Dear Readers, November is here with the 83rd edition of MBE Business Magazine After enjoying a day off in September for Labour Day and day off in October for Thanksgiving, we are left with no days off in November. The end of fall is upon us as we get ready for the winter months that are just around the corner.

There are two things to look forward to in November. One is a guarantee and the other I’m not so sure about. I will discuss the latter first.

The first Sunday (technically Saturday night) in November comes the end of Daylight Savings Time. On Sunday November 6th at 2:00 am, the clocks are turned back – spring forward and fall back. We gain an hour in November (as opposed to losing an hour in the spring) to accommodate for more daylight in the mornings. What that means, is we wake up to the sun but when we come home at the end of the day, we are greeted by darkness. The days certainly seem shorter with less sunshine although some people prefer the end of daylight savings time as opposed to the beginning of day light savings time in March.

What people do look forward to is Black Friday! What is Black Friday, you ask? Thanksgiving holiday in the United States always falls on the fourth Thursday in November. This year it falls on November 24th. The day following Thanksgiving in the U.S. is known as Black Friday. What originally was a shopping day only in the U.S. with huge savings has now come to Canada as well. Most Canadian retailers gear up for their Christmas season starting on Black Friday. Expect long lines and great deals at most Canadian retailers on Friday November 25th – Black Friday

We are talking about business dealings in a corporate environment & how these business dealings are the source of legislative structure of an environment. The focus is on being efficient and being effective in terms of the business dealings. Are we talking about give & take or are we discussing the dealings that are the building blocks of a corporate culture? Well, as a matter of fact, the latter is true in terms of what we are trying to conclude in regards to the business dealings and its effectiveness.

A CORPORATE CULTURE IS DEPENDENT ON GOOD DEALINGS:

As a matter of fact, a professional business environment or a corporate culture is highly dependent on

business dealings. Fairness in dealings must always make things far more effective and far more determining. That is, in terms of the conclusions or the results. Obviously, it’s a result-oriented world and one needs to be far more conclusive & more practical in terms of being result-oriented. In fact, a corporate culture depends on fairness in dealings and laying an example of trust for many to follow.

HOW IT INFLUENCES PROFESSIONALISM?

Good business dealings not only influences professionalism, however, it also brings into play a culture that supports being professional. It creates a reputation that is worth the change,

especially for companies that are new and need to buildup on their reputation and goodwill that they have created in a short period of time.

Effectively, it’s something that makes a ‘Goodwill’ of a business and thus a name which is worth it.

Impressing your customers every time you make dealings with them creates a healthy rapport and a very healthy reputation. Regarding the work environment & creating a system of transparency while recruiting, retaining & firing is a huge necessity. The introduction and implementation of transparent retention strategies means dealing with the attitudes of employees with far more professionalism. Apart from this, being very fair in regards to hiring and firing and maintenance of a culture that purely rests on fairness. This surely means that the policy of equal opportunity needs to be implemented in the company all across the board.

All these are part of the professional company culture & things that needs to be maintained all across the board. A necessity for the sake of bringing sustainability & an attitude that means an attitude of pure professionals. Efficient and effective business dealings are in fact the building blocks of a company and the professional values a company creates for its long term goals. It can also be termed as mandatory mandates for corporate goals in a professional environment.

WORDLE IS FUN, WORDLEBOT IS NOT

There was a moment late last year in which you could barely escape Wordle. It’s the buzzy on-line game in which you have 6 chances to guess each day’s word, and for a while it lit up talk on social media and around dinner tables.

It proved so popular this year the New York Times acquired the game

from its creator for a cool million dollars.

The appeal of Wordle has always been clear. It can only be played once a day, so rather than the addictive quality of a lot of online distractions, Wordle is a pleasingly constrained relief.

As a game, it is neither easy, nor hard; whittling down word choices by accumulating the right letters with each guess provides just enough challenge to be enjoyable, but not so much as to frustrate. It also helps that it’s easy to share one’s outcome to Twitter or a group chat, which continues to give Wordle a uniquely social quality.

Perhaps as a result, Wordle has become part of many people’s daily routine. Every day, just after midnight, thousands spend two- or three-minutes puzzling over the newest entry, not taking it the least bit seriously.

In that sense, Wordle is the very definition of an idle distraction and perhaps an ideal one too.

But last month, the New York Times released the second version of what it calls its WordleBot, an analytics tool that lets you track how you’re doing in the game, how effective your choices of the first word is and more.

Like the game itself, WordleBot can be a fun bit of fluff.

But in turning a game into more fodder for data tracking it also feels a bit like when someone ruins a joke by explaining it.

As far from being an isolated thing, this contemporary tendency to

best to constantly learn as much about ourselves as we possibly can.

The watch on my wrist tells me each day how many steps I’ve taken. Each Sunday, my various devices tell me how much time I’ve spent staring at a screen and which apps have sucked up most of my week. We are all bombarded with numbers and stats about our own lives.

The tendency to track can be helpful in some ways. Our day-to-day habits can have a way of sneaking up on us. If we find ourselves more idle than we’d like, or snacking more than we’ve decided is good for us, the cold, analytic nature of data can help us break out of a rut to see ourselves in a different light.

But if a notification that I’m, say, spending too much time on my phone can sometimes be a useful nudge, this tendency to track everything can also become insidious.

If I ride my bike for 30 kilometres but didn’t record my effort, did it actually count? Am I maximizing my work day or can I optimize things to be more efficient, to do more, to achieve more – to be more?

the only things that matter re those that are tracked and the things that are tracked can always be made better or faster. But the things that make life worth living – the messiness of feelings, the irreducible nature of thought or personality, the time spent with others – aren’t things that can or should be quantified, nor should they relentlessly optimized. In the 2020s, it takes a certain kind of defiance to simply enjoy things and forget about tracking or analyzing it.

Despite it all. I still like Wordle, and will continue to play it daily.

But as for the new WordleBot – that I will soundly reject. Sure, it’s just a game, and the bot just a fun tool to learn more about how we play. But rather than one more thing that’s relentlessly analyzed to within an inch of its life, all I want from Wordle is a few minutes of distraction, not just from everything around me, but also a culture of ceaseless quantification.

Let a game be a game – and by extension, being human something for which there is no measure.

IT’S NOT ALWAYS EASY BEING GREEN

Would you date someone who sent you a text message in a green bubble? Assuming one is an iPhone user at least, that is an actual question people are asking themselves in the 21st century.

The issue at hand: messages sent between iPhones use Apple’s iMessage service and show up as blue on those devices. Incoming messages from an Android phone or an older device – SMS missives that lack modern features like reactions or typing indicators – show up in green.

The distinction has taken on a surprising sort of cultural dimension. Some iPhone users – very often self-styled as hip, successful or financially comfortable – disdain the green bubbles on their screens, turning them into markers of identity or class. Occasionally they’re even going so far as to claim it’s a deal breaker when it comes to romantic partners.

It all sounds a little silly – and it is –but the real question here is how messaging should work on our modern devices. Should how we communicate be a mix of proprietary services that change depending on what phone you bought or should there also be the option of a universal or shared standard?

Google has a clear answer. The company launched a new campaign called #getthemessage with the intention of shaming Apple into adopting RCS. As the message on Google’s Android s reads. “It’s time for Apple to fix texting.”

That standard, which stands for Rich Communication Services (RCS), is essentially the next generation of the traditional text message – those now out of date little notes that are limited to 160 characters.

An evolved text message makes a certain kind of sense. Just as, say, phone calls evolved to become clearer and more reliable as technology improved, so too should text messages, especially since they have become a fundamental part of how we communicate.

But texting, which works by sending a message from phone number to phone number, was supplanted by a slew of proprietary messaging services – most notably WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook; and iMessage, which only works on Apple devices.

For us end users, the reason was that those modern services were simply better. You could send little images, form group chats and see if people had read your message or if they were typing a message back to you.

But for the companies that provide those services, there is also an economic incentive to create their own little message silos. WhatsApp, for example, has also evolved into a payment service. And in many parts of Asia, WhatsApp – or in China, WeChat – is the way many people not only communicate but also conduct commerce.

For Apple, the draw is slightly different. In making messaging between iPhones seamless, but messaging between iPhones and Android phones clunky, it produces a

network effect. I myself have been prey to this: wanting to message easily between family members, I have encouraged them to buy Apple devices. Put more plainly: you just want your phone to be blue bubbles, not green.

This is the way Apple often works – its own stuff works best with its own stuff, so iPhone buyers then turn into iPad and MacBook or Apple Watch users.

But communication shouldn’t be proprietary or limited to particular companies. The act of communication should, by its very nature, be as open as possible. Anyone with a modern digital service should be able to connect with anyone else. Just as almost anyone can make a phone call, so too should anyone be able to send a modern message – and when the technology upgrades, then it’s time for everyone to get on board with a new standard.

In that sense, Google is right. Apple should in fact “get the message” and adopt the new RCS standard. To be clear, however, Google’s reasoning isn’t simply high-minded egalitarianism. Its own messaging strategy has been an unmitigated disaster. At certain times, it has had three or four separate messaging apps compared to Apple’s one. Part of the reason Google wants RCS to succeed is that its own efforts to build something useful and better have mostly failed.

Apple is doing right by itself and its shareholders, but we find ourselves in one those situations where things would be a lot better if a standard existed as an option in addition to all the other services.

It is yet another example that, when tech makes up part of everyday life, it is too important and too risky to leave it to the market and big tech. Regulating a standard for communication is exactly the role the state is meant to play, just as providing alternatives to those standards is what the market is meant to do. Right now, however, that delicate balance is out of whack – and at least for its part, Goggle is correct to try to put things back in order.

REACHING THE TIPPING POINT ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES

In Malcolm Gladwell’s book, “The Tipping Point,” he describes that magic moment where an idea, trend or social behaviour crosses a threshold from the domain of a few to the practice of the many. Without a doubt, we are reaching that point for electric vehicles, which now account for one in thirteen new vehicles registered in Canada, almost double the account from two years ago.

The growth is exponential and electric vehicles are becoming firmly mainstream. And why not? Lower cost models are entering the market and with gas refineries reaping profit margins that are over double of what

they charged three years ago, consumers are rightly making the switch. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, charging your electric car at home costs the equivalent of 30 cents per litre – or even less. It is no wonder polling shows 80% of Canadians are open to buying an electric car. With almost a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions in Canada coming from the transportation sector, transitioning to electric vehicles will make a big dent in the fight against climate change.

Transitioning the auto market to electric is ambitious but definitely within our grasp. Our Liberal govern-

ment had a plan to get there. We are investing in the automaking sector, battery production and charging infrastructure. We are also providing consumers with incentives to buy electric cars.

We aren’t the only ones at this. The recent passage of the U.S. climate bill included new purchase incentives. In countries such as Norway, already over half of all new vehicle sales are electric.

Mandated sale targets for electric vehicles are part of our plan. On the road to 100% electric for all new light duty vehicle sales by 2035, we’ll start off with 20% by 2026. By 2030, it

would be 60%. These sales targets provide certainty to those inventing in the sector, batteries and critical minerals, and charging infrastructure. The recent trend in sales shows we are well on the way to meeting our fist milestone.

Already B.C. and Quebec have sales mandates in place, which has helped them to be Canadian leaders in electric vehicle sales. Automakers are fulfilling those market demands, but as many buyers know, backlogged orders is a persistent issue. Sales mandates will help Canadians who want to buy an electric vehicle to do so.

But these targets are just part of the plan. We’re giving a boost to Canadian production of electric vehicles with huge investments and incentives across the entire electric vehicle supply chain. You may have noticed the partnerships our government has announced with auto manufacturers like the Ford plant in Oakville or the Stellantis plants in Windsor and Brampton that are creating and protecting good jobs.

Automakers should be commended for the rate at which they are transitioning their plants with many now committed to 100% electric vehicles by 2035. We’re here to support their efforts. And not just when these cars are built but when they’re bought, too.

It isn’t a stretch to say our government has been a leader in implementing vehicle purchase credits of up to $5000 for new and used electric vehicles. Many provinces, including B.C., Quebec and P.E.I., add their own subsidies on top of that. With the U.S. now offering similar subsidies, it tips the scales further toward an acceleration of the North American electric vehicle market.

More and more, Canadians can expect to see charging stations popping up on highways and in their communities. The P.E.I. government even offers a free charger for your home. Besides all the charging stations that private businesses and homes are installing , the federal government recently increased our commitment to support an additional 50,000 charging stations to a total of 84,500 from coast to coast in the next five years.

Finally, yet importantly, are the minerals needed for batteries. A few months ago, our government initiated a critical minerals strategy, which will help make Canada a leader in the production of key minerals such as lithium, nickel and cobalt. Since then, and after an all hands on deck outreach effort from our government, the U.S. announced they would remove proposed barriers on Canadian sourced cars and batteries to help them grow their booming electric vehicle market.

What does this mean for the average Canadian? Firstly, affordable electric cars powered by Canadian made products with affordable energy are on the horizon and it pays to make the switch. It means our country is taking the lead on an up and coming industry that will set us on course for a future of sustainable jobs and significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. Betting on electric vehicles is truly win win. We are working with all players to deliver cleaner air and more affordable lives for Canadians.

Although, Canada has a relatively healthy democracy, it’s a fact that the country has been facing challenges in the past. As Canadians it’s true that we have challenges regards to a strong rule of Law. Also, includes a Charter of Rights & Freedom and making the institutions independent. The real meaning of ‘Power’ has been hard to understand, but now it is getting easier. The power has literally become too much concentrated in the office of the PM. Metaphorically, they are being used merely as chess pieces for the sake of just achieving political agendas. Most of the time by the Govt. they are moved around from here to there on will. There are some of the most critical ways in which the grip of the PM’s office can be loosened. One of the most vital steps that needs to be taken is more free votes. Secondly, more private member’s bill. More debates that are precisely the parliamentary debates on national level and global issues. These issues includes Global warming & handling immigration. A higher amount of latitude to ask questions during the QA or Question & Answer period. Finally, and one of the most important ones being having a greater independence from parliamentary committees.

Stopping the TV Coverage of Parliamentary Committees:

The TV coverage of all the Parliamentary affairs, especially the coverage of the PC or Parliamentary Committees has made Canadian Politics more domestic. There is too much of an element of acting & too much theatre regards to the Parliamentary affairs making it a bit more unrealistic & look artificial. NAAEE Annual Conference, the acronym for North American Association for Environmental Education was held in Tucson, Arizona from 12th to 15th October 2022’. This was the annual conference for the North American annual conferences which took place this year in Arizona State in United States of America. The organization was formed in 1971, i.e. 48 years from today with a sole purpose of creating awareness and educating people regards to the Environmental education, awareness and other environmental reforms & hazards.

The organization is obviously a US-based Non-Profit organization and includes members from approximately 30 countries. It has got other 56 affiliate organizations all over North America, that includes USA, Canada & Mexico and other affiliate countries are outside North America, i.e. Asia and Oceania and has over 20,000 members.

NAAEE supports its own annual conference, supports teacher’s training programs in environmental education and also supports vital research regards to the impact of environmental education. The mission

is to stick with the promise of commitments for global environmental change and creating awareness regards to the climate change and its impacts. The sole purpose of the organization is environmental education, environmental advocacy and environmental literacy at global levels and more importantly the focus is North America. Canada and USA are the two countries, apart from Mexico that have contributed largely towards the efforts in areas of global warming, climate change, reduction in GHG emissions & playing a very vital role towards deforestation. The global water crisis is indeed something that

The Environmental organization NAAEE is highly committed to advancing equity and inclusion in the field of environmental education. All throughout the conference the focus was deeply on race, injustice, and sustainability in our plenary sessions and several workshops.

Our workshops shall bring cultural competence, support environmental justice, engage with new stakeholders and audiences and lasting partnerships. Also, honor traditional environmental knowledge that is a huge necessity and increase our reach and relevance throughout society. It also included affinity groups that includes EPOC or Environmental Professionals of Color and QEEN, i.e. Queer Environmental Education Network, focused entirely meeting on the global platform in Tucson, Arizona.

In the Ontario province, it’s the Glengarry County in Ontario that is a place historically named for its settlements of Scottish Highlanders. The village of Dundarave in West Vancouver is named after Dundarave Castle in Scotland, along the banks of Loch Fyne.

The impact of Scotland on Canada is very evident in public parks especially with preference to the names of the parks. more closely related to the Scotts, and the B.C’s Simon Fraser University’s Pipe band on winning the Pipe band Championship.

While we talk about the people & the progress, it’s imperative to know that Canada is a massive land of 5 million Canadians. These are just the ones who claim to have Scottish ancestry. Yes, it’s a surprise, but that’s how it is, amazing figures for people living too far away in Canada from a country in the United Kingdom, known as Scotland. Well, it is truly evident & visible that the Scottish-Canadians have made an indelible mark on this country.

The biggest example & the latest one being the Prime Ministers of Canada. One being the first one, i.e. Sir John A.Macdonald & the latest example being Justin Trudeau. Both having their roots from Scotland, while John A MacDonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Some of the ones being a bit less prominent but ones who fought for the rights of women in Canada being Suffragists Nellie McClung & the other one being Agnes Macphail. Both were activists who worked revolutionarily for the rights of Women in Canada.

What You Need to Know about the Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians (Foreign Buyers Ban)

In the last federal election campaign, three of the main political parties made commitments related to limiting or heavily taxing foreign buyers wishing to purchase property in Canada. While commitments varied slightly, the policy intent was similar – to temporarily limit or disincentivize foreign buyers in order to prioritize domestic ones, and to hopefully tamp down increasing home prices.

The experience with British Columbia’s Foreign Buyer Tax (implemented in August 2016) and the Speculation and Vacancy Tax (SVT) (introduced in the province’s ‘Budget 2018’), provides some indication on the impact of a ban on foreign buyers. Their experience suggests such measures have a small and often temporary effect on real estate markets, housing availability and affordability. The effects are largely isolated to large metropolitan markets, with no statistically significant impact in smaller communities.

On June 23, 2022, Parliament passed the Prohibition on the purchase of residential property by non-Canadians Act. Coming into force January 1, 2023, this Act: • Does not apply to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

• Applies to non-Canadians directly or indirectly purchasing residential property in Canada for a period of two years.

• Applies to residential property, including detached houses or similar buildings of one to three dwelling units, as well as parts of buildings such as semi-detached houses, condominium units, or other similar premises.

• Applies to direct or indirect purchases of residential property, including purchases made through corporations, trusts or other legal entities.

• Establishes penalties for non-compliance applicable to non-Canadians, as well as any person or entity knowingly assisting a non-Canadian in violating the prohibition.

The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) and REALTORS® have been strong advocates for governments at all levels to enact measures that will dramatically increase housing supply. While this measure may have modest impact on supply, we believe the federal government should proceed with caution.

We recently made the following recommendations to the government as part of a consultation process:

1. It should include a CUSMA exemption, treating property owners from the U.S. and Mexico in a similar fashion to Canadians to avoid a reciprocal response from our trading partners that could harm Canadians.

2. It should consider exempting purchase of established dwellings for redevelopment, providing the redevelopment genuinely increases housing stock, the project is completed within a specified time of the date of approval, and the existing dwelling is not rented out prior to demolition and redevelopment. This would include purchase of vacant land for residential dwelling development, subject to the development being completed and evidence of the project’s completion being submitted within a specified time of the date of approval.

3. Should consider existing measures at the provincial and municipal level when setting eligibility criteria, rates, and information disclosure requirements.

4. It should be re-evaluated once the impact of similar policies (such as Underused Housing Tax (UHT)) as well as evolving economic conditions can be reviewed.

5. It should take into consideration the compliance burden of implementation.

6. It should recognize that housing needs vary across provinces and a quota system should be considered to provide provinces some authority to tailor the ban as per their housing market requirements.
