EPILEPSY FOUNDATION OF NEBRASKA HOSTS MIDWEST HALLOWEEN BASH

The Epilepsy Foundation of Nebraska held a Halloween fundraiser on Oct. 11 at The Slowdown. The event included cocktails and entertainment by Lemon Fresh Day to support those affected by epilepsy. The venue was decorated to haunt and guests sipped on craft cocktails that coordinated with the theme.

Many came in costume and vied for prizes in the categories of best dressed individual, couple and group costume categories.

Under a vision that no one should face epilepsy alone, the Epilepsy Foundation of Nebraska serves approximately 18,000 affected Nebraskans with services like seizure first aid training, support groups, assistance in navigating the health care system, and advocating to protect the rights of those with seizure disorders.

The Sal Unveils New Look

CHILI WITH WILLY EVENT SHOWCASES PHASE 1 OF RENOVATION

On Oct. 15, donors of The Salvation Army Omaha and community members were given their first look at a major nonprofit project that has been in production for several years. The North Corps has been a beloved part of North Omaha since the 1930s, having been a source of food, security and entertainment for many in this area of town who have used “The Sal.” In 2024, construction began to renovate this stalwart of the city.

The first phase of renovations has been completed. The Salvation Army’s North Corps building, which serves up to 200 people daily, now has 42,000 square feet and includes a technology center with computers available for job searching or help with homework, a new collegiate-sized gymnasium, a chapel, a weight room and an office area.

Another important renovation to this project is the kitchen, which has tripled in size and is equipped with brand-new appliances. Long-term donor and volunteer Willy Theisen said the kitchen is essential to helping meet the needs of those coming to the facility. He noted that the North Corps is taking over four Salvation Army Feeding programs — a mental health program, a workforce development program, a summer feeding program and

the Winter Night Watch — and that the kitchen was designed to be a major part of this renovation.

“That (kitchen) was always a focal point of how and why it was designed,” Theisen said. “We feed a lot of people every week, and the food often comes from rescue programs and (partners). We have different mission statements, but we all try to do the same thing, which is to feed the most people and alleviate the most amount of need with good-tasting food.”

To unveil the renovated building, The Salvation Army held an event known as Chili With WIlly. Donor WIlly Theisen supplied his chili, and attendees could also eat slices of Godfather’s Pizza, fresh fruits and vegetables, and cookies created for the occasion.

The event included building tours and a fundraiser in

which people donated money to The Salvation Army and received an apron signed by Theisen. The majority of the tickets to the event were auctioned off at The Salvation Army’s spring event, D.J.’s Hero Awards.

“Chili with Willy was a tremendous success,” said Jeff Beckman, executive director of development for The Salvation Army Western Division. “We want to thank everyone who attended – especially our donors – and we salute Willy Theisen for his support of the important work that North Corps does in the community.”

Phase 2 of the renovation is underway and includes a mixed-use gym area, classrooms and personal hygiene areas. Construction is expected to be complete by spring 2026.

END OF YEAR planning

Pause and assess – not only financial performance, but also culture, talent needs and your company’s position in the market.

The days in the year may be winding down but conversations with your personal “cabinet of advisers” should be gearing up. There are many opportunities to minimize costly risks and keep your goals on track presented by both significant societal sea changes as well as the tax and legislative changes that accompany every new year.

Greater Omaha Chamber President and CEO Heath Mello said that as he looks ahead, he sees a year of transition and acceleration for business.

“We are entering a moment when artificial intelligence, workforce dynamics and infrastructure investments will converge to reshape how companies operate,” he said.

On one side, Mello said, AI is less a future idea and more a practical, everyday tool to boost productivity, manage costs and reach new markets. At the same time, Mello noted long-term competitiveness projects such as the streetcar project, the I-80 interchange, and riverfront and urban core redevelopment.

“These investments signal growth that small- and mid-sized businesses can tap into directly, expanding into new spaces, reaching a larger pool of talent or connecting to broader regional supply chains,” he said.

Members display agility and foresight during such shifts, Mello said, embracing new technologies and public investments to grow while also looking at how to retain, upskill and attract talent in a very competitive labor market.

Just as the Chamber assesses what worked, what didn’t, and its goals to build out its work programs and budget each fall, Mello encourages readers to exercise the same discipline.

“Pause and assess — not only financial performance, but also culture, talent needs and your company’s position in the market,” he said.

When asked about new resources in 2026, Mello said the Chamber is focusing on partnerships with local universities, workforce training providers and technology leaders to build an “AI-ready” region that supports the integration of AI in an increasingly competitive economy.

Bulletproof technology

Flexibility in IT support is key for today’s leading companies. These include fully managed models that handle the entire IT environment to co-managed models that work with internal IT teams. Cybersecurity-only and standalone services such as penetration tests/IT security assessments identify weak credentials, firewall misconfigurations and other vulnerabilities, according to Phil Taylor, vice president of American PCS.

Hardware and software refresh cycles are also an important consideration for the annual IT budget.

“For end-user equipment, we generally recommend a three-year cycle for laptops and a four-year cycle for desktops,” Taylor said. “Those lifespans can be extended depending on performance, organizational budget and whether the device can still support current operating systems and software.”

Servers, firewalls, switches and other critical infrastructure should never be allowed to run past end-of-life or without valid licenses and warranties.

“Once vendors stop issuing updates or coverage lapses the risk of downtime, performance degradation and security exposure increases dramatically,” he said.

Downtime is often underestimated, Taylor said, because it doesn’t appear as a budget line item. Plus, the costs go beyond IT.

“Lost productivity, delayed customer service, reputational damage and lost revenue can quickly add up, often dwarfing the price of preventative measures,” he said.

Taylor encourages clients to make full use of managed services provider (MSP) relationships by fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness. This includes setting aside time for strategic IT business reviews and viewing MSPs as an extension of one’s team. Short videos on recognizing risks, building safe online habits and more are available at American PCS’s YouTube channel.

Powering employee health

Swartzbaugh Farber & Associates Vice President of Employee Benefits Mary Drueke-Collins noted AI underwriting programs can now quickly analyze huge amounts of data to assess expected costs. This can help companies in negotiating renewals with insurance companies and identify educational and claim management opportunities to improve employee health and strategize health insurance funding options.

Drueke-Collins said many companies are facing some of the largest renewal increases in many years, along with rising maximum out-of-pocket costs.

“Small- to mid-sized business owners [that are] struggling with the ability to keep the employee monthly portion of health insurance premiums affordable might have more options than they think, especially if their employees are relatively healthy,” she said.

With level-funded plans, employers pay monthly premiums, not unlike fully insured plans, but if the claim experience is better than expected the employer receives a portion of that surplus back at the end of the year. If it’s worse than expected, Drueke-Collins said, they don’t make up the deficit; instead, their maximum cost is the amount paid in monthly premiums.

She encouraged employers with tax-sheltered medical accounts to ensure they

have updated and communicated new benefit limits to employees.

“Many of these plans are ‘use it or lose it,’ meaning if employees don’t use all the funds by the end of the year, they lose their contributions,” she said.

Companies with 50 or more employees must also make sure health plans meet the Affordable Care Act’s minimum value and affordability requirements. Drueke-Collins said every renewal season seems more complicated, so being responsive to broker queries and changes can impact final proposals.

Accelerating financial goals

Frankel Partner and CPA Dan Morris emphasized the importance of not putting things off until next year as it is difficult to remember what happened a year ago.

“Think of your business like an automobile: with regular accounting maintenance it will be highly dependable and save you time and stress,” he said. “Share your thoughts and plans about transactions or events that may be taking place, even if you

“Prior to the Act, bonus depreciation was slated to be only 40% for 2025,” Morris said. “Pass-through owners will now also continue to enjoy the 20% QBI deduction on their personal returns, subject to certain limitations, thanks to the bill making this provision permanent. QBI deduction phaseouts were also increased.”

Less taxing planning

Kent Kramer, chief investment officer for Foster Group, said he likes for CPAs, advisers and clients to come together to “move the needle” at the year’s end with actions like charitable gifting using a donor-advised fund.

Instead of paying a capital gains tax on investments and gifting the remaining assets, the charity gets 100% of the value of the gift in the fund as no one pays the

While appreciation naturally increases the value of the IRA or 401(k), Kramer cautioned how the required minimum distribution increases right along with it.

“I always talk about making lemonade out of lemons,” he said. “If I’ve got some losses, I can convert some things to my advantage; in this case, converting assets that

Lastly, don’t miss out on fully funding HSAs.

“Unlike flexible spending accounts, they don’t have to be emptied out every year, so you can accumulate significant tax-deferred assets in an HSA beyond what you are doing in your 401 (k) or IRA,” he said.

BANKING series

Ghosts in the Machine BANKS, CREDIT UNIONS WARN AGAINST FRAUDSTERS

When it comes down to it, the individual is still the first line of defense against many of these kinds of attacks.

Ever since the days of Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang, financial institutions have played a cat-and-mouse game to head off bad actors intent on stealing depositors’ hard-earned money.

While funds don’t move on stagecoaches anymore, banks are still a target for robbers to this day, both the gun-toting variety and lately, something far more insidious and hard to combat. Digital fraud and various types of scams targeting individuals cast a wider net while providing less physical risk for thieves. This represents the new Wild West when it comes to financial security.

Every trick in the book

“Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, making it essential for both individuals and businesses to stay informed about the latest threats,” said Lindsay Anderson, executive vice president, chief technology officer for West Gate Bank. “One

OLD AND NEW

of the most common is phishing, where fraudulent emails or text messages impersonate legitimate institutions to trick users into revealing sensitive information.

“Closely related is social engineering, which involves manipulative techniques, such as impersonation or emotional appeals to gain trust and extract confidential data. Another growing concern is malware and ransomware, malicious software designed to steal data, lock systems or demand payment to restore access.”

The tactics are not only getting more numerous, but unlike the smash-and-grab tactics of the past, more sophisticated as well.

“Phishing and social engineering remain the biggest threats for both consumers and businesses, and scammers are getting more sophisticated in their efforts,” said Bret Engstrom, chief information officer with Veridian Credit Union. “Today’s attackers study their targets, personalize messages and use multiple channels to try to trick people into sharing credentials or authorizing fraudulent payments.

Technology alone isn’t enough. As people, we can sometimes be the weakest link.

“For businesses, compromised emails are especially damaging. Criminals pose as trusted vendors or executives and send highly realistic requests for wires or ACH transfers. These scams can cost an organization millions and are often difficult to reverse once payments are sent.”

In some cases, the scams themselves are fairly low-tech, appealing to basic human weaknesses, but are made possible by digital tools that mask the true identity of bad actors.

“The most recent trends we are seeing with consumer customers are imposter scams, romance scams and investment scams,” said Amy Berger, assistant vice president and security supervisor with Bankers Trust. “Some of these have been around for years and involve hooking a victim through social media or other online channels and convincing them to send money, take advantage of an investment opportunity, or scaring the victim into compliance as they pretend to be government agencies or law enforcement, among others.

“Check fraud, generally resulting from mail theft, also continues to be one of the more common types of fraud impacting business customers.”

Multiplied threats

Business clients tend to have more complicated security issues because of the amount of activity that is going on, from paying vendors and workers to accounts receivable to the multiple potential access points presented by employee workstations.

“Security for companies is multifaceted,” said Derek Smith, chief information officer with Family Focus Federal Credit Union. “It’s not just about protecting internal systems, it’s about ensuring every vendor, every process and every individual with access is operating securely and responsibly.

“We rely on third-party partners to handle sensitive member data and financial

Security Tips for Individual Consumers

1. Use strong, unique passwords - Avoid reusing passwords across accounts. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex credentials.

2. Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) - MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone.

3. Enable FIDO2/passkeys, which offer phishing-resistant protection. If unavailable, use an authenticator app; SMS or phone-based MFA should be a last resort due to its vulnerability to SIM-swapping.

4. Monitor account activity - Regularly check your bank statements and transaction history for unauthorized activity.

5. Stay alert to scams - Be skeptical of unsolicited messages asking for personal information. Banks will never ask for sensitive data via email or text.

6. Keep devices secure - Install updates promptly, use antivirus software, and avoid public Wi-Fi when accessing financial accounts.

transactions. That requires rigorous due diligence during vendor selection, including assessments of cybersecurity posture, compliance history and operational maturity.

Vendors are classified by risk level and those with elevated access undergo more frequent audits and must meet higher standards.”

Here to Serve Our Community

Being a family-owned, community bank means investing in the communities we serve.

It means personal service and working with people who are our neighbors. It means building strong relationships with our customers in order to surpass their expectations. It means offering the services of a big bank to meet the needs of our customers.

BANKS, CREDIT UNIONS WARN AGAINST FRAUDSTERS OLD AND NEW

AI is reshaping the cybersecurity landscape and it’s very much a two-way street.

“Security for businesses has become more complex because so many business functions now happen digitally and across multiple platforms,” Engstrom said. “At minimum, companies should be conducting annual security reviews — the more frequently, the better. Other best practices include keeping software patched, having a defined change management process and deploying modern endpoint protection.

“Technology alone isn’t enough. As people, we can sometimes be the weakest link. Training and awareness are necessary to keep these systems effective. Every employee has to be part of the defense for it to work.”

Berger agreed, saying that companies need to pay as much attention to people as to systems and consider partnering with their financial institution for security assistance, where available.

“Companies are more attractive targets to scammers since the attacks, when successful, can be much more lucrative,” Berger said. “A company’s security is only as strong as its employees, so regular ongoing training and testing on cybersecurity risks is highly recommended.

“We also recommend companies implement fraud protection services offered through our Treasury Management team and follow best practices such as using multifactor identification on all critical systems and establishing separation of duties and dual control requirements on any transactional functions.”

AI: suspect or savior?

As artificial intelligence becomes more refined and ubiquitous, it has the capability to be both an institution’s dream defense and its worst nightmare, financial professionals said.

Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics.
- LINDSAY ANDERSON, EVP/CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER, WEST GATE BANK
- DEREK SMITH, CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER, FAMILY FOCUS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

“AI is reshaping the cybersecurity landscape and it’s very much a two-way street,” Smith said. “On the defensive side, AI enables businesses to monitor systems in real time, detect anomalies and automate threat responses. This level of insight used to require significant investment in infrastructure and personnel. Now it’s more accessible than ever.

“But the same technology is also being used to launch attacks. AI allows for the creation of highly convincing phishing emails, voice impersonations and deepfake videos. In a digital-first world where people share personal information online, it’s easier than ever to replicate someone’s identity and use it for fraud.”

Engstrom agreed, summing up the duality of this twist on cybersecurity as “you have to use AI to fight AI.”

“Financial institutions are already using AI to detect unusual patterns in transactions and shut down fraud in real time,” Engstrom added. “The same technology is also being used by bad actors; one current trend is that scammers are using AI to create a cloned voice or video of a CFO to call an employee and approve a fake payment.”

What lies ahead

Not unlike the threats themselves, individuals’ and companies’ best defense against current and even evolving scams and fraud are decidedly fundamental.

“When it comes down to it, the individual is still the first line of defense against many of these kinds of attacks,” Berger said. “It is important to make sure (companies) spend time training employees and customers understand the kinds of scams that are out there and the red flags to watch for. The fraud landscape is always changing.”

Security Strategies for Businesses

1. Conduct regular security audits — Review access controls, system vulnerabilities and compliance with industry standards.

2. Implement role-based access controls — Limit account access based on job responsibilities to reduce exposure.

3. Train employees on cyber hygiene — Educate staff on recognizing phishing attempts, securing devices and reporting suspicious activity.

4. Schedule software updates and patch management — Ensure all systems are up-to-date to prevent exploitation of known vulnerabilities.

5. Use secure payment and authentication systems Invest in encrypted payment platforms and MFA for all financial transactions.

TROY DAVIS BUILDS SALON EMPIRE ON AUTHENTICITY, EDUCATION

Troy Davis never questioned whether he’d own a business; growing up in a family that included many entrepreneurs, the path seemed clear. What wasn’t clear was that his journey would lead him away from the family’s woodworking tradition and into the world of hairstyling.

“I tried framing the summer between my junior and senior year of high school,” Davis said. “They asked me to carry a four-by-eight sheet of plywood across a two-by-four two stories in the air and I walked off the job.”

That decision led him to discover his passion for hair. After four years as a commissioned stylist, Davis partnered with Carol Cole to open Fringes in Omaha’s Old Market on Feb. 2, 1999. The location at 10th and Jackson became his professional home for more than two decades.

Davis worked seven days a week for the first 17 years of his career, balancing salon work with international travel for Rusk, a hair-care products manufacturer. He became one of 10 people worldwide in his position, averaging 35 trips per year while running his Omaha business in three-day weeks.

Digging deep

“I dug a deep well,” Davis said, referencing advice from Cole. “The deeper you dig, the longer that well will support you through your life.”

The business evolved over the years. Fringes became Curb Appeal in 2012 when Sarah Pithan replaced Cole as Davis’s partner. By 2020, the salon was on track to gross $1 million when COVID-19 forced its closure. Rather than reopening together, Davis and Pithan separated, and Davis launched Energi Houss as a sole proprietorship, adding art shows and body work to the offerings.

But Davis’s most significant milestone wasn’t business success — it was getting sober.

“The milestone that I would say is the biggest achievement in my life was quitting drinking,” Davis said. That decision opened the door to yoga, meditation and studying Ayurveda, transforming his approach to beauty and wellness.

What sets Energi Houss apart isn’t just technical skill — it’s philosophy. Davis approaches hair styling as holistic wellness, incorporating Ayurvedic principles into client conversations.

Inner beauty

“I really think that beauty comes from within,” Davis said. “It’s way more than just what your skin looks like or the makeup that you put on it or what your hair looks like.”

He emphasizes product education, drawing parallels between ingredient awareness in food and beauty products.

“Over 60% of what you put on your body ends up in your bloodstream,” Davis said. “If you don’t eat Twinkies, why would you use Matrix?”

Throughout his career, Davis trained and mentored numerous stylists, raising professional standards across Omaha’s hair industry. During the Curb Appeal years, the salon donated a minimum of $500 monthly to local nonprofits, including YES, an organization that provides many services for youth, including those in the LGBTQ community.

Today, Davis works alongside stylist Izzy Cooper at Energi Houss. At 50, his priorities have shifted from the fame and fortune he chased in his 20s.

“The only thing I care about is happiness and joy and quality of life and peace,” Davis said.

The Corky Canvas

BY

Passionate About Art

Mike and Lisa Ross are passionate about business, art and the business of creating art. While not artists themselves, they have always had an appreciation for it. When they were looking to own a business, purchasing The Corky Canvas in 2018 just made good sense.

“We wanted something that was fun and that our customers would really enjoy. Our managers are very passionate it and so is our team,” Lisa said.

Beyond providing products and services, the core essence of The Corky Canvas is providing a place to come and create art without being an artist, Mike said.

“Most of our staff has art experience but not at a high level. To have creative art right in our community is the biggest thing,” he said.

Within the paint-and-sip industry, the Rosses are unique because their business is privately owned and theirs were the first shop of its kind in Nebraska. The art templates used in their studio are created by their staff, not a franchise.

“That is probably the most innovative thing we do,” Mike said. Like so many businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic changed The Corky Canvas operations. Laying off nearly all of their team (except the two store managers) and coming up with ways to have grab-and-go kits available helped them to survive the pandemic. With COVID behind them, the couple continued to change and evolve their business model to meet the shifting needs and values of their customers.

“People didn’t have the money to come in and have a fun event,”

Lisa said. “We had to re-evaluate content, price points, what the team was putting together for classes and the schedule.”

Price points differ on canvas size, and The Corky Canvas locations offer weeknight classes and Thirsty Thursdays, so customers have options available that may be less expensive than a weekend class.

Unique classes

Classes at The Corky Canvas change with the seasons, meaning they have seasonally themed art as well as classes that offer individualized options. A “paint your pet” class, for example, requires lots of prep work for the instructor. Customers provide a picture of their pet in advance of the class, and The Corky Canvas instructors create a stencil that will then be painted by the customer in class to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Some of their other unique offerings include porch signs, painted door mats and wedding signs used for greeting reception guests and later hung in the couple’s home as a memento of their special day.

The Rosses attribute their success to weekly team meetings via conference call so that the Omaha and Lincoln managers can participate in the Monday huddle. They share everything, Mike said.

“We cover the business, the numbers, marketing and we try to be very open about what is going on with the performance of the business,” he said.

Common Myths About Career Transitioning

When it comes to exploring franchise opportunities, many aspiring entrepreneurs refer to this step as the second act of their careers. Some have always dreamed of owning a business of their own. For others, circumstances dictated action. Whatever the reason, the intentional choice to pursue an entrepreneurial future often involves a career transition, which can be scary.

It doesn’t have to be.

Yes, it takes courage to leave your comfort zone behind and take a proverbial leap of faith into the unknown. But it’s a whole lot easier once you dispel common myths about career transitioning, such as:

It’s too late to start over. Decades of franchise consulting experience have taught me it’s never too late to explore your options; references available upon request.

My experience is too limited. Thanks to the comprehensive training provided, the majority of franchise opportunities require no prior experience.

I’d have to go back to square one With over 4,000 different franchise opportunities, you’ll find plenty of businesses where you can leverage your previous experience to make a lateral move.

I don’t have the capital to make a career transition. There are numerous and often creative ways to secure the investment level needed to pursue your dream of business ownership, some of which you may not even be aware.

I’m too set in my ways to change now. Maybe so, but staying put is a conscious choice. The decision to change your career trajectory for the better is always available to you.

If you keep an open mind about exploring a career transition, the possibility of creating a better future belongs to you. You just have to believe in yourself and your ability to succeed. At the end of the day, what do you really have to lose by trying?

Blake Martin owns FranNet of the Heartland, an Omaha-based consultancy that provides no-cost, no-obligation franchise consulting for entrepreneurs and those involved in career transitions to help them establish business ownership of their own. Martin helps produce transformative outcomes for candidates who commit to positive change.

THE FRANCHISEE:

Q&A:

Tell us about the business model of your franchise. Redbox+ Dumpsters is a roll-off container company. We have traditional open top roll-offs that you will see in driveways and on construction sites. What is unique about Redbox+ is our patented Elite container that comes with two portapotties mounted to the front of container. This creates a solution for contractors, roofers and home remodelers.

Why did you choose this industry?

Coming from the professional services world as a licensed land surveyor, I was familiar with construction, how projects flow and the little things that turn into costly delays for contractors.

Also, having managed a larger survey operation with multiple crews and being part of an employee-heavy startup, I was looking for something that could be run with minimal employees where the equipment could do the work. Employees are vital but are an expense that never goes away. That is why I was looking for a business that could be operated with minimal employees.

What was the process of starting your franchise? What challenges have you faced?

First off, finding a good fit. There are a lot of options out there, so working with a franchise consultant that can help you navigate the process makes the journey a little less stressful.

From there, it is kind of like dating; the first call is getting to learn about the franchise and the people who will eventually be a big part of your life. Then comes Discovery Day to personally meet the individuals behind the franchise and learn more about the equipment and processes.

Once the decision is made to move forward, the ball is rolling. Financing, entity formation, permitting, finding a shop, starting the marketing process, etc. is like jumping into the frying pan.

What have been your biggest wins?

Right now, we are at two trucks and 73 containers just closing Year Five. I am a little behind my intended goal but feel we have made great strides. We have built some amazing relationships, and I feel we are changing the perception of what service looks like in this industry. Although financial freedom is still a carrot I am chasing, I do have time freedom to be able to attend both of my daughters’ events and activities.

What does the future hold?

My five-year goal when starting Redbox+ Dumpsters was four trucks and 100 containers. I am learning we can do more with less, so I now have a revised goal of three trucks and 100 containers. My goal is to move more heavily into the contractor world as well as grow into Lincoln with one or two trucks and about 50 containers there.

THE POWER OF CHOICE

Offering health insurance to your employees used to be a straightforward proposition: You gave them a few options each year. They chose one. Case closed. Not anymore. A 2025 Society of Human Resource Management study found that health benefits easily top the list of workforce expectations. Today’s employees want $0 preventive care. Mental health support. Wellness programs. And perhaps most importantly, the ability to choose their own providers, along with access to broad networks.

Offering employees that flexibility can be a powerful competitive advantage — and a way to hold down costs.

Why choice matters

It preserves trusted relationships

When employees get to keep their local doctors and specialists, they hold onto a sense of continuity that comes from working with providers who know their health history. That connection is particularly important with chronic conditions or complex health issues. It can also make them more likely to follow treatment plans. And it can help boost loyalty because they feel supported by their employers.

It expands access to care

A robust network means employees aren’t limited by geography. Whether someone needs a specialist in Omaha, a pediatrician in Lincoln or a provider across the country, wide-ranging access can help ensure timely care. That’s vital for families with dependents or employees who travel for work. It also means your people won’t be forced to go out of network or delay treatment, helping them get back to work faster.

It supports a distributed workforce

Broad network access means reliable coverage for employees and their dependents, no matter where they live, work or travel. Whether your team is spread across Nebraska or scattered nationwide, flexible networks give everyone the same access to in-network care. That can be a major asset for recruiting and retaining talent.

It reduces costly surprises

When employees know their visits and treatments are covered, they can get care without second-guessing or worrying about unexpected bills. That means fewer

What sets Medica apart

While other insurers offer either local or national networks, our Nebraska plans combine both. As an example, an employee who signs up for a broad network plan can see nearly any primary or specialty care provider in Nebraska. On top of that, they get one phone number for questions about care and coverage; a 24/7/365 nurse line; urgent care for minor injuries and illnesses; and a national provider network they can tap into when traveling outside the state.

The other option is an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) plan. The core idea behind an ACO is simple: We partner with doctors, hospitals and other health care providers to offer low-cost, high-quality care. Employees who choose an ACO can save 20% over the broad network plan. They can still select from dozens of hospitals and clinics and more than 4,600 physicians, specialists and advanced practice clinicians across the state. Plus they get the same one-call access for information on benefits, billing, care, coverage and appointment-scheduling.

The bottom line: No other carrier in the Nebraska market matches this flexibility and depth. Want to find out more? Check out everything we offer at Medica.com/ NEB.
