market sub-standard machinery – a fact of which buyers are well aware” McGrath said. “Where a machine might have passed its best, this will be made known” he added.

Described by Komatsu as ‘a unique solution for tomorrow’s challenges’, HMT – short for Hydraulic Mechanical Transmission – is the latest innovation from Komatsu. Demonstrated recently to an audience of distributors including representatives from McHale Plant Sales - at France’s legendary Le Mans 24hrs race circuit, it was evident to all that HMT will have a major part to play in Komatsu’s future. Fitted to the latest WA475–10 wheel loader, those present were shown that HMT, Hydraulic Mechanical Transmission, enabled the WA475-10 to deliver more power whilst being more efficient in its fuel use. Thanks to a variable speed and traction control, top speed is adjustable throughout its entire speed range, in accordance with the conditions of the job site, while variable traction control limits wheel spin in difficult ground conditions. By dispensing with the need for a torque convertor, the WA47510 could carry 20 percent less fuel while the HMT system delivered some 17percent better fuel consumption. As McHale Plant Sales director, John O’Brien observed: “powered by an EU Stage V engine and covered by a 5 years or 10,000 hours warranty, the next generation WA475-10 wheel loader with HMT proved to be a very versatile performer”. “Built on the recognized benefits of its predecessor, it has the appeal of being up to 30% more fuel-efficient and is perfect for any moving, transport or loading job, combining outstanding fuel efficiency, productivity and ease of operation” O’Brien noted. “Hydraulic speed can be independently controlled, directly from the accelerator pedal, making it easy for the operator to find the right balance between traction and lifting power. The optimized Z-bar linkage system provides much more lift force and a higher tonnes-per-hour production rate while lift speed and class-leading machine stability help boost productivity, especially in narrow-space loading applications” he added. More operator-friendly and spacious, with an internal noise level of just 70 dB, the new cab has all-around glass that contributes to perfect visibility, and rear-hinged door, angled steps and large handrails for easy and safe entry and exit.

page 18

As regards the start-up buyer, McGrath notes that a certain number of customers seeking to buy quality used machines are employee operators seeking to go-it-alone as an independent operative, supplying main contractors with an all-inclusive machine-with-operator arrangement. “This is particularly so amongst those coming from small rural communities where the services of a local operative are often needed” McGrath notes. “Frequently it may involve small building and site clearance work, utility, sewage and land draining, plus the multiplicity of everyday uses that arise in any rural community”. “Those considering ‘going-it-alone’ with an excavator or digger would be advised always to dip into the used machinery market. There, people will be happy to impart information regarding the condition, features and benefits of machines available for sale, and to do what may be necessary to provide information on financing” McGrath advises. As regards warranties, though buyers dealing with a reputable distributor can be assured of receiving proper advice and information concerning a machine’s past, the principle of ‘caveat emptor’ always applies, given that no sales person will ever know the full story relating to a machine’s history. “Where a machine was previously owned by someone we know pays attention to maintenance and suchlike, we would always hope to be able to give a buyer whatever assurances we can” McGrath said. ‘However, where we cannot, we would always be straightforward, mindful of the reputation we are bound to protect. Buying new, Komatsu customers have the comfort of knowing that McHale Plant Sales can accept trade-ins for resale through its on-going contact with an extensive network of local and international buyers on the lookout for quality used machinery. METSO METSO A ‘WHO’S WHO’ PRIDE OF DUHALLOW & OTHER PLACES OF CRUSHING

‘There is a tide in the affairs of men which, when taken at the flood, leads on to fortune’. Were he still alive, onlookers might argue that Shakespeare had Metso and McHale Plant Sales in mind when penning these words. By any measure, the coming together of Metso, with McHale Plant Sales and the many high-profile producers whose stone crushing needs are met by Metso, was a development that has brought good fortune to all sides. Looking across the landscape of Metso users, one sees a ‘who’s who’ of Ireland’s leading quarry owners, aggregates producers, plant hire and crushing contractors. Prominent amongst them is Monaghanbased McCabe Earthworks whose fleet includes a Metso LT120 machine and an LT7150VSI Vertical Shaft Impactor unit. At nearby McCabe Plant Mile River, three Metso machines are working in sequence with each other producing aggregates of various size for a range of uses, models being an LT106, an LT300HP and an LT200HP. Five other important operators who have thrown their weight behind Metso are Hilltop Quarries in Kilkenny with two Metso machines in their inventory – an LT106 and an LT1213S – and CRH with an LT116 jaw crusher. West of the Shannon, Mayobased John Munroe Crushing & Screening operates an LT1213S impact crusher: Clare-based Atlantic Plant has an LT106 jaw crusher; while, in Bruree, Drilltech has also included a new LT106 jaw crusher in its line-up.

In their distinctive sandstone and tan livery, Metso crushers are becoming an even more familiar sight at plants around Ireland. Metso crushers come in mobile and fixed units, optimised for any size reduction and to satisfy the demands of every crushing plant and process. One prominent Metso user is Duhallow-based aggregates producer and concrete products manufacturer, Ducon. Based at Ballymaquirk, outside Kanturk where it operates a concrete products manufacturing plant, Ducon also maintains a limestone quarry at nearby Ballyhest, and a sand and gravel pit at Coachford. Proudly amongst the first of a group of leading Irish quarry owners to purchase a Metso crushing plant, Ducon is now a committed user. Commenting, their managing director, Frank Healy said: “our first Metso was an LT105 model since replaced by a Lokotrack LT106 mobile jaw crusher. Based at our Ballyhest quarry, where we produce some 300,000 tonnes per annum, the LT106 operates as the primary crusher, producing 12 and 20mm aggregate used in readymix and concrete block making”. Also part of the Ducon crushing inventory is a Metso Lokotrack LT300HP cone plant. As though to underline the operational reliability that Metso is delivering, this unit is slated for replacement by a similar machine. Here, the international reputation Metso has as a manufacturer and supplier of crushing and screening equipment is reflected in the growing body of top rank customers who operate their equipment – good for a company that has been manufacturing crushers for over 100 years, and good also for a range that includes jaw crushers, gyrator crushers, cone crushers, and impact crushers. Away from Duhallow, Metso is also a familiar sight at plants operated by Cement Roadstone, McCabe, Drilltech, Atlantic Plant, Munroe and a host of other leading aggregates producers – proof that, as one commentator noted, ‘when it comes to buying the best there is, it’s the best who buy them!

TEREX ECOTEC SHREDDERS ANSWER TO MATTRESSES AND OTHER WASTE MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES

Comfortable to sleep on, mattresses are one of the most taken-for-granted items of household furniture. Beneath their quilted exterior is a complex arrangement of springs, linings, padding, pinning and protective coverings, brought together and assembled in a manner designed to deliver a comfortable and restful sleep. Sometimes housing up to 5,000 individual springs, brought together and secured inside their own individual fabric pocket to create a sprung base, mattresses envelop and support the body as it moves and twists during sleep. But, what happens once its life has ended? Where does a mattress go? Answer: To the local dump, most likely, and onwards into the mouth of a Terex Ecotec shredder to be broken down into recyclable parts! To protect consumers against the possibility that a waste mattress would be stripped apart, its springs and linings saved and reused to produce a low-cost, reconditioned, looks-like-new replacement, waste specialists and local authorities are equipping themselves with machines such as Terex Ecotec produce.

page 22

As the photo (above) shows, machines like the Terex Ecotec TDS 820 will devour a mattress in seconds, eating it up and reducing it down to shredded waste that can be used for other productive purposes. As distributor for Terex Ecotec in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales brings world-leading technology and know-how to the task of managing environmental waste and reducing the hazard it can cause. As every waste processor, county and city council knows, effective waste management requires investment in equipment designed to do the job. With a Terex Ecotec TDS 820 shredder, municipal waste can be disposed of and recycled in an environmentally acceptable way by converting its constituent parts into reusable raw materials. Demonstrating an enlightened approach to the problem of waste management, it is an approach with which local authorities and waste processors are fully in tune. As McHale Plant Sales general manager Dennis McGrath comments: “living as we are in the age of reclaim, recycle and reuse, Terex Ecotec industrial shredders are becoming a necessary and versatile item of equipment for many, even beyond the specialist world of waste management”

TEREX ECOTEC APPOINTMENT PUTS MCHALE PLANT SALES AT HEART OF THE WASTE RECOVERY AND RECYCLING INDUSTRY With the world now focused on climate change, global warming and all of the other challenges they present, the appointment by Terex Ecotec of McHale Plant Sales as distributors in Ireland for their range of industrial shredders and waste management products was indeed timely. Produced in N. Ireland by renowned US industrial equipment manufacturer, Terex, the brief given to McHale is to represent Terex Ecotec across Ireland, north and south. Opening yet another avenue for the company, Terex Ecotec industrial shredding machines are designed and equipped for the tough tasks they must perform. At their heart is a complex arrangement of revolving drums, fitted with the tough cutting edges that can devour even the toughest materials and reduce them to fragments. Four units make up the Terex Ecotec shredder range: the TDS820, TDS V20, TBG 620 and TBG 630. Complementing the important work shredders do is the similarly wide Terex Ecotec range of trommel screens.

Highly efficient, trommel screens can be seen used in numerous applications such as the separation and processing of wood chips, topsoil, compost, light demolition waste, domestic waste and aggregates. Models making up the Terex Ecotec trommel screen range are the TTS 520, TTS 520E, TTS 520-3, TTS 620 and TTS 620T. Complementing these are the Phoenix 1600, Phoenix 2100 and Phoenix 3300 trommel screens and TRS 540 and TRS 550 recycling screens. Opening up a whole new world for McHale Plant Sales, Terex Ecotec equipment has, in the words of director Michael McHale, “positioned the company at the very heart of what is destined to become a ‘warrior industry’ in the recovery and recycling of materials whose use has become a threat to the environment globally”.

With their large rotating drums, trommel screens are used to separate out foreign matter that may have become embedded in the material being recycled for reuse. For example, in the recovery of waste being prepared for use as compost, the trommel screen will separate out unwanted materials such as metals, stones and suchlike. By that process, all fines can flow down and through the trommel screen plates and set aside.

TOP-OF-THE-PILE TEREX ECOTEC CONVEYORS TAKE THE LABOUR OUT OF LIFTING & LOADING Included in the six-strong Terex Ecotec range currently on offer are four new conveyors recently introduced alongside two self-powered tracked versions - 65ft and 80ft units with conveying capacities of 400tph - which continue to form part of the conveyor products offering. Building on the successful TSC 65T and TSC 80T models, the new conveyors just announced are a TSC 100T, TRC 75, TFC 75 and TFC 75L. Self-powered, the TSC 65T is a 65ft tracked stockpiler whose features and conveying capacities are impressive – one being its intelligent design which allows the machine to be folded small enough to fit inside a 40ft container and be shipped cost effectively. The track in and out design lets operators simply track the machine out and fold into a working position to start conveying material. Hydraulic angle adjustment and belt speed adjustment ensure optimum performance in every application. A maximum discharge height of 8.7m (28’ 6”) and capacities of up to 400tph position the TSC 65T as a leader in the industry. With its increased conveyor length and power, the TSC 100T conveyor delivers maximum mobility and flexibility while reducing or eliminating the use of wheeled loaders onsite. The TSC 100T can cope with all applications and although 100ft long it can still be transported globally within a 40ft container.

page 24

The TRC 75 is a Tracked Radial Stockpiling Conveyor. An ideal solution for stockpiling material from primary/secondary shredders and screens, it eliminates the double handling of material onsite. In practical terms, it can cater for a range of applications that includes compost, C&D waste, sand and gravel, topsoil and waste wood. The TFC 75 High Level Feeder Conveyor is a robust, high capacity hopper feeder that gives operators the ability to directly discharge from wheel loaders/excavators. Fully mobile, the TFC 75 allows a controlled feed of material into shredders and screens. “By comparison, the TFC 75L low level Feeder conveyor allows operators to directly infeed material at a significantly lower height compared to standard hopper feeders, a feature many operators will appreciate when operating in inhibited or restricted areas” McHale Plant Sales GM, Denis McGrath says.

WICKLOW BROTHERS PRAISE KOMATSU FOREST MACHINES IN IRISH FARMERS JOURNAL INTERVIEW

Wicklow brothers, Pat and Andrew Doyle are men who know more than a thing or two about timber harvesting machinery.

Highly praised (‘fabulous’) was its LED lighting package that produces a clear white light that ‘makes working into the dark winter evening much easier’.

In forestry since 1982, they recently gave an interview to the Irish Farmers Journal in which they spoke extensively about their work and of taking delivery of a new Komatsu 931XC harvester.

Spending over 2,000 hours in the cab each year, the Doyles complimented the operator comfort and visibility offered by the Komatsu Forest machines, Pat saying: ‘the control layout and visibility are second to none’.

Based in Annacurragh, with an operating reach that extends through Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford and Kilkenny, the two seasoned operators talked about their first purchase of a new Komatsu 901 harvester in 2016 and their subsequent purchase of another new 901 harvester and a new 835 forwarder.

Fully automated to cut to the required length and diameter, they heaped high praise on its computer system that they said ‘is very easy to navigate through’.

Despite having owned almost every brand of forestry harvesting equipment on the market, Pat and Andrew spoke glowingly about their experience with Komatsu. Referencing their new 931XC harvester, their comments were universally positive, save for some very minor items they would like to see improved. Amongst their list of ‘likes’ was its ‘super’ visibility; its ‘comfortable working environment’; its abundance of engine power; fuel efficiency; ‘very fast’ hydraulics; and ‘great’ cooling system.

page 26

A feature they really like is its keyless system that can control the heating and main circuit breaker/lighting remotely. “The machine can be set up to run the heaters for the cab and the oil, which clears the windows and warms up the water temperature, meaning the machine is ready to get straight to work once the operator arrives” they noted. Happy with the hydraulics - the 931XC is equipped with Komatsu’s three-pump hydraulic system - the Doyle brothers had high praise for its cab and crane that can be rotated 360 degrees, and with its stability when lifting logs with the crane at full reach. Appealing also is its self-levelling cab function “that allows the operator to be always seated on the level”.

DEEP IN THE FOREST KOMATSU FOREST IS MOVING TO THE ‘TOP OF THE TREE’

Deep in the forest where the process of timber thinning, felling and forwarding is ongoing, one range of machinery has been making its way to the top of the tree as the contractors’ preferred choice – that which is manufactured by Komatsu Forest. Allying a tradition and knowledge developed and honed in the great forests of Scandinavia to the reputation for excellence and build quality that Japanese-manufactured equipment and other products have, Komatsu harvesters and forwarders are the machines most often heard as many of Ireland’s leading timber contractors go about their business. Backed by strong double-digit sales last year alone, the outlook for the future can only be positive as Coillte, Ireland’s state-owned forestry enterprise (and large forestry owners in their own right), gear up for a future in which forestry is set to rocket up the scale of national priorities. Driven by the need to order our own affairs as regards emissions and climate warming controls – a battle in

which forestry will be to the fore globally – and by the social, environmental and job-creating contribution that forestry makes, tree planting must surely accelerate. In their familiar red livery, Komatsu Forest 9-series harvesters and 8-series forwarders have been carving a path in a national programme skilfully overseen by Coillte aimed at creating an even more significant natural resource for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations. In that respect, Komatsu Forest and McHale Plant Sales are proud to be playing a hugely supportive role – not just in the development of top-class machinery but in the on-the-ground technical and service support that contractors need to keep going. Big name contractors who have recently added Komatsu Forest to their equipment inventory include Seamus McKelvey from Donegal (with a 951 harvester and 855 forwarder), Jimmy Codd of Millpond in Kilkenny (another 951 harvester buyer), Camross Transport in Laois (a 901xc harvester and 835 forwarder), Pat Doyle from Wicklow (931XC harvester) and Willie O’Dwyer from Kilkenny (two 901XC harvesters and an 835 forwarder).

KOMATSU CUSTOMER-FOCUSED CULTURE

Pictured with one of the red-coloured Komatsu harvesters used to fell, strip and cut each tree for onward transport to the sawmill is Mitsuru Ueno with McHale directors Tim Shanahan, Michael McHale and John O’Brien. A reassurance for those who operate Komatsu equipment - whether deep in the forest or on the construction worksite - is the close interest the company and its management take in all markets.

In addition to meeting staff and viewing the facilities, the visit provided an opportunity for all sides to enjoy a highlevel exchange on matters pertaining to the progress of Komatsu in Ireland.

With a 25 years relationship as distributor for Komatsu in Ireland, this is no less true in relation to the work we in McHale Plant Sales do, and the service support we provide for all Komatsu owners.

Through contacts of that kind, Komatsu owners can be reassured that they are an important and strong link in a chain that runs from the machine designer’s desk, through McHale Plant Sales, and onwards to their worksites, wherever they may be.

For Komatsu people, a market visit to Ireland from Japan or from a nearby European base is an essential element in the process of maintaining hands-on contact.

Therein lies the heart of Komatsu – and the customerfocused culture upon which every owner can rely

It was in that vein that a delegation from Komatsu Forest recently visited the McHale Plant Sales facility in Rathcoole led by its President and Chief Executive Officer, Mitsuru Ueno. Coming to McHale Plant Sales, customers can be assured of many things: our determination to be the very best at what we do... our deep knowledge of the sectors in which we operate...our experienced advice and support in all areas...our dedication in evaluating and appreciating the very varied needs of customers...our complete understanding of the machines we sell to meet them...and our commitment to support customers in line with the reasonable expectations they would have of those manufacturers we are honoured to represent.

FORESTRY

AN EVEN BRIGHTER FUTURE BECKONS Reading mainstream media, it is clear that forestry has an even brighter future. Supporting a prediction already made by McHale Plant Sales, prominent writers on farming topics are pinpointing forestry as economically beneficial and a key weapon in our battle against climate change. And, who but Ireland is better placed to grasp that opportunity? In a recent edition of the Farming Independent, editor Margaret Donnelly wrote: ‘Forestry is by far the easiest and best method of carbon sequestration and there is no reason every farm in the country can’t do more’. ‘Further, if managed correctly, it can become a valuable amenity and an attractive business proposition’ she said. Closing, she ended with the view: ‘It is time for the Government to restructure its forestry policy and make it attractive for all farmers to plant some of their ground, rather than concentrating planting activity in parts of the west and northwest’.

Elsewhere in the same edition, two other forestryrelated reports appeared: one, an article setting out proposals that, if implemented, would ‘halt hike in forestry objections’ in order to speed-up the planning and planting process, and, two, another from a speech by An Taoiseach in which he is quoted as saying ‘ambitious post-2020 CAP reform programmes involving biogas and forestry could be the solution to reducing agricultural emissions’. The emphasis now being placed on forestry and forest planting is surely good news for our forestry body, Coillte; for timber harvesting and forwarding machinery makers, Komatsu Forest and their distributors, McHale Plant Sales; and even better news for climate action campaigners, farmers, foresters, timber harvesters and contractors, and all involved in the timber processing sectors.

KOMATSU – TOUGH ENOUGH TO CARRY OUT THE TASKS FOR WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN MADE

As time moves on, tastes change! Often we can see that change reflected in the design and appearance of construction machinery. Looking across the construction plant and equipment sector as a whole, we can see new design trends emerging. On many machines, corners and edges that were once bold and square and definite are now more rounded, more streamlined, more aerodynamic. Overall, design changes are often driven by alterations to a machine’s structure, as in the case with the zero tail swing excavator. In other cases, design changes are brought about by the need to provide easier and more convenient maintenance access to the engine and components, or to improve visibility and cabin comfort. As a leading manufacturer, Komatsu is helping to drive this trend, mindful that customers are not immune to the desire to operate the very latest fleet. But, for those whose thoughts might transport them back to what could be called ‘the good old days’, the visual appeal that a machine might have

For those plant men who grew up marvelling at the power of a RustonBucyrus tracked shovel, with its ropeoperated scissors arms and slam-shut bucket back, or were fascinated with the power and reach of a dragline excavator, these are amongst the current generation of machines with that ‘does what it says on the tin’ appearance.

can often be reflected in a ‘retro’ look appropriate to the nature of the work it was built to do. Within the Komatsu range, a couple of models stand out above others. One is the giant 930E (pictured) – billed as the world’s best selling haul truck and the flagship of Komatsu’s haul truck range. Another is the Komatsu D-series of dozer (also pictured) of the kind that Wills Bros has added to its fleet. Fully fuelled with the kind of testosterone they need to do their work, both have the ‘in-your-face, don’t-mess-with-me’ looks of a heavyweight wrestler.

Up close and head-on, the D65PXi-18 and its numerous stable mates have that ‘get-outta-my-way-or-I’ll-shift-you’ appearance that many buyers like. With its rugged posture and sweeping blade, its bold, brash radiator grille, its chunky-lettered nameplate, its hooded exhaust stacks and driver’s cabin far behind, D65PXi-18 dozer is a no-nonsense machine that’s not to be tangled with. Though there are some others who manufacture machines just like them, isn’t it nice to know that, at Komatsu, the catalogue of machinery runs all the way from the very smallest to the very largest, all sharing one common feature: the toughness needed to carry out their tasks.

page 35

McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS

KOMATSU – PROUD TO PERFORM It isn’t for nothing that Komatsu has adopted the slogan: PROUD TO PERFORM. Indeed, in the lexicon of words and clever linguistic compositions, few short phrases could better describe the attitude Komatsu has towards its customers and the satisfaction it derives from knowing that its equipment services their needs and meets their expectations to the extent it does. Truly, Komatsu is ‘proud to perform’. Alongside one or two notable others, Komatsu knows what it is like to be primus inter pares – first amongst equals. This is evident in countless different ways. For example, what owner would not feel pride when seeing a Komatsu excavator or dozer at work, clearing a path in the search for survivors after a tsunami or storm has wrought havoc in some far off country? These are the occasions that demonstrate the powerful reputation Komatsu has as a global brand whose appeal knows no borders. It is evident also in the quality of materials and in the build quality owners buy when choosing Komatsu.

page 36

In a recent issue of Earthmovers magazine, editors used the headline ‘Built To Last’ when reviewing the performance of two 100T-plus Komatsu WA900 wheel loaders that had long passed their use-by date. With 22,000 hours clocked and a throughput of 2,000 tonnes per hour, the writer reported that they are ‘still performing well on their original engines, gearboxes and back ends.’ In a separate report on a giant PC3000 excavator, the same publication quoted its owner saying: ‘it has surpassed our expectations in terms of build quality and reliability.” One additional feature that underscores the PROUD TO PERFORM theme is Komatsu’s embrace of new ‘intelligent’ technology and all things relating to the embodiment of ‘smart ‘ systems in latest-generation machines. Another is the catalogue of safety, machine security and maintenance supports available to every Komatsu owner plus the extent to which every Komatsu machine retains its value, making them a sought-after choice in the used market and a secure investment in terms of resale value.

TECH-SAVVY TECHNICIANS COULD EARN MORE THAN THE TEACHERS WHO TAUGHT THEM

The day is fast approaching when a young person, skilled in computerisation and on-board machine technology, could expect to earn an income greater than the teachers who taught them. As part of what it hopes will be concerted action to bring about the educational and career guidance changes necessary, McHale Plant Sales believes that the question occupying the minds of many in the industry is: Will the bright young computer whizz-kids of today become the construction plant and machinery service specialists of the future? As the use of ‘intelligent technology’ increases and complex, high-tech computer-based systems become an increasingly normal feature in machines such as excavators and dozers, career opportunities for skilled computer-savvy technicians will increase accordingly. Growing in popularity are machines that rely on ‘smart’ electronics and online technology rather than simple mechanical functions, with online systems that control and monitor operations, measure performance and productivity, and provide security and tracking. Common too are drones that carry out site surveys and feed essential worksite data directly into machines working on the ground, automatically and with minimum human intervention. Seeing it as one of the challenges facing manufacturers, distributors and end-users alike, many are of the view that service technicians of the future must be fully computer literate whilst also possessing all of the engineering skills required. To this end, education planners must place proper focus on technical training and apprenticeships amongst second level students.

PYLON OF PROGRESS The extent to which McHale Plant Sales has grown to become a diverse, multi-faceted equipment distributor with a secure presence across a range of sectors, is perfectly illustrated in this ‘welcome’ pylon at the entrance to its Rathcoole headquarters. In addition to its work as distributor of Komatsu construction equipment – now in its 26th year – McHale also has a strong presence in forestry and timber harvesting (Komatsu Forest), stone crushing and aggregates production (Metso), building construction, agricultural contracting and farming (Merlo), and in waste recovery, waste processing and recycling (Terex Ecotec).

McHALE PLANT SALES NEWS

McHALE PLANT SALES IS GOING GREEN McHale Plant Sales is going green. Embracing what sales director, John O’Brien says is ‘a growing move towards alternative energy machines’, the company has joined the climate change battle on three fronts: By distributing machines powered by alternative energy electric and hybrid systems; by its active involvement in the waste retrieval, processing and recycling sector; and by its growing involvement in forestry and support for greater forestation. ‘Driven by a combination of good management planning, environmental awareness and responsibility, and an attachment to the concerns being expressed by climate action advocates, we have witnessed a number of major operators moving to add eco-friendly

machines to their otherwise diverse fleets’ O’Brien says. Amongst these, O’Brien says, has been the demand for Komatsu Hybrid excavators since they were launched some couple of years ago. In addition, the first Komatsu electric powered machine – the PC30, a 3.5-tonnes battery powered mini excavator – is coming. In time, it is expected that Komatsu Forest timber harvesting equipment will introduce these technical advances, O’Brien adds. In addition, our support for increased forestation is also known. Through our work with Terex Ecotec, we are operating at the very heart of the waste recovery and processing sector where climate action is a primary focus.

Similarly, in the case of Merlo, photographs of their first allelectric powered telehandler are in circulation with first machines due to arrive in Ireland, O’Brien adds. Moving forward, hybrid, electric power and alternative fuelled machines will play an increasingly greater role in McHale Plant Sales’ future. ‘Far from being a passing fad, the development of climate-friendly power systems will continue with other fuel sources entering the equation. Similarly, the development of even more fuel efficient diesel and gas powered engines will continue to be a forefront activity and one that we in McHale Plant Sales are fully geared to meet,’ O’Brien adds.

OTHER REASONS WHY KOMATSU IS PROUD TO PERFORM

Pictured (right) is a reminder that all Komatsu approved lubricants can be bought by the drum from McHale Plant Sales – an essential service to owners committed to maintaining their equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.

page 38

McHale Plant Sales parts and product support specialist, Frank Desay reminds readers of two essential services in which Komatsu is also ‘proud to perform’. Reman (see poster left) points to the availability in Ireland of Komatsu Remanufactured components which are rebuilt to Komatsu’s exacting factory specifications. When components reach the point of requiring overhaul or replacement, Komatsu can assist in minimising downtime and reducing costs through a wide range of products. Significantly less expensive than a brand new part, Reman components are rebuilt as new and include: engines, engine components, transmissions, final drives, hydraulic pumps, hydraulic motors, electric wheel motors and more.

‘SMART CONSTRUCTION’ – BECOMING THE SMART CHOICE As its name suggests, ‘smart construction is fast becoming the smart choice, defining a new technology that enables excavators, dozers and others to play a more ‘intelligent’ role in site preparation (see photo). With intelligent machine control, data needed to carry out site preparation work can be captured electronically and ‘preloaded’ with the essential information needed so the machines can do their work automatically.

KOMATSU PC210LCi-11 –

THE INTELLIGENT OPTION

High-precision UAV drone technology (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) are used to survey a site, collect the coordinates, levels, and other vital data required to produce threedimensional drawings. Information gathered in this way can be ‘loaded’ into the machine’s memory alongside any additional inputs likely to have a bearing on site configuration, dimensions, contours and other key outcomes sought. With its ‘brain’ filled with site data, the dozer can then bring the job to a satisfactory completion, guiding itself automatically, Thanks to this latest ‘intelligent technology’ and GPS positioning, the machine itself does all of the heavy lifting while its operator concentrates on safety and the numerous other hazards found on a busy construction site. Through this new technology, reliance on traditional forms of site surveying and staking-out is reduced. Reduced too is the requirement to take constant measurements and record key values as the work proceeds. That way, surveyors and site designers can allocate their time to other important tasks for which their expertise is required. In addition, safety is greatly improved, with fewer people needed on site and near the machine. Developers and contractors alike will notice a number of other benefits - greater machine utilisation, better productivity, elimination of error and the avoidance of expensive corrective work in cases when an error or oversight may have arisen being to the fore. Another factor driving the trend towards smart construction is the increasing shortage of skilled drivers.

Embodying all of the features and benefits of its predecessor, with a few ‘smart’ additions, the Komatsu PC210LCi-11 excavator with intelligent control relieves operators of the worry they might be digging too deeply or damaging a target surface. With its auto tilt bucket, operators can tackle complex surface designs without need to change the position of the machine constantly. Powered by a fuel efficient EU Stage IV Komatsu SAA6D107E‐3 engine with net output of 123 kW / 165 HP @ 2,000 rpm, its operating weights range from 22 – 23 tonnes, depending on the configuration. Delivering ‘automatic real-time control’, its ‘world first’ intelligence prevents digging beyond the target surface. Maintaining grade automatically, its bucket edge positioning in relation to the machine and the job surface is instantly displayed on the full colour, multi‐function 12.1” touch screen monitor, eliminating wait time associated with conventional sensors. Inertial measuring gives precise machine orientation and determines

machine angle from gyro and accelerometer data while high performance antennae send satellite signals to a GNSS receiver so site managers can keep tabs on its positioning. While ‘smart construction’ technology will move into common usage over time, clear leader in the manufacture of this technology is Japanese construction equipment manufacturer, Komatsu. Currently, a number of ‘intelligent’ machines are in operation on Irish worksites. Amongst the pace setters is committed Komatsu owner, Priority Construction. A company quick to grasp new technology, Priority pursues the goal of offering clients latest advances where likely gains are clear. While traditional surveying methods and equipment will continue to have an important role to play within the mix of construction disciplines, ‘intelligent smart construction methods will grow in importance as the technology becomes even more sophisticated’ the company noted.
