In November 2007, Crinda Williams’ life was in a fledgling state.

“A lot of things happened in one year. I got divorced. My youngest of four kids went to kindergarten. My dad came and lived with me, and he died of cancer,” she said. “I had been a stay-at-home mom for 15 years. I knew, being a newly divorced mom of four, that I needed to get a job.”

It was a welcome turn of fortune when Williams’ friend, Patrice Wallace, who owned a store called For The Birds with her husband, Jeff, asked Williams to keep the store running through the holiday season before a planned closure. Wallace had moved out of state and it had become impractical to continue managing the business remotely.

“I didn’t know anything in the world about feeding birds or running a business or having a business,” Williams said. “I was looking for purpose

at that point in my life, at the crossroads … We cleared everything out at 90% off and then I decided to stay.”

Winging it

Williams purchased the business, soon adding Wild to the store’s name in hopes of reducing the number of visitors thinking it was a pet store that sold birds. For The Wild Birds sells food for wild birds, plus backyard feeders, birdhouses, birdbaths and related accessories, garden items and naturethemed gifts.

Property tax growth enables new housing

Omaha plans to add an estimated 1,900 affordable homes to its urban core through a $40 million boost tied to property tax growth. As reported in the Nebraska Examiner Aug. 1, the tax revenue is expected to come from Omaha’s streetcar project.

The dwellings would be a mix of rental, for-sale and rehabbed properties in a 770block area around the streetcar’s initial downtown-midtown route. The city chose Front Porch Investments to distribute millions in the form of grants and low-interest loans. The estimation for completion and running of the initial route is in 2027.

These affordable homes will be targeted to people making under a specific income. Front Porch Investments will be in charge of selecting the builders on this multimillion dollar project.

Berkshire Hathaway operating earnings fall

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway reported Aug. 2 that operating earnings for the second quarter fell 3.79% from the same time last year.

This was the first earnings report announced since Buffett, 94, named Greg Abel, vice chairman of noninsurance operations at Berkshire, as his successor. Buffett plans to retire at the end of this year. Berkshire reported $20.8 billion in operating earnings for the first six months of the year, an 8.8% decrease from the same time last year. Earnings for the second quarter totaled $11.16 billion, a drop from $11.6 billion a year earlier.

Werner Enterprises reports second quarter results

Werner Enterprises, Inc., a premier transportation and logistics provider headquartered in Omaha, has reported results for the second quarter, which ended June 30, 2025.

Highlights, with all metrics compared to second quarter 2024, include:

• Total revenues of $753.1 million, decreased $7.7 million, or 1%

• Operating income of $66.3 million, up 238%; non-GAAP adjusted operating income of $16.6 million down 22%

• Operating margin of 8.8%, increased 620 basis points from 2.6%; non-GAAP adjusted operating margin of 2.2%, decreased 60 basis points from 2.8%

• Diluted EPS of $0.72 up 380%; non-GAAP adjusted diluted EPS of $0.11 down 36%

AMCON Distributing Co. announces dividends

The board of directors of AMCON Distributing Co., an Omaha-based convenience and foodservice distributor, has announced a quarterly cash dividend of $0.18 per common share. AMCON, and its subsidiaries Team Sledd, LLC and Henry’s Foods, Inc., is a leading convenience and foodservice distributor of consumer products, including beverages, candy, tobacco, groceries, foodservice, frozen and refrigerated foods, automotive supplies and health and beauty care products serving 34 states from 14 distribution centers in Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia. Through its Healthy Edge Retail Group, AMCON operates 15 health and natural product retail stores in the Midwest and Florida.

Bellevue University product helps identify workplace opportunities

Bellevue University, one of America’s top online universities, today announced the addition of a new product offering — Workforce Skills Assessment — to help employers identify opportunities to develop effective employees, managers and leaders. The assessment identifies 17 skills that are critical to individuals, managers and leaders and bundles them into a validated competency model that employers can easily deploy in their own organizations.

Coca-Cola pledges up to $250,000 toward fundraising campaign through Casey’s

Throughout August, Casey’s General Stores customers can make an impact on schoolchildren’s lives through the annual Cash for Classrooms campaign. In partnership with Coca-Cola, Casey’s aims to raise $1 million to support K-12 public and nonprofit private schools in Casey’s communities.

The company will fundraise in three ways. Those purchasing at Casey’s stores can round up at the register or donate at checkout in the Casey’s app to raise funds for grants that enhance education and strengthen communities. They can also purchase Coca-Cola products, which generates five cents for each qualifying beverage purchase up to $250,000.

Paypal to spend up to $300 million on overhaul

Digital payments pioneer PayPal Holdings has begun a “large-scale initiative” to update its “existing technology infrastructure” at an estimated cost of as much as $300 million, the company said.

The effort is expected to occur over 18 to 42 months and resulted in a $95 million charge during the second quarter, including for employee severance and benefits costs, according to a PayPal quarterly filing Tuesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing said workforce reductions associated with the plan are expected to be completed by 2027.

Wellabe launches product for patients with critical illness

Wellabe, headquartered in Des Moines, has launched a new Critical Illness insurance product in 14 states to protect the well-being of customers suffering from cancer, heart attack, stroke or other critical illnesses. Underwritten by Medico Insurance Company, Wellabe’s Critical Illness insurance provides customizable coverage for individuals, couples and families that pays a lump-sum cash benefit.

2026 Iowa Thriving Communities announced

The Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) and Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) have announced the newly designated 2026 Iowa Thriving Communities: Clear Lake, Ottumwa, Sioux Center, Urbandale and Waukon.

Now in its third year, the Iowa Thriving Communities initiative recognizes forwardthinking communities that are proactively addressing workforce housing needs. Designated communities complete a highly competitive application process, including a live pitch from teams of local partners to a panel from IEDA and IFA.

Selected communities demonstrate best practices in planning, financial support, targeted development, leadership and employer engagement. They also invest in broader community assets like public health and the arts.

Communities previously recognized through the initiative are already seeing strong results, with increased developer interest and significant public and private investments in housing.

HNI Corp. acquires Steelcase Inc.

HNI Corp. and Steelcase Inc. announced that HNI will acquire Steelcase in a cash and stock transaction, with approximately $2.2 billion to Steelcase common shareholders.

Steelcase shareholders will receive $7.20 in cash and 0.2192 shares of HNI common stock for each share of Steelcase they own. The implied per share purchase price of $18.30 is based on HNI’s Aug. 1 closing share price of $50.62, reflecting a valuation multiple at transaction close for Steelcase of approximately 5.8x TTM adjusted EBITDA, inclusive of run-rate cost synergies of $120 million. Upon closing, HNI shareholders will own approximately 64% and Steelcase shareholders will own approximately 36% of the combined company.

The Omaha Zoo Foundation has announced the return of its signature biennial fundraiser, Zoofari 2025, set to take place on Sept. 12 at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. This year’s theme, “Under Wild Stars,” invites guests to embark on an evening celebrating wildlife conservation under the night sky.

Zoofari 2025 was planned to move beyond the traditional gala to offer attendees a journey through the zoo’s immersive environments. The event includes gourmet cuisine, live entertainment, up-close wildlife encounters and a silent auction featuring exclusive items.

This one-of-a-kind evening supports the zoo’s mission to inspire, educate and engage guests while conserving, nurturing and sustaining wildlife locally

Nominations sought for Manufacturing Awards 2025 EVENT, AWARDS TO RECOGNIZE EXCELLENCE IN MANUFACTURING

Celebrating innovation, craftsmanship and community impact, the 2025 Nebraska manufacturing awards will recognize the best of the state’s best companies. The awards will be presented during the Nebraska Chamber’s 2025 Manufacturing Summit.

“We’re excited to highlight the role homegrown manufacturers play in building a stronger, more competitive Nebraska,” said Todd Bingham, president of the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce that, along with the Nebraska Manufacturing Alliance, sponsors the awards.

The awards event will include naming the Nebraska Manufacturer of the Year. Past winners include Timpte (2024), and TMCO (2023) dating back to Reinke Manufacturing, the inaugural winner in 2008.

The nomination form may be found at nechamber.com/chamber-news. Nominations will be accepted through Aug. 15, after which a panel of manufacturing and business leaders from across the state will select the honoree.

“The Nebraska Manufacturer of the Year award celebrates a manufacturer whose innovation, efficiency and craftsmanship betters not only its own community, but the entire Nebraska economy,” Bingham said.

The 2025 roster of awards also includes announcement of the Coolest Thing Made in Nebraska award, presented by Pinnacle Bank. This competition, now in its fourth year, leads into the celebration of National Manufacturing Month in October. Sixteen products will be chosen from companies across the state and voted on through a

bracket-style competition that ultimately crowns one product the 2025 Coolest Thing Made in Nebraska.

“Manufacturing drives innovation and growth across countless industries throughout the state,” said Marc Hock, Pinnacle Bank president. “That’s why we’re excited to partner with the Nebraska Chamber and Nebraska Manufacturing Alliance for the Coolest Thing Made in Nebraska.”

Nominations for this competition were open through the month of July, and voting will happen this month. All Nebraskans are invited to vote for their favorite product to advance it to the next round.

The competition spotlights Nebraska’s dynamic manufacturing industry and brings together students, educators, community leaders and manufacturers to celebrate the 100,000+ Nebraskans working in manufacturing every day. Past winners include Kawasaki’s Rail Car, Rocket Mobility’s All-Terrain Tracked Wheelchair and Valley Irrigation’s Valley Center Pivot.

“Manufacturing is at the heart of Nebraska’s economy, driving innovation, providing quality jobs and fueling growth in communities large and small,” said Michelle Luett, assurance partner with RSM US LLP, which is a major sponsor of the summit.

North Platte to Host National Symposium ON

CATTLE REPRODUCTIVE STRATEGIES

Lincoln, Nebraska, Aug. 5, 2025 — Beef industry professionals from across the country will gather in North Platte this fall for the 2025 Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle symposium, a premier national event focused on beef cattle reproductive management.

The event is Sept. 17-18 at the D&N Event Center. A pre-conference program — including a seedstock panel discussion at TD Angus and a guided tour of the Sustainable Beef Packing Plant, a new beef processing facility in North Platte — will be Sept. 16.

The symposium provides a unique opportunity for producers, researchers and industry professionals to engage with leading experts on current and emerging reproductive technologies, genetic selection and herd health practices.

Rick Funston, professor and reproductive physiologist with Nebraska Extension, said the event provides practical, science-based information producers can apply to their operations.

“Our goal is to equip producers with the tools they need to make informed, cost-effective decisions that improve reproductive performance and long-term sustainability,” Funston said.

The symposium will feature presentations and panel discussions with nationally recognized experts. Topics will include estrous synchronization protocols and AI techniques; the use of sexed semen and embryo transfer; bull fertility, biosecurity and herd health; genetic selection for fertility and longevity; and the future of reproductive technologies.

Featured speakers include Funston, Matt Spangler, Jordan Thomas, Mario Binelli, Ky Pohler, Pedro Fontes and others representing universities, AI companies and genetic services. Industry partners such as ABS Global, Select Sires and Genex will also participate in panel discussions.

OMAHA FASHION WEEK FALL EDITION ANNOUNCED

Omaha Fashion Week has announced its fall 2025 edition will take place Aug. 20-24 at Omaha Design Center. The theme for the week is ÉLÉMENTAIRE, meaning elemental or back to the basics. In a release, the organizers stated that the focus is on the design process, allowing guests to experience atmospheric decor that includes larger-than-life sketches and elements of design that lend themselves to the looks people will see on the runway.

Omaha Fashion Week started in 2008 at a venue in the heart of the Old Market, with 12 designers, 20 models, and 2,000 attendees. It has grown to become the fourth-largest organized fashion week in the country, and the first to make show participation free of charge for designers.

Now in its 17th year, attendance has grown to more than 10,000 people annually, and OFW has developed a national reputation for nurturing young fashion designers. OFW draws designers and fans to Omaha from around the world. Behind the glitz and glamour of this red-carpet event, attendees find a commitment to education and a passion for supporting cultural vibrancy, creativity and innovation as drivers of economic stability and growth.

OFW is also a socially conscious organization that strives to serve as an incubator for fashion industry talent and provide opportunities for the Omaha community to enjoy a unique, red-carpet experience. The organization has helped to create a thriving local fashion ecosystem where fashion designers, design students and entrepreneurs can learn to make a successful career in the fashion industry. The organizers believe building an attractive place for talented professionals to call home is vitally important.

OFW believes in making a real difference in the lives of designers. Emerging and featured designers compete for Golden Shears awards. These winners are chosen by the OFW selection panels comprised of independent industry experts who spend the months leading up to shows mentoring and coaching designers. Each season, Omaha Fashion Week awards over $7,500 worth of prizes.

At this point, the designer selection process has wrapped, and the panel has assigned designers to categories based on levels of experience. Emerging designers are either brand new to the OFW runway, student designers or veteran designers trying out a new method of creation. Featured designers are experts at their craft who will showcase high-quality, ready-to-buy looks on the runway.

During the four days of OFW, 12 emerging designers and 13 featured designers will present their collections. Designers’ inspirations will be visible through pieces of streetwear, evening wear, avant-garde fashion and wearable art. Runway themes from designers will include historical re-imagination, nature, culture, maximalism or minimalism, and activism.

The designers include nine who are high school or college students, 13 returning designers and 12 new designers. These designers come from Nebraska as well as Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, Missouri, California, Illinois and Indiana.

The Aug. 20 Designer Showcase highlights some of the community programs that are helping to grow future fashion designers. Community collections will be presented by Develop Kids, Omaha Fashion Campers and Omaha South High School Fashion Program. Develop Kids will feature models under age 12 from Develop Model Management, giving them the experience of marching the runway in front of an audience. Omaha Fashion Campers, ages 11-17, will present looks they designed during Omaha Fashion Camp. This annual weeklong camp is hosted by Omaha Fashion Week and Develop Model Management. Also featured will be some of the students from Omaha South High’s fashion program.

From Aug. 21 to 23, headliners, emerging and featured designers will debut looks on the runway.

Bio:

Prior to joining AIM Institute, Mishala Lewis enjoyed her role as a curator of equitable, community-driven events and programs that activate the Omaha community. As the founder of an events management company, she not only produced signature experiences but also partnered with nonprofits to design and implement events that drive meaningful change and foster connection.

With expertise in conferences, summits, expos, symposia, nonprofit fundraisers and small business development, Lewis combines a deep understanding of community needs with innovative, missiondriven solutions to make each event impactful.

An Omaha native with a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Nebraska Omaha, Lewis was recently named the new marketing, events and communications director for the AIM Institute.

What is something a mentor told you that has been essential to your career and why?

Early in my career, I prided myself on being able to juggle everything myself. One of my mentors once told me, “Your ability to lead is not defined by how much you do, but by how well you empower others to do their best work.” That advice shifted my perspective on leadership, pushing me to focus on building trust, creating clarity and giving others the space to succeed. It’s made me more intentional about how I manage teams, delegate, and measure success — not by how busy we are, but by the outcomes we create together.

What led you to your particular field?

For over eight years, I have led events and marketing for a variety of nonprofit causes. My first event, the Resilient Women of Color Conference in Lincoln, empowered middle school girls to pursue higher education. That event brought together more than 100 girls across Nebraska, connecting them with facilitators who reflected their identities and experiences.

That event showed me the power of creating events that prioritize impact and meaningful connections over guest count. Since then, I have partnered with organizations such as I Be Black Girl, Juneteenth Joyfest, The Greater Omaha Chamber and the Urban League of Nebraska to produce experiences that leave lasting impressions and foster community growth.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your work?

One of the biggest challenges is balancing the need for innovation with the realities of time and resources. In events and marketing, there’s always an opportunity to do more: create a more immersive experience, reach a wider audience or personalize messaging even further. The challenge is choosing what to prioritize so that we not only meet immediate needs but also move our mission forward in a sustainable way.

For this reason, I recently led a presentation for Nonprofits Anonymous, an affinity group at Elevator coworking spaces, focused on the importance of using tools such as the “MissionImpact Axes“ to help nonprofit teams prioritize events and initiatives that align with their core purpose.

Additionally, working across multiple teams and audiences requires clear, consistent communication, which can be challenging in fast-moving environments. Those challenges keep me motivated to find creative solutions and build stronger processes.

What steps do you take to keep your life in balance?

I’d love to say I have a perfectly balanced routine but, realistically, I don’t. There are times I work well beyond 40 hours a week and have been known to ignore personal calls and texts when deep in a project. Still, I’m grateful for friends and family who keep me grounded and remind me to slow down, step away from the grind, and enjoy life outside of work.

What are your goals in your new role with the AIM Institute?

My primary goal is to expand the reach of AIM Institute’s mission to elevate tech talent across the Silicon Prairie. We focus on delivering high-impact, high-quality experiences, whether that’s the Heartland Developers Conference for seasoned developers and tech leaders, or Elevate Academy, which builds leadership and professional skills for emerging talent.

A key challenge is ensuring we reach every corner of the community, especially individuals who may not yet see themselves represented in tech. We also work to position our events and programs as not just accessible but truly relevant and valuable, so every participant sees a path for themselves in the tech ecosystem.

We thank our valued supporters and we welcome other community members to join us in our mission to double AIM’s impact by 2030 to ensure our region continues to be relevant in the ever-changing tech space.
