Meet the Artists

John Domenico

John Domenico credits his artistic journey to his hardworking, passionate family and the “tactile” upbringing they provided him. Growing up, he was always hands-on with tools, tractors, and gardening, making his journey into a ceramist feel natural. Mostly specializing in large-scale pieces that require structure and physical configurations, Domenico puts his degree in both Material Sciences and Fine Arts in Ceramics to work.

Domenico’s artistic intent is to transform an environment with his pieces and contextualize himself and his work as an amalgamation and extension of what’s come before. Inspired by relationships, critical engagement with the world, and pushing beyond binaries, Domenico aims to capture the nuances of shared humanity. He holds that art shouldn’t have to be defended for its existence; the pervasive academic misconception that “real art” carries only provocative messages limits a celebration of how art can demonstrate vast, genuine human expression. Domenico believes in art as a vessel that encourages people to come together and founded the La Serra Collective, a nonprofit making art accessible to a broader community of artists.

Meet the Artists

Terry Shepherd

Having been a potter for over fifty years, Terry Shepherd has mastered his craft in experimental ceramic firing methods. Driven by his curiosity and his mentorship by Paul Soldner, father of American Raku (and another Plus One artist), Shepherd’s work often utilizes salt vapor, saggar firing, Raku, or reductional firing. His process typically involves placing his pieces in a kiln’s direct flame path, where sodium, iron, and copper metal vapors oxidize to create his signature embellishments.

Shepherd finds inspiration in traditional ceramic practices, from Chinese and Japanese to British and Native American cultures. Natural elements like river rock and plant forms can also be recognized in his work. Exhibiting his precision and years of expertise through functional pieces while testing limits through more experimental sculptures, Shepherd is no stranger to the possibilities of creating with clay.

“I like the work to communicate a personal and visual language of the maker while celebrating the strength and essence of form and the lively spirit of clay and its ability to dress up, titillate our senses, and embellish life as enhanced by the hand.”

Meet the Artists

Stephanie Bachiero

Minimalist, abstract sculptures that look as though they defy gravity are Stephanie Bachiero’s signature style. Her pieces take shape as flexible, pulled planks employing negative space and architectural structure to dance between being a monument of strength and a spectacle of delicacy. Inspired by the Finish Fetish movement of the 70s, Bachiero’s work pays clear homage to the iconic minimalism of her hometown of Southern California.

Bachiero expresses emotions and sensations, metaphors and concepts in sculpture form as a medium to reflect her challenges. After experiencing severe head trauma at a young age, Bachiero’s cognitive and speech function was impaired. Yet, she sees her contemporary material exploration as a way to communicate more comprehensively. “I still have this isolation in my mind, but I can have conversations with the porcelain as it moves,” she describes.

Her porcelain and bronze sculptures have ranged from small pieces intended for table tops to be 6 feet tall, some of which she has taken inspiration from evolving technology to produce in experimental methods like with industrial military fabricators.

Meet the Artists

Alan Chin

Alan Chin was born in Berkeley, surrounded by a deeply artistic family and community. From an early age, Chin studied a multitude of art forms, challenging himself in painting, sculpture, film, performance, and architecture throughout his endeavors. In 2004, he was the youngest-ever recipient of the “Heart in San Francisco” art commission at the age of 16.

Chin sees his art as a way to “organize the universe through a fragile, personal system of order within the seemingly chaotic world by focusing on the intersection of what we share when we live together.” To reflect the meaning and humanity in our daily lives, many of his works use everyday materials, found objects, and nature. These “pieces of the world” are re-envisioned as raw materials to create patterns with and a way to directly freeze a specific time and place in his work.

Chin also takes great inspiration from Asian-American history and culture, especially from specific stories from his grandparents. In exploring their hardships and his loss, Chin captures the essence of life, death, and what it means to be alive through his many art forms.

Meet the Artists

Vince Palacios

Vince Palacios discovered his purpose in becoming an artist after taking a weeks-long ceramic course with his wife in 1988. Since then, he has been featured in numerous exhibitions across the globe and imparts his knowledge as a Professor of Ceramics, currently at El Camino College. Using a foundation of classical elements and his decades of precise skill only to break free from them, Palacios routinely incorporates “awkward” figures, bright colors, overlapping glazes, and multiple firings to explore his view of the world -- or even how the world views him – through his pieces. He specializes in the geological processes of pyroclastic interactions, experimenting with raw glass, and ceramic materials, and their reactions to heat and chemicals.

Palacios finds his inspiration in the moment, comparing his process to that of a performer or comedian. “There are set ideas, techniques, and expectations; but each time, something new emerges in response to external stimulus or circumstance. I love improvisational work!” While he aims to capture the passion, exuberance, and poetic notion of greater themes in his work, he finds that he doesn’t create for a particular audience, but rather for himself, searching for a voice or soul that responds to the work he is creating.

Meet the Artists

Jeffry Mitchell

According to Jeffry Mitchell, clay is universally familiar; something humans can innately connect with, like children who make mud pies or pinch pots at play. The Seattle-based artist adopts an unbridled, exuberant approach toward his pieces, characterized by unrefined shapes and textures covered in dripping layers of glaze. Hand-built elements give his work a comforting, “communal” touch in addition to the floral and animal motifs he routinely employs to symbolize youth, liberty, and richness.

Mitchell does not discount the strength of using art as a medium for sociopolitical commentary and observation. His interpretations of the shared human experience through this “relatable” material often lean into themes of spirituality, gender, class, and sexuality. Using classical, folk, and decorative arts traditions from a diverse range of cultures, Mitchell reinterprets them to fit a contemporary lens. He’s been known to take inspiration from particular art movements like Russian Constructivism, even more specific cultural pieces like Pennsylvania Dutch pickle jars, to Japanese seihakuji porcelain, which he became familiar with while living in Japan as an apprentice and an English teacher.

Pattern-making in pottery transcends mere aesthetics, serving as a universal language rich in cultural significance. From the geometric markings of Greco-Roman amphoras to the delicate arabesques of Chinese pottery, patterns are vehicles for communication and storytelling. Geometric elements pay homage to structured civilizations, while elaborate vessels denote social hierarchy and prestige. Across civilizations, pottery patterns convey myths, spirituality, tribal affiliations, and more, encapsulating the essence of diverse cultures. Each stroke on clay becomes a window into history, beliefs, and societal structures, showcasing the craftsmanship and sophistication of civilizations through the ages.

Take inspiration from these shapes and symbols of civilizations past and create a new and unique pattern that encompasses your story, culture, and beliefs!

Introducing Charles Lynn Bragg's Latest Masterpiece: A Tribute to Ocean

In the suburb of Manhattan Beach, a new mural graces the 34th Avenue stairs, capturing the essence of the sea in vibrant hues and dynamic strokes. Commissioned by the City of Manhattan Beach, this awe-inspiring creation comes to life under the skilled hand of multimedia artist Charles Lynn Bragg.

Bragg's passion for art intertwines seamlessly with his deep connection to the South Bay. Known for his captivating works that speak to the precarious health of our planet, Bragg's latest project pays homage to the very shores he has called home for decades.

Drawing inspiration from a moment frozen in time, Bragg recalls photographing a seal on this exact beach several years ago—a memory that has fueled his artistic vision ever since. "This is where I've been surfing for the last twenty years," Bragg shares, underscoring the personal significance of his latest endeavor.

Yet, this mural is more than just a visual spectacle it's a testament to resilience and determination. Despite facing physical challenges, Bragg's creativity knows no bounds. "Getting the lines and contours to come together is very tricky," he explains, reflecting on the painstaking process. "When you walk up the stairs, each step riser becomes abstract and unrecognizable as a sea lion."

Indeed, Bragg's perseverance shines through every brushstroke, transforming ordinary stairs into a canvas of boundless imagination. As visitors ascend the steps, they're invited into a world where art and nature converge, where the spirit of the ocean dances before their eyes.
