GLAZE(S) OF THE WEEK
“Opportunities are presented to us each and every day, but do we see them? To see an opportunity, we must be open to all thoughts.” – Catherine Pulsifer
You didn’t think that just because the studio was closed, we wouldn’t have any Glazes of the Week, did you? We would never miss an opportunity to show off the amazing work that we saw in our end-ofyear firings! In fact, we ’ ve decided to showcase TWICE the amount of GotW stars in this issue!
Let’s start off with our oxidation picks, shall we? The first piece on the left is a mug by an unknown artist, glazed in Waxy Acero and Rutile, which created this beautiful multi-colored drip effect. Next is another Waxy Acero piece with Matte Turquoise accents over it by another unknown artist. The turquoise really gives the bowl some great dimension!
Next up are these super cool sgraffito bowls by Otis G. The blue and green underglaze against the black slip really brings his creatures to life!
GLAZE(S) OF THE WEEK
To the bottom left is a neat pitcher by A.F., glazed in Winokur Yellow, Green Colemanite, and a celadon (we think). Our eyes went straight to the perfectly burnt orange strip, which comes from a thin and even application of the Winokur Yellow.
Then to the right is this gorgeously speckled bowl by T.J. It’s actually just a thick (but not too thick!) layer of Fish Guts on Sable Black clay. We don’t often see Fish Guts in oxidation, but this bowl has us hoping to see more of it soon!
GLAZE(S) OF THE WEEK
To wrap up our oxidation picks are these adorable little pieces. First, we ’ re joined by a perfect duck swimming in a pool of light blue underglaze, painted by artist C.S. Finally, we had to feature this mini LA Dodger’s hat glazed in Cobalt blue by Kyung S. to celebrate our World Series Champs!
Now let’s shift onto our reduction pieces! First, we have a pot glazed in Shino and dotted with orange underglaze spots by artist Atlas. The red hues from the Shino and Fat Red clay compliment the spotted details! On the right is a bowl gl
GLAZE(S) OF THE WEEK
Next up, we have a pouring vessel with a beautiful drip pattern made of Rutile and Fish Guts over H.V. Ranch by an unknown artist. A meticulous design and some luck in the kiln helped those drips come out so symmetrically! Our next pick is a set of cups featuring a geometric design made by layering Angel Eyes and Green Colemanite by artist M.T. The gradients in both of the glazes give the pattern an extra elevated look!
GLAZE(S) OF THE WEEK
Woah! We have a unique tentacle or, uh, technical piece by artist ooden” crate, and the rusty es poking through on those Then to the right, we found w red-brown clay came out ft by artist K. The spots of ver Mark’s Temmoku create t can’t seem to pry our eyes away from. Last but certainly not least is a set of bowls from C.T. The sweeps of Rutile and Patsy’s Green over St. John’s Black give it a mystic, seashell-like iridescent effect!
We hope you enjoyed our double feature of Glaze of the Week! Thank you to all of our potters for creating endlessly unique and beautiful work. We’re excited to see what you all create in the New Year!
