TOP THINGS TO KNOW
Sorghum trial investigates health markers
The United Sorghum Checkoff Program recently announced the launch of the first human clinical trial to evaluate whole-grain sorghum’s health benefits. Conducted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and co-funded by USCP in partnership with USDA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Commodity Board program, this landmark study will investigate how daily consumption of two whole-grain sorghum varieties — a traditional white sorghum and a phenolic-rich “sumac” sorghum — influences key health markers such as insulin resistance, inflammation and gut microbiome composition. The trial is designed as a randomized crossover study in adults with obesity. Throughout the study, researchers will measure changes in insulin resistance, as well as secondary outcomes like body weight and composition, blood pressure, blood lipids, antioxidant and inflammatory biomarkers, and gut microbiota profiles.
MassMutual, a leading mutual life insurance and financial services company, and Orion, a premier provider of tech solutions for financial advisers and enterprise firms, today announced the addition of a new wealth management solutions (WMS)/ Orion platform. This collaboration brings an integrated, flexible technology and investment experience to MassMutual’s network of more than 6,500 affiliated financial professionals nationwide.
The platform brings together essential adviser functions into a single, integrated solution, streamlining workflows, simplifying operations and boosting productivity. In addition to enhancing efficiency, the platform expands investment flexibility and supports scalable growth, enabling advisers to tailor strategies and grow their practices with confidence. This unified experience underscores MassMutual’s commitment to equipping advisers with tools that drive success and ultimately deliver better outcomes for the investors they serve.
Green Plains enters purchase agreement for ethanol plant
Green Plains Inc. announced it has entered into an asset purchase agreement with biotechnology research company POET to sell its ethanol plant in Rives, Tennessee, for $190 million in cash, inclusive of an estimated $20 million of working capital, to be adjusted at closing. Proceeds from the sale will be utilized to retire the junior mezzanine debt due in 2026 and enhance liquidity. The transaction is anticipated to close during the third quarter of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals; and contains standard representations, warranties and indemnification obligations.
“The sale of our Obion facility reflects our continued commitment to unlocking value for shareholders and strengthening our balance sheet,” Chief Executive Officer Chris Osowski said. “We have been actively pursuing opportunities that align with our long-term strategy and support disciplined capital allocation. This divestiture not only demonstrates the strength of our asset portfolio but also enables us to fully retire our junior mezzanine notes, a significant milestone in enhancing our financial flexibility and advancing Green Plains’ carbon reduction strategy.”
New Mid-States Utility location completed
Darland recently completed the new Mid-States Utility Trailer Sales facility. This nearly 60,000-square-foot expansion is located off Highway 50 and Interstate 80 in Papillion, marking a significant addition for one of the largest semi-trailer dealers in the United States.
“The size and scope of this building was going to require a contractor with significant experience,” Mid-States Utility Vice President Al Weber said. “After evaluating a number of different providers, our selection process ended with choosing Darland Construction.”
The new location stands as a key regional hub designed to enhance Mid-States Utility’s operational capabilities and customer service. The project features a modern, state-of-the-art trailer shop, an expansive parts warehouse, a driver’s lounge and modern administrative offices. A notable aspect of the project includes over 11 acres of exterior paving, designed to accommodate the extensive inventory and traffic flow of large semi-trailers.

Regulatory hurdle stalls Big Grove Brewery expansion
Iowa-based Big Grove Brewery faces operational delays at its planned Nebraska taphouse location following a licensing setback with state regulators. The Nebraska Liquor Control Commission rejected the company’s application for a craft brewer’s license, citing concerns over the brewery’s corporate structure and existing manufacturing operations.
The commission determined that Big Grove’s attempt to establish a separate business entity to qualify for the craft brewer’s exemption violated regulatory requirements. This exemption, designed to support local brewing operations, was deemed inappropriate given the company’s established manufacturing presence in the alcohol beverage industry.
Big Grove is now pursuing an alternative licensing path through a liquor manufacturer’s license application. While this option would permit the taphouse to begin operations at the Catalyst building, it would restrict the establishment’s beverage menu exclusively to Big Grove’s proprietary beer products.
The licensing challenge highlights the complex regulatory landscape facing multistate brewery operations as they seek to expand into new markets while navigating varying state liquor laws and local business preferences.

OMAHA’S ARTISTIC VISION TO LIFE
Omaha has long held a place in its heart for the performing arts. The Orpheum Theater, for example, has been a part of the city since the 1800s. In the early 2000s, however, a new vision and expansion of the performing arts in Omaha came to fruition, helmed by Omaha Performing Arts (O-pa) President Joan Squires.
Ahead of the Holland Performing Arts Center’s 20th anniversary concert on Oct. 3, MBJ sat down with Squires for an in-depth and personal interview.
MBJ: You came to town at a really exciting time. When you were first told “Omaha” and you first came to see this city, what were your impressions?
Squires: When I first came to the city, there was no CHI Center, there was no Union Pacific headquarters. But I thought there was tremendous potential and I thought, you know, I think this is the right place because the pieces are here, and (O-pa) can be part of this emerging growth that was happening in Omaha.
MBJ: How has O-pa been integral as a driver of the growth in the urban core and how is your strategic plan aligned with that?
Squires: I think there’s a number of things that O-pa has contributed to the tremendous development that’s happened in the urban core. It started with the Holland Center along with the Orpheum Theater because the Orpheum, which was hosting wonderful performances, had no room for the touring artists that were skipping our city. In opening the Holland, we were able to have a true, dedicated world-class concert hall along with the Orpheum Theater, so that we could take advantage of the strengths of both of those buildings.
Today, we bring in the best touring productions of Broadway, dance, jazz, speakers and other entertainers. We contribute over $61 million of economic impact, and that’s before the Tenaska Center opens. We bring about 400,000 people a year to the city annually, and around our facilities now you have bars and restaurants and parking and economic opportunities for jobs that have really developed since we came to town.
MBJ: Let’s talk a bit about revenue versus expenses and how much of it is donor driven.
Squires: We depend both on earned and contributed revenues. Earned revenue, for us, is quite high because we sell a lot of tickets, from Broadway to popular events and more, but we depend both on those ticket sales along with rentals of the facilities coupled with important philanthropic support. We depend on individuals, corporations, foundations and some public support. There is a public funding component; our public funding is a small part of our budget but it’s an important part
MBJ: Are you finding it harder or easier these days to get people out?
Squires: How we reach people has changed; I don’t know if

Today, we bring in the best touring productions of Broadway, dance, jazz, speakers and other entertainers. it’s harder or easier, but how we are able to get their attention has really shifted. Traditional media, as we all know, has changed to online and social and there’s so many other aspects. I think we’re able to get people out but there’s so much demand for their attention that our marketing efforts have changed enormously over two decades.
MBJ: What sort of ROIs and metrics are you using to determine success?
Squires: We fully analyze every show before we book it so that we know what the estimated costs will be, the ticket sales, pricing and our estimate of what it sells in other markets and what we think Omaha will do. Factors of success certainly are how many tickets we sell but you can’t always say a sellout is always the factor because a concert might be a huge success when 500 people show up. Because our halls just happen to be constructed larger, 500 people might be very successful.
MBJ: Can you name a time that your team was instrumental in getting a very successful show here that you might have thought, ‘I don’t know, but OK, we’ll try this?’
Squires: Yes, we have an amazing team here: approximately 100 full-time, and about 200 part-time employees plus we have a board of directors of 11 and a volunteer corps of 550.
There was a show that the team brought to me called “Reset,” and it’s an immersive experience that was held at Steelhouse. First of all, I had no idea what a sound bath was and I wasn’t sure what it could do, but we’re trying to use our facilities in new ways. So, we took a chance on it and we sold out two shows of it. It was so successful, we’re bringing it back.
MBJ: How is technology helping to drive the arts in Omaha?
Squires: We are about the live performance, so we are about bringing people together to experience it in a way you can’t do on a device. So, that piece is consistent.
What has changed is how we reach folks through marketing. I think one of the areas has been through Ticket Omaha, where tickets have gone from paper tickets to having everything on your device now. It’s also given us data so that we can market to people who we think are interested in certain types of shows.
At our Broadway shows, in particular, we use something called Gala Pro which is closed captioning on your phone so that you can sit there and also read the dialogue and the lyrics on sort of a black screen with red letters so that it doesn’t disturb anyone around you, even if you aren’t always able to hear what’s happening on stage.
MBJ: What do people not understand about O-pa?
Squires: I think people don’t always appreciate how much I think we contribute to the economic impact of the city and our role in attracting and retaining a workforce as we look to continue to develop the city and bring businesses here. I think the role that the arts and entertainment play is really important for those people who want to move here and either have their families get involved or they themselves want to come to shows. This is part of the fabric that I think makes Omaha such a great city, both what Omaha Performing Arts brings and also our fellow arts institutions.

MBJ: YOU HAVE A RARE NIGHT IN WITH YOUR FAMILY, ARE YOU PLAYING BOARD GAMES OR WATCHING MOVIES?
SQUIRES: WE’RE LIKELY WATCHING A MOVIE OR A STREAMING SERIES, ALTHOUGH WE DO LIKE BOARD GAMES SUCH AS SCRABBLE.
MBJ: WHAT IS ONE MUSIC GROUP, OR WHO IS ONE MUSICIAN, YOU ENJOY THAT MIGHT SURPRISE READERS?
SQUIRES: THAT’S NOT AN EASY QUESTION – I LIKE A LOT OF DIFFERENT GENRES AND ARTISTS. PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED THAT I LIKE BRUNO MARS.
MBJ: IF YOU COULD SIT DOWN AND HAVE DINNER WITH ANYONE THROUGHOUT TIME, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
SQUIRES: I’VE ALWAYS BEEN IMPRESSED WITH WOMEN WHO BROKE BARRIERS, SO IT WOULD PROBABLY BE SOMEONE LIKE AMELIA EARHART OR MARIE CURIE OR MARIAN ANDERSON. I’D WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT WHAT OBSTACLES THEY FACED AND HOW THEY ACHIEVED THEIR VISION AND GOALS.
MBJ: IT’S BEEN REPORTED THAT THE FIRST MUSICAL YOU SAW WAS “THE SOUND OF MUSIC” AT AGE 7. WHAT WAS IT ABOUT THAT SHOW THAT GOT YOU HOOKED ON MUSICAL THEATER?
SQUIRES: I LOVED THAT SHOW AND HOW THE MUSIC WAS FULLY INTEGRATED TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE CHARACTERS’ EMOTIONS. ALL OF THE ELEMENTS CAME TOGETHER TO MAKE THE STORY MEMORABLE – THE MUSIC, CHOREOGRAPHY, ACTING, SCENERY, LIGHTING. I ADORED IT ALL, ESPECIALLY THE MUSIC, AND WATCHED IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.
50 YEARS OF downtown
The Heartbeat of Omaha
BY RICHARD D. BROWN, WITH ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY DAISY HUTZELL-RODMAN
Residents and visitors to downtown Omaha today see a vibrant, bustling area of the city that exemplifies years of planning and growth.
In the 1970s, the city was starting to see the renovation of its downtown, a resurgence and reversal of fortunes from the expansion to the suburbs that happened in the 1950s and 1960s: Center Mall at 42nd and Center streets was built in 1955, Crossroads in 1960, Countryside Village at 87th and Pacific streets in 1953, Rockbrook Village at 108th Street and West Center Road in 1963, and Southroads in 1965 in Bellevue.
In a 1990 post-retirement interview with 25-year Omaha Planning Director Alden Aust, the then-75-year-old noted the answers to what the downtown retail community sought in the 1960s were not addressed as rapidly as they should have been. The addition of housing downtown in the mid-to-late 1960s didn’t come soon enough.
“If housing had been in place in 1965 in structures that were available, such as the vacant Union Outfitting, Regis Hotel and old First National Building, the addition of apartments on the upper floors could have kept retailing alive,” he said.
Business groups and advocates never stopped banging the drum for resuscitating
downtown. In a 1975 interview, Keith Carter, executive vice president and general manager of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, said, “(Since 1967) I’ve found that you don’t find any better people than in Omaha,” and vowed to muster that to “strengthen the entire metro area as a cohesive unit.”
Beginning in the 1970s, mayoral administrations sought to generate momentum for downtown development. The formation and strengthening of leadership was built upon over the years as challenge after challenge was faced: closing off South 16th Street for construction of one of the city’s largest hotel and convention center facilities, addressing the appearance and viability of Omaha’s entryway on Abbott Drive from Eppley, and evaluating how to strengthen retailing downtown.
Crucial to downtown development was the concerted effort to close down the 23-acre Asarco plant at 5th and Douglas streets. Proponents of the move lobbed a unique argument: the health of children, especially those living in the Near North and Near South neighborhoods. Owners had made a $10 million upgrade to the 122-year-old metal processor by the early 1990s, but environmental groups and federal regulators, among others, successfully led a campaign for demolition of the plant in 1996.
Today, that land serves the needs of nearby Charles Schwab Field, CHI Health Center and dozens of nearby food and drink and retail businesses.
Greater Omaha Chamber CEO/President Heath Mello said the declines found downtown in the 1970s needed a crucial reversal.
“The biggest challenge was reversing the population and economic exodus while reimagining downtown as a vibrant, living place,” he told MBJ recently.
As more and more amenities came to fruition, the tide started to turn. ConAgra’s decision in the 1980s to locate its headquarters on Omaha’s riverfront was a major bet on Omaha’s future and increased residential living in the urban core fundamentally changed downtown’s rhythm by shifting the area from a 9-to-5 office hub to a 24/7 neighborhood.
Roger Dixon, president and CEO of Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority (MECA), knew that Omaha was, and was destined to be, a great city from the moment he set foot in the area.
“I landed at the airport and rode in a cab along Abbott, As I came up over the viaduct, on the right was a somewhat operating railroad yard, and on the left was the port of Omaha with what was left of the smelt plants,” Dixon said. “I asked the cab driver where the new arena convention center was going to go, and he pointed over to the railroad yard, and I thought at the time, ‘This community’s got vision.’”
That vision has come to fruition over the last several years. In March 2022, the city unveiled its 30-30-30 plan with the goal to attract 30,000 new jobs CONTINUED

and 30,000 new residents to the city’s urban core within 30 years. Several efforts are central to this project, including the revitalization of the riverfront, the Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of American Park, Lewis and Clark Landing, and more.
“I think that was a game changer in itself, that they filled in the lagoon in Gene Leahy and basically made it possible to join the south Old Market to the north Old Market where people were comfortable walking around there,” Dixon said.
The strategic plan target area is anchored on the east with the RiverFront redevelopment, and on the west with UNMC. The area starts at 35th Street in Council Bluffs and runs west to 48th Street in Omaha, bordered on the north by Cuming Street and on the south with Leavenworth Street.
Jay Noddle, president and CEO of Noddle companies, framed the company’s development, the Builders District, and Omaha’s broader urban core strategy as
a long-term, collaborative, mixed-use approach that blends business, education, housing and public space — anchored by major institutions like Kiewit and Creighton University, and supported by infrastructure like the streetcar. The effort aims to create a billion-dollar-plus urban ecosystem that grows vibrancy downtown while complementing suburban development.
“That scale of growth requires us to think long-term, and to build a framework that can support it,” Noddle said.
The Builder’s District, which started with the Kiewit University in 2021, connects North Downtown amenities to areas such as Creighton University, which had, in some ways, been isolated from the downtown. This led to reinvestment by the university and other companies.
“You measure a mixed-use project’s success by what happens at its fringe,”

Noddle said. “When adjacent landowners start reinvesting, you know the project is working.”
Also changing the landscape of downtown is the controversial streetcar project, a mass-transit project announced Jan. 26, 2022, by then-Mayor Jean Stothert. The project is currently in one of its most disruptive phases, with the relocation of gas lines on Harney Street and sewer work affecting 8th Street and Capitol Avenue, and temporary road closures, detours and lane restrictions in midtown and downtown areas, affecting Farnam and Harney Streets at Midtown. At the Aug. 18 Omaha Streetcar Authority meeting, interim director Rick Gustafson reported that $5 million was spent during the month of July, and the project is staying within budget.
When completed, the project is expected to be a free service that will enable people to park at, or walk to, a pickup point, and ride around the thriving urban area that has become the heartbeat of Omaha.
“The streetcar has already spurred about $2 billion in announced projects, and we expect $4 billion when all is said and done,” said David Fanslau, city planning director. “That’s a generational investment.”
The capstone of the downtown renaissance is expected to be completed in fall 2026 with Mutual of Omaha’s 44-story, 677-foot-tall headquarters tower. It is expected to all lead to a thriving community that will enable reinvestment in the city.
“When you have that much investment in downtown, one of the things that you get is an opportunity to really grow the tax base, and so when you grow that tax base, then that gives the city opportunities to be able to do some things in terms of the partnership,” said Omaha Mayor John Ewing. “Then you also have the streetcar; you’re going to have billions of dollars of new taxable property.”

Downtown Omaha’s Renaissance POWERED BY CORDIA SPONSORED content
BY JASON HILL, CORDIA MIDWEST REGIONAL PRESIDENT
Downtown Omaha is undergoing a striking renaissance — reflected in new developments, revitalized public spaces and a shared vision of a smarter, greener urban core. At the heart of this transformation is Cordia Omaha, the district energy provider quietly powering more than 70% of the central business district. As Omaha celebrates five decades of modern urban evolution, Cordia’s role underscores the importance of resilient, sustainable infrastructure in shaping the city’s economic future.
Founded in 1978, Cordia Omaha has grown from a legacy utility into a leading energy innovator. Its Howard Street Energy Center — designed and built in 1967 by renowned architectural firm Leo A Daly — was originally part of Northern Natural Gas and served a small core of downtown buildings. Over the next several decades, ownership transitions — from RJS to NRG and ultimately Kolberg Kravis Roberts — ushered in modernization, innovation and a renewed focus on community integration and environmental stewardship. Today, Cordia provides heating and cooling to Omaha landmarks including Creighton University, WoodmenLife Tower, the Downtown YMCA, the Joslyn Art Museum, Kiewit Corporate Headquarters, Omaha Performing Arts and First National Bank of Omaha.
impurities, reducing corrosion, lowering chemical use and conserving water — further strengthening the sustainability profile of the district energy network.
The origins and evolution of district energy
The concept of district energy is far from new. Its roots can be traced back to ancient Rome, where aqueduct-fed hot water warmed public baths and homes. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, U.S. cities began to adopt centralized steam systems to serve dense downtown districts. Omaha was an early participant in this trend, recognizing that shared infrastructure could bring efficiency and resilience to its growing commercial core.
District energy systems work by producing steam, hot water, or chilled water at a central energy center and distributing it to nearby buildings through underground pipes. This eliminates the need for individual boilers and chillers, freeing up building space while reducing emissions and enhancing reliability. Today’s modern systems integrate advanced controls, low-carbon technologies and renewable energy sources — making them more sustainable than ever before.
Cordia’s Omaha network represents a fusion of this ancient innovation with modern clean technology. The system is engineered to deliver exceptional performance and energy efficiency, boasting a 99.99% reliability rate — minimizing downtime and ensuring consistent service to customers regardless of external conditions.
Leading the charge in renewable energy
In 2024, Cordia Omaha achieved a major milestone by transitioning to 100% renewable electricity — procured from local renewable sources — at its Energy Center. Through a partnership with Omaha Public Power District, all electricity used to produce thermal energy for downtown customers now comes from wind sources. This initiative builds on the company’s broader decarbonization strategy, which includes a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and a target of net-zero emissions by 2050.
This renewable electricity transition is more than a sustainability checkbox — it directly benefits customers by decarbonizing their energy footprint and aligning with their environmental, social and governance commitments. It also ensures that as Omaha continues to grow upward and outward, that growth is underpinned by clean, efficient and resilient infrastructure.
Cordia has also implemented a reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment system to enhance energy center operations. The RO system improves efficiency by removing
Supporting urban core growth and economic resilience
Cordia’s strategic alignment with Omaha’s future infrastructure is evident in its role supporting the city’s Urban Core Strategic Plan and the upcoming Omaha Streetcar project. As the city anticipates thousands of new housing units, commercial developments and transportation improvements, Cordia is collaborating with stakeholders to future-proof its network — expanding capacity, coordinating underground utility work and integrating with nextgeneration mobility and smart-city technologies.
Creighton University’s integration into the Cordia system is a prime example of scalable, community-based energy solutions. The 2020 expansion enabled efficient, reliable service to many buildings across the historic campus, reinforcing Cordia’s ability to serve institutional customers with complex sustainability requirements.
With more than five decades of experience in downtown Omaha and a growing national footprint, Cordia brings stability, vision and technical expertise to the region’s evolving energy landscape. Whether it’s powering iconic landmarks or enabling transformative urban development, Cordia remains dedicated to building an Omaha that’s not just bigger — but better, cleaner and more resilient.
As Omaha looks ahead to the next 50 years of downtown growth, the question isn’t just how tall the skyline will reach but what powers the community beneath it. Cordia Omaha, with its robust district energy system and commitment to 100% renewable electricity, is ensuring that energy is not an obstacle to progress — but a platform for prosperity.

Aiming Higher, Not Harder
SPEAKER TO CHALLENGE ENTREPRENEURS’ THINKING
Benjamin Hardy, Ph.D., believes most entrepreneurs hold themselves back by thinking too small. The psychologist, author and co-founder of Scaling.com will bring his message of focus, elimination and transformation to Omaha’s HUSTLE Conference in October.
Hardy’s new book, “The Science of Scaling,” was released July 29 and offers the framework for this belief. This New York Times bestseller, published by Hay House Business, lays out what Hardy calls a rigorous, science-based approach to achieving extensive growth. He argues the principles apply not only to business leaders, but to anyone pursuing growth or reinvention.
A career built on bold goals
Hardy cofounded Scaling.com to help entrepreneurs grow their companies tenfold in under three years. The company’s coaching is grounded in psychology and strategy rather than surface-level motivation. He previously authored multiple bestselling titles, including ”10X Is Easier Than 2X,” co-written with Dan Sullivan.
Hardy lives in Orlando with his wife and seven children. He blends academic training with practical lessons drawn from coaching business leaders, athletes and creators.
Why 10X is easier than 2X
Hardy first encountered the idea of 10X growth 10 years ago. It struck him as both counterintuitive and liberating.
“Going 10X is easier than going 2X because 10X forces you to simplify,” he said. “Two times is just working harder. Ten times requires a different model.”
He traces the concept to the Pareto principle, the idea that 80 percent of results come from 20 percent of actions. With Sullivan, he reframed it: eliminate the 80 percent that holds you back and expand the 20 percent that drives progress.
According to Hardy, the mistake most entrepreneurs make is trying to add more. “Growth comes from subtraction. What you say no to matters more than what you say yes to.”
Time as a filter
Hardy often frames goals through the lens of time. He says the future is not just a distant point but a filter through which people make choices in the present.
“Your goals are the filter,” he said. “If the goal is 2X, you’ll make small tweaks. If the goal is 10X, you’ll reframe everything.”
He outlines a structure he calls “Frame, Floor, Focus.” The frame sets the vision. The floor establishes what you will no longer tolerate or accept. The focus is where resources and energy flow. Raising the floor — retiring the old version of yourself or your company — becomes essential.
“You can’t create the future with the same system that created the past,” Hardy said. “You have to let go, with compassion for your past self, and build something new.”
Leadership through others
Central to Hardy’s philosophy is the shift from “How?” to “Who?” He argues that most entrepreneurs fail to scale because they try to solve problems alone instead of trusting people around them.
“The biggest barrier is small goals,” Hardy said. “The second barrier is failing to build leaders. If you overshadow your team, you’ll only create followers.”
Hardy cites self-determination theory, a core psychological model. People need autonomy, mastery and strong relationships. When leaders overcontrol, they undermine all three, preventing the development of true ownership.
BENJAMIN HARDY, PH.D.
Scaling organizations
At the company level, Hardy stresses the importance of clarity. Goals cannot stay private or vague; they must be explicit and visible across the organization.
“When you introduce a new goal, half your team will resist,” he said. “Organizations are systems designed to defend themselves. That’s why you need to set the right floor and make clear commitments.”
Hardy distinguishes between wrong-fit people, who may resist transformation, and right-fit people who embrace challenge. Eliminating complexity and misalignment clears the path to growth.
Simplify before you systemize
One of Hardy’s strongest warnings is against operationalizing complexity. He emphasizes radical simplification before processes are locked in.
“Elon Musk says the biggest mistake is optimizing what shouldn’t exist,” Hardy said. “Jobs did the same at Apple, cutting 350 products down to a handful. Nike lost focus when it tried to do everything.”
For Hardy, simplification is not just efficiency — it is survival. A system built around unnecessary steps will collapse under scale.
The investor filter
Hardy also speaks to how entrepreneurs attract and work with investors. He draws on strategist Richard Rummelt, who described great strategy as enabling “unanticipated growth.”
Which goal is worth giving your life to? Scaling isn’t just about money. It’s about transformation and impact.

HUSTLE conference
Aiming Higher, Not Harder
SPEAKER TO CHALLENGE ENTREPRENEURS’ THINKING
“Big goals filter out the wrong investors,” Hardy said. “One aligned investor is better than five wrong ones.”
When entrepreneurs present a 10X vision, they must do so with rigor. Hardy argues that planning, evidence and discipline — not hype — win trust. The right investors, he said, will lean in when they see ambition married with clarity.
Misapplied 10X thinking
Hardy warns against common pitfalls. One is treating goals as stressors rather than filters. Another is trying to scale a process rather than a business model. A third is avoiding big goals altogether out of fear of failure.
He shares the example of a client, Pamela, who led a $25 million legacy company. For years she attempted to scale product lines that had no market growth potential. Only when she shifted focus to services did the company unlock the possibility of $300 million in revenue.
Meaning and purpose
Hardy’s work also connects with deeper meaning. He often cites Viktor Frankl, author of “Man’s Search for Meaning,” who argued that humans thrive when they pursue purpose greater than themselves.
“Which goal is worth giving your life to?” Hardy asks. “Scaling isn’t just about money. It’s about transformation and impact.”
Hardy views 10X growth not as an exercise in ambition alone but as a vehicle for personal reinvention. The question, he says, is not what entrepreneurs want to achieve but who they must become.
Preparing for HUSTLE
Hardy suggests conference attendees read “The Science of Scaling” before the event. The audiobook is available free at Scaling.com.
His earlier book, “10X Is Easier Than 2X,” carries a foreword from author and motivational speaker Tony Robbins, who echoed Hardy’s theme: people remain stuck because they aim too small.
Hardy’s challenge to Omaha’s entrepreneurs is to eliminate distractions, focus on the future and pursue goals worth total commitment.
“Strategy is mostly about what you don’t do,” Hardy said. “The right goals will change how you see today. The right floors will keep you from falling back. The right focus will make 10X not just possible but inevitable.”

Caught between rising health care costs and rising expectations? There’s a better way forward.
The numbers tell the story: Health care costs have climbed by an average of 5% every year since 2020, and some studies predict they could rise by up to 9% in 2026. At the same time, employees expect predictable, personalized and affordable care, along with perks such as wellness programs and digital health tools.
The result: Employers are feeling squeezed from both sides as costs increase and expectations grow.
A promising option: Partnered health care
Partnered health care offers a way to align around shared goals and measurable outcomes. It brings together employers, health insurance providers, doctors and employees to create a more connected, efficient care experience. Instead of each group working in silos, providers share information, insurers support proactive treatment and employees receive care that’s easier to access and understand.
Care that connects the dots
Here’s how it might look in practice: An employee managing a chronic condition, such as diabetes, has a care team — including a primary care physician, a specialist and a health coach — that communicates and collaborates. The insurer supports the treatment plan proactively and the employee receives reminders, digital tools and coaching to stay on track. The result: fewer complications, fewer missed workdays and lower overall costs.
For employers, this means fewer costly surprises and better control over spending. For employees, it means care that’s personalized, consistent and focused on keeping them healthy, not just treating them when they’re sick.
Decades in the making, ready for today’s demands
In a sense, partnered health care isn’t new. Models such as accountable care organizations, or ACOs, have existed since the early 2000s, rewarding providers for improving outcomes and reducing costs. These efforts helped lay the foundation for what coordinated care looks like today — more integrated, more tech-enabled and

insurers are embracing coordinated care as a practical response to a system under strain.
Smarter spending, healthier outcomes
Medica understands what Nebraska employers are up against. It’s not a typical health plan — it’s a nonprofit organization with more than 50 years of experience putting people first. Its partnered model centers on affordable, highquality care tailored to each member’s needs.
What sets Medica apart is its close collaboration with local providers. By working as one team, Medica helps reduce duplicate tests, improves communication across care teams, and makes smarter use of health care dollars. This integrated system helps ensure employees get the right care at the right time, leading to better outcomes and greater satisfaction.
What’s more, it works:
• 91% of members say their plan meets or exceeds their needs
• More than 95% choose to stay with Medica year after year
Take the next step toward smarter coverage
The pressure on employers is real — but so is the opportunity. Medica’s partnered health care model can help organizations control costs while delivering the kind of care

Armed with recipes from the old country, brothers Alfred and Joe Cascio took a chance in 1933, opening a small bar and grill called Rinky Dink in the heart of Omaha’s Little Italy.
In 1946, the brothers opened Cascio’s on 10th Street. One of Omaha’s longest-running family-owned restaurants, the spot is an enduring anchor of the neighborhood.
Current owner Alfie Cascio noted the restaurant’s multiple generations of family ownership as a big reason for Cascio’s survival over 80 years.
“I started working here when I was 14, and really, even younger, when I used to work on the weekends, mopping the floors,” he said. “I used to come in with my grandpa in the mornings. I guess it was just in my blood. I had siblings who all worked here and ended up leaving. I was the one who kept going.”
Third-generation owner
Cascio took over the business from his father, Larry, in 2008, and has preserved Cascio’s role as a pseudo-history museum with its sports trophy case in the lobby and vintage appearance.
“I have a lot of people who love that,” Cascio said. “We’ve never changed the upstairs. I mean, I’ve recarpeted, painted and stuff but (customers) all love nostalgia, even though we had the fire in 1980, so the building’s only 45 years old. We’ve never really messed with the upstairs, because people like it; there’s no windows. That’s a big comment all the time.
“Out-of-towners come in and they think that this used to be a
bowling alley and that the showcase was where the candy display was,” he continued. “I’ve heard this probably 100 times over the years; people think that, but it was really a pharmacy.”
Cascio’s is a testament to the south Omaha work ethic, wading through the waves caused by recession and pandemic alike, losing only three of its 45 employees along the way.
Culinary stalwart
Besides employees, customers have also remained loyal over the years, Cascio said, accustomed to being served a small dish of mostaccioli or spaghetti alongside a potato or vegetable with their entree. Cascio’s is also a favorite for parties and large celebrations.
“It’s just giving them good food service, at a reasonable price, even though pricing is getting so expensive anymore,” he said. “I get people, still regular customers, they’re like, ‘Jeez, you’re getting expensive.’ It takes a big, big number to hit with all of our utilities, because it’s such a large place. So, it’s tough.
“I have people who come in every year for anniversaries. We had one couple who just had their 70th wedding anniversary here. They got married here and they come back to the restaurant every year. My customers are like my family, you know; they’re loyal to you because they feel like there’s a friendship there, and so do I.”
Cascio succinctly summed up his secret to longevity in the restaurant business.
“Just show up to work every day and respect your employees,” he said.

Caring Like Family MAKOVICKA PHYSICAL THERAPY BUILDS WINNING TEAM
During his four-year career with the National Football League’s Arizona Cardinals, Joel Makovicka always knew he wanted to return to Nebraska. Possessed of a long interest in health care, he received a doctorate in physical therapy and opened Makovicka Physical Therapy in 2009.
“My dad was a physical therapist and I saw how much his work impacted his patients,” Makovicka said. “I was an athlete growing up all my life. I played all different sports, most notably football, and so I had access to physical therapy growing up, and it helped me with injuries. It helped me with my mobility and strength.”
Makovicka’s love for his home state played a role in creating his own physical therapy company.
“Nebraska has done so much for me growing up here,” he said. “I wanted to create an outstanding physical therapy company where I could make the biggest impact on the citizens of Nebraska. That’s kind of how it came to be.”
Having grown to more than 150 employees in 21 clinics across the state, Makovicka has strived to create a small-town feel where staff and patients know each other.
“I have small-town roots,” Makovicka said. “I played eight-man football in high school. We try to recreate that in our therapy practice.
“We see people who are going through a hard time in their lives, where they have pain, they have an injury. They’ve just had surgery. We see them two or three times a week, so we really get to know them and we get to know their families.”
The Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame inductee knew he was on the right path to create Makovicka Physical Therapy as he met the people who fit his goal. Hearkening back to his football days, Makovicka said he relied on the belief that every successful program starts with the right “coaching staff” and recruiting the right “players.”
“We started with a very strong team of physical therapists,
meeting the right people at the right time who shared my vision and had the patient-first focus, who brought complementary skills, experience and expertise to the space of physical therapy, and then we continued to develop those team members into company leaders,” Makovicka said.
“As owners, that’s what we believe in: a strong team develops the people within the organization. We believe in developing those people that we bring on early to be the best leaders.”
After laying the foundation, Makovicka set out to ensure each clinic was community-focused, an attribute that continues to this day.
“We like to hire people who live in those communities where our clinics are located, not only the individual communities but even down to the neighborhood,” he said. “We try to train our staff to be patient advocates, helping our patients with navigating their insurance plans or knowing who the physicians are so we can ensure patients receive the care they need.”
Community outreach is also vital to the company. Creating the Makovicka Cares program, the company supports causes such as diaper drives and school supplies as well as donating to veterans causes, he said.
Not surprisingly, teambuilding heads the list of things Makovicka would recommend any entrepreneur should master.
”Surround yourself with great people and invest in the development of those people,” he said. “Don’t think you know everything and you have the expertise of everything; build a well-rounded, efficient machine.
“I think there’s a Nelson Mandela quote that it’s better to lead from behind and put others in front, especially when you’re celebrating great things and nice things are occurring. We take the front line when there’s danger and the people appreciate that leadership.”

Longevity and community engagement
People can feel the nostalgia when walking into Ted & Wally’s Ultra Premium Ice Cream shop. Perhaps it’s the smell of waffle cones that brings back memories of getting ice cream as a child, or seeing the Standard Oil sign hanging on the wall of the Benson shop, a nod to the original tenant. The walls of both locations could tell so many stories of the people who stop for their first scoop or have eaten the shop’s ice cream for decades. There’s something about ice cream that elevates the spirit.
Joseph Pittack and Jeanne Langan, the brother-sister team that co-owns Ted & Wally’s, have been committed to making ice cream the old-fashioned way — with rock salt and ice using White Mountain ice cream freezers — since they purchased the Old Market location in 2001. The machines are antiques, Pittack said.
“We have to have parts made when they break because machines like these are no longer being manufactured,” he said. Some of the machines are more than 100 years old and can produce 20 quarts of ice cream at a time, Pittack said. There are currently four machines in active duty, two at each shop, churning new flavors daily.
Thousands of flavors
Guests will find the tried-and-true vanilla and chocolate flavors among the 16 canisters of ice cream in each shop, but they will also discover recipes such as Sweet Corn Crème Brule that Langan created using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
“We have over 3,000 from-scratch flavors, and are pioneers with that in the local market,” Langan said. “We use local whenever we can.”
Ted & Wally’s ice cream does not contain stabilizers or preservatives, and ingredients may be sourced from local restaurants and farms to make ice cream daily in small batches. That means when the shop runs out of a flavor, it is gone.
The team’s creativity comes into play to make the most of their ingredients. For instance, the shop received twice as much sweet corn as normal this season, so to keep it from going to waste, and to diversify menu offerings, half of the corn was roasted for new recipes with a smoked corn flavor.
In addition to the vast variety of flavorings, Ted & Wally’s takes pride in using 20% butterfat in its ice cream, more than many ice cream shops in the nation, to give it a rich texture and mouthfeel.
Langan has a passion for Ted & Wally’s that goes back to the late 1990s when she was working in the Old Market store that opened in 1986. After four years in the business, she learned that the owners wanted to retire and sell the beloved ice cream shop.
“I didn’t want it to turn into a franchise,” Langan said. The siblings discussed the purchase and the rest is history that continues to be made in the two locations.
The company has five full-time managers and a summer seasonal crew that can top 50 employees, including staff that have worked for more than a decade for the family-owned business.
Ted & Wally’s hosts tours of its ice cream shops to schoolchildren, showing how batches are made, the creative process that goes into creating multiple flavors and, of course, allowing the youngsters to taste the finished product. Free-scoop certificates are also issued to area nonprofits and the company also makes donations of ice cream to organizations for fundraisers.
Langan and Pittack are committed to sharing their love of ice cream with anyone who chooses to stop by for a sweet treat, ensuring that the walls of their shops have more stories to hold for years to come.
“We’ve been in business 24 years. Most don’t make it past five (years),” Pittack said.

Data, Decoded TODATA MAKES BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FEEL HUMAN
While many businesses drown in data, Todata Analytics builds lifeboats. The Omaha-based company transforms complex data into powerful decision-making tools through industryspecific solutions, intelligent automation and AI-powered insights. Under the combined leadership of Chief Executive Officer Nicole Osborn and President Ben Titus, Todata helps companies grow without the typical technical burden and is quietly changing the way industries like accounting, clinical research, legal services and logistics think about analytics.
Bold vision
Todata began in 2017 as Scarpello Group, founded by Ben Titus, to close a critical gap he noticed in the business world of too many teams having data but lacking understanding.
“I’ve always been drawn to solving complex problems with simple, scalable solutions,” Titus said. “The inspiration came from working inside companies that were drowning in data but starving for insight.”
This realization led to Todata’s innovative Grades suite, including CPAGrades, a solution that connects to accounting firms’ existing software with zero migration or disruption. Instead of waiting weeks for static reports, clients now access real-time answers to key questions about profitability, efficiency and performance. These insights can be delivered by “Tod,” the company’s AI-powered analyst, who translates advanced analytics into plain language for anyone, technical or not.
A major turning point in the company’s history came when Titus partnered with Osborn, first as a client, then as a business partner. Osborn brought a real-world understanding of what
growing companies need, having scaled Meridian Clinical Research into a national leader before its sale in 2022.
“Partnering with Nicole was a defining moment,” Titus said. “She brought strategic insight, leadership and a deep understanding of the customer’s perspective. Her vision has shaped Todata’s direction and growth in powerful ways.”
Though Todata’s clients now span the U.S., its commitment to Omaha runs deep. With headquarters in Blackstone Plaza, the company is intentional about building opportunity in the community.
“We’ve made a deliberate effort to hire and grow talent here in Omaha, especially those who might not traditionally see themselves in tech,” Titus explained. “We mentor interns, partner with universities and build careers in data and AI right here at home.”
This commitment mirrors Osborn’s own legacy at Meridian, where she helped direct more than $3 million in local philanthropic giving.
Unique model
What sets Todata apart is not just its products, but how it delivers them.
“We’re not just a tool,” Titus said. “We’re a fully managed business intelligence solution with an AI chat interface. Clients don’t need to hire a data team or build dashboards; we do it all, fast. It’s actionable, affordable intelligence.”
This model makes Todata especially valuable for professional services firms that lack in-house analytics capacity but still need to move with speed and precision.

Titus credits much of Todata’s success to agility, reflection and staying mission-aligned.
“Letting go is just as important as holding on,” he said. “Whether it’s a system or a mindset, learning to let go at the right time has made room for innovation.”
Reaching the $1 million revenue milestone confirmed that the company’s value proposition is resonating.
“We hit that before rebranding or launching our current platform,” Titus said. “Now we’re scaling to 250-plus customers across industries. The growth is just beginning.”
Titus encouraged young entrepreneurs to balance ambition with humility.

Greeting Cards to Pottery Wheels FOUNDER TURNS CHILDHOOD PASSION INTO CREATIVE HUB
True Pottery owner Leticia Andrade envisions her downtown Omaha studio as a spot where artists of all backgrounds can gather and enjoy their talents.
“The intention is to try to bring arts together, so someone can say, ‘Oh, I feel comfortable with drawing, and then I can maybe start thinking about drawing or painting,’ or, ‘I’m used to acrylics. How can I just go and check that and see how that fits?’” Andrade said.
Customers can create their own pottery pieces, such as cups, bowls or plates, using modeling tables and pottery wheels, Andrade said. The company offers two kilns to finish projects, including adding a glaze on a person’s art piece. If a person isn’t interested in molding their own work, they can paint preproduced pieces, such as animals, bowls and plates.
Andrade traces her love of art to her childhood. Growing up in Brazil, she’d create cards for friends’ birthdays and other special occasions. They weren’t your typical greeting cards.
“I would do three-dimensional drawings. I remember this one time, it was a 3D bread toaster where the bread was the card,” Andrade said. “I love doing that, but I actually didn’t consider myself an artist. I was just doing and creating things.”
Back to school
An architect by training, Andrade enjoyed working on art projects during her private time, she said. Her love for art led her back to school.
“I thought when I’m older, I was going to study art,” she said. “At some point, I realized that I didn’t have to get older, I could do this while I was still working, so I went back to university. I was fascinated about it. I could transform myself into an artist and just see the joy that that dance can bring.”
Her husband, Juliano, is an executive with a railroad company, and his work took the family to South Africa, where she opened a small art studio. After returning to Brazil, she stayed home to raise their young children.
Moving to the United States two years ago for Juliano’s work with Wabtec, Andrade spent a year teaching art at Trinity Classical Academy in Waterloo.
“As a classical school, it was like Greek art and Egyptian art,” she said. “It was a challenge, because it took me out of my comfort zone. I love researching, so it was great.”
Her own studio
While she enjoyed teaching, Andrade said she still desired her own studio. When she walked into the building at 1410 Howard St., Andrade said she knew it was the perfect space to help others create art.
True Pottery has hosted date nights and other special events, she said. Guests can bring their own drinks, including wine, Andrade said.
“We did a special bachelorette party where they made a keepsake for the moment,” she said. “They made a pottery set for the bride. Each of them made a plate … then the full set went to the bride as a gift.”
Andrade’s advice for other entrepreneurs is to not worry about perfection and to not try to control everything.
“For many years in Brazil, I would always step back and say, ‘No, I’m not ready,’ or ‘There’s so many things to do or so many things to plan and have it structured before really going and doing,’” Andrade said. “I feel that it’s not really necessary. If you are into it — if it’s your attention, your love, your passion — you can bring all of these together one step at a time; it’s fine.”

Leading the Way
KIM WHITTAKER, FNTS, BROKE NEW GROUND FOR
With a career resume like Kim Whittaker’s, one could easily refer to her as a pioneering woman in Omaha’s information technology field. Whittaker joined First National Technology Solutions 18 months into the now-30year-old company’s existence in 1997 and has been there ever since, serving as its president since 2017.
During that time FNTS, a wholly owned subsidiary of bank holding company First National of Nebraska, which also owns First National Bank of Omaha, has grown into a national player in areas such as hybrid IT, managed services, cybersecurity and cloud optimization, much of it under Whittaker’s leadership. All of this growth took place during a period when women were greatly outnumbered by men in technical fields, especially in leadership roles.
Whittaker doesn’t exactly see herself in the same light as other groundbreaking women in IT from her era, however, quickly pointing out she didn’t come up on the technical side but served in finance and sales roles prior to becoming president. However, she does remember many times being the only woman in the room, especially on the sales side.
WOMEN IN
TECH COMPANIES
“My background is really a business background,” she said. “I worked for Principal Financial Group for a few years before joining First National Bank of Omaha. I started in what was called the Management Trainee Program and coming out of that, there was an opportunity within FNTS in a finance role. It was a very small, startup company and I started to lend some help on the marketing side because I had a dual degree in marketing and finance, and then eventually shifted over into sales.
“When I first got started, especially when I was in the sales role and meeting with potential clients or existing clients, it was very common for me to be the only female in the room. It was very, very unique to have a female CIO or CTO or vice president of IT at that time. I have seen, over the years, a tremendous shift in that; we’re not at 50-50 yet but meeting with prospective clients or new clients, we see a lot more females in technical roles as well as in leadership roles. I’m encouraged with the progress that has been made.”
The company got started as a solutions provider for financial institution clients and is still considered an expert in that market segment. In time, the focus

- KIM WHITTAKER
broadened to other sectors, but financial institutions still account for close to 50% of company revenue. That, in turn, has made FNTS a recognized IT leader serving clients from coast to coast, especially those clients operating in a complicated regulatory environment.
“Banking, insurance, et cetera is definitely still our largest share from an industry perspective but we support clients across all industries now,” she said. “We have state and local government, we have clients that are manufacturers, retailers, health care and health insurance clients, education.
“Our heritage with First National Bank of Omaha and in the financial services sector is one of our differentiators. We do understand regulatory compliance requirements, obviously, and so we’ve always had a very strong security posture. Even though a client might not be in financial services, they might have HIPAA or other government regulatory requirements and we can typically help those clients meet those requirements even in non-financial industries, just because of the breadth and depth of our security practice.”
Whittaker said the pace of change over the past three decades has been dizzying, especially when one pauses to take stock of what passed for state of the art when she started with the company compared to what it is today.
“In the mid-1990s, it seems crazy now, but a lot of companies were just deploying email systems and exchange servers. Some of them didn’t have any wide area networks to connect their branch offices. Those were a lot of the projects that we did,” she said. “We also were doing a lot of projects migrating clients off of the Novell operating system to Windows because Windows was really just taking off at that point.
“I think one of the reasons why we’ve been successful is we really have always been focused on building long-term relationships with our clients and really developing that partnership and wanting them to truly view us as a trusted adviser. Because we built strong relationships with them to understand where they had challenges and where they were trying to go from a business and from an IT perspective, we were able to then build out capabilities that would enable those clients to achieve their objectives.”
Achieving that took a lot of continuing education and forward-looking strategy, Whittaker said, both at the corporate level and among FNTS’ employees, which now number about 125 workers
“That definitely has been something over these past eight years that I’d say has become part of our culture, always looking at how we can constantly improve, how we can continuously evolve the solutions that we’re providing to the client to ensure we are continuing to add value in that relationship,” she said.
“We proactively evolve our capabilities and our solutions based on what we are seeing with the trends of technology, staying current, going to conferences and staying connected to our different vendors. It’s imperative that our team is always researching and staying close to what is coming next.”
One part of what’s “next” Whittaker hopes, is a continued broadening of the IT industry to include more women at all levels.
“I joined FNTS because I was just really intrigued with technology just as it was kind of starting to take hold,” she said. “Today, I’m passionate about encouraging more young girls and more college women to go into technology to pursue their careers. (The industry) has changed drastically and I hope that it will continue to. There’s still a lot of work to be done.”

At the Omaha Community Foundation, our mission is to connect people who care with causes that matter. It’s an effort grounded in trust, strategy and expert guidance. We ensure our team is equipped to serve donors at the highest level through the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® (CAP®) program.
OCF is proud to have several staff members who hold this nationally recognized credential, including President and CEO Donna Kush, Vice President of Donor & Philanthropic Services Vanessa Denney, Director of Philanthropic Services Tessa Barney, and Director of Community Investment Anne Meysenburg. Their collective expertise allows us to approach charitable giving with a 360-degree view, understanding the needs of donors, advisors and nonprofits alike.
The CAP® program is a rigorous, graduate-level credential offered through The American College of Financial Services. The coursework spans nearly a year and includes three intensive courses: Planning for Philanthropic Impact in the Context of Family Wealth, Charitable Giving Strategies, and Gift Planning in a Nonprofit Context.
The program’s curriculum integrates law, accounting, financial services and nonprofit planned giving to promote a truly interdisciplinary approach to legacy planning. Through this lens, advisors learn how to help clients define their values, set philanthropic goals, and create giving strategies that make long-term impact, both for their families and their communities.
“This all started with a challenge: Warren Buffett encouraging us to make Omaha the most charitable city in America,” said Mark Weber, co-founder of the
Raising the Bar
Omaha Community Foundation’s CAP® Study Group. “That stuck with me. I realized the only way to truly shift our culture of giving was through the people who are already trusted advisors. If we could engage them in thoughtful, valuesbased conversations about philanthropy, we could spark real, widespread change. That’s how the CAP® Study Group began — just an idea, a small group of professionals learning together. Thirteen years later, these advisors are influencing giving across the city in powerful ways.”
For Denney, earning her CAP® designation provided a broader perspective to her work. “It encourages conversation and assessment of charitable giving goals, which has a ripple effect in the community,” she said. “Those conversations allow me to be a better philanthropic partner to our donors, so I know which tools and resources to recommend based on their giving goals.”
That level of understanding matters, especially for donors navigating complex assets, family dynamics or legacy planning. Whether someone is establishing a donor-advised fund, planning a significant gift, or involving their children in giving decisions, having a CAP®-certified team ensures they have access to the best possible resources and insight.
“Our team’s CAP® designations reflect our deep commitment to serving our community with integrity and thoughtfulness,” Kush said. “This expertise helps us empower donors to give with confidence and with purpose.”
Don’t Let the Noise Distract from the Destination
We often say that much of what happens in the stock market is not for you, the long-term investor. This arena is filled with all different types of players with varying styles and time horizons, which fuels much of the day-to-day moves in stock prices. Long-term investors need to remember this because it helps us separate the signal from the noise. We need to be humble and understand that we’re not in the game of winning every week, month, quarter or even year. Our measure of success spans multiple years — if not decades. We must not confuse our goals with those of the talking heads of financial media which typically have much shorter time horizons. We’re not traders — we’re investors.
The prevailing news of the past week or so is the outperformance of small cap and international stocks relative to what has been working, which are technology shares and AI-related beneficiaries that are prevalent in the S&P 500, the NASDAQ 100, and ultimately the “Magnificent 7.” After hitting all-time highs just over a week ago, many of these names have pulled back modestly. At the same time, more interest-rate sensitive areas like small caps (Russell 2000) and international stocks (MSCI ACWI ex-US) have gotten a bid.
The thesis is that a resumption in interest rate cuts from the Fed will loosen the noose that’s been choking the more cyclical parts of the market. Since these have lagged for so long, there is a belief that this bull market will eventually broaden and other asset classes will catch up to the AI winners that have dominated market returns for so long. Color us skeptical; we think such secular changes are not temporary but structural. They can and will take pauses but they’re not going away.
A pause in the rally of AI-related names is welcome and healthy. It’s not the first time, either. There have been several periods since this bull market began in October 2022 that AI-related stocks have taken a back seat to more cyclical firms. The last thing we wish to see is an unobstructed rally that sends these stocks into the stratosphere which would shorten this bull market and possibly fuel a boom-to-bust cycle with misallocated capital. The problem with bubbles
is that if everyone is on the lookout for them, such caution tends to guard against one forming. We remember similar concerns in the housing market shortly after the global financial crisis. Instead, what proved to be in a bubble were commodity stocks after China’s spending spree began to slow. Low valuations offered little downside protection.
More importantly, historically, we’ve observed that “rotations” into ratesensitive stocks have often been temporary. It’s like Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown, leaving him flat on his back with a pronounced “AAUGH!” We have our doubts that a mere 0.25% to 0.50% reduction in shortterm interest rates will rescue these firms from the technological disruption that threatens the longevity and existence of many legacy business models. We believe that those who are so desperate to return to the past will be disappointed once again.

DR. ANDREIA NEBEL MIDLANDS BUSINESS
Bio:
Dr. Andreia Nebel is president of Clarkson College, the latest roles in a 22-year tenure with the college. The Wyoming native holds the titles Doctor in Education in Interdisciplinary Leadership; Physical Therapist; Doctor of Physical Therapy and Fellow National Academies of Practice. Among her community service roles is serving on the executive committee for Omaha STEM Ecosystem, a body she chaired in 2022.
What is something a mentor told you that has been essential to your career and why?
I lead and live with two sayings always in mind: “People commit to what they help create,” and “Actions always speak louder than words.” These two statements have been essential to my career because in any role, one cannot do the work alone and the work done always speaks for itself.
What led you to your particular field?
I grew up in a family where giving back was important, whether that was helping a friend or stranger, so I always knew I wanted to do something where I could be helpful. I changed my major multiple times and was fortunate to have a college advisor who recommended that I go to physical therapy school. That choice changed my life as it led me to a career in pediatrics and geriatrics and ultimately teaching.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love serving others through teaching and community service work and I enjoy seeing the result of students working hard to meet their end goal to become a health care professional. I also often say, “My kids grew up at Clarkson College.” I have worked with or have known many of my colleagues for over 20 years and my son (21) and my daughter (20) have both participated, along with my husband, in multiple family and community events in support of Clarkson College and our community.
Why is being involved in the Omaha STEM Ecosystem important to you and/or Clarkson College?
The Omaha STEM Ecosystem has been important to Clarkson College because it has helped us connect health care professions and the importance of a STEM education to multiple business and school system events, advisory committees and
specific student programming. Personally, I have been able to expand my professional network and now have colleagues across the Omaha metro area that I continue to collaborate with both for the OSE and for additional community support initiatives. Julie Sigmon, the previous director, and all the OSE staff have been invaluable in connecting education with business to support student interest in and awareness of STEM careers.
What are your goals and challenges as president and CEO?
Our goal is to continue to stay student-, employee-, community-, service- and mission-

This status comes from participating in the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA or the Big “I”) Best Practices Study Group.
The Best Practices Study analyzes and documents the business practices of the highest-performing insurance agencies in the industry. This year 1,146 independent agencies throughout the U.S. were nominated for this selection process and only 348 agencies scored high enough to qualify.
“UNICO’s inclusion among the industry’s highest performers reflects our commitment to always improving how we serve our clients,” said Shane Ideus, UNICO president. “Earning this recognition for 16 straight years reflects our team’s dedication to quality service.”
Since 1993, the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America and Reagan Consulting, an Atlantabased management consulting firm, have joined forces to study the country’s leading agencies in seven revenue categories.
Founded in 1896, the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America is the nation’s oldest and largest national association of independent insurance agents and brokers, representing over 25,000 agency locations united under the Trusted Choice brand. Trusted Choice independent agents offer consumers all types of insurance — property, casualty, life, health, employee benefit plans and retirement products — from various insurance companies.
