HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:

HIGHLIGHT of the week Chamber Eyes the Future

DELOITTE EXPERTS SHARE ECONOMIC, TECH INSIGHTS AT LUNCHEON

The Greater Omaha Chamber held its Economic Outlook luncheon Nov. 18 at Embassy Suites in downtown Omaha. The event highlighted presentations that explore the trends redefining the economy, technology and the future of work. Deloitte leaders Ira Kalish, Ph.D., the company’s chief global economist, and Mike Bechtel, its chief futurist, shared insights on global innovation and the forces transforming business.

Kalish is known for analyzing macroeconomic trends, global risk and consumer markets. He’s the author of Deloitte’s Weekly Global Economic Update and serves on the World Economic Forum’s Community of Chief Economists. He warned of depleting resources due to immigration and slow growth as well as an impending recession due to policies being imposed by the current administration.

Bechtel leads Deloitte’s team on novel and exponential technologies shaping the future of business. He’s a former venture investor and startup CTO and a professor of corporate innovation at Notre Dame. Bechtel explained how AI is bringing about changes in the workforce and how this latest wave of technology is not going to replace people but will instead allow people to move into different jobs. He also noted that AI is going to allow people to be more creative and entrepreneurial.

TOP THINGS TO KNOW

Tyson Foods to close Lexington beef plant

Tyson Foods announced Nov. 21 that it was closing its beef processing facility in Lexington, Nebraska, and increasing production at other beef facilities across its network. The company said in a media release that this plant closure and a reduction in force/shift consolidation at its Amarillo, Texas, plant will “rightsize its beef business and position it for long-term success.” Tyson Foods did not specify a closing date but said it will assist affected employees with relocation benefits and referring them to open positions at other locations. The Lexington plant employs about 2,700 people.

Professional soccer stadium agreement announced

Union Omaha Soccer, in partnership with the City of Omaha, has announced an agreement for the development of a professional soccer stadium and mixed-use district in north downtown Omaha. According to a media release issued by Union Omaha, if the agreement is approved a groundbreaking would take place next year and the stadium would open in 2028.

The project site is on largely unused land north of Cuming Street currently owned by Union Pacific Railroad, which is now in the process of selling it to the City of Omaha. The new stadium will house the professional soccer team and anchor a 20-acre district of retail, dining, housing and green space, enhancing an evolving area that includes Hot Shops Art Center and Millwork Commons.

OPPD presents preliminary 2026 operating plan

Omaha Public Power District’s preliminary 2026 corporate operating plan aims to keep costs down for customers despite inflationary pressures, increased regulatory requirements and increasing energy demand, the utility said in a media release following the OPPD Board of Directors all-committees meeting on Nov. 18.

The $2.98 billion budget proposal recommends a 6.3% rate increase averaged across all customer classes. This includes a 5.8% general rate increase and a 0.5% increase to the Fuel and Purchased Power Adjustment, a line item on customer bills that addresses changing fuel and purchased power costs outside of the utility’s control. Starting Jan. 1 — pending board approval in December — residential customers can expect to see a 6% increase, bringing up the average bill of $115 to about $122; commercial customers can expect to see a 3.7% average increase, and industrial customers can expect to see an average increase of 8.9%.

Westlake Ace Hardware to open in Shadow Lake Towne Center

Construction has begun on a Westlake Ace Hardware store in Shadow Lake Towne Center in Papillion. The store will be located on the northwest side of the development in the 18,000-square-foot space formerly occupied by Best Buy, which closed in March 2024. A Barnes & Noble store opened in the adjacent space in April.

The Shadow Lake Westlake Ace store will be the first hardware store in Papillion since Papillion Hardware near the city’s downtown closed in 2013. The closest existing Westlake Ace Hardware stores are in Ralston and Bellevue.

Best Places to Shop on Black Friday report

Personal-finance company WalletHub released its Best Places to Shop on Black Friday in 2025 report last week, indicating that the overall average discount for Black Friday is 37%. The computers and phones category showed the biggest average discounted rate for items at 20.2% while the consumer packaged goods category was smallest at 2.8%. Ranked by retailer, JCPenney was first at 74.08%; other top-ten retailers were Belk (72.42%), Kohl’s (45.39%), Macy’s (44.46%), The Home Depot (35.63%), BJ’s Wholesale Club (31.26%), Amazon (29.63%), Target (29.36%), Newegg (28.80%) and Best Buy (28.58%). JCPenney, Kohl’s, The Home Depot, Target and Best Buy have brick-and-mortar stores in the local area. Amazon and Newegg are online-only retailers. The full report and each retailer’s rank in all product categories are available at wallethub.com.

Hansen-Mueller announces Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Omaha-based Hansen-Mueller Co. — which operates grain elevators, port terminals, oats processing facilities and grain trading offices across the Midwest and parts of the southern U.S. — announced in a media release that the company will restructure its organization and seek a buyer for its assets. In October, the Nebraska Public Service Commission temporarily suspended the company’s grain license after investigating a complaint that Hansen-Mueller had failed to pay 38 Nebraska producers nearly $2 million for grain purchased from August 2024 to October 2025. The commission had restored Hansen-Mueller’s grain-dealing license in November and dismissed the complaint after receiving assurance that the debts in question were paid. HansenMueller’s agreement with the commission obligates the company to pay its other outstanding debts to Nebraska grain dealers and warehouses by Feb. 27, 2026.

UNL entrepreneurship program ranked No. 35

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln was 35th in Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine’s Top 50 Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Programs list for 2025. The ranking is up seven spots from the prior list and determined by comprehensive survey conducted by the Princeton Review this summer that involved data collected from nearly 300 schools in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe. Criteria considered schools’ entrepreneurship programs, faculty, student experiences and alumni success using more than 40 data points. Nebraska remains the top-ranked university in the state and No. 10 in the Midwest.

Lincoln’s East Park Plaza shopping center sold

On Nov. 20, Mid-America Real Estate Corp. announced that it has arranged the sale of East Park Plaza, a 214,029-square-foot shopping center located at 220 N. 66th Street across from the Gateway Mall in Lincoln, from Starwood Property Trust to Broad Reach Retail Partners. A freestanding Russ’s Market anchors the property, with other tenants including Famous Footwear and Marcus Theatres. Broad Reach, located in Maryland, is known for acquiring, redeveloping and leasing grocery-anchored shopping centers. It acquired Baker Square Shopping Center in Omaha in 2019.

Northwest Bank

Investing in Commitment

COMMUNITY BANK INVESTS IN PEOPLE OVER BRICK AND MORTAR

Northwest Bank Regional President Clay Baker went into banking simply because he wanted stability. His first job, in fact, was in collections at Ford Motor Credit Company.

“There wasn’t anything sexy about my career path,” Baker said. “For me, it was a matter of just having a stable lifestyle.”

What Baker discovered during years of working his way from collections through management rotations in Sacramento and Dallas, then into traditional banking at Wells Fargo and finally to Northwest Bank 16 years ago, was something deeper: a profound respect for the entrepreneurs he serves.

“I’m really in awe when it comes to people like (entrepreneurs),” Baker said. “I’m not wired that way. It’s why I work for somebody else. I don’t have that kind of risk tolerance.”

That humility shapes how Baker approaches small business lending. Unlike his

previous experience at big banks, Northwest Bank allows him the flexibility to craft creative solutions for businesses that don’t fit standardized lending boxes.

The flexibility factor

Baker recently worked with a business owner who’d been operating for three years. She had modest equity but strong cash flow and consistent profitability. At a large bank, the standard response would be to recommend an SBA loan with higher fees and interest rates.

“Big banks often don’t get creative,” Baker said. “They’re so big, it’s just the way they have to do it. They can’t have people in each market making different decisions.”

Instead, Baker structured a conventional loan with terms slightly beyond standard policy, stretching the repayment period from five to seven years based on the

“I’m really in awe when it comes to people like (entrepreneurs). I’m not wired that way. It’s why I work for somebody else.

strength of the client’s business performance.

“If I was at a big bank, I wouldn’t have the ability to do that,” Baker said. “I know that because I did work at a big bank prior to coming here.”

When businesses struggle, Northwest Bank’s approach diverges from large institutional lenders. Northwest Bank can get creative early, restructuring debt or taking more time to work through problems.

“For a big national bank, a customer in Omaha, Nebraska, that has a $350,000 loan, in the grand scheme of their balance sheet and income statement, it’s a drop of water in the ocean,” Baker said. “They don’t have the time, they don’t have the number of employees to help that customer work through that problem over an extended period of time.”

Investing in people

Baker’s excitement about Northwest Bank’s future centers on a counterintuitive strategy: consolidating from three Omaha locations to one centrally located facility while planning to grow.

“We had to come to grips with where we believe banking is going to be in the future,” Baker said, noting the answer the company came to was to invest in people, not brick and mortar. He estimated the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift away from branch banking which is why Northwest Bank is building one facility designed to accommodate significant staff growth.

“Rather than tie that capital up in brick and mortar, we invest in hiring more people,” Baker said.

The new building’s top floor is designed for future expansion, with plans to eventually fill the entire facility with Northwest Bank team members focused on outreach rather than waiting for customers to walk through the door. Baker said no positions in Omaha will be eliminated as a result of this change.

- CLAY BAKER, REGIONAL PRESIDENT, NORTHWEST BANK

The lifeblood of community

What energizes Baker after decades in banking is being part of the entrepreneurial journey.

“Small businesses are really the lifeblood of our communities,” Baker said. “Everything good has a start. Everything that turns into something big has a starting place, and that starting place is riddled with incredible stories of somebody having faith and belief in themselves and their ideas.”

He points to Omaha businesses that started with college kids working from their parents’ basements, got a bank’s support, and grew into billion-dollar enterprises employing hundreds.

“Those kind of people deserve our utmost respect,” Baker said. “It takes a special person to say, ‘You know what, I’m willing to lose it all for this idea that I have.’”

Baker describes Northwest Bank’s philosophy in five words: “Commitment you can bank on.”

“Commitment means that when things get a little tough, we don’t run for the door,” he said. “We have countless examples of times where we’ve helped people work through difficult situations, and they’re incredibly successful businesses today.”

For Baker, that commitment — to flexibility, to relationships, to sticking with customers through challenges — makes all the difference between a transaction and a partnership.

Santa Claus, the Grinch and Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer have hung out year-round at Omaha’s Tannenbaum Christmas Shop for the past 40 years, giving people a consistent taste of the holidays in the Old Market.

Home to hundreds of ornaments and decorations, Tannenbaum has become an anchor store in the Old Market. While open yearround, the holiday season ramps up in May and runs through December, said Jeff Jorgensen, co-owner. He took over the company in 1995.

“I’m not sure I would have had the foresight to open up a Christmas shop in the Old Market,” Jorgensen said. “They (previous owners) loved Christmas, and I do, too, but it’s really been the growth of the Old Market that, I think, has enabled us to continue and succeed. The Old Market was still pretty successful in 1995 when we bought the business, but it has just grown by leaps and bounds since then.”

Christmas Central

Tannenbaum attracts customers from all over the world.

“Tannenbaum certainly contributes to the Old Market being a place that people want to visit,” Jorgensen said. “Local people, but also — and just as importantly, through most of the year — visitors to Omaha. They could be family members of people who live here, but also people who are here for events at the Orpheum or possibly even for a convention. The whole Old Market really becomes a destination for them while they are here.”

Celebrating 40 years as an Old Market business is a major achievement, he said. With the Old Market as a shopping and entertainment district for only a little more than 50 years, being

one of the longer-lasting businesses in the area makes him proud, Jorgensen said.

Jorgensen and his business partner, Joe Montello, run the southeast corner of 10th and Howard streets: Tannenbaum; Old Market Candy Shop, which turns 50 in 2026; Dolci ice cream shop, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2025; and Old Market Sundries.

Perfect gifts

Providing the ornaments, decorations and souvenirs people want has been key to Tannenbaum’s success, Jorgensen said.

“You need to beware of things that come in the back door and aren’t going out the front door, and make the changes necessary so that you can continue bringing new things in the back door that people are wanting,” he said. “I think it’s like buying low and selling high with stocks.”

Keep an eye open

Jorgensen’s advice to his younger self would be to always look for an existing business in which to invest, because starting new ventures can be challenging.

“The two businesses that we started from scratch (Dolci and Old Market Sundries) were the hardest to start,” Jorgensen said. “So, if you find an existing business that seems to have a good foundation, and maybe you think it could be more successful, you might be right by bringing another pair of eyes to it. But don’t feel like just because a business is there and it’s not doing everything you want it to do, that it isn’t worth looking at.”

Spielbound Board Game Cafe

Building a Community

MICHAUD’S GAME NIGHTS TURN INTO A RETAIL STORE

While playing Scrabble or Monopoly during the holidays is a tradition for many in the Omaha metro area, there are thousands of other board games available these days.

Kaleb Michaud understands this. His personal collection includes over 2,000 games, and his weekly game nights drew dozens of people in the 2010s. That plethora led to the opening of Spielbound in Midtown Crossing.

“The inspiration came when there just wasn’t enough space in my house for the people coming to the game nights,” said Michaud, who noted his favorite board game is The Castles of Burgundy. “We had 50 to 60 people in my house. As a single guy, my house was not that big, and every nook and cranny was being filled and (game night) was getting more popular.”

German design tribute

Michaud and Scott O’Dell opened Spielbound in 2017. They considered hundreds of names for the business.

“I wanted to have something that reflected gratitude toward the German game designers who really brought the modern board game into the heyday that it’s in now,” Michaud said.

The retail side of this business saved Spielbound during the COVID-19 shutdown, Michaud said. He and his business partner spent days on end fulfilling retail orders, although not being able to get together nearly derailed the social side.

“I think we had to pivot, otherwise we were going to go out of business,” he said. “We had invested so much in Spielbound. We had to lay off everybody except for two or three people, and we pivoted to

selling board games online.”

Community center

Spielbound, the gaming venue, is a nonprofit organization, and the for-profit coffee shop sells retail games. The retail selection inside Spielbound includes everything from games for two players, to games revolving around a story, to those that take several hours to play.

Almost nine years after opening, Michaud said Spielbound continues to survive while other gaming cafes aren’t as fortunate.

“There have been several in Nebraska since we started, but (many) of them have gone out of business,” Michaud said.

He also noted that the community of gaming enthusiasts who not only purchase their games, but come to play on a regular basis, are a large part of their success.

“We are only here because of the community — people who love and want to come here,” he said. “Building up our volunteer base, (those) who want to teach the games and people who help out and help curate the games in the library … This isn’t going to make us rich. It’s making us happy.”

‘Trust and verify’

Michaud’s advice about owning a business is simple.

“I think it’s more of making sure to take advantage of your strongest skills early and often,” Michaud said. “Trust and verify with others. I think a lot of issues we may have had early on were about just not knowing how this space would work … as opposed to thinking about what makes the most sense for who we want to be.”

FAMILY BUSINESS STILL BETS ON COMMUNITY BUY local

The Mangelsen Legacy

Mangelsen’s store gives away free popcorn to customers every day, a gesture that costs money instead of makes it. But they give it anyway, because popcorn — along with a sprawling 37,000-square-foot store filled with everything from Halloween props to quilting materials to Christmas ornaments — creates something Amazon can’t deliver.

“It’s the customer experience,” Marla Mangelsen said.

That commitment to experience over efficiency defines how the Mangelsen family has survived 65 years in an industry that’s lost countless independent retailers. But for David A., Marla and Matt Mangelsen, along with their father David M., the fight isn’t just about their own business. It’s about preserving an entire ecosystem of local retailers that makes Omaha distinct.

“It’s not just us, it’s all small businesses,” Matt said.

The economics of staying local

The Mangelsens cite specific numbers: About 67% to 72% of money spent at a local business stays in the community. At a national chain, that number drops to around 30%.

“It’s sad that a lot of these stores are going out of business, the small independent stores,” Matt said. “Not just craft stores: any type of store, any type of boutique store, whether it be a scrapbooking store, a model store, or a guitar shop. And restaurants, we’ve lost a lot of family restaurants to national chains.”

Mangelsen’s itself started from a franchise. In the 1970s, their grandfather Harold

converted a Ben Franklin franchise into Mangelsen’s, an independent variety store. Elsewhere in the nation, stores such as Michael’s and Hobby Lobby were creating places that catered to people spending their free time creating knitted items, painting, or woodworking.

But where Michaels expanded into a national chain, the Mangelsens stayed rooted in Omaha, building something that can’t be franchised: decades of relationships, traditions and memories specific to this community.

“These are local cultural companies for that community,” Matt said. “And then what happens is they do their going-out-of-business sale and people flock to it and say, ‘Man, I haven’t been in here for 20 years. I wonder why they went out of business.’”

Running without corporate structure

The four Mangelsens run the business together, each managing different aspects — what Matt calls their “swim lanes.”

“We’re not corporate,” Matt said. “We’re not structured like a corporate.”

That shows up in how they treat employees. Mangelsen’s offers flexibility larger retailers can’t provide: time off when needed, accommodation for family emergencies, genuine knowledge of employees’ personal lives.

“We’ve been told we’ve had people over the 65 years leave the company, go do something else, only to come back,” Matt said. “They had it pretty good here because they learn the flexibility and that we understand them.”

Before COVID-19, Mangelsen’s was open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week. The

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL

We have a lot of people come in and say, ‘I remember coming in here when I was 8 years old. My parents brought me in here.

pandemic gave them permission to reconsider.

“We actually told customers we can’t do those hours anymore,” Matt said. “We have family that we want to spend time with. Our employees want to spend time with family. So, we shortened up our hours. It kind of set the tone that we are just a family store.”

Competing in the convenience economy

The Mangelsens acknowledge the reality they’re up against. All three siblings shop online themselves.

“I don’t know of anybody that doesn’t shop online, but I think it’s to the degree in which you do,” Matt said.

Experiences can’t be replicated by clicking a button. Their Halloween department creates an atmosphere that no warehouse can duplicate.

“We have a lot of people come in and say, ‘I remember coming in here when I was 8 years old. My parents brought me in here,’” Matt said. “And then they’ve got their kid with them and they’re bringing them in and they’re looking at all the Halloween stuff. It’s a wholly different atmosphere.”

The same principle applies to the year-round Christmas shop.

“Grandma comes in with them and says, ‘Pick out your ornament,’ and they do it every year,” Matt said.

Investing in experience

The Mangelsens continue making investments that don’t obviously drive revenue. Free popcorn and apple cider. The annual Witches Tea that draws hundreds of families to their parking lot. Twenty-five years of decorating the Durham Museum’s Christmas tree, the Orpheum and the Playhouse.

They’ve also added printing capabilities in the last five years. Marla has changed product lines to appeal to younger customers.

“One department will pick up a fad and that’ll bring a new group in,” Marla said. “And then that fad will end and usually another fad picks up somewhere else.”

That constant adaptation is how they’ve survived 65 years.

“The changes are fluid,” Matt said. “For me to give you a five-year plan would be very hard because I think we’re more fluid than that.”

Although change is constant, the benefit of Mangelsen’s is being able to feel a piece of silk for a handmade wedding gown, or working directly with an employee to perfectly frame a cherished family photo.

But the real benefit is time and trust built over generations, something that can’t be purchased or manufactured.

The next gen

“As we look to the next five years, we’re excited about how Mangelsen’s can continue to grow alongside our community,” Marla said. “Retail keeps changing fast, but our goal stays the same: create a place where people come together, make memories, and feel at home.”

Matt has three children: Cora, Calvin and Carina, ages 14, 12 and 7. They talk about wanting to work at Mangelsen’s, but they also talk about becoming teachers, veterinarians, engineers.

The Mangelsen family is emphatic about supporting local businesses.

- MATT MANGELSEN

“It’s not just us, it’s all small businesses that need support,” Matt emphasized. The Mangelsens are making an economic and cultural argument: that a community defined by chains and online retailers loses something essential — the local knowledge, the multigenerational relationships, the traditions rooted in specific places.

BUY local

Small but Mighty KEEPING CASH IN LOCAL ECONOMY HAS BROAD

COMMUNITY IMPACTS

Out of every dollar you spend locally, a sizable portion of the taxes you pay goes back to your community. If we want to continue to be proud of those civic assets, it’s important to invest and spend locally.
- ALEC GORYNSKI, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER

Shopping can feel like money evaporating invisibly into a faraway realm. But shopping at local businesses produces a visible return on investment that consists of more than just a purchased product. Each purchase a consumer makes represents a decision as to where funds are placed in the economic system.

‘Virtuous cycle’

Alec Gorynski, senior vice president of economic development for the Greater Omaha Chamber, said local businesses contribute to a region’s economy in a more direct manner than larger chains. These businesses employ local workers and often offer competitive wages to stay current with larger, big-box competition, Gorynski said.

The Omaha metro area is home to 2,618 retail/trade establishments and 2,291 businesses in the accommodations and food service sector, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Of the 540,000 employees in the area, roughly 55,000 of those work in the retail industry and another 40,000 of those employees work in food service of some sort. Gorynski said that just those two sectors account for 20% of local employment.

While not every business is a member of the Greater Omaha Chamber, about 80% of the chamber’s members employ 50 people or less, which is a good indication of the portion of the local economy made up of smaller businesses providing employment to about a fifth of the local workforce.

“It’s this kind of virtuous cycle: when you spend local, it just tends to stay in the local economy, whereas if you’re buying from Amazon, for example, that money leaves our economy, never to be seen again,” Gorynski said.

Tax dollars remaining in the local economy have a drastic impact on funding for things

that make the community desirable, including thriving local school districts and quality-of-life amenities.

“Out of every dollar you spend locally, a sizable portion of the taxes you pay goes back to your community,” he said. “If we want to continue to be proud of those civic assets, it’s important to invest and spend locally.”

Holiday economics

The National Retail Federation reports that it expects retail sales in November and December to grow between 3.7% and 4.2% over 2024, translating to total spending between $1.01 trillion and $1.02 trillion contrary to the national sentiment regarding the economy.

Gorynski expects local consumer spending to remain stable throughout the holiday season. Despite national economic concerns, key indicators such as low unemployment signal a strong local economy.

“Our economy in Omaha is quite resilient, partly due to its diversity across industries like manufacturing, finance, insurance and health care,” Gorynski said. “That resilience supports steady growth in retail, which saw nearly a 50% increase in GDP from 2020 to 2024.”

Even in a seemingly unstable economy with prices increasing on many items, small business owner Deanna Albertson who runs a local wine store, Vino Mas, said consumers aren’t willing to spend as much per bottle as they have in the past. To combat that, Vino Mas offers a wide selection of wines at a lower price point of $20.

Marla Mangelsen, co-owner of Mangelsen’s, also stays in tune with market demand and said her team’s approach is always evolving based on what products are current and relevant. Custom baking and party planning are two areas Mangelson’s customers continue to gravitate toward.

We’re very optimistic about this year’s holiday season. More shoppers are choosing to buy local, and we believe this year will be even stronger than the last.

“We’re very optimistic about this year’s holiday season,” Mangelsen said. “More shoppers are choosing to buy local and we believe this year will be even stronger than the last.”

During the holidays Albertson’s team brings in extra inventory, including wine accessories and gifts. She also brings on more staff to handle holiday baskets, corporate deliveries and shipments.

“We have a fantastic team and everyone is always willing to put more time in to make sure customers are taken care of,” Albertson said. “Shopping and supporting local during the holidays and throughout the year helps communities to thrive.”

Gorynski noted that there are also holiday pop-up markets and events throughout the season that make shopping local even more accessible, but local e-commerce is also a viable option.

“Many of our local shops have also become really sophisticated with respect to e-commerce,” Gorynski said. “It may require a shopper to go to a website and search for what they’re looking for, but many can still deliver that product to your doorstep in a day or two.”

The local experience

Online retailers can deliver a lot to doorsteps, but experiences don’t come in boxes. Albertson said the experience of her store can bring a community together over a glass of wine.

- MARLA MANGELSEN, CO-OWNER, MANGELSEN’S

“We cater to the everyday drinker and the connoisseur,” Albertson said. “We hold weekly tastings, live music and offer a wine club. At Vino Mas you can drink, shop and experience the world of wine on your own or with friends and create lasting memories.”

Coincidentally, Vino Mas’s anniversary falls near Small Business Saturday each year, so to celebrate, the store hosts a free tasting event for the community. The store also often hosts tasting fundraisers which support local nonprofits and local animal rescue groups throughout the year.

“I fully believe that the backbone of a city is small businesses that contribute to the local community,” Albertson said. “It’s the local businesses that work within the community, support local nonprofits, employ local people and pay local taxes.”

Mangelsen said the store she co-owns with her father and siblings continues to focus on providing a unique atmosphere by offering specialty services such as customized Christmas ornaments and workshops in their in-store classroom.

“Mangelsen’s is more than just a store, it’s an experience,” she said. “Our customers come not only to shop but to connect, create and celebrate.”

Mangelsen’s also works with nonprofits.

Small but Mighty

KEEPING CASH IN LOCAL ECONOMY HAS BROAD COMMUNITY IMPACTS

I fully believe that the backbone of a city is small businesses that contribute to the local community. It’s the local businesses that work within the community, support local nonprofits, employ local people and pay local taxes.

“Omaha has a strong culture of philanthropy and it’s not limited to any one income or social status,” Gorynski said. “Everyone seems to share in the community giving spirit.”

Homegrown creativity

Local businesses are also fueling creativity and artistic entrepreneurship. In Benson, what began as a one-off event bringing artists together to sell their products has grown into a fullfledged nonprofit that has helped revitalize an entire neighborhood.

“Benson has really become a great destination for creatives, artists and free thinkers,” said John-Paul Gurnett, communications and creative director for BFF Omaha. “Before we started,

Benson was here; it’s been around forever, but around 2012, a bunch of artists got together and realized that we have some really great talent here in Benson. What if we highlighted it and celebrated it?”

BFF Omaha, originally Benson First Friday, is housed in one of the area’s many revitalized buildings. The group runs gallery spaces and provides a variety of educational and creative programming, including the First Friday event that is now in its 14th year. Gurnett said the group recently hosted its first “Handmade Parade,” parading down alleys to feature handmade creations and showcase local talent.

The eclectic Benson neighborhood is now a Creative District as designated by the Nebraska Arts Council, and other neighborhoods have followed suit. As more neighborhoods have gained this status, there is more opportunity to provide pathways for local artists’ careers.

“We create all these entry points for artists, whether it’s a gallery, a window display or a stage in one of the bars,” Gurnett said. “We’ve seen so many careers blossom. You sell your first painting and that’s enough to drive you to sell more. We’re really creating an economy of people who are creating, living and thriving, and it’s thanks to the support of the community and their neighbors.”

END-OF-YEAR giving

Nonprofits Need Nurturing END-OF-YEAR GIVING IMPACTS ASSISTANCE

As 2025 draws to a close, nonprofit organizations across the Omaha metro face unprecedented challenges. Many organizations are experiencing a surge in demand for services while simultaneously dealing with economic pressures of inflation, making it difficult to operate at the same capacity. From the January funding freeze to the November government shutdown, nonprofits have seen a reduction in funds and an increase in people asking for their services.

The strain spans diverse sectors, from housing and food security to arts and education. Local nonprofits report sustained pressure to serve growing numbers of community members while navigating budget constraints that affect both operational funding and program delivery.

One way to help is to participate in Giving Tuesday, scheduled for Dec. 2. This annual event offers donors a structured opportunity to support causes that matter to them. The global day of generosity, which follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday, has become a significant fundraising event for charitable organizations worldwide.

Omaha-area residents can participate through ShareOmaha.org, a platform that connects donors with dozens of local nonprofits such as those seen on this and the following pages. The site, accessible at shareomaha.org/ givingtuesdayfornonprofits, streamlines the giving process while ensuring contributions directly benefit local communities.

End-of-year giving provides practical benefits for donors as well. Contributions

made before Dec. 31 qualify for tax deductions on 2025 returns, offering financial incentives that complement the satisfaction of supporting meaningful work. Financial advisors recommend donors consult tax professionals to maximize benefits while ensuring compliance with IRS regulations.

For nonprofits, December giving often determines whether organizations can maintain services through the following year. Many groups rely on fourthquarter donations to bridge budget gaps and fund programs that serve vulnerable populations year-round. The concentrated giving period allows organizations to forecast more accurately and plan strategic initiatives for the coming year.

Beyond monetary donations, many nonprofits welcome in-kind contributions, volunteer time and advocacy support. Some organizations particularly value recurring monthly gifts, which provide predictable revenue streams that enable long-term planning.

As the year ends, community members face countless worthy causes competing for limited charitable dollars. ShareOmaha.org’s comprehensive directory helps donors research organizations, understand their missions and direct support where it aligns with personal values and community priorities.

Whether supporting established institutions or emerging grassroots initiatives, end-ofyear giving represents an opportunity for Omaha residents to invest in the community’s future while meeting immediate needs.

Midlands bankers are giving 2025 mixed grades when it comes to loan productivity and growth but none described the year as below the pass line.

“I would give lending in 2025 an A,” said Nate Keller, vice president and relationship manager with Cornhusker Bank. “There were some difficulties with higher interest rates but, overall, loans grew in 2025. Commercial lending did very

well in 2025 while mortgages struggled with the higher interest rates.

“Many consumers already have very low rates on their homes and they are not willing to move and give up that lower rate. This not only reduced the number of buyers but also the inventory of homes for sale.”

Keith Mesch, chief financial officer with Veridian Credit Union, was slightly more

The diversification of our balance sheet has been a major driver of our success.

reserved in assessing this year’s performance, even though he praised the industry overall for achieving better efficiency through technology.

“I’d give the lending environment in 2025 a solid B,” he said. “Borrowers were cautious about recession risk and sticky inflation. Some segments, like credit cards and auto loans, started showing higher delinquency rates. Those were some of the challenges keeping it from earning an A.

“At the same time, financial institutions used AI to increase efficiency and consistency. Rates moved in the right direction and there was healthy growth in commercial and consumer lending, including auto, home equity and adjustable-rate mortgages.”

National trends hit home

The just-released U.S. Banks Outlook 2026 by Fitch Ratings suggests the year is closing on a whimper, not a shout, and that has analysts lukewarm on what to expect when the calendar turns over. The report gives a neutral outlook for U.S. banks in 2026 while expecting stable core financial metrics and gross domestic product growth of 1.6%.

That prediction hinges on the industry addressing a range of market and operational challenges including how well financial institutions defend margins, diversify income and prepare for increased competition.

Tom Corrigan, president and CEO of ACCESSbank, echoed these challenges as already showing up in the local marketplace.

“The biggest theme in 2025 was the competition for deposits,” he said. “Over the last several years, clients have been paying close attention to where they kept their funds and what kind of return they were earning. That shift put pressure across the industry and required banks to be more intentional in how they attracted and retained deposits.

“For us, that meant stepping forward with several new accounts designed specifically to reward the families and businesses that bank with us. We made strides in building options that brought real value to our clients and strengthened the relationship for the long term.”

Mesch also chimed in on the need for banks and credit unions to discover how to improve margins while still serving customers’ needs, an effort his institution successfully grappled with this year.

“In the first half of the year, many financial institutions had to manage tight margins through a ‘higher-for-longer’ rate environment. This was especially challenging for banks and credit unions with larger portfolios of long-term loans,” he said. “By the end of the year, margins loosened as deposit rates came back down.

“The year also brought some economic uncertainty. At Veridian, we were able to maintain a solid financial performance through constant change with a sharp and responsive Asset Liability Team and a diversified balance sheet keeping our interest rate risk in check.”

“The rapid increase of interest rates made managing spread on pricing for both deposits and loans difficult,” agreed Keller. “There were also additional banking and compliance regulations in 2025 that required attention. Cornhusker Bank was able to adapt to the new regulations while ensuring profitability in a high-interest-rate environment.”

- KEITH MESCH, CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER, VERIDIAN CREDIT UNION

M&A abounds

One element of operations that appeared to have a very good year is mergers and acquisitions. In May, S&P Global reported the level of M&A was on par with 2024 and this month, J.P. Morgan released a report predicting the pace would pick up even more in the new year. This type of growth was readily apparent in the local market as First National Bank of Omaha closed on its purchase of Country Club Bank in Kansas City in October.

“FNBO has had a presence in Kansas since the early 1990s, but this acquisition will triple the size of our branch network and grow our team of talented employees to bring scale, power and superior service to all of Kansas City,” said Nathan Ewert, the company’s senior vice president of banking.

“We’re incredibly excited to join with the Country Club Bank team to expand our branch network into Missouri, increasing FNBO’s total presence to over 120 branches in nine states.”

Ewert described the merger as the primary highlight of FNBO’s “incredibly strong year,” but not the only one. He said the bank continues to keep its eye on the ball in existing markets as well, particularly when it comes to investing in technology to meet customer demands for speed and access while maintaining FNBO’s white glove level of service.

“This acquisition does not change our commitment to Omaha, which has been our home for more than 165 years,” he said. “In 2025, we’ve increased our investment in digital tools and capabilities, delivering feature and function enhancements in both our mobile and web banking environments.

“Our customers continue to express their desire to bank via mobile and web, while knowing that we are just around the corner or a phone call away when they need us. We look to 2026 with a great deal of excitement and enthusiasm, focusing on the success of our customers and investing in the strength of the communities we call home.”

Looking ahead

Assessing the future, Keller said not unlike last year he didn’t see 2026 as one that would be defined by one or two wins but by daily improvement in existing operations.

I would give lending in 2025 an A. There were some difficulties with higher interest rates but overall loans grew.
- NATE KELLER, VICE PRESIDENT, RELATIONSHIP MANAGER, CORNHUSKER BANK

BANKING

A Mixed Bag BANKERS RECOUNT 2025 AS A YEAR OF CHALLENGES, OPPORTUNITY

Acquisition does not change our commitment to Omaha, which has been our home for more than 165 years.

“The bank continues doing what it has always done, which is serving our customers, growing our community and growing our people,” he said. “We continue to see solid growth across the board in our loans, deposits and wealth management areas. All of this growth has provided a slingshot into 2026, which we expect to be another good year for the bank.”

Corrigan said his institution also enjoyed wins in a number of areas and had the awards to prove it. Not the least of these speaks to how the banks treats its workforce, which he called a key operational advantage in the current labor environment.

“From a service standpoint, our teams delivered another exceptional year, earning us a range of recognitions that speak directly to who we are,” he said. “We were voted Best Bank by B2B Omaha for the 12th consecutive year, honored as a Best Bank to Work For for the third year running, and received the Omaha Chamber

Excellence Award for the seventh time.

“To us, these awards represent the consistency, culture and client experience we work toward every day. All in all, 2025 was a year that reinforced our identity and sharpened our vision and we’re heading into 2026 with strength, optimism and a focus on being a local partner our community can count on.”

Mesch also predicted good things in the new year, bolstered by Veridian’s unwavering focus on the fundamentals.

“The diversification of our balance sheet has been a major driver of our success,” he said. “We met several key objectives in growing our branch footprint, constantly improving our digital experience and finding new ways to make every interaction with our members more personalized and efficient. Those achievements will serve our members and communities well, putting us in a strong position for 2026 and beyond.”

Right-Sized. Purpose-Fueled.

PRESENTED BY HORSEPOWER TODAY

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at your inbox at 9 p.m., wondering how you’re supposed to be the visionary, the accountant, the hiring manager and the IT fix-it-all by morning, you’re not alone. That moment is familiar to a lot of business owners.

It’s also one of the moments that led to the creation of Horsepower Today.

Built by people who’ve lived through that juggling act, Horsepower Today isn’t a plug-and-play solution. It’s a company shaped around the real rhythms, constraints and curveballs that small and mid-sized business owners navigate every day.

“Our model isn’t about being flashy,” said Brooke Pauley, CEO and co-founder. “It’s about showing up with clarity when a business needs stability, direction or simply room to breathe.”

That kind of clarity doesn’t come from a templated process or a onesize-fits-all approach. It comes from listening closely, moving quickly, and integrating in a way that feels more like a trusted teammate than a contractor.

Sometimes that means stepping in when a longtime team member steps out. Other times it means quietly building back-end systems while the founder steers through the next stage of growth. But it always means honoring the business owner’s vision without making them carry it alone.

“We’ve seen what happens when people are stretched too thin for too long,” Pauley said. “That’s when quality suffers, energy dips and decisions stall out. We’re here to keep that from happening.”

The Horsepower team operates as an embedded extension of each business. Just enough to restore momentum without adding unnecessary weight. It’s not about being less. It’s about being just right.

And that’s the point.

Because in a world full of big claims and louder voices, sometimes what a business really needs isn’t more noise. It’s alignment. It’s wisdom without ego. It’s people who can read the room, roll up their sleeves and lead from beside you, not above you.

Horsepower Today wasn’t built to compete with corporate giants. It was built to walk with the builders. The ones trying to grow something real, hold onto what matters, and make the next right decision with a little more breathing room.

If you’re in that place where growth feels good but also a little heavy, you don’t have to carry it alone. We’re here to help steady the load so you can keep building with focus and momentum.

At Horsepower Today, our professional and fractional consulting services are dedicated to driving your business success. We are here to journey alongside you, crafting solutions that enhance both your professional achievements and personal well-being.

Participants can choose from a timed or untimed 5K, a 1-mile course or a kids run, or register as a virtual participant.

Early registration offers the best value, with pricing increasing as the event approaches. The 5K untimed option is $45 until 11:59 a.m. Dec. 4, and $50 on race day. Timed 5K participants pay $50 until 11:59 a.m. on Dec. 4 and $55 on race day.

The 1-mile course follows the same pricing structure as the untimed 5K. A kids run option is available for $30 until 11:49 a.m. Dec. 4 and $35 on race day. For those unable to attend in person, a virtual registration option costs $45 through Dec. 31.

The Champions of Impact category, designed for top fundraisers with a suggested minimum of $4,000 in donations, includes registration fees ranging from $55 until 11:59 a.m. Dec. 4 and $60 on race day.

All registration packages include a race shirt and jingle bells, adding to the festive atmosphere that has made the event one of the nation’s most spirited fun runs. The holiday-themed event encourages participants to dress in seasonal attire while supporting arthritis research and patient services.

Event organizers note that final details are being finalized and will be announced closer to the December date. Registration fees and donations are non-refundable, as fundraising dollars are immediately put to work supporting the foundation’s programs in the local community.

The Arthritis Foundation uses proceeds from the Jingle Bell Run to fund research, advocacy and programs that serve the millions of Americans living with arthritis. The organization’s work addresses various forms of the disease, which affects people of all ages and backgrounds.

Interested participants can register online through the Arthritis Foundation’s website. Early registration is encouraged to secure the lowest pricing tier and guarantee event materials.
