Serving Their Community: VETERAN-OWNED BUSINESSES LEADING WITH PURPOSE

The values forged in military service — discipline, dedication, integrity and an unwavering commitment to mission — don’t end when the uniform comes off. For the veteran entrepreneurs featured in this issue, those principles have become the foundation of thriving businesses that serve the greater Omaha community with the same excellence they brought to serving their country.

From the laundromat to the bakery, from game-day headquarters to a treasure trove of vintage finds, these four businesses represent the diverse ways veterans continue their service through entrepreneurship. Each has translated military experience into business success, creating jobs, building community connections and proving that the leadership skills honed in the armed forces are well suited to the challenges of business ownership.

At Home Style Laundry & Dry Cleaners in Council Bluffs, Army veteran Bobbi Calderon has spent more than three decades ensuring that every customer’s laundry receives the same meticulous care. The veteran-owned business serves both the Council Bluffs and Omaha areas with a commitment to excellence that extends beyond clean clothes — supporting fellow veterans, first responders and military families, and even offering free dry cleaning for police uniforms.

Husker Hounds has been a cornerstone of Nebraska football fandom since 1995, operating two Omaha locations where passion for the Big Red meets the precision of veteran ownership. For Army Reserves veteran Scott Strunc, this family-run business doesn’t just sell merchandise — it creates a community hub where “Husker fans serving Husker fans” has become more than a motto; it’s a mission carried out with military-grade attention to detail and service.

At Reis’ Bakery, Navy veteran Aires Reis, who served more than 18 years, brings European pastry traditions to Omaha with the same dedication he brought to his naval career. Aires and Judy Reis transform imported French flour and authentic techniques into freshly baked breads and pastries that transport customers to Parisian street corners. Inside their shop, a POW/MIA table stands as a powerful reminder of their connection to military service — recently completed when a fellow Marine veteran gifted them a Purple Heart to honor all who have served and sacrificed.

Vintage Oasis offers 14,000 square feet of carefully curated nostalgia, where Navy veteran Steve Basilico has created more than just an antique store. It’s an experience that celebrates history, preserves memories and fosters the kind of childhood wonder that strengthens communities. Every vintage treasure reflects the same attention to detail and pride in mission that define military service.

These veteran entrepreneurs share more than military backgrounds: they share a commitment to community, quality and service that goes beyond profit margins. They hire locally, support fellow veterans, give back to their communities and build businesses that strengthen the fabric of greater Omaha.

As these four IMPACT 250 honorees are celebrated, their work reminds the community that the transition from military to civilian life isn’t an ending — it’s a transformation. The same individuals who once stood watch over the nation’s freedoms now stand behind counters, in kitchens and at the helm of businesses that make Omaha better every day.

Their stories show that when veterans bring their training, values and work ethic to entrepreneurship, everyone benefits. They don’t just build businesses; they build legacies of service that continue to impact lives long after their military careers end.

Also in this issue, organizations that help those who have served transition from military leaders to business owners are featured. Veteran-owned businesses provide vital services to the community as industry leaders, and these organizations help them navigate civilian life after years in public service.

Thank you for your service — both in uniform and in business.

TOP THINGS TO KNOW

Partner selected for Saddle Creek Bridge Project

In October, the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) awarded a preconstruction services contract to Hawkins Construction Co. as part of its plan to replace the Dodge Street/Saddle Creek Road overpass in Omaha’s Midtown area that dates back to the 1930s. The Saddle Creek Bridge Project is utilizing the construction manager/ general contractor (CM/GC) collaborative delivery process, an alternative delivery method touted as facilitating greater public-private teamwork and risk mitigation while improving cost and scheduling certainty. The anticipated construction schedule and impacts to traffic will be announced as the project progresses.

The Cottages by Siena Francis House receives national recognition

The Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition (AHTCC) named The Cottages by Siena Francis House in Omaha a 2025 recipient of the AHTCC Charles L. Edson Housing Tax Credit Excellence Award in the Special Populations category. The annual award honors developments that strengthen communities, improve resident opportunities and support economies in urban, suburban and rural areas across the country, and recipients are chosen through a rigorous selection process.

The Cottages by Siena Francis House provides 50 affordable homes for homeless individuals served by the Siena Francis House. Close to the main campus, the development expands the continuum of care, providing case management and other support to serve those transitioning out of homelessness.

Virtual tutoring available to all Nebraska K-12 students

The Nebraska State College System (NSCS) has expanded Nebraska SMART, its free virtual tutoring program, statewide, giving every K-12 student in Nebraska access to individual academic support from trained college tutors. Since launching as a pilot in February 2024, Nebraska SMART has provided more than 1,660 tutoring sessions to students in rural school districts across Nebraska. Initially serving three educational service units (ESUs), the program strategically expanded to include Nebraska Rural Community Schools Association member districts. With the addition of mid-sized districts earlier this year, Nebraska SMART is now positioned to serve all Nebraska school districts statewide.

Funded through a Nebraska Department of Education Improvement Grant, Nebraska SMART pairs K-12 students with teacher education candidates from Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State Colleges for personalized, online tutoring in core subjects such as English, math, science and social studies. Tutors are full-time students admitted to their college’s teacher education program, have completed background checks, and receive specialized training through their coursework. Each campus has a Nebraska SMART Coordinator who provides faculty oversight and ensures instructional quality.

UNMC nursing innovation launches nationally

A digital platform years in the making, created through a collaboration between the UNMC College of Nursing, UNeMed, UNeTech and Nebraska Medicine, will position UNMC at the forefront of health care innovation, its creators said. Familyroom.health now is scaling nationally to support families during critical care crises with tools, resources and peer guidance. The project has secured more than $1 million in funding, and the platform continues to be refined through clinical trials at Nebraska Medicine, even while signing pilot partnerships with other major health systems. The team will continue to track the experience of people who use the platform in order to refine and enhance it.

Passport applications accepted at Douglas County Courthouse

The Douglas County Clerk of the District Court is now certified to accept U.S. Passport applications at the Douglas County Courthouse, expanding access from only two locations serving the entire population of the county with very limited availability. Appointments are highly recommended and can be scheduled online, although walk-ins will also be accepted as time and staffing allow. Applicants should complete their passport application forms in advance at travel.state.gov and bring the required documentation to their appointment. The Clerk’s staff will review and process the paperwork before sending it to the U.S. Department of State’s Regional Passport Agencies. This new service is made possible through a collaboration between the Douglas County Clerk of the District Court and the Bureau of Consular Affairs, U.S. Department of State.

Family-Friendly Workplaces Certification program begins in Lincoln

The Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development and Lincoln Littles are beginning a new certification program, the Lincoln Family-Friendly Workplaces Certification Program, highlighting family-friendly businesses throughout the Lincoln community. According to LPED, organizations with family-friendly policies are not just good for employees, they strengthen the whole organization. By helping workers balance job and family responsibilities, such as through child care support, employers can attract and keep talent while building a more committed and motivated workforce. Companies that adopt these approaches often experience lower absenteeism and reduced health care costs as well as a healthier and more resilient workplace culture. Complete details on the certification program and qualifying criteria can be found at the LPED website.

Nebraska farm income higher in 2025

Nebraska net farm income is projected to increase by 42% or $8.42 billion in 2025, according to the Fall 2025 Nebraska Farm Income Outlook, a collaboration between the Center for Agricultural Profitability at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the Rural and Farm Finance Policy Analysis Center at the University of Missouri. This aligns with the national forecast of a 41% rise in U.S. farm income. The report indicates the projected increase is largely driven by higher livestock receipts and government payments in the state, even as crop receipts continue to decrease.

Home Style Laundry and Dry Cleaners

Army Vet Serves Community

Bobbi Calderon means it when she says business is all about people. It was people who led her to buy Home Style Laundry and Dry Cleaners in 2006.

“I was working in the corporate world, and got laid off, and I just really didn’t know what I wanted to do,” Calderon said. “Somebody introduced me to this business and I came in a couple times, worked with them, and just thought, ‘Yeah, that’s just not for me.’ But then I met customers and it changed my thinking.”

Today, the U.S. Army veteran loves what she does. It’s a far cry from when she was a sergeant working in personnel.

“I was a pencil pusher,” Calderon said.

Enhancing the experience

Dedicated to improving her laundry service, Calderon said she jumped at the chance in 2017 to expand it from 1,300 square feet to 2,000 square feet. She also added new machines to upgrade the laundry endeavor, she said.

People tend to view laundry as a chore they must do, so Calderon looks for ways to enhance the experience, including machines that operate with debit and credit cards or a mobile phone app. People can even use a rechargeable card.

“You can still use quarters, but it seems to be taking on more of a role that people want to be able to just swipe and go,” Calderon said.

If they don’t have time or don’t want to do laundry themselves, customers can drop off their clothes and Home Style employees will take care of them, washing and folding the clothes once they’re clean.

Community support

With a commitment to the Council Bluffs community, Calderon said Home Style Laundry and Dry Cleaners contributes to organizations such as Boy Scouts, cleaning flags that are displayed around town.

One cause maintains a soft spot in her heart, Spirit of Courage, a major fundraiser focused on cancer treatment for Jennie Edmundson Foundation. The organization helped pay for her cancer care, Calderon said, and this year Home Style folded about 2,500 shirts for the group.

“I had gotten a scholarship from them when I was going through my treatment,” she said. “I didn’t know who they were at the time, and they just called and said, ‘Your bills are paid off.’”

Looking ahead

Proud of owning her business for nearly two decades, Calderon’s goal for the future is to make the laundry experience more enjoyable for people.

“We’re still changing to accommodate other things that are changing outside of us,” Calderon said. “Just keep building the business, and how many people we can help. Whatever we can do to volunteer or anything else out in the community.”

To younger entrepreneurs both veteran and civilian, Calderon advised learning about accounting.

“Learn more about the business, itself, how the whole thing works,” she said. “(Home Style) was a turnkey business, and had been here for a long time prior to me, so I just kind of stepped into the role and went without any training or anything else. I just jumped in. I would have researched more and learned accounting.”

Husker Hounds

Big Red Loyalty Pays Off

Scott Strunc should have known he was destined to own a business related to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Growing up a Husker fan, he attended games early in his childhood. That obsession with the Big Red led to road trips with college buddies to other Big Eight schools.

While a student at the University of Nebraska Omaha, Strunc figured he could use a reset, and his sister, a Marine, encouraged him to join the military. Set to sign up in the Army as a military policeman, a friend suggested he enlist in the Army Reserves as a truck driver. He spent 11 years in the Army Reserves.

Fan favorite

Strunc was working as a probation officer in Omaha when he and his wife Janine opened Husker Hounds in 1995, a year after Nebraska won its first national championship under Head Coach Tom Osborne. Located in a strip center at 84th and Center, the Struncs hit pay dirt as the store became a fan favorite.

After six years, the Struncs realized they had outgrown the space they had leased and sought a building of their own. A building across the street soon hoisted a big red flag signifying Strunc’s business.

Loyal fans

For nearly 20 of Husker Hounds’ 30 years, Husker fans have remained faithful through challenging times for the football program, Strunc said.

“The fans have been the heroes through the whole thing,” he said. “If it weren’t for our fans, I would have had to get a real job. When they say there’s no place like Nebraska, there truly isn’t.

“They’ve probably proven that more now; I’m probably most proud of the fact that we’re still around, because we’ve been pretty irrelevant in football for going on about 20 years now. A lot of turmoil, a lot of firings, but the fans keep filling that stadium. They keep coming in to the store. They might not always be happy, but they’re always loyal.”

Customer-focused

Knowing that people can buy Husker gear anywhere, Strunc believes Husker Hounds’ customer service, product selection and quality play key roles in separating the store from others in the area.

“We listen to what the fans want,” Strunc said. “I’ll write it down, and we actively look for what they’re asking for. So it’s not some cookie cutter place.”

If he had any advice for that young soldier back in the day, Strunc would tell him to try harder if things weren’t working out. Figure out why and adapt.

“We’ve been here for 30 years, and it’s not the same as it was 30 years ago,” Strunc said. “It’s still a good area, but things change in the city, so you better be able to adapt to whatever the next generation wants. We’ve always prioritized our brick-and-mortar locations, and that’s still where my heart lies. But I have also not been blind to the fact that people are buying more online, and so we’re making that work at a higher level.”

Reis’ Bakery

Navy Vet Honors Missing

FRESH PASTRIES PAIRED WITH TRIBUTE TO FALLEN HEROES

Walking into Reis’ Bakery, customers immediately notice the table in the corner, draped with a white tablecloth. An empty chair in front of a single dinner setting, with a red rose in a vase and other items, honor the men and women listed as Missing in Action/Prisoner of War, who have not yet returned home from America’s wars.

The future of Reis’ Bakery is tied to the return of MIA/POWs.

“Many of them, not only didn’t they come home, but we don’t know where they’re at,” said owner Aires Reis. “We don’t know anything about them, and we can’t forget that, because this country was built on their shoulders.”

New York transplants

Reis and his wife, Judith, are New York transplants to Nebraska. After almost 19 years of active duty service, the retired Navy petty officer first class opened Reis’ Bakery at the encouragement of one of their daughters. It seemed like a natural move for the supply and logistics specialist.

Reis started a cottage bakery, creating pastries and treats out of the couple’s kitchen at home. That lasted about six months, Reis said.

“We were in business for about a month and a half, and it just blew up,” he said. “We just couldn’t keep up with the demand from home. I thought that we can either go back to the corporate world or open up a brick-and-mortar shop. Funny thing is that my neighbor back in Brooklyn was always saying, ‘You ought to open up a bakery.’”

Reis’ Bakery opened its doors in July and has been consistently busy, Reis said.

Fresh ingredients

Using French flour, Reis said customers who have had issues consuming gluten haven’t had those experiences with their baked goods.

“We had no idea,” he said. “They come in and constantly compare what we make to what their recent trip to Paris had.”

The bakery prides itself on using fresh ingredients, nothing prepackaged, Reis said.

“We know what goes into them, and it’s nothing that I wouldn’t feed my family,” he said. “Everything you can pronounce and they don’t have multiple syllables. It’s plain and simple.”

Nebraska foodies

Nebraskans’ knowledge of food impresses him, Reis said.

“We had no idea that Nebraskans were the foodies that they are, they know quality,” he said.

The bakery has been blessed with loyal customers in the few months it’s been open, Reis said.

“I am always amazed and extremely humbled when I come around the corner and people tell me, ‘You know, Omaha needed this. Needed you. Please don’t stop and we love what you do.’ It’s just been amazing.”

Automating some processes will allow Reis to sleep in occasionally.

“The next big goal is to not have to come in at 3 o’clock in the morning,” he said.

Reis’ advice to other entrepreneurs is simple.

“Don’t underestimate the level of effort and never, ever compromise quality,” he said.

Vintage Finds Bring Joy

NAVY VET TURNS COLLECTION INTO THRIVING OMAHA BUSINESS

Steve Basilico bought a building on Leavenworth Street thinking he’d store his landscaping equipment there. But then it struck him: he could display his years of collectibles on the main floor and enjoy his collection of “stuff.”

Then, the Navy veteran’s entrepreneurial skills took over, and Basilico decided to sell vintage items, leading to the creation of Vintage Oasis. It started as a monthly venture.

Pop-up success

“We had a pop-up event where 15 smaller vendors came,” Basilico said. “Then we did another one. I didn’t really want to sell all my stuff, but when I finally started seeing how much joy it brought other people to buy these super-cool pieces that I’ve been looking for and finding, it was just better to let them go than be in a box, hidden. I’m still always trying to get stuff on display.”

The monthly sales did well, so Basilico decided to open four days a week. The move proved successful, as Vintage Oasis has been voted as “Best in Omaha” for its classic wares, he said.

Shoppers’ enthusiasm

“I appreciate other people’s enthusiasm for my picks and finds,” Basilico said. “It feels good hearing people say, ‘I remember this,’ or ‘My grandma had that.’ I was going to have all my stuff upstairs and finally see it all completed, cleaned, polished and sorted out for me to look at my own private museum. But, it worked out differently.”

The key to the store’s success was hiring the right people to organize the inventory and manage the daily operations, he said.

He also reduced the number of vendors to a few people, focusing on classic record albums and glassware, Basilico said.

Along with his 30-year-old Oasis Landscaping company, life has been good for the veteran, who said he’s come a long way from serving in the Middle East to running two successful businesses.

Joining the Navy in mid-1990, Basilico found himself driving a forklift in Saudi Arabia by that Thanksgiving. He eventually joined his fellow sailors aboard a supply ship as part of the Saratoga group, Basilico said.

Future plans

Since opening Vintage Oasis, Basilico said he’s always looking for ways to enhance people’s visits. Plans include expanding a pinball area in the basement, adding other vintage games and creating an interactive experience, he said.

“I enjoy the curating so much that I forget to go home, take care of myself,” Basilico said.

Building a kitchenette and new restrooms will allow people to rent the main floor for special events, Basilico said.

If he could travel back in time and share some vintage collecting time with his younger self, Basilico said he’d suggest ensuring he has a market for his wares.

“It’s worthless unless there’s a buyer,” Basilico said. “I can’t tell anybody how to do it, because that’s one of the benefits of this. I never started this store to get money. You’ve got to put in the hours. It ain’t going to happen on its own. And definitely surround yourself with quality people.”

Helping Veterans Set Up Shop

Our veteran-owned businesses reflect the best of Bellevue’s spirit — service, integrity and perseverance.

As a child playing “Army” with her brothers, Eswari Kalugasalam always ended up as the bad guy — and a casualty.

When Kalugasalam, who grew up in Malaysia, first laid eyes on Offutt Air Force Base, she took a photo and sent it to her siblings and former adversaries with the message “Guess who’s working with the good guys now?”

Today, as director of the Veterans Business Outreach Center-Nebraska and Iowa with the Nebraska Enterprise Fund, Kalugasalam helps veterans turn business ideas into reality.

“When they come and see me they say, ‘This is what I want to achieve; how do I go about doing it?’” Kalugasalam said. “‘If this is what I’m going to achieve, then what are the steps I need to take to get there?’”

Nebraska is home to an estimated 105,500 to 117,000 veterans. While veteran-

owned businesses are harder to count, Sarpy County alone has nearly 30, according to VeteranOwnedBusiness.com.

The former military members bring a unique range of skills and a can-do spirit to the business world and their contributions to the economy and community are welcome, said Diane Bruce, president and CEO of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce.

“Here in Bellevue, with our strong connection to Offutt Air Force Base, veteran entrepreneurs contribute daily to the local economy by creating jobs, supporting fellow veterans, and running businesses across a wide range of industries, from retail and construction to professional services,” Bruce said. “Their leadership, dedication and community-focused approach make them a vital part of our city’s economic and daily life.”

“This is the least that I could do. This is the only way I could give back to this country.

Military mindset

Perhaps not surprisingly, veterans have a reputation for bringing a mission-driven approach to business. Kalugasalam said as entrepreneurs, they tend to have clear objectives, possess discipline and are results-oriented.

She also said veterans are good at identifying goals and working backwards to find ways to achieve them. Analytical skills, she said, allow veterans to diagnose problems and pivot accordingly if necessary.

“They are more confident about taking calculated risks and have an amazing work ethic, which serves them well in building a successful business,” Kalugasalam said. “Intergrity and trustworthiness remain the core of their business. In fact, our clients often show up early for meetings. I have learned that being on time is late.”

In her experience with veteran business owners, Bruce has noted the way military values govern how they lead and operate, focusing on teamwork and accountability.

“They are trained problem-solvers who stay calm under pressure and adapt quickly when challenges arise,” Bruce said. “Their leadership experience helps them build strong teams and earn the trust of customers and employees alike.”

The U.S. military is spread to bases and installations around the world, but there is a sense of community and responsibility that veteran business owners bring to their civilian work, Kalugasalam said. Many, in fact, are prone to entertaining the idea of running a nonprofit.

“Many vet business owners prioritize giving back to the communities. Their businesses have a sense of purpose and practice social responsibility,” Kalugasalam said.

Beyond the bottom line, Bruce said veteran business owners often see entrepreneurship as a continuation of their service.

“They give back to their communities, mentor other veterans and create opportunities for others — often hiring fellow service members transitioning to civilian life,” she said.

Kalugasalam said veterans don’t blink if she offers suggestions or critiques they might not want to hear. Used to taking and following orders, the veterans simply want to achieve their objective.

“They do not take it in a bad manner,” she said. “That’s another reason I love this job. They don’t think I’m attacking them. I’m putting forth valid questions.”

Mission planning

Certainly military experience teaches veterans how to achieve goals, but making rank is not the same as making a buck, and, like their civilian counterparts, veteran business owners face certain challenges which include developing a business plan and obtaining capital.

“If you want to start a business tomorrow, that’s not going to happen. I’m going to help

- ESWARI KALUGASALAM, DIRECTOR, VETERANS BUSINESS OUTREACH CENTER

you succeed long term,” Kalugasalam said. “There is a process.”

Military people are self-sufficient and used to getting things done by themselves, she said, so they may not always seek out help or even know where to look for the resources they need. In trying to assist veterans in securing grants and navigating bureaucracies at the VBOC, Kalugasalam said she wants to help the ex-military business owners avoid problems before they start.

“I don’t want you to come to me when you are knee-deep in trouble,” she said.

Veterans, like many first-time business owners, have difficulty sorting through funding options and have limited access to traditional capital resources. Kalugasalam likes to begin with a discovery meeting in which she and the prospective owner talk about the feasibility of a business plan and discuss the ins and outs of issues like financing. VBOC also offers easyto-use tools to help start the owner on his or her path.

“We are often asked about grants as alternative funding solutions,” Kalugasalam said. “Unfortunately, there are no specific grants for veterans. Last year the Nebraska Small Business Assistance Act Grant was made available for startups and existing businesses. We helped our clients with the business plans and financial projections to support their applications. I’m proud to have been able to help some clients get the grant.”

The VBOC also has tools in place to help develop business plans and marketing and sales strategies and define target markets and customers. There are challenges for all business owners and not just veterans, Kalugasalam said, in creating brand awareness, growing revenue and reaching new customers.

“They do have challenges in writing this business plan,” she said. “They have this in their head, but how do they get it on a piece of paper?”

The VBOC program offers free business counseling services and entrepreneurship training as well as helping with networking and mentorship opportunities and guiding veterans through challenges that include licensing, regulations and government policies.

Whether in classes and seminars or in less formal environments, Kalugasalam encourages veteran business owners to talk to each other and share ideas. They may find a potential business partner or client in the process, she said.

One of the biggest distinguishing factors is the camaraderie veterans share, which often leads those in the community to want to look out for each other, even if they’re potential competitors. Kalugasalam said she sometimes has to advise veterans to see to their own bottom line before helping a comrade in arms.

“They are a very tight-knit community. ‘So and so is doing this so I’m going to help them do that.’ Do you know how hard it is for me to tell them to take care of your own basket?” she said, falling back on Buddhist philosophy to make her case. “You need to be full first before you pour water for someone else.” MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL

Lights, Camera, ChristmasLand

TRAVIS FREEMAN’S 35-YEAR DREAM LIGHTS UP THE HEARTLAND

Visions of brightly colored butterflies fill visitors with wonder as they drive through the forest at Travis Freeman’s ChristmasLand this holiday season. On a preview night in early November, Freeman stood at the exit gate greeting every car as it left the property. The word he frequently heard was “Amazing.”

While butterflies aren’t something one normally thinks of during the holiday season, this installation was the first one Freeman envisioned when designing his new seasonal attraction. The 175 eight-foottall butterfly light displays stretch across 1,400 feet of the Enchanted Forest. Everything else grew from there: a 20-foot combine harvesting candy canes; a 35-foot stack of presents; elephants, rhinos and giraffes towering over the roadway; nine illuminated tunnels; and more than 750 individual displays spread across two miles of paved road.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” more than one person told him.

ChristmasLand officially opened Nov. 13 and after 35 years of building Christmas light displays for other people, Freeman was finally seeing his childhood dream illuminate the night sky.

“Upside-down tomato cages, it seemed like, with lights wrapped around them,” Freeman said, describing what the Christmas displays looked like at Ak-Sar-Ben Race Track when his parents took him through as a kid. “Just some trees and maybe a reindeer.”

Even then, Freeman thought, “I really wanna do a Christmas drive-through and make it over the top.”

Building the business

Freeman started making steel-frame Christmas displays as a teenager, building in his parents’ front yard. People stopped to ask where they could buy them, creating the business model for Brite Ideas Decorating.

Today, Brite Ideas operates a 20,000-square-foot retail store in Omaha and supplies more than 550 distributors across the country. The distributor network keeps roughly 25,000 people, mostly seasonal laborers such as those in construction, employed during the fourth quarter. Brite Ideas has a factory in China, to which Freeman travels twice a year. That provided the manufacturing infrastructure critical for ChristmasLand.

“We wouldn’t have been able to do (ChristmasLand) without it,” Freeman said.

Two years ago, 70 acres of flat cornfield became available about a mile southeast of Valley, just off Highway 275 and a light of a different kind came on for Freeman. He bought the property in January 2023.

“When that happened, I just knew it,” he said. “I just knew that was the right piece of ground and the right time to do it.”

His team dug a lake, using the excavated dirt to build roads. They laid extensive underground

wiring and worked with Omaha Public Power District to install transformers. With infrastructure in place, Freeman’s first design priority was the Enchanted Forest.

“I just knew … I wanted to have butterflies everywhere,” he said. “Over-the-top, largerthan-life things to see.”

The design evolved organically. Since the land had been agricultural, the company added farm elements. Then came Candy Cane Lane, Dino Land and a patriotic section. Freeman originally wanted a 150-foot Christmas tree — which would have been the tallest in the United States — but FAA regulations led him to the 35-foot present stack instead.

Last November, Freeman began finalizing designs and placing orders. He ordered six shipping containers, each 52 feet long, packed with custom displays.

Then the tariffs hit.

The crisis

In spring 2024, the Trump administration stacked an 84% tariff on top of a 61% tariff on Chinese imports.

“There was literally a pause, a halt on everything, including our stuff,” Freeman said. The price increase affected his business, and his dream, but Freeman was not going to stand by.

He called the White House and stayed on the line for more than 30 minutes.

“I’m just gonna let you know I’ve been in my business 35 years,” Freeman said he ultimately got to say. “This will be my last year in business. I won’t be doing Christmas lights anymore at 145%.”

The tariffs eventually dropped to 30% and Freeman negotiated a three-way split of the additional cost. To meet ChristmasLand’s opening deadline, he paid extra to have three containers trucked directly from Long Beach, Calif. The final two containers arrived in the last two weeks before opening.

Even after the displays arrived, Freeman faced another problem: scale. He set up pieces, stepped back and realized they looked smaller in the open landscape. Out of 800 total pieces, Freeman remade 150 because they didn’t meet his standard.

“I wanted people to come through and say, I haven’t seen anything like that before,” he said. “It’s probably not one of those things you’re looking for if you were to lay this out as a business plan. It’s been my dream. So I spent probably more on this than what I should.”

He paused.

“I think it’s gonna pay off, but that wasn’t my initial outset,” he said. “It was just to see all those people come through (opening night) and see the looks on their faces.”

TRAVIS FREEMAN’S 35-YEAR DREAM LIGHTS UP THE HEARTLAND

From designing and building the Tree of Lights to offering part of the proceeds from his new ChistmasLand drivethru to help our local programs, (Travis’) level of personal investment in our efforts to serve those in need is nothing short of amazing.

The experience is audial, as well as visual.

- JEFF BECKMAN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, THE SALVATION ARMY

“We helped construct the bed of music you hear on his low-power FM signal 95.5 which covers his property. We just picked some of the top songs from some of the biggest genres. Then, we inserted a voiceover to reinforce what we are and where the proceeds were going. A portion of proceeds benefit the Salvation Army of Omaha. That partnership is personal for Freeman.

His friend and mentor Mike Simmonds got him involved with the Salvation Army 24 years ago. Freeman has helped in a variety of ways, including delivering Thanksgiving meals with his kids. He recognized the impact when his son saw a familiar gas station employee receiving food assistance.

“When you see it like that, you know your money is staying here and helping the people here,” Freeman said.

In addition, he has attended graduation ceremonies for his own employees who completed Salvation Army addiction treatment programs.

“The Salvation Army barely has to ask, and he’s right there,” said Combs, who has served on the organization’s board and marketing committee. “He does so much for the community. I’ve been involved for the same amount of time and know firsthand what he has done.”

Freeman became so involved with this organization that, 20 years ago, Brite Ideas built the 75-foot metal Tree of Lights at 90th and Dodge streets. Now, his goal is to have 25,000 cars through ChristmasLand this season as every ticket generates revenue for the Salvation Army.

ChristmasLand is Phase 1 and Freeman already has Phase 2 mapped out: a venue for weddings and corporate events overlooking the lake with tiny homes available through Airbnb. But for now, every car that passes through the lighting display, every visitor who said “Amazing,” validated 35 years of work.

“Everybody has these memories or traditions of going through a Christmas drive-through at some point somewhere in their life,” Freeman said.

Now they’ll have a new memory, built on 70 acres of former cornfield by someone who never forgot what it felt like to be a kid and the sight of upside-down tomato cages wrapped in lights.

Sunny Days Ahead for M&A Activity

LOCAL EXPERTS BUOYED BY ANTICIPATED INTEREST CUTS, BUYER OPTIMISM

We are still seeing a gap between sellers’ expectations of price (based on pandemic/boom valuations) and buyers’ willingness to pay what buyers perceive as over-priced values.
- STACEY SHADDEN, ATTORNEY, BUSINESS AND CORPORATE PRACTICE GROUP CO-CHAIR, MCGRATH NORTH

Bolstered by lower interest rates, more favorable financing terms are poised to characterize the M&A landscape in 2026, according to local professionals. In the face of change, some characteristics associated with acquiring or merging with another business remain the same.

McGrath North’s Stacey Shadden said deal structure is an initial and key consideration for both parties.

“Early on in the process, each party should obtain tax and legal advisers to understand the pros and cons of various deal structures,” said Shadden, an attorney and business and corporate practice group co-chair.

Initially, companies must determine whether they are a good fit and what synergies might exist between them.

“Whether owners are combining with another company or selling, there may be cultural, operational or financial differences in how each company is run that could create future hurdles,” she said. “Price is always another driving factor early on that can kill a transaction. If a company is considering merging with another company or selling, obtaining a business valuation from a reputable provider gives a

company evidence to back up the asking price.”

Owners intending to generate cash flow might consider an “add-on” acquisition, finding a company with synergistic value that complements the existing business.

“Here, if the owner is staying on to be an active part in operating the company, the owner may consider various forms of purchase price considerations that compensate based on growth; for example, retaining equity or an earnout based on financial growth of the company,” Shadden said. “An owner who is retiring may have different priorities: wanting a full exit, with 100% cash payment now.”

Shadden also referred to specific timelines retiring owners may have for an exit, which drives more focus on personal tax consequences as they plan their retirement.

Results Business Advisors President Evan Meester also referred to how both strategic purchasers aiming for integration and long-term ownership and financial buyers concentrating on cost efficiencies, with plans to divest within five to seven years, frequently retain existing employees due to labor market constraints.

“Preserving confidentiality throughout the transaction is essential to mitigate risks of losing staff, customers, vendors and other stakeholders,” Meester said.

“It is vital to conduct a rigorous evaluation of a potential buyer’s financial health and relevant experience, as selecting an unsuitable buyer can lead to adverse consequences.”

He said comprehensive due diligence following acceptance of an offer should include analysis of customer concentration, key personnel, owner participation, financial records and supplier relationships.

Sellers

interested in equity buyers must assess their willingness to relinquish control. Many private equity firms seek ownership stakes of 51% or more.

- EVAN MEESTER, PRESIDENT, RESULTS BUSINESS ADVISORS

“Sellers interested in equity buyers must assess their willingness to relinquish control,” Meester said.

“Many private equity firms seek ownership

stakes of 51% or more, resulting in the seller ceding control over the company. This can lead to challenges if disagreements arise, potentially culminating in the seller being bought out entirely.”

When buyers with a controlling interest lack sufficient financial strength or operational expertise, Meester said the business may suffer and the original owner may have limited recourse.

“Alternatively, partnering with a silent investor seeking a minority stake (49% or less) allows the seller to retain control and mitigates much of this risk; however, such arrangements often do not align with sellers wishing to reduce their involvement, as retaining majority ownership generally requires continued active participation,” he said.

Plan now

Lutz’s Aimee Werner said business owners planning to retire may prioritize straightforward deal structures with full upfront proceeds and minimal complexity, avoiding rolled equity or contingent payments.

“In contrast, an owner seeking to generate ongoing cash flow may be more open to exploring varied transaction structures that balance risk and reward to maximize long-term value,” said Werner, M&A director. “While motivations differ, a thorough analysis of both financial and strategic factors remains critical to achieving the best outcome.”

Werner also noted how business owners often wait for a phone call or offer before planning a transaction.

“This results in loss of value or can even kill a deal due to inadequate preparation,”

she said. “Whether you are considering a transaction in the near future or years down the road, ensuring your financials are in order, understanding valuation drivers and proactively planning will set you up to maximize value and command a premium valuation on a future transaction.”

Also, owners who go into a transaction unprepared may miss out on favorable terms or face extended due diligence.

Koley Jessen’s Eric Oxley said valuation considerations and execution risks are very important when determining who to consider as part of a sale or merger.

“But we have found that the real test, long term, as to whether a business owner views the deal as successful is whether it was a good or bad cultural fit,” said Oxley, chair of M&A practice.

Oxley emphasized that, regardless of exit strategy or long-term goals, ensuring peak performance during a transaction is critical.

“Consistently meeting or surpassing budget targets is the strongest indicator of a successful deal closure,” he said. “A robust upward trajectory signals a solid foundation and significant growth potential. Conversely, deals often fail due to underperformance or distractions that cause the owner or management team to lose focus during the transaction process.”

Thoroughly assess all available succession and transition strategies.

“Potential alternatives to traditional sales or mergers include a partial or complete sale to an employee stock ownership plan, debt-financed transactions, minority or majority recapitalizations or a management buyout,” he said.

M&A outlook

In 2026, McGrath North expects to see more buyers in the market, making it a good opportunity to sell, Shadden said.

“However, we are still seeing a gap between sellers’ expectations of price (based on pandemic/boom valuations) and buyers’ willingness to pay what buyers perceive as overpriced values,” she said. “Both sellers and buyers will have to continue to be creative to get deals done, utilizing tools like earnouts, contingent payments, rollover equity options and other nontraditional payment structures to bridge gaps in valuations.”

Shadden said 2026 is a good time for business owners to meet with their tax advisors to help predict whether it is the right time to sell before tax policy changes go into effect.

Given the recent history of small business M&A, evidence continues to show it will be a seller’s market in 2026, Meester said.

“With a new Fed chair being announced next year, lower interest rates will certainly be on the horizon,” he said. “Buyer optimism was a little flat for 2025 and will likely be higher in 2026, which equals more deals being done at higher prices or with more

favorable seller terms.”

- AIMEE WERNER, M&A DIRECTOR, LUTZ

Buoyed by anticipated interest rate cuts and improved financing conditions, M&A activity is expected to accelerate next year, Werner said.

“Additionally, private equity firms are holding record levels of (cash) and are expected to intensify direct outreach to business owners to identify acquisition opportunities,” she said. “This dynamic could create favorable conditions for sellers considering a transaction.”

When asked about what’s ahead for 2026, Oxley said investors and buyers have adopted a more disciplined approach to evaluating, pricing and executing M&A transactions in recent years.

“From 2020 to 2022, robust competition for deals allowed sellers to dominate transaction processes and dictate terms,” he said. “Since 2023, however, the balance has shifted, with buyers and investors gaining greater leverage.”

Oxley said this shift has extended deal timelines and introduced more complex terms.

“While competition for deals is expected to remain strong in 2026, longer timelines and increased deal complexity are likely to persist for the foreseeable future,” he said.

From 2020 to 2022, robust competition for deals allowed sellers to dominate transaction processes and dictate terms. Since 2023, however, the balance has shifted, with buyers and investors gaining greater leverage.
