The MBA’s 120th Year Marks Celebration, Transformation
In 2025, the Manufacturer & Business Association — now officially branded as The MBA — marks its 120th year of helping employers succeed with a renewed sense of energy, identity and purpose.
The milestone year has been one of celebration and transformation.
In June, guests gathered at the Association’s headquarters in Erie for a special “Party on the Patio” Open House, welcoming members and community leaders alike to enjoy an evening of food, music, networking and reflection on the Association’s proud history and bright future. The event served as the official unveiling of The MBA’s new name, vibrant logo and streamlined website — all designed to better reflect the Association’s modern, solution-driven approach to business advocacy and employer services.
In July, thousands of passers-by got the first glimpse of our new MBA sign erected along West 38th Street, with the help of Howard Industries. The new sign can be seen even by drivers along the Interstate — making The MBA even more visible within our community.
Throughout 2025, The MBA Business Magazine has spotlighted remarkable business leaders in its ICONS of Industry series — paying tribute to the entrepreneurs, manufacturers and changemakers who’ve made lasting contributions to the region’s economy and community.
And, on October 8, our signature celebration will take place at the Bayfront Convention Center: The MBA’s 120th Annual Event — a landmark gathering of industry leaders, policymakers and employers from across the tri-state region, featuring a dynamic keynote speaker and a salute to the legacy and future of business leadership.
In her keynote address, Dana Perino will share a powerful presentation on what it means to lead with resilience from her experience as a former White House press secretary, a co-anchor of America’s Newsroom, co-host of The Five, and bestselling author of multiple books, including her latest, I Wish Someone Had Told Me... The Best Advice for Building a Great Career and a Meaningful Life
We’re also excited to finally welcome Maxine Reyes to sing our National Anthem. Reyes is a combat veteran who served in two branches of the U.S. military, built a business from the ground up, and still finds time to perform the National Anthem for professional sports teams and nonprofit galas across the country.
In this year’s Annual Report, we’ll also highlight the many programs and services that make The MBA so unique, including our annual MFG Day celebration held earlier in the day on October 8 at the Bayfront Convention Center.
Know that we are proud of our history, but we are even more excited about what lies ahead for our membership.
With a strong foundation, visionary leadership and member-driven mission, The MBA is poised to continue its legacy of service, innovation and impact for decades to come!
Sincerely,
Matt Clark MBA Board Chairman Manufacturer & Business
Association
MBA Board of Governors Chairman Matt Clark is the vice president and general manager of Humes Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM in Waterford. He is also president of Humes Ford of Corry, president of the Erie County Auto Dealers Association and immediate past chairman of the Pennsylvania Auto Association.
More Than 80 Years of Excellence in Serving the Storage Rack Market
HISTORY
At the end of WWII, there was a growing need to modernize and expand the nation’s warehousing capabilities. Entrepreneurial business people began to develop innovative storage rack designs to fill those needs. Company after company was springing up, headed by owners who carved out a market share by providing a high level of personal service. In recent decades, however, most of those early family owned companies have been replaced by holding companies, investment bankers or corporate raiders. Virtually no companies like Ridg-U-Rak still exist.
Ridg-U-Rak was a minor player in those early years. Although limited in marketing vision and hampered by a lack of manufacturing automation, Ridg-U-Rak had some survival strengths that helped the company to continue to grow. Today, as the operation celebrates more than 80 years of serving the storage rack market, Ridg-U-Rak is commonly acknowledged as a company built on Integrity and Service, guided by the able leadership of President
and CEO John B. Pellegrino Sr., P.E., Vice President of Plant Operations John B. Pellegrino Jr. and Vice President of Sales and Engineering Mark E. Pellegrino.
CAPABILITIES
Ridg-U-Rak now has two plants in North East, Pennsylvania, covering 160,000 square feet, with a production capacity of more than 140,000,000 pounds of finished steel products per year. With the addition in 2018 of its five-and-a-half-acre, under roof, warehouse and distribution center, RidgU-Rak has greatly increased the efficiency of its shipping department and freed up space for increasing manufacturing capacity at the main plant. These improvements are what contribute to it remaining one of the largest storage rack manufacturers in North America, and it is still a family owned business.
One of the key contributors to the company’s success has been the increased

talent base of its staff, with the ability to completely manage large projects from design and code compliance, through manufacturing, to final installation and customer approval.
Major capital investments in its manufacturing plants have been instrumental in improved productivity. Recent investments include the latest rolling mill equipment, a total shop layout re-vamping, an automated beam manufacturing line, and a 600-foot-long state-of-the-art powder coating line, which not only improves product quality, but also the company’s environmental imprint by reducing its liquid paint usage. From recycling programs to major transformations in manufacturing processes, the corporate philosophy includes doing what is necessary to meet 21st century sustainability expectations.
PRODUCTS
Ridg-U-Rak provides an unlimited array of storage options. Whether heavy industrial storage racks for large warehouses, deep and dense storage systems like Push-Back, Drive-In, and Pick Modules, or Narrow-Aisle and Deep-Reach systems, design engineers can layout storage arrangements to meet a customer’s unique load, throughput and capacity requirements. Ridg-U-Rak also provides small storage systems for pallet loads or hand-stacked cartons, and offers replacement parts that interchange with competitive racks. Many specialty storage options are available, including a racksupported crane system to store large dies and tools.

A ‘Reyes’ Combat Veteran Maxine
When Hurricane Milton swept through Florida last year, the storm didn’t just wreak havoc and cancel flights in the Sunshine State — it postponed something MBA attendees were deeply looking forward to: Maxine Reyes performing the National Anthem at the Association’s Annual Event.
But in 2025, she’s back — and this time, with clear skies on the horizon.
“Some things are worth the wait, and we absolutely believe hearing Maxine perform is one of them,” says MBA President and CEO Lori Joint. “Her story, her energy and her presence embody the American spirit, and we are thrilled that she will be able to sing for us this year.”
Reyes will finally take the stage at the Association’s 120th Annual Event on October 8 thanks to sponsor Bonnell's Truck & RV Collision, delivering the National Anthem with the same heart and intention she brings to everything she does.
And that’s saying a lot — because Reyes is a woman who does it all.
A BORN LEADER
Reyes is not your average performer. She’s also a rare kind of leader — one who has served in two branches of the U.S. military, built a business from the ground up, coached couples to stronger relationships, written a bestselling book, and still finds time to perform the National Anthem for professional sports teams and nonprofit galas across the country.
Reyes
Maxine Reyes is a talented musician and military veteran who has dedicated her life to serving others. She will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at The MBA’s 120th Annual Event on October 8 in Erie.
‘Reyes’ of Sunshine
Brings Courage, Grace — and Her Voice — to The MBA’s 120th Annual Event
But more than her titles and accolades, Reyes is known for her purpose. Everything she does is driven by a simple but powerful life philosophy: live with courage and grace.
It’s no surprise then that her signature brand, With Courage & Grace®, carries that very name. It's a reflection of how she lives — and how she inspires others to live — with intentionality, balance and meaning.
FROM BIG DREAMS TO COMMANDING PRESENCE
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in the parish of Manchester, Reyes’ early years were marked by quiet ambition. Despite this, she harbored big dreams of becoming a broadcaster and hosting her own radio or TV show. Determined to overcome her shyness, Reyes embarked on a personal journey to build confidence and develop her stage presence by volunteering to sing and speak as often as possible.
After immigrating to the United States, Reyes joined the military, serving with distinction in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. In addition to serving in combat zones in Afghanistan and Qatar, her career included commanding troops, briefing senior leaders and representing her unit at official events. Those experiences became more than lines on a résumé — they became life-shaping moments that deepened her resilience and sharpened her voice.
It was during these years that Reyes’ public speaking skills blossomed. Her commanding presence, confidence and
clarity are not just natural gifts — they're the product of years of hard work, discipline and service.
SINGING AND SPEAKING WITH PURPOSE
Today, Reyes is a national keynote speaker, certified transformational and relationship coach, and an in-demand National Anthem performer. She’s addressed audiences ranging from the president of the United States and Wounded Warriors to college students, military families and women’s empowerment groups.
She also co-authored the Amazon bestselling book Happily Joint: The Secret to Relationship Resiliency, a deeply personal and practical guide to building strong partnerships, which she wrote alongside her husband.
For Reyes, relationships — whether personal or professional — are at the core of everything. “True plenitude lies not in material wealth, but in the abundance of intangible treasures — fulfillment, joy and the impact of authentic relationships.”
MAKING AN IMPACT
A community leader of social impact, Reyes is a two-time recipient of the Humanitarian Service Medal and Military Outstanding Volunteer Medal. She has mentored hundreds of personnel and gained notoriety for her exceptional leadership style and community service by being named Military Person of the Year in her hometown of Miami by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and received a proclamation from the City of Orlando
naming July 14, 2016 as forever known as Captain Maxine Reyes Day. Most recently, she was selected by the Florida Cabinet and the Governor as an inductee into the Florida Veterans Hall of Fame for Class of 2022.
Whether she's mentoring young women, working with veterans, coaching couples or speaking from the stage, Reyes brings this philosophy with her. She reminds others — especially busy leaders and business owners — that success is not about doing everything, but about doing the right things with purpose.
Her mantra: “In all things, do so with love, courage, grace and gratitude.”
LONG-AWAITED MBA APPEARANCE
After last year’s weather-related delay, Reyes’ long-awaited appearance at The MBA’s 120th Annual Event will be a moment worth savoring — for both her and MBA members.
“We are truly grateful to have Maxine join us,” says Joint. “To have her perform at this milestone event in Erie is truly something special.”
From Jamaica to the U.S. military, from shy student to bestselling author, and from stormy weather to center stage, Reyes is proof that grace and courage really can carry you anywhere.
And on October 8, it’ll be front and center at the Bayfront Convention Center.

MILLER PUMP SUPPLY, INC.:
‘We
Don’t Just Sell Pumps — We Build Relationships’
HUMBLE ORIGINS
Percy “Pete” Miller was a World War II veteran and longtime owner of the KOA Campground in McKean, Pennsylvania. A hands-on entrepreneur, Miller took pride in maintaining the campground’s infrastructure and, in the process, developed a deep understanding of the water supply and waste removal needs of both residential and commercial properties.
Recognizing a growing demand across Northwestern Pennsylvania, Miller launched Miller Pump Supply in 1955 to provide a reliable, local source for plumbers, hardware stores and contractors to access the pumps and parts they needed — affordably, efficiently and without delay. Miller started the operation in his garage and, in 1962, registered the business with the Pennsylvania Department of State and relocated operations to a dedicated storefront on the 4900 block of Peach Street in Erie.
EXPANSION AND GROWTH
During Erie’s commercial boom in the late 1960s, Bob McCammon, owner of McCammon Equipment, the region’s go-to for commercial, industrial and fire pump systems, purchased Miller Pump Supply, merging operations under the trusted Miller name. Bruce Swanson was hired to lead residential operations, and Sid Himes to expand industrial and commercial sales. Having previously worked with Himes, McCammon recognized his unique blend of technical expertise and service-first mindset was the catalyst the company needed to enter a new era of growth and innovation.
In 1990, McCammon introduced in-house repair services by bringing on Dave Barnhart. Barnhart quickly became a cornerstone of the company, admired for his honesty, patience and deep technical knowledge. Even after 35 years, many customers still affectionately call him “Dave Miller,” assuming he must be the owner — a nod to his tenure and the personal care he brings to every interaction.
For over 70 years, Miller Pump Supply has been Northwestern Pennsylvania’s trusted source for high-quality pumps, water systems and expert support. Shown here are (from left): Kyle Himes, Pat Brown, Chris Smith, Dave Barnhart, Sid Himes, Jon Blanchard and Adam Himes.
Later that year, McCammon sold the business to Himes and Swanson, remaining on board part-time until his retirement in 1996. Himes’ wife Cindy also joined the team around that same time, stepping in as office manager. She exemplified a “see it, do it” culture that inspired everyone around her, and continues to define the business today.
In 2000, Miller Pump Supply welcomed Chris Smith, a detail-oriented electrical systems expert whose dedication and drive strengthened the company’s commercial and industrial division, which he continues to lead today. Shortly thereafter, Himes’ son Kyle joined the team under Barnhart’s mentorship. Over the past 20 years, Kyle Himes has developed into one of the region’s top experts in residential water systems, garnering respect for his problem-solving ability and genuine rapport with customers.
A FAMILY LEGACY TAKES ROOT
With this infusion of new talent, business flourished, and Miller Pump Supply entered another period of rapid growth. Following Swanson’s retirement in the early 2000s, Sid Himes incorporated the company Miller Pump Supply, Inc. and relocated operations to a larger facility at 9910 Peach Street in Waterford, its current location.
The team thrived under Sid and Cindy Himes’ leadership. They fostered a supportive workplace culture by offering competitive compensation, paid health care, flexible time off and an emphasis on shared responsibility. In 2015, they expanded the team by hiring Jon Blanchard as office manager, a former math teacher with a strong aptitude for accounting and operations. This enabled Cindy Himes to transition to part-time and eventually retire.
In the early 2020s, succession planning became a priority.
Miller Pump Supply, Inc. features more than 100 product lines for everything from well pumps and water softeners to fire protection and municipal systems.
Pictured here are Dave Barnhart and his longtime protégé Kyle Himes, still using the same service panel to test pumps that Pete Miller installed in back in 1965.

True to their faith, Sid and Cindy Himes placed the process in God’s hands, as they had always done during times of challenge. In what felt like divine timing, Cindy’s brother, Pat Brown, joined the team in 2022. Today, Brown supports residential sales and shadows Sid on fire pump startups, preparing to assume responsibility for the last technical specialty still held solely by Sid.
CARRYING THE LEGACY FORWARD
In 2024, Sid Himes’ eldest son, Adam, left a 25-year career in aerospace to join the family business as co-owner and managing director.
Adam Himes stepped in with a commitment to carry the company forward, not by reinventing it, but by building on the foundation laid by those before him.
Surrounded by family and rooted in community, he felt called to this work, choosing people and purpose over the corporate path.

Dana Perino is the keynote speaker for The MBA’s 120th Annual Event on October 8 in Erie, Pennsylvania.
DANA PERINO
Resilient Leadership in Divided Times: Lessons from the White House, Cable News and a Life Unscripted
Editor’s note: The following interview was conducted by The MBA Business Magazine as a very busy Dana Perino was getting ready to board a flight — proof that even in the whirlwind of daily headlines and breaking news, she still makes time for meaningful conversations about leadership, purpose and what it means to endure with grace.
When Dana Perino takes the stage at The MBA’s 120th Annual Event in Erie, Pennsylvania on October 8, she’ll bring more than just name recognition and star power. As a former White House press secretary, co-anchor of America’s Newsroom, co-host of The Five, and bestselling author of multiple books, including her latest, I Wish Someone Had Told Me... The Best Advice for Building a Great Career and a Meaningful Life, Perino offers thoughtful insights into what it means to lead with resilience.
“Dana Perino is a well-respected political commentator and journalist whose small-town upbringing helped shape the professional journey that ultimately led her to the White House, and we are thrilled to have her share the lessons she’s learned along the way,” explains MBA President and CEO Lori Joint. “Her presentation, ‘Resilient Leadership in Divided Times,’ will give our members strategies for navigating conflict with empathy, fostering productive dialogue and building consensus. She will share compelling stories and practical tools for leading with integrity and connection — even in the toughest moments.”
From ranch life to the White House, from briefing rooms to cable news studios, Perino’s journey is indeed a blueprint for leading with conviction in challenging times. Her strength lies in her calm demeanor, unwavering professionalism and down-to-earth relatability. She is, at her core, a listener, a learner and a leader who knows the value of grace under pressure.
FROM RANCH ROOTS TO THE WEST WING
Before the cameras, bestselling books and the West Wing, Dana Perino’s story began in the Cowboy State of Wyoming. Born in Evanston and raised in Denver, Colorado, her family’s ranch became a grounding force in her early life. Her grandfather, a Republican county commissioner, was a man of service who would rise before dawn to tend to the cattle, clean up, and don a bolo tie before heading off to public meetings.
“There was something bigger than just yourself,” Perino said, reflecting on those early lessons in civic duty and work ethic. “You were expected to contribute.”
Her father instilled a love of current events and debate in an unconventional way: He asked her to read the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post each day and select two articles to discuss over dinner. These conversations built a foundation for a future defined by clear thinking, articulate speech and public communication.
Perino also credits the calm of her upbringing as essential in shaping the composure she would later be known for in the high-pressure career world.
THE WHITE HOUSE YEARS: PRESSURE, PURPOSE AND PRECISION
Perino’s path to the White House wasn’t conventional, but it was intentional. With a master’s in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois – Springfield and a string of communications roles in Washington, she built a reputation as someone who could be trusted under pressure. That reputation caught the attention of top advisers in the George W. Bush administration, and eventually, she was offered a position in the Office of Communications. She spent more than seven years as part of the administration of President George W. Bush, joining right after the 9/11 attacks as a spokesperson for the Justice Department.
When Tony Snow had to step down due to terminal cancer in 2007, Perino was appointed as the 26th White House press secretary — the second woman and the first Republican woman to hold the role.
The gravity of the moment wasn’t lost on her.
“Tony had such a beautiful way of connecting with people,” Perino recalls. Still, she had to find her own voice — one that was authentic to her, and not a replica of his.
Her voice would soon be tested in some of the most challenging periods of the Bush administration — ongoing military conflicts, economic volatility and deepening political polarization.
“Leadership is a decision-making experience,” Perino explains. “You have to be comfortable making decisions. But to do that, you need to have a set of principles by which you live your life and run your business.”
She found strength in the example of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. One piece of advice from Cheney still echoes in her mind: “You never get in trouble for something you didn’t say.” It’s a discipline that Perino believes more leaders — especially in today’s media-drenched world — should adopt.
She recalls moments of intense scrutiny, such as briefing the press on national security issues or responding to unexpected crises. Her team prepared obsessively. She credits those high-stakes experiences with sharpening her instincts and deepening her empathy.
“People need information, but they also need to trust the messenger,” she says. “I always tried to be honest, direct and calm.”
Perino also reflects on how the role of press secretary has evolved. "I was only the second woman to hold the job," she says, noting the number of women who have followed. "It has changed a lot."
CALM IS A SUPERPOWER
Ask anyone who’s worked with Dana Perino and a common word emerges: “unflappable.” Her calm demeanor wasn’t just a personal trait — it became a leadership tool.
“Nobody will follow you if you’re running around like a chicken with your head cut off,” she jokes, explaining that calm breeds competence.
That lesson was especially relevant in meetings with President Bush. She remembered a moment when a senior staffer struggled to convey a message clearly. Perino quietly stepped in, reframed the message and helped restore clarity to a tense room.
“I’ve always believed that people trusted me to speak on their behalf, and I think I did a good job representing them.” she says.
FINDING A NEW VOICE
Leaving the White House could have marked the end of a storied career, but for Perino, it was just the beginning of Act Two. She transitioned into television, first as a contributor and then as co-host of The Five — a roundtable show that blends analysis with personality and debate.
The leap wasn’t easy.
“I was reluctant to express my own opinion,” she admits. “It felt like walking a high wire without a net.”
Perino had been trained to stay neutral, precise and measured. But TV demanded a more personal approach — something more conversational, even provocative at times. With encouragement from colleagues like Greg Gutfeld and network executives like Suzanne Scott, Perino trusted her instincts and shared her insights.
Scott, who had been head of talent and one of Perino's first bosses, is now CEO. She helped create an environment of support and growth for her team — not just as broadcasters, but as people, Perino explains.
That support helped Perino build a following. She became known as a steadying voice on The Five, one who could hold her ground with intelligence and civility.
“We don’t always agree,” she says of the show’s panel, “but we respect each other. And I think the audience senses that.”
The Five has gone on to win its time slot every day since it started in July 2011 and has been named the fourth mostwatched program in all of cable.
THE ART OF LISTENING AND LEADING WITH VISION
Among all the leadership skills Perino has developed, she ranks listening among the most essential.
“Listening is an undervalued leadership skill,” she notes. “Let people tell their story. Let them make their argument without interrupting. That shows respect — and earns it.”
This belief shows up in her work on America’s Newsroom, where she interviews politicians, business leaders and newsmakers with an open-minded approach.
It’s also a theme in her mentorship of younger journalists and staffers.
Perino frequently invites rising stars to ask questions, seek advice or simply talk about their career paths. It’s part of her mission to foster a leadership pipeline, especially for young women.
In fact, to express her gratitude for the opportunities she’s been afforded, Perino, along with Dee Martin, co-head of the Policy Resolution Group at Bracewell LLP; and Jamie Zuieback,
director of public relations for the U.S. at Latham & Watkins LLP, started Minute Mentoring in 2009. The program for young women is like speed dating between mentors and mentees giving participants, “renewed energy and enthusiasm for their careers and for the value of mentorship.”
RESILIENCE THROUGH EXPERIENCE
Perino believes resilience is the essential quality for modern leadership. But it’s not something you’re born with, she insists — it’s developed through experience.
“This is the most important skill young people learn and coddling them won’t help them develop it,” she says. “I find that the younger generation is actually a bit more resilient after COVID — that could just be at FOX and in my friend group — but, overall, I have great confidence in their approach to accepting life is hard and that taking chances is critical to success.”
She’s optimistic about the next generation and often reminds young professionals of their immense potential: “Being born in America means you already won life’s great lottery. Take advantage of that — don’t waste the opportunity and be grateful and patriotic. It will make your life even better.”
EMBRACING CHANGE
Perino has lived through major career pivots — leaving Capitol Hill for England, government for media and public service for a life on-camera and as a podcaster for Everything Will Be Okay for FOX News Radio.
Her advice to business leaders facing similar inflection points? “I have decided there’s no alternative to embracing change. It is happening whether we like it or not.”
Perino is also quite candid about her own push-pull with modern technology. “The more I learn about AI (artificial intelligence), the more I want to get a hard copy book and go sit in the quiet on my family’s ranch and tune it all out,” she says. “So I try to find a mix of things. I dabble in using ChatGPT, for instance, but I buy hard copy books and resubscribed to the hard copy Wall Street Journal and New York Times.”
For Perino, technology and tradition must co-exist. “We have to protect humanity while we also use the new tech to our mutual advantage, as much as possible.”
Being a fearless leader, she says, means accepting change is coming — and ushering it in responsibly.
TAKING A LEAP OF FAITH
Since leaving the White House, Perino has embraced sharing her career and life advice through her books, often focusing on the positive aspects and the lessons learned even from difficult situations. She is the bestselling author of And the Good News Is…Lessons and Advice from the Bright Side, Let Me Tell You about Jasper … How My Best Friend Became America’s Dog, and Everything Will Be Okay: Life Lessons for Young Women (from a Former Young Woman). Her newest book, I Wish Someone Had Told Me, is rising on the bestseller list.
One of the most powerful — and most talked about — stories in I Wish Someone Had Told Me... comes not from a newsroom or war room, but on a flight in 1997.
That’s when Perino met her future husband, Peter McMahon. Their connection was immediate. But when Perino made the decision to move to England to be with him, many questioned whether she was giving up her career.
“It was the first big leap of faith I ever took,” she says. “And it changed everything.”
In hindsight, the decision didn’t pause her career; it elevated her perspective. It gave her clarity about what she valued and how she wanted to lead.
Perino believes more people need to hear that choosing love doesn’t mean sacrificing ambition.
“Do not pass up the chance to be loved,” she says in her new book.
LEADERSHIP IN PRACTICE
Pressed for her favorite career memory, Perino doesn’t choose a headline moment or viral clip. Instead, she shares a story of humility — and a peanut butter sandwich.
After an event at the Boy Scout Jamboree in Virginia, she sat with President Bush. There, Bush offered her half of his peanut butter and honey sandwich.
“That was when we really started to get to know each other,” she said. “He asked about my family, my background. He cared.”
It reminded her of the human side of leadership — that even the most powerful people are capable of great kindness and connection.
MESSAGE FOR MBA MEMBERS
As she prepares to address The MBA’s 120th Annual Event on October 8 in Erie, Perino says her excitement is rooted in one thing: connection.
“You are all here because you care,” she says of her message for guests. “And I think that’s one of the most important things about leadership. Showing you care.”
In rapidly evolving times, that’s what people are looking for in leaders: not certainty, but sincerity. Not perfection, but presence.
“If your organization knows that you have their best interest in mind, they are likely to be confident in following you,” Perino says. “Times are changing but our values are steadfast. Hold onto your hats! We are in for a wild ride!”

Erie’s Momentum: Your Business Advantage
Welcome to Erie: The ECRDA is transforming key sites across
Erie County.
Erie, Pennsylvania, is surging to life as a thriving hub for business. Anchored by the strength of local companies and energized by incoming ventures, the county offers the modernized infrastructure and financial incentives that help businesses grow, while contributing to Erie’s lasting prosperity.
At the center of this momentum is the Erie County Redevelopment Authority (ECRDA). Over the past decade, the organization has invested more than $100 million into the county’s business ecosystem through the strategic acquisition, development and redevelopment of real estate, all while fueling job creation, business retention and long-term regional growth.
ECRDA also connects both new and established businesses with low-interest financing through programs like the Business Loan Fund, PIDA and USDA loans, and the Diverse Erie Small Business Loan Program. These capital resources support new construction, equipment purchases and more.
Small- and large-sized companies can also access local, state, and federal grants that help them scale efficiently while contributing to the community’s future.
From every angle, Erie’s momentum offers opportunities that local and regional businesses alike can seize to grow and drive lasting impact for the community.
Prime Sites, Ready for Business
ECRDA helps transform key sites across Erie County, providing space where existing businesses can reinvest and grow and new ventures can establish roots. These include:
Savocchio Opportunity Park
Savocchio Opportunity Park is a business park hosting advanced technology agriculture firms. It’s adjacent to Erie’s high-traffic Industrial Corridor, giving companies easy access to other manufacturers, logistics and service companies, as well as a younger-than-average, highly educated workforce. The park also provides convenient access to Route 5, connecting Erie to major locations like Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago and Canada, as well as international rail services. For businesses wanting to join the agriculture revolution, the park is ready with multiple 1.5- to 7-acre lots that bring research and commercial operations together.
Berry Global is building a 90,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution center in Erie’s Little Italy.
ECRDA worked with Berry Global to build a new 90,000-square-foot facility, which has allowed the company to expand its operations in Erie's Little Italy.
Ironworks Square
In the heart of Erie’s historic industrial corridor, Ironworks Square has been meticulously reimagined for today’s commerce. The site is undergoing a massive renovation of approximately 148,000 square feet for common multipurpose conference and event spaces, brewery, commercial business, manufacturing and manicured outdoor space. The site seamlessly blends its industrial roots with contemporary architectural design to salute Erie’s roots and stand as a testament to its rich future. Its proximity to interstates connecting to major regional metros makes Ironworks Square a prime location for business.
McKean Business Park
Primed and ready for business, McKean Business Park is Erie’s first new modern business park in more than 25 years. At 160 acres, it’s also the region’s largest.
The park is fully equipped with critical infrastructure: an on-site power grid, high-capacity transmission lines, and integrated fiber optics. This makes it an ideal fit for energy-intensive businesses like manufacturing companies, data and distribution centers or technology companies. With easy access to Interstate 90 and major water and rail routes, companies here gain a competitive logistical edge.
Plus, with infrastructure, zoning and permitting already in place at the park, businesses can accelerate setup, cut costs and reduce time, getting to market faster and more efficiently.
Erie’s Financial Advantage
Erie’s business sites come with a financial edge, too. ECRDA helps both local businesses and incoming ventures tap into powerful financial incentives that cut expenses while fueling reinvestment into the broader community.
» Erie’s City Revitalization and Improvement Zone (CRIZ) channels a portion of state and local taxes generated within its 130-acre zone back into the area. These funds support infrastructure, new development, business support and job creation initiatives, ensuring that business growth also strengthens the community around it.
» A 10-Year Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance (LERTA) provides graduated property tax relief on new construction and improvements to encourage reinvestment in the City of Erie. For companies investing in new real estate or upgrading existing ones, this incentive can substantially reduce upfront costs and free up capital for growth initiatives.
» Federal and Keystone Opportunity Zones provide tax benefits to investors who support development in designated low-income or distressed areas in Erie, aligning long-term business investment with community revitalization.
Additionally, each property may qualify for its own package of low-interest ECRDA loans, state-backed grants, tax credits and more, creating a highly supportive financial environment.
Together, these programs make Erie a place where businesses can reinvest, expand, or establish new operations while building a flourishing community.
Unlock Erie’s Business Advantage
With ECRDA’s guidance, businesses gain access to ready-to-go sites, modern infrastructure and strategic financial incentives designed to accelerate growth while strengthening the community. From reimagined industrial spaces to new business parks and waterfront opportunities, each project is built to generate immediate impact for both business and the region.
Connect with ECRDA today to explore sites and incentives that help your business — and the community — thrive.

Manufacturer & Business Association
Celebrating 120 Years of Moving Business Forward
The MBA has empowered Pennsylvania employers since 1905 — advancing business success through expert guidance, operational excellence, and a commitment to free enterprise. Today, The MBA is one of the largest regional associations of its kind in the nation, providing training, human resources, insurance and legislative services to its more than 2,000 manufacturing and nonmanufacturing members.
For 120 years, The MBA has been a constant presence in the story of our region’s economy. From its earliest days, the Association has stood beside employers, helping them solve problems, overcome challenges and seize opportunities to grow. While the world of business has transformed in ways that the founders could never have imagined, the Association’s mission and vision: to create and deliver services and expertise that help businesses solve problems and succeed, and to see these business thrive within the free market system.
The MBA’s roots stretch back to 1905, when Erie’s manufacturers found themselves fighting for survival against legislation that threatened to tax every manufacturing concern to pay for a new state Capitol. Through a flurry of telegraphs, phone calls and letters, they successfully pushed back, realizing just how powerful their collective voice could be. Not long after, the same group funded firehouses in Erie when the city lacked resources, only to be denied a place on the Fire Commission. That refusal was the spark.
On November 6, 1905, 61 manufacturers came together to form the Manufacturers’ Association of Erie, determined to create an organization where business voices would be heard.
The spirit of collaboration was clear from the very first Annual Dinner (now the Annual Event), held on a winter evening in January 1906. More than 150 leaders gathered at the Reed House downtown, where treasurer E.C. Moore of Erie City Iron Works set the tone. Erie, he said, was “essentially a manufacturing town,” and the Association’s future would depend on the effort and commitment of every member. It was a vision rooted in responsibility not only to industry, but to the broader community.
As the decades unfolded, the Association became a vital player in local and national affairs. Under the leadership of Executive Secretary Dana E. Jones from 1916 to 1952, it promoted the American enterprise system, helped coordinate wartime production in both World Wars, and even supplied ambulances for local hospitals. By the end of World War II, an astounding 93 percent of Erie’s manufacturers were contributing to the war effort — proof of how deeply industry and community were intertwined.
The post-war years brought new priorities. With the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the 1950s, Erie grew into a major port, and the Association adapted alongside it. Under President Howard Kelly, the group began offering health and safety programs, including insurance benefits that quickly became a cornerstone of membership. By the time Ray Weber took over as executive director in 1971, the Association became the biggest client or policyholder of Blue Cross of Western Pa. and was playing a bigger role on state and national stages, working with groups like the National Association of Manufacturers to represent employer concerns.
MBA ICONS OF INDUSTRY
In celebration of its 120th year, The MBA is recognizing leaders of longtime member organizations who have contributed to the Association’s longevity, the regional business community as well as their operations and industries in a special series in The MBA Business Magazine.
These ICONS of Industry are wellrespected leaders and inspire the next generation of leaders to carry that legacy forward.

James Rutkowski Sr. — founder of Industrial Sales & Manufacturing in Millcreek Township, PA
Jana Goodrich — chief executive officer of Seaway Manufacturing Corporation in Erie, PA
James “Jim” Ohrn — Board member and secretarytreasurer for Custom Group Industries in Erie, PA
The challenges of the 1970s were familiar ones: inflation, shifting labor demands and a shortage of skilled workers. In response, the Association helped establish the regional skill center at Erie Vo-Tech and created the Golden Watch Award in 1972, later renamed for Patrick R. Locco, to honor technical students and emphasize the value of vocational careers. This period also saw the launch of programs like ACES (Americans for the Competitive Enterprise System) and Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week, designed to give students hands-on experience with the free-enterprise system. Educational initiatives flourished, from “High-Q” on WQLN to partnerships with SCORE to support new business ventures. By the time Weber retired, membership had grown from 500 to more than 3,500, cementing the Association’s place as a regional force.
The 1980s brought another transformation. With demand for training and professional development surging, the Association expanded its programs and officially rebranded as the Manufacturers’ Association of Northwest Pennsylvania. Under Claudia Haller, who became executive director in 1987, communication with members took center

stage. The monthly bulletin evolved into The MBA Business Magazine, while the Annual Dinner began drawing national figures like George Will, Robert Bork and Jeane Kirkpatrick. The Association, which located to 3537 West 12th Street, had truly become the voice of business in the region — the place media, lawmakers and the public turned to when business issues arose.
By the 1990s, the focus was on valueadded services. Ralph Pontillo, who became executive director in 1990 (and passed away in 2019), pushed the Association into a new era of growth. Membership exploded past 6,500, prompting the move to its current headquarters and Conference Center on West 38th Street in 1996. The MBA became the nation’s largest regional manufacturers’ association and the first U.S. trade association to achieve ISO 9001 compliance. The Annual Event began to attract speakers of global influence, from Presidents George H.W. and George W. Bush to Colin Powell, Rudy Giuliani, and Tom Ridge.
most impactful programs: Manufacturing Day (MFG Day). What began with a film screening at the Association’s Conference Center on West 38th Street grew into a dynamic event at the Bayfront Convention Center that now brings together more than 2,000 students, educators and business leaders each year to explore modern manufacturing careers.
Expansion reached Pittsburgh in 2019, when the Association merged with the SMC Business Councils, adding 400 new members and strengthening services in western Pennsylvania. Even through leadership transitions — following Pontillo’s retirement in 2017 and the sudden passing of John Krahe in 2022 — the Association remained steadfast.

Innovation wasn’t just about policy and programming — it was also about community. In 2005, the Association’s centennial celebration featured the American Manufacturing Tribute Bike, designed with parts made by local members and unveiled by Peter Fonda at the Warner Theatre. Two years later, the Association launched Roar on the Shore®, a summer motorcycle rally that combined business, tourism and philanthropy in a way the city had never seen. The event drew over 100,000 visitors annually, pumped nearly $25 million into the local economy, and raised more than $1 million for charities before concluding in 2019.
Change continued to shape the Association in the 2000s. In 2008, it became the Manufacturer & Business Association, a name that better reflected its broader membership. Growth accelerated again in 2009 with the acquisition of the Manufacturers’ Association of Central Pennsylvania, expanding The MBA’s reach with new offices in Harrisburg and Williamsport. And in 2014, the Association launched what has since become one of its
Today, under the leadership of President and CEO Lori Joint, the Association continues to evolve. Joint, who began as an MBA intern in 1990 and rose through nearly every department, now oversees a staff of nearly 30 across Erie and Cranberry Township. The MBA’s programs and services are rooted in both demand and innovation: delivering HR and legal expertise, training, insurance programs, energy solutions, logistics support and networking opportunities that help businesses of all sizes succeed.
In 2025, the Association embraced a new identity once again, rebranding simply as The MBA with a fresh logo, website and member database designed for a modern era. Its membership now spans 54 counties and seven states, from companies with two employees to global employers with thousands.
“While ‘manufacturer’ is in our name, it’s an ode to our history and not a prerequisite to being a member,” says Joint. “We are dedicated to creating and delivering services and expertise that help businesses solve problems and succeed.”
Now, 120 years after Erie’s manufacturers first came together to make their voices heard, The MBA continues to do what it was founded to do: stand with businesses, amplify their voices, and build a future where employers and communities thrive together.

When Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) returns to Erie’s Bayfront Convention Center on October 8, it won’t just be another annual event — it will mark 12 years of sparking education and interest in manufacturing careers for the region’s students, educators and business community. What started as a small effort to open doors to manufacturing careers has grown into a regionally recognized celebration that continues to shape the future workforce in northwestern Pennsylvania.
MFG Day 2025: A Bright Spark for Students, Educators and
Business Community
A NATIONAL MOVEMENT WITH LOCAL IMPACT
MFG Day was launched in 2012 by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association and grew with partners like the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and Manufacturing Institute, and has since been embraced across the country as a way to dispel outdated perceptions of manufacturing and need for highly skilled talent.
NWPA’s MFG Day celebration began in 2014 with a movie for area students at The MBA Conference Center in Erie. The MBA and its partners — the NWPA Chapter of the National Tooling & Machining Association (NTMA), Career Street, Harbor Creek School District, and Crawford County K-12 Career Education Alliance — along with major sponsor AirBorn, Inc. and dozens of other sponsors have since embraced the mission wholeheartedly, building one of the strongest regional MFG Day programs in the nation at the Bayfront Convention Center. Thousands of students, educators and community members have taken part over the years, seeing first-hand the opportunities that exist in their own backyard.
“We are extremely proud of what we continue to achieve through MFG Day,” says MBA President and CEO Lori Joint. “This event is a critical connection, bridging education and industry. We are grateful to our main event sponsor AirBorn, Inc., partners and supporters for making it happen year after year.”
OPENING EYES TO CAREER PATHWAYS
On MFG Day 2025, more than 2,000 students and educators from area schools will meet employers from area manufacturers and support industries and experience what it means to build, design and innovate. From advanced machining to plastics production, welding to robotics, the organizations are eager to show these students the critical role they play in the economy — and the fulfilling careers that can come from choosing this path.
As Buckley Cook, Ph.D., superintendent of Harbor Creek School District, a longtime partner of MFG Day, explains, “I believe that one of the most unfair questions we ask students is, ‘What do you want to do with the rest of your life?’ So, this day helps students answer that question by either sparking an interest or taking something off of their list.
“In a world where college is not for everybody, but some sort of post-secondary education is, it is the responsibility of the school districts to expose students to what is out there in the way of career options and what it takes to get there,” Cook adds. “This opportunity allows students to explore various roles, from machinists and welders to engineers and technicians working with robotics and automation. They learn about the different skills and educational requirements for these jobs, whether it's an apprenticeship, a two-year technical degree or a four-year college degree.”
Amy Godwin, program coordinator of the Crawford County K–12 Career Education
Alliance Program, another MFG Day partner, calls the event a “one-stop-shop” with more than 60 area companies represented. “It's a great opportunity to take advantage of so many manufacturers together in one place.”
FILLING A SKILLS GAP
Like many regions across the United States, NWPA faces a workforce challenge. As experienced employees retire, there is a pressing need to attract and train the next generation. Events like MFG Day are essential for building that pipeline. By sparking interest early, students are encouraged to pursue technical training, apprenticeships and higher education programs aligned with manufacturing careers.
Educators note that students return to the classroom more engaged, asking deeper questions and seeking out opportunities they didn’t previously know existed.
“I believe it gives students a firsthand look at potential career paths they may not have considered otherwise,” says Cook. “This direct exposure can make their education more meaningful by connecting classroom subjects like math and science to real-world applications. A career experience like this provides a direct link to local employers, creating valuable networking opportunities. The event is also a chance for teachers and counselors to get a more accurate and modern view of the manufacturing industry. This allows them to better advise students and integrate relevant skills into their curriculum, making their teaching more effective and relevant to students' future careers.“
A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT
The success of MFG Day in Erie is due to collaboration among manufacturers, schools, workforce development agencies and community partners. Each group plays an important role — ensuring that students are introduced to a wide variety of roles.
According to Jennifer Nygaard Pontzer, director of partner Career Street, MFG Day brings together industry leaders under one roof to showcase the products, innovations, and processes that set them apart. Middle and high school students and their educators from the across Erie County, the city and beyond have the unique opportunity to connect directly with the owners, makers and business representatives who drive our region’s manufacturing success.
“The atmosphere is electric — manufacturers are eager to share their stories, and students are equally eager to learn. Beyond the vibrant showroom floor, breakout sessions on STEM-related topics offer exceptional, hands-on learning experiences,” she says. “By the end of the day, both students and educators walk away with a deeper understanding of the vital role manufacturing plays in our community — and a clearer picture of the exciting career paths this industry offers.”
Tami Adams, executive director of the NWPA Chapter of the National Tooling & Machining Association, describes MFG Day as an “interactive experience where students can ask questions, learn about career pathways and explore the skills needed in today’s manufacturing world.”
One of Adams’ personal favorite aspects is the time spent on breakout sessions. NWPA NTMA’s team
works diligently to design sessions that give students a deeper understanding of manufacturing careers and technologies. They spotlight high-interest areas such as industrial robotics, drone applications, 3D printing and the always-popular STEM Playground — featuring interactive, handson activities — which consistently spark curiosity and excitement.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2025
As MFG Day 2025 approaches, excitement is building. Students will once again learn about employers whose ideas are turned into products, and where curiosity can ignite a career. Manufacturers and partner organizations are preparing interactive demonstrations, hands-on challenges with prizes, and inspiring stories to share. Educators are preparing students with background lessons to maximize the impact of what they’ll see.
“In 2025, I’m especially excited about the STEM Challenges, which will offer students small-group, hands-on activities that encourage creativity, problem-solving and teamwork,” says Adams. “Additionally, a group of NTMA member companies — longtime MFG Day exhibitors — have been collaborating to design more interactive and engaging booth experiences. Their goal is to create activities that directly connect to the skills and technologies used in the trade, capturing student interest in new and exciting ways. I can’t wait to see their creative ideas come to life on event day!”
Most importantly, MFG Day continues to build bridges between generations — connecting seasoned professionals with young minds eager to explore, learn and imagine themselves in these roles.
“There’s nothing like seeing students fully engaged with local manufacturers — ▶
More than 2,000 students, educators and representatives of the business community will attend this year's MFG Day event.
Major sponsor AirBorn is one of the must-see exhibits at MFG Day.

Message from the Immediate Past Chairman
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your 2024-2025 chairman of The MBA, especially as we mark the Association’s 120th anniversary! This isn’t just a milestone; it’s the kind of milestone that deserves both reflection and celebration. Anniversaries like this are more than just numbers — they strengthen our identity and remind us how far we’ve come together.
First, I’d like to congratulate my good friend Matt Clark of Humes Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM on his appointment to chairman of the Board of Governors — if there’s anyone ready to steer this association into its next exciting chapter, it’s him. I’d also like to recognize our Executive Committee and MBA President and CEO Lori Joint for their guidance and steady leadership. It’s also been a pleasure to welcome Andy Renkey of Harmony Castings in Harmony, Pennsylvania — his fresh perspective adds real momentum to the Board.
This year brings a new generation of leadership as well. Our brand-new Next Gen Advisory Board is full of new voices to help guide the Association forward. This next generation of area business leaders brings fresh thinking, digital smarts, and real-world perspective into the mix, and will be critical to helping The MBA stay relevant and agile.
To all our members, you’re the spark that keeps us going. We would not be here without you. And to our phenomenal staff — your behind-the-scenes support has kept The MBA running smoothly, especially during such a momentous year.
Know that I’m excited for what’s next, and I can't wait to keep supporting The MBA’s journey forward. Here’s to 120 amazing years, and to the bright, bold future ahead!
Sincerely,
Bob Frost, Outgoing Chairman of The MBA Board of Governors
New Board Member

During the next 15 years, Renkey served in various management positions of increasing responsibility in Fortune 500 manufacturing industries across the United States and Canada. In 2011, Renkey shifted from working in large manufacturing organizations to operational and then general management with a smaller, privately owned manufacturing organization known as Ligon Industries.

LEADING THE FUTURE OF LEADERSHIP TRAINING
What’s New and What’s Next at The MBA
While 120th Annual Event keynote speaker Dana Perino is inspiring guests with her leadership lessons at the Bayfront Convention Center on October 8, the Association also wants to share what’s new and exciting in its own training world.
Over the past year, the Association’s Training team has been busy redesigning and updating its leadership programs to better serve leaders at every stage of their journey. The MBA’s flagship programs, formerly known as the Leadership for Team Leaders Series and the Supervisory Skills Series, have been completely reimagined and relaunched as Leadership Launchpad and Strategic Leadership & Supervision to better meet the needs of today’s leaders.
Leadership Launchpad is designed for emerging leaders ready to build confidence and practical skills over five interactive days. Participants explore teamwork, communication and creating a positive workplace culture through hands-on activities and real-life examples. The program focuses on translating learning into action, ensuring leaders return to their teams ready to make an immediate impact.
For those already leading teams, Strategic Leadership & Supervision takes a deeper dive into the “big picture” side of leadership — strategic thinking, making tough decisions and leading through change. This program is designed for supervisors who are ready to level
up and influence not just their teams, but also their organizations as a whole.
The MBA’s new Training Track System connects all of its offerings into a cohesive growth pathway. It centers on two flagship programs: Leadership Launchpad for front-line, mid-level and crew leaders, and Strategic Leadership & Supervision for experienced supervisors. In addition, the Association has developed foundational and executive tracks to support leadership growth at every level — from new hires with leadership potential to seasoned executives seeking fresh perspectives.
“We have blended the best adult learning methods with modern technology to make training flexible, engaging and results-driven,” says Tracy Daggett, PHR, director of Training and Development at The MBA. “That means shorter learning curves, stronger skill retention and greater on-thejob application.”

stages. This library will feature short, highimpact videos covering essential leadership skills, practical workplace strategies and timely topics. Whether an organization wants a quick refresher on feedback techniques, tips for handling conflict or guidance on motivating their team, they’ll be able to access it anytime, anywhere.
“We are continually adding new content, so we encourage you to check back regularly for updates,” notes The MBA’s Training and Technology Strategy Manager Casey Naylon. “Our goal is to make leadership development more accessible, allowing you to learn and grow in ways that fit your schedule — whether you’re between meetings, traveling or simply prefer selfpaced learning.”
The MBA believes leadership development isn’t just a response to change — it’s a way to stay ahead of it. As industries evolve and workplace expectations shift, leaders who invest in their own growth position themselves and their teams for long-term success. That’s why The MBA is committed to being the region’s trusted partner in helping leaders adapt, excel and lead with confidence.

Message from Our CEO: The
MBA Marks Major Milestone in Support and Service
This year, The MBA proudly celebrates 120 years of service to members across the tri-state region. This milestone is more than a marker of time — it reflects the trust and dedication of more than 2,000 member employers who continue to rely on The MBA’s professional staff to provide the resources, training and support they need to succeed.
Lori Joint is the president and CEO of The MBA. Contact her at 814/833-3200, 800/815-2660 or ljoint@mbausa.org.
Since our founding in 1905 in Erie, the Association has stood alongside businesses through good times and challenging ones. What began as a way to support manufacturers for much-needed fire protection has grown into a vital organization serving companies of all sizes and industries — manufacturing, health care, education, professional services, nonprofit organizations and more.
One of The MBA’s greatest strengths is how it helps businesses navigate change. Whether facing workplace regulations, shifting economic conditions or demands for a well-trained workforce, our members know they don’t have to go it alone.
At The MBA, our Computer Training and Professional Development teams provide hands-on, practical training programs that help workers develop skills, meet safety requirements and grow into leadership roles. Our Human Resource and Legal Services teams are trusted by members to provide real-time guidance on hiring practices, employee relations, compliance and everyday workplace issues.
Beyond that, we continue to provide employee benefit, insurance and energy solutions designed with employers in mind — cost-effective, easy to manage and tailored to fit a wide range of needs. WHERE STRATEGY MEETS ACTION
SEVEN NOMINEES REPRESENT THE BEST OF WHAT HUMAN RESOURCES CAN BE
Behind every successful company are people who bring skills, ideas and dedication to work each day. And at the heart of building and supporting these employees are Human Resources (HR) professionals. Their leadership helps businesses grow stronger while creating workplaces where people can thrive.
That’s why The MBA’s HR Person of the Year Award in 2025 is such a prestigious honor. This year, seven outstanding nominees are being recognized for the ways they’ve exceled in leadership, workplace culture and the HR profession.
• Penny Bebko – Erie Homes for Children and Adults
• Tiffany Christie – Federal Resources Corporation
• Theresa Croll – PennWest University
• Diane Lyons – Millcreek Township
• Heather Evans – Port Erie Plastics
• Kathyrn Schaaf – Industrial Sales & Manufacturing, Inc.
• Steve Seymour – Country Fair
“Each of these leaders represents the best of what HR can be — thoughtful, innovative, and committed to people,” explains MBA Vice President and Employment Counsel Tammy Toman, JD, PHR, SHRM-CP. “We are proud to celebrate their accomplishments and impact on the HR profession, their employers and teams.”
For instance, Penny Bebko of EHCA leads the recruiting and training team that has restored EHCA’s staffing levels to pre-pandemic numbers for the first time in over five years. As nominator Jonathan Rilling says, “She proudly represents EHCA as the 28th largest employer in Erie County. Penny is a highly energetic, positive and valued confidant to the senior team here at EHCA.”
A Celebration of HR Leadership
Nominators Sean Connole and Mark Hedlund Jr. are equally impressed by the impact that Heather Evans has made on Port Erie Plastics. “Heather always has a positive attitude, and her enthusiasm is contagious. She is also very selfless,” according to the nominators. “She will do everything in her power to help someone in need no matter the circumstance. She is great at networking for a good cause, and employees from other companies always have great things to say about her character.”
LEADING CHANGE AND SUPPORTING PEOPLE
In today’s workplaces, HR is about much more than handling hiring or payroll. Human resources professionals are indeed leading conversations about work-life balance, employee well-being, and how companies adapt to new technologies like artificial intelligence. They’re also shaping workplace culture in ways that directly affect whether people choose to join — and stay with — a company.
For example, nominator Ben Schlipf shared this about Theresa Croll of PennWest University, “Theresa’s career is marked by tangible results and institutional improvements. As the chief human resources officer at PennWest, she leads the Office of Human Resources with a vision to attract, support and retain top talent. Her strategic focus on employee engagement and empowerment supports university-wide goals of excellence and retention.”
Tiffany Christie of Federal Resources is also someone who is positively impacting the organization. According to nominator Jeremy Young, “At Federal Resources, Tiffany has been instrumental in aligning HR practices with the company’s strategic vision, contributing to measurable improvements in talent retention and organizational cohesion. Her work has supported the company's recognition as a values-based employer
committed to professional growth and inclusive leadership.
“Tiffany’s role has expanded in tandem with FRC’s evolution into a leading government technology partner, underscoring her impact on scaling HR systems to meet high-stakes operational goals,” he adds. “Her achievements speak not only to technical proficiency but also to her deep commitment to fostering a resilient and high-performing workplace culture.”
THE HUMAN SIDE OF BUSINESS Technology may be advancing, but human connection remains at the core of every business. HR professionals are the ones making sure that connection stays strong. They mentor, they listen, they encourage — and they ensure employees know they matter.
This year’s nominees embody that commitment. Whether it’s through innovative training programs, creative benefits offerings or simply being a trusted voice in the workplace, each nominee has made a lasting impact.
According to nominator Kim Clear, the most transformative work of Diane Lyons of Millcreek Township is “fostering positive employee morale and engagement.”
Lyons is an active member of Together Empowering Employees (T.E.E.M.) in Millcreek, a group of township directors and leaders dedicated to increasing morale there. “The positive change that has occurred amongst Millcreek Township employees is felt in all areas,” notes Clear. “Without Diane, none of this would have been possible.”
As nominator Danielle Miklovic said about Kathryn Schaaf at ISM, “Kathryn consistently goes above and beyond to create an inclusive and engaging work environment. She has implemented a variety of thoughtful initiatives, teambuilding activities, employee appreciation programs and other opportunities for staff to connect and feel recognized.
Celebration Leadership
These efforts have brought people closer together and strengthened our sense of unity and teamwork.”
Another HR professional making such an impact is two-time MBA Person of the Year nominee Steve Seymour of Country Fair. Nominator Christine Monaghan, who was the 2024 MBA HR Person of the Year Award winner, says of Seymour: “Steve is not only a respected HR leader among peers, but also a mentor, educator and culture champion who continuously inspires those around him.”
WHY RECOGNITION MATTERS
Much of HR’s work happens behind the scenes. Employees may not always see the hours spent solving problems, developing policies or guiding managers through challenges, but they feel the results every day. That’s why investing in ongoing professional development at such events as The MBA’s annual HR Conference and honoring HR leaders is so meaningful.
“When we celebrate these seven nominees, we recognize not only their individual dedication but also the broader role HR plays in building healthy, successful businesses,” says Toman. “Their leadership reminds us that HR isn’t just about processes — it’s about people.”
“This year’s nominees set the standard for leadership, compassion and vision,” she continues. “By honoring them, we honor the idea that when HR is strong, businesses and communities thrive.”

The MBA Remembers Three Pillars of the NWPA Business Community
The northwest Pennsylvania business community lost three influential figures over the past year — James McKibben, David Kozak, Ph.D. and Edward “Ed” Charles Dalglish — who made significant contributions in their respective fields and to the local community.
“Their dedication to their professions and their commitment to service earned them the respect and admiration of many,” said MBA President and CEO Lori Joint. “Their legacies continue to inspire those who knew them, and their impact will not be forgotten.”
James McKibben, the founding partner of Lillis, McKibben, Bongiovanni and Company, passed away on November 28, 2024, at the age of 84, after battling dementia. A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, McKibben’s life was defined by his professional achievements and his dedication to Erie’s community.
After graduating from Culver Military Academy and the University of Colorado, McKibben began his career in insurance sales. He earned the CLU designation and went on to become a respected estate planner, life insurance broker, and expert in employee benefits. His business journey culminated in the founding of Lillis, McKibben, Bongiovanni and Company, a firm that has served the Erie area for many years.
“Jim’s business life can be described by all as one of dedication, commitment and scrupulous integrity,” said John Bongiovanni, his longtime business partner. “Jim was a great mentor and partner and is missed by our entire LMB team and his clients."
Beyond his professional accomplishments, McKibben was also deeply involved in several local charitable organizations. He served as past president and board member of the Erie Arts Council and was a tireless advocate for the Greater Erie Charity Golf Classic. His leadership at the Sarah Reed Children’s Center, where he was a long-term board member and former chairman, was especially notable. In 2023, he was honored with the Sarah Reed Legacy Award, recognized for his generosity and compassion. McKibben’s legacy extends beyond his business and philanthropic work. He also was an accomplished golfer, holding club championship titles at Lakeview Country Club and The Kahkwa Club, as well as winning the 1997 EDGA J.C. Martin Senior Championship.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda Mong McKibben, his children, grandchildren and many friends.
David Kozak, Ph.D., a professor at Gannon University and political analyst, passed away on March 9, 2025, at the age of 80 after a lengthy illness. A native of Lackawanna, New York, Kozak spent much of his life teaching, researching and contributing to political discussions.
Kozak’s career as an educator began after he completed his undergraduate studies at Gannon University and went on to earn a Ph.D. in political science and public policy from the University of Pittsburgh. He served for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, teaching at the U.S. Air Force Academy and the National War College before returning to Gannon University. At Gannon, he taught both undergraduate and graduate students, specializing in political science and leadership.
For 25 years, Kozak was a lecturer at the Chautauqua Institution, where he inspired many with his unique approach to teaching. He also directed Leadership Erie and taught at West Point during a sabbatical. In his role as a political analyst, he was a regular presenter at The MBA legislative briefings and often contributed to local and national media outlets, sharing his expertise on political issues.
"Dr. David Kozak will always be a cherished member of the Gannon University family,” says Walter Iwanenko, Ph.D., president of Gannon University. “His impact on our students and the broader community is immeasurable. His legacy is one of leadership, scholarship and service that will continue to inspire for generations to come.”
Kozak was known for his ability to connect with students, offering them opportunities to engage with political leaders and participate in unique experiences, such as attending presidential conventions. His research focused on bipartisan
collaboration, and he encouraged his students to approach political science as “a dispassionate search for the truth,” valuing civility and civic engagement above all else.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, MaryAnne Mandeville, their children, grandchildren and many friends.
Edward “Ed” Charles Dalglish of Harborcreek passed away on August 15, 2025. He was 90 years old.
A 1953 graduate of Lawrence Park High School, he went on to attend Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, PA, majoring in chemistry with a minor in mathematics. He was the quarterback of the football team, a four-year letterman, and a distinguished ROTC military graduate.
Following his commissioning, Dalglish served his country as an officer in the U.S. Army, including time in the National Security Agency.
According to his obituary, Dalglish’s professional career was marked by “leadership, strategic planning and service.” In 1960, he began his 30-year tenure at Lord Corporation as an application chemist, rising to general manager and
ultimately vice president. He then joined Hamot Medical Center as vice president until his retirement in 1995.
Dalglish served on The MBA’s Board of Governors from 19821988. His community involvement also included serving as president of the Robert Burns Scottish Club, a member of Perry Keystone Lodge #392 F&AM, a longtime member of the Lawrence Park Golf Club, the Erie Children’s Museum, the Second Harvest Food Bank, the Hamot Health Foundation, and the Harbor Creek School District.
“Serving as a Board member of the Manufacturer & Business Association in Erie, PA was both an honor and a privilege," said Mark Dalglish, one of Ed's sons. "In my father's role as vice president of Lord Corporation, he was proud to contribute to strengthening and advocating for our region’s employers while supporting the growth, innovation and resilience of the northwest Pennsylvania business community.”
Dalglish was preceded in death by his wife Sally and son John Scott. In addition to his son Mark, he is survived by his children Geoffrey and Gregory, grandchildren, family and friends.
“Jim, Dave and Ed were great friends and supporters of The MBA and will be deeply missed,” Joint adds. “Their work and dedication have left a lasting legacy in northwest Pennsylvania, one that will be felt for years to come.”
