First Row Fitness’s business name has a double meaning, owner Carrie McDonald said.
“When you’re in the first row, you have the best view, the best seats in the house, and then also we were the first rowing studio in the OmahaCouncil Bluffs metro area,” McDonald explained.
First Row Fitness aims to make exercise fun and accessible in a nonintimidating environment, especially for older adults and clients new to working out, McDonald said. The business offers personal training and lifestyle coaching in addition to a cohort of 30- to 45-minute group fitness classes that include rowing, yoga and Pilates. Certified personal
trainers lead the fitness classes and yoga classes are led by experienced registered yoga teachers.
McDonald’s own broad fitness experience includes work in physiotherapy, as a chiropractic assistant, in various roles for the Council Bluffs YMCA and teaching classes at Iowa Western Community College. She’s also worked at a senior center, contracting for a company called Fitness City that specialized in corporate fitness, and provided personal training sessions to private clients.
She was already in her 40s when she first conceived of opening her own fitness business.

Event: “Drowned Land” film premier

Where: Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts
Why: To raise awareness of environmental issues
Mission: Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts facilitates the creation, presentation and understanding of contemporary art through an international residency program, exhibitions and educational programs.
About the event: Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts was the setting for this film premiere, which was held as part of the exhibition “From the Great Lakes to the Great Plains: The Visible Currents of Climate Change.” The exhibit examines the interrelationship between past, present and future landscapes of the Great Lakes and Great Plains regions, highlighting how water remains at the core of all climate change conversations.
“Drowned Land,” focuses on the Kiamichi River in Oklahoma, which is caught in a battle between corporations wanting to commodify the water and community members who want to rectify the cycle of land theft that began with the Trail of Tears. The screening included a conversation afterward with Platte Basin Timelapse cofounder Michael Farrell and filmmaker Colleen Thurston.
An elected official from northeast Nebraska has been called out by the state auditor for allegedly using Menards store rebates earned through county purchases for his own benefit.
The questionable buys include a $1 prank whoopee cushion, toothpaste, and a $94 load of lumber.
An eight-page report issued Tuesday by Nebraska State Auditor Mike Foley addressed to the Wayne County Board of Commissioners, noted the auditor’s office had fielded concerns that Commissioner Dean Burbach had redeemed Menards rebates accumulated with county funds.
Wayne County maintains a charge account with Menards to buy general supplies and other items, and the store frequently offers 11% rebates on purchases. Information on the rebate is included on the original transaction receipt, and to redeem it, someone fills out a form and mails it along with the rebate section of the original transaction receipt to Menards. The auditing team found that rebates totalling about $600 were earned from purchases made on the county’s charge account and later were redeemed under Burbach’s name and home address.
Peru State College will host its second-ever Giving Week beginning Sept. 1, celebrating the Nebraska institution’s 158-year legacy as the state’s first postsecondary educational institution. The weeklong fundraising campaign replaces the college’s previous 24-hour October giving day format.
Peru State College Foundation aims to raise $100,000 through donations supporting scholarships, academic programs, athletics and campus improvements. Officials announced a donor has pledged a $25,000 matching gift, with an additional $10,000 bonus if the campaign reaches its overall goal.
The Foundation has organized 16 different challenges and matches targeting specific programs including theatre, cross country, business, education and football. Donors can support designated areas or contribute to the Blue and White Fund, which maintains campus culture.
The Nebraska Department of Economic Development announced more than $4.4 million in federal funding for affordable housing development through two key programs.
The HOME Investment Partnerships Fund awarded $3.7 million to five rental projects totaling 157 units. Recipients include senior housing in Bellevue receiving $900,000 for 38 units; two Beatrice developments, Stoddard Place II and Beatrice Commons awarded $750,000 each; and duplex-style projects in West Point and Columbus, which each received $650,000.
The National Housing Trust Fund provided $719,438 to Douglas Senior Housing in Omaha, a $12.1 million project featuring 45 two-bedroom units for seniors 55 and older.
All HOME-assisted units serve households earning 60% or less of area median income, while HTF units target those at 30% AMI or below.
Omaha city council members got some bad news at its Aug. 12 meeting concerning the $54 million renovation of Tranquility Park. The project, which is supposed to transform the 50-year-old park into a showpiece sports complex, was reported to be behind schedule and over budget.
Originally to feature upgraded facilities and converting 16 grass fields to synthetic surface, Omaha Parks Department officials announced the project was still in the preliminary design phase. Also recommended was reducing the number of fields to 12 as a cost-savings move.
Construction is expected to commence at the 340-acre park starting in November.

Werner Enterprises won two 2025 Quest for Quality Awards from Logistics Management magazine in the Truckload: Dry Freight Carriers and Third-Party Logistics: Transportation Management categories.
The awards represent leading benchmarks for customer satisfaction in transportation and logistics. Winners are chosen via a six-month research process involving more than 3,000 decision-makers.
Truckload carriers are evaluated on on-time performance, value, information technology, customer service and equipment/operations. Third-party logistics providers are rated on carrier selection/negotiation, order fulfillment, transportation distribution, inventory management and logistics information systems.

Slated for South Adams Street, the center will house the district’s Community Closet, training and event space and the foundation’s Kids Club afterschool program which serves about 1,300 students during the school year and approximately 800 students during the summer.
Foundation officials said about half of the $10 million in funding has been committed. Construction of the center is expected to commence next fall with a 2028 anticipated completion date.
Neighborhood officials and dignitaries gathered in north Omaha on Aug. 16 for an announcement about new development coming to the neighborhood. The Mensch Group plans to build seven family-sized townhomes, a mixed-use space for new restaurants and a bank.
Company founder Phillip McClain said plans are for the mixed used space to be finished by mid-2026 and the townhomes to be complete by late summer next year.
“(Residents) want activation, they want to be able to have a live/work area where they can go to restaurants, shops,” McClain told WOWT. “They want all the necessities that you can get in all the other neighborhoods in Omaha. They feel like, hey, we deserve them.”
The Community Foundation for Western Iowa, through its Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa, is leading the conversation on women’s issues in the area by hosting the third IMPACT for Women Summit. The foundation’s biennial signature event will be held Sept. 25 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs.
The IMPACT for Women Summit will include dynamic conversations from subject matter experts in the Fund’s four focus areas, all geared toward sharing knowledge and building community resources and solutions that support women across a nine-county region. The keynote speaker this year is Academy, Oscar, and Golden Globe awardwinning actress and published author, Marlee Matlin.
The Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa has received tremendous sponsorship support from business leaders and individuals in the community thus far to make this year’s IMPACT for Women Summit a reality. Extended appreciation goes to Premier Presenting Sponsors The Rod Rhoden Foundation, Acura of Omaha and Superior Honda of Omaha for their generosity, enthusiasm and strong commitment in support of the event at the top sponsorship level.
Tickets are available for $89 and sponsorships start at $1,250. Contact 712-256-7007 ext. 12 or visit www.givewesterniowa.org for details.

Grants to these organizations will support programming and projects that are focused on improving the quality of life and well-being of women and children in its service area.
“The Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa continues to create impact that will benefit the lives of women in our region for generations to come,” said Donna Dostal, president and CEO of the Community Foundation for Western Iowa. “These opportunities for impact are only possible because of the generosity of our community members. We know from experience that when we invest in women and their families, our communities thrive. We are truly honored to support and facilitate this important work.”
The Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa was created to bring awareness and active solutions to the forefront of conversations happening in western Iowa communities, schools and workplaces. It is designed to address and support four key focus issues facing women and their families: access to affordable, quality child care; aging in place and in community; education for women of all ages; and women’s safety and wellbeing focusing on human trafficking, domestic violence and overall wellness.

TS Bank gifted $5,000 to the Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa, a catalyst for lasting, positive change addressing the challenges facing women and families across the region.
Established in 2018, the Community Foundation for Western Iowa Women’s Fund serves nine counties — Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie and Shelby — and has granted more than $475,000 to date. The fund supports programming focused on women’s health, safety, education, workforce equity and well-being, with increased emphasis on STEM education, personal finance, leadership and access to child care and transportation.
“This generous gift from TS Bank helps us continue building solutions that meet the real needs of women in nine counties throughout southwest Iowa,” said Donna Dostal, president and CEO at the Community Foundation for Western Iowa. “We are grateful for
their partnership and shared commitment to uplift women and families across the region.”
The fund is designed to improve the quality of life for women and their families through strategic planning and a collaborative needs assessment. Programs also support aging women with access to health care, healthy foods and volunteer services.
“As a community, we have the opportunity to come together and create tangible solutions,” said Kelsey Stupfell, director of public relations at TS Bank. “We’re proud to support this mission and continue our commitment to helping families in southwest Iowa for generations to come.”
The Women’s Fund will host its annual Impact for Women Summit on Sept. 25, featuring keynote speaker Marlee Matlin, Academy Award-winning actress and author. Tickets are available at givewesterniowa.com

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recently opened nominations for the 2026 National Small Business Week Awards. National Small Business Week recognizes the contributions of America’s 36 million small businesses which make up 99% of all businesses in America, create two out of every three new jobs, and employ about half of America’s workforce. National Small Business Week will take place May 3-9, 2026.
“During National Small Business Week, we honor America’s job creators and the vital role they play in making our country the greatest in the world,” SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said. “From farms to factories, hardworking small businesses are the engine of our economy, the heartbeat of local communities, and the foundation of our nation’s strength. Thanks to our free enterprise system, small businesses power generational opportunity and economic growth. With the America First agenda, they are a key part of a historic comeback that is renewing the promise of the American Dream.”
Brad Zaun, SBA Great Plains Regional Administrator, highlighted the importance of regional nominations. “The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well here in the Great Plains, and these awards are the perfect opportunity to shine a national spotlight on the incredible businesses in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. We have some of the most innovative and resilient business owners in the country, and I want to see their stories told,” Zahn said.
Those interested in nominating a small business in Nebraska can do so, as well as download related forms, criteria and guidelines, by visiting sba.gov/nsbw. TALIA MCGILL
A native of Omaha, Talia McGill is the president and CEO of No More Empty Pots, an organization she joined eight years ago as its director of strategic communications. She was subsequently promoted to chief operating officer in November 2019 and to her current role in January 2024.
McGill holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska Omaha and a master’s in marketing from Bellevue University.
What led you to your particular field?
I got into business and marketing because of my very first job selling toys at KB Toy Store when I was in high school. It was there that I learned I enjoyed problem solving around finding out what people need and getting a product in their hands that solved that problem. Fast forward to today, I use this skill set to help individuals and families in our community access food, a fundamental human need yet a challenge that remains deeply complex.
What are the primary goals or mission of your organization and how do you go about fulfilling them?
No More Empty Pots is a nonprofit organization founded in 2010 in north Omaha. Our programs are rooted in food and focus on education, workforce training, nutrition, food justice and business development. Our goal is to drive sustainable change by equipping individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive within their local food systems.
What are the biggest challenges you face in your work, day in and day out?
The biggest challenge in my day-to-day work is trying to create long term systemic solutions to problems that have very real-time consequences. We’re taking a different approach in not only looking at making sure individuals and families have enough to eat today but have the means and choice to access what they want, how they want, day after day. This requires change at a lot of levels
What led the group to launch a coffee shop and how will this help you advance your mission?
Cups Café is part of the original vision of our Food Hub building in north Omaha that officially opened in 2019. However, the pandemic got in the way of fully opening a coffee shop onsite. This year, we reopened the café as part of our growing efforts to increase
engagement with the community.
The café supports our mission as we source coffee and food made with ingredients from local food entrepreneurs and producers, creating a communitycentered experience that’s hyper-focused on supporting local business owners in our food system.
All of us at No More Empty Pots are thrilled to see Cups Café gaining momentum this year. Launching a lunch menu this summer has been an exciting step forward, and we’re eager to continue growing and serving more people.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Teamwork. As a lifelong athlete, trainer and coach, I am passionate about any environment where I get
