SEPTEMBER 11, 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States – as well as the first American victory in the war on terrorism. The passengers and crew of Flight 93 took action, sacrificing their own lives to save others in defense of our country. We will never forget them. The LET’S ROLL FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL RIDE is an organized motorcycle event unlike any other to honor these 40 heroes and to raise funds for the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This special ride will gather groups of 40 riders at designated “flight path” locations – including Erie, Meadville/Conneaut Lake, Pittsburgh, Cranberry Township, Williamsport, Pottsville and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as well as Fairfax, Virginia. Each sponsored motorcycle will carry a flag bearing the name of one of the 40 heroes, and on September 11, 2011, will join hundreds of fellow riders from across Pennsylvania to travel to the Flight 93 National Memorial. All proceeds benefit the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign.

Exclusive Accommodations/Rates: A limited block of rooms (not included with sponsorship) has been reserved for sponsored riders at the Seven Springs Resort. Sponsors must be paid in full to reserve a room at a discounted rate. Reservations are first come, first serve. It is a mission that we take very seriously, and one in which we don’t just expect, but demand, results. Over the past year, the Association has enabled many of our more than 4,500 member companies to save in excess of $3 million in energy costs, through our low-cost energy program, the Employers’ Energy Alliance of Pennsylvania, Inc. In addition, through our attorney supported HR/Legal Hotline, we will have saved MBA members more than $110,000 in human resource/legal support in 2011 alone. As one of the largest employers’ associations of its kind in the United States, we also lobby tirelessly on our members’ behalf at the state and federal levels for pro-business legislation, and annually cater to the needs of more than 25,000 guests, who have attended business meetings and events at our state-of-the-art Conference Center,

In my experience, as an active member of this organization for more than 30 years and longtime Board member, the Association’s services are just the right resources that have helped many of our businesses thrive and prosper in an ever-changing and competitive business landscape, and, subsequently, have allowed the Association to thrive as well. It is one of the many reasons that I am so pleased to share with you this year’s Annual Report, the Association’s premier business-to-business publication. On the following pages, this special edition of the Business Magazine features not only this year’s Annual Event speaker Jack Welch and entertainment, The Victory Belles, who will make their appearance before our full capacity crowd of business and community leaders on June 28 at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie, but also the many people who are committed to the leadership of this organization. This issue also highlights our promanufacturing position for economic growth, our low-cost energy services, as well as our upcoming charitable

events — specifically, the Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride with honorary grand marshal, former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge. We've Become a Nation of Takers, Not Makers More Americans work for the government than in manufacturing, farming, fishing, forestry, mining and utilities combined.

If you want to understand better why so many states — from New York to Wisconsin to California — are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, consider this depressing statistic: Today in America there are nearly twice as many people working for the government (22.5 million) than in all of manufacturing (11.5 million). This is an almost exact reversal of the situation in 1960, when there were 15 million workers in manufacturing and 8.7 million collecting a paycheck from the government.

Even Michigan, at one time the auto capital of the world, and Pennsylvania, once the steel capital, have more government bureaucrats than people making things. The leaders in government hiring are Wyoming and New Mexico, which have hired more than six government workers for every manufacturing worker.

Now it is certainly true that many states have not typically been home to traditional manufacturing operations. Iowa and Nebraska are farm states, for example. But in those states, there are at least five times more government workers than farmers. West Virginia is the mining capital of the world, yet it has at least three times more government workers than miners. New York is the financial capital of the world — at least for now. That sector employs roughly 670,000 New Yorkers. That's less than half of the state's 1.48 million government employees.

Every state in America today except for two — Indiana and Wisconsin — has more government workers on the payroll than people manufacturing industrial goods. Consider California, which has the highest budget deficit in the history of the states. The not-so Golden State now has an incredible 2.4 million government employees — twice as many as people at work in manufacturing. New Jersey has just under two-and-a-half as many

Because in recent years only government agencies have been hiring, and because the offer of near lifetime security is highly valued in these times of economic turbulence. we could end up with a generation of Americans who want to work at the Department of Motor Vehicles. The employment trends described here are explained in part by hugely beneficial productivity improvements in such traditional industries as farming, manufacturing, financial services and telecommunications. These produce far more output per worker than in the past. The typical farmer, for example, is today at least three times more productive than in 1950. Where are the productivity gains in government? Consider a core function of state and local governments: schools. Over the period 1970-2005, school spending per pupil, adjusted for inflation, doubled, while standardized achievement test scores were flat. Over roughly that same time period, public-school employment doubled per student, according to a study by researchers at the University of Washington. That is what economists call negative productivity. But education is an industry where we measure performance backwards: We gauge school performance not by outputs, but by inputs. If quality falls, we say we didn't pay teachers enough or we need smaller class sizes or newer schools. If education had undergone the same productivity revolution that manufacturing has, we would have half as many educators, smaller school budgets, and higher graduation rates and test scores. The same is true of almost all other government services. Mass transit spends more and more every year and

yet a much smaller share of Americans use trains and buses today than in past decades. One way that private companies spur productivity is by firing underperforming employees and rewarding excellence. In government employment, tenure for teachers and near lifetime employment for other civil servants shields workers from this basic system of reward and punishment. It is a system that breeds mediocrity, which is what we've gotten. Most reasonable steps to restrain public-sector employment costs are smothered by the unions. Study after study has shown that states and cities could shave 20% to 40% off the cost of many services — fire fighting, public transportation, garbage collection, administrative functions, even prison operations — through competitive contracting to private providers. But unions have blocked many of those efforts. Public employees maintain that they are underpaid relative to equally qualified privatesector workers, yet they are deathly afraid of competitive bidding for government services. President Obama says we have to retool our economy to "win the future." The only way to do that is to grow the economy that makes things, not the sector that takes things. HEROES As Americans, we hold dear the phrase, “We will never forget.” As governor of Pennsylvania during that time, what is your memory of that fateful day, September 11, 2001? Actually, it was a beautiful day in northwestern Pennsylvania. I began the day in Erie and started with a visit to my mother who happened to be in the hospital at the time. I returned home and was advised by the Pennsylvania State Police that a commercial airliner had struck the first building and, by the time I got inside to talk to my chief of staff and try to learn more information, I believe the second building was struck. I was on the phone, making arrangements to come back to Harrisburg because there was so much uncertainty at the time as to what was going on, but it was pretty clear that America was under some form of attack. Then, while watching NBC News, I remember reporter Jim Miklaszewski heard an explosion on the other side of the Pentagon, which was the third plane. Next, the fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania. After several hours of waiting to get clearance, I was in a state police helicopter on my way back to Harrisburg. I went immediately to our emergency operations center that then-Lieutenant Governor Mark Schweiker had up and running, and we had everybody there. From that point on, I got into an old Army Reserve Chinook helicopter and flew to Shanksville.

What was going through your mind at that time? I think, like a lot of Americans, the horror and audacity associated with turning commercial airplanes into missiles was just almost beyond belief. I think there was a great deal of shock as to how anyone could be so cruel, so evil, so cavalier as to kill so many innocent people, and also the whole range of emotions of sorrow in the midst of the tragedy — empathy for the people involved, anger, and also a feeling of retribution or revenge. All those human emotions that one could possibly experience were pretty raw at the time, and I suspect that my emotions reflected that of most Americans. Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, you became the first secretary of Homeland Security for the United States. What are your thoughts on this post and its role in keeping our nation safe? First, I was grateful that the president (George W. Bush) gave me an opportunity to serve him because, like most Americans right after 9/11, in their hearts and in their minds, we were all saying, “What can I do to help?” The president gave me a job, and although it was unknown territory, unchartered waters, we knew we would be working our way through that together. I also think people need to understand that the department is just one of several agencies within the government that has responsibility, in conjunction with other agencies from the military and the intelligence community on down, to keep America safe and secure. It has played that role today well, not as effectively as we would all like because there are still challenges associated with restructuring the organization and getting timely intelligence from other agencies, but I think it has done a fairly effective job. of the defensive apparatus — the military plays offense, the FBI plays offense, but based on information shared with us, it would be our responsibility to defend, basically to set up a more defensive posture than an offensive posture in terms of the security protocol. Flash forward to today. Please tell us why you decided to get involved in the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign. I just closed my eyes prior to answering this question. I remember looking at the field in Shanksville as we descended for my press conference and ascended when I went back to Harrisburg. There is no debris field; there is nothing close to what I anticipated. There was just a large smoldering hole in the ground. It is a pretty dramatic view even today. So as governor, having both the responsibility and the opportunity to get there as soon as I possibly could, when the families asked me to participate, it was very easy for me to say, “yes.” It was just something that I had to do. What is the goal of the Campaign? The goal is about $60 million, and we are about threequarters of the way there; we have about $15 million to go. Obviously, the goal is to create a memorial that really recognizes and celebrates the heroism and the sacrifices of the 40 passengers and crew, and to give some meaning and interpretation to the visitors as to actually what transpired there. I think that is very important. It is the only hijacked plane that did not reach its intended target because of the intervention of the passengers and crew, and without a memorial I fear that we are going to forget that simple fact. The Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride is an offshoot of the 2011 Roar on the Shore® rally, set for July 14, 15 and 16 in downtown Erie, which is now recognized as one of the fastest-growing free motorcycle rallies in the United States. How important are fundraising efforts, such as the Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride, to your cause? First of all, to everyone associated with this effort, how grateful we are that they are willing to be part of this national effort to build a memorial. This may be one of the most unique fundraising initiatives we have ever been associated with. It is not only the dollars that they will raise but the fact that there will be even greater awareness because you have nine different groups of 40 cyclists coming from several points on the Pennsylvania-Virginia map, convening in Shanksville on September 11. People still pause, including myself, when a group of motorcyclists come by in their caravans. But this is not just one caravan,

it is nine, and this is not just a pleasure ride, this is a ride with a purpose. It is a pretty meaningful purpose. It is a historic process, and I think the magnitude of it should be recognized. I certainly do. You were recently named honorary grand marshal of the Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride, which will be held during the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. What are your thoughts on being chosen for this special honor? I am delighted to be asked because when you think of the events of that day, the governor from Erie was in Erie on the day that it happened; this is an Erie initiative led by friends from Erie, Pennsylvania, it was pretty easy to say, “yes.” What message would you like to share with the bikers and the communities that are supporting the Let’s Roll ride this year? I want all the organizers of Roar on the Shore® and the Let’s Roll ride to know how grateful I am but also how grateful the family members of the passengers and crew are. This is an extraordinarily generous offer involving several hundred people who are giving us their time. This is a weekend event to raise money and to enhance and increase awareness. I also want to leave them with one little tidbit that may make them feel better than they already do about this initiative. We have already seen one school textbook describing Flight 93 simply as, “and a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania.” No meaning, no interpretation, no mention of the sacrifice of the passengers and crew. No mention that we all know it was a fourth plane heading to Washington to bring its evil, horror and terror to some destination in the nation’s capital. I would like to find out who wrote that bloody thing “and a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania.” Well, what the Roar on the Shore® and Let’s Roll ride organizers are doing is saying, “No, it was so much more than that.” They understand it; they want the communities that they originate from to understand it, and so their contribution to give meaning to the sacrifice and heroism and, frankly, to ground our interpretation in America as to what happened that day is a very significant contribution to our effort. Bill Gates. Steve Jobs. Jack Welch. Each has been hailed as one of greatest business minds and innovators in a generation. Warren Buffett for his investment strategies. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs for their innovative technology. And, Jack Welch, of course, for his transformational management style. But what makes a great leader truly great? According to Welch, former chairman and CEO of General Electric, in an interview in the Harvard Business Review, “Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion. Above all else, though, good leaders are open. They go up, down, and around their organization to reach people. They don’t stick to the established channels. They’re informal. They’re straight with people. They make a religion out of being accessible. They never get bored telling their story.”1 Welch’s story, for one, is compelling to nearly every entrepreneur, executive or anyone interested in climbing the corporate ladder. Here is a man who led GE to record growth, profitability and market capitalization from 1981 to 2001 — and who did it strategically and succinctly. He communicated his vision effectively, by focusing on streamlining operations, acquiring new businesses, and seizing the opportunity to make every business under GE the best in its industry. “Leadership is about results, not experience, not education, or any of the other things that everyone claims is leadership,” Welch has said. “It's about being able to consistently deliver results, being able to recover from falling off that horse, and getting right back on ...”2

The Early Lessons of Winning

The details of Welch’s upbringing are typical of most any other middle-class American. He was born John Francis “Jack” Welch Jr. to John, a Boston & Maine Railroad conductor, and Grace, a homemaker, in 1935 in Peabody, Massachusetts, and was raised in Salem where he developed not only his passion for sports — and his lifelong devotion to the Red Sox — but the realities of winning and losing. It was during these formidable years that his mother taught him the importance of how to communicate candidly, to face reality and control his own destiny — lessons he frequently relied on throughout his career. For example, in his New York Times best-selling autobiography, Jack: Straight from the Gut, Welch describes a moment when his team had lost its seventh straight game and out of his frustration he threw his hockey stick across the arena, as he headed back to his locker room. His mother marched up to him after the game, shouting, “If you don’t know how to lose, you’ll never know how to win. If you don’t know this, you shouldn’t be playing.”3 What she said, “never left me,” wrote Welch. “… If I have any leadership style, a way of getting the best out of people, I owe it to her … And many of my basic management beliefs — things like competing hard to win, facing reality, motivating people by alternately hugging and kicking them, setting

stretch goals, and relentlessly following up on people to make sure things get done — can be traced to her as well.”4 Welch also took his mother’s advice when it came to selfconfidence and its role in getting ahead. “Confidence gives you courage and extends your reach,” Welch has said. “It lets you take greater risks and achieve far more than you ever thought possible. Building selfconfidence in others is a huge part of leadership. It comes from providing opportunities and challenges for people to do things they never imagined they could do — rewarding them after each success in every way possible.”5

Leverage and Seizing Opportunity

Welch himself reaped the rewards of studying hard and excelling in his academic pursuits. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts and master’s degree and doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois. He then returned to Massachusetts as a junior chemical engineer with GE developing new plastics at the company’s Pittsfield, Massachusetts facility. Ironically, his first job at the company was also almost his last. By the end of his first year, Welch was reportedly awarded a standard $1,000 raise — an amount given to employees who excelled or floundered, regardless of performance. Displeased with the bureaucracy he saw — and ultimately would do away with — he decided to look for another job, accepting a position with International Minerals & Chemicals outside Chicago. Greatest Business Leader author Janet Lowe, “lured him back with more responsibility and a higher salary.”6 It likely was the best decision he ever made. By 1968, Welch was running General Electric's entire plastics business, then a more than $26-million operation, helping to turn it into a billion-dollar business. Through the early 1970s, he began his steady ascent into increasingly challenging positions and moved swiftly up the corporate ladder, being named vice president of GE in 1972. “Over the next thirteen years at GE, I got four promotions. Each one felt terrific,” Welch noted in Winning. “I liked having more responsibility, making bigger deals, building bigger plants, and managing more people. It was really only in 1973 that it dawned on me that I had a shot at the company’s top job — and that I wanted it too. In an act of complete cockiness, I put that down on my performance evaluation under the question about career goals. Eight years later, I got my wish.”7 Welch moved up the ranks to become senior vice president in 1977 and vice chairman in 1979. At age 45, Welch became GE's youngest chairman and CEO in 1981, succeeding Reginald H. Jones. Welch has said he didn’t come into the role with a master plan, but his passion for business, directness and subsequent management techniques as a “tough-love capitalist” made him the most influential CEO of his era. “In the 1970s and 1980s, big business had too many layers …” he wrote in Jack: Straight from the Gut. “… In those days, I was throwing hand grenades, trying to blow up traditions and rituals that I felt held us back.”8

Transformational Strategies

According to sources, the first step in realizing that vision was dismantling much of the bureaucracy Welch had seen. He tore down much of the excesses of the old corporate structure. In fact, he is widely known for his nickname "Neutron Jack," a reference to the neutron bomb, for eliminating employees while leaving the buildings intact. And his premise of differentiation sent shockwaves through conventional management techniques. “One of the main misunderstandings about differentiation is that is only about people,” Welch stated in his best-selling book Winning. “That’s to miss half of it. Differentiation is a way to manage people and businesses.”9 Under Welch, GE cut businesses in which the company could not dominate the market in first or second positions. Next, he had managers cut the bottom 10 percent of GE employees, while he cut the bottom 10 percent of management.

Differentiation among people is “a process that requires managers to assess their employees and separate them into three categories in terms of performance: top 20 percent, middle 70, and bottom 10,” Welch explained in Winning. “Then — and this is key — it requires managers to act on that distinction…. “The top 20 percent of employees are showered with bonuses, stock options, praise, love, training and a variety of rewards to their pocketbooks and souls. There can be no mistaking the stars at a company that differentiates." But “managing the middle 70 percent is not about keeping people out of the bottom 10. It is not about saving poor performers…. Rather, differentiation is about managers looking at the middle 70, identifying people with the potential to move up, and cultivating them.”10 As for the bottom 10 percent, Welch has said, “they have to go.” “One of the best things about differentiation is that people in the bottom 10 percent of the organizations very often go on to successful careers at companies and pursuits where they truly belong and where they can excel.”11 Welch also became equally well known for his WorkOut initiatives where managers worked with their staff to determine strategies and tactics to improve the business — an idea based on candor, where everyone at every level in the company has a voice to express their ideas. “Whether it was a refrigeration plant in Louisville, Kentucky, where employees debated faster and better paint systems, or a jet engine plant in Rutland, Vermont, where employees had recommendations on how to cut cycle time in blade manufacturing, or a credit card processing facility in Cincinnati, where employees had ideas about billing efficiency, Work-Outs led to an explosion in productivity,” noted Welch. “They brought every brain into the game.”12 But it was his embrace of Six Sigma in the 1990s, a qualitycentric approach to business and people, which truly transformed the company in terms of competitiveness. Adopted from Motorola, the program was developed to maximize the efficiency of manufacturing processes through the minimization of production of defective units. When applied at General Electric, it became the largest quality control measure ever adopted in corporate America. In simple terms, Welch explained, “Six Sigma is a quality program that, when all is said and done, improves your customers’ experience, lowers your costs and builds better leaders. Six Sigma accomplishes that by reducing waste and inefficiency and by designing a company’s products and internal processes so that customers get what they want, when they want it, and when you promised it. Obviously, you want to make your customers more satisfied than your competitors do, whether you run Upper Crust Pizza or manufacture the most powerful jet engines.”13 Initiatives such as Six Sigma, globalization services and a focus on e-business helped make Welch’s years as CEO some of the most successful for GE. Among his accomplishments, for example, the company acquired RCA. According to sources, the RCA acquisition resulted in GE selling off RCA properties to other companies and ultimately keeping NBC as part of the GE portfolio of businesses. Likewise, Welch shifted GE business from manufacturing to financial services through numerous acquisitions. >

Welch also has rightly deserved the title of “philanthropist” for his charitable contributions, many made within his hometown. The Impact of True Leadership

“If there is anything I would like to be remembered for it is that I helped people understand that leadership is helping other people grow and succeed,” Welch wrote in Winning. “To repeat myself, leadership is not just about you. It’s about them.

For instance, in 1980, the year before Welch became CEO, GE recorded revenues of roughly $26.8 billion; in 2000, the year before he left, they were nearly $130 billion. The company went from a market value of $14 billion to one of more than $410 billion at the time of his retirement, making it the most valuable and largest company in the world.

“I would also like to be remembered as a huge advocate of candor and meritocracy, and believing everyone deserves a chance.”15

Indeed, when Welch turned over the reins of the company to successor Jeffrey Immelt in 2001, he went out as the CEO of a company that everyone either wanted to work for or own. And statistics show the impact of his leadership and direction.

As one of America’s greatest CEOs, Welch certainly has become a global legend for those reasons and more.

“Some observers,” noted Lowe in Jack Welch Speaks, “claim that Welch’s greatest contribution to GE has been the matching of technology and markets. Others say it is his role as a change agent. A Patriotic Salute to the USA

Whether it’s their red, white and blue patriotic costumes or their harmonic melody that harkens back to the songs of The Andrews Sisters, the emotional and nostalgic performance of the Victory Belles is one not to be missed. The vocal trio, which has become a mainstay at the National World War II Museum headquartered in New Orleans, is making a special appearance at the Manufacturer & Business Association’s Annual Event on June 28 in Erie. It’s a dazzling performance chock full of Word War II-era musical classics, such as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Don’t Sit under the Apple Tree,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and “I’ll Be Seeing You,” as well as a salute to the five branches of the Armed Forces and a moving rendition of “God Bless America.” “I expect,” explains Victoria Reed, director of the Belles, “it will be a hair-raising and emotional experience for everyone that night.” Reed, who produced, directed and performed in USO shows for 10 years and was the entertainment director for the USO in New York from 1996 to 2002, joined USO World Headquarters, creating the USO Liberty Belles and American Spirit. Her recent group, the American Belles, which performed during the Roar on the Shore® bike rally in Erie in 2009 to benefit the local veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, served as the USO Liberty Belles for USO World Headquarters from 2003 through 2006. The Belles were the only USO troupe ever associated with USO World Headquarters in the organization's history. “I just sort of took what I thought was the epitome of the 1940s,” Reed says of the act. “But the veterans really had a lot to do with the building of the show, so I feel like it is full of a lot of heart, because it is from years and years of

going to veterans’ hospitals and talking to the veterans and learning what they liked.” According to the entertainer, it has always been a privilege and inspiration to perform before those who have served their country proudly. “I had never experienced such an emotional moment until we sang ‘God Bless America.’ Many of the veterans would grab your hand so hard and they wouldn’t let go, and there would be tears running down their faces, and I was like, this is what patriotism is. This is what it’s all about,” Reed recalls of her early performances. “I was so attached to how it made them feel that I just wanted to make a life of bringing shows to our veterans and active duty.” Recently, Reed decided to take her talents South to the Smithsonian-affiliated National World War II Museum, formerly the D-Day Museum, where she is entertainment director for the newly named Victory Belles at their The Stage Door Canteen. The venue features such productions as “On The Air,” a live radio broadcast set in 1945 featuring dancing, singing and a 17-piece big band, as well as photographs of all the stars — Bob Hope, Dinah Shore and Lena Horne, among others — who have performed in the Stage Door Canteens across the country and around the globe during World War II. “It’s a really great space,” explains Reed of the new theater, “and I’m really proud to be able to keep the music of the 1940s alive every day.” With their upbeat, big band sound, the Victory Belles’ allAmerican salute continues to celebrate that patriotic era and our nation’s heroes. When asked what sets Northwest Savings Bank apart as a commercial lender, Donna Carlino, senior vice president of the local bank’s commercial lending division, smiles broadly and says, “That’s easy. We’re local.” With 20 bank offices in Erie County, and 150 more in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Maryland and Florida, Northwest Savings Bank can be reached easily from almost anywhere in this area. Carlino says it’s exactly the same with the company’s commercial lenders. “We live here,” she says. “We not only work here, we’re all involved in our communities. We serve on local boards. We know the local markets, local businesses, the local economy and local conditions. Best of all, we have local lending authority. We don’t have to wait around for decisions on our loans to be made by some committee from out of town. We make the decisions right here in Erie County.”

“Furthermore,” she adds, “we get the privilege of developing relationships with our clients. We get to become friends, to be involved with them and their business. The business person gains a resource as well as a loan, someone to turn to for help and advice. And it’s not just one person. She points out that this is a major benefit for the bank’s customers. “Northwest is a local, hometown bank,” she states. “A customer can talk to a lender face to face, either at the bank or at their place of business, and get an answer ... quickly. “Seven of them are commercial lenders and they’re seven of the best commercial lenders in Northwestern Pennsylvania. They’re experienced and flexible and they have a wide range of management experience. They’ve made commercial loans of every type term, letter of credit, line of credit, construction, Municipal, and so on to every type of entity possible, from manufacturers to nonprofits to real estate development, professional developments and many more," she states. “Commercial lending is not a ‘one size fits all’ kind of endeavor. It takes skill and experience to find the right way to accomplish a client’s goals. Our people can do that.” One of the most important things to stress, she says, is that Northwest Savings Bank is making loans. Since 2008, many banks have found it difficult to grow their commercial loan portfolios. Northwest has seen substantial growth in recent years and sees no reason that the trend should not continue. “The economy hasn’t kept our bank from making loans,” Carlino explains. “We plan to make many, many more right here in the years to come.”

True, it has been a challenging economic time for many businesses, but those of you who have taken on leadership roles in your companies have kept your eye on the future — as the Board of Governors has — working feverishly to attain your organization’s most critical goals. And that is why here, at the MBA, we are proud to play a small part in those accomplishments in any way we can. The Association’s focus, as it has been for the past 106 years, is providing the assistance and resources to help area businesses succeed. It’s true. No broker fees. No kidding. The Employers’ Energy Alliance of Pennsylvania, Inc. (EEA-PA) buys energy directly from the power grid at wholesale prices and passes the savings directly to its customers – who’ve already saved more than $3 million in little over a year.

For employers, exercising their right to choose an electricity supplier can mean a significant savings to their operation’s bottom line. And since artificial rate caps were lifted throughout Pennsylvania on December 31, 2010 — the first time in 15 years — that choice has been made simpler thanks to programs, such as the Employers’ Energy Alliance of Pennsylvania, Inc. (EEA-PA). A subsidiary of the Manufacturer & Business Association, the EEA-PA, established in 2009, offers businesses of every size the opportunity to obtain the best electricity rates possible for less than what the utility is able to sell it for — giving these employers more financial control. For example, participating EEA-PA members in PPL territory were able to realize an average savings of about 22 percent compared with PPL. In the Penelec territory in May 2011, customers saw an estimated average savings of approximately 24 percent in their energy costs. “Already, the EEA-PA has generated more than $2 million in savings for our customers in 2010 and approaching $1.5 million in the first four months of 2011,” explains EEA-PA President J. David Bell. “It’s energy savings made simple.” For employers who don’t have the time for an exhaustive search of electricity suppliers, but want to reap the benefits of energy choice, the EEA-PA is an ideal solution.

The Alliance utilizes a simple enrollment process and eliminates the added costs of broker fees, marketing costs or profit margins by buying energy direct from the power grid. Participating EEA-PA members also enjoy the flexibility of a short-term contract while significantly lowering their energy bills. “It’s a typical problem you have as a small-business owner that you don’t have enough time to do everything that needs to be done, such as finding an alternative energy supplier,” explains Bell. “The EEA-PA is an easy way to decrease your energy costs and add money in your pocket that you didn’t have last month.” Benefiting Companies of All Sizes, Industries One of the unique aspects of the EEA-PA program is that eligibility is not restricted by size or industry. Not only can larger companies — using in excess of 30 million kilowatt hours a year — benefit from the program, but also small- and medium-size businesses, such as nonprofits, schools, dentist and doctor offices, retail stores and manufacturers. To participate in the EEA-PA, however, these businesses must be members of the MBA, the largest employers’ association of its kind in the United States, which is comprised of more than 4,500 companies who employ more than 165,000 people throughout 27 counties in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. MBA membership is a sound investment that gives these employers a diverse group of free and discounted services — from legal and HR consulting to professional development and computer training, insurance and employee benefit products, conference center facilities, payroll services and government affairs support — all designed to help their businesses succeed. “The EEA-PA and MBA are a powerful resource for employers,” says Bell. “When you become a member of the MBA utilizing our low-cost energy savings program, you are gaining a competitive advantage for your operation.” Ensuring that Your Company is the Right Fit In order to be eligible for the EEA-PA, the Alliance first conducts an energy analysis on every customer to ensure that the company’s electricity use can benefit from the program. The analysis requires only the company name, address, phone number, meter number and signature, along with a copy of a recent bill, to compare the EEA-PA price to the utility price and project the estimated savings. Once the analysis is reviewed with a representative of the EEA-PA, a business can then proceed with the application process. This streamlined process includes completing an MBA membership application, if not a member already, credit check, billing history and/or payment release. “In most cases,” notes Bell, “a business can be fully enrolled in the program in about 30 to 45 days.”

Under the current program model, the EEA-PA can supply electricity in any way the member customer desires. Some want the lowest possible cost, which can be achieved by purchasing on the day-ahead market (DAM). Some larger users, which exceed 10 million kilowatt hours a year, will fix a block of energy for a year to assure a budget is met, or a portion of the load will be fixed and a portion will be purchased on the DAM. He received his master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1987. Wisinski is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he served proudly in the Vietnam conflict. The New Life Program provides long-term transitional housing plus spiritual and physical rehabilitation for men, most of whom suffer from the disease of addiction. ECM also provides between 200 and 300 free meals a day to any man, woman and child in need. Emergency groceries and clothing are available weekly, and the ECM operates the Thrifty Shopper and Angel Bay stores that benefit Mission programs. “None of this happens without the many wonderful donors and volunteers who have a heart for the Mission,” says Crocker. Pastor Rick Crocker joined the Erie City Mission team in late 2009 after a very successful 20 years as pastor and religious leader at First Alliance Church in Millcreek Township. Sekula joined the Foundation with more than 15 years of handson leadership in philanthropy and nonprofit management. She was a senior manager with Dewey and Kaye in Pittsburgh where she provided a wide range of management guidance to nonprofit organizations and philanthropic foundations including strategic planning, organizational assessment, research and collaborations. She was responsible for managing a $2-million foundation and the nonprofit initiative — The Community Quality Institute. Major advancements in psychiatric treatments and medication resulted in the annual discharge of hundreds of patients from state hospitals. Many of these individuals lacked self-care and social skills and knew little about life outside of the hospital.

HANDS is an not-for-profit organization that believes in a holistic approach for all its residents by coordinating educational and supportive service opportunities to improve the quality of life for families, seniors and disabled individuals. With four dozen housing developments resulting in the production of more than 1,000 units of affordable housing in nine counties, Scalise says, “We are just getting started!”

Today, according to President and CEO Bill McCarthy, Stairways Behavioral Health is Joint Commission certified, and is the most progressive mental health care provider in Erie and Crawford counties, serving more than 9,000 people annually and employing more than 400 full- and part-time mental health professionals.

On April 6, 1961, 22 members of the Erie Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women launched “Stairways” – named for the staircase clients walked up to arrive at the social rehabilitation center and toward a new life.

The conviction of the founders remains Stairways’ mission 50 years later: assisting persons with mental health-care needs at any stage of life in their recovery by providing comprehensive rehabilitation, treatment and supports essential for living, working, learning and participating fully in the community.
