The Future of Community Care

ROSE BLUMKIN JEWISH HOME CELEBRATES GROUNDBREAKING

Driven by the needs of the community, the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home is taking the next steps in re-establishing itself as an innovative and industry-leading provider of long- and short-term nursing care. On June 22, the organization held a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off construction of its 30,000-square-foot expansion. More than 75 people gathered to celebrate the milestone.

Community leaders addressed the crowd and outlined the primary goals of the project: to enhance the quality of life for seniors, to accommodate the growing shortterm therapy needs in Omaha, and to ensure quality services are tailored and available to the next generation of Blumkin Home residents.

The expansion will bring 32 new single-occupancy rooms providing short-term and long-term care patients with private bathrooms and zero-entry showers. New shared spaces will include community living rooms, community dining rooms, a rooftop balcony and a dedicated parking lot. Also included is the creation of the Alan J. Levine

Rehabilitation Center, a short-term rehabilitation wing designed to provide services for community members who need help recovering from illness, injury or surgery.

The Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, an agency of the Jewish Federation of Omaha, currently offers 24-hour licensed nursing care, long-term residential care, Alzheimer’s and dementia care, short-term rehabilitation therapies, respite care and hospice care. It is open to residents of all backgrounds and faiths.

The project is being completed by Sampson Construction and is anticipated to take 13 months.

TOP THINGS TO KNOW

University of Kansas Medical Center, UNMC leading national clinical trials coordinating center

The University of Kansas Medical Center has named the University of Nebraska Medical Center its partner in the institution’s five-year, $31 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to coordinate clinical trials for infants and children in rural and underserved areas.

In partnership with UNMC, KU Medical Center will serve as the Data Coordinating and Operations Center (DCOC) for the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes Institutional Development Award States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network. The grant, awarded earlier this month, is the largest five-year award in the history of KU Medical Center and one of the largest such awards ever received at the University of Kansas.

The DCOC will provide data coordination and biostatistics support, facilitate multisite study design and results dissemination, help coordinate with local health systems and train researchers and clinicians to increase their capacity to conduct pediatric research.

Northeast Lincoln sports complex to add basketball, volleyball courts under $1.2M project

The Lincoln Sports Foundation announced a $1.2 million renovation of its indoor sports complex in northeast Lincoln that will add basketball and volleyball courts.

In a news release, the foundation said construction to upgrade the south half of the former Abbott Sports Complex near North 70th Street and Arbor Road would begin in August and be ready by Nov. 1. The complex will be closed during that time.

The project will be funded through a mix of private donations and money from the Lancaster County Board and its Visitors Promotion Committee. Des Moines-based Phillips Flooring and Bison Inc., a Lincoln-based sports equipment manufacturer, will spearhead the project.

Abandoned Omaha hotel with striking skylights to be restored in $24 million apartment project

A vacant hotel near 72nd and Cedar Streets in central Omaha has seen better days, if one judges a building by the outside. Inside, however, is unfolding a $24 million renovation, launched by Urban Village, that will transform the former Aksarben Suites into a 197-unit apartment complex with an indoor botanical garden, pool and other amenities. The building features twin domed skylights, and a six-story, tiled central courtyard flanked by banks of elevators and ringed by rooms with balconies. The courtyard is currently under renovation, as are many other parts of this hotel, soon to be luxury apartments.

Douglas County Health Department offers guidelines for petfriendly dining areas

In response to a recent change in Nebraska food code, the Douglas County Health Department has released official guidance for restaurants and other food establishments that choose to allow pet dogs in outdoor dining areas. As of April 29, the State of Nebraska adopted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s 2022 Food Code Rule 6-501.115(D), which permits pet dogs in designated outdoor areas of food establishments — provided specific health and safety standards are met.

It is important to note that allowing pet dogs on restaurant patios is entirely optional and left to the discretion of each establishment. Businesses that opt to do so must comply with several requirements, including a separate exterior entrance, doors to the interior that must self-close and remain closed, and several safety rules including that employees must refrain from touching or handling any animal while on duty.

Gov. Pillen, dairy industry and local leaders celebrate groundbreaking of milk processing facility in Seward

Governor Jim Pillen, state and local leaders, and Nebraska’s dairy industry recently celebrated the groundbreaking of a milk processing plant at the Seward Rail Campus. DARI Processing LLC of Rising City — a fourth-generation dairy company run by the Tuls family — is building the facility.

Pillen said in an official release, “Nebraskans raise the finest crops and livestock in America. Instead of shipping these commodities out of state, we can add value to them right

here in Nebraska. I commend Todd and T.J. Tuls for constructing a dairy plant to capture the full value of milk from local dairies.”

DARI Processing expects the new facility to process 1.8 million pounds of milk per day when it reaches full capacity in the coming years. The company anticipates hiring the equivalent of 70 full-time positions at the plant. The company looks to maximize its resources at this location by combining multiple stages of production in Nebraska at a strategic location along Interstate 80.

Nebraska Department of Economic Development announces HOME CHDO award for 2024 program cycle

The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) has announced an award under the Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) cycle of the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program for the 2024 funding cycle. The DED awarded Southeast Nebraska Affordable Housing Council $50,000 for organizational operating expenses.

Nebraska’s 3% unemployment rate is unchanged from last month and sixth lowest nationally

Nebraska’s latest monthly unemployment rate is 3% — same as the previous month and indicating a pattern that returns the rate more steadily to pre-COVID 19 pandemic levels.

Data released by the Nebraska Department of Labor showed the preliminary state unemployment rate ticked up from the revised 2.7% rate for May 2024.

Other labor data revealed that Nebraska ranks No. 6 among states with the lowest seasonally adjusted unemployment rates. The national rate for May 2025 is 4.2%, unchanged from the previous month and up from the 4% reported for May 2024.

Nebraska labor officials have said the higher unemployment rate of late appears to be driven by an increase in the state labor force. For statistical purposes, a person is classified as unemployed from the time they begin searching for work until employed.

The Nebraska Department of Labor reports that the total number of filled non-farm jobs reached a historic high in May, with 1,073,696 jobs.

Celebrating Business Excellence

GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY HELD

The Greater Omaha Chamber annually honors a multitude of businesses and businesspeople that make meaningful contributions to th e community. This community-nominated awards program culminated this year on June 10 with an event that evening at All Makes. The celebrati on started at 4:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour and continued with the presentation of awards.

The awards program began with the recognition of several honorees that had achieved business milestones. Midlands Business Jour nal was among those honored for 50 years in business. Twenty-nine businesses were honored for being in business for 25 years, 22 businesses in Omah a have achieved 50 years in business, and nine businesses were recognized for having been in business for 75 years. In addition, Film Streams’ Dundee Theat er was noted for being around for 100 years, along with Heartland Family Service and Nebraska Humane Society, which have each been in service for 150 years.

Following the milestone recognitions, the Chamber began handing out the awards. This year’s honorees were recognized in the cat egories of civic engagement, culture, innovation and philanthropy.

At the Greater Omaha Chamber, we know that excellence is cultivated — and ultimately achieved — through vision, values, and a relentless work ethic that inspires others in your community to do the same. And the five categories we celebrate — Civic Engagement, Culture, Innovation, Philanthropy, and Business of the Year — represent the best of the best of this mindset. The award winners should be proud of the example they have set for greater Omaha. Their business has helped to shape a more vibrant, more connected, more resilient community,

Civic Engagement

The Civic Engagement Award recognizes organizations that embody civic responsibility — strengthening Omaha through activism and community engagement. They use their resources, expertise and influence to address social challenges, support local causes, and advocate for change.

A-1 United Heating, Air & Electrical, which has helped eight elderly homeowners in 2022, nine in 2023, and seven in 2024. They’ve also replaced HVAC systems for two families in 2024, one of which included a retired veteran and a USPS worker. These efforts highlight A-1 United’s commitment to supporting the Omaha community.

ACCESSbank supports Avenue Scholars — providing internships and career awareness opportunities — and offers financial education through homebuyer classes and partnerships with the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority. Over the past three years, the bank has supported $67 million in community development lending, funding 52 projects in affordable housing, economic development and community services.

Carson Group promotes inclusion in finance, supporting events such as the SER Summit and Excell Represent. The company founded the FinServe Foundation to offer mentorship and internship opportunities.

Goodwill Omaha’s Give for Good Challenge diverted 250,000 pounds of textiles from landfills. The organization’s Sustainability Advisory Council and partnerships enables Goodwill to repurpose plastics into park benches and engages young adults in home rehab through YouthBuild.

Culture

Recipients of the Excellence in Culture award exemplify leadershipdriven social transformation, emphasizing employee well-being, trust and a commitment to shared values. They actively cultivate an atmosphere where people feel valued, supported and inspired to contribute their best work.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands actively promotes regular employee surveys, autonomy and career development support. Its employee-forward culture includes tuition reimbursement, personal strength assessments, annual retreats, a generous PTO program, a longevity leave policy, flexible work schedules and a dedicated mother’s room.

NEI Global Relocation fosters a supportive and transparent culture by promoting open communication and well-being for employees. Benefits of working at NEI include flexible work options, wellness programs and a focus on work-life balance.

Ronald McDonald House Charities prioritizes a supportive and positive culture. Staff meetings include the sharing of personal experiences to bring about a sense of community. Employee-friendly policies include unlimited paid time off, infant-at-work acceptance, sabbatical leave for long-tenured employees and equitable wages.

Thrasher Foundation Repair establishes a clear purpose, mission and values. Company managers are trained to lead with accountability and team bonding. Information provided by the Chamber stated the president “knows every employee by name.”

WoodmenLife (Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society) focuses on core values such as passion, service, inclusion, collaboration and open-mindedness. These values are emphasized through regular communication, leadership meetings and community involvement.

Innovation

The Greater Omaha Chamber recognized several companies for Excellence in Innovation, each of which exemplify innovation every day.

Blair Freeman partners with nonprofits, public sector agencies and private developers across the region, and its leadership actively advocates for workforce development. The company’s service portfolio includes mentorship programs for subcontractors and development consulting services designed to help emerging businesses thrive.

Cobalt Credit Union has invested heavily in digital banking innovations, including intuitive mobile apps, AI-driven fraud protection systems and online financial literacy programs. The company also organizes financial education programs for youth, first-time homebuyers and underserved communities.

Cordia delivers sustainable, resilient energy solutions. Its customized energy infrastructure solutions help major institutions meet emissions targets while improving operational efficiency and cost predictability. The company does so by piloting innovating technology and integrating renewable energy into older systems. Corida also focuses on environmental stewardship in other ways, such as resource management.

ProsperSpark builds solutions using technology that works with clients’ needs. This tech-forward company has actively worked with Power BI analytics and AI-driven tools, recognizing the growing demand for advanced data insights and decision-making support. ProsperSpark continues to transform processes, unlock efficiencies, and help organizations of all sizes adapt to a technologydriven future.

Riekes Equipment delivers customized solutions for its clients. The company’s expertise includes advanced fleet management systems, robotic forklifts and warehouse design consulting, blending cutting-edge technology with decades of practical experience. Riekes also promotes green initiatives within warehouse management from energy-efficient equipment to resourceconserving layouts.

Philanthropy

The winners in this category have a philosophy of giving back and making a significant impact on the Omaha metropolitan community’s health and well-being.

Centris Federal Credit Union encourages its staff to use paid volunteer time off, contributing thousands of service hours annually to local causes. The company’s community grant program has given $100,000 to 16 nonprofit organizations. The application review process allows Centris to learn and connect with many nonprofits that are doing tremendous work and impacting many lives throughout Nebraska and Iowa.

FiberFirst has only been in Omaha for two years, but the company has already made a huge impact. In 2024, FiberFirst sponsored digital literacy programs aimed at seniors and low-income families, donated Wi-Fi hotspots to public libraries, and partnered with nonprofits to expand internet access in underserved neighborhoods. Employees can be seen at neighborhood clean-ups, community tech days, and STEM education events at local schools and community centers.

Nebraska Furniture Mart remains committed to Omaha. In 2024, NFM donated significant products, funding and services to charitable organizations including food security programs, housing nonprofits, educational initiatives and workforce readiness efforts. The company’s disaster relief contributions help families recover and rebuild after natural emergencies. This commitment to community extends to employees, who regularly volunteer for mentoring programs, food drives and blood donation campaigns.

Turner Construction partners with local nonprofits that promote social equity, housing access and career opportunities. Employees are part of a mentoring program which helps introduce high school students to potential careers in architecture, construction and engineering. In 2024, Turner Omaha employees volunteered over 1,000 hours, demonstrating a strong commitment to community service beyond the construction site.

Business of the Year

The final award of the evening was presented to Flood Communications, as Business of the Year. The media network was noted for uniquely connecting with communities that are often underserved. Radio Lobo and Telemundo Nebraska have become staples in Nebraska’s Hispanic communities, while News Channel Nebraska has stations such as KSID in Sidney and Ol’ Red in Fairbury which reach rural audiences with stories that matter locally. At a time when many media companies are scaling back, Flood is investing in reporters, cameras and platforms to create authentic, community-first content.

The company’s focus on hyperlocal stories has made an impact. To date, Flood operates 26 radio and TV stations and employs more than 200 employees across 11 offices statewide. Together, they produce news, radio and social media content that resonates deeply — and their digital footprint has grown to surpass that of any other media company in Nebraska.

CEO Andy Ruback noted that the company “built platforms like News Channel Nebraska and Telemundo Nebraska for local connection,” saying that the award was “humbling.”

WE ASK YOU!

WHY IS THE GREATER OMAHA AREA THE RIGHT PLACE FOR YOUR BUSINESS TO THRIVE?

“Omaha is a rare blend of big-city opportunity and small-town values. It’s a place where relationships still matter, where people rally around community, and where entrepreneurs can build something meaningful that serves both. For our business, which is rooted in service and storytelling, there’s no better environment. We’re able to attract great talent, test innovative ideas, and stay close to the communities we serve, from urban neighborhoods to rural towns across Nebraska.”

WHAT KEY DECISIONS LED TO THIS LEVEL OF SUCCESS?

“We made a conscious decision to serve audiences and advertisers that others overlooked, especially in rural Nebraska and among our Hispanic communities. That meant building original local TV stations, launching

Telemundo Nebraska, investing in digital marketing services for small-town businesses, and producing more live events and sports than any other Nebraska broadcaster. We grew by acquiring radio and TV stations across the state and staffing them with local teams who know their communities inside and out. Most importantly, we built a culture that values responsiveness, creativity and doing the right thing, even when it’s hard.”

WHAT LEGACY DO YOU WANT YOUR BUSINESS TO LEAVE IN OMAHA?

“We want to be remembered as the company that brought visibility and voice to all corners of Nebraska, from rural towns to urban neighborhoods. That we built platforms like News Channel Nebraska and Telemundo Nebraska not just as businesses, but as lifelines for local connection. That we created opportunities — both for the communities we serve and for the 200 people who work with us. And that we proved you can build a fast-growing media company in Nebraska, for Nebraska, that never loses sight of its mission to serve.”

CELEBRATING business excellence

WE ASK YOU!

For the past 50 years, the Midlands Business Journal has been a leading voice promoting the business and industry of greater Omaha. During that time we’ve asked a lot of people a lot of questions, and that’s the thinking behind We Ask You! — where we get feedback from a segment of the business community. This week, in honor of 2025 Greater Omaha Chamber’s Business Excellence Awards, we polled honorees post-event.

What are one or two things your business is proud of as it relates to the category in which you won?

OMAHA STORE DIRECTOR, NFM PHILANTHROPY WINNER

“At NFM, we’re in the business of improving lives, and that commitment extends beyond our showrooms. We’re proud of our 88-year legacy of giving back to the Omaha community. What truly stands out is our ongoing support of local organizations through both financial contributions and hands-on volunteerism, from children’s hospitals to educational programs to disaster relief. For us, philanthropy means more than writing checks; it’s about showing up, giving our time, and using our resources to create lasting impact. Making a real difference in people’s lives is what motivates us every day.”

CORDIA INNOVATION WINNER

“We’re honored and excited to accept the Innovation Award! This recognition highlights our continued commitment to decarbonization and sustainability, including our efforts in water conservation and the meaningful steps we’ve already taken to decarbonize our district energy system. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made and the impact we’re creating. Just as importantly, we’re proud of the strong internal culture that powers our work. Our team’s dedication to safety and their deep engagement with our mission, vision and values are what truly drive our success. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.”

“We have seen one staff turn over on the leadership team in the past eight-plus years; we love it here just as much as our families do. We take pride and love seriously when it comes to providing hope and healing. That goes for the way we treat each other internally and the way we lean into helping families. We want every person who stays with us to know that you can trust this team to help take care of you, because we see you as an individual first and everything else comes second. That’s intrinsic to our values. What a gift to be a part of a community that also celebrates this type of culture.”

DAWN GONZALES

VICE PRESIDENT OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS, CENTRIS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

PHILANTHROPY WINNER

“Over the last three years, Centris has invested over $250,000 annually in the communities we serve. Our employees engage in a biannual employee apparel sale, which has raised over $60,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association of Nebraska, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the American Cancer Society, and Credit Unions for Kids benefitting Children’s Nebraska. For the past 13 years, Centris has sponsored and provided volunteers for the Nebraska Prostate Cancer Alliance’s ‘Cruisin’ for a Cure.’ Last year, 155 PSA tests were provided, and 16 men were notified that they had elevated scores. Over the years, we know of 10 men who have had a high PSA number and were diagnosed with cancer. All have been successfully treated. One individual let us know that because of his score and physician follow-up, his aggressive form of prostate cancer was detected early. ‘This free test helped save my life,’ he said.

In 2023, Centris launched a community grant program and has given $100,000 to 16 nonprofits. The application review process allows us to learn and connect with many nonprofits that are doing tremendous work and impacting so many lives throughout Nebraska and Iowa.”

TOM

“Being honored with the Civic Engagement Award by the Chamber is a meaningful reflection of who we strive to be as a bank and as people. We’re proud of our investments in community development lending, home ownership and small business support. But just as important is showing up, lending our time, sharing our expertise, and doing the behind-the-scenes work that quietly moves things forward. One example is our Be Kind program, which empowers each employee with $500 to donate to a cause or individual of their choice. It has made an impact, supporting families in crisis, enhancing schools and filling gaps that traditional funding often overlooks.

Being a strong community partner means putting capital to work where it matters. In our most recent CRA cycle, we provided over $65 million across 50-plus projects supporting affordable housing, small business growth, neighborhood revitalization and more. These weren’t just loans, they were investments in Omaha’s future. When I look at all we’ve accomplished, it’s clear that we’re not just in the community, we’re here for the community. This recognition isn’t just about being a good bank. It’s about being a good neighbor.”

“At Cobalt Credit Union, innovation is more than just technology — it’s about making our members’ lives easier, safer and more connected to their finances. We recently overhauled our online and mobile banking services providing members with stronger fraud protection, clearer insights into their finances, and a more seamless experience across devices. Whether they’re paying bills, transferring funds or checking balances, it’s all faster and more secure. We’ve also added live chat, text banking and video banking to provide members with more convenient ways to connect anytime, anywhere.

“Innovation is a continuous journey. We’re always looking ahead, asking ourselves how we can better serve our members and keep information safe in an increasingly digital world. This recognition from the Omaha Chamber is a reflection of that ongoing commitment and we’re honored to share it with our dedicated team and our incredible members.”

“At WoodmenLife, we are proud of the way our culture is lived out daily — from the executive level to every associate. One of the most meaningful aspects of our culture is our commitment to values like Passion for Members, Service to Others, Inclusion, Collaborative Spirit and Open-mindedness. These aren’t just words, they’re embedded in how we lead, communicate and serve. Our leadership team is actively engaged in fostering this culture through visibility, volunteerism and authentic connection with our teams.

“We’re also proud of the intentional investment we’ve made in leadership development. Our coaching program equips leaders with the tools to build high-performing, collaborative teams. This initiative has strengthened engagement and productivity across the organization. In fact, 92% of our home office leadership roles are filled internally — a testament to our culture of growth and opportunity.

“Together, these efforts have created a workplace where people feel valued, supported and inspired to do their best work.”

BRANDON ZOBEL

CEO AND OWNER, PROSPERSPARK INNOVATION WINNER

“We are proud to have grown to 500-plus clients in just over seven years in business. It’s incredibly challenging to start a business and it’s even harder to keep it going if you’re in the technology industry where things are ever-changing.

“ProsperSpark has been focused on delivering a top-notch client experience. In order to do that, we utilize technologies and processes that are new and innovative. For example, we utilize AI within internal automations we’ve built to analyze (clients’) initial message to us and update our CRM.”

DAN THRASHER

CULTURE WINNER

“We’re proud of a lot of things, but most of all, we’re proud of our people and the culture they’ve built over the last 50 years. You don’t get to 50 years in business by accident; you get there by showing up for each other, building something you believe in and by creating a place where people feel seen, supported and challenged to grow.

Our culture is rooted in that kind of care for our customers, our communities and each other. We’ve always believed that if we take care of our people, they’ll take care of the rest and after five decades of doing this work, we can say with confidence that belief holds up. It’s what’s allowed us to serve tens of thousands of homeowners; it’s what’s created real careers and real impact; and it’s what will carry us into the next 50 years.”

TOBI MATHOUSER

“Goodwill Omaha has been a cornerstone of the community for 90 years, offering gently-used items to support its mission of empowering individuals to realize their maximum potential through the power of work. Over the decades we have adapted and grown, creating programs that give second chances to those in need while focusing on providing affordable goods and expanding our sustainability efforts.

“Goodwill Omaha drives civic engagement through sustainability initiatives that mobilize the community to reduce waste and support economic opportunity. In 2024, we launched the Give for Good Challenge, encouraging residents to donate textiles for recycling rather than resale — tackling the 11.3 million tons of textile waste discarded annually in the U.S. In 2024 alone we diverted nearly 20 million pounds, of which we recycled nearly 9 million pounds of unwanted materials.

“Our donation and recycling challenge engages businesses and policymakers to reduce landfill waste by 50% by 2035. Additionally, we formed a Sustainability Advisory Council in collaboration with UNO, UNL, Hillside Solutions and other organizations, to advance communitywide waste reduction strategies.”

INNOVATION WINNER

“Riekes Equipment has been part of the Midwest business landscape since 1936, helping companies navigate warehouse and material handling challenges through changing times and technologies. Our roots are deep and our mindset and employees are always moving forward.

“We built the Riekes Discovery Center to give people a chance to see real solutions in action. It started as a way to show what we do but became something more. Today, it’s where clients, students and new employees experience the full scope of what material handling can be and often discover answers they didn’t know they were looking for.

“Our approach has always been to combine practical experience with the best tools available. We work with trusted manufacturers but what sets us apart is how we bring those pieces together. Our culture values safety, curiosity and teamwork — qualities that have shaped our reputation over generations

“We’re proud of where we’ve been and even more excited about where we’re going. At Riekes, innovation isn’t new. It’s always been part of who we are.”

NICHOLE TURGEON

PRESIDENT AND CEO, BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE MIDLANDS

CULTURE WINNER

“At Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands, we believe that a thriving culture is the foundation of meaningful impact. Being recognized with the 2025 Business Excellence Award in the Culture category by the Greater Omaha Chamber is a tremendous honor that reflects the heart of our organization: our people. We are especially proud of our commitment to employee well-being and professional growth which has resulted in an average staff tenure of over five years, more than triple the national nonprofit average. Our culture is built on trust, flexibility and a shared mission. This award affirms that when we invest in our people, they, in turn, invest deeply in the youth and families we serve.”

RACHEL LARSON

COMMUNITY BRAND MANAGER, FIBERFIRST PHILANTHROPY WINNER

“As a business that provides internet connectivity throughout the communities we serve, connecting to the community itself is a top priority for FiberFirst. By supporting local nonprofits and events, providing a platform for small businesses to advertise at no charge, volunteering at local nonprofits and partnering to provide free internet service to two north Omaha-based organizations, we are community partners are much as we are a service provider, which is a symbiotic relationship that benefits north Omaha as a whole.”

Tamara Hills of running shoe manufacturer Brooks Running credits the popularity of company-sponsored outdoor activities and fitness challenges, in part, to the lasting effects of the pandemic and how it changed the way people think about and prioritize their health.

“We now see a multidimensional draw toward wellness with people of all generations seeking activities to improve their physical, social and mental health,” said Hills, the company’s chief of staff, corporate relations. “For many, event participation is more about community, connection and experience rather than the finish line.”

Gen Z is also driving momentum for running and, more broadly, holistic healthy living, Hills said.

“Hosting or sponsoring activities that align with a target audience’s wellness ambitions is an impactful way for companies and brands to connect with consumers on a deeper level,” she said.

Inspired by nature

In many ways, Brooks’ home base in Seattle embodies the ideal natural setting for inspiring outdoor activities.

“The trails, greenery, mountains, parks and waterfront all inspire us to move and to create products that help others find movement — and joy — in their lives, no matter what environment they see out their front door,” Hills said.

Finding joy, she emphasized, is essential.

“We know that for Gen Z, mental health has been destigmatized,” she said.

EMPLOYEES OF HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATIONS, SUCH AS METHODIST, ARE OFTEN BIG SUPPORTERS OF WELLNESS ACTIVITIES

“Contrary to prior generations, they talk openly about their mental health and claim it is the No. 1 reason they engage in running.”

Closer to home, the 11th running of the Brooks Invest in Yourself 5K at the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders Meeting broke records.

“For the first time, this year’s 5K sold out, surpassing last year’s record registrations by 14% with participants ranging in ages from 4 to 89,” she said.

While the race has always included a donation component to support Special Olympics Nebraska and Girls Inc. of Omaha, Hills said Brooks also engaged the local chapter of Marathon Kids in 2024 and 2025. The school-based nonprofit is dedicated to helping kids discover running and combating youth inactivity.

“This year we hosted 140 program participants from three Omaha schools, providing each student with a pair of Brooks shoes and a bright yellow shirt,” Hills said. “Spectators could spot them and cheer even louder as they made their way along the course to accomplish a huge goal.”

A noble cause

Entering its 45th year, the Corporate Cup is one of Omaha’s longest-running (pun intended) traditions, according to American Lung Association in Nebraska Executive Director Julia McCarville.

“Tens of thousands of participants have raised millions of dollars for the mission of the American Lung Association,” McCarville said. “Our nonprofit organization works to defeat lung cancer, improve the air we breathe, reduce the burden of lung disease

on individuals and their families (and) eliminate tobacco use and tobacco-related diseases.”

Founded 120 years ago by volunteers dedicated to ending another lung health scourge — tuberculosis — the association’s work is possible through community support. McCarville said 90 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to education, research and advocacy.

“Company-sponsored outdoor activities like the American Lung Association’s Corporate Cup are popular because they foster connection and camaraderie among colleagues, while supporting the Lung Association’s mission to improve lung health and prevent lung disease, creating a healthier community both inside and outside the workplace,” she stated.

The outdoor element of outdoor activities is particularly apropos for an organization like McCarville’s.

“Clean air is essential for healthy lungs,” she said. “The American Lung Association works to ensure that the air we breathe indoors and outdoors is clean and safe from harmful pollution.”

McCarville also referenced how events like their race provide opportunities for employees to challenge themselves, impact the community and leave their mark on Omaha history.

Blue-ribbon wellness culture

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska is among organizations mobilizing workforces to get moving for health and good causes. For instance, BCBSNE is a longtime sponsor of Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth, which Wellbeing Coordinator Carrie Kahnk said is coming off of a record-breaking year in benefiting individuals in need of utility assistance.

“At Blue Cross, we’re committed to showing up for our members and communities across the state, and one of the most meaningful ways we do that is by supporting local events that promote health and well-being,” Kahnke said. “Their involvement in these local events not only strengthens our connection with the community but also promotes their own health and well-being through active engagement.”

Kahnk said employee well-being starts with opportunities to connect with each other and leadership.

“One of our most popular initiatives, Stepping with Leadership, invites employees to join executives and senior leaders for a monthly walk or run,” she said. “It’s a chance to enjoy fresh air, collaborate and strengthen our company culture.”

Such outdoor activities and fitness challenges, Kahnk indicated, align well with BCBSNE’s support of member/communitywide health across the state, from Scottsbluff’s Monument Marathon to Crofton’s Dam Race and the Born & Raced in Nebraska 10K.

THE POWER OF OUTDOOR WELLNESS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The key to successful engagement is choosing initiatives that resonate with your workforce.

BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF NEBRASKA

Even comparatively simple breaks outdoors promote the clarity employees need to help members live their best and healthiest lives, according to Kahnk.

“Our headquarters in Aksarben give us so many opportunities to be outside, whether for community events, a run or walk during lunch or taking a walking meeting around Stinson Park,” she said.

When asked about wellness “winners,” Kahnk noted how they incentivize biometric screenings to encourage employees to know their numbers.

“During the most recent round of screenings, four employees received results that spurred them to follow up with their doctors,” she said. “Thanks to the early detection the biometric screenings provide, they’re taking proactive steps to address their health.”

Ready, set, go

Cultures that move, thrive; at least that’s the case with Brooks, according to Hills.

“One of our core values is ‘Keep Moving,’ whether that’s running or simply finding a way to move every day,” she said. “We offer access to a state-of-the-art gym, on-site fitness classes, discounts on Brooks’ gear and wellness reimbursements.”

Hills said the value of “There’s No ‘I’ in Run” complements “Keep Moving,” and centers on being generous with one’s humanity and the notion that no one can do alone what all can do together.

“Moving together to make a difference is far more impactful than doing it solo. That’s not just because there’s power in numbers, it’s about purpose and connection,” she said. “It boosts companywide engagement, collaboration, productivity, accountability and morale, ultimately driving business success.”

When asked about ways other workplaces can get their teams moving, Hills circled back to how nearly every race today has a charitable component.

“Those looking to rally corporate teams to participate in fitness programs or races might consider an event that benefits a cause tied to their company purpose, or is deemed important by your workforce,” she said.

Hills urged people to communicate that connection. To find events of various types and distances, she suggested seeking out local specialty running stores like Peak Performance, a favorite of Warren Buffett.

McCarville emphasized how the Corporate Cup is not a one-day-and-done event, but rather a year-round activity.

“Runners and walkers can start training for our next cup during the summer/fall months,” she said. Registration for the April 19, 2026, Corporate Cup opens shortly after July 4.

While everyone loves a little friendly competition, Kahnk said BCBSNE has also found successful participation and impact when choosing initiatives that resonate.

“At Blue Cross, our events align with our mission to champion the health and wellbeing of our communities,” she said.

Investing in Activity

EMPLOYEE WELLNESS CREATES ENGAGEMENT

DAN SHERIDAN CEO, BROOKS RUNNING

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL RECENTLY INTERVIEWED DAN SHERIDAN, CEO OF BROOKS RUNNING, ABOUT THE INVEST IN YOURSELF 5K, EMPLOYEE WELLNESS, AND MORE.

Q: With this being the largest participation yet for the Invest in Yourself 5K, what specific metrics are you tracking to measure the success of this partnership beyond traditional brand exposure, and how does sponsoring corporate wellness events align with Brooks’ long-term business strategy?

This year’s Invest in Yourself 5K actually sold out, surpassing last year’s record registrations by 14%! It was an amazing cap to a historic Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholder Meeting where we also sold nearly 2,000 Brooks running shoes. We have created a moment that many people look forward to every year and have seen it grow in popularity. We’re also seeing a rise in participation in community races across the country, and even around the world. Brooks’ business starts in the running community from 5Ks to local run clubs and we are immersed in the fabric of run culture. Events like the Invest in Yourself 5K in Omaha highlight how we show up and connect to runners and walkers from the most competitive to those who are simply seeking movement.

Q: Warren Buffett has famously said that taking care of your body is like maintaining the only car you’ll ever own. How do you see Brooks’ role in helping companies shift from viewing employee wellness as a cost center to recognizing it as a competitive advantage and investment in human capital?

One of Brooks’ core values is “Keep Moving.” We have a company culture — and a leadership team — that embrace and encourage movement. It’s paramount to our success and the cornerstone of our business. We wouldn’t be the leader in performance run in the most competitive category in sporting goods without a workforce that’s passionate about, and driven by, movement. It’s absolutely fundamental to our company culture, and ultimately our business success.

Q: Based on your observations working with companies like Berkshire Hathaway, what patterns have you noticed between organizations that prioritize employee physical wellness and their overall business performance, retention rates and innovation capacity?

From our perspective as a company that places a high focus on employee wellness, we have seen a more engaged workforce, one that remains passionate about the run and the runner. This in turn helps fuel our work to create the most innovative products at a rapid pace for the runner and has helped Brooks maintain a leadership position in performance run for the last 20 years.

Q: The event focuses on “investing in yourself.” How do you balance encouraging individual responsibility for wellness while also advocating for systemic changes that companies need to make to truly support their employees’ health and well-being?

Business is a team sport. At Brooks, we encourage our teams to participate in group wellness activities whether it’s a strength training class in our state-of-the-art gym or joining the Brooks team for our companywide run club. We also empower our employees to take ownership of their journey. It takes both initiative and teamwork to succeed.

Q: As we see more companies integrating wellness into their core business strategies post-pandemic, where do you see the biggest opportunities and gaps in how corporations can better support their employees’ physical and mental health, and how

is Brooks positioning itself to be part of that solution?

We’re seeing individual investment in holistic health and wellness on a global level. And, I believe we have a generational shift happening. We have a strong coalition of generations prioritizing physical and mental health — running and movement — in their lives. Companies that acknowledge and embrace this shift — offering employee wellness benefits and encouraging employees to prioritize an active and healthy lifestyle — will set the stage for increased job satisfaction and a more dedicated and engaged workforce. In that way, Brooks leads by example. The way we show up as a brand — from community races to brand partnerships and everything in between — positions us as a true advocate of the transformative power of the run, spotlighting the importance of physical and mental health to not just our customers, but our employees as well.

Q: What is the partnership with Marathon Kids and your shared commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and running benefits, especially for young people?

Marathon Kids does such an amazing job of educating youth about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and we are extremely proud to support their mission. The self-confidence these kids develop, the lessons in goal setting, and experiencing a team environment so young establishes a strong foundation for prioritizing a healthy lifestyle well into the future. Over 140 local Omaha students participated in the Invest in Yourself 5K through Marathon Kids’ local chapter. They all received free race registration and, of course, Brooks shoes. Brooks is committed to helping running programs and teams across the U.S. to make sure young people who want to run have the chance to fulfill that meaningful goal. It was so incredible to see all those kids at the race in Omaha. The more young people that embrace running early on, the healthier and happier those kids will be in the long run.

Q: What is the partnership’s impact on the local Omaha community?

With Brooks’ commitment to helping youth running programs and teams across the country and Marathon Kids’ dedication to changing the youth inactivity epidemic through free, interactive running clubs, the partnership extends well beyond race day. The Marathon Kids local chapter works with 23 participating schools comprised of Omaha, Lincoln and Millard Public Schools; over 1,100 students have conquered over 37,000 miles this school year. We hope the partnership with Marathon Kids will continue to have a lasting impact on the youth in the area by exposing a new generation to the benefits of running. Brooks is, and will continue to be, a company that focuses on running at the community level and we look forward to watching these kids embrace the run, bring their friends along for the run, and reap the benefits of the run for years to come.

Q: How do current running industry trends and Brooks Running’s strategic vision align?

Brooks will always maintain a relentless focus on the runner and work to provide the best products for the run. We see participation continuing to grow, both in the U.S. and overseas, and have a growth plan in place to capitalize on the global popularity of running. The rise of running that began during the pandemic is sticky; it’s more of a cultural movement than even a running boom, and we are working hard to meet runners where they are: run clubs, meetups, community events and races on a global scale. Brooks will continue to focus on innovation, delivering the best products that provide the ultimate fit, feel and ride for the runner.

A-1 Flags, Poles and Repair, LLC

Showing

the Flag A-1 KEEPS OLD GLORY FLYING PROUDLY

A-1 Flags, Poles and Repair can be summed up by its very name: it’s a niche business that primarily provides flagpole installation, maintenance and repair. A-1 also sells American, state, international, college, sports, custom logo and seasonal flags to residential and commercial customers.

Ryan Tasich, who owns the business with wife Kati, likes to say that for any random flagpole flying Old Glory seen by someone in the community, there is a good chance he either installed or repaired it at some point. That claim is not a stretch; Tasich started his career in the flag industry 25 years ago.

“I graduated high school on a Friday and started doing flagpoles on Monday,” he said. “My dad — he’s an electrician — was driving a 72-foot crane truck and he would stand the flagpoles up for the company I ended up working for. That company said, ‘Hey, we’re pretty busy. You know anyone looking for a job?’ … The rest is history.”

A true passion

For over a decade, Tasich gained expertise in the flag and flagpole business working for others. He left the sector briefly but said he was drawn back to what he realized was his “true passion.” In 2016, the Tasiches launched A-1 with Ryan serving as weekday caregiver to the couple’s toddler son in addition to handling the field work. Eventually, Kati was able to leave her outside job and go all-in with the growing endeavor.

Ryan said he strived to maintain good relationships with his former employer and competitors in the flagpole business. Now they refer business to him, especially some of the heavier jobs more suited to a younger man.

“It is a niche. The few companies that are in town, they either send me the job or they tell the people to call us,” he said. “When they get things they don’t have time for or don’t have a lift truck or whatever, they send them to us, too. Unless the construction company puts up

their own pole, it’s pretty much me and Kati doing this.”

Ryan said one of the reasons his work appeals to him is that organizations and homeowners deliberately choose to install a pole and hoist a flag.

“It’s a want, it’s not a need,” he said. “I’ve seen, especially veterans, shed a tear, salute the flag. It’s a big deal when somebody gets a flagpole in their yard … it means something.”

Service personnel have always been important customers, Kati said. “We do offer 10% off for a military, police and first responders’ discount on all of our merch all of the time,” she said.

Respecting the stars and stripes

A-1 has also become a trusted resource for community members with questions on flag etiquette from proper display to respectful disposal of worn-out flags, she added.

“A service we provide is flag change-outs, which includes disposing of your old flag, hanging the new flag, checking over your rigging and rope and doing preventative maintenance on pole parts,” Kati said. “We do this for a $10 trip charge aside from the cost of the flag.”

Business is brisk for A-1, with installation somewhat seasonal but repair jobs continuing throughout the winter.

“We’re as busy installing flagpoles as we are repairing,” Ryan said. “It’s demanding running your own business. You know, people calling you at seven, eight o’clock at night or on Sunday morning … You don’t stop working when you own your own business.”

The Tasiches now have a daughter in addition to their son, and Ryan said he hopes one or both of them will someday join in the business. As he pointed out, A-1 has already made its mark all over the community.

“I’m sure my kids get tired of hearing me saying, ‘I did that,’” he said, with a laugh.

J&M Displays

What a Blast!

J&M Displays was established in 1980 by brothers James and Michael Oetken — the J and the M in the company name — who started out as mere hobbyists. The company has since grown to become the largest shipper of fireworks in the state of Iowa, with headquarters in Yarmouth, Iowa, near Des Moines, and facilities around the country supplying the firepower for magnificent outdoor fireworks displays and amazing pyrotechnics.

Ted Kallhoff, a sales manager who’s been with J&M 40 years, said locals have seen the company’s creations for numerous events such as Holiday Lights Festival, an annual Memorial Park show and the College World Series.

“There aren’t many of the big shows here in town that we don’t do,” Kallhoff said. “We’re basically one of the top five companies in the United States for fireworks.”

Lighting up the night

Regional and national clients include college and professional sports teams, he said.

“United Soccer League, we handle all their championships,” he said. “We handle, of course, University of Nebraska… We handle Iowa, Missouri, Texas Tech, LSU, we will be handling Oklahoma this year. It keeps us busy.”

Outdoor fireworks shows involve careful planning and exquisite attention to both creative and technical detail, Kallhoff said. J&M’s quality standards mean using exclusive products made to its specifications and stateof-the-art equipment operated by trained and experienced technicians. The team can also guide clients through permits and safety inspections.

Fireworks shows have become more elaborate and awe-inspiring, with 3-D effects, synchronized music, and simulated animation made possible by technical advancements like simulation software and remote ignition.

J&M’s late co-founder Michael Oetken served as CFO and was also instrumental in developing special software programs for the company. Automation has also improved safety for both pyrotechnicians and spectators.

everything,” Kallhoff said. “Back then, we were still lighting with flares, it was hand-light everything … We’ve gotten to the point now where we have systems that are completely wireless and we use them in a lot of stadiums … I can wrap all the way around the stadium with wireless and not have to worry about how it looks, it’s that good of a system.”

Looking back, Kallhoff said the company’s growth is not only a reflection of quality execution using the best products, but also an outstanding team.

“We like to think it’s customer service,” he said. “We take care of the customer and try and give them exactly what they’re asking for.”

Other dazzling options

Over time, J&M Displays has expanded beyond fireworks to meet the needs of a greater number of clients. When fallout space is limited, proximate pyrotechnic shows can be staged on rooftops, inside stadiums and arenas and at other outdoor venues. Flame effects shows from burning logos to flame cyclones are another dazzling option, especially in cities that do not allow full-scale or proximate pyrotechnics.

Night sky display options also continue to evolve. In 2022, Kallhoff and business partner Don Wisnieski founded an associated company, Fantasy Drone Shows, to create preprogrammed shows using as few as 150 to as many as 1,000-plus lighted drones, which can stand alone or enhance fireworks shows.

“The thing about the drone shows is we can put anything in the sky,” Kallhoff said. “Now we can put logos in the sky … we’ve done as much as a QR code for (a client). There’s just so much we can do that we wouldn’t even dream about doing with fireworks. The market is growing all the time.”

Omaha Marine Center

Legacy

TURNING GENERATIONAL PASSION INTO YEAR-ROUND SUCCESS

At Omaha Marine Center, boats are more than a summer hobby.

For owner Paul Davis, they’re the heart of a family legacy. Built on more than 45 years of service, the business continues to grow — on the water and now on the slopes — with a commitment to education, safety and customer experience that sets it apart in the Midwest.

“My family has always worked in the marine or boating industry,” Davis said. “I’ve spent my life learning every facet of the business before eventually purchasing it from my father.”

From sales to service, Davis’s goal has always been to carry on a legacy — one that prioritizes expertise and delivers what he calls “the best fullservice experience” to every customer. He credits his early exposure to the industry for shaping the company’s customer-first culture.

Today, Omaha Marine Center is a trusted name for boat sales, maintenance and repairs across Nebraska. The business also offers classes and personalized training centered around safety and seamless operation. Whether a first-time buyer or a seasoned boater, every client gets the same care and attention.

Service First

Keeping up with changing trends and technology is a challenge Davis welcomes.

“We stay educated on all the requirements from our manufacturers and maintain our certifications,” he said, “but it’s the service after the sale that really sets us apart.”

Customers receive in-depth boat demonstrations and one-on-one instruction at the lake facility, with follow-up support long after delivery.

“Education is a huge part of what we do,” Davis said. “We host Coast Guard safety classes and work with more than 100 local lake associations to support their unique needs.”

In 2007, Davis added a new dimension to the business, a snow ski and snowboard business. He quipped that initially it was just to

support internal interest in winter sports, but has since grown into a thriving business segment.

Running in the marine off-season, the snow sports division now functions as a standalone enterprise — quadrupling in size and offering tuning, repair and sales for skis, snowboards, boots and bindings.

“It just continues to grow,” Davis said. “It fits our mission to support the outdoor lifestyle year-round.”

The expansion also allowed the business to retain top talent through all seasons.

“We’re able to keep our staff year-round, which is rare in this industry,” Davis said. “That consistency builds trust with our customers and strengthens our team.”

Lessons and Legacy

Through decades of ownership, Davis said the most valuable lesson he’s learned is patience.

“Keep investing your time, energy and experience into educating your staff and your customers,” he said. “That’s how you create the best on-the-water experience.”

That approach has earned Omaha Marine Center national recognition. The business has been named a Top 100 Dealer by the Marine Retailers Association for 19 consecutive years and voted Best of Omaha for more than two decades.

“Our boating experience center lets people test boats before they buy and learn how to use them confidently,” Davis said. “We host summer events, stay on top of trends and always look ahead.”

When asked what advice he’d give his younger self, Davis didn’t hesitate.

“Family first — always,” he said. “Your hard work will pay off. Keep growing, stay vigilant, and always deliver the kind of service that keeps your customers coming back.”

TODD MURPHY LOOKS FOR HIS NEXT BIG OPPORTUNITY

As a longtime entrepreneur, team builder and thought leader, Todd Murphy has seen a little bit of everything. Lately, however, his career has wound into some decidedly unfamiliar territory — that of finding himself between gigs — practically for the first time since the native Omahan graduated from the University of WisconsinMadison.

Murphy finds himself in this position not due to a downturn in the economy or a global pandemic or the continued race of technology, although he weathered and mastered both during his time leading Universal Information Services.

The media monitoring company, which traces its roots to 1908 as Universal Press Clippings Bureau, was acquired by his father in the late 1950s. Though hard to imagine in today’s era of Google and artificial intelligence which puts the world at anyone’s fingertips, businesses such as UPCB were singularly indispensible to companies for keeping up with what media around the world were saying about them.

The media industry, of course, looks nothing like what it did in the 1950s. When Todd

Murphy came aboard the company in the 1990s, he’d soon oversee building the bridge by which the company entered the digital age. Looking back, there’s much to admire about how the company adapted and thrived thanks in large part to a forward-looking philosophy handed down from one generation of Murphy ownership to another.

“I always felt it was, whether or not we used the word, a culture of adaptability,” Murphy said. “We watched in the media monitoring industry a lot of bureaus that were just purely newspaper-oriented go out of business.”

Universal Information Services avoided this fate by keeping an open mind to new ways of doing business to better serve its stellar list of clients and did not discriminate over where the next good idea could come from.

“Even before I was involved (in the company), Dad always had the internal philosophy that if a customer or prospective client asked for something we didn’t provide, was it something we could start doing and make it profitable?” Murphy said. “He had a tendency to say yes and then build what was needed.

For me, seeing the opportunity to do something bigger outweighed any emotion or sentimentality,
- TODD MURPHY

“He always liked to share a quote by Winston Churchill, ‘If you don’t take change by the hand, it will take you by the throat.’ We figured out how to take change by the hand before it grabbed us by the throat.”

Taking over ownership in 2016, the younger Murphy proved an apt pupil to his father’s way of doing business to the benefit of the company, especially when it came to seizing upon opportunities.

“In some cases, we would acquire (clipping bureaus) to take over their region or their clients,” he said. “We did the same thing with broadcast monitors if they had come to the end of the run or hadn’t been able to adapt but still had a client base.

“Also, part of remaining adaptable was to hire people who were adaptable. As the industry changed, the skills of our team had to change. The people who were with us for over 30 years were the most adaptable people in the company.”

With everything Universal Information Services accomplished under Murphy’s leadership, it likely surprised a lot of people to read of the company being acquired by Australian media monitoring firm Truescope in 2023. Murphy said he initially reached out to the firm seeking to share technology when, once again, a good opportunity presented itself.

“They had tried to enter the U.S. about a year and a half earlier, starting from client zero, and it didn’t work, they didn’t get any traction,” Murphy said. “When I reached out about their technology and seeing if we could do something together, (Truescope co-founder and CEO John Croll) said, ‘Your timing’s actually pretty good because I’m looking to change how we’re entering the U.S.’

“I believe he felt with this acquisition he would immediately be in the U.S. market in a stronger way than doing it from scratch.”

Murphy said despite his ample pride in what was built at USI, and the long history of family ownership, he didn’t let emotion affect him when the right moment came along.

“For me, seeing the opportunity to do something bigger outweighed any emotion or sentimentality,” he said. “I was taking my whole team with me, and that’s the only part that I would ever be emotional about, the quality of my team and their professionalism.

“So, when I was contemplating the opportunity with Truescope, the opportunity for me and my team to do something on a bigger scale with greater technology was exciting. There wasn’t any sadness about letting the old company die so the new one could grow.”

FABULOUS FACTS

ONE WORD THAT BEST DESCRIBES ME: IMAGINATIVE

ADVICE I WOULD GIVE TO MY 15-YEAR-OLD SELF: LEARN HOW TO LISTEN WELL, THEN PUT YOURSELF IN MANY DIFFERENT CONVERSATIONS. WHAT YOU HEAR WILL INFLUENCE WHAT YOU DO.

ONE HIDDEN TALENT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT ME: I PLAY THE GUITAR, FENDER AND RICKENBACKER.

WORDS I LIVE BY: IMAGINE-BUILD-MOVE FORWARD

SOMEONE FROM HISTORY — LIVING OR DEAD — I’D LIKE TO HAVE DRINKS WITH: NAPOLEON BONAPARTE; I HAVE MANY QUESTIONS FOR HIM.

GADGET OR PIECE OF TECH I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: MY TURNTABLE FOR MY VINYL RECORD COLLECTION.

Once the deal was finalized, Murphy served for a period as president of Truescope North America and then stepped into the wholly alien role of doing nothing for a spell. Inactivity was never a long-term proposition, however, as evidenced by his work as president of the global media monitoring trade association FIBEP, where he created a new initiative to develop a global framework for fair, reasonable and sustainable content licensing.

He’s also involved in a number of industry and nonprofit boards, including serving the Omaha Press Club, chair of the Epilepsy Foundation of Nebraska, and as past president of the Rotary Club of Omaha.

Now, with a little time off under his belt, he’s weighing where his next chapter will be written.

“I’m starting to war room where I’m got a checklist of about seven ideas,” he said with a chuckle. “I might take my culture-building and team skills and just take it to a different industry entirely. News, as you know, is stressful, and it’s really stressful right now. At the same time, it gets in your blood, so as much as I dream about leaving the industry completely, we’ll see what happens.”

The Fed Holds Rates Steady, but for How Long?

HFS has long said that the market doesn’t need the Fed to cut interest rates in order for this bull market to march higher. Furthermore, we’ve pointed out that the Fed’s actions have a high influence on short-term rates but that its impact decreases as loan terms lengthen. Just because it reduces the Federal Funds Rate by 0.5% doesn’t mean that all interest rates will fall. In fact, it can have the opposite effect. As we wrote last September in an article titled, “Long-term Bonds Look Expensive,” we pointed out that after the Fed begins a new rate-cutting cycle, average yields on the 10-year U.S. Treasury rise 0.59% a year later. While we’re not quite at a year removed from the Fed’s first rate cut this cycle, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield has risen about 63 basis points, which is right in line with the average move during the last six cycles.

While the Fed and its monetary policy are important, we believe it just doesn’t carry the same weight in the market that it has over the past 15 years. The era of Quantitative Easing is over, and bond markets are getting back to being driven by good ol’ supply and demand.

Fed will resume its rate cutting cycle shortly after.

While HFS doesn’t think that the market needs the Fed to cut rates, we think it could help. The reason that the Fed kept rates the same during last week’s committee meeting is the looming impact from tariffs. Academics have long thought that tariffs are inflationary and likely contributed to the Great Depression so economists and the Fed have been waiting for the impact to show up. Many felt that the April report for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) wouldn’t show much, but that it would begin in May. However, the May report was below expectations, coming in near a four-year low at 2.4%. Now many economists are expecting tariff inflation to begin showing in the upcoming summer reports. If it doesn’t in a meaningful way, we would expect that the

While Fed actions are important, they’re just not nearly as significant as they once were. Moreover, a lower Fed rate doesn’t guarantee that rates on mortgages and car loans will become lower. One or two Fed cuts can be meaningful for real estate and banks but is unlikely to matter much for the primary driver of today’s stock market: the digital economy.

KENE OKIGBO

Bio:

Landscape architect

Kene Okigbo is a partner at RDG Planning & Design with award-winning work credits spanning the company’s college and university, health care, parks and open space, sports and urban design markets. In addition to his design practice, Okigbo is deeply engaged in community and professional organizations.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

The built environment is the physical manifestation of our values — it’s how we extrapolate the values of past civilizations. There’s an awesome responsibility connected to that. The work we do impacts life expectancy. It impacts emotional well-being. It impacts the rates of recovery during/after crisis and illness. All these effects of urban design and landscape architecture are the “unseen seen,” and they can be hard to pin down, but when design is done well, it doesn’t just look good, it quite literally does good.

What led you to your professional field?

I found landscape architecture by accident. I originally thought philosophy or computer engineering might be my pursuit, but I fell in love with the community engagement and public impact aspects of designing the built environment. High school student council exposed me to my first set of architectural plans, and my parents exposed me to diverse environments like powwows in North Dakota and informal settlements in West and East Africa. Without either experience, I may never have chosen a field that balances the intersection of culture and infrastructure.

What are the fundamental elements of good design?

Borrowing from Hippocrates, “First, do no harm.” Does your impact improve the human experience? Does your impact improve natural systems? Then ask, is there authenticity to the story being told through the design?

Thinking through the lens of the communities impacted by our work usually leads us to solutions that aim to heal. When we do this well, we amplify the stories of local legends. We invest in creating relationships with stakeholders and project advocates who can speak to past successes and failure. After paying attention to what is important to a populous, we use our experience to design a solution that meets those community’s specific needs, utilizing materials that are high quality,

regardless of what zip code or neighborhood the project falls within.

What is something a mentor told you that has been essential to your career?

Two things:

My coworker, Ryan Peterson, really promotes an entrepreneurial mindset — one that values initiative over constantly asking for permission. I used to pause progress too often to seek approval that, in hindsight, wasn’t really necessary. Once I shifted away from that, I realized people tend to appreciate thoughtful, well-intentioned action, even if you didn’t get formal permission first.

A lesson I’ve synthesized over many mentors and many

I see wise people silo their lives so that they can effectively balance their work and non-work partitions. I didn’t take that advice. Some of my closest friends are also in the industry. I go on vacations with my coworkers and spend evenings and weekends with them. I’m not saying we’re a “work family,” but I do love them. 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document to the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address

Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error

All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The
