TOP THINGS TO KNOW

Paid sick leave limitations approved

State lawmakers passed a measure May 28 intended to clarify provisions of a ballot initiative passed by Nebraska voters that guarantees paid sick leave. According to information gleaned from update.legislature.ne.gov, the initiative from last November provided eligible Nebraska employees the right to earn and use paid sick leave for family health needs based on the size of their employer — up to 40 hours annually for employers with fewer than 20 employees and 56 hours for businesses with more than 20 employees.

The new law, sponsored by Lincoln Sen. Beau Ballard, exempts individual owner-operators, independent contractors and individuals who work fewer than 80 hours annually from the provisions of the initiative. Employees who are eligible for paid sick leave under the act will begin to accrue leave after 80 hours of consecutive employment.

The measure also clarifies that employers are not required to pay employees for unused paid sick time when they leave their place of employment. Employees who are rehired within 12 months will have their unused sick time reinstated.

The bill also includes provisions of LB698, sponsored by Sidney Sen. Paul Strommen. Those provisions exempt several groups from the new statute, including temporary and seasonal agricultural employees, workers under age 16 and businesses with 10 or fewer employees. The measure takes effect Oct. 1, 2025.

Medicaid to face changes under new bill

Lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives are looking to advance a budget reconciliation bill that would cut about $715 billion from the nation’s Medicaid program over 10 years. Congress is poised to make those cuts in part by enacting federal work requirements which proponents say are aimed at able-bodied adults without dependents.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates at least 13.7 million people would become uninsured if the current legislation is approved, including at least 7.7 million people impacted by the changes to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. Data analysis shows that poor middle-aged and older women would be among the most widely impacted.

The bill does not extend enhanced premium tax credits for ACA coverage that are set to expire at the end of the year, also potentially raising the cost of insurance for millions of people.

Hideaway Lounge under new ownership

The Hideaway Lounge, 3030 S. 203rd St., is under new ownership. The two-year-old watering hole will hold a grand reopening tonight, Friday, June 6, starting at 6 p.m. Eric Peel, who owns PSG Properties, and Alyssa Boyd recently purchased the business from Brian Shoup. The bar’s name will remain the same. This establishment, which serves high-end cocktails, originally opened in February 2023.

Pilot program works with small businesses and local farmers

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced May 29 that 33 schools or school districts have received grants via the Choose Iowa Food Purchasing Program for schools. The one-year pilot program connects Iowa schools with Choose Iowa members to encourage school food service programs to purchase and serve more ingredients and products sourced from local farmers and small businesses.

The pilot program was authorized during the 2024 legislative session and is an initiative of Choose Iowa, the state’s branding and marketing program that identifies and promotes Iowa-grown, -made and -raised food, beverages and ag products.

Mobile Golf Simulator now open in Omaha metro

Midwest Mobile Golf has opened for business, serving the Omaha metro area. Founded by Garrett Hamilton and Chase VanWinkle, the Gretna-based company provides a golf simulator on a custom-built truck trailer. Guests can play simulated famous courses such as Pebble Beach, and the experience even includes a “clubhouse,” where guests and those who don’t golf can relax, eat a snack and watch their friends play. The mobile golf experience touts itself as perfect for corporate gatherings.

Nebraska Soybean Board engages fire departments on soy-based firefighting foam

The Nebraska Soybean Board participated in the Nebraska State Fire School expo in Grand Island earlier this month, collaborating with Cross Plains Solutions to inform fire departments about SoyFoam TF 1122, a soy-based firefighting foam. NSB distributed 15 sample pails each to fire departments statewide and plans to provide additional samples to more departments later this year.

SoyFoam TF 1122 is designed to suppress fires effectively while prioritizing firefighter safety. Made from soy meal and flour, byproducts of the soybean crush process, the foam is certified as 84% biobased by the U.S. Department of Agriculture BioPreferred program and is also certified ready biodegradable.

Newspaper allows content used in training AI models

The New York Times announced May 29 that it will license content from across its newsroom to train Amazon AI models. Under the multi-year deal, Amazon’s AI services, such as Alexa, will be able to use Times content, including from NYT Cooking and sports website The Athletic, to produce summaries and short excerpts in real time. The deal expands on a pre-existing agreement that allowed Times copy to be used across Amazon’s offerings.

Southwest Airlines begins charging for bags

Southwest Airlines began charging $35 for one checked bag and $45 for a second bag on flights starting May 29. The airline carrier had long held a policy of offering free luggage, but in March announced the added upcharge as a way of gaining revenue. Members in the top tier of Southwest’s loyalty program will still enjoy two checked bags at no charge.

A CLOSER look

Martie Cordaro

LOUISIANA NATIVE FINDS

COMMUNITY IN

OMAHA

Martie Cordaro wasn’t originally thinking of being in sports management. He went to college with a major in education, thinking he was going to coach baseball. However, in the late 1990s, as a student at Lousiana Tech University, Cordaro was asked by then-baseball coach Randy Davis to work on the business side of baseball. Working as director of promotions and marketing, he was so successful at sales that he changed his major to marketing and has continued his career in baseball from the business side.

He stayed in sales until 2004 when he became general manager of the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays in Battle Creek, Michigan, a Class A affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay franchise. He landed in Omaha as president of the then-Omaha Royals and has made the Big O his hometown since that time.

Midlands Business Journal sat down with Cordaro one gray afternoon as the shifting crowds sitting in the stadium outside his office window cheered on their favorite teams in the 2025 Nebraska high school state baseball championships. This community-type event is the heart of the game for Cordaro, who has been with Omaha’s minor league baseball team through changes in name and venue and two different owners. Most importantly, Cordaro saw this team through last year’s championship season, when the Omaha Storm Chasers won the International League championship.

AT A GLANCE

MUSICIAN: CORDARO IS THE DRUMMER FOR THE BAND STRANGE PLEASURES

FAMILY MAN: CORDARO IS MARRIED TO WIFE, SARA, AND HAS THREE SONS — GAVIN, COLLIN AND CASS

FACE: CORDARO WAS HONORED AS THE 179TH FACE ON THE BARROOM FLOOR AT THE OMAHA PRESS CLUB

SOUTHERNER: CORDARO’S HOMETOWN IS RUSTON, LOUISIANA

I think the spirit of a group of people, when focused on the right things, when working together towards the right things, that no matter how small or large a group may be, you’re just organically going to have an opportunity to have more success.

What initially drew you to a career in sports management?

I really kind of fell in love with what minor league baseball offered, meaning the community and the promotions side, not necessarily the baseball side, because in affiliated baseball, we don’t make baseball decisions. The Kansas City Royals do, in our case, because they are our major league affiliate. But after … 18 to 24 months being in minor league baseball, I realized that that I had a future in the game.

What is the business of minor league baseball, as opposed to Major League Baseball?

Business of minor league baseball really comes down to people, community, and it comes down to the 60-plus percent of the community that comes out for something other than baseball. The exact people we want may not be sports or baseball fans but should come out to laugh at the between-inning promotions. You should come out for food offerings. You should come out for Harry Potter Night, or Star Wars Night, or whatever may be going on.

Knowing that about 30% of your people are coming out just to see the baseball game, what do you consider a successful night?

Not every great promotion is great from Day One, and as an operator it’s important to allow our promotions and our marketing and our creative staff the leeway to start something and to be able to have a vision — whether it’s a seasonlong promotion, meaning there’s multiple games within this series, or it’s a once a year, something we’re going to do again annually.

From an operator’s seat, it’s knowing when to push and pull, knowing when to support and when to not do something again.

Tell me about a time you thought or said, “I’m not sure about this one,” but you allowed your staff to just take it and run with it.

The first time we did Daddy-Daughter Princess Night. We had princesses here that fans could take photos with, much like when we have Star Wars characters, very similar. It was awesome, the number of young girls that were in gowns that had gloves on, or were in gowns that had cleats on, or were in gowns with a baseball cap on. Just to see the cross between softball, baseball and the pop culture side of things was really awesome.

That directly led to mothers asking when their mom-son’s night was at the ballpark. That was at a time when minions were popular, from the movie “Despicable Me.” Minions can be males or females but we primarily focused on mothers having the opportunity to come out with their sons.

What creative fan engagement initiatives are you most proud of implementing?

Our fans like the access to players, We created an area because of where our clubhouses (locker rooms) sit. Our clubhouses are in the outfield, on top of the ground, and there’s a ramp in which the players access the field. When we realized that that was a real asset, we created the autograph bridge. Now, because Major League Baseball mandated we have netting from foul pole to foul pole, it’s even more difficult for fans to get players’ attention during a game. I’m glad we have the autograph bridge, because that’s something that’s been fan friendly.

- MARTIE CORDARO, PRESIDENT, OMAHA STORM CHASERS

Being a Star Wars enthusiast, are there any leadership principles from the franchise that you found particularly applicable when you’re running professional sports organizations?

I think the spirit of a group of people, when focused on the right things, when working together towards the right things, that no matter how small or large a group may be, you’re just organically going to have an opportunity to have more success. Look at the Ewoks specifically in the Battle of Endor, or look at the rebels in the original film, “A New Hope”.

Not that people who work in a minor league baseball office are rebels, but we have day jobs and night jobs. Today, as club president, I had to go on the field, and I had to make sure that our grounds crew was ready for game three of today’s state high school baseball. That’s not something that most GMs or athletic directors or presidents in other sports would have to do.

How has your experience as a drummer influenced your approach to leadership and community engagement in the sports world?

I have looked at drumming as something I love to do. It’s a creative outlet. Now it’s a stress reliever, but it also has opened up our world at Werner Park to more creatives in the metro, a number of music people. I’ll say that the (musical) training that I got at (age) 18 through 22 has been beneficial — playing music professionally and handling the finances and dealing with bar owners at 2 a.m. trying to get paid $50 just so we could get to the next city.

What professional achievement has meant the most to you, personally?

(The George Brett Commitment to ALS award in early March 2020) You know, ALS is known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. So it’s always kind of been known as the baseball disease, and that’s how I was introduced to it. Getting to know so many along the way, so many people along the way that have battled ALS or have helped their loved ones battle ALS, and having gone to (Washington) D.C. in 2014 to lobby on behalf of those in our state, and then all the walks we had here, and all the fundraising, from a community service perspective, for me, was very meaningful. That award was such a confluence of so many professional and personal and different roads that all led into one spot.

Werner Park has evolved as a venue for both baseball and soccer. What have been the biggest challenges in adapting a baseball-specific facility for soccer matches?

When we set out on the soccer path on May 1 of 2019, we didn’t know what was going to happen in 2020 with COVID. Number two, we didn’t really know what crossover there was or wasn’t and third, we didn’t realize how difficult operationally things were going to be for having those two sports in the same building. We quickly realized that for soccer to really grow and mature as a business, that we would need to have a soccer-specific venue.

What does the average person not know about your business?

People don’t know how hard the staff works. People don’t know that we all live here yearround. The season is more operational … but in the off-season, we’re executing what we either accomplished or didn’t accomplish during the planning and the sales portion of it.

The Business of

ATHLETIC LEAGUES STILL GROWING THEIR APPEAL IN

It’s a different time now. People expect to be entertained.

In the two years of the Omaha Supernovas’ existence, the team has set the bar for a professional sport that stands on its own in Omaha.

The Supernovas won the first-ever Pro Volleyball Federation championship a year ago, and while their second season came to a disappointing finish last month, losing to the upstart Indy Ignite, big things still await on the franchise’s horizon.

The Supernovas announced in January they would no longer be affiliated with the PVF after this season and are expected to be a founding partner of a new indoor league, projected to start in January of 2026.

Supernovas President Diane Mendenhall witnessed firsthand the steady growth of volleyball going all the way back to her Ogallala upbringing in farwestern Nebraska.

“It’s interesting because people constantly ask you that question, ‘Did you ever dream that it would be this big?’”she said. “You want to say, ‘Yes, of course, I did.’

- DIANE MENDENHALL, TEAM PRESIDENT, OMAHA SUPERNOVAS

“With that said, I reflect back on this year and I look at the people …all the way down (the organization). Our front office staff has just been amazing in creating this structure.”

Pro volleyball leagues are burgeoning in the U.S. in a push to keep the best American players at home instead of playing abroad. With the foundation and successful tradition established by the University of Nebraska women’s volleyball program, fans climbed aboard and welcomed the professional game in Omaha. As a result, the Supernovas have drawn the top 15 biggest crowds in U.S. pro volleyball history.

Moving to the new league, Mendenhall doesn’t expect the Supernovas’ formula to change in the future. She said maintaining the visibility and connection to the community the team and staff have achieved thus far is key to keeping the momentum moving. Mendenhall counts 137 events the Supernovas participated in

during the last year, 97 prior to the start of the 2025 season.

“We made sure that Omaha, the surrounding region, the area, the entire states of Nebraska and Iowa, knew that this was their team,” she said.

Examining data traced to the first serve in 2025 last January, Mendenhall said the Supernovas sold single-game tickets to patrons in 188 different cities, towns and villages in Nebraska. East of the Missouri River, the Supernovas also sold tickets to residents of 53 different Iowa counties.

In all, Supernovas season-ticket holders represented 16 different states. Single-game tickets were purchased by consumers in 40 states, including Hawaii and Alaska.

“It shows you the lens of the country that is on Omaha and on pro volleyball here,” said Mendenhall.

ATHLETIC LEAGUES STILL GROWING THEIR APPEAL IN OMAHA

We know our niche. We know our market. This is a very ripe sports state.

Adapting to change

Omaha Storm Chasers President Martie Cordaro is working under his third ownership group since joining the baseball team in 2007, when they were still the Omaha Royals and playing home games at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Cordaro has also taken on an additional role, as president of the Union Omaha Soccer Club in USL League One. The team is sharing facilities at Werner Park,

- MARTIE CORDARO, PRESIDENT, OMAHA STORM CHASERS AND UNION OMAHA

the Storm Chasers’ home, until a soccer-specific stadium is built at a yet-to-be announced location.

“We run the soccer club similarly. I wouldn’t say the same,” said Cordaro. “Soccer and baseball fans are from different backgrounds, different demographics.”

Cordaro recognizes that there’s more competition than ever in Omaha for spectators’ sports dollar.

“We know our niche. We know our market,” said Cordaro. “This is a very ripe sports state.”

From a feeder standpoint, minor league baseball strives to eventually send players to the big leagues. Cordaro said 75 percent of the Storm Chaser players have MLB experience, better than the AAA average of better than 71 percent.

“The players you’re seeing here are future major league sports players, AllStars, even some which may be Hall of Famers,” said Cordaro. “You can’t say that

NOAH CAMERON (COURTESY OF OMAHA STORM CHASERS)
BRADY ARNESON (COURTESY OF OMAHA LANCERS)

for any other sport, amateur or professional, in the entire state.”

Cordaro added that minor league baseball goes beyond players when fueling the big leagues.

“Major League Baseball has been taking a page out of our promotional tool kit going back about a decade or so,” he said. “You can look at Star Wars Night, Bark in the Park and some of those things for evidence of that.”

Following a pioneer

Newly named Omaha Lancers Team President Mike West’s blueprint for this, his first season in the United States Hockey League actually borrows from professional volleyball and baseball in Omaha.

Though West preceded Cordaro in the Omaha sports management field, he took notes on the Storm Chasers’ transition, from changing the team name and its marketing to making the move to Sarpy County.

West greatly admired Cordaro’s work and calls Cordaro an Omaha pioneer for steering the Storm Chasers toward their current era of success.

“Martie changed everything,” said West. “Martie Cordaro is the one that really understood, No. 1, the entertainment part of it. But they also elevated how you do group sales; they did group sales in a different way and they did great theme nights.”

West applied his own philosophies to Creighton athletics in 2002 when the Bluejays were on the verge of making the transition from downtown’s Civic Auditorium to what was then known as the Qwest Center, now CHI Health Center. He often compared Bluejay sporting events to a Broadway show.

“We have to entertain people from the moment they get in to the moment they leave,” he said.

After founding MTT management, a consulting firm, in 2013, West worked with the Supernovas before accepting the Lancers’ front-office opportunity. The move closed the circle on his experiences with hockey, from beer rep to working with the Lancers, while in his 20s. Later, after his consulting company was up and running, he worked with the Lancers in 2014.

While the personnel side of the front office assembles the team for next season, West looks at the Lancers’ venue, the Liberty First Credit Union Arena, formerly Ralston Arena, as a place for event space in conjunction with hockey.

“The Liberty First Arena has so many spaces to do pregame parties, holiday parties and birthday parties that the other arenas don’t have,” he said. “I can take a page out of Martie’s book and apply that to the Omaha Lancers. I think it can be very effective.”

He also recognizes that hockey fans represent a different demographic.

“Hockey fans in this town are great,” said West, who also worked as a consultant with the University of Nebraska Omaha athletic department. “Hockey fans are so loyal; they will support both (college hockey and the Lancers). They’re crazy and passionate about the sport.”

For all Omaha sports, Mendenhall said the expectations are the same.

“It’s a different time now,” she said. “People expect to be entertained.”

Creative Hair Design Salon and Spa

A Cut Above

JOHN MANGIAMELI FINDS HIS OWN STYLE WITH CREATIVE HAIR DESIGN SALON AND SPA

John Mangiameli had been around the salon industry his whole life, so after he earned his cosmetology license, he expected to carry the family business forward indefinitely at his father’s established salon at 51st and Military. He was surprised when his father rather quickly urged him to move on.

“He said, ‘Well, I don’t want you working here. I want you to go out west,’” Mangiameli recalled. “At that time, it kind of hurt my feelings but he was thinking of the future, absolutely.”

Moving west turned out to be a good strategy. For the next few years, Mangiameli sharpened his skills at other salons, starting with Claude Smith’s (whose family still runs a salon after Smith’s 2020 retirement). In 1982, he launched his own venture, Creative Hair Design, at 120th and Pacific streets. Coming up with the name was the easiest part.

“Talking to some guys that were in business, they said you want to name it something that people are going to find easy to remember,” Mangiameli said. “They said, ‘You’re a creative person and that’s what you do, you create.’ So, that’s how we came up with Creative Hair Design.”

From the roots

The salon began operations in a 1,200-square-foot space. It grew through careful expansion over four decades, becoming Creative Hair Design Salon and Spa and ultimately occupying 17,000 square feet and the entire building with a full array of hair and nail salon services on the first floor and spa services on the second floor.

“I looked at having controlled debt, so we always knew that if we went into debt, we were able to handle it if something went terribly wrong. I think

JOHN MANGIAMELI, OWNER, CREATIVE HAIR DESIGN SALON AND SPA
STYLIST STACY CASSON

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL

It’s part of my mission to give my time and advice to younger people starting in the business.

that was the biggest thing that I’ve learned that kept me out of trouble,” Mangiameli said. “Over the years, we’ve put millions into building and rebuilding and remodeling and adding on and building this... we were always able to control it, and if something ever happened, we were going to be perfectly fine.”

When Mangiameli talks about passing along his earned wisdom to his staff, he means not only artistic flair and technical skills but also some personal finance fundamentals — unusual for employers in his industry.

“I’ve been able to take (employees) out of beauty school and help them develop their skills and help them make a great living, be self-sufficient,” he said. “I helped them learn about investments and that it’s important to save and put money away… I was a big saver, anyway, when I was younger, and I’ve always invested and saved money.

“I thought, ‘I’m going to teach this generation — still teaching generations, even now — that this is what’s important, you’re able to build wealth over time’... Now, the senior staff are telling the younger staff, ‘Just do what he says.’ They will be very well taken care of because they started investing early, and we teach them how to make money while they sleep.”

Many layers

Creative Hair Design Salon and Spa became very well-established in west Omaha, but clients come from

all over the metro area. The salon also supports multiple community initiatives, nonprofit organizations, and local events from Locks of Love to the Aksarben Ball.

Mangiameli said he still personally attends to clients who have entrusted him with their styling needs for decades but hasn’t directly taken on new clients for 20 years. His hands are full enough without a pair of shears in them — as the business grew, Mangiameli transitioned to managing things behind the scenes and focusing on leading and developing his team.

“It’s more important for me to work with the younger staff and help them build their clientele,” he said, adding with a chuckle that he’s utilizing his “MBWA” degree. “It’s Managing By Wandering Around.”

On a more serious note, he said, “Everything that can happen in business, I’ve been through. I look at it and say, ‘It’s part of my mission to give my time and advice to younger people starting in the business.’”

Mangiameli started the salon with a only a few stylists. One, Judy Cunningham, has been on board since Day One, and many of the approximately 50 current team members have been with Creative for years.

The company’s mission statement — “If we treat the employees with honesty, dignity, and loyalty, in return they will treat our guests with honesty, dignity, and loyalty” — reflects Mangiameli’s leadership philosophy.

“You gotta work harder than everybody else,” he said.

“Our mission statement is, ‘We’re here to serve with love, nourish with plants and heal with deep, rooted connection,’” said Cindy Guenzel, who founded and owns the business with husband C.J. “Our taglines are ‘Plants. Nourish. People.’ And ‘People. Thrive. Together.’”

The broad menu is plant-based with an emphasis on whole foods and superfoods, she added.

“We serve breakfast and lunch, coffee and tea as well as organic cold-pressed juice. We do many different things, but we’re really here to be that neighborhood healthy, clean, nourishing restaurant,” she said. “Whether it’s a sweet treat, whether it’s a coffee, whether it’s a smoothie or a juice or a full meal, we have all of those things.”

Organic growth

The restaurant has already received recognition in the Omaha Vegan Chef Challenge, despite having only been open since September 2023. The business plan, however, originated 20 years ago when Cindy was still in music education and C.J. had a career in the financial services industry and was doing trust and estate work.

“We actually built the business plan in 2005, a coldpressed juicery/smoothie shop, and we spent time researching on how to bring the business to life,” Cindy said, adding that it “never felt like” the right time to launch.

“A few years ago, it really felt like the world had changed. People were more open to plant-based living and eating more plants, and really learning how to love eating our food again and really enjoying all of the beautiful colors and the nutrients,” she said. “A few years ago, we were both in transition and decided,

‘Well, it’s now or never. Let’s do it.’

“Along the way, it went from just a smoothie and organic cold-pressed juicery to a full kitchen, because we felt like really being able to meet people where they are and offer a full meal when they’re looking for something that is clean and nourishing.”

Their respective professional backgrounds provided the couple with useful skills for entrepreneurship, Cindy said. Lifestyle commitments to veganism and organic foods had an even stronger influence.

“The inspiration was our own life experience. We were both on health journeys and realized that we were looking toward what we eat as a way to take care of ourselves and to heal ourselves,” she said. “We landed on whole foods, organic, plant-based foods… It’s nutrient-dense to support the body and your lifestyle.”

The couple are decades in and now raising their children within the same healthy parameters.

“We’d been living this way for 20-plus years and so felt like we were just authentically replicating the way that we live into a business to serve others well,” C.J. said.

From the ground up

The couple has transferred their care for the community and the planet into thoughtful choices for Rooted Table such as recycling and composting. They also hope to catalyze improved eating and health practices in common places from schools to hospitals.

“First and foremost, why we exist is for our mission.

It’s not a chain (or) everybody else’s business,” C.J. said. “It’s not about money for us. It’s focused on impact and serving the community. That’s a big piece that impacts how we define and what we choose for ingredients, and the quality of ingredients that we’re putting into things.”

Sourcing those ingredients can be a challenge, he added.

“This area of the country has very limited organic options, and getting those on a consistent basis for a long time — which, maybe, it’s getting a little better — we were probably getting 50% delivery on our orders through many of the well-known national food purveyors that are providing most restaurants in our community,” C.J. said.

“The more restaurants that do step up (to provide vegan options), it’ll help alleviate some of those difficulties. I think the main thing is they just need a greater economy of scale to produce it on.”

The rewards have been worth any challenges, he emphasized.

“(It’s) constant self-discovery to create the strength and persistent energy and effort to be able to keep building and creating despite all of the challenges that come up,” C.J. said. “We have people come in who are totally touched and transformed… Every day is a new day, and we just try and do our best to serve people in the most sincere, intelligent way, and serve the highest quality food to nourish our community.”

DEAN HOLLIS

OCCUPATION: FOUNDER, DIVENTURES

EDUCATION: BACHELOR OF ARTS IN PSYCHOLOGY

Water is Life DEAN HOLLIS’ COMPANY CONTINUES TO REVOLUTIONIZE INDUSTRY

Dean Hollis can point to two major influences that would one day contribute to his launching and growing Diventures, a 16-year-old aquatics company dealing in swim gear, swimming and scuba lessons, and travel services.

“Two things are in my DNA, the first being water,” he said. “I grew up in central Florida, so obviously, we were surrounded by water. I think I was one of those kids who could swim before I could walk and I was always in, on, under and around the water.

“The second thing is retailing; my great-great-grandfather was a retail pioneer in the state of Florida, opening up one of the first general stores in the state and passed it on down through generations in my family. So, yeah, my DNA is water and customer service, retail, people taking care of people.”

Florida to Omaha

Following college, Hollis came to work for Conagra Brands, a career that began in the late 1980s and would involve multiple transfers until “they brought a water boy to a

point (Omaha) about as far away from the water as you can get,” he said with a laugh. By then, the idea of entrepreneurship had already been bubbling for some time.

“It had been in the back of my brain but I hadn’t thought about it seriously until I moved to Omaha and was diving with some friends,” he said. “At one point, there were five dive shops in Omaha and then three of them closed down. My friends were all lamenting about, let’s just say, the poor customer service they got at both of those dive shops, neither of which are around today.

“They said, ‘Hey when you retire, you’ve got to open up a dive shop.’ So, one thing led to another, and I was fortunate and blessed to retire from Conagra early. I’d had this crazy idea to open up a little dive shop and that’s what I did.”

The original concept, catering to hardcore and aspiring scuba divers, held little physical resemblance to the Diventures of today. As Hollis started going past mere sketches into the meat of what the company would be, however, he saw a bigger opportunity to operate in a completely different way.

Our mission is to use our passion and the power of water to impact lives, change the world and have fun doing it.

“I was just going open up a little dive shop and I decided I’d call some people I knew in the dive industry and start asking questions,” he said. “I ended up talking to hundreds of people about dive shops, what they liked, what they didn’t like, what would they do differently. That led me to several things. One, it led me to the fact that this industry could really benefit from a fanatical focus on the customer, that this is an industry that’s relationship-driven, which really resonated with me.

“It also led me to realize the reason dive shops fail is that running a business got in the way of somebody’s passion. So, if I could centralize the work most entrepreneurs don’t want to do, like paying bills, negotiating with vendors, all that, and let employees just do what they love to do, taking care of the customer, that could be a pretty interesting model. That gave us scale and gave us speed while still really focusing on customers.”

Rapid growth

The strategy worked better than Hollis ever could have imagined. Diventures, which opened in 2009, was an immediate hit and in short order grew and expanded quickly. Leveraging his Conagra experiences in mergers and acquisitions, Hollis steadily added locations to the point where today, the company operates 18 centers in 12 states and employs 500.

“We grew through acquisition. We looked for good dive shops that had good customer relationships. Many of the owners we dealt with we provided a great exit strategy,” he said. “Most of our acquisitions have been with people I’ve known for 10 years and some I had been talking to for 10 years, until they realized that this is the best move for their business.

“The second thing about our growth is, it still comes down to people. Even though we lead hard with mission, vision, values and investing back in the business, finding great people who believe in what we’re doing and want to be a part of it is very important. It’s a big challenge to do that but something we’ve had great success with.”

Many companies talk about their mission statement, but few have the kind of lifeand-death purpose of Diventures in teaching people of all ages how to swim.

“I didn’t even plan on having learning to swim as a business component, originally,” he said. “At the time, however, there weren’t many good swim schools in Omaha and the facts are 24 people drown every single day in the United States, and half of those are kids. As somebody who loves water, I saw an emotional obligation to do something about that.”

Local effort, global impact

As much as any other aspect of the company’s success, it is the life-saving and lifeaffirming elements that bring Hollis the most joy.

“I know we save lives every single day when we teach kids how to swim and be safe around the water and with the work we do with water rescue programs or the American Red Cross,” he said. “We’re also working with adaptive divers who have disabilities, whether it’s mental or physical disabilities, and impacting their lives. Then, with all the travel we do to a lot of third world countries, we’re breaking the cycle of poverty by changing the gross domestic product in those countries because our people are traveling there, having a good time. Plus, we’re having a positive effect on the oceans of our world.

“Our mission is to use our passion and the power of water to impact lives, change the world and have fun doing it. That’s what I’m most proud of — the lives we’re changing both within our team, with the impact we have around the world, and doing it out of Omaha, Nebraska. That’s pretty cool.”

ROB BUFFINGTON, OWNER, GORDIAN STAFFING

Industry : Staffing

Address: 3423 N 190th Plaza, Elkhorn Website: gordianstaffing.com

Why did you start your business? I started Gordian Staffing out of necessity. I was drowning in debt, overwhelmed by the day-to-day chaos of running a small business, and struggling to find reliable help I could afford. I had reached a breaking point—financially, mentally, and emotionally. Hiring full-time local staff wasn’t an option, and outsourcing felt complicated and risky.

That’s when I began experimenting with remote talent, starting with just one assistant overseas. That one hire changed everything. It bought me back time, allowed me to stabilize the business and eventually helped me grow. I realized that what saved me could help other business owners too — especially those stuck in the same grind I was in working 80 hours a week, doing everything themselves, and losing control of their business and life.

So I created Gordian Staffing with a simple mission: help small and mid-sized businesses cut through the knots in their operations by providing highly capable, affordable remote staff. I knew firsthand what it felt like to be overwhelmed with payroll, HR, billing, customer service, and all the tasks that don’t drive revenue but can easily sink a business if ignored. I also knew that good people exist everywhere — you just need the right structure to find them, support them and make them part of a team.

What started as a solution to my personal crisis has become a fast-growing company that now helps hundreds of businesses and employs over 700 people across Mexico and the Philippines. Most of our clients aren’t giant companies, they’re in that pressure point of 10 to 200 employees where things are always in transition. We’ve built a niche serving them well, understanding their pain points, and providing talent that truly fits their needs.

At its core, Gordian Staffing exists because I’ve been in the shoes of our clients. I know what it means to feel

stuck, to need help, and to have no idea where to find it. We’re not just a staffing company — we’re a lifeline for business owners who want to scale without burning out.

What are you most excited about for the future of your business? I’m most excited about the ripple effect we’re creating. The longer we operate, the more success stories we see — clients who finally have time to grow their businesses, and employees who build stable, fulfilling careers. Every year, we watch more people move into leadership roles, buy homes, support families and change their lives. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that what started as a small solution to my own struggle is now making a difference for hundreds of others. That impact keeps growing, and watching it unfold is the most exciting part of what we do.

Where do you get your entrepreneurial drive? I don’t really know — I’ve just always been a hustler. I can’t see a problem without wanting to fix it. Most great business owners I know are wired the same way. It’s less about ambition and more about instinct and wanting to improve things on a daily basis.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Be ready — it’s harder than you think. The wins are great but the stress, pressure and responsibility are real. Make sure you have a strong support network, both personally and professionally. Surround yourself with people who will challenge you, back you up and help you stay grounded. You won’t make it alone.

How have you benefited from being a member of EO? Being a member of EO has been a game-changer. There are so many challenges, decisions and pressures that come with running a business — things that non-business owners just can’t fully understand. EO gives me a space to connect with others who’ve been through the same struggles. It’s made the journey a lot less lonely. Whether it’s sharing wins, navigating tough calls, or just knowing I’m not the only one figuring it out as I go, that support and camaraderie has been invaluable. It’s helped me grow personally and professionally in ways I didn’t expect.

Europe is Falling Further Behind

One of the primary reasons why we continue to favor U.S. stocks over European long term is how far ahead we are in the digital economy. Europe used to have an early foothold in the technology race with Nokia and Ericsson in the 1990s but those firms were eventually marginalized by both U.S. and Chinese companies. While there are still some notable players in that region (ASML, SAP, Spotify, etc.), most would agree that Europe has fallen behind. To put this into perspective, the largest European cloud provider, OVHcloud, generated just over $1.1 billion in sales in 2024. This is just 1% of the revenue of Amazon’s Web Services (AWS), which totaled nearly $110 billion last year. To add insult to injury, AWS’ growth rate was nearly twice that of OVHcloud, despite being roughly 100x larger.

March 2024.

Europe has fallen even further behind in AI, which we believe will make it even more dependent upon U.S. technology.

The numbers are staggering. According to Epoch AI, the U.S. has roughly 70% of global frontier AI training compute. The EU has less than 5%. The 2024 AI Index from Stanford showed that the U.S. hosts nine of the 10 largest AI supercomputing clusters in the world. Almost all the leading-edge AI models are trained in the U.S. Even the European Commission reported that the EU’s AI investment is only 4% of what the U.S. spends. Where the EU is winning is in regulation, which probably explains much of the above. It was the first to launch comprehensive AI regulation with the passing of the EU AI Act in

HFS believes that AI will become a competitive necessity for all global businesses and drive technology spend even higher. Unless Europe can suddenly become self-sufficient in AI, it will likely have to choose between the U.S. or China. Despite our differences and frayed relationship over trade, we believe Europe will have little choice than to become an even larger customer of U.S. technology.

Midlands Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in the community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. To nominate someone for this section, email news@mbj.com with the individual’s name, position, company and email.

Bio:

Tony DeSantis, data analytics shareholder, began his career in 1999. He specializes in data management and the application of artificial intelligence to simplify business processes and create solutions that directly impact the bottom line. As a mentor, DeSantis is passionate about developing emerging talent within the firm. He has also been actively involved in various policy committees, contributing his expertise to shaping the firm’s strategic direction. A family man, DeSantis and his wife stay busy with their four children, including attending and coaching their kids’ sporting events and other activities.

As a husband and father, what steps do you take to keep your life in balance?

As a husband and father with very active children, I work to prioritize their activities as best I can. I’ve learned in many cases that with some creativity and flexibility, I can be at most of the family activities and still get done what I need to do at work. The key for me, though, is not just showing up but being present. I try to stay off e-mail or even taking calls if it can be avoided. I’m not saying it’s always perfect, but I don’t want to look back and regret missing something because I thought work couldn’t wait.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the constant challenge and opportunity to solve complex problems. Every day is different, and I get to work with a talented team to uncover insights that can significantly impact our clients’ business. Additionally, I appreciate the opportunity to mentor and develop the amazing Data Analytics team at Lutz.

Why is mentoring newer/younger employees important to you?

I’ve always enjoyed the teaching aspect of my career. Some of my best memories throughout my career have been seeing employees achieve their career milestones. I enjoy the new energy, fresh perspectives and eagerness that younger employees bring to the team. For the mentees, it provides not only support but also helps give them confidence and guidance in shaping their careers. It’s important to develop the next group of leaders that can continue to build and shape our service offerings and the firm, but it also fosters a culture of continuous learning and growth, ensuring that we remain innovative and competitive.

What is something a mentor told you that has been essential to your career and why?

One piece of advice that has stuck with me is to always be curious and find the learning opportunity. Early on in your career, you may do work that seems simple or isn’t high value, or maybe it is just getting a list of things to do and knocking them off your to-do list. But what can you take from those experiences? I started asking “why,” trying to understand the reason for the request or assignment. In some cases, I learned more about an industry even though I wasn’t growing my technical skill set. In other cases, I started to hear what the client was asking for and was able to reframe the request to something that better met the client’s needs.

Now, as I lead a group that delivers reporting and analytics for clients … I often tell the team that the work becomes more interesting when we think about the why,

I figured out in college I had an interest in technology but also business. I majored in finance and operations and minored in management information systems. When interviewing for jobs, it seemed like I would have to choose business or technology, however, I found an opportunity with a company that allowed me to blend both my business and technology interests.
