TOP THINGS TO KNOW

Developer updates progress

The ACCESS Companies have announced via news release the construction commencement of its redevelopment plan for the long-vacant former Gordmans and Toys “R” Us spaces at the Lake Manawa Centre in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Ross Dress For Less, HomeGoods, Sierra Trading Post, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Home Depot and other national tenants will occupy the new center, which includes high visibility from both I-80 and I-29. One 9,000 square foot space remains to be leased, the release stated.

“I think the quality of this tenant lineup is the best possible outcome for these spaces and speaks to the volume potential this highly concentrated trade area offers its tenants,” said Darren Hicks, a principal of both ACCESS and Sower. “It feels good to breathe new life into this area.”

The two empty boxes were purchased individually by a joint-venture partnership sponsored by Sower Capital Management LLC, an affiliate of ACCESS. MONTAGE Builders LLC, is performing the general contracting duties.

The Root coming to Omaha

Tulsa-based The Root Coworking has announced it is expanding to Nebraska with an Omaha location. The Root – Builders is the company’s second new market expansion of 2025 and will be located in the Builders District.

The coworking space will occupy the first two floors of the Mike Fahey building at 1501 Mike Fahey St. It will offer more than 25,000 square feet of private offices, team suites, meeting rooms, event space and a podcast studio, as well as open and collaborative coworking areas.

Executives hosted a hard-hat tour of the space for community members and media on April 30. The new amenity is expected to open in June.

Local McDonald’s franchises make big donations

Local McDonald’s owner-operators presented two large donations to the local Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha April 25. The restaurants’ Penny for a Pound and Shamrock Shake fundraisers raised nearly $140,000 in support of the charity.

Penny for a Pound is a yearlong fundraiser where one penny is donated for every pound of fries sold in all Nebraska McDonald’s in 2024 and represented $132,000 of the total donated. The Shamrock Shake fundraiser held February 10 to March 23, 2025, collected $0.25 of each Shamrock Shake sold locally and totaled $17,300.

Ronald McDonald Houses nationwide operate as standalone nonprofits providing housing for families of critically ill children receiving treatment at local hospitals. The presentations were made at the main office of Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha, located at 620 S. 38th Ave.

Stonegate Plaza changes hands

Five-suite retail strip mall Stonegate Plaza has been sold for $2.4 million. The sale was announced by California-based Marcus & Millichap Brokers, which listed the property and handled the transaction through its St. Louis office.

“We received strong interest in Stonegate Plaza, with multiple offers submitted,” said Austin Sweet, senior associate with Marcus & Millichap Brokers. “The seller ultimately chose a local investor who is deeply familiar with the Omaha market.

“With retail vacancy at historic lows, investor demand remains exceptionally high, and we expect this property to continue performing well as a stable, serviceoriented center.”

Stonegate Plaza, located on North 120th Street in Omaha, offers 13,648 square feet of retail space and traffic exposure in excess of 20,000 vehicles a day. The fully leased center is anchored by Sherwin-Williams, which has occupied the property for more than 20 years.

NAR: March home sales slipped 6%

The National Association of Realtors reported April 24 that existinghome sales slipped 5.9% during March and 2.4% compared to a year ago. Homebuying was down across all four of NAR’s market sectors in part due to rising prices.

Median home price in the U.S. reached $404,000, the first time ever in March that median home prices exceeded $400,000. Prices were up 2.7% from last year and represented the 21st consecutive month of year-over-year price increases.

The slower sales nudged total housing inventory up 8.1% to 1.33 million units nationwide. This represents a four-month supply, up from 3.5 months in February and 3.2 months for March 2024.

The Midwest Region, which includes Nebraska, was down in year-over-year sales in two of NAR’s six price categories, off 16.4% in existing homes priced up to $100,000 and down 6.3% in homes $100,000 to $250,000. The region posted the highest growth in the nation among homes priced $250,000 to $500,000 at 1.5% but the lowest increase in the country in homes $500,000 to $750,000 at 2.3%. The Midwest was second behind the Northeast in sales of homes priced $750,000 to $1 million and over $1 million at 16.3% and 22.2%, respectively.

For all regions, sales distribution was highest for homes in the $250,000 to $500,000 category, which represented almost half of the homes sold in March in the Midwest. Homes priced $100,000 to $250,000 was second in the Midwest at 34% of sales followed by the $500,000 to $750,000 price range at just over 10%.

LION’S GATE SECURITY SOLUTIONS CO-FOUNDERS CALVIN JONES AND JOE

Badge of Honor

Lion’s Gate Security Solutions owner named Small Business Person of the Year

Joe Hodges and Calvin Jones began Lion’s Gate Security Solutions after retiring in 2008 as Omaha police officers and working at North High School as program directors. The principal at the school often sought their advice about security and law enforcement issues.

Their work at North High led to the formation of a security company, which, over the years has grown into a leader in the local market. In 2025 Hodges was recognized as Nebraska’s Small Business Person of the Year by the state U.S. Small Business Association. The honor sent him to awards ceremonies in Washington, D.C., along with 52 other state winners.

Hodges called the recognition “an incredible honor” and said he sees it as testament to the hard work and dedication of his team.

“I am proud that Lion’s Gate provides high-quality security solutions to our clients, and this recognition validates our commitment to excellence,” he said. “The business was started to address needs in the market and this award solidifies the fact that we are in the right market.”

“We are very proud to highlight his achievements, along with his partner’s, at our

national Small Business Week event on May 9,” said Tim Mittan, district director, SBA Nebraska, in a press release.

School incident

Lion’s Gate was born out of a scary local incident where public school students riding the bus were found to be carrying guns. Jones and Hodges conferred with school administrators on finding the most effective safety solutions.

The school district also showed interest and soon, Lion’s Gate Security Solutions was formed. Jones and Hodges provided security services for a high school athletic events and the rest is history.

Jones and Hodges utilized the guidance of SCORE through the local U.S. Small Business Administration as well as the Veterans Business Outreach Center to get the company off the ground. As a testament to their strategic vision and hard work, Lion’s Gate Security Solution now employs over 150 employees across six states.

Since its inception, the company has expanded its services from metal detector entry control, to emergency training for corporations to prepare employees, to

I am impressed with his being able to scale and provide other services to that potential client— first aid, CPR, emergency action planning, workplace violence training — so we can not just supply security, but also supply other services that fall within our wheelhouse.

advanced firearms training, first aid CPR training, non-emergency transportation and more. As time and technology went along, the company also added such things as video surveillance, entry control and alarm system installations, cybersecurity services and security and safety consulting.

Strength of employees

Hodges said the background and experience of company employees is what makes Lion’s Gate Security Solutions stand out.

“We make an effort to recruit retired military [personnel], criminal justice professionals, law enforcement professionals and fire protection specialists,” he said. “These unique qualities are the foundation of our strategy of expanding our services into areas that we have experts in.”

Competition from other security companies has been something that Hodges and his team have worked to overcome.

“Prospective clients have a fear of the unknown,” he said. “Because of this fear, they may not be willing to change service providers even though they are not providing quality services.”

By contrast, Lion’s Gate Security Solutions’ reputation speaks for itself and growth has been steady and controlled.

“Being in business is a 24/7 venture,” Hodges explained. “As you grow and acquire more employees, their finances, security and safety become your responsibility. You think about your employees almost as much as you do your family.”

Hodges said the biggest highlight of running his company has been providing employment for people and allowing them to gain personal growth through professional training. As a veteran himself, he is proud to hire other veterans.

“We seek out veterans who have skills that corporations may not fully understand and assist them in converting their war skills into the corporate world,” he said.

Looking ahead

Speaking of the company’s future, Hodges said he sees nothing but bright things on the horizon. He and his team are looking at forging partnerships with other security companies in other states in order to expand their national footprint even more. In addition, the firm is looking at partnering with companies to provide security for large entertainment events.

Hodges also said the positive business climate that Nebraska offers has been a decided advantage, as has been the willingness of people to provide word-of-mouth referrals.

“One of the biggest highlights about being in business in Nebraska is that when you are providing a quality service, you’re more likely to be noticed because people that attend events usually attend multiple events,” he said. “If they see you performing and they like your image, they will mention your name to others.

“There is no template for success. Being successful requires a lot of things to happen at the right time. It requires being a visionary, being educated in your profession, being surrounded by individuals and organizations that are competent and understand your business, and luck.”

Lotus House of Yoga

Blossoming Business

LOTUS HOUSE OF YOGA IS A VISION REALIZED OVER 15 YEARS

Mary Clare Sweet’s mother, Anne, introduced her to yoga in childhood so by the time she started Lotus House of Yoga in 2010, she had already practiced yoga for years.

“There were a few yoga studios here already but I knew that I wanted to bring something that felt very fresh and modern and a synthesis of all of the yoga that I’d experienced,” Sweet said. “I had done quite a bit of travel and I wanted to just create something that was of my own vision.”

That vision has expanded over 15 years to include Pilates, sculpt, cycle and meditation classes at studios in Omaha, Lincoln and Mexico City, but yoga remains the soul of the business.

“I love yoga just as much to this day,” she said. “It is the philosophy of yoga that extends far beyond any sort of physical movement; it’s a lifestyle, it’s a lens with which to see the world. It’s a framework with which to live your life and guide your steps.”

Sweet said she has purposefully maintained the

business name as Lotus House of Yoga rather than something more expansive such as Lotus Holistic Center or Lotus House of Wellness.

“It’s so important that ‘yoga’ is included front and center, because all of our teachers — no matter what modality of movement they teach — are trained in the yoga philosophy,” she said. “They’re trained in understanding intersectionality and accessibility and our core tenants of inclusion and community-centered everything.

“Yoga is who we are. It is what we do. It’s how we live our life, and it’s just expressed through a lot of different styles of movement.”

Power within ourselves

Sweet was only in her mid-20s when she began her business. From a position of lived experience and accumulated wisdom, she said she’d advise her younger self to approach a few things differently.

After 15 years, I know that this is working and it’s a benefit to the community.

“She needs to know that she needs to go bigger. I look back and I wish I would have taken more risks or trusted in myself and not held back because of how it had been done before, or what I thought was the limit for being an entrepreneur or being a business owner,” Sweet said. “I’m 41 now, and I have a 17-year-old and a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old, and one of the benefits is I believe so much in the human spirit. I believe so much in our radical ability to accept exactly who we are, and exactly where we are, and know that we need nothing else, except for the gift, the compassion, the magic, the power that we have within ourselves at this very moment.”

The COVID-19 pandemic was the biggest challenge to her business to date, Sweet said, but it also had a silver lining.

“Going through the pandemic as a fitness business was so tough because we had different standards and suggestions on a national level versus what was being pushed at a state level, versus how we wanted to care for our community,” she said, “but also recognizing that yoga and mindfulness techniques were needed more than ever with the amount of isolation that was happening in our country.”

By 2020, the studio had already introduced online yoga on a small scale. Today clients can take classes in person or live online as well as access a web library of past classes.

“During the first phase of the pandemic, I would just go to

the studio and film by myself all day long, and that really set us up for success when people started using virtual platforms for their fitness and mindfulness,” she said. “I would say that was unexpected; it was difficult and yet it really helped to propel our business into something incredible.”

Beyond the studio

Sweet has made numerous community connections through the studio over 15 years, from hosting free outdoor classes to school outreach to providing yoga scholarships for underrepresented populations.

“Our accessibility goes so far beyond just what we do in the studio, and we really aim to make an impact across the Omaha metro and Lincoln,” she said.

Looking back, she said she’s proud of simply making it to the 15-year mark.

“After 15 years, I know that this is working and it’s a benefit to the community,” she said. “So, the next 15 years, I want to open more studios, have more online training, train more teachers, and just expand the Lotus name even bigger.

“To be a woman-run, family-run business opened in a recession, we got through the pandemic — I think the legacy of 15 years is incredible. I always feel like I’m just getting started.”

What is the validation process and why is it important?

For prospects looking at different franchise opportunities, one of the most valuable steps in the due diligence process is validation – a chance to speak directly with existing franchise owners in the network to get an honest assessment of the business opportunity they’re considering. These one-on-one sessions typically occur after the prospect has participated in the foundational calls and reviewed the franchise disclosure document (FDD).

For prospects, the opportunity to ask tough questions of their own is ultimately an exercise in reassurance. It’s a golden opportunity to validate for themselves whether the information they’ve been given paints an accurate picture of ownership within the network. In addition to verifying financial projections, the answers also help prospects get a better understanding of the day-to-day expectations for operating the business.

Typical validation inquiries include what the current owners like and don’t like about the business model. They also extend to the level of training and support, as well as how responsive the corporate team has been. Prospects often ask about challenges the owners have faced and what the corporate culture is like. The beauty of validation calls is that nothing is really off limits. Prospects can ask if the current owners have any regrets, and if they’d do it all over again. Other common inquiries involve ramp-up time, how soon to expect the breakeven point, and where the franchisor has room to improve.

Validation is mutually beneficial. For franchisors, it’s an open and transparent way to convince prospects of the brand’s value proposition while boosting trust and credibility. For prospective franchisees, validation is not only an opportunity to fully understand what they’re getting into, but also a chance to evaluate the owners they’ll be working side by side with in the network.

THE FRANCHISEE:

THE EXERCISE COACH

Innovative workouts fuel rapid expansion for local owners

Q&A:

Q: Why did you choose this industry?

CO-OWNERS RYAN AND SOMMER HAHN

A: We liked that it was recession-resistant and something that is always needed and so impactful.

Q: How did this all come about as a step you really wanted to take?

A: My wife and I originally helped start a church and through that process we really loved the idea of starting something from scratch. We knew that we could work well together so we decided to look into going into business for ourselves.

Q: Did either of you have a background in entrepreneurism growing up or in previous roles?

A: We didn’t grow up in entrepreneur families. Her background was in corporate with Union Pacific, and mine was in corporate as well at Conagra. In 2019, we started looking for franchising opportunities, just to reduce the risk with a concept that had been proven. We were looking for something that would transform lives and create community.

Q: As luck would have it, you were originally planning to open in March of 2020, correct?

A: Yes, and it was a pretty scary time for our family. Our employees were all trained and we were ready to open up our studio and then they all had to be furloughed. They stuck with us even though we weren’t open and so we decided it would make sense to launch our business, or at least try, when people could go get haircuts and other personal services again. We opened our doors in May of 2020 at our west Omaha studio and it just took off. We had a record launch for the concept.

Q: Why was the response what it was?

A: Well, I think part of it is this is such a unique business opportunity because it really solves an unmet need. About 80% of people don’t have a regular exercise routine and that’s largely because they don’t have time or they don’t like to work out or they don’t like the bigbox gym scene or they are afraid of getting hurt. Those are the main reasons, we find, that people don’t stick with a routine.

Here, we pretty much address all of those barriers. It’s two 20-minute workouts, it’s a very small exercise studio, it’s appointmentbased, and you’re working with a coach who makes sure your form is correct. So you don’t have to change your lifestyle to work out for an hour, five times a week. You can become somebody who does work out, but it’s a much smaller amount of time commitment.

Q: How do you accomplish that?

A: These are all data-driven machines and everything is tailored to the individual. When you come into our studio we’ll set a range of motion for the exercise and we’ll do a strength test. When you get on a machine you’ll have your own unique pin number and the machine will know what you’re able to do and it develops a strength program tailored to your ability. So, you could have a 13-year-old or a 93-year-old or somebody who’s an athlete or somebody who’s never worked out get on the same equipment and get a workout that’s customized to your ability. As you get stronger, it progresses and keeps pushing you to the right intensity.

Q: How has the business grown from that first opening?

A: After our first one in west Omaha (18023 Oak St., Ste. B) we opened our second one in central Omaha (8716 Countryside Plz.) in February 2021. Then, in March of 2022, we opened our third out in northwest Omaha (3525 N. 147th St., Ste. 203). A little over a year ago we were getting ready to expand in Lincoln and Papillion when we learned about an owner in St. Louis who was retiring. So, we ended up purchasing those. Hopefully next year we’ll be opening Papillion with Lincoln coming up after that on the horizon.

PLACE OF BIRTH: BLAIR, NEBRASKA

EDUCATION: BLAIR HIGH SCHOOL, DANA COLLEGE (INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION AND GERMAN)

It’s a Good Thing

ENTREPRENEUR AND STATE LEGISLATOR

MEGAN HUNT LIVES LIFE ON HER OWN TERMS

Megan Hunt’s life has played out as a colorful mosaic of delicious contradictions. A state senator who doesn’t like politicians, a proud progressive in an overwhelmingly red state, a devotee of equal fervor of East Coast blueblood Martha Stewart and Omaha’s own state Sen. Ernie Chambers — all of these elements and more coalesce to form her complex persona.

Born in Blair, Nebraska, Hunt graduated from Dana College, majoring in intercultural communication and German. From early in her career, she earned recognition and praise for her professional and personal accomplishments, as recipient of Shout Magazine’s 30 Under 30 award and inclusion on the rosters of Midlands Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 in 2011, and Omaha Jaycees’ Ten Outstanding Omahans in 2016.

Such accolades have been nice but not mandatory for Hunt, whose pursuits in business and politics have been based on filling a need — hers and the community’s — rather than feeding an ego. “I didn’t grow up dreaming of owning a

business, but I’ve always wanted to create things,” she said. “My first real venture was as a wedding designer, which led me into the world of retail and startups. In 2012 I co-founded Hello Holiday, an e-commerce startup, later opened my own shops, Five Nine and Ceremony, and even created Nebraska’s first coworking space.

“Every one of those ideas came from seeing a need and filling it in a way that felt personal. The hardest part has always been access to capital; you have to believe your ideas and your potential is worth fighting for even when no one else sees the vision yet.”

Hunt’s fighter instincts led her to the state legislature where, as she herself admits, she cuts an unlikely figure as a politician due to a severe distaste for so many elements of public office. (“Campaigning is a nightmare,” she said. “I truly hate it.”)

Still, that didn’t stop her from becoming the first openly bisexual person elected to the Unicameral, as well as the first woman to represent the 8th District. Asked

- MEGAN HUNT

why she did it at all, she simply said somebody had to.

“I ran for office because I got tired of waiting for someone else to do it,” she said. “I saw the issues that mattered to my community being ignored: education, reproductive rights, protections for LGBTQ+ people, housing and health care access.

“In the legislature, I’ve been proud to work on bills that protect foster youth, support reproductive rights, expand voting rights and push back against harmful culture war legislation. What I love most about it is the opportunities to talk to students. I love kids.”

In the statehouse, Hunt quickly gained a reputation for unvarnished opinion and barbed commentary. She’s pulled no punches on topics ranging from January 6 to Gov. Pete Ricketts’ failure to wear a mask in close company during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, she even switched her party registration from Democratic to Independent, saying at the time “the political dysfunction is extreme and at the national level, the parties are ideologically bankrupt.”

On the other hand, Hunt’s direct, no-nonsense style and intense commitment to causes has also paid off, as 65 bills introduced, another 175 co-sponsored and 69 passed and signed into law attest.

“Ernie Chambers taught me that success is just ‘doing what’s available for me to do.’ That mantra has helped me stay grounded. He inspired me to be brave, to take my work seriously but not myself,” she said. “[Public service] has also given me a thicker skin. You learn to take criticism in stride, stay focused and keep doing the work, even when it’s hard.”

In 2020 she launched Shop Five Nine and last year opened Ceremony, employing 18 people between them. Not only have her experiences in the statehouse sharpened her as an entrepreneur but, she said, that street runs both ways.

“Serving in office has made me more intentional. I’m more thoughtful about where my money goes, who I work with and how my businesses reflect my values,” she said. “As a business owner, I know firsthand how policy affects people. I’ve had to navigate health care costs, payroll, supply chains and regulations. It taught me to be pragmatic, to listen and to make policy that actually works in practice.

“Being a lawmaker also showed me just how much people in government don’t understand small business. It’s made me a better advocate for workers, yes, but also for honest, clear policy that doesn’t leave small entrepreneurs behind.”

The current chapter of Hunt’s legislative career comes to a close next year when she’s term-limited out. While she’s unclear about what specifically lies ahead, the interconnected duality of her professional and public service lives have prepared her for almost anything.

“Running a shop and serving as a senator both come down to customer service,”

FIVE FASCINATING FACTS

THE ADVICE I WOULD GIVE MY 15-YEAR-OLD SELF IS “YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO BE OR WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. YOU JUST NEED TO STAY CURIOUS.”

ONE HIDDEN TALENT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT ME IS THAT I AM DEEP INTO TABLETOP AND ONLINE GAMES LIKE DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS AND WORLD OF WARCRAFT. IT GOES WAY DEEPER THAN YOU REALIZE.

MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IS RAISING MY DAUGHTER, ASH, WHILE STAYING TRUE TO MY VALUES IN BOTH BUSINESS AND POLITICS AND SETTING AN EXAMPLE FOR HER OF AN INDEPENDENT AND CONSTANTLY GROWING PERSON. EVERYTHING I DO, I WANT HER TO BE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT SOMEDAY WITH PRIDE.

ONE WORD THAT BEST DESCRIBES ME IS “RELENTLESS.”

MY FAVORITE GUILTY PLEASURE IS SLEEPING IN WITHOUT REGRET. I COULD SLEEP FOREVER, AND I DO, EVERY CHANCE I GET.

she said. “When I’m in my store, I’m helping people find what they need, answering questions, solving problems and creating an experience that makes them feel seen and valued.

“Serving in the legislature is the same. Constituents come to me with their concerns, their fears, their hopes; and it’s my job to listen, respond with care and deliver results. Whether I’m helping someone find the right greeting card or fighting for their health care rights, the heart of the work is the same: showing up for people and earning their trust.”

The Worst May Be Over

HFS has tried to be a voice of reason during these chaotic and polarizing times. There have been several reasons why we’ve remained constructive — none of which are political. The most important of these is our belief in the artificial-intelligence race, which we didn’t think would be slowed by tariffs, softer economic growth or lower government spending. We believe it’s a competitive imperative for companies to keep investing in this powerful technology or risk seeing their business models become marginalized or even obsolete. We feel that no one is better positioned to win this race than the U.S.

Now we’re becoming even more optimistic about this becoming a stock market recovery. There still remain many unknowns but we’re starting to see signs that the worst of this equity selloff might be over. HFS has no proverbial crystal ball. Many shy away from making such proclamations. However, we believe in giving clients our unfiltered opinion about future probabilities.

There are several reasons for our belief. First, the president and White House have started to make optimistic comments regarding trade deals which is a welcome reversal from those made around “liberation day.” Several have stated that they expect to have trade deals with our most important partners, including China, adding that tariffs on that country are currently unsustainable. We acknowledge that this is just talk without much substance for now, but we feel validated with our past argument that the administration’s intentions aren’t as radical as some have claimed.

Another key factor has been rather positive commentary from corporate executives during recent earnings calls. We’re hearing a number of major firms say that they have not seen any major impact to demand thus far and reiterated their full year revenue guidance. This reminds us of 2023 when many economic doomsayers were certain that the consumer was “tapped out” and a recession was imminent, but a lot of individual firms told a different story. Certainly, current conditions can change and some companies are witnessing delayed decisions, but corporate commentary has remained fairly positive.

Lastly, there are a number of sentiment indicators that appear to be bottoming out and improving. For example, the Nasdaq-100 index hasn’t been this oversold during a two-week period since the pandemic. The CBOE volatility index, which is a popular measure of the stock market’s expectations of volatility that is known as the “fear gauge,” appears to be recovering. As we’ve written before, history shows that big spikes in this index have proved to be episodic and not long lasting. Calmer waters tend to attract buyers and sow the seeds of market recoveries.

We know the market narrative is very different than our outlook. It’s hard to see the silver linings in the current environment, especially when it’s been so politicized. However, when we tune out the noise from both sides of the aisle and look around, HFS sees things getting better — not worse.

MIDLANDS LEADERS q&a

CORY GARLOCK, THE GARLOCK GROUP

Midlands Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in the community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. To nominate someone for this section, email news@mbj.com with the individual’s name, position, company and email.

CORY GARLOCK

Bio:

Graduating from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth with a double major in economics and political science, financial adviser Cory Garlock joined RBC Wealth Management, the family firm, and has never looked back. The 2018 RBC Global Citizen Award recipient and tireless community servant is also a 2020 Midlands Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree. In his free time, he enjoys running, meditation and traveling as well as competing in ultramarathons and Ironman triathlon events.

What is the most valuable thing a professional mentor ever taught you?

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever learned came from my father, Buzz Garlock, who’s been both a mentor and a partner to me in this business. He taught me that if you always do what’s right for the client, everything else will fall into place. It’s the guiding principle from which everything else we do is built.

Over the years, I’ve seen this approach lead to stronger relationships, better outcomes and a real sense of purpose. When you put the client first you build trust and with trust you create lasting partnerships that go far beyond just managing money. That philosophy continues to shape how I work today and how our team shows up for the families we serve.

What led you into the financial field in general and to the family firm in particular?

I was lucky enough to grow up around the business. One of my earliest memories is going into the office with my dad on Sundays. I’d help clean while he did research and I can still remember the smell of Lemon Pledge on his desk. Later on, I’d travel with him across Nebraska for 401(k) education meetings where I was the tech support, setting up presentations and managing the slide projector.

So, from early on I saw what financial independence really meant. Clients would reach that moment where they’d pause, take a breath, and say, “OK, everything’s going to be all right.” Helping people get to that place and being the trusted adviser along the way is what made me want to devote my life to this profession.

What elements of the company bear your fingerprints?

When I joined the business 11 years ago, The Garlock Group was a two-person team focused mainly on portfolio management. Since then, we’ve expanded our approach into a truly comprehensive process where today we incorporate

estate planning, tax considerations, risk management and philanthropy into the conversations we have with our clients. It’s no longer just about selecting the right investments, it’s about stepping back and helping clients think through what comes next after they’ve achieved financial independence. That shift led us to create what we now call our GPS Wealth Process. It’s built to help clients grow, protect and steward their assets with purpose.

What community service project(s) are you most proud of and why?

Throughout the years, I’ve been lucky enough to compete in different endurance events like ultramarathons and Ironman, which I’ve used as fundraising campaigns for critical nonprofits. I’ve worked with the Women’s Center for Advancement, Against Malaria Project and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, among others.

However, the community service project I’m most proud

Being involved in the community has made me better at my day job because it keeps me grounded in what really matters. It reminds me that wealth is not just about numbers, it’s about impact, purpose and legacy. Helping clients discover that is what makes this work so meaningful.
