The first phase, which will include 99 housing units, is slated to begin later this year and be completed in late 2026. This will include one-, two- and three-bedroom units. In total, the project will have two or three phases, resulting in a total of 286 units including market-rate rental apartments and townhomes, and over 550 parking spaces. The entire project is slated to be completed by 2027.
Nebraska ranks high for newly retired women
Nebraska is the No. 1 state in the nation for newly retired women, according to Travel + Leisure. A study by Manhattan Mental Health Counseling ranked all 50 states on factors including cost of living, health care, life expectancy, crime and climate. Nebraska topped the list thanks to an affordable cost of living index, a strong health care system, and numerous community centers per capita. The report also noted Nebraska’s average temperature makes it an ideal spot for outdoor enthusiasts, as well as being first in the nation in parks per capita.
Homeownership cost numbers improve
RealtyHop released the May Housing Affordability Index to determine if homeownership is affordable or even possible for the average American family using the 30-year-fixed mortgage rate of 6.78%. Out of the 100 cities examined, 90 out of 100 rated less affordable month over month. Omaha’s ranking improved slightly, as home ownership costs changed 2.53%, ranking the city 78th out of 100 listed, down from 76th last month.
Breakdown by numbers for Omaha homebuyers:
Median household income = $76,088
Median list price = $300,000, up 1.69% MOM
Monthly estimated mortgage + taxes = $1,964.81
Share of income for home ownership = 30.99% up 2.53% MOM

Transforming Workplace Well-being
THE WELLBEING PARTNERS SHIFTS THE CORPORATE WELLNESS PARADIGM
No safe workplace, regardless of size or industry, would be complete without supplies like a first-aid kit. The Wellbeing Partners is equipping leadership and employees from across Douglas, Sarpy, Cass and Pottawattamie counties with mental health first-aid “kits,” in the form of the skills needed to proactively recognize and respond to mental health challenges in their respective workforces.
Such first-aid training is representative of the nonprofit’s approach to acknowledge mental health and actively support it within the broader workplace culture.
“Through this training, participants gain the skills and confidence to recognize the signs of mental health challenges, offer initial support and guide individuals to appropriate resources,” said Lori Thomas, director of strategy and operations/Mental Health First Aid instructor. “This collaborative approach has helped reduce stigma, improved early intervention and created more compassionate, resilient workplace environments.”
While these tools are a particular point of pride, The Wellbeing Partners offers many other services and opportunities to build well-being into how Midlands communities and workplaces grow. A sample of these services includes: custom consultation and facilitation; presentations and workshops; educational events and webinars; collaboration with coalitions/leaders to drive community health initiatives; and advocacy for inclusive, evidence-based policies to break down health barriers.
“The word ‘partner’ is fundamental to who we are,” Thomas said. “It means working together with employers, public health leaders and community members in shared action to advance equity, connection and resilience.”
“Whether it’s through supporting mental health in the workplace, promoting physical and emotional well-being or addressing systemic barriers to health, we bring people together for a common purpose — to ensure everyone thrives where they live, work and play.”
Leading real change
In the past year alone, the five-year-old organization has joined forces with 49 member organizations, in addition to other community organizations and school systems.
“We directly engaged 2,100 individuals through our training, educational workshops, presentations and mental health initiatives during that time,” Thomas said.
With a primary service area of about 898,000 people, Thomas noted that its work with memberorganizations extends The Wellbeing Partners’ influence even further to impact cultures, family systems and broader community outcomes. Its work has arguably never been more important.
“Today’s workforce is under immense pressure to perform, stay resilient and maintain productivity, often within systems that don’t support the full scope of their human needs and experiences,” Thomas said. “Many employees navigate unrealistic work expectations, tight deadlines and an ‘always-on’ culture that leaves little room for personal well-being.”
She also noted that, despite increased awareness, stigma around mental health still prevents many employees from seeking support or speaking openly out of the fear of judgement or career repercussions.
“The absence of psychological safety in many workplaces means employees don’t feel safe being vulnerable, asking for help or making mistakes, conditions that allow stress and burnout to escalate unchecked,” Thomas said.
Best practices
The Wellbeing Partners emphasizes equipping managers with the training and tools to recognize when someone is struggling and to model healthy behaviors.
“Without visible support from the top, employees are unlikely to adopt or trust well-being practices,” she said.

Traditional corporate wellness challenges often miss the mark. When these initiatives are primarily incentive-driven or treated as side perks, employees quickly recognize them as surface-level efforts.
- LORI THOMAS, DIRECTOR OF STRATEGY AND OPERATIONS, THE WELLBEING PARTNERS
Thomas also noted how well-being should not be an afterthought or side budget item; it must be a strategic priority embedded into the very fabric of psychologically safe workplace cultures.
“Traditional corporate wellness challenges often miss the mark,” she said. “When these initiatives are primarily incentive-driven or treated as side perks, employees quickly recognize them as surface-level efforts.”
More over, participation may earn rewards but it rarely leads to meaningful improvements in well-being or productivity, she said.
“Historically, workplace well-being has often been seen as a peripheral concern, something nice to have, but not essential to business success,” Thomas said. “At The Wellbeing Partners, we are committed to shifting this mindset by positioning well-being as a strategic priority and a leadership imperative, not just an HR initiative.”
She said the real impact comes from building workplace cultures where people are allowed and encouraged to be “fully human.”
“When employees feel safe, supported and valued, they become more engaged, resilient and loyal,” Thomas said. “When people thrive, so does the organization.”
The Wellbeing Partners also frames employee well-being as not only a “moral imperative,” but also as a strategic advantage. As a business asset, Thomas said they present wellness as a driver of measurable business outcomes, from increased productivity and reduced turnover and absenteeism to a stronger employee brand and improved team performance.
“We support leadership with consultation to align wellness strategies with organizational goals and [to] help them develop a fully integrated solution, rather than a one-off wellness program,” she said.
Solutions, such as assessment tools, are flexible. Organizations may benefit from a memberexclusive resource while those who desire a more custom fit can have resources tailored to their culture, goals and workforce needs. They may also benefit from The Wellbeing Partners’ crosssector collaboration with business, health care, education, nonprofit and government sectors.
“For executives, this comprehensive support means access to a broader network of insights and solutions that go beyond traditional workplace wellness,” Thomas said.
Leadership also keeps a finger on the pulse of national workplace well-being trends and engagement with experts across the country, allowing them to bring the most effective, evidence-based practices to the region.
A bright vision
Similarly, CEO Aja Anderson envisions a collaborative ecosystem, one where employers, community organizations and public health partners band together to create a culture of health and belonging.
“Well-being is a shared responsibility that goes beyond individual workplaces,” Anderson said. “Employers will implement and share best practices that prioritize well-being; community partners will connect businesses with relevant and accessible resources; (and) employees will access and navigate wellness resources without issues or delays.”
She also envisions data-sharing across sectors and the prioritization of health equity for the betterment of the community.
Over the nearer term, Anderson said the organization’s 2025 Strategic Plan focuses on
expanding education and connection around wellness in the communities that The Wellbeing Partners serves.
“We aim to bring more people together — especially employers, community leaders and wellness advocates — to increase awareness and shared learning,” she said. “We are actively building collaboration with business networks, health care organizations, providers and state entities to align efforts, promote equitable practices and amplify collective impact.”
Anderson also said The Wellbeing Partners is committed to ensuring marginalized groups have active participation and leadership opportunities within all aspects of its work.
“Centering these voices in program development and decision-making is essential to creating meaningful and inclusive change,” she said. “Looking ahead, our longer-term goals focus on creating and sustaining programs across all dimensions of wellness that intentionally address and reduce disparities in health and well-being.”
Anderson emphasized the group’s commitment to creating structural change, embedding equity into the foundation of workplace and community well-being strategies.
“Through continued collaboration, we seek to build a resilient, interconnected support system where every individual — regardless of employer, background or identity — has the opportunity to thrive,” she said.

Event to Highlight Housing, Development Issues
REIGNITE2UNITE SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 4 AND 5
Reignite2Unite Omaha Development Symposium, presented by the Omaha Municipal Land Bank, Spark and Front Porch Investments, will present a slate of topics addressing land activation, affordable housing and economic development.
The second annual symposium is slated for June 4 and 5 at the Omaha Marriott Downtown in the Capitol District, 222 N. 10th St.
The land bank, a quasi-public 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, was established in 2014 as a means to address vacant, abandoned and tax-delinquent properties in Omaha. The bank grew out of the Nebraska Municipal Land Bank Act, which was passed by the Unicameral the year prior. Under its structure, OMLB acquires said properties and then works with developers to return them to productive use, enriching neighborhoods and bolstering the tax rolls. At present the bank has just under 300 properties available for sale.
The symposium helps execute the mission of the bank by educating the public on matters pertaining to the cause of reinvigorating derelict properties as well as providing a blueprint for change and a networking opportunity whereby developers can connect with various resources.
“The Reignite2Unite event exists to create that landing place for community resources to convene and connect in hopes to grow a more robust pool of developers, ultimately,” said Leslie
Smith, OMLB executive director. “We’re looking for anyone who’s interested in becoming a developer, becoming acquainted with the resources or topics that you would need if you wanted to start a development.
“We’re looking to raise awareness and promote how we can grow our list of new and emerging developers and anybody who intersects with the industry, who can create new policies or create more connections.”
Expanding upon the success of the inaugural 2024 event, Reignite2Unite will offer sessions on housing development, access to capital, policy advocacy and innovative solutions. Speakers will also highlight growth in neighboring Council Bluffs.
“Because we are currently supporting the developments that take place through selling our properties, we are very dependent on the developers to really have the capacity and ability to develop the properties as they were approved to do so by our board of directors,” Smith said. “Unfortunately, many of the buyers are new and emerging developers with limiting access to capital being one of their top issues.
“Omaha is starting to have a lot of resources mobilized to create a robust pool of small-scale developers. We’re on the front end of that effort.”
The Reignite2Unite event exists to create that landing place for community resources to convene and connect in hopes to grow a more robust pool of developers.
- LESLIE SMITH, OMLB EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Wells Fargo Senior Vice President Cristina Castro-Matukewicz said the land bank and its programming play a critical role not only in resuscitating properties in neighborhoods across the city, but also in addressing Omaha’s critical shortage of affordable housing.
“We supported this event last year in the inaugural year and decided to come back even stronger this year,” she said. “The main reason is because housing affordability is one of our main pillars for our business. We believe that everyone should have access to a quality, affordable place to live and that shows in the work we do to keep people housed by funding innovative alternatives.
“We see (the land bank) as an innovative opportunity to make sure that home ownership continues to be a source of wealth for people.”
Castro-Matukewicz said the work OMLB opens up opportunities for other stakeholders to lend their resources and expertise to help address the housing shortage and promote home ownership.
“People who are new to home ownership face different challenges and sometimes even higher hurdles than people who have been homeowners for generations,” she said. “One of the main obstacles is access to capital. It’s very hard for people to come up with the money to put a down payment that will make that home more affordable. One thing that we do specifically in Omaha, is offer down payment assistance to clients who meet certain criteria.
“The other obstacle is just the cost of the housing. It was reported on the news recently that Omaha is one of the hottest markets for housing in the country. That’s good; but it’s also challenging for new homeowners and for people who have never been homeowners, because what that means is that housing affordability in Omaha is changing. We always have been known for being one of the most affordable places to live and that’s changing in front of us.”
Reignite2Unite will also feature three keynote speakers, the first being Leah Rothstein, a housing policy expert and author whose father, Richard Rothstein, wrote “The Color of Law,” an explosive history of how the U.S. government deliberately imposed residential racial segregation on metropolitan areas nationwide. She collaborated with her father on a follow-up, “Just Action: How to Challenge Segregation Enacted under the Color of Law,” which identifies and analyzes policies and programs that local governments and institutions can take to redress racial segregation.
The keynote for the symposium’s second day will be Anthony and Anton Downing, twin brothers and firefighters turned real estate investors and reality TV stars. The Downing brothers star on “Backyard Bar Wars” and “Double Down” on HGTV, and are passionate about providing education surrounding financial literacy and real estate investment through their “Homecoming with the Downing Brothers” podcast, national college tour, community partnerships and brand collaborations.

BAT Logistics
Charting a Bold Path Forward
BAT LOGISTICS THRIVES ON CULTURE, CARE AND CONNECTION
Doing things right and focusing on the customer has carried BAT Logistics to 17 successful years and is a big part of the company’s success. That’s the belief of Ashley Jankowski, chief executive officer, who co-owns the company with Shawn Rorie. Rorie and Jarrod Marinello created Backhaul and Track Logistics following several years of experience with a trucking brokerage company and railroad companies, Jankowski said. BAT Logistics is a brokerage firm that connects customers with trucking companies, creating partnerships that help them get products delivered across North America.
Creating positive culture
BAT’s founders believed they could provide better service and create a culture that would invite customers — producers and trucking companies — to want to work with them.
“Our customers stay with us because they can see our culture,” Jankowski said. “They know who we are. They know we’re going to be honest. They know they’re going to have fun working with us. We’re going to care about them as people but we’re going to care about their business, too. We want everybody to be successful.”
After serving as the lone owners for a decade, Rorie and Marinello agreed they didn’t want the business to stagnate, so, in 2018, they offered ownership opportunities to Jankowski and Ralph Blank, who serves as vice president of operations. They later vested three other employees with ownership options.
“We were able to double our business within the next 18 months,” she said. “From there, it’s been riding the roller coaster of what is our culture, and even when you throw a pandemic in the middle of

that, we continue to live that foundational piece. We’ve never had a layoff, even in the middle of the pandemic. We have never cut team salaries. We have continued to live in the space of taking care of people and providing opportunities, and so that time was definitely pivotal for the expansion of the business.”
Customer, community service vital
Sadly, Rorie, 57, died in December 2024 following a short illness but his vision of the company remains key to its core values, Jankowski said. One example of this is how BAT Logistics’ leadership has focused on growing the company through outstanding customer service along with supporting the community.
“One of our core values is to breathe care and by breathing care, that means not only for our team, our customers and our carriers, but it’s to be able to give back. That, for us, in the community has been huge,” she said.
“We’ve supported our team if they’ve wanted to volunteer for different organizations and we’ve supported our team with time off to do that. Every year we do a donation drive for a different charity in the community.”
As companies strive to enhance technology and innovation, BAT Logistics’ approach remains basic, Jankowski said.
“How do we automate and leverage technology without losing the touch of relationships?” she said. “For us, it’s offering a service that is still personable versus transactional. I believe that sets us apart from others in the industry.”
Family-like culture
Jankowski said learned patience has also helped her succeed in building the company.
“If I was going too fast and they couldn’t keep up, then maybe I needed to be beside them,” she said. “That afforded me an opportunity to really, truly recognize where I was holding somebody else back or preventing them from reaching their full potential because I wouldn’t

delegate or I was going too fast. It was just easier for me to do it, but I was then limited, as well, because I could only get to where I was capable, versus having a team alongside me.”
Building a culture where co-workers are like family is the company’s crowning achievement, Jankowski said.
“We can talk revenue and personnel growth and business accolades all day long, but then I see my team being godparents to each other’s children and in each other’s weddings, and spending time together on the weekends, and everybody comes together and just supports and loves each other,” she said.
As the company grows — plans are to be 10 times larger within a decade — Jankowski has given herself time to reflect on the journey thus far. She said she would tell her younger self to be content with life.
“Appreciate where you’ve come from and what you’ve done,” she said, “but never settle and never be satisfied. I would tell that young lady that she needs to slow down and that bringing others alongside her does not mean doing it for them and I would tell her that she’s going to lose a lot of sleep, and that’s OK.”

Vino Mas
Viva Vino FORGET
RETIREMENT, DEANNA ALBERTSON UNCORKED A BOLD FUTURE
Deanna Albertson saw the writing on the wall. The owner of a technology company, she decided to close the office and retire in her early 50s. Too young and far from ready to sit still, however, she needed to plan the next stage of her life. Her love of wine led to an obvious conclusion: open a wine shop.
In fall 2013, Albertson, along with her husband, Greg, and friends John Langworth and Laurel Prestridge, opened Vino Mas. After 12 years, Vino Mas continues to be popular with wine enthusiasts.
Passion for wine
Albertson channeled her passion for wine into becoming a first-level sommelier, followed by an even more rigorous course to become a certified specialist in wine. The CSW process included learning everything imaginable about the beverage, from growing regions and taste to actually managing
the development of a grape vine from growing season to harvest to winemaking, turning her grapes into a sangria.
She poured equally into Vino Mas, focusing on wines from Europe and establishing the business as a go-to for people who either love older wines or are interested in learning about them. Some American wineries tend to prefer to mass-produce wines so there is a consistent taste, she said. Old World flavorsvary year to year, because grapes experience a variety of weather conditions.
“They tend to be lower in alcohol,” Albertson said. “They tend to not be manipulated, which we find in the United States. In the Old World, you’re getting what you’re getting. This is what Mother Nature gave them.”
Wine aficionados and newcomers can plumb the depths of Albertson’s knowledge during weekly wine

tastings, either as members of Vino Mas’ wine club or for an evening experience. The business has the largest wine club in Nebraska, which contributes to its standing among its competitors, Albertson said.
“You shouldn’t have to spend a lot to have good wine and to be able to experience wine from all over,” she said. “Our wine clubs introduce people to wines from all over the world.”
Vino Mas supports the community through a range of charity involvement with such organizations as Chariots4Hope, Project Pink’d and local school districts that benefit from Vino Mas’s charity wine tastings.
Loyalty leads to longevity
In the early days, Albertson routinely spent 85 hours per week at the store, meeting with distributors as well as engaging in other work-related activities. Then, she received a piece of unexpected advice that also contributed to the wine bar’s success.
“For the first year, year and a half, all I did was eat, drink and live here,” she said. “Then somebody said to me, ‘Deanna, you need to start working on your business instead of in your business.’ That, to me, was key.
“From that point on, I started networking. I started really getting out into the community, doing a lot more
charity work and just being involved in other stuff rather than just be here.”
Albertson credits customers and her staff for the store reaching 12 years in business, a true milestone considering a lot of places don’t make it past the first couple of years. She knows the business model of providing outstanding products, service and employee knowledge will continue its success.
“I have customers do this all the time: they’ll bring up bottles of wine and we get to know their palette and I’m like, ‘You’re not going to like that wine. Don’t buy it,’” Albertson said. “It might even be a more expensive bottle, but I’m like, ‘I’ve got a $15 bottle here that you’re going to love.’ So, I think they trust us.”
If she could share a charcuterie board and a glass of wine with her younger self, Albertson’s advice would be simple: Enjoy life.
“I ensure that I’m making more time for myself and for my family these days,” she said. “I literally spent the first three years here. My husband had to talk to the dog because he had nobody around. My kids were already out of the house. You know you’re not going be making money those first few years anyway, so you still have to put in work but I take more time for myself and for my husband now, and for my children and my grandchildren.”

VALO Wellness Spa
Relax and Recharge
CREATING A UNIQUE DAY SPA WITH WELLNESS MODALITIES
VALO Wellness Spa founder and owner Kelly Davis recognizes that day spas are long-established in the Omaha metro area. However, she launched VALO five years ago with some key differentiators.
“I wanted to create a space where people could unplug and recharge from just life in general. I also wanted to make a space that wasn’t like anything that we have here already,” she said. “By that, I mean there are med spas, there are other day spas, but there isn’t a spa that has an organic approach accompanied with our noninvasive wellness modalities… We’re more than just a spa, we’re a wellness center.”
Something for everyone
VALO Wellness Spa offers standard spa services: a wide selection of facials and facial enhancements from skin resurfacing to jade roller treatment; five
types of massages with additional options like LED therapy and Himalayan salt stones; body wraps and treatments; and body waxing or sugaring for hair removal.
Chiropractic services, including dry needling, are provided by Brett Classen, DC. VALO also features the Wellness Playground with the latest in 20- to 30-minute touchless wellness modalities including guided meditation, LED light therapy, compression therapy, and pulsed electro-magnetic fields. The spa also features immunity-boost mats and halotherapy (salt therapy) plus infrared therapy, all on comfortable zero-gravity loungers. Clients have reported not only relief from pain and discomfort, but a psychological benefit from the respite time, Davis said.
“They’re not just there to go into a treatment room,” she said. “They can unplug in the fireplace lounge or do one of the other wellness modalities in the

Wellness Playground.”
The company’s typical spa clients are women of a certain age, but the spa accommodates men with their own locker room and skin care services featuring specially formulated products. Teens also make up part of the clientele, especially for skin care treatments, as well as teen athletes coming in for muscle recovery treatments.
Wellness experiences are tailored to each client’s individual needs, and booking is available for individual services. Clients can also purchase membership packages that include complimentary services.
Davis is committed to sustainable living, and this is reflected in VALO’s design, choice of brands and operational standards. It’s a reflection of her passion for wellness, she said, to share knowledge and practices that promote overall well-being. Even as VALO strives to stay abreast of day spa trends, Davis also stays mindful of the mission to respect the environment.
“We are all-organic products, we are all-noninvasive and have that wellness center approach along with a high-end day spa,” she said.
She’s also strived to build local connections through the business.
“We’ve been able to do little fundraisers, little drives, one for the Women’s Center For Advancement for diapers, or one to donate feminine hygiene products to those in need,” she said. “We try to create a community around that.”
Faith and trust
With the benefit of hindsight, Davis said she’s learned a few lessons in her five years in business.
“I had started listening — back before I even opened the spa — to a spa-business-specific podcast. (The host) always talked about this program that she had. It took me three years to finally join that program and when I did it helped us create systems and structure,” she said.
“I wish I would have done that program prior to opening, and had systems and structures a little more solidified and set in place prior to opening. I think it would have helped launch us even further in the beginning.”
Another learning experience was taking maternity leave in 2024, which Davis said helped teach her to let go.
BY KARA SCHWEISS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEBRA S. KAPLAN
“I had to step out of business, and it was definitely challenging, figuring out what processes and protocols needed to be set in place,” she said. “That was, I think, the best thing that could have happened for the business. It has helped it grow; I was gatekeeping too much.”
Davis admits she was initially fearful to hand over her businesses to someone else, but had much confidence in one of her employees, Kayla Kimball, to step in.
“(Kayla) started off as one of my day-one aestheticians and now she is officially the manager. She runs everything,” Davis said. “I think taking the leap of faith and trusting her to guide and drive the ship, if you will, has been absolutely a game-changer.”
VALO is continuing to grow with many new clients finding the day spa through recommendations from others who’ve been satisfied with their experience.
“Starting to become a household name is amazing to see,” Davis said. “It was this little concept that I dreamed up in my home office, and now it’s a reality.”

Light the Night 2025 Kickoff 2024 ACHIEVEMENTS SHOWCASED
Family, friends, and supporters of those with leukemia and lymphoma came together at Lucky Bucket Brewery on May 15 to kick off the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s largest fundraising campaign, Light the Night.
The campaign will culminate Sept. 25 with the Light the Night Walk at Stinson Park. The goal this year is to raise $550,000 and have 15,000 participants.
The event introduced some special guests, such as the family of Ron Hood. Hood was diagnosed in 2016 with multiple myeloma. He and his family became passionate supporters of the cause, and have raised over $73,000. Ron passed away in January 2024, but his family still raised $15,795 last year.
Leading the corporate teams in fundraising for 2024 was Harrison Financial Services, which brought in $35,000, including funds from 21 team members who raised more than $1,000.
Josh White, chief business development officer at Metonic Real Estate Solutions, was awarded the honor of Top Fundraising Individual. The total at his Links Fore LLS last year was $25,000.
The crowd also heard from Sammi and Steve Kaiser, whose young daughter Sylvi, is battling B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and Clarissa Johnson, a three-time survivor of cancer.
FROM LEFT, TRACY FISHER WITH CLARISSA JOHNSON, THE 2025 LIGHT THE NIGHT OMAHA ADULT HONORED HERO. IN 2009, AFTER LOOKING AT PROOFS OF HER SENIOR YEARBOOK PICTURES, JOHNSON DECIDED TO GET RID OF A LUMP THAT WAS ON THE SIDE OF HER NECK. THAT RESULTED IN MULTIPLE DOCTOR VISITS AND SURGERY — WITH A DIAGNOSIS OF CANCER.

BLAKE MARTIN PRESIDENT, FRANNET
EDUCATION: UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
Go Your Own Way BLAKE MARTIN HELPS ENTREPRENEURS REALIZE THEIR DREAMS
As Blake Martin himself will tell you, one important element of success in business ownership is recognizing opportunities. As a matter of fact, he’s living proof of this indispensable rule for entrepreneurs.
Martin’s career path is paved with maximized opportunities, even if they weren’t always part of the native Michigander’s plan for success.
“I really didn’t come from an entrepreneurial family. I kind of fell into entrepreneurship,” he said. “I was the kid that was always doing something. I didn’t know it was entrepreneurship at the time, I just thought of it as trying to earn some money.”
Amazing journey
Career fate first intervened after Martin graduated from college with the intention of pursuing his doctorate in clinical psychology. A professor told him experience in the medical field would increase his chances of getting into a top graduate program, so Martin landed a job with the Visiting Nurse Association, a pioneer in the home health field.
“After I was there for a little while, I suddenly realized I’d stumbled into something that had a real future,” he said. “A couple years later, I met a guy who wanted to start a home care agency and I went into partnership with him. We started a private pay home care agency back when nobody knew what that was.”
Once the business started to take off, the partners started thinking seriously about expansion. They decided franchising was the way to go even though, once again, it
came with a steep learning curve. Undeterred, Martin dove in and deciphered the role of franchisor so successfully he was eventually recruited by Omaha-based in-home health care company Right At Home.
“I thought, ‘Well, I’ll do that for a year or two,’” he said with a chuckle. “That was 21 years ago. I never imagined that I would live in Omaha all these years, but the job went great, and I met a local girl and got married, started a family. Now I intend to be here forever.”
Leading others
Today, Martin and that local girl — his wife, Shannon — form a potent ownership team at the helm of FranNet of the Heartland, a franchise brokerage and consulting business they co-launched in 2016. Based in Louisville, Kentucky, FranNet’s model helps individuals learn more about franchises and determine what business fits their goals best and then helps connect them to the right franchise opportunity.
Martin said a major draw to the business was the no-cost advising he gets to do with aspiring entrepreneurs.
“I love the coaching piece,” he said. “From the time that we built that home care agency into a franchise and then when I got into Right at Home and did all kinds of different things helping franchisees grow, (coaching) was the thing I liked the most. When I got to that point in my career where I really wanted to go back into the entrepreneurial side of things, I wanted to find something where I could help people go through the process.”
DWAIN
I love the coaching piece … I wanted to find something where I could help people go through the process.
One of the things that makes Martin particularly good at his current venture is having spent time both as a franchisee and as a franchisor during his career.
“Being the franchisor gave me a perspective that winning in small-business ownership, when you’re part of a franchise system, is a long game,” he said. “It’s not a quarterly earnings report or a one-year event, it’s all about building and expanding the whole into being greater than the sum of its parts over a long period of time. What I learned as a franchisor was you have to have the discipline and the vision to make difficult but important long-term decisions that are best for the brand and the future of your franchisees.
“If you’re the local franchisee, like I am now and like I help people become, you have to really think about, OK, I joined this system, an organization, that has the wherewithal and the resources to be in this industry decades from now, not just days from now. Therefore, successful franchisees have to trust in that vision and execute and follow the system and let it work for them.”
Win-win
Interacting with the public as he does, Martin said he’s encouraged by what he sees for the future of local entrepreneurism, especially through franchising.
“(Franchises are) definitely more popular,” he said. “If not for COVID-19, the franchising industry would probably be over a million independently owned and operated locations right now. As it is, it’s close to 900,000 franchise locations altogether, and it is definitely going to continue to grow and expand from here.”
Martin not only provides coaching to the people who seek him out through his business, but he’s also spent a lot of time and energy promoting entrepreneurship in the community. He’s addressed myriad groups on the opportunities and challenges of owning a franchise and has been active in numerous organizations including Business Ethics Alliance, SCORE, Veterans in Business Forum, Bellevue Offutt Rising Professionals, Bunker Labs, Offutt’s Boots to Business, the Entrepreneur’s Education Collaborative program and SourceLink Nebraska.
He has also advised business organizations and municipalities on ways to create ecosystems that are attractive to entrepreneurs. He sees his community service as the ultimate win-win.
“The volunteer work that I do and the economic development forums that we put on for free in the surrounding communities that aren’t as big as Omaha or Lincoln are all about trying to give back,” he said. “Shannon and I believe that if you achieve success in small business ownership, you have an obligation to give back to the community that helped you achieve that success. Now, granted, I help people all over the country, but the vast majority of what I do and the core of where I help people is right here in the Midlands.
“From the very beginning, we wanted to build our brand the right way, based upon giving back and letting people know that we’re trying to do something that helps the community. In exchange for that, we hope the community will help us by bringing us customers who end up starting their own businesses.”

FABULOUS INSIGHTS
THE BIGGEST REASON PEOPLE ARE DRAWN TO FRANCHISING: A LOT OF IT HAS TO DO WITH TWO FACTORS; ONE, THE SECURITY PEOPLE SEE IN FRANCHISING. TWO, YOU’RE IN BUSINESS FOR YOURSELF, BUT NOT ALL BY YOURSELF. YOU GET COACHING FROM PEOPLE WHO’VE BEEN THERE, DONE THAT BEFORE.
THE KEY TO SUCCESS AS A FRANCHISEE: THE THING THAT’S NEVER CHANGED IS IF YOU TAKE THAT LEAP OF FAITH AND BUY INTO THE SYSTEM AS BUILT — THAT IS, FOLLOW THE SYSTEM — YOU’RE VERY LIKELY TO HAVE SUCCESS. YOU JOIN A FRANCHISE SYSTEM AND DECIDE TO DO IT YOUR OWN WAY, YOU’VE PROBABLY THROWN AWAY AN INVESTMENT AND YOU’VE MINIMIZED YOUR CHANCES OF SUCCESS, FOR SURE.
ASSESS THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS AS FRANCHISE OWNERS: I’VE ALWAYS BEEN VERY APPREHENSIVE ABOUT PUTTING PEOPLE INTO GENERATIONAL BOXES, BUT I’VE BEEN PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY THE MILLENNIALS AND GEN ZS THAT I’VE WORKED WITH, WHO ARE SO DRIVEN TO FIND AN OPPORTUNITY THAT ALLOWS THEM TO DO THEIR OWN THING. THEY HAVE A DESIRE AND A LEVEL OF CREATIVITY THAT’S REALLY REASSURING TO ME.
MOST SATISFYING ASPECT OF YOUR SUCCESS IN FRANCHISING: WE’RE TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY TRYING TO GROW THE COMMUNITIES THAT HAVE HELPED US GROW OUR BUSINESS. THAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT TO US AND IF THERE’S ANYTHING THAT I’M MOST PROUD OF, IT’S THAT WE’VE DONE A BETTER AND BETTER JOB OF ACHIEVING THOSE DUAL AND OVERLAPPING GOALS.
THE SECRET TO WORKING WITH ONE’S SPOUSE: OUR YIN AND YANG IS, I’M THE ONE WHO LOVES TO DO INTERVIEWS, STAND ON A STAGE, TALK ABOUT OUR BUSINESS, AND DO FACE-TO-FACE COACHING. SHE ALWAYS HAS RUN THE BACK END OF THIS, USING HER DUAL DEGREES IN IT AND ACCOUNTING. THAT ENABLES ME TO GO OUT THERE AND SPEND MOST OF MY TIME DRUMMING UP BUSINESS AND COACHING FOLKS.

THE FRANCHISEE:
Just how big is the franchising industry in the U.S.?
Spurred on by a decade of consecutive year-overyear growth, the franchising industry in the U.S. has never been bigger. Just how big is the franchising industry in the U.S.? To provide you with the most accurate snapshot, we decided to turn to the industry’s leading trade organization, the International Franchise Association. Each year, the IFA partners with FRANdata — a leading market intelligence group — to issue its highly anticipated Franchising Economic Impact Report, typically released in conjunction with its annual convention in February.
The Franchising Economic Impact Report uses predictive analysis to forecast growth, broken down by different industries and business sectors as well as geographically. The report also provides a macroeconomic overview of employment, wages, consumer sentiment, household income and a lending outlook. Below are the key highlights of this report:
• The number of franchise establishments in the U.S. is expected to reach 851,000 units — a 2.5% year-overyear increase.
• Total employment in the franchise industry will surpass 9 million workers — a 2.4% year-over-year increase.
• U.S. franchising output will achieve a record $936.4 billion — a 4.4% increase from 2024.
• Franchise GDP is expected to grow at a 5% pace, topping $578 billion — a 1.9% increase from 2024.
• Industries with the highest growth potential include retail food, home services and professional services.
• Geographically speaking, the southeast U.S. and southwest U.S. will experience the highest growth, at 6.2% and 8.5%, respectively.
The Midwest, which includes the state of Nebraska, ranks second out of five geographical outlooks in the U.S., with nearly 180,000 establishments, 1.85 million employees and $202.1 billion in output. All combined, the predicted growth rate for Nebraska is 2.5%, the third consecutive year of growth.
With positive numbers like these, there’s never been a better time to explore franchise ownership.

Q&A:
Q: Why did you choose this industry?
CITY WIDE FACILITY SOLUTIONS OMAHA
JEFF AND MEREDITH ERICKSON, CO-OWNERS
A: We chose this industry because we saw how essential it is for businesses to have a reliable partner who truly understands their facility needs. The commercial building maintenance sector lacked a single major player, yet demand was high as owners sought to protect their investments and provide clean, safe environments for tenants.
Q: What is the business model of your franchise?
A: City Wide takes the stress of juggling multiple vendors off our clients’ shoulders. We help manage janitorial services and more than 20 additional services. We offer one point of contact that helps save the client time as we solve their problems and ensure they receive professional communication and experienced project management. One vendor, one point of contact, unlimited possibilities.
Q: Why did you choose this franchise?
A: We chose this franchise because of the incredible “ripple effect” it creates for our family, employees and the entire community Being part of City Wide means we can directly bless many people by partnering with small, local businesses to help them thrive. By supporting these companies, we contribute to the success of our neighbors, friends and the state we call home.
Q: What challenges have you faced?
A: We’ve faced many challenges since opening our franchise. COVID-19 hit us hard, as our doors had only been open a little over a year, and we were barely in the black. We made it through and we still hit our goal that year. Navigating regulations and state laws added another layer of complexity, as well as figuring out how to hire the right people. Even growth became a challenge; each new milestone came with fresh obstacles, and we had to push through exhaustion when it felt like we were sprinting every day.
Q: What have been your biggest wins?
A: Our biggest wins include expanding from just four employees to 20 in six years, and we’re on track to add three or four more in 2025. During that same time period, we grew our business tenfold, a testament to both our hardworking team and the resilience of our model. Surviving and thriving through COVID-19 was another defining moment for us, proving we can adapt and continue to meet our clients’ needs even in the most challenging times.
Q: What does the future hold?
A: Our future centers on achieving “chaos-free growth” while continuing to make a positive impact on the people and organizations we serve. Part of this strategy includes acquiring local companies in the commercial janitorial industry, which allows us to expand our reach and deliver even more solutions under one trusted umbrella. We remain committed to spreading the “ripple effect” as far and wide as possible. By forging strong partnerships and investing in our community, we can provide more jobs, support local businesses and make a meaningful difference where we live and work.

The Silent Burden of Leadership
HOW FRACTIONAL SUPPORT CAN REDUCE EXECUTIVE BURNOUT
PRESENTED BY HORSEPOWER TODAY IN SUPPORT OF MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
Mid-size businesses often benefit from an established leadership team and defined structure but that doesn’t make them immune to burnout. When a key leader exits, a role remains unfilled or departments are stretched thin, the pressure doesn’t disappear, it shifts. More often than not, it lands squarely on the shoulders of already-busy executives.
In today’s tight labor market, talent gaps are increasingly common and disruptive. Leaders are being asked to step in — again and again — on tasks far outside their expertise. A CFO might be pulled into HR compliance. A COO may be handling marketing strategy. A CEO could find themselves overseeing payroll or vendor negotiations simply because there’s no one else available. These extra responsibilities compound quickly, leading to stress, inefficiency and mounting burnout across the C-suite.
Fractional executive support is a modern solution built for moments like these. Whether due to a sudden vacancy, a hiring mismatch or a short-term need, fractional professionals — experienced leaders who step in on a part-time or project basis — can stabilize operations and restore focus where it’s needed most.
Take finance, for example. When a mid-sized company preparing for a major investment lost its internal accounting team, Horsepower Today placed a fractional finance leader to guide the business through due diligence and steady financial operations. Without adding a permanent salary or rushing a key hire, the company maintained momentum and reduced leadership strain during a high-pressure period.
This model works because it provides relief without sacrificing control. Fractional leaders don’t just advise from the sidelines, they integrate into the team, align with company goals and bring immediate clarity to complex challenges. Whether in finance, HR or operations, they carry the load with confidence so existing leaders can return to doing what they do best.
One executive shared their experience after bringing in fractional financial support:
“We were preparing for a significant investment and the volume of financial requests was overwhelming — especially since I don’t have a finance background,” they said. “To make matters worse, our finance team exited just as things ramped up.
“Bringing in fractional support through Horsepower Today was a turning point. They stepped in immediately, managed investor requirements with precision, and stabilized the function during a critical time. I could refocus on leading the business, knowing the financial side was in expert hands.”
Companies of all sizes — from growing mid-sized firms to complex enterprise organizations — face moments when internal capacity is stretched thin. Whether it’s a gap in leadership, a stalled initiative or the need for specialized expertise, fractional support offers a flexible, high-impact solution. It fills critical roles quickly, keeps strategic priorities on track, and protects leadership bandwidth when and where it’s needed most.
No business can afford stalled growth or burned-out executives, and no leadership team should be forced to do more with less indefinitely. Fractional support offers a smarter way forward — one that prioritizes both business performance and executive well-being.
Horsepower Today provides fractional leadership in finance, HR and operations for mid- to large-size businesses across Omaha and the Midlands. Learn more at horsepowertoday.com
A Changing of the Guard
HFS spends a lot of time discussing how much our market and economy has transformed over recent decades. We believe the foundation of this change was the birth of the digital economy, which continues to encroach upon firms in the traditional one. However, many investors remain stuck in the past. They analyze business sentiment surveys, eagerly await reports of economic indicators, and carefully parse through statements from the Federal Reserve. This may have worked in the pre-internet age when the U.S. economy and its stock market largely consisted of mature manufacturing and commodity firms. Identifying stages of business cycles is helpful when investing in cyclical sectors like banks, miners, construction equipment, etc. However, in our opinion, it’s much less relevant in this digital age, when our stock market is being led by secular growth firms benefiting from long-term trends.
To further this point, just look at how much younger our stock market has become.
Companies may not die of old age, but their growth rates sure can. The chart above shows the average age of the top five holdings in the S&P 500 over recent decades. Firms can only grow faster than the overall economy for so long. Eventually, they saturate their end markets and growth matures. Our point is that the birth of the digital economy has made the stock market much younger and less cyclical. The top five holdings of the S&P 500 today are about one-third the age of what it was in 1990. Microsoft is the old man of this group at 50 years of age since it was founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1975. Meta Systems is the young buck, having just turned 21 years old. It generated $165 billion in sales last year. It took General Motors 117 years to reach this mark. IBM has yet to achieve it.
is a rare find in the traditional economy. Such business models can allow them to convert a higher percentage of their profits into free cash flow, or cash that can be distributed back to shareholders after capital investments.
If our stock market is being led by firms that are earlier in their growth phase and have business models that have the potential to generate higher amounts of cash compared to those in the past, why shouldn’t the S&P 500 trade at a historical premium? Is it enough of a premium considering the potential for
artificial intelligence to meaningfully increase the profits and addressable market for the top digital firms?
Times have changed, and HFS believes investors need to adapt to this digital reality — not fight it.
Not only are these firms younger, but they are arguably better business models. Many digital firms enjoy high margins and require little capital, which

MIDLANDS LEADERS q&a
ASH GOODSELL, CENTRIS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION
Midlands Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in the community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. To nominate someone for this section, email news@mbj.com with the individual’s name, position, company and email.
Bio:
Ashley “Ash” Goodsell is a senior Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) fraud investigator at Centris Federal Credit Union in Omaha. Goodsell has been in her role at Centris for six years and has 10 years of law enforcement experience as a sworn police officer. She received her bachelor’s in sociology at the University of Iowa and her master’s degree in public administration from the University of Phoenix. She is a member of the Financial Institution Security Association board of directors.
What led you to your career field?
I fell into this industry by chance. In my law enforcement career, I saw financial crimes and the impact to the victims after the damage had occurred, and after 10 years in that role, I started to ask, “Can I do more?” I branched out and found the opportunity at Centris to be a fraud analyst.
I quickly realized from the lens of an analyst what financial crimes can do, not only to a financial institution but the crippling effect it had on the consumer. I was able to see the situations play themselves out in live time, and I knew right away that I had found my new home. I believe with my past experiences, training and expertise it set me up perfectly for this new journey.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy the most about my job are the members I get to talk to. These are usually hard conversations. Some days can be challenging with the emotions that can come with these conversations as the weight can be heavy on both parties, but I am thankful that the members that I get to talk to trust me to help them navigate through some of the hardest and scariest moments in their lives.
I have grown from being an analyst to now an investigator and have grown with the industry. I enjoy the challenges that fraud, scams and financial crimes bring, knowing every day these items are ever-evolving and -changing. This career field has helped me feel like I still can continue to protect and serve my community and be proactive in the fight against financial crimes.
What is something a mentor told you that has been essential to your career?
Two things have stuck out for me from mentors. These two items for me go hand in hand in the career paths that I have chosen.
“You have to be coachable,” refers to feedback, which in my line of work can be hard to hear when emotions are high and situations can be interrupted in many different ways. Being openminded to feedback, those coachable moments, lead to taking action to grow, develop and become better within your role.
“Be patient and give grace.” In my career, it can be easy to assign blame and become frustrated at hard situations. Finding a way to be patient, give grace and remember that bad things
happen to good people allows that moment of opportunity to connect, share the experience, give guidance and provide education. In those moments you have both parties showing engagement, feeling heard and both parties having some type of positive growth. To help me with this, I daily say to myself, “Can I do better? Can I be better?”
What steps do you take to keep your life in balance? I continue to work on this, but I am fortunate to have a great team at work full of peers who push me personally and professionally. Having that support allows me to work through challenges but also celebrate the wins. I think taking the steps to have the same support and dynamic outside of work is key. I have a fantastic support system outside of work that allows me to process the tough days, personally or professionally, and then
come back ready for the next day, feeling refreshed and motivated. One thing I practice every day, and also ask my kids every day, is, “What did you do great today, what was hard and, if anything, what could you do better?” Doing this helps me ensure I am balancing myself and self-reflecting in a positive light the outcome of my overall day, personally or professionally. I think doing this helps anyone stay balanced to help achieve their goals and overcome challenges.

PRESS RELEASE
CRE Summit Agenda Announced EVENT HIGHLIGHTS GROWTH,
The Commercial Real Estate (CRE) Summit — which started 36 years ago with 150 attendees at Creighton Law School — returns to the CHI Health Center Friday, Aug. 22. This year’s theme is “The Next Chapter: Growth, Change and Opportunity.”
The all-day summit — which welcomes hundreds of commercial real estate professionals each year — is designed to help industry gain momentum with innovative tools and information to drive a strong business and remain in the fast lane.
Early bird tickets are $325/person or $293.25/group of 20-plus and $310.50/ group of 10-19 people until June 11. After that, tickets increase to $345 / person. Late conference tickets (after Aug. 8) are $395/person. Hall of Fame Luncheon and students tickets are $75.
“The event has grown each year, and we’re expecting upwards of 800 commercial real estate professionals this year,” said Jerry Slusky, who founded the event back in 1990. “Not only have we experienced continued growth over the years, but our format has evolved to reflect what’s happening with commercial real estate each year. This year is no exception.
“We ’ve got a great lineup of speakers and presenters, attendees will have many opportunities to network and make contacts within the industry, and everyone will leave with more knowledge and enthusiasm for what’s to come locally and regionally in commercial real estate.”
The Aug. 22 CRE Summit kicks off with a networking breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by opening remarks and poetry from Nebraska State Poet Jewel Rodgers, a development manager with Noddle Companies.
Nate Kauffman, senior vice president, economist and Omaha Branch executive, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, will then give an update on recent economic developments and emerging risks that will shape the outlook for commercial real estate moving forward.
CHANGE AND OPPORTUNITY
During a short lunch, Scott Anderson, a licensed mental health practitioner and certified executive and life coach, will cover the topic “Burnout-Proof Success: 10 Quick & Proven Techniques for HighAchieving CRE Professionals.” Anderson, author of “You’re Not Toast” and founder of DoubleDare Executive Coaching, will share 10 fast-acting, science-backed techniques to help CRE professionals prevent and recover from burnout without sacrificing success. Four industry professionals yet to be announced will also be inducted into the CRE Hall of Fame Class of 2025.
The event also includes nine breakout sessions, and five Summit University Roundtables. The day will close with a talk by Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Heath Mello, titled “Omaha Reaches 1 Million: Planning the Path Forward for Growth and Development.”
Attendees can then join a happy hour from 3 to 5 p.m. at Let It Fly, 1080 Capitol Ave.
“I’m so excited to once again be part of the CRE Summit,” said event co-chair Chris Mensinger, senior vice president at Colliers. “There is no better event for commercial real estate professionals like the CRE Summit. It’s an opportunity to share ideas and network with fellow
professionals as well as learn about current and future industry trends and happenings. I highly recommend anyone in this industry participating.”
