HABITAT FOR HUMANITY’S BREW HAHA SERVES FUN, RAISES FUNDS

Heartwood Preserve was the place to be for 2,800 guests on Sept. 5, when Habitat for Humanity held its 19th Annual Brew Haha. The event gave attendees a chance to sample food from 32 different food vendors — from an Indian food truck to beloved pizzerias, cupcake artists and more — as well as 51 drink vendors. Those with VIP tickets could sip exclusive cocktails from Maven Social and Laka Lono, nibble special bites of food and enjoy reserved seating.

Brew Haha is a fundraiser for the nonprofit, and every dollar raised helps build strength, stability and self-reliance for families by assisting with affordable housing in the five-county area served by Habitat for Humanity. The total amount raised at the 2025 event was $387,000.

The honorary chairs of the 2025 event were Collette and Andy Lozier. Andy is CEO of Lozier Corporation and the fourth generation to lead the Omaha-based manufacturer. Collette has worked closely with Habitat Omaha on neighborhood revitalization efforts in North Omaha.

nears construction

Developer Jasper Stone has announced plans to build the Avenue One Good Life District’s first two retail buildings northeast of 192nd and Burke streets. The proposed buildings will be 13,500 and 2,834 square feet, according to City of Omaha planning department documents. Occupants have yet to be announced.

Avenue One is one of five Good Life districts that also include districts in Gretna, Bellevue, Grand Island and Kearney. These areas, for which the state allows a portion of state sales tax revenue to be reinvested into its projects, are for large-scale retail and entertainment developments intended to attract visitors and provide jobs.

Omaha has new tallest building

Mutual of Omaha’s future headquarters building, still under construction, has exceeded 650 feet and is now the state’s tallest skyscraper. Family Business Dynasties

LOCALLY OWNED AND FAMILY-RUN, THESE OMAHA FIRMS SUCCEED

The goal is to take care of the goose. Don’t take any more than you need, leave as much working capital as you can, be fair to one another and take care of the goose.
- JEFF KAVICH, PRESIDENT/CEO, ALL MAKES

In business, there’s a third-generation curse that often strikes family fortunes and family-run companies. The first generation worked hard to get a company up and running and the second generation witnessed all the effort and so they continue with building the company. Members of the third generation, however, who

didn’t have to toil to build up the company, often don’t appear to respect the effort put forth by those before them.

The bottom line is that it’s not easy for a family business to endure, which is what makes the multi-generational companies of the midlands all the more impressive. Since 1918, All Makes has grown into an office equipment company with customers in every state, Canada and overseas. At the helm in present day is Amee Zetzman and Jeff Kavich, siblings who represent the fourth generation to run the family company.

For over 100 years, All Makes has been shaping workplaces across the Midwest. As a 4th-generation family-owned business, we’ve combined legacy and innovation to deliver spaces where businesses and people thrive. From design to installation, we create environments that inspire productivity, collaboration, and growth. Our team partners with organizations of all sizes to transform their vision into reality, whether it’s a single office or an entire corporate campus. With expert design services, top-tier furniture solutions, and a century of experience behind us, we are here to help you create a workplace that works for you. Zetzman and Kavich respect the company and each other. Kavich said that his father and grandfather used to refer to the family business as “the golden goose,” explaining that the company has laid golden eggs for a long time.

“The goal is to take care of the goose,” said Kavich. “Don’t take any more than you need, leave as much working capital as you can, be fair to one another and take care of the goose.”

Talent over title

Those ideas have helped All Makes sustain as a family-owned business in which there isn’t family drama. Kavich remembered an achievement that came after he’d paid his dues working on install teams and learning all aspects of the company.

“When I moved inside from the install team, the treasurer at the time gave me my first title as secretary of the company and said, ‘That and $2 will get you a cup of

coffee,’” Kavich said. “Titles don’t mean anything in the family business. We all push when we need to push, and pull when we need to pull. We run it pretty casually from a title perspective.”

The duo asserted they run the company as though they’re co-presidents, which they said is pivotal to their success and longevity. Zetzman added that they spend a great deal of time together in the office, as they’re both dedicated to the success of All Makes. They attended family business seminars at Creighton in anticipation of running the business as siblings.

One thing they learned at one of the seminars is that multigenerational businesses often fail because the current generation feels they worked hard and want their nest egg from the company. Their grandfather and father didn’t go that route, so by the time Zetzman and Kavich were “handed the keys,” the company was in good shape with working capital. They didn’t have to build it up; they just had to keep taking care of the “golden goose.”

- DAN THRASHER, CEO, THRASHER

Bucking the curse

Doug Buchanan of RENZE, a leading provider of exhibits, displays and graphics for trade shows, branded environments and events, is part of the company’s third generation of leadership. The Buchanan family bought the company from Gus Renze in 1935, the company has seen four generations of the Buchanan family at the helm.

“I believe navigating the complicated dynamics of working with family and transferring ownership can be helped dramatically by seeking an outside consultant or mentor,” Doug Buchanan said.

It was his father who encouraged him to seek outside mentorship. Buchanan, in turn, gave the same advice to his son, Scott, who recently took on the role of president.

Speaking about his outside consultant, Doug Buchanan said getting a perspective outside of the confines of the family unit proved invaluable.

“With family businesses, it’s hard to separate professional and personal relationships,” he said, “but finding an independent mentor who is free of family ties is priceless for gaining confidence and for helping the next generation build a great team.”

Foundation repair company Thrasher started in an Iowa farmhouse in 1975. Current CEO Dan Thrasher is a vocal proponent of the Thrasher mission of redefining the industry, and he said this common mission is one of the reasons why this family-owned company has thrived for 50 years.

With an employee roster approaching 600, four of whom are Thrasher family members, he said that the shared mission is what brings everyone in the company together and helps it succeed. Thrasher is looking toward the third generation as a succession plan while trying not to pressure family members into running the company if that’s not what they want.

“We’re trying really hard to prepare our kids for that possibility eventually, but also really trying to give them the freedom to choose what makes sense for them,” he said, adding that it can be tricky because as a parent he’d love for the third generation to join the company, yet he doesn’t want for his kids to feel obligated to do so.

The drive to keep the company in family hands has resulted in ownership turning down every offer made by outside investors who want to buy them out. He said as the bids to buy increased in the last decade, the family came together to talk about any possibility of selling and together, they ultimately decided the best thing for the family, employees, and community was to not sell.

Remaining a family-owned business allows Thrasher to “continue to make the decisions that we think are best for the long-term,” he said. It all goes back to wanting to redefine the industry as one team, one passion, one experience, and one community.

The shared values of the Thrasher family and team mirror the shared values of other successful legacy businesses in Omaha in the sense that they’re all in it together, working toward a common goal for the betterment of the company and the community at large.

BUSINESS OF THE arts

HOW PERFORMING ARTS DRIVE CULTURE AND ECONOMY

You can be in this city and see the shows from Broadway that are first-year on the road. We’ve got the best possible performances right here in our own backyard.
- JOAN SQUIRES, PRESIDENT, OMAHA PERFORMING ARTS

When the lights dim at the Orpheum Theater in a couple of days, the buzz in Omaha will reach a crescendo. “The Outsiders,” the Tony Award-winning Broadway show, arrives on Sept. 28 as the second stop on its inaugural national tour, fresh from six days in Buffalo, New York. Audiences won’t just witness a performance — they will feel the pulse of a city where performing arts and business intersect in ways that shape Omaha’s cultural and economic landscape.

“You can be in this city and see the shows from Broadway that are first-year on the road,” said Joan Squires, president of Omaha Performing Arts (O-pa). “We’ve got the best possible performances right here in our own backyard, which is extraordinary.”

Across the metropolitan area, Omaha’s arts organizations operate on scales as varied as the performances themselves, but all share a common goal: turning artistry into community impact and economic growth. From the large-scale operations of Omaha Performing Arts and the Omaha Symphony to the intimate, mission-driven productions of Bluebarn Theatre and Opera Omaha, these organizations form a sophisticated ecosystem where collaboration, innovation and financial acumen define success.

Economic scale

The numbers speak volumes. O-pa alone generates an annual economic impact of tens of millions, through both their performances and the surrounding restaurants, bars, hotels and more that benefit. The group also employs “approximately 100 full-time and about 200 parttime employees, plus a board of directors of 11 and a volunteer corps of 550,” Squires said.

Meanwhile, the Omaha Symphony, under Jennifer Boomgaarden Daoud, president and CEO, reaches 225,000 people annually through more than 150 performances. Symphony musicians also teach in universities, conservatories and schools, spreading artistic influence while

stabilizing revenue streams.

“About 40% of our audience comes from outside Douglas County,” Boomgaarden Daoud said. “This positions the symphony as a critical piece of infrastructure in the arts community.”

Opera Omaha, led by Allison Swenson, general director, occupies the artisanal end of the spectrum.

“Our biggest cost is labor,” Swenson said. “(We use) a cast of hundreds every single time — including the Omaha Symphony, Opera Omaha chorus, principal artists and crew.”

Swenson’s team balances artistic ambition with strategic budgeting, reducing the number of fully staged productions while adding touring and family programming, effectively doubling performances without dramatically increasing expenses.

Smaller venues, such as Bluebarn Theatre, reflect a philosophy of careful stewardship, summarized by Producing Artistic Director Susan Clement as, “We don’t do what we don’t have money for. We run with no debt.”

Meanwhile, Omaha Community Playhouse, under executive director Becky Noble, produces 10 shows a year, combining robust infrastructure with community engagement in a hybrid model.

Data analytics meets artistic integrity

Financial strategies differ dramatically across Omaha’s arts landscape. Data-driven decision-making is central to many organizations, such as the symphony, which credits TV broadcasts such as those on PBS and on-demand programming for measurable increases in

single-ticket sales.

For Opera Omaha, ticket revenue covers only a fraction of production costs. The organization frames success in terms of service delivery rather than profit, ensuring accessibility while maintaining artistic standards.

“The ratio of contributions to ticket sales is heavily overweighted with contributions, and that is also normal,” Swenson said.

Bluebarn also prioritizes artistic integrity above financial forecasts.

“We will never choose our work because we think it’s gonna be a hit and make us money. To me, that is death in the theater,” Clement said.

Bill Stephan, executive director and chief artistic officer of the Lied Performing Arts Center in Lincoln, emphasized a similar model of investment in community and educational value.

“Ticket sales just cover less than half of the cost of bringing these amazing artists to Nebraska,” Stephan said. “It’s the generosity of the people, the Friends of Lied and private donors that allows us to underwrite national touring shows, residencies and educational programs.”

Programming choices reveal how each organization balances audience demand with mission. The symphony has embraced a wide repertoire, including film

accompaniments and popular acts alongside classical staples. Opera Omaha mixes familiar titles, like “The Barber of Seville,” with lesser-known works to attract both seasoned patrons and first-time attendees. Bluebarn selects productions guided strictly by artistic vision rather than anticipated financial return.

“Sometimes people just want to laugh, to have a good time. That influences our decisions,” Noble said. She also said musicals always bring a crowd, citing shows like “Jersey Boys” and “Escape to Margaritaville.” Danna Kehm, president of Pottawattamie Arts, Culture and Entertainment, highlighted the interplay of artistic impact and economic influence, noting that philanthropy sustains these organizations and fuels community vitality.

Collaboration and infrastructure

The collaborative spirit of Omaha’s arts scene is a recurring theme in the area’s arts organizations.

“It’s a ‘rising tides’ kind of scenario here,” said Boomgaarden Daoud. “Everybody works together, everyone is invested in each other’s success.”

“This is easily the most collaborative organization I’ve ever worked in,” agreed Swenson.

Musicians and artists often cross organizational lines. Symphony members perform in opera productions, university residencies and community programs. Stephan described a similar model at Lied, where national touring productions collaborate with university departments to integrate history, architecture and engineering into performances.

“We had Parabola Dance with students performing alongside drones,” Stephan said. “These integrations provide students opportunities to engage with the arts in ways that go beyond traditional classroom learning.”

Attracting new audiences is a challenge and an art form. Swenson likened the marketing strategy of her organization to the popular “Got Milk?” ad campaigns of the 1990s, including the use of a simple slogan and star power to raise opera awareness. Boomgaarden Daoud said the symphony uses generational programming to appeal to diverse demographics. Noble has observed shifting ticketing behaviors, noting that younger patrons increasingly prefer singleshow purchases over season subscriptions, prompting increased digital outreach.

At Lied, which also caters to the college crowd at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Stephan emphasized accessibility. Tickets are often priced under $45 to ensure broad participation. This means leveraging donor support to maintain financial sustainability.

The arts don’t exist for their own sake, but also drive significant economic activity. When larger venues and organizations draw audiences from beyond the state, it contributes to tourism dollars. The symphony sees cultural infrastructure as vital to workforce development:

“Vibrant cities attract a vibrant workforce. Arts and culture create a quality of place,” Boomgaarden Daoud said.

The effect is virtually the same no matter where the arts travel. Stephan pointed to Lied’s Arts Across Nebraska program, which brings performances to smaller communities from McCook to Nebraska City, delivering cultural experiences while generating local economic benefits.

Audiences not only appreciate professional art performance, they have come to demand them at a very high level of artistic excellence. Swenson compared audience sophistication to athletic talent.

“Within five minutes, I know who the best player on the team is,” she said. “You can’t underestimate your audience.”

Rising costs drive adaptive strategies. Opera Omaha’s innovations include touring shows and family operas to expand access without inflating budgets. Bluebarn avoids “mission bleed,” sticking firmly to its artistic mandate. Kehm emphasized that philanthropy and business support allow experimentation and risk-taking that strengthen Omaha’s arts ecosystem overall.

Looking forward

With fall productions opening around the area this month, the arts scene continues to generate energy and economic activity, reinforcing the reputation of Omaha, and the surrounding area, as a regional cultural hub. As the area has grown in numbers, so have the arts communities. This region presents top-level performing arts events. Area residents can see the best performances right here in the Midlands.

From national Broadway tours to locally produced theater, symphony concerts to opera and educational initiatives, arts organizations demonstrate that cultural vibrancy and economic impact are inseparable. Their collaborative strategies, diverse revenue models and commitment to artistic excellence ensure that the city’s creative economy thrives while enriching the lives of residents and visitors alike.

In Omaha, the performing arts aren’t just entertainment — they’re a driver of innovation, community connection and economic growth.

GROWTH report

Groundwork for Growth

SOUTHWESTERN IOWA FOCUSED ON ADVANCEMENTS TO FACILITATE PROGRESS

Affordable child care, quality of life and mental health services are essential to economic development. That’s the long game.

Every yin has a yang, and the Missouri River winds right through one of the best examples. Omaha anchors eastern Nebraska, while Council Bluffs mirrors it on the western Iowa side. They have their differences, but they complement each other more than they compete. As Omaha grows its urban edge, the more rural southwest Iowa is an obvious opportunity for growth.

The Omaha Metro area has now surpassed 1 million in population, but Omaha alone boasts a population of nearly 500,000 while its counterpart across the river is home to almost 63,000 as of 2024. These numbers, coupled with the many smaller cities in the metro area, make this one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country.

Donna Dostal, executive director of the Community Foundation for Western Iowa, points at those numbers as a clear indicator that future growth is to the west.

“Western Iowa is the new frontier for investing,” Dostal said. “We have land, potential, natural resources and amenities that are second to none. Communities in western Iowa are perfectly positioned for that growth.”

Chris LaFerla, Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, added that regional collaboration benefits everyone, but allowing each community to leverage its unique assets is important for building momentum.

times and a high quality of life, all while being just minutes from the cultural, educational and professional amenities of downtown Omaha,” LaFerla said. “Together, these advantages make the region stronger and more attractive to both businesses and talent.”

Gitzy Loder, executive director of the Mills County Chamber of Commerce, said the relationship between neighboring communities will always be a work in progress but it is important to remember that the other side of the river is a benefit to the area.

“With our proximity to the Omaha metro region, we also want to be intentional about building relationships with our neighbors across the river in Nebraska,” Loder said. As the metro area continues to grow, southwest Iowa is laying the necessary foundations for anticipated growth in the coming years while celebrating small successes along the way.

Essential investments

When discussing growth in southwest Iowa, the investment of the Charles E. Lakin Foundation should be noted. With housing, child care and educational causes at the forefront of its most recent $165 million in local investment, Dostal said these areas are

“Koley

Jessen is an essential part of our team, helping ensure the NCAA Division I Men’s College World Series remains an iconic Omaha tradition.”

“Their trusted counsel allows us to focus on the experience, confident that every detail – from complex legal matters to strategic planning – is handled with care. Koley Jessen’s proactive approach, deep understanding of our needs, and unwavering commitment to the community, including their generous pro-bono contributions to College World Series of Omaha, Inc., help us deliver unforgettable experiences and leave a lasting legacy for Omaha.”

“Unless you invest in those necessary pieces to be able to attract and retain a strong workforce, you’re always going to have the issue of not having enough (employees),” Dostal said.

“These aren’t just social issues — they’re economic issues. Unless we support them, we can’t attract and retain the workforce we need. Affordable child care, quality of life and mental health services are essential to economic development. That’s the long game.”

The Lakin Foundation created its Revitalize Southwest Iowa initiative to focus primarily on housing through “impact investing,” Dostal said, with the idea being that of a “build it and they will come” mentality. She points to Atlantic’s current project as an early sign of success.

“Atlantic’s project is huge, with over 140 houses,” Dostal said. “They’re taking a phased approach: building about 30 houses, selling them, putting proceeds back into the fund and borrowing again.”

Jennifer McEntaffer, executive director of the Cass/Atlantic Development Corp., said the organization is currently working with the Lakin Foundation on a three-prong project.

“The goal of this project is to construct a new child care facility, renovate the existing YMCA and complete a housing development,” McEntaffer said. “Fundraising is still underway.”

Matt Sells, president of the Shenandoah Chamber and Industry Association, said the main thing companies want to know is, “What kind of workforce can you support?”

“We admire (Atlantic’s) projects,” Sells said. “These are things that bring population to southwest Iowa and run parallel to attracting industry.”

Mark Norman, executive director of Mills County Economic Development, pointed out that the redevelopment of the 245-acre Glenwood Resource Center campus, following the closure of the state hospital, should offer up to 900 new housing units, as well as the potential for commercial businesses.

He said the site is expected to be “development ready” by early 2027.

Necessary amenities

LaFerla said amenities —such as arts and cultural venues, and walkable neighborhoods — will play a major role in how Council Bluffs and the surrounding areas attract and retain talent in the years to come. Millennials and Gen Z now make up the largest share of the workforce and are seeking vibrant, yet affordable, communities.

-

Groundwork for Growth

With our proximity to the Omaha metro region, we also want to be intentional about building relationships with our neighbors across the river in Nebraska.

Dostal said that the area is fortunate to have easy access to several great venues on the Nebraska side of the river in addition to the Iowa side, but noted the biggest development has been the riverfront revitalization initiative spearheaded by the Southwest Iowa Nonprofit for Collective Impact.

The SINC initiative has been entirely funded by local donors and community

collaborations to produce new amenities such as Belles’ Play Garden along the Iowa side of the river. The project is entering Phase 4, which includes plans for the completion of the treetop walk, adventure tower and pier, among others.

“It’s a significant philanthropic investment ensuring our cultural amenities mirror Nebraska’s side of the river,” Dostal said.

A focus on amenities extends to other communities as well. McEntaffer said a 4,500-square-foot splash pad opened this year in Atlantic, and, coupled with plans to renovate the YMCA, provides value for families.

Other areas see these amenities as an opportunity to boost the local economy. Loder said the Mills County Chamber of Commerce has focused heavily on tourism recently in addition to attracting residents and businesses.

“With the proximity to larger cities, we believe that Mills County is the best of both worlds. Families, individuals and businesses can find the peace and charm of the region,” Loder said.

Sells said Shenandoah is looking to set the stage for growth with public infrastructure improvements, such as expanding water, electrical and wastewater capacity — all of which will be needed for smaller communities to expand.

“We have to work harder to be our own destination,” Sells said. “We can’t rely on being a suburb; we need to create reasons for people to live and work here.”

Business development

Tech powerhouse Google has a longstanding presence in the area, but recently made even more investments with the expansion of its Council Bluffs data centers.

“Google’s $1 billion investment in 2024 has a significant economic impact in Council Bluffs,” LaFerla said. “The project will add to the tax base, as well as create high-skill tech jobs and contracts for construction and local services.”

LaFerla added that a data center comes with an entire ecosystem, which drives fiber and broadband upgrades and attracts suppliers along with Google’s investments in various initiatives.

Additionally, Norman sees growth potential in three areas: near the I-29/ Bunge Avenue interchange (recently annexed by the City of Council Bluffs), the 1,600-acre Mills Crossing site and the Highway 34/I-29 corridor. Norman noted that the three developments have drawn interest from several entities.

Spec buildings are another opportunity to attract new businesses. Atlantic Community Development LLC recently completed a 12,500-square-foot building just west of Atlantic. McEntaffer is excited about this opportunity as a previous spec building is now occupied by a crane company that added 40 jobs to the area.

Small businesses, such as nail salons, are also thriving throughout the region, said Jeannie Wortman, executive director of the Missouri Valley Chamber of Commerce. She also noted that the U.S. 30 Missouri Valley Bypass, which recently began dirt work, could be beneficial to the region once completed.

Dostal feels the future growth of southwest Iowa boils down to ensuring that the communities there have the elements newcomers need to build a life.

“The more they look outside their community for solutions, the more likely they are to leave,” Dostal said. “That’s why we have to invest in communities.”

Here to Serve Our Community

Being a family-owned, community bank means investing in the communities we serve.

It means personal service and working with people who are our neighbors. It means building strong relationships with our customers in order to surpass their expectations. It means offering the services of a big bank to meet the needs of our customers.

The Kidglov Way

To understand the philosophy of advertising maven Lyn Wineman, one need only look to the name of her firm, Kidglov.

“We treat people and brands with great care,” said Wineman, owner and chief strategist. “We treat them with kid gloves.”

Laptop, kitchen table

At 23, her boss asked what she wanted to do in advertising. Owning a company was a goal, she said. In 2010, with her career in transition, Wineman wondered what she should do next. Her husband encouraged her to create her own advertising company.

“I had the support of my family, and I had a good reputation and network in the community, and I think I had just enough tenacity to really dig in and make it work,” Wineman said. “So in 2010, me, my laptop, my dining room table and my very best friends in the business who were willing to jump in with me were off to the races.”

WIneman said her goal in creating Kidglov was to provide a different kind of agency experience, one that stressed personal attention and general pampering of clients.

“I really wanted it to be a very special place,” she said.

The attitude also extended to the firm’s staff. Working more than 50 hours a week is the norm for advertising executives, Wineman said. At Kidglov, they average 45 hours or less.

“That’s really important to us, because we feel like when they’re here in the office creativity is such an emotional and energetic field,” Wineman said. “We know that if we can take care of our team members, they will feel that.”

She’s never flinched at her commitment to running Kidglov, turning a job offer from the CEO of a large nonprofit into a marketing opportunity, Wineman said.

“I said I would be the interim marketing director for one year if they would also hire us as their agency,” she said, noting that within a year,

Kidglov completed a rebrand for the nonprofit, including reworking its media plan and reorganizing its department.

Social impact

With a commitment to clients, Kidglov seeks to share their stories and help them grow, she said. The advertising firm believes in supporting organizations — nonprofits and otherwise — that are committed to having a social impact, Wineman said.

“Our mission is stated as putting a megaphone in front of those who are doing good in the world,” she said. “We’ve developed that expertise for being able to handle that work. We typically don’t go and tackle social justice issues on our own behalf, just because we feel like we make a bigger impact by going through others and supporting others who are more prepared to do that work.”

Wineman is proud of Kidglov’s recognition as a certified B Corporation, an honor that follows a rigorous process verifying that the agency has achieved the highest standards in demonstrating it takes care of the community, employees, clients and the planet. It also denotes the firm is transparent in its business practices.

“We have given roughly $200,000 a year in free services to organizations in the community,” Wineman said. “Then, above and beyond that, we have very high standards for how we take care of our employees. We feel like one way we give back is by sending our team members home happy and mentally healthy at the end of the day.”

Asked what she would offer a young entrepreneur, Wineman would encourage them to learn to “dance.”

“If you think you’re going to control everything and it’s going to work out exactly the way you think it is, you are greatly mistaken,” Wineman said. “You gotta be prepared to change as the music changes and learn how to find some joy in that process versus letting it disrupt you.”

No Name Nutrition Market

No Name Nutrition Market

As No Name Nutrition Market approaches its 50th anniversary next year, co-owner Trent Hurley can’t help but think back to the humble beginning of this Omaha staple. As a child, he dealt with painful canker sores and cold sores and suffered through a regimen suggested by his physician of aspirin and popsicles. Then, his mother, Nancy Hurley, stopped in at a nutrition shop and asked for advice.

According to Trent, the owner at that time suggested probiotics and a change to Trent’s diet. As a result, the painful canker sores and cold sores cleared up within two weeks.

“My mom was so impressed that she quit her job as a secretary and started working there,” Trent said. In less than a year, Nancy and her husband, Lynn, bought that store, No Name Organic Vitamins & Supplements, and rebranded it as No Name Nutrition.

From running around to running the business

Trent and his brother, Todd, spent a great deal of time at the store growing up. As a child, Trent pushed back against the natural foods his parents served and didn’t picture himself ever running the business. But maturity, along with many days spent working in the store as a child and college student, made Trent eventually fall in love with the business.

Long-time customers sometimes joke with Trent about remembering seeing him and Todd running around the store as “little squirts.”

“I grew to love the business,” Trent said. “It’s pretty inspiring

when people come back and say that we changed their lives by guiding them down a path of good health.”

Though No Name Nutrition is now a respected mainstay within the Omaha area, Trent vividly recalled the difficulties they faced when they opened their second location on West Center Road in the late 1980s.

“I remember $25 and $50 days,” he said. “People came in and walked around to buy a candy bar and a natural pop, and we were sitting there thinking, ‘What are we doing? Why are we here?’”

Despite the rough beginning, the opening of the nearby Oakview Mall in the early 1990s changed the game for No Name Nutrition’s second location. As interest in nutritional supplements and healthy living grew, especially in the late 1990s with the rise of the internet, businesses like No Name Nutrition became increasingly sought-after by health-conscious consumers.

A varied clientele

Word-of-mouth spread rapidly about No Name Nutrition’s knowledgeable staff and the personalized attention they provided to clients and today’s team is no less passionate about wellness and healthy living. Taking care not to diagnose or offer medical advice that should come from a medical professional, they lean on their long years of experience to provide helpful, personalized guidance.

While some clients are simply curious about healthier living, others are seeking relief for ailments that persist despite

“You don’t want to go to the doctor every time you sneeze,” he said. “You want to be able to build your body up through nutrition and diets and everything else.”

Trent attributes No Name Nutrition’s success to being a faithbased family business. He derives a great deal of strength and guidance from his faith and from the legacy of what his parents built. His advice to hopeful business owners reflects this.

Parking Area Maintenance

Building inclusive spaces

While Parking Area Maintenance’s business is paving roads and parking lots, the company, at its core, is really about building safer, more functional and more inclusive spaces for people to live, work and grow, Mbachu said.

Victoria Mbachu spent most of her military career in construction. Assignments included working with other nations to build road systems.

“Roads are the arteries and veins to a community, and once that is severed, you don’t have access to anything,” Mbachu said. “You need good infrastructure. If a road is closed down, you have to find a new way to get to work.”

That philosophy has served her well since taking over in 2024 as owner of Parking Area Maintenance. The 40-year-old asphalt maintenance company, which also handles concrete surfaces, specializes in asphalt paving, crack seal, seal coat and striping.

‘Make a difference’

Following her retirement from the United States Army, the Texas native who spent much of her 20-year career at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, wanted to own a construction business.

She didn’t want to just own a company, however, she wanted to make a difference in society, Mbachu said. When she saw Parking Area Maintenance was for sale, she jumped at the opportunity to buy it.

“I really wanted to transform it into a vehicle for community impact and economic empowerment,” she said. “Being a veteranowned business, we stand like a reflection of resilience, opportunity and leadership with purpose.”

Taking over an established company was a challenge because it involved building trust with clients while also restructuring operations to meet modern expectations, Mbachu said.

“I felt like I was stepping into a space where the employees didn’t know me and the clients were unsure what to expect,” she said.

Parking Area Maintenance allowed her to use aspects of her military training — discipline, precision and strategic thinking — in a civilian environment. She also used that background to unite employees, Mbachu said.

“I thought there was a big divide, where it was the people in the office versus the crews and the foreman,” she said. “Omaha is really a small town, where everyone knows each other, and I’m this outsider, so it really took a while for the guys to trust me.

“I think it took creating a culture where we are a team and everyone needs each other, but also just taking care of everybody. I think I was able to do that fairly quickly.”

“I’d say what sets us apart is our people,” she said. “We hire from the community. I’m very big on offering second chances to individuals, especially veterans and justice-involved citizens. We’re looking to rebuild their lives and invest in an employee’s growth with the same commitment I once gave to my soldiers when I was in command.”

About 25 percent of employees have been incarcerated at some point in their lives, she said. Creating a positive culture and team concept is among her proudest moments as a business owner.

“When I first started, I thought I had to hustle hard to succeed, but what I really needed was to lead smarter,” Mbachu said. “In the military, it’s all about systems, protocols, and being able to apply those same principles in my business. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers, it’s really about creating that culture where people are empowered to step up, take ownership and grow.”

She said of all the things that have gone into her success, learning to trust herself and not wait for anyone to hand her a seat at the table ranks right near the top.

“Build your own table and invite others to join you,” she said. “Stay anchored in your ‘why.’ There’s always going to be uncertainty, setbacks and moments of doubt, but just keep on moving.”

CAROLYN ROOKER BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER, CORDIA EDUCATION: UNION COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA OMAHA

MBJ’s Fab 50 is a profile series highlighting remarkable individuals shaping our business and nonprofit communities.

The Greater Good TEXAS TRANSPLANT BUILDS SERVANT-FIRST CAREER IN NEBRASKA

Carolyn Rooker grew up in a small town just outside of Fort Worth, Texas, but it could have been one of a hundred rural communities in Nebraska, so closely did her hometown values mirror those of the Cornhusker State. The daughter of a public works director and a teacher, Rooker learned early the value of hard work, self-improvement and service to others that elevated the community.

“My dad was always letting me go with him to work,” she said. “He would wake my brother and I up in the middle of the night and be like, ‘Come on, we’re going to fix this water leak.’ Or he’d take us along to Waco to get pipe for his different projects. Probably the most fun we had was he would put us in the bucket of the tractor, which probably wasn’t very safe, but it was still really fun.

“I have to mention my mom too, because she was an educator and I grew up having it instilled in me at an early age just how important education is. She was a strong woman and a role model in my life as well.”

Rooker attended Union College in Lincoln, where she earned a degree in social work with the idea of going into marriage and family counseling. During her time there, she also had a transformative mission experience that solidified her servant-first mentality.

“My sophomore year I was supposed to go to Nairobi, Kenya, but in 1988 there was a lot of conflict there and we were having difficulty with my visa,” she said. “The week before I was supposed to leave, they said, ‘Hey, we can’t get you into Africa. Would you go to the Marshall Islands?’ I said, ‘Well, sure. Where are the Marshall Islands?’”

Over 15 months, Rooker served as a high school teacher, an experience she looks back on today as an important building block for what would come later in her career.

“A lot of that was influenced by my upbringing, being involved in the community and trying to make a difference,” she said. “In my early teens we had moved to Alaska and there was this dental (mission) in our church. Every

“I’ve come to understand that you can’t really know where you need to go if you don’t know where you are.”

summer these four doctors would take off and they would go to the native Alaskan villages and provide free dental care. At that time, I was like, I really want to make a difference, I want be a public health nurse, I want to go do missionary work and go to these native villages and support them. It was less about wanting to travel or see the world, although I think that was a beautiful benefit of it.

“Looking back, I think the bigger picture is it taught me resiliency and the realization that I can do hard things. When I went (to the Marshall Islands) I was teaching eight high school classes and I didn’t know how I was going to do that until the time came. Then I was like, I’m going to make these lesson plans, I’m going to teach these lessons, I’m just gonna do it. I gained an understanding that when problems come up, I can keep going, I don’t have to let it freeze me. I found that when I’m passionate about something I show up as my best self and that has served me well in my career.”

By the time Rooker completed her master’s degree in social work from the University of Nebraska Omaha she had changed her career focus from social work on the micro level to a macro perspective that addresses public policy, environments and systems impacting community health on a large scale. For the next 25 years, she would serve in various nonprofit roles before being recruited into the corporate world to do energy and sustainability work for a large infrastructure company. It was a move that was not without its share of trepidation.

“When I was first approached, I wasn’t looking for a career change and having been a ‘nonprofit girl’ I wasn’t sure if I wanted the opportunity,” she said. “I quickly realized my skills were indeed transferable. I would be making a difference in the world but in a different arena, focused on sustainability and energy efficiencies.”

Almost a decade later, Rooker carried that servant mentality to Cordia where she serves as business development manager.

“One of the things that really appealed to me (at Cordia) was the opportunity to be a little more boots on the ground in the community,” she said. “In this role, I serve not only as business development bringing in new business opportunities, but I serve our current customers. I show them how to get from where they are to where they want to go.

“The thing I love most about what I do is being a thought partner to bring meaningful solutions to challenges our customers or potential customers are facing, especially knowing that our work helps create a healthier, more sustainable planet.”

At 56, Rooker has perfected the art of boosting the bottom line while maintaining a strong ethos of service to clients and their various constituents,

Help clients give by simplifying the process

For clients who are charitably inclined, donor-advised funds offer a solution that aligns tax strategy, investment growth and streamlined administration. Whether you’re a CPA, attorney or financial adviser, recommending a DAF through a trusted partner like the Omaha Community Foundation can simplify year-end planning while helping clients grow their giving potential.

Immediate deduction, flexible distribution

DAFs allow clients to make a single charitable contribution (cash, appreciated securities, business interests or other assets) and receive an immediate tax deduction, even if they choose to distribute grants to nonprofits over time.

“A common question is how clients can lower their taxes while also creating a positive impact,” said Karen Pesek, director of finance and community liaison at Pesek Law LLC. “Donors often want to understand how they can align their charitable giving with both their financial planning and their values so they’re making a difference in the most effective way possible.”

This flexibility is especially valuable for clients experiencing a high-income year, a liquidity event or looking to reduce capital gains taxes.

Invested funds mean greater long-term impact

Once contributed, assets in the DAF are invested and grow tax-free, increasing the future value available for charitable giving. At Omaha Community Foundation, clients can choose from a range of investment options designed to align with their risk tolerance and philanthropic goals.

Donor-advised Funds

Unlike traditional giving, DAFs allow charitable dollars to grow. A wellmanaged portfolio can turn a contribution into significantly more for the community over time, without additional tax implications.

One receipt, no administrative headaches

Record keeping is one of the most tangible benefits for clients and their advisors. Rather than collecting acknowledgement letters from dozens of nonprofits, DAF fundholders at Omaha Community Foundation receive one receipt for their contribution.

“Utilizing an OCF account can help streamline the giving process,” said Brian Gogh, CPA and partner at Hancock Dana. “A single check to OCF can be written at the time the gift is to be made, and the client will receive a single acknowledgement letter. … There’s no need to track the tens or hundreds of acknowledgement letters as the funds are dispersed, a welcome relief.”

Help clients plan ahead now

Don’t wait for year-end urgency. Reach out to your clients now about establishing a DAF at Omaha Community Foundation before the holiday season gets hectic. You’ll help them capture tax benefits, build a more strategic philanthropic plan and grow their giving for long-term impact.

ENTREPRENEURS’ organization

Where do you get your entrepreneurial drive?

I’ve been an entrepreneur since I quit my first job in high school to start a lawn service. That initial immersion into entrepreneurship as a teen has never left me. I don’t think I could truly work as an employee 9 to 5 ever again. What drives me the most is starting something from scratch and growing it to $1 million in revenue.

I’ve done this multiple times and I’m currently helping my CEOs turn their fractional practices into million-dollar firms that they can exit one day. Along the way we’re helping lots of companies grow and skill their businesses.

What are you most excited about for the future of your business?

We have been serving SMBs with fractional leadership for the last seven years and now the opportunity is to help SMBs build internal genetic AI agencies for all their marketing operations. I am most excited about doing this work moving forward. There’s a lot of hype around AI, but there’s a lot of true opportunity for businesses to build internal AI agents to support their marketing

operations and sales execution.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

The advice I give aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: focus on the problem you’re solving and get to know your customer base very well to validate this problem. Then and only then focus on the solution. Also, get your Ph.D. in sales; every entrepreneur has to sell their ideas to customers, stakeholders and employees over and over again.

How have you benefited from being a member of EO?

EO has given me the education that you can’t get from books or classes or even your own experience. The ability to tap into a collective group of successful entrepreneurs at various stages and in different types of businesses allows you to learn from your peers in real time and apply those learnings directly to your business. I also get to give back to that same group with my own knowledge and experience that allows others to grow their businesses.

More firms are seeing magical AI moments

There are few times in someone’s career that they witness something shockingly good and so well beyond anyone’s expectations. This is especially true in the investment world where so much thought of what the future holds is based on the past and reversions to those historical means. In other words, we’re not molecular biologists or quantum physicists that spend their days searching for worldchanging discoveries.

While we’re not comparable to the groundbreaking work of these professions, we are starting to witness a few of these pivotal moments that we’re likely to never forget. For us, the first occurred with Nvidia’s 1Q FY24 earnings report in late May 2023 where that firm gave a surreal forecast that ignited an epic surge in its share price. Now it’s happening again but with Oracle, which was formally considered to be a has-been database company that was a latecomer to cloud computing.

As we sit here today, that firm’s market valuation of roughly $680 billion has surged over 40% and is nearing $1 trillion. We expect that others will begin to have such magical moments.

It’s all due to artificial intelligence. Despite the naysayers and clickbait media reports, this megatrend is happening faster and becoming bigger than even the most optimistic experts were saying just a year ago. For example, it was only 2024 when Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang characterized AI infrastructure spend as being a $1 trillion opportunity during an earnings call. However, that number was recently upgraded to $3 to $4 trillion within the next five years. Yet, the big story that market bears and media ran with was how Nvidia’s forecast for its upcoming quarter failed to exceed analyst expectations enough. Talk about burying the lead.

What we are witnessing is nothing short of incredible, in our opinion. It’s natural for those that haven’t taken the time to understand what’s going on to be skeptical and just declare AI as a repeat of dot-com. However, consider the circumstances: The upside of these forecasts is being

measured in trillions. It’s not being funded primarily by governments or getrich-quick day traders flipping initial public offerings like past megatrends.

Also, we can no longer blame it on the Fed’s low-interest rate policy like what happened in the prior decade. Instead, this boom is being funded by the smartest minds in Silicon Valley who are on the front lines witnessing the improvements and future capability of this exciting new technology.

Instead of bending to Wall Street’s preference of generating profits and building up cash during a period of uneven economic growth, these leaders are instead doubling and tripling down on what was previously considered unheard of levels of investment.

Midlands Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in the community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. To nominate someone for this section, email news@mbj.com with the individual’s name, position, company and email.

BRTEK

Bio:

Merrick Brtek, director of workforce development at the Greater Omaha Chamber, oversees the Young Professionals program, hosting 30+ events annually to drive attraction, retention and development through education, advocacy, engagement and opportunity. The group connects directly with young professionals to link them to resources while fostering strong ties with military young professionals and veterans through collaboration with Offutt Air Force Base.

She also leads the Chamber’s Landing Crew and Back to Omaha marketing efforts, helping to attract and retain top talent in the region, and is active on several boards and committees throughout the community.

The Plainview native graduated with honors from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a degree in history and minors in classics and psychology.

What is the purpose of Young Professionals and how does programming support that purpose?

The Greater Omaha Chamber Young Professionals program serves as a catalyst for attracting and retaining talent by creating meaningful opportunities for connection, growth and community impact. Each year, the program puts on more than 40 events — including volunteer outings, professional development opportunities and community partnership gatherings — that strengthen networks and foster leadership.

Signature experiences like YP Summit, YP Week, YP Showcase and INTRO equip members with skills, civic insight and inspiration to lead, while YP membership provides exclusive access to resources and opportunities that empower young professionals to shape Omaha’s future.

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing young professionals today?

One challenge I see facing young professionals currently is finding fulfilling roles that match what they studied or aligns with their goals and passions. A way we are able to help meet this challenge is through creating space for quality networking experiences with leaders in our community. In order to achieve this, we have two separate events in the year for YPs to engage with leaders and make connections to help foster their growth.

What led you to your particular field?

Prior to working at the Greater Omaha Chamber, I was working in management roles for three small businesses

at the same time. During that time, I had the pleasure of connecting with the West Point Chamber of Commerce and fell in love with the work they were doing for the community. I learned I love connecting businesses and collaborating throughout the community. It became a huge mission of mine to create space for people to feel comfortable, at home and welcomed.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I love seeing the work I do make positive differences for those that participate in my program and the businesses we partner with in Omaha. Recently, I was brought to tears when a couple of young professionals who recently moved to Omaha told me YP has helped them feel more connected to Omaha and less homesick.

The Overlooked Risk: Why Does Business Succession Planning Matter?

Why is succession planning often overlooked?

Many owners protect their businesses with insurance, contracts and strategic planning but they neglect succession planning. Surveys show that while passing on the business is a high priority, most owners lack a formal plan. One of the main causes is the “I’ll get to it later” mentality, and the belief that there is always time to plan.

Why is a succession plan so critical?

In closely held businesses, the owner is often the decision-maker, relationship-builder and visionary. Without a plan, a sudden death, disability or retirement can create operational disruptions, family disputes, tax problems and even financial losses. A solid succession plan not only safeguards the business but also protects the owner’s legacy and the livelihoods of employees.

What are the key components of a business succession plan?

A comprehensive plan usually addresses four main areas:

• Identifying operational successors — Deciding who will take over leadership, whether a family member, key employee or management team. Some plans use an advisory board of insiders and professionals to guide the transition.

• Managing ownership transfers — Coordinating operational control with ownership succession. This often involves trusts, estate planning or buy-sell agreements to ensure smooth, tax-efficient transfers.

• Handling estate taxes and liquidity — Planning for how taxes will be paid without forcing a sale of the business, often through life insurance or IRS installment options.

• Planning for a potential sale — Recognizing that some businesses will be sold to employees, partners or third parties, and preparing for timing, valuation and tax efficiency.

How should owners approach identifying successors?

Successors should be chosen deliberately, not by default. Preparing the next leader through training and gradual responsibility builds continuity. Establishing clarity avoids power struggles and reassures employees and clients that the business will remain stable.

What about ownership and buy-sell agreements?

Ownership transfer can be complex, especially with multiple owners. A buysell agreement specifies what happens if one owner leaves or passes away. Funding mechanisms, like life insurance or seller financing, provide the liquidity needed to complete buyouts without straining the business.

How do estate taxes factor into succession planning?

For taxable estates, succession planning must include strategies to pay estate taxes without disrupting operations. Without planning, heirs may be forced to sell part of the business quickly, often at a discount, just to cover tax obligations.

Is selling the business always a last resort?

Not necessarily. For some owners, selling is the best outcome. A wellprepared plan anticipates this possibility, ensuring the sale is timed properly, the valuation is fair and taxes are minimized.

What are the most common mistakes owners make?

• Waiting too long to plan, risking sudden illness or death.

• Failing to coordinate legal, tax and financial advisors.

• Relying on verbal promises instead of formal documentation. What’s the bottom line?

Succession and estate planning are often neglected but they’re essential. With a clear plan, business owners can reduce uncertainty, protect employees and family members and ensure their life’s work continues to thrive.
