中 国 美 術 に お い て、 明 初 と い わ れ て 想 起 さ れ る の は 、 洪 武 ・ 永 楽 ・ せんとく

宣 徳 の 三 皇 帝 の 治 世 で し ょう 。 文化的な面からみれば、洪武は元時代の気風を受け継いだ力強さと 雄々しさがあり、続く永楽はそこに新時代らしいしなやかさと西域の 雅美が加わり、宣徳はそれらの集大成ともいえる完成度を誇り、精妙 さ に お い て は 屹 立 し て い ます 。 せいとう

宣徳年間の後の正統・景泰・天順においては、宣徳期の作風が引継 がれていく傾向にあるので、美術史的には明初に区分されると考えら めい

れます。しかし、遺存例が少なく、その殆どに銘が記されていないな どの理由から、概要を把握するのは困難です。唯一、銘の刻まれたも どうたいしっぽう

の で は 、 景 泰 年 間 に 焼 造 され た 銅 胎 七 宝 の 作 品 が 著 名 で す 。 本展においては、それぞれの時期を象徴する要素を多く含んだ作品 を出展するよう心掛けました。 明代漆器の最高峰と目される洪武期、イスラム産コバルトをふんだ んに使い異国情緒あふれる青花磁器を生み出した永楽期、官作として の規範が整備され高度な爛熟をむかえる宣徳期、そして銅胎七宝の金 字塔を打ち立てた景泰期。 それぞれの皇帝の治世にそれぞれに個性があり、格別な魅力があり ます。 出展点数としては十点ほどですが、内容に関しては最善を尽くしま したので、是非とも会場に足をお運び頂き、明初の栄華を感じ取って 頂ければ幸いです。 繭山龍泉堂

Preface

In the world of Chinese art, the early Ming dynasty refers to the reigns of

three emperors, Hongwu, Yongle and Xuande.

In terms of cultural traits, Hongwu era arts continued the mood of the Yuan

dynasty with its powerful, stalwart air. Next, the Yongle era took on the sense of a new age with the addition of Central Asian refined beauty. The Xuande era's grand compilation of all those factors reached a pinnacle of exquisite perfection.

After Xuande, the succeeding Zhengtong, Jingtai and Tianshun eras continued

the Xuande era style, and are thus within the scope of the early Ming term. And yet the dearth of relevant extant works, most of which are unmarked, makes an overview of these periods hard to grasp. One exception is a Jingtai era copper body cloisonnĂŠ work renowned as the sole extant example with an incised imperial mark.

This exhibition is our attempt to fully convey the aesthetic elements that have

come to symbolize each of these periods.

The Hongwu era which stands as the peak of Ming lacquerware. The Yongle

with its blue and white porcelains made with Islamic realm-sourced cobalt and redolent with a sense of the foreign. The Xuande with its fully codified standards for imperial court-use works that seem to be heading towards over maturation. Then the Jingtai era, whose copper-ground cloisonnĂŠ represented a monumental achievement in that medium.

Each of the reigns of these emperors has their own individual nature, their

own distinctive fascination.

While only ten works are included here, we hope that you will enjoy visiting

the gallery to experience the splendor of these superb early Ming artworks.

永楽堆朱における双銘 永楽期の堆朱の中には、続く宣徳年間において、線彫りの「大明永楽年製」銘を塗 り消して、上から「大明宣徳年製」銘を彫り込み、その文字を金泥で着色した作品が 散見される。蒐集家のあいだからは、永楽帝の治世に続き宣徳帝の治世においても宮 中で用いられたという点でよろこばれ、人気も高い。

Double Imperial Marks on Yongle Carved Red Lacquer Some extant Yongle era carved red lacquer works had their incised line “ 大 明永楽年製 Da Ming Yongle Nian Zhi” imperial marks painted over and then recarved with “ 大明宣徳年製 Da Ming Xuande Nian Zhi” marks, with the lettering painted with gold paint. Works with these double marks are popular among collectors as they indicate the works were used in the imperial courts of both emperor Yongle and his successor, emperor Xuande.

はじめに しゅげんしょう

明時代は、モンゴル王朝に勝利して、朱元璋が洪武元年（1368）に洪武帝と して即位したことに始まり、およそ 300 年中国に君臨することになる。この けいとく

300 年を通じて、またその後の清朝においても、中国陶磁史は、おおむね景徳 ちん

鎮の歴史で語られることになる。それは、明時代にはいり、宮廷の需要を一身 に担う「官窯」が景徳鎮に設置されたことが大きな要因とみなすべきであろう。 景徳鎮官窯の設置によって、ここに様ざまな技術が集約されることとなり、そ の技術を基礎として豊かな創造性が発揮され、次つぎと優れた作品が焼造され た。翻って、こうした景徳鎮の繁栄が、その他の窯場の衰退を生みだしたとみ ることもできよう。 その明時代の景徳鎮の発展の礎を築いた時期が、明時代初期のことであった。 その明時代初期とは、洪武年間から永楽・宣徳年間の時期を指す。とくに景徳 鎮官窯を中心に考えたとき、宣徳年間の後の正統・景泰・天順の三朝において は、官窯の指標とされる「官窯銘」を記した作品がなく、遺品が明確でないこ ともあり、今のところ宣徳期をひとつの区切りと考えざるを得ないのである。 しかしこの三朝においても、史書にはわずかながらではあるものの官窯の焼造 の記録があり、そして近年、景徳鎮での発掘調査によって、正統から天順期に かけての遺構が発掘、整理されているようで、その間の事情も次第に明らかに けいたいらん

されてゆくのであろう。しかしながら、景泰年間では「景泰藍」と呼ばれる銅 胎七宝の作品が好んで作られたようで、そうした作品のなかには「大明景泰年 製」という宮廷用器としての銘が表わされている例がある。ところが、陶磁器 には官窯銘が記された作品が作られることはなかった。これがこの時期の不可 思議なところである。

景徳鎮の官窯 ここでいう「官窯」とは、宮廷の需要を専らに担う常設の専業窯のことをいう。 その「官窯」についての早期の例として、文献に記され、実際に窯址が確認 され、発掘調査が行なわれているのが、南宋時代に浙江省杭州に設置された「南 しゅうないし

こうだんか

宋官窯」である。南宋官窯は、文献の記述通り、修内司官窯と郊壇下官窯の二 か所が確認、発掘されている。両者の差異はまだ不明な点が残るが、今のとこ ろこの二か所が明確に「官窯」と称せるものの初源といえよう。 元時代になると、朝廷に直属する機関として「異様百色造作の成造を掌った」 しょうさくいん

ふりょうじきょく

という「将作院」が設置され、その下に属する事業局のなかに「浮梁磁局」が じょうしゅうふ

置かれている。景徳鎮は饒州府浮梁県にあり、その「磁局」が管理する窯場は 景徳鎮であろう。浮梁磁局は至元 15 年（1278）に設置されたという。しかし この「磁局」は漆工品の製造も掌っていたもので、さらに景徳鎮における調査 そうかくごそう

によって、皇帝のみが使用できる「双角五爪」の龍文様の作品が、景徳鎮市街 しゅざん

らくばきょう

こでん

の珠山地区や落馬橋窯址、近郊の湖田窯などで焼造されていたことが判明した ことから、この「浮梁磁局」も宮廷直属の専業窯とは異なり、各種の製造の管 理、差配を行なっていた組織と考えられる。 明時代になって、景徳鎮に「官窯」が設置される。その設置年代は洪武 2 年 （1369）説、宣徳元年（1426）説などがあり、それぞれ史志などに基づいた考 究であるがいまだ定説をみない。ただ明を建国した洪武帝・朱元璋は、元の至 正 21 年（1361）には景徳鎮を支配下に収めていたといわれ、「浮梁磁局」の制 度を踏襲した可能性もある。その点を考慮して、従来、明の専業工房である「官 ぎょきしょう

「御 窯」を「御器廠」と称していたが、明時代初期ではその両者は別の組織で、 器廠」は「浮梁磁局」のような監督官庁であったとする中国の研究者の論考が ある。初めは監督官庁と生産窯という別組織であったものが明の中後期ごろに 一体化して、「官窯」すなわち「御器廠」となったものだろうという。興味深 い説である。 明時代の景徳鎮官窯は、元時代に五爪の龍文を焼造していた市街のほぼ中心 に位置する珠山に設置された。その実態は景徳鎮市陶瓷考古研究所によって発 掘・調査され、次第に明らかになりつつある。この珠山一帯において、以降、 清時代まで官窯の焼造が行なわれた。中国の歴史上、中国の南部から興って統 一王朝を建国したのは明王朝だけといわれているが、同様に、ここで南部に属 する景徳鎮も中国随一の窯場となって市場を席巻することとなったのである。

青花磁器 「青花」とは、白磁の素地にコバルトを含む顔料で絵付けをし、透明釉をか けて 1200 度以上の高火度で焼成したものである。コバルト顔料は青藍色に呈 色するもので、その色からの「青」 、そして「花」は「文様」という意味で、 まさに青い文様という名称である。日本では染織の藍染になぞらえて「染付」 と呼ぶのも青い文様からの命名であろう。絵筆を用いて透明釉の下に文様が表 ゆうかさい

わされる「釉下彩」技法のひとつで、この技法としては他に鉄顔料を用いた「鉄 ゆうりこう

絵」や銅顔料を用いた「釉裏紅」がある。 釉下彩で初めに登場するのが鉄絵で、金元時代の華北の磁州窯や南宋時代の 江西省吉州窯でとくに広く行なわれている。詳細は不明ながら、その技法が元 しんあん

時代には景徳鎮に伝わったようで、韓国新 安沖で発見された沈没船の積み荷 し

のなかに景徳鎮産の鉄絵と釉裏紅の小盤がある。この沈船からは「至治三年」 （1323）と墨書された木簡が伴出しているので、このころにはすでに釉下彩鉄 さいぎゅうぼうげつ

絵の技法が景徳鎮に伝わっていることがわかる。また、その文様は犀牛望月や 鹿、また線描の切枝花などがいたって簡素に描かれたもので、金元時代の磁州 窯の文様とはかなり異なっており、その点からすると、影響関係はむしろ吉州 窯との関連を考えた方がよいのかもしれない。 青花は元時代の景徳鎮で完成される。その完成された姿は、元時代になって 現われる径 45㎝ほどの大盤にみられる。元青花の大盤の文様構成や題材には 様ざまなものがみられるが、その初期的な作品とみなされるのが、イスラム圏 の銅盤の形や文様構成を模倣したもので、盤面を幾つもの文様帯に分けて表わ す構成や、幾何文様などを隙間なく盤面に埋めつくす文様配置などの点で、文 様構成と形態においてかなり忠実な模倣といってよいものである。表わされた 文様自体はイスラム的というより中国的な文様であるが、それはまたかの地の エキゾチズムを満足させたのであろう。また、顔料の分析によって、元青花に 用いられたコバルトには砒素が含まれていることがわかっている。これは中国 産にはなく、西アジアのイスラム圏で産出されるコバルトの特徴といえるもの で、こうした点から、元青花はイスラム圏の需要が完成を導いたものと解され る。実際、イスラム圏ではコバルトで模様を描いた陶器がすでに存在していた。 元朝を建国したフビライは海上貿易を重視していたといわれ、ユーラシアを席 巻していたモンゴル帝国では、イスラム圏との交流も盛んであったらしい。そ うした状況下でイスラム圏は、景徳鎮の優秀な白磁に青い文様が飾られる作品 を注文したかと思える。元青花の完成はこうした状況下でなされたのではない だろうか。トルコのトプカプ宮殿やイランのアルデビル寺院に多くの収蔵品が

残ることによってもその状況が推し量れるのである。そしてそれを主導したの が「将作院」であり、「浮梁磁局」であったのだろう。ここで、元時代独特の 力強い描写の龍文様や波濤文、ラマ式蓮弁とよばれる角張った蓮弁文といった ような元時代文様の規格が定められたのであろう。 貿易陶磁として完成された青花磁器は、やがて中国の民間でも需要を得るよ しせい

うになる。元青花の発見の契機となった、至 正 11 年（1351）の銘文のあるロ ンドンのデイヴィッド財団所蔵の青花雲龍文象耳瓶一対は、江西省玉山県の人 びとが道観に寄進した旨が銘文に記されている。きわめて完成された姿の上質 の作品で、元時代末期には青花磁器は民間では相応の評価を得ていたことがわ かる。 この青花磁器が景徳鎮官窯に採り入れられるようになる。

洪武期の青花 かくこようろん

洪武 20 年（1387）に曹昭によって著わされた『格古要論』には、「青花磁器 は俗なもの」とする評価がみられ、事実、青花磁器の焼造は、元時代や次の永 楽・宣徳期に比べて低調であったように思える。洪武 4 年（1371）に中国人の 海外渡航や貿易を制限禁止する「海禁令」を発布したことによって国が閉ざさ れ、対外的には明朝に対して臣下の礼をとることで朝貢貿易を行なう近隣諸国 との関係のみとなった。そのためイスラム圏との交易はとだえ、その需要が見 込めなくなったことが、青花磁器焼造の低調であったことの要因と思える。さ らに元時代に用いられていた西アジア産のコバルト顔料の入手も途絶えたこと もその一因であろう。確かに元青花や永楽・宣徳期の青花にみられる呈色の鮮 やかさとは異なり、洪武期の青花は暗く沈んだ感じの呈色となっている。その ためか青花の代わりに銅顔料を用いた釉裏紅の焼造量が比較的に多くなってい る。青花と釉裏紅の器形や文様に共通したものがみられるのもこの時期の特徴 である。器種は元時代をほぼ踏襲するが、造形にやや変化がみられ、文様構成 も元青花の濃密なものに比べ、白地が多くなり、文様の描写も規格的なものに なる。洪武年間はまさに元青花と永楽青花の橋渡しをした時期とみるべきであ ろう。

洪武帝の後を継いだ建文帝との「靖難の変」に勝利して即位した永楽帝は、 元朝を開いたクビライに心酔し、その華夷に君臨した皇帝像を理想としたよう で、その実現に努めるべく、洪武期とは打って変わって海禁政策を解き、海外 交易を促進させようとした。その一環として行なわれたのが、イスラム教徒の かんがん

宦官・鄭和を派遣した南海遠征である。遠征は永楽 3 年（1405）に始まり宣徳

8 年（1433）まで行なわれた。艦隊の編成には多少の変動があったようである が、おおむね 60 余艘に及ぶ大船団が組織され、その船も船長 150 ｍ、8000ト ン級と記録される大船で、第一次の航海では 27,800 余人を率いての航海であっ たといわれる。積み荷は絹織物と陶磁器などで、陶磁器は龍泉窯の青磁と景徳 鎮の青花磁器であり、これは元時代以来の輸出品目であった。元時代に行なわ れていた官営貿易の再開であり、こうした官営貿易の積み荷となった青花磁器 は景徳鎮官窯で、青磁は龍泉官窯で焼造されたはずである。そして数年にわた る航海の帰国時には、寄港地の様ざまな物産を持ち帰ったと伝えられている。 その様子は、永楽期の名臣といわれる夏原吉が、この遠征艦隊を「西洋取宝船」 と命名していることでもうかがえる。 し

珠山の出土陶片のなかに、口縁部に「永楽元」（1403）、「永楽肆 年」（1406） と記した釉裏紅瓶の磁片がある。釉裏紅であることもさることながら、ここに 表わされた文様は、その紀年さえなければ洪武期の作品とみるべき様式を示し ている。したがって永楽初期ではまだ永楽様式といったものが確立しておらず、 洪武期の形式を踏襲していたと考えられる。つまり鄭和の第一次の航海では洪 武風な作品を積んでいた可能性が強く、トルコやイランにわずかながら収蔵さ れている洪武様式といえる作品は、第一次の航海でもたらされたものと推測さ れる。しかし土産のコバルトを多く用いたと考えられる洪武様式の作品は、そ の呈色の悪さからイスラム圏では受け入れがたく、そこでイスラム産のコバル トの輸入が急務となり、その顔料を得て新たな様式の確立があったのではない だろうか。鄭和の航海によって得られたこの時期の顔料は、文献には、原語の スマルトの音訳とされる「蘇麻離青」と記され、元青花以来の鮮やかな呈色が 再現することができた。しかしその文様構成は元青花のそれとはだいぶ異なり、 青花文様は余白を有効に生かした格調高いものに仕上がっている。白磁は、き てん

め細かく滑らかな「甜（塡）白」と称される極上の素地が開発され、そこに鮮 やかな青い文様が描かれる。永楽様式の誕生である。さらに永楽青花の特徴と しては、イスラム圏の需要を受けて、イスラム銅器の水注や燭台、扁壺などの 瓶や碗形など、多様な器形の作品が作られていることにある。文様にもアラベ

たなかにラマ僧の帽子の形を模した僧帽壺という作品が白磁や青花で作られて いる。これは永楽帝がラマ教に帰依していたことに起因するのであろう。 永楽年間ではごくわずかながら、官窯銘を記した作品が作られている。それ はおもに白磁や紅釉の器物で、僧帽壺の胴に「永」「楽」「年」「製」の篆書を 一字ずつ細い線彫りで表わしたものや、高足杯の見込みにやはり細い線彫りで あつしゅはい

「永楽年製」の篆書二行四字銘を表わしたもの、そして青花では「圧手杯」と よばれる径 9㎝ほどの杯の見込みに、やはり篆書二行四字銘を記したもののみ が遺品として残されている。この時期ではいまだ官窯銘は制度化していない。 漆器などでは「大明永楽年製」の楷書六字銘が表わされているところからみる と、六字銘ではなく四字銘である点、また篆書銘であることなどをみると、永 楽年間では官窯の制度がいまだ定まっていなかったように思える。

宣徳の青花 こうき

永楽帝の長子として即位した洪 煕帝は名君と期待されたが、即位後わずか

8 カ月で崩御し、その後を継いで即位したのが洪煕帝の長子である宣徳帝であ る。宣徳帝は 38 歳で宣徳 10 年（1435）に崩御したため、宣徳年間はわずか 10 年余りの短い期間を統治していたにすぎない。しかし、宣徳帝は文武の資質に 優れ、詩文や画業などにも優れた芸術感覚を有していたともいわれる。そして 洪煕帝の遺志を尊重、継承し、内政・民生の安定につくし、国力の回復を行なっ た名君であった。因みに、鄭和も宣徳 10 年に逝去している。 そうした仁政のためか、海外との交流は控え目であったようであるが、尊敬 する永楽帝の遺志を継承してか、先に記したように、鄭和に第 7 次の派遣を命 じている。その派遣は宣徳 5 年（1430）のことで、帰国は同 8 年（1433）であった。 前回の第 6 次航海は永楽 19 年（1421）に出発し 20 年に帰国、分遣隊も 21 年 に帰国している。6 次航海の後、永楽 22 年には永楽帝が崩御し、皇位を継承し た洪煕帝も在位 1 年足らずで崩御している。6 次から 7 次の航海の間は 9 年の 歳月が流れているのは、社会の混乱のなかで、やはり内政の安定につくし、国 力の充実に努めていたものであろう。そして国家の安定を待って、鄭和に再度 の航海を命じたのである。即位後 5 年にしての鄭和の派遣という時間的推移か ら考えたとき、航海の積み荷となった陶磁器は、永楽期の様式をほぼ踏襲した ものと考えられる。永楽と宣徳の様式が不分明なのは、こうした理由に起因す るのではないだろうか。

ただ、永楽期と宣徳期の官窯を明確に識別できるのが官窯銘である。おそら く宣徳期のごく初期には無銘であったに違いないが、やがて漆器などの制度を 採り入れて、官窯銘を記すことが制度化する。この官窯銘の制度化について 考えたとき、 『明実録』などにある次の記録が気になるところである。その記 録とは、宣徳帝は即位間もなくの洪煕元年（1425）、祖父と父の霊を慰めるた めの祭祀に用いる白磁祭器を景徳鎮に製作させるために宦官の張善を派遣した が、しかし張善は陶工を酷使し、また御用品の横流しをしたため、宣徳 2 年 （1427）に捕えられ、さらし首の刑に処された、という事件のことである。こ のような事件に触発されて、御用品の横流しを防ぐ目的もあって、明確に御用 品を識別できる官窯銘を記す方式を選択したとも思える。 珠山の出土品を見ると、官窯銘の書き方もいくつかの例がみられる。例えば、 景徳鎮の研究者であった劉新園氏の論考によると、宣徳帝が好んだ遊びと伝え こおろぎ

る、コオロギを戦わせる遊びに用いたといわれる蟋蟀壺の例を採り上げて、出 土層位の関係から、無銘のものに始まり、縦書き「大明宣徳年製」の一行書の もの、そして二重圏内の六字二行書のものになったという。はじめは漆器に倣 い、枠無しの一行書が行なわれ、やがて、以後の官窯に受け継がれる二重圏内 二行書に定型化したという。さらに氏は、無銘と一行書のものは宣徳 5 年（1430） の官窯の焼造を一時停止するまでの作品で、二重圏内二行書六字銘のものは同

8 年に焼造を再開したのちの作品と推測している。いずれにせよ永楽期とは一 線を劃すものとしてここに官窯銘が制度化されたのである。 宣徳期の青花と永楽期の作品と明確な差異は認めにくいが、それでもいささ きっぴ

かの時代性は認められる。文献には、宣徳官窯の特徴として「橘皮文」と称さ れる釉膚が採り上げられている。焼成の際に釉中に含まれた気泡が抜けた痕跡 で、柑橘類の皮にみられるかすかな起伏をいう。これによって釉薬の光沢がお さえられ、しっとりとした温雅なものとなっている。永楽から宣徳にかけて、 上にかかる透明釉が比較的厚めであることも、その特徴を現出しているのかも しれない。さらに盤などの側壁内面などを白地に残し、そこに美妙な型押し文 様を表わす作品がある。こうした型押し文様はすでに元時代にもみられるが、 宣徳期にはさらに品格優れたものに昇華させている。また、龍などの主文様を 濃い色調で描き、その背景の波濤文などの従文様を淡い色調とするなど、青花 の濃淡で変化をつけて主文様を際立たせるといったような優れた手法を用い て、格調高い作品を作り出している。宣徳唐草と呼ばれる独特の花の描写も特 徴的である。こうした宣徳様式は宣徳後期に生み出されたものであろう。古来、 宣徳官窯の青花を明時代青花の第一に挙げるほど評価が高いが、確かにその評

価には頷けるものがある。 また、青花顔料の近年の分析結果によると、宣徳官窯の顔料は中国産のもの が使われているという。洪武期には 20 座であった官窯の窯が宣徳では 58 座に 増えたといわれる。そうした需要からの国産化であったのかもしれないが、そ れにしても永楽青花と宣徳青花の呈色の差異はほとんど感じられない。良質な 顔料の発見があったか、あるいは顔料精製の点での大きな進歩があったのかも しれない。

おわりに 珠山における発掘調査によって、永楽・宣徳期には様ざまな技法が試みられ ていたことが判明している。永楽期では「白磁金彩」や「白磁緑彩」など、宣 とうさい

徳期では「青花黄彩（黄地青花）」や「豆彩」などである。永楽期の金彩では 青花碗の一部に施された例があり、また宣徳の豆彩はチベットで一点発見され ているが、その他は当時の遺例がなく、のちの成化年間以降に多く遺例の残る 手法の作品であるところから、むしろ永楽・宣徳年間は、その後の景徳鎮の先 導役として、進むべき道筋を示した時期といってよいと思える。そうした技法 のみならず、成化年間にはすでに、永楽・宣徳年間の作品は理想的な、憧憬す べき作品として、模倣の対象ともなっている。成化官窯の作品でも形態や文様、 文様構成などに忠実な模倣作が焼造されている。こうしてみると、明時代の景 徳鎮官窯の基礎を築き、さらに以後の指標までも示したのが永楽・宣徳期の官 窯であったということがわかる。 そしてそこで焼造された作品は、類いまれな美質を示していた。上質なコバ ルト顔料が、厚く掛かった釉中にわずかに溶け出すことで、文様に独特の柔ら かさが加わり、さらに斑点を生じる場合もあり、表わされた文様に得も言われ ぬ風雅な美しさを醸し出している。こうした特徴が、先に記したように、青花 磁器では永楽・宣徳期の作品を明時代随一と評価している由縁であろう。確か に明時代中期以降、青花磁器は美質において永楽・宣徳期を超える作品は作ら れていないといってよい。その点で永楽・宣徳期こそが、歴史上もっとも優美 な、格調高い青花磁器を作りだした時期といっても過言ではないだろう。

Blue and White Porcelain in the Early Ming Dynasty Nakazawa Fujio

Introduction

Having defeated the then Mongol-led Yuan dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang was enthroned as emperor Hongwu in 1368 to begin what would become the Ming dynasty, which ruled China for 300 years. During this 300 -year period and into the later Qing dynasty, the story of Chinese ceramics primarily speaks of the history of the kilns at Jingdezhen. The Ming dynasty courtʼs establishment of Jingdezhen as the sole imperial kiln providing ceramics to the imperial household was a major factor in this historical focus. The establishment of the Jingdezhen kilns concentrated various ceramic techniques and methods, and those techniques formed the basis for the flourishing and development of a rich creativity that led to a succession of superb artworks. By extension, we can probably also say that Jingdezhen's flourishing success meant the decline of other kiln sites.

The early Ming dynasty was the cornerstone for Jingdezhen's development, namely, the combined reigns of emperors Hongwu to Yongle and Xuande.

Particularly in any consideration of the Jingdezhen imperial kilns, the absence of imperial kiln trademark-like marks or confirmed extant works from the Zhengtong, Jingtai to Tianshun eras which followed Xuande means that at this stage of research we must use the Xuande era as one cutoff point. However, even during these three reign periods there are a few scant records of imperial kiln firing production found in historical texts. Recent excavations at Jingdezhen have included trenches that extend from the Zhengtong to Tianshun reigns strata.

The assessment and organization of the materials found in those trenches will hopefully and gradually clarify the facts about conditions at the site. Even so, a copper ground cloisonné type often made in the Jingtai era was nicknamed "Jingtai Blue,景泰藍". Some of these works bear the inscription "Da Ming Jingtai Nian Zhi 大明景泰年製" indicating they were for imperial use. And yet, one of the mysteries of this period is the complete absence of porcelain or ceramic works made with the emperor's reign marks.

The Imperial Kilns at Jingdezhen

Here I will use the term imperial kilns or kiln to refer to the special kilns responsible solely for meeting the needs of the imperial family.

The Southern Song imperial kilns in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province are the earliest example of imperial kilns mentioned in historical texts whose actual site has been identified. The location of the two sets of kilns mentioned in the texts, namely the Xiuneisi imperial kilns and the Jiaotanxia imperial kilns, was confirmed and those sites then excavated. While many aspects of their similarities and differences remain unconfirmed, at this point these two sites can clearly be seen as the genesis of the "imperial kiln" concept.

By the Yuan dynasty the imperial court established a directly managed organization called the "Jiangzuoyuan 将作院" which was "responsible for producing different types of various wares 掌成造 …… 異様百色造作". One of that organization's subordinate bureaus was called the "Fuliang Ciju 浮梁磁局", literally, the Fuliang ceramic bureau. Jingdezhen is located in Fuliang, Raozhou prefecture and Jingdezhen was likely the kiln site managed by that ceramic bureau, which is said to have been established in 1278 (Zhiyuan 15). However, that ceramic bureau was also responsible for the production of lacquerware. The Fuliang ceramic bureau is thought to have differed from imperial court-operated specialist kilns. This assumed differentiation is based on further investigations in Jingdezhen which indicate that works with the "two-horn five-claw" dragon motif reserved for the sole use of the emperor were clearly fired at kilns in the Zhushan district (珠山地区), the Luomaqiao kiln site (落馬橋窯址) in Jingdezhen city itself, and at the Huidan kilns (湖田窯) on the outskirts of Jingdezhen. In essence, the Fuliang ceramic bureau was an organization that oversaw and controlled the production of different types of objects.

Then the Ming dynasty established their imperial kilns at Jingdezhen.

There are two theories regarding the establishment date of these kilns, namely the 1369 (Hongwu 2) theory and the 1426 (Xuande 1) theory. Both theories are based on historical texts and as yet, there is no consensus on the dating.

However, the Ming founding emperor Hongwu/Zhu Yuanzhang is said to have brought Jingdezhen under his control in 1361 (Zhizheng 21) and it is possible that he adapted the existing Fuliang ceramic bureau system for use at the newly established imperial kilns. With that in mind, earlier generations of scholars have

used the term "Yuqichang 御器廠" to refer to the Ming dynasty's exclusive-use imperial kilns. However, some Chinese scholars today argue that in the early Ming dynasty the "imperial kilns" and the Yuqichang were separate organizational structures and the Yuqichang was an imperial supervisory bureau like the Fuliang ceramic bureau. These scholars posit that at first the imperial kilns were a different organizational arrangement consisting of a management bureau and production kilns, but then these two elements were unified around the mid to late Ming dynasty, and thus became the "imperial kilns" referred to in Chinese as Yuqichang. This is a fascinating hypothesis.

The Ming dynasty Jingdezhen kilns were situated in Zhushan, the close to mid-Jingdezhen town district where the five-claw dragon wares were fired in the Yuan dynasty. The actual nature and situation of those Ming Jingdezhen kilns is gradually being clarified by the excavations and investigations conducted by the Jingdezhen Ceramic Archaeological Research Institute. The imperial kilns then operated continuously in the Zhushan district until the Qing dynasty. In the history of China, the Ming dynasty is said to have been the only dynasty that arose in southern China to build a unified country. In the same manner, this Jingdezhen located in the south became China's preeminent kiln site that came to dominate the ceramics marketplace.

Blue and White (Qinghua) Porcelain

The Chinese term "qinghua 青花" refers to wares with a white porcelain base clay on which designs have been painted with pigments that contain cobalt, coated with a transparent glaze and then fired to a 1200 Celsius or higher temperature. Cobalt pigments fire to an indigo blue color, which led to the combination of the "blue 青" character and "flower or motifs/design花" character to signify blue designs. The Japanese dubbed such wares "sometsuke 染付", a term that means dyed and conjures images of Japanese indigo-dyed textiles. Hence sometsuke is another ware name based on blue designs. Using a brush to paint

cobalt pigment onto clay and then coating it with transparent glaze is an "underglaze painting" technique, just as "tiehui 鉄絵", literally iron underglaze pictures, employs iron pigments while those drawn with a copper red pigment are known as "youlihong 釉裏紅".

Iron was the first of these underglaze pigments to appear and was particularly widely used at the Cizhou kilns in northern China during the Jin and Yuan dynasties, and the Jizhou kilns in Jiangxi province during the Southern Song dynasty. While details are unclear, it seems that this technique was transmitted to Jingdezhen in the Yuan dynasty. There were small Jingdezhen-produced underglaze iron and underglaze copper red dishes in the cargo hold of a sunken ship discovered off the coast of Sinan in Korea. Wooden tablets with the date 1323 (Zhizhi 3) were found in the shipwreck, and thus we know that underglaze

iron techniques had been transmitted to Jingdezhen by around that time. The motifs drawn in this technique were simply brushed images of "ox watching the moon", deer, or line-drawn images of cut flowering branches, thus differing considerably from the motifs found on Jin and Yuan dynasty Cizhou ware. Given that difference it is probably appropriate to consider an influence relationship with Jizhou wares rather than Cizhou wares.

Blue and white porcelain was perfected at Jingdezhen in the Yuan dynasty. The epitome of that attainment can be seen in the approximately 45 cm diameter large platters which began to appear in the Yuan dynasty. A variety of motif compositions and themes can be seen in Yuan blue and white large platters, but the earliest period examples emulate Islamic world copper platter shapes and motif compositions, specifically, a surface composition divided into sections and geometric designs used to entirely cover the platter surface. These Jingdezhen wares quite ably replicate the source motif composition and formation. The actual motifs depicted were more Chinese than Islamic in nature, but even so they seem to have fulfilled the Islamic world's need for exoticism. Analysis of the pigments used reveals that the cobalt used in Yuan blue and white included arsenic. This chemical composition is said to have been characteristic of cobalt produced and exported from the West Asian Islamic world, not Chinese-produced. Thus we can posit that demand from the Islamic world led to the creation and maturation of Yuan blue and white. In fact, ceramics with designs drawn in cobalt already existed in the Islamic world. Kublai Khan, the founder of the Yuan dynasty, is said to have valued maritime trade, and it seems that the Mongol Empire which swept over Eurasia also had a flourishing exchange with the Islamic world. Amidst these circumstances the Islamic world is thought to have ordered superb white porcelain wares adorned with blue designs from the Jingdezhen kilns, which in

turn was the likely impetus for the maturation of Yuan blue and white. The large number of extant works in the Topkapi Palace in Turkey and the Sheikh Safi al-din Khānegāh and Shrine Ensemble in Iran also suggest such conclusions. The previously mentioned Jiangzuoyuan and Fuliang ceramic bureau probably took a leading role in this process. These Islamic world commissions may have set the standard and nature of Yuan dynasty's distinctively, powerfully drawn motifs, such as the dragon motif and large wave motif, or the lama-style, squared corner lotus petal motif.

Eventually there was demand from the Chinese marketplace for these blue and white porcelains originally created as trade ceramics. The pair of blue and white vases, known as the David Vases, with elephant head handles and scrolling dragon designs inscribed with a date of 1351 (Zhizheng 11) in the Sir Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art in London –– which incidentally set off the modern world's rediscovery of Yuan blue and white ware –– bears an inscription that states that people in Yushan county, Jiangxi province donated the pair to a Taoist temple. The extremely well-made form of this superb pair indicates that blue and white porcelains were highly regarded by ordinary people in the late Yuan dynasty. Then it was this superior blue and white ware type that was taken up by the Jingdezhen imperial kilns.

Hongwu Blue and White Porcelain

The Gegu yaolun (格古要論) written in 1387 (Hongwu 20) by Cao Zhao, rated "blue and white porcelains as vulgar". In fact, the production of blue and white porcelain was at a lower ebb in the Hongwu era than in the Yuan or succeeding Yongle and Xuande eras. China was effectively closed by the 1371 (Hongwu 4) proclamation of "haijinling 海禁令", a series of edicts prohibiting Chinese people from ocean-going voyages and limiting or forbidding trade.

Interaction with other countries was limited to relationships with neighboring countries via the tribute trade involved in the vassal states sending tributes to the Ming court. This meant that diplomacy and trade with the Islamic world ceased and demand from that realm was not in their purview, which can be seen as one reason for the lower quality blue and white wares produced. The inability to acquire West Asian-produced cobalt materials was likely another cause of this

decline. Indeed, Hongwu blue and white wares were darker and muddied in tone, thus differing from the clear colors of the Yuan wares and those of the Yongle and Xuande eras. Hence there was a relative increase in the amount of underglaze copper red porcelain, which uses a copper red pigment in place of the cobalt, in works fired. This period is characterized by the shared vessel shape and motifs found in both underglaze blue and underglaze copper red works. While the vessel types essentially carried on those of the Yuan dynasty, slight changes can be seen in their shapes. Compared to the density of their Yuan counterparts, the motif compositions included large amounts of white ground and the motif depiction itself was also standardized. Indeed, the Hongwu era can be seen as a period bridging Yuan blue and white and Yongle blue and white.

Yongle Blue and White Porcelain

Emperor Hongwu was followed by emperor Jianwen, who in turn was overthrown in "the Jingnan rebellion" by Zhu Di who became emperor and took the reign name of Yongle. The new emperor greatly admired the Yuan dynasty founder Kublai Khan and seemingly idealized his imperial stance of ruling over both China and foreign lands. In order to achieve such rule, and breaking from the Hongwu era, he struck down the ocean-going ban and spurred on foreign trade and diplomacy. One element of these policies was the dispatch of his Muslim court eunuch Zheng He on expeditionary voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Asia and East Africa from 1405 (Yongle 3) to 1433 (Xuande 8). It seems that the composition of each expedition varied somewhat, but in general each was a large fleet of more than 60 vessels, each measuring 150 meters in length and 8,000 tons in weight. The first expedition is said to have included more than 27,800 people.

The freight included silk textiles and ceramics such as Longquan celadons and Jingdezhen blue and white porcelains. This freight selection constituted China's export goods from the Yuan dynasty onwards. These expeditions can be regarded as the reopening of Yuan official trade and as such, naturally the freight carried by this official trade also must have been official goods, namely, Jingdezhen imperial kiln blue and white porcelain and Longquan imperial kiln celadon. When the ships returned to China in the ensuing years, they brought back various goods from places they had visited and those items entered the Chinese realm. This

feature of the expeditions is reflected in the fact that the important Yongle era vassal and minister Xia Yuanji (夏原吉) called this expeditionary fleet the "xiyang qubaochuan 西洋取宝船", literally ships carrying treasures taken from the West.

Among the porcelain shards excavated at Zhushan, the shards of two underglaze copper red vases bear mouth rim area inscriptions that read "永楽元" and "永楽肆 年", 1403 (Yongle 1) and 1406 (Yongle 4), respectively. In addition to the fact that

it is underglaze copper red, without these inscriptions the style of the depicted motifs would identify the vases as Hongwu era pieces. Thus, a Yongle style had not yet been established in the early Yongle and they were basing their works on the styles of Hongwu era works. We can thus suggest two things, first that Zheng He's first fleet may have carried Hongwu style works made at the very beginning of the Yongle period, and second, that this first fleet carried the very few works said to be Hongwu style today in Turkish and Iranian collections. However, the Hongwu style works that are thought to have used a great deal of Chinese locally produced cobalt were not well received by the Islamic world due to their inferior coloring. Wouldnʼt this have resulted in an urgent effort to import Islamic cobalt and use that pigment to establish a new style. This period's pigments obtained via Zheng He's fleet were described as "sumali qing 蘇麻離青" in historical texts, thus using a selection of phonetic characters to approximate the original term "smalt". This was how, for the first time since Yuan blue and white, they were able to rediscover a vivid cobalt color. And yet the motif composition is quite different from that of Yuan blue and white porcelain, with the underglaze blue design's effective use of negative space creating a refined work. In white porcelain they developed an extremely pure ground, infinitely fine and smooth in texture, which was dubbed "tianbai 甜(塡) 白". They then painted motifs in vivid blue on that white ground. Thus, the Yongle style was born. Demand from the Islamic world is a further characteristic of Yongle blue and white, which led to the creation of works in a variety of vessel types resembling Islamic metalwares, such as ewers, candle sticks and bottles like pilgrim flasks or bowl forms. Arabesques and other Islamic motif types were also incorporated into the designs. One type of work that emerged in this group was the "monk ʼs cap" ewer type whose shape is said to resemble the hats worn by Tibetan Buddhist monks, made in both white porcelain and blue and white forms. This vessel type might derive from the Yongle emperor's devotion to Tibetan Buddhism, also known as Lamaism.

Only a very few works with imperial reign marks remain from the Yongle era. These works are primarily white porcelain or ruby-red glazed works, including monk's cap ewers, whose shoulders bear fine line incised individual characters in seal script spelling out "Yong Le Nian Zhi 永-楽-年-製", stem cups with a two-line four-seal script character mark "Yongle Nian Zhi," fine-line incised at the bottom of the cup's inner surface. In blue and white wares, the only extant works are approximately 9 cm diameter footed cups known as press-hand cups which have seal script two-line, four-character marks. During this period the emperor's reign mark had not yet been standardized. Judging from the block script six-character marks on lacquer works that read "Da Ming Yongle Nian Zhi," and the fact that there were four-character not six-character marks written in seal script on these ceramics, it seems that the imperial kiln system was not yet fixed during the Yongle era.

Xuande Blue and White Porcelain

Emperor Yongle's eldest child was set to reign under the name emperor Hongxi, but died a mere eight months after ascending the throne. His eldest son was named his successor, ruling as emperor Xuande. In turn, emperor Xuande died at the age of 38 in 1435 (Xuande 10), and thus the Xuande era was a short period lasting just over ten years. Emperor Xuande, however, was gifted both in military and literary arts, and he is said to have had a superb artistic sensibility in both literature and painting. He honored the dying wishes of his father emperor Hongxi by continuing to work towards the stabilization of internal politics and seeing to the life of his people, and is remembered as a great ruler who restored the nation's power. By chance, Zheng He also died in 1435.

Possibly because of his benevolent rule or out of reverence for emperor Yongle's legacy, as noted above, emperor Xuande dispatched Zheng He on a seventh expedition, even though Xuande himself was less engaged with foreign diplomacy. That expedition departed in 1430 (Xuande 5) and returned in 1433 (Xuande 8). The previous, or sixth, expedition set sail in 1421 (Yongle 19)

and returned in 1422 (Yongle 20), with the subsidiary fleet returning in 1423 (Yongle 21). Soon after the sixth expedition, emperor Yongle died in 1424, and the imperial throne was inherited by emperor Hongxi, who himself died less

than a year into his rule. Nine years passed between the sixth and the seventh expeditions, probably because the emperor poured his efforts into stabilizing the internal government and solidifying the country's power during a period of social unrest. Then once again he ordered Zheng He off on another expedition. When we consider his shift of the dispatch of Zheng He to five years after he ascended the throne, we can surmise that the ceramic wares in that fleet's cargo essentially retained the Yongle style. This may be one of the reasons for the somewhat obscure differences between the Yongle and Xuande styles.

However, the imperial reign marks allow us to clearly distinguish between the imperial kiln wares of the Yongle era and the Xuande era. While undoubtedly there were unmarked works at the very beginning of the Xuande era, eventually they implemented the mark system used on lacquerware and standardized the marking of imperial kiln wares. When we consider this standardization of the imperial reign marks, we note textual references in such historical records as the Mingshilu (明実録). This history recounted an incident that began in 1425 (Hongxi 1, right after the accession of emperor Xuande), when emperor Xuande dispatched the court eunuch Zhang Shan to Jingdezhen to supervise the making of the white porcelain ritual wares that emperor Xuande would use in the ceremonies performed to pray for the souls of his grandfather and father.

Zhang Shan, however, overworked the potters and siphoned off imperial use ware for sale in the black market. He was arrested in 1427 (Xuande 2) and beheaded.

We can thus consider that such incidents set off an effort to prevent this imperial ware black market, whereby they selected this method of placing the imperial reign mark on works in order to clearly differentiate those for imperial use.

The excavated works from Zhushan reveal several different ways the imperial reign marks were written. According to an article by Liu Xinyuan of the Jingdenzhen Ceramic Archaeological Research Institute, there were cricket jars said to have been used in the cricket competitions which were a favorite pastime of emperor Xuande. Judging from the strata layers where the cricket jars were excavated in the dig, first there were unmarked examples, then those with a single vertical line stating "Da Ming Xuande Nian Zhi," followed by those with a six-character two-line mark written inside a double circle. Liu said that they employed the lacquerware mark style, first using an unframed, single-line mark, and then standardizing it to a two-line mark within a double circle. He

further posited that the works with no marks or one-line marks were made before 1430 (Xuande 5) when imperial kiln operations were temporarily suspended, and

those with a six-character two-line mark within a double circle were made after imperial kiln operations resumed in 1433. In any case, this standardization of the Xuande reign mark distinguished it from that of the Yongle era.

While it is difficult to definitively differentiate Xuande blue and white from that of the Yongle era, we can see a slight period feel in the latter. Textual sources state that a glaze texture effect known as "orange-peel glaze" was characteristic of Xuande imperial kiln ware. The traces of air bubbles that escaped from the glaze in the firing were thought to resemble an orange peel's surface texture.

This feature lessened the luster of the glaze, giving the work a mild, refined feeling. From the Yongle to the Xuande, a relative thickening of the translucent glaze applied to the works may have contributed to that feature. There are some works, such as dishes, where the inner surfaces of the side walls were left white and then adorned with subtly stamped designs. These stamped designs had already been seen in the Yuan dynasty but rose to even greater heights of refinement and quality in the Xuande era. Dragons and other central motifs were also depicted in a strongly colored palette, while the background wave motifs and other subsidiary motifs were painted in lighter tones. This superb method of bringing the main motifs to the fore through tonal differences in the underglaze blue produced highly refined works. The distinctive depiction of a floral scroll motif that came to be known as Xuande-scroll is also characteristic of the time. This Xuande style is thought to have been created during the later years of Xuande's reign. The past high regard for Xuande imperial kiln blue and white ware meant that it was considered the premier form of Ming underglaze blue wares, an assessment that still stands today.

Recent analysis of cobalt pigments has indicated that the pigments used at the Xuande imperial kilns were Chinese-made. There were 20 factories at the Hongwu imperial kilns, which increased to 58 in the Xuande era. This increased demand may have led to domestic production of the pigment, and yet, even so, the color difference between in Yongle blue and white and that of the Xuande era is essentially undiscernible. This may indicate that either they had discovered a source for high quality pigment or that major advances had been made in pigment refining.

Conclusion

Excavations in Zhushan have clarified that various techniques were trialed at those imperial kilns in the Yongle and Xuande eras. During the Yongle era they tried "white porcelain with gold decoration" and "white porcelain with green decoration", while in the Xuande era they trialed "underglaze blue reserved against yellow overglaze enamel" and "doucai enamel technique". Yongle gold decoration was also found on some of the blue and white bowls, while a single example of Xuande doucai ware has been discovered in Tibet. While there are no other examples from these periods extant, judging from the many extant examples of these techniques from later period, it is probably best to consider the Yongle and Xuande eras as playing a predecessor role for later Jingdezhen, setting sign posts indicating the advance worthy paths for them to take. This is true not only for these techniques. Yongle and Xuande works were already idealized by the Chenghua era and emulated as sought after works. Indeed, there are Chenghua imperial kiln works which faithfully imitate aspects of the earlier works in terms of vessel form, handling design and design composition. These works thus indicate that the Yongle and Xuande imperial kilns both built the foundation for and set the standards for later Ming dynasty imperial kiln wares.

The works fired in these kilns exhibit a rare beauty. The high-quality cobalt pigments melt slightly into the thickly applied glaze, adding a unique softness to the motifs. There are also instances of spots occurring, imbuing the expressed motifs with an indescribably elegant beauty. This characteristic, as noted above, was probably why the Yongle and Xuande eras were considered the pinnacle of Ming dynasty blue and white wares. Indeed, we can say that from the mid Ming onwards there are no works that surpass those of the Yongle and Xuande eras. In this regard, it would not be an exaggeration to say that these two eras produced the highest quality, loveliest underglaze blue porcelains in history.

わが国における明初陶磁の蒐集と歴史 川島 公之

中国陶磁は、元時代に革命が起きる。青花磁器の登場である。器面にコバル トを用いた顔料で文様をあらわす青花は、次代の明に受け継がれて一層の発展 を遂げることになる。この絶頂期が明初と呼ばれる永楽（1403 − 24）・宣徳 （1426 − 35）年間である。

20 世紀に入り、中国陶磁の花形ともいうべき宋、明、清代の官窯が市場に 流入するようになり、先進国で中国陶磁の近代コレクションが数々形成された わけであるが、その主役の一つが明初の青花であった。わが国では、戦後に入っ て急速に蒐集の対象となり、1950 年代から 80 年代にかけてロンドン、ニュー ヨークなどの主要都市で行われたオークションから多くの優れた作品が将来さ れ、現在知られる著名な美術館のコレクションの核となっている。 これら永楽・宣徳期の青花磁器は、いつ頃将来され蒐集されていったか、そ の状況をみていくことにする。

永楽年間に、イスラム産とされる「蘇麻離青（スマルト）」と呼ばれるコバ てん ぱく

ルト顔料を用いた青花が生産されるようになる。また、「甜白」と称される極 めて良質の白磁が作り出されたことにより、青花磁器の生産は活発となる。こ ていわ

の永楽青花が世に知られる要因として挙げられるのが、宦官・鄭 和（1371 −

1435）の遠征による対外貿易であった。鄭和の遠征は、永楽３年（1405）から 宣徳８年（1433）の間に都合７回にわたっているが、このうち 6 回が永楽年間 に敢行された。船団の規模は巨大であり、その主要な積荷は絹織物と陶磁器で あった。 このように、永楽青花はこうした貿易品として焼造された側面がある。ただ この貿易は官営であったことから、明王朝の威信を示すに値する高い水準の作 品が求められた。したがって、永楽青花は官窯の概念で捉えることができるだ ろう。現在トルコのトプカプ宮殿やイランのアルデビル寺院に残される作品の 完成度の高い姿がそれを物語っている。また、中国国内に留まったものも少な くないことから、優れた永楽青花には、貿易陶磁と官窯陶磁という二面性があ り、宣徳青花とは異なった分布を為したと言えよう。 前者の多くは中東のイスラム圏であったが、わが国にも将来していることが、

近年の発掘調査により判明している。江戸城跡・汐 見多聞櫓台石垣地点から出土した陶磁器片のうち、 明暦の大火（明暦 3 年、1657 年）で罹災した陶磁 器群の中に永楽青花の陶片が見つかったのである。 これに関しては水本和美氏の論攷に詳しい。これ によると、現在大和文華館に収蔵されている「青 花牡丹唐草文面盆」（挿図１）と同類の陶片が発見 されている。 ここで大和文華館蔵の面盆について触れること にする。この作品の非常に興味深い点は、その器

形と宣徳銘が入っていることである。先ず器形で あるが、これはイスラム金属器を模していること から中東向けに制作されたと考えられるが、清宮 旧蔵として北京、台北故宮博物院に収蔵されているものが 3 点の他に、現在上 海博物館、南京博物院などにも存在しているので、全て朝貢貿易品としてつく られたわけではない。その数は世界でおそらく 20 点に満たないので、極めて 少ない器形であることがわかる。次に、この作品に宣徳銘が入っている点であ る。これは高台内ではなく、鍔状の口縁部の裏側に記されており、本来である と底裏に二重円圏で記されることからみて、官窯制度が確立して間もない宣徳 年間初期の作と推察される。また文様描写が永楽期に比べると形式化している ことも、この作品が永楽期の様式を引き継いだ宣徳初頭頃の作であることを感 じさせる。宣徳晩期の 1433 年に一度鄭和の遠征が行われているので、宣徳官 窯青花が海を渡った可能性はあろうが、これは概して少ないことからみると、 江戸城からの出土品は、おそらく永楽晩期の作例ではないかと思われる。 しかしながら、この希少な作例がわが国から出土したことはたいへん興味深 く、また将来の下限が明暦の大火の 1675 年と位置づけできる点においても甚 だ貴重な事例であろう。また、水森氏によると、この洗の陶片と同時に永楽青 花盤の陶片 8 点が発見され、これは八稜形の大形の盤と推定される。永楽青花 盤の陶片は、東京大学本郷構内の遺跡からも出土しており、ここは加賀藩邸な どを含む場所であった。 以上の事例から、永楽青花は少なくとも江戸時代初期にはわが国に将来され ていたのである。それでは、これらがいつ将来されたのだろうか。江戸初期で あれば、明末の動乱期に紫禁城からその一部が流出したと考えられ、永楽年間 であれば、琉球王朝へ朝貢貿易品として既に海を渡ったものが、琉球を経由し

て戦国大名や寺院などの権力者の手に渡ったと考えられる。また、早い段階で けいばつ

琉球王朝を支配下に置いていた島津氏の保有となり、その後閨閥関係のあった 徳川将軍家へ渡ったというルートも想像に難くない。 永楽青花に対し宣徳青花は、官窯としての性格が強かったため、19 世紀後 半から始まる清朝動乱期まで海外へ渡ることはほとんどなかった。

さて、近年の中国陶磁コレクションにおいては、永楽・宣徳青花の受容はど のような経緯を辿ったのであろうか。紫禁城、皇帝の離宮、清朝親王家などに 蔵された一級文物が流出するのは 1860 年に起こった円明園事件を端緒とする。 この円明園、そして 1900 年の義和団事件により、宮中所蔵の文物が初めて世 の市場に流出した。また、1911 年の辛亥革命により、皇室の一級文物が多数 流出したことで、欧米や日本を中心とした近代コレクションが形成されたので ある。 この近代中国陶磁コレクションの形成を知るにあたり、重要視される図録 にイギリスの研究家 R. L. ホブソン（1872 − 1941）が 1915 年に著わした『中 国陶磁（Chinese Pottery and Porcelain）全 2 巻』がある。これは、中国陶磁が 市場に流通するようになった 20 世紀初期の様相を非常によく示しており、ま た、当時の中国陶磁蒐集と研究において、イギリスが世界の先導であったとい う点からみて、重要な参考資料にもなり得るものである。この中で明時代に触 れている項があるが、永楽・宣徳青花は掲載されていない。これから推察する と、まだ市場に登場していなかったか、あってもごく少数で研究の対象になっ ていなかったと考えられる。その後ホブソンは、1923 年に『明代の陶磁（The

Wares of the Ming Dynasty）』及び A. L. ヘザリントンとの共著で『中国陶磁器 の美（The Art of the Chinese Potter）』、1924 年に『近世の中国陶磁（The Later

Ceramic Wares of China）』を著わすが、これらにも永楽・宣徳青花の掲載はな い。また、ホブソンの諸著書と同様に当時の中国陶磁蒐集の様相を概観する重 要な文献として、1925 年から 28 年にかけて刊行されたイギリスの中国陶磁蒐 集の第一人者ジョージ・ユーモルフォプロス（1863 − 1939）のコレクション 図録『The George Eumorfopoulos Collection: Catalogue of the Chinese, Corean

and Persian Pottery and Porcelain 全 6 巻』があるが、この中にも永楽・宣徳青 花は見られない。これらに掲載される明代陶磁は、主に中晩期の貿易青花陶磁、 嘉靖・萬暦官窯、法花、金襴手などである。イギリスの書物で明初の作品を確 認できるのは、1931 年にホブソンが著わした『個人蒐集の中国陶磁（Chinese

Ceramics in Private Collections）』で、この中のチャールズ・ラッセル（Charles

Russell）コレクションの中に、宣徳在銘「青花花唐草文把手瓶」、宣徳在銘「青 花花唐草文高足杯」（挿図２、３）が掲載されている。ラッセルは、青花磁器 を好んで蒐め、至正 11 年銘の元青花象耳瓶一点を所有していたことでも知ら れる。

1920 年代の市場に永楽・宣徳青花がほとんど見られないことは、次に挙げ る山中商会展観が実証している。1928 年（昭和 3）11 月に大阪美術俱楽部で 開催された「支那古陶金石展観」は、実に 600 点に及ぶ古代から清代までの作 品が出品されている大規模な展観であった。その中で明清陶磁は約 150 点あり、 その多くが清朝官窯で明代は萬暦五彩尊式瓶が 4 点出ているのみで、明初の作 品は出品されていない。 挿図2 青花花唐草文把手瓶 景徳鎮窯 宣徳在銘 高 14.0 cm 「R. 1911 年の辛亥革命前後の混乱期に、宮中にある一級文物が次々と流出たこ とを考えると、この時に永楽・宣徳青花が市場に登場していてもおかしくない。 にもかかわらず、これらは、清や明後半期を含む他の官窯作品とは確実に遅れ て市場に出ているのである。これは、永楽・宣徳青花が、円明園などの離宮や、 清朝皇族たちのコレクションにはほとんどなく、主に宮中秘蔵品であったと考 えらないだろうか。つまり、北宋汝窯、南宋官窯、明代成化官窯、清代の琺瑯 彩といった宮中の秘宝と同様に貴重視されていたため、その流出は一足遅かっ たのかもしれない。永楽・宣徳青花は、中国では歴代の中国陶磁の中でも珍重 されて来たのではなかろうか。 しかし、1930 年代に入ると、永楽・宣徳青花は徐々に流通し始める。イギ リスでは、先述した 1931 年のチャールズ・ラッセル収蔵品が先駆であるが、

Collection of Sir Percival David』には、永楽青花 3 点と宣徳官窯青花 5 点が掲 載されている。デイヴィッド卿は、1924 年に初めて中国を訪れ中国政府関係 者と密接な関係をつくり、1927 年の二度目の訪中で 40 点程の纏まった皇帝コ レクションを入手している。おそらくこれらは汝窯、南宋官窯、琺瑯彩であろ う。また、1930 年、1931 年と訪れ中国政府から直に貴重な作品を入手したの である。そしてこの中に永楽青花・宣徳官窯青花も含まれていたと考えられる。 この背景には、当時中国における随一の蒐集家であった沈吉甫（1871 − 1952） のコレクション流出があった。沈吉甫は北京の有力な銀行家で、清朝崩壊時銀 行の担保物権として取り押さえられていた多くの皇族・貴族たちのコレクショ ンを、彼の銀行頭取という権力を活かして入手したもので、乾隆帝コレクショ ンも数多く含まれていたという。彼が夫人の死をきっかけにコレクションを手

離したのが 1930 年頃であったことから、これを機にこれまで中国国内に留まっ ていた多くの永楽・宣徳青花が海を渡ったと推測される。

1935 年から 36 年にかけて、イギリスロンドンで、空前絶後の中国美術展覧 会『中国芸術国際展覧会（International Exhibition of Chinese Art）』が開催さ れたが、ここには、デイヴィッド卿を中心に、セリグマン、クラーク、ブード など往時のイギリスの名蒐集家たちの明初青花のコレクションが出品されてい る。皆優れた作品であることから、この時点で、イギリスの中国陶磁蒐集の主 流となっていることがわかる。 さて、 ここで興味深い事例が、フランスのエルネスト・グランディディエ（1833 − 1912）による中国陶磁蒐集である。現在その膨大なコレクションはギメ美術 館の中国陶磁コレクションの基盤となっている。その中に、永楽「青花椿花文 扁壺」 、宣徳在銘「青花龍濤文馬上杯」（挿図４）、宣徳在銘「青花宝相華唐草 文鉢」の 3 点がある。1912 年に没したことを考えると、フランスでは、イギリ スに比べてかなり早い時点で、本格的な明初青花が将来されていたことがわか る。官窯磁器は、前述した 1860 年の円明園事件、1900 年の義和団事件の際に 流出しており、ともにフランス軍が関係していることを考えると、19 世紀後半 から 20 世紀初頭に流通していたと考えることができるので、グランディディ エの官窯コレクションも、世界における中国陶磁蒐集では、かなり早期に成さ れたと位置づけることができよう。 その後欧米では、1938 年 A. D. ブランクストン（1909 − 1941）による景徳 鎮窯祉を踏査した『明初の景 徳 鎮 窯 器（Early Ming Wares

of Chingtechen）』の刊行を契 機に、明初青花に対する関心 が一層高まり、その蒐集も次 第に充実していき、今日の本 格的なコレクションへと進ん でいったものと思われる。

では、わが国の受容はどうであったのか。これはイギリスと比してかなり遅 れることになる。先ずは、明初青花の認識についてであるが、これは 1934 年（昭 和 9）、奥田誠一が「宣徳の染付」と題して『陶磁』第 6 巻 3 号に論じているが、 その内容から、この時点においてわが国では明初青花の認識は低く、研究も発 展途上であったことがわかる。その後 1939 年（昭和 14）に刊行された『陶器 圖録 支那篇（下）』の図版には、デイヴィッド卿の蒐集品が僅かに紹介されて いる程度で、わが国の蒐集品は掲載されていない。 永楽・宣徳青花の蒐集であるが、1930 年代後半になって新進の中国陶磁蒐集 家たちにより開始されたと考えられる。この明初青花に焦点を当てた画期的な 図録が 1943 年（昭和 18）に刊行された、久志卓真（1898 − 1973）著『支那 明初陶磁圖鑑』である。久志は早くに明初青花の水準の高さを評価研究し、当 時の蒐集家所蔵の永楽・宣徳官窯青花を取りあげている。この書物に掲載され ている作品によって、戦前期のわが国の永楽・宣徳青花の蒐集の様相を知るこ とができる。 この時既に、現在わが国を代表する名品が将来されていることがわかる。本 展に出品されている「青花瓜文盤」（図版Ⅰ）はその一つである。大正から昭

和初期の実業家、政治家の岡野繁蔵（1894 − 1975）の旧蔵品で、岡野が将 来した南海陶磁コレクションの中に混じっていたところを廣田不孤斎（1897-

1973）が見出し、梅澤彦太郎（1893 − 1969）に納めた経緯を持つ。当時の明初 青花蒐集家として、梅澤彦太郎の他、井上恒一（1906 − 65）、幸尾隆太郎、伊 東祐淳（1907 − 90）、内藤匡、高島辰之助、山本發次郎（1887 − 1951）が名 を連ねている（挿図５）。なかでも、梅澤彦太郎は戦前・戦後を通じてその第 一人者として高名な蒐集家であった。また、前述した現大和文華館蔵の「青花 おおくら ひさし

牡丹唐草文面盆」も掲載されており、これは著名な蒐集家、大 倉亀（1892 −

1960）の所蔵として紹介されている。 これらの作品以外にも、戦前期に優れた永楽・宣徳青花が将来されていた。

現在大和文華館所蔵となっている永楽青花の名品「青花双魚文大皿」（挿図６） は、戦後まもなくの昭和 21 年から 22 年頃に京都で発見された。京都の名もな い骨董商の店先に並んでいたのを尚雅堂中村忠教（1915 − 1998）が見つけ、 平野古陶軒を経て繭山龍泉堂に入り、昭和 22 年の夏に、大和文華館の命を受 け蒐集活動をしていた矢代幸雄博士（1890 − 1975）に納めたものである。こ の盤は、大正から昭和初期に活躍した中国陶磁研究者中尾万蔵博士（1882 −

1936）の蒐集品であったと言われる。また、宣徳在銘「青花牡丹唐草文天球瓶」 1930 年代に将来されたと伝えられる。戦前期の中国陶磁コレクター （挿図７） も、 としてその名を馳せた、横河民輔（1864 − 1945）コレクションの中にある永 楽「青花束蓮文大皿」（挿図８）も、早くに将来された一つである。 戦後の昭和 20 年代中盤から、明初青花の研究は進歩を遂げるようになる。 一例として、自ら明初青花の蒐集をした内藤匡による論文「初期染附の美しさ」 が 1950 年（昭和 25）の『茶わん』に掲載されている。また、この号にある加 藤唐九郎の「酒器概説」の馬上杯の項に、本展に出品されている宣徳在銘「青 花瑞獣文高足杯」（図版Ⅴ）が掲載されている。この作品も、戦前期に将来さ れたものであろう。このように、戦前期に将来された永楽・宣徳の作品に焦点 が当てられることで、その蒐集も盛んになっていった。 そして、1956 年（昭和 31）4 月下旬から 5 月初旬にかけて、日本陶磁協会主 催の『元明名品展』が日本橋髙島屋で開催された。これは、主に戦前期に将来 された永楽・宣徳青花の名品を一堂に会した展覧会として知られる。この頃か ら、わが国における本格的な明初青花磁器の蒐集が本格化し、その後 1970 年 代から 80 年代にかけて、20 世紀前半期に形成された欧米コレクションの優品 が将来されることで、出光、安宅、松岡、戸栗を代表とする名コレクションが 形成されたのである。

現在、中国人蒐集家を主導とした中国陶磁市場では、永楽・宣徳青花 は蒐集の花形の一つで、その価格も高騰している。もともと評価の高い ジャンルであるが、近年は一層それが顕著にあらわれている。その一例 として、2017 年 4 月に香港で行われたサザビーズの売立に出品された宣 徳在銘「青花魚藻文稜花鉢」（挿図９）は、約 33 億円で落札され明初青 花の最高値を記録した。永楽青花を代表する大形の盤は比較的数あるも のであるが、15 年前の相場の十倍近い価格となっている。このように、 近年の市場動向は、明初青花に殊のほか重きを置いているのである。 永楽・宣徳青花磁器は、中国国内において、貴重な宮廷コレクション の至宝として永らく紫禁城に留め置かれ、20 世紀前半に海外へと流出し た。近代の蒐集という面からみてもこの評価は変わらず、現在ではより 一層の高い人気を博しており、将来的にも蒐集の主軸として、その評価 挿図8 青花束蓮文大皿 景徳鎮窯 永楽年間 径 44.3 cm 東京国立博物館 Photo: TNM Image Archives

The History and Collecting of Early Ming Ceramics in Japan Kawashima Tadashi

During the Yuan dynasty, a revolution occurred in Chinese ceramics, the appearance of blue and white porcelain. This porcelain type which uses cobalt pigment that fires blue to paint designs on a vessel surface was continued and further developed in the succeeding Ming dynasty. The pinnacle of this development occurred in the early Ming dynasty, specifically during the Yongle (1403 -1424) and Xuande (1426 -1435) eras.

In the early 20th century the stars of Chinese ceramics, namely the products of the Song, Ming and Qing dynasty imperial kilns, began to enter the marketplace. This led to the formation of numerous modern collections of Chinese ceramics in nations worldwide. Early Ming blue and white played a central role in that collection formation. In Japan, collectors eagerly took up early Ming blue and white soon after World War II. From the 1950s to the 1980s many of the superb works auctioned at London, New York and other major cities worldwide were purchased and brought to Japan, where today they are the critical masterpieces of famous museum collections.

So here letĘźs consider three things, when did Japanese collectors and museums acquire these Yongle and Xuande era blue and white porcelains, when did they bring them to Japan, and what world events led to those collections being formed at that time.

It seems that in the Yongle era Chinese kilns began to use an Islamic world-produced cobalt pigment known as smalt. This pigment, combined with their use of a highly refined white porcelain called tianbai, quickly led to a flourishing production of blue and white porcelains. These Yongle blue and white works came to the attention of the world thanks to the trade expeditions led by the court eunuch Zheng He (1371-1435). His seven voyages spanned the years 1405 (Yongle 3) to 1433 (Xuande 8), with six occurring during the Yongle era. The

fleet for each was massive, with their primary outward-bound cargo made up of silk textiles and ceramics.

The Yongle blue and white produced as trade goods to be dispatched on these imperial expeditions was by necessity superb quality ware suited to its role as items carried by the Ming court's envoys to the greater world. The exceptionally accomplished forms and styles of extant works at the Topkapi Palace in Turkey and the Sheikh Safi al-din Khānegāh and Shrine Ensemble in Iran are testimony to those quality standards. At the same time, considerable amounts of these wares remained in China itself. In essence, Yongle blue and white has two aspects, namely trade ceramics and imperial court use, a feature which explains its different distribution pattern from that of Xuande blue and white.

The majority of the trade ceramic examples were taken to the Middle Eastern Islamic world and some also arrived in Japan, as recent archaeological excavations have clarified. The ceramic shards excavated from Edo Castle stone rampart sites include Yongle blue and white shards among the ceramic types destroyed in the Great Meireki Fire in 1657 (Meireki 3). For details please see Mizumoto Kazumi's article listed in the reference bibliography at the end of this article. Mizumoto states that shards were found in the Great Meireki Fire strata that are of the same type as the Blue and White Basin with Peony Scroll Design (fig. 1) today in the Museum Yamato Bunkakan.

The Basin's vessel shape and the presence of a Xuande mark make it an extremely fascinating work. First the shape. Given its replication of an Islamic metalware shape, this work is thought to have been made for the Middle Eastern market. But there are three ex-Qing court collection examples of this vessel shape today split between the Palace Museum, Beijing and the National Palace Museum, Taipei collections, along with others in the Shanghai Museum, Nanjing Museum and other collections. Thus, not all of the works of this type were produced as imperial envoy goods. It is an extremely rare vessel shape, with probably less than 20 extant examples worldwide.

Next, the presence of a Xuande mark. This mark appears not on the inside of the base, but rather on the undersurface of the flange-shaped mouth rim.

Xuande usage of a double circle frame inscribed on the bottom of a work, we can surmise that the basin was made in the imperial kilns in the early Xuande era, just after the establishment of the imperial kiln system. Given that the design depiction is more stylized than that of the Yongle era, we can sense that this work is a very early Xuande era piece that continues the style of the Yongle era. Since one of Zheng He's expeditions took place in 1433 during the late Xuande era, it is possible that Xuande imperial blue and white was carried overseas, but judging from the fact that such examples would have been extremely few, we can suggest that the shards excavated at Edo Castle were probably late Yongle era examples.

It is extremely fascinating, however, that this rare vessel type has been excavated in Japan, and these shards are an all the more important example thanks to the fact that the latest possible date for its import to Japan is the 1675 Great Meireki Fire. Mizumoto further states that eight shards of a Yongle blue and white dish were discovered in the same stratum as the basin shards and they are surmised to have been from a large dish with an octagonal foliate rim. Shards of a Yongle blue and white platter have also been excavated from the University of Tokyo's Hongo campus, a site that includes the former Kaga clan residence.

These examples indicate that at the very least Yongle blue and white works were brought to Japan in the early Edo period. Then we might ask when were these specific works brought to Japan. If it was the early Edo period, then they might be some of the works that flowed out of the Forbidden Palace during the chaotic period of the late Ming. If it was during the Yongle era, then it is not hard to imagine their route, crossing the sea to the Ryukyu Islands. They would have been sent as imperial trade goods to the Ryukyu Kingdom, passed through Ryukyuan hands, and then on to the powerful figures in Japan such as Warring States period daimyĹ? or temples. Given that the Ryukyus fell under the dominion of the Shimazu clan at an early stage, it is not hard to imagine that the later marital relationship between that clan and the Tokugawa shogunal family led to their presence at Edo Castle.

As opposed to Yongle blue and white, Xuande blue and white was more specifically an imperial ware, and thus there was very little that flowed overseas until the chaotic late Qing period in the latter half of the 19th century.

Next let us consider the process by which Yongle and Xuande blue and white was received into modern collections of Chinese ceramics. The

Yuanmingyuan Incident in 1860 was the starting point for the flow of first-class cultural properties out of the Forbidden Palace, the imperial villas and the hands of Qing imperial prince families. Then the Boxer Rebellion of 1900 led to the first appearance of cultural properties from the imperial court in the art market.

The Xinhai Revolution of 1911 led to a massive number of first-class cultural properties flowing out of the imperial households, and they then became part of modern collections primarily in Europe, North America and Japan.

The English scholar R. L. Hobson (1872-1941) wrote a two-volume book in 1915, Chinese Pottery and Porcelain, that is an important resource in our understanding of the formation of these modern collections. It provides an extremely good sense of the early 20th century state of affairs when Chinese ceramics began to flow into the market, and it is also an important reference work in terms of how England was the world leader at the time in the collection and research of Chinese ceramics.

The section of Hobsonʼs book dealing with the Ming dynasty, however, does not reproduce images of Yongle and Xuande blue and white porcelain. From this lacunae we can posit that they had not yet appeared in the marketplace, or those very few that had were not yet the subject of study. Later Hobson published The Wares of the Ming Dynasty in 1923 and that same year co-authored The Art of the Chinese Potter with A. L. Hetherington. In 1924 he wrote The Later Ceramic Wares of China. None of these volumes included photographs of Yongle and Xuande

blue and white. Like Hobsonʼs various books, another important publication providing an overview of the state of Chinese ceramic collecting at the time is the six-volume The George Eumorfopoulos Collection: Catalogue of the Chinese, Corean and Persian Pottery and Porcelain published between 1925 and 1928. This catalogue

presents the collection of the premier Chinese ceramic collector in England, George Eumorfopoulos (1863 -1939). Here too there were no pictures of Yongle and Xuande blue and white. The majority of the Ming ceramics reproduced in this catalogue are examples of mid to late Ming trade blue and white porcelains, examples from the Jiajing and Wanli era imperial kilns, Fahua overglaze enamel wares, and Kinrande overglaze enamel and gold wares. The early Ming works which can be confirmed in books published in England include those found in Hobsonʼs 1931 Chinese Ceramics in Private Collections. There he reproduced images of works in the Charles Russell collection, namely Blue and White Tankard with

ferred blue and white porcelains and he is known to have owned a Yuan dynasty blue and white vase with elephant head handles and scrolling dragon design with a Zhizheng 11 (1351) inscription.

An exhibition held by Yamanaka & Co. Ltd. is evidence of the almost complete dearth of Yongle and Xuande blue and white works in the 1920s marketplace. Their Shina Kotō-Kinseki-Tenkan (Chinese Antique Fine Ceramic, Metalware and Stone Exhibition) exhibition held at the Osaka Art Club in November 1928 was a massive display, with more than 600 examples of ancient to Fig. 2 Blue and White Tankard with Floral Scroll Design. Qing dynasty works included. There were about 150 examples of Ming and Qing ceramics in the show, with most from the Qing imperial kilns. The Ming dynasty works included only four Wanli era overglaze polychrome Zun vases, with no early Ming blue and white displayed.

When we consider that a succession of top-quality cultural properties flowed out of the imperial palaces during the chaos which preceded and followed the Xinhai Revolution of 1911, it then naturally follows that Yongle and Xuande blue and white began to appear in the marketplace at this time. Nevertheless, this is clearly a later market appearance than the other imperial kiln works, including those of the Qing and latter half of the Ming. This suggests that these early Ming works were primarily closely held within the court and hence there were almost no examples of Yongle and Xuande blue and white in the Qing imperial family collections, such as those in the Yuanmingyuan and other imperial villas.

Their slightly delayed flow out was because they were highly valued, in the same manner as the court's hidden treasures, specifically Northern Song Ru ware, Southern Song imperial kiln ware, Ming dynasty Chenghua ware and Qing dynasty falangcai 琺瑯彩 ware. It seems that Yongle and Xuande blue and white was particularly prized in China among all the ware types and periods of Chinese ceramics.

But then in the 1930s Yongle and Xuande blue and white gradually began to flow into the market. In England, the previously noted Charles Russell collection published in 1931 was pioneering in this regard. A Catalogue of Chinese Pottery and Porcelain in the Collection of Sir Percival David , written by Hobson in

1934, published three pieces of Yongle blue and white and five of Xuande imperial

kiln blue and white. Sir David first visited China in 1924 where he formed close connections with those in the Chinese government at the time. On his second visit in 1927 he acquired a group of around 40 works from the imperial collection. These works were probably Ru ware, Southern Song imperial wares and falangcai. Then when he visited in 1930 and 1931, he is thought to have acquired

important works directly from the Chinese government. Yongle and Xuande works may have been included. It is thought that against this background the collection of Shen Jifu (1871-1952), then the foremost collector of such works in China, flowed into the market. Shen Jifu was a powerful Beijing banker and he leveraged his authority as bank director to acquire works from the collections of the imperial families and aristocracy, including numerous examples from the emperor Qianlong collection, which had been seized as collateral by the bank he headed at the collapse of the Qing dynasty. Today it is surmised that around 1930 Shen began to release his collection following the death of his wife. This is what led to the flow of the large numbers of Yongle and Xuande blue and white then remaining in China out to overseas collections.

From 1935 to 1936 an unprecedented exhibition was held in London, the International Exhibition of Chinese Art. That exhibition included early Ming blue and white works primarily from the Sir David collection, along with those of other English collectors of the time, such as Seligman, Clark and Boode. The fact that the pieces were all superb examples indicates that they had become a central feature of Chinese ceramic collecting in England at the time.

A fascinating example of such feature works at that time was the Chinese ceramic collection of the Frenchman, Ernest Grandidier (1833 -1912). Today his massive collection forms the basis for the MusĂŠe Guimet's Chinese ceramic collection. Here I will note three works, namely, a Yongle Blue and White Pilgrim Flask with Camella Design, a Blue and White Stem Cup with Dragon and Wave Design

with Xuande mark (fig. 4), and a Blue and White Bowl with Floral Scroll Design with Xuande mark. Given Grandidier's death in 1912, we can see that early Ming blue and white was actually taken to France at a considerably earlier date than to England. As previously noted, the Yuanmingyuan Incident of 1860 and the 1900 Boxer Rebellion meant that imperial kiln porcelains flowed out of China. If we further consider that these events involved the French military, then it would seem that they were carried out of China from the latter half of the 19th century

through the beginning of the 20th century. Thus, we can see

how Grandidier's collection of imperial kiln wares was quite early in the overseas collecting of Chinese ceramics.

A. D. Brankston (1909-1941) published his Early Ming Wares of Chingtechen in

1938, and that publication fur-

ther heightened interest in early Ming blue and white. The collecting of these wares gradually solidified, leading to the mature collection of such works today.

Then what about Japan, how were these wares received in Japan?

Compared to England they were brought to Japan at quite a late date.

Early recognition of early Ming blue and white in Japan came in 1934 when Okuda Seiichi published an article titled "Sentoku no sometsuke" in the journal Tōji vol. 6 no. 3. That article indicates that awareness of early Ming blue and white was then low in Japan and research just developing. Later, the 1939 publication Tōki zuroku shina-hen ge, introduced photographs of a very few examples from the Sir David collection, but did not include images of any works in Japanese collections.

Yongle and Xuande blue and white collecting is thought to have begun in Japan during the latter half of the 1930s when it was taken up by the rising Chinese ceramic collectors of the time. The epoque-making catalogue which focused attention on early Ming blue and white was published in 1943, namely Kushi Takushin's Shina min-sho tōji zukan.

Kushi was early to value the high standard of early Ming blue and white and his book presents the Yongle and Xuande imperial kiln blue and white works then in Japanese collections. The works reproduced in this book provide us with an understanding of the state of pre-war era collecting of Yongle and Xuande blue and white.

We know that by this point today's major examples of Yongle and Xuande blue and white in Japanese collections had already entered

the country. One such work is displayed here as pl. I, Blue and White Dish with Melon Vine Design. Formerly in the collection of the Taishō to early Shōwa

businessman and politician Okano Shigezo (1894-1975), it was mixed in with the collection of southeast Asian ceramics that Okano had brought to Japan.

Hirota Fukosai (1897-1973) discovered it in that group and it then passed through the hands of Umezawa Hikotarō (1893 -1969). In addition to Umezawa, other Japanese early Ming blue and white collectors of the time were Inoue Tsuneichi (1906 -1965), Sachio Ryutarō, Itō Sukeatsu (1907-1990), Naitō Tadashi, Takashima Tatsunosuke and Yamamoto Hatsujiro (1887-1951) (see fig. 5). Among these, Umezawa was renowned as the top collector of this ware type throughout the pre and post-war eras. The previously noted Blue and White Basin with Peony Scroll Design today in the Museum Yamato Bunkakan was reproduced in the 1943

publication as in the hands of the renowned collector Ōkura Hisashi (1892-1960).

Other superb Yongle and Xuande blue and white works were also brought to Japan during the pre-war era. The renowned Yongle blue and white work Blue and White Dish with a Pair of Fish and Algae Design (fig. 6) now in the Museum Yamato Bunkakan was discovered in Kyoto in the immediate post-war years of ca. 1946 -1947. Nakamura Tadanori (1915-1998) of the art dealer Shogadō discovered the work in the shopfront of an unknown Kyoto antique dealer. It then passed through the hands of Hirano Kotoken before entering Mayuyama & Co., where Yashiro Yukio (1890 -1975) acquired it upon the instructions of Fig. 6 Blue and White Dish with a Pair of Fish and Algae Design. the Museum Yamato Bunkakan in the summer of 1947. This dish is said to have been owned by the Chinese ceramics scholar Nakao Manzo (1882-1936) who was active in the Taishō to early Shōwa eras. Another work, Blue and White Globular Flask with Peony Scroll Design (fig. 7) with a Xuande mark, is also said to have been

brought to Japan in the 1930s. Blue and White Large Dish with Lotus Bunch Design (fig. 8) in the collection of another Japanese pre-war Chinese ceramics collector, Yokogawa Tamisuke (1864-1945), is another work that was also brought to Japan at an early stage.

Research on early Ming blue and white advanced from the post-war years, around 1950. An example of such was the article by Naitō Tadashi, himself a collector of early Ming blue and white, titled "Artistic Merits of Blue and White Wares of the Early Ming Dynasty" in a 1950 issue of Chawan. Katō Tōkurō's article titled "General Remarks on Wine Utensils" in that same issue's overview of sake wares includes a photograph of the Blue and White Stem Cup with Mythical, Winged Sea Dragon and Wave Design with a Xuande imperial mark (pl. V). This

work is also thought to have been brought to Japan during the pre-war era. Thus these publications focused attention on the Yongle and Xuande works that were brought to Japan and this led to increased collection of such works.

Then in 1956, the Japan Ceramic Society held their exhibition of Yuan and Ming masterpieces in Nihombashi Takashimaya from late April to early May. This was heralded as an exhibition where one could see all of the renowned examples of Yongle and Xuande blue and white primarily brought to Japan in the pre-war era. This marked the beginning of full-scale early Ming blue and white collecting in Japan. Later, in the 1970s and 80s, the superb examples that had been in the Western collections formed in the first half of the 20th century were brought to Japan where they became principle works in the major collections

formed by Idemitsu, Ataka, Matsuoka and Toguri.

Yongle and Xuande blue and white is one of the prize items in today's Chinese ceramics market led by Chinese collectors, and as a result, their prices have gone sky-high. While this type has always had high valuations, their price increase in recent years has been astonishing.

One example is a Blue and White Bowl with Foliate Rim and Fish and Algae Design (fig. 9) which was auctioned by SothebyĘźs in April 2017 in Hong

Kong. There it commanded the highest ever price for an early Ming blue and white work, then close to 229,037,500 HKD. Even given it is a major example of the relatively large number of extant large Yongle blue and white dishes, that represents close to ten times increase over the market's pricing of such works 15 years ago. In this manner, recent market trends have seen a particular emphasis on this ware type.

Yongle and Xuande blue and white porcelains were long locked away in China as important imperial court collection treasures, hidden

in the Forbidden Palace. In the first half of the 20th century such works flowed out of those palaces to other countries. The modern era echoed the palace's high regard for these works, and today they attract even more interest. Surely this evaluation will be unchanged in the future as they remain a core collection item.
