ごあいさつ RYUSENDO GALLERY のグランドオープンを記念しまして、殷（商）の文物の 展示を催すことに致しました。 殷王朝は太陽神の末裔を称する王が治める王国でありました。青銅器は、現在は錆 に覆われ緑色を呈していますが、製作された当初は金色に輝やいていたといわれてい ます。しかし、殷の王は太陽神に近い存在であるという当時の思想を考慮しますと、 その色は金色というより、太陽色という方が適確なのかもしれません。 万物を遍く照らし、農作物を成長させるエネルギーの源たる太陽、その力を宿し、 その力が形を得た姿が青銅器だったのかもしれません。それは太陽神の末裔たる王の 力の象徴でもありました。 本展では包括的に殷の文物を出展するよう心掛けました。近年は殷というと青銅器 という印象がつよすぎるように思われます。それがかえって殷の文明を理解する妨げ になっているのではないかと考えたからです。 殷の実在を証明し、実像を解き明かす鍵となる甲骨文字、殷やそれに先行する王朝 である夏の母体ともなった中原龍山文化、その流れを汲んだ黒陶および灰陶、メソポ タミア・エジプトなどの文明を想起させる大理石の器物、そして同じく白という色を 特別視していたが由に作られた白陶や象牙の品々、新石器時代から高度に発展し中華 文明を語るうえで避けては通れない玉器。 以上のような文物を可能な限り出陳し、殷代美術の全貌に迫ります。来場者の方々 がより鮮明に殷の文明を思い描く一助になれば、それに勝る歓びはございません。

Preface

Upon the occasion of the grand opening of the Ryusendo Gallery, it gives us great pleasure

to present an exhibition of Yin (Shang) dynasty works.

The Shang dynasty was a kingdom ruled by kings said to be descended from the solar deity.

While today the bronze vessels the Shang created are coated in a green patina, apparently when made these bronzes were gleaming and golden. Given that period's belief in this solar deity/king connection, more so than gold, we should probably consider their gleam to have been sun-like in color and brilliance.

The sun shines on all things, providing the energy for crops and other plants to grow. These

bronzes may have been created in forms meant to house that power, as manifestations of such power. Thus, they also became symbols of the power of the kings, the solar deity's descendants.

In this exhibition we have striven to provide an inclusive display of the Shang culture and

its artifacts. It seems as if in recent years the term Shang has been too strongly linked with bronzes.

In order to understand the Shang culture, we must not neglect the other arts and cultural heritage they produced.

In addition to bronzes, oracle bone inscriptions also stand as witness to the realities of the

Shang and provide an understanding of that realm. The Central Plains Longshan culture—the formative ground for both the Shang and the preceding Xia dynasty —produced black pottery and gray pottery, along with white marble works reminiscent of those created by Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations. Pottery and animal horn wares created thanks to the special place given to pure white forms, and of course jade, the pinnacle achievement of the Neolithic period which must always be considered in any discussion of Chinese civilization.

We hope that this exhibition will convey the full spectrum of Shang dynasty art through

its display of the greatest possible range of the above-mentioned forms. It is our fervent hope that this selection and display will provide all exhibition visitors with a clearer understanding of Shang culture in all of its glory.

殷墟への招待 谷 豊信

殷の青銅器には異様な迫力がある。中国の他の時代のみならず、他の地域の 工芸品と比較しても、それは歴然としている。そうした青銅器がなぜ生み出さ れたのか、大きな謎である。とはいえ謎を解く扉は開かれている。それは河南 省安陽市に残る殷墟である。殷墟は 2006 年に世界遺産に登録され、前後して 遺跡の整備も進んでいる。コロナ禍により海外渡航がままならない今日この頃 であるが、蔓延が終息して殷墟訪問が可能となる日が一日も早く来ることを祈 願しつつ、殷墟の概要と研究課題を思いつくままに紹介してみたい。

殷墟の範囲 河南省安陽市は、中国の首都北京の南南東約 500km、河南省の省都 である鄭州市の北北東約 100km の位置にある。安陽市は華北平原の縁 に位置し、北と西は山地となっている。安陽では 19 世紀末以降、高度 な技術で作られた見事な青銅器や玉器、亀の甲羅や獣の骨（甲骨）に 文字（甲骨文字）を刻んだものが多数出土しており、ここが『史記』 などに記された殷墟と考えられている（実は『史記』には「殷虚」と 書かれているのであるが、ここでは現在通用している殷墟で統一する ことにする）。 挿図 1 は諸書を参考に筆者が作製した殷墟の略図である。安陽市内 を北京から鄭州を経て広州に至る鉄道（京広線）が南北に走っている。 近年は京広線の東にさらに高速鉄道や高速道路も建設され、交通の便 えんが

は良好である。安陽市を西から東へ貫いて黄河の支流である洹河が流 れている。洹河の両岸に世界遺産の公開施設である「殷墟博物苑」「殷 墟王陵遺址」という二つの遺跡公園（挿図 1 のＡ、Ｂ）が整備され、 殷王朝の繁栄のさまを偲ぶことができる。実は世界遺産に登録された のは、二つの遺跡公園のそれぞれの外周を含む、もう少し広い範囲な のであるが、煩雑になるのでここでは省略する。 世界遺産登録地域を含む、挿図に破線で示した東西約 6km、南北約

5km、総面積約 30㎢の範囲が、1961 年に中国政府が指定した殷墟遺跡の保護 範囲である。近年はこの保護範囲の外でも殷時代の遺跡が多数発見されており、 殷墟の範囲は挿図に点線で示した約 40㎢とすべきであるとの意見も出されてい る。 これまで殷墟で発見された遺跡には、大型建物、一般の住居、各種工芸品の 工房、甲骨埋納坑、そして大小の墓など様々あるが、全てを盛り込むことは不 可能なので、図では代表的なものだけ表示した。

殷王朝の歴史 殷王朝の歴史は『史記』や『竹書紀年』などの歴史書や、甲骨文・金文（青 銅器の銘文）という出土文字資料、そして考古学的発掘調査の成果などを総合 して研究されている。まだ不明の部分は多く、研究者の見解が異なる点も少な くないが、その概要をまとめると以下のようになろう。 けつおう

『史記』によれば夏王朝の桀王は暴虐であっ 殷王朝は前 1600 年頃に成立した。 たため、人望のあった湯が桀王を滅ぼし、殷王朝初代の王となったという。殷 はく

王朝前期の中心地、亳は現在の河南省鄭州市であり、鄭州市には一辺 2km 弱 の長方形をなす殷時代の城壁が残っている。こののち中期になると殷王朝は衰 えたびたび遷都したと伝えられているが不明の部分が多い。前 13 世紀ころに 始まる殷後期の重要な遺跡が河南省安陽の殷墟である。この地に繁栄をもたら ぶてい

したのは第 22 代の王である武丁と考えられており、甲骨文字も今のところ武 ちゅうおう

丁の時代のものが最古である。『史記』は、第 30 代の紂王が暴虐で、諸侯の支 持を集めた周の武王が殷王朝を滅ぼして周王朝を立てたと伝える。その年代は 諸説あるが､ 最近では前 11 世紀後半とみるのが一般的である。 『史記』は、殷王朝滅亡後、王朝の廃墟が殷墟と呼ばれたことを記す。さらに、 こうう

始皇帝の死後、秦に反抗して挙兵した項羽が、前 207 年に「洹水の南、殷墟の しょうかん

あたり」で秦の将軍章邯を降服させたと記しており、そのころまでは殷墟とい う地名が残っていたことが判る。しかし、殷墟という地名はその後の歴史の中 で消えてしまった。

殷か商か ここまで筆者は周が滅ぼした王朝を殷と呼んできた。中国古代史の基本文献 である『史記』は王朝名を殷とする。日本の学界の大勢は殷を採用しており、 学校教科書もこれによっている。 一方、現代中国ではこの王朝を商と呼んでいる。欧米でも Shang（商）が優 勢で、最近では Yin（殷）と表記するものを見ることはまずない。ただし、王 朝の最後の首都が殷にあったとの説をとるので、殷墟は殷墟である。 中国で『史記』よりも古い時代に書かれたと考えられる文献には、周の前の 王朝は殷とも商とも書かれており、なかには殷商あるいは商殷とするものもあ る。また司馬遷以降の学者も、殷とも商とも言ってきた。殷も商も由緒正しい 名称であり、どちらかが誤りというものではない。 とはいえ、王朝の名前として学問的にどちらが適切かということは考えなけ ればならない。文献の記事は錯綜しており、同時代の文字資料である甲骨文や 西周時代初期の金文を中心に検討することが必要である。 甲骨文・金文研究の大家である松丸道雄氏は、以下のように論じている。甲 骨文の商は、王朝後期に「大邑商」などの形で現われるが、これは王朝の首邑（首 都・王都）の名であり、国名ではない。西周初期金文に商とならんで殷が登場 するが、この殷は周が滅ぼした相手の支配の及んだ全域を指した語であり、国 ごう

名であった。文献は王朝の前期・中期の首邑の名称として亳・囂など多くの名 称を上げているが、商はない。よって前・中期の王朝名をも後期の首邑名であ る商によって称するのは理解しがたく、国名としては唯一伝えられている殷を 用いるべきである、と。筆者は松丸氏の説に説得力を覚えるので、ここでは王 朝名を殷として話をすすめる。

殷墟の発見と調査 殷墟がふたたび歴史に登場したのは、甲骨文字の発見に由来する。19 世紀 末に中国の学者が、古い動物の骨のなかに古代の文字らしいものが刻まれたも のがあることに気付いた。研究によって甲骨文字は殷王室で占いに用いられた 文字と分かり、20 世紀初頭にはその出土地が河南省安陽の小屯村一帯である ことが判明した。この小屯村がまさに洹水（洹河）のすぐ南に位置することか ら、ここが『史記』「項羽本紀」に記された殷墟であると断定されたのである。 学者や好事家が甲骨を買い求めたため、殷墟では盗掘が盛んになった。殷墟で は青銅器や玉器なども出土することも知られ、欧米や日本の美術愛好家が競っ

て高値で購入するにいたり、盗掘が はげしくなっていった。

1912 年に清朝が倒れ、中華民国 が成立した。1928 年に中華民国政 府は科学研究を主導する中央研究院 を設立し、その一部門として歴史語 言研究所を組織した。この研究所が 最初に注目したのが殷墟であり、早 くもこの年に第一回の発掘調査を実 施した。こののち、紆余曲折をへな がらも研究所を中心に計 15 回に及 ぶ発掘が続けられた。洹河の南の小 屯村では甲骨が出土し、大型建物の 挿図2 1935年の王陵発掘の状況. 「梁思永稿・高去尋輯補『1217号大墓』 中央研究院歴史語言研究所, 1968年」 より転載.

遺構が調査された。洹河の北の西北 崗（現在の殷墟王陵遺址一帯）では 王墓と目される大形墓の発掘が行なわれた（挿図 2）。 このように大きな成果が上がりつつあったが、1937 年 7 月 7 日に日中戦争 が始まり、発掘は中断した。日中戦争は 1945 年に終わったが、翌 1946 年に中 国では国民党と共産党の内戦が始まり、敗れた国民党は殷墟出土品はじめ多く 文物を携えて台湾に逃れた。このおり、殷墟発掘参加者も台湾へ逃れた者と大 陸に留まる者に分かれることになった。 台湾に遷った歴史語言研究所は、移送した遺物と記録をもとに戦前の発掘報 告書の刊行を行なっており、出土遺物の一部を同研究所の博物館で展示してい る。 一方大陸では 1949 年に中華人民共和国が成立し、中国科学院考古研究所が 創設された（現在は中国社会科学院考古研究所）。考古研究所は殷墟でも盛ん に調査を実施し、大きな成果を上げた。建国後の 10 年の調査成果に基づいて、 中国政府は 1961 年に挿図 1 に破線で示した範囲を保護すべき殷墟の範囲に指 定した。1976 年に考古研究所が発掘した婦好墓は未盗掘で、出土した厖大な 数の青銅器と玉器は、殷王朝の繁栄ぶりを如実に示した。前後して青銅器鋳造 工房や甲骨埋納遺跡の調査も進み、殷墟の地理的広がりとその内部の構造につ いても認識が深まった。 以上のような、戦前以来の調査と研究の成果が評価され、2006 年に殷墟が 世界遺産に登録されることになったのである。

宮殿宗廟区 現在、殷墟博物苑（挿図 1 のＡ）がある一帯を学者は宮殿 宗廟区と呼んでいる。宮殿宗廟区は、洹河が東から南へ流路 を変える角の部分に位置する。ここで戦前以来、大小 100 基 以上の建物跡が発見された。建物群は、北と東は洹河によっ て、西と南は人工の堀によって周囲と距てられた、南北約

1000m、東西約 700m の範囲にある。その面積は 70 万㎡ほど、 東京ドーム 15 個分、東京国立博物館の敷地の７倍という広 さである。 筆者が最初に訪れた 1981 年秋、この一帯は畑であった（挿

図 3）が、1980 年代後半から殷墟博物苑という名の遺跡公園 として整備が進んだ。現在は、いくつかの建物が復元され、 一部の遺構はガラス越しに見ることができるようになってい る。敷地内には殷墟出土品を展示する殷墟博物館もある。 挿図 4 は世界遺産登録後の 2010 年に訪れたとき撮影した 写真で、乙二十と名づけられた遺構の本来の姿を復元した建 物が 3 分の 2 程できていた。筆者訪問後この写真の右側に更 に残りの 3 分の 1 が加わり、長さ 51m の建物の復元が完成 した。復元途中のこの写真からも、当時の大形の建物の威容 が感じられる。現在では殷時代にはすでに瓦があったとみる 研究者もいるが、殷墟の発掘では瓦は発見されておらず、復

元建物の屋根も植物の茎で覆っている。 宮殿宗廟区では、建物跡のほか、さまざまな遺構が発見さ れている。まず、甲骨を大量に集めて埋納した遺構がある。 これまで発見された文字を刻んだ甲骨はほとんどが安陽から出土しており、そ 。甲骨文の内容が殷の王室 れも宮殿宗廟区一帯に集中している（挿図 1 の△） の占いであるだけに、宮殿宗廟区は王朝の宗教儀礼が行なわれた場所であった ことを思わせる。また建物の周囲には多数の穴が掘られ人骨が埋められていた。 その多くは頭蓋骨がなく、斬首された犠牲者の骨であることが明らかである。 こうしたことから、この大形建物群は、殷王が住んだ王宮と先祖を祀る建物 が混在した、宗教的色彩が濃い特殊な場所であったと考えられている。この一 帯が宮殿宗廟区という分かりにくい名で呼ばれる由縁である。 なお有名な婦好墓も殷墟博物苑内にあり、復元された墓壙を見学することが できる。婦好は、この地に繁栄をもたらした武丁の后と考えられる。

王陵区 洹河の北、宮殿宗廟区の西北に西北崗と呼ばれる場所があ る。ここで戦前に発掘されたのは、地上から 10m あまり下 まで掘り下げて、穴の底に 200 〜 300㎡の墓室を造り、そこ に柩と多数の青銅器や玉器などの副葬品や殉葬の犠牲者を埋 めた大規模な墓であった（挿図 2）。ただ墓はみな盗掘され、 残っていた副葬品は多くはなかった。そうした大形墓は、途 中で造営が放棄されたと推定されるものも含めて計 11 基発 挿図5 殷墟王陵遺址公園 発掘された王陵の位置と形を生け垣で示している （2010年筆者撮影）

見された。戦後、さらに同規模の墓（武官大墓）が発掘され、 これを加えると 12 基となる。

1981 年に筆者が訪れたときは普通の畑が広がっているだ けであり、発掘が行なわれた場所を知る手がかりすらなかった。現在は「殷墟 王陵遺址」という名の遺跡公園になり（挿図 1 のＢ）、生け垣によって 12 基の 大墓の位置と形を示している（挿図 5）。また武官大墓の隣に武官大墓の墓壙 が復元されていて、墓の規模を体感することができる。 これらの大墓は、殷時代の他の墓より格段に大きく、殷王の陵であることは 容易に想像される。造営が中途で放棄されたとみられる墓こそ、まさに最後の 紂王のために造られつつあった陵ではないかと推測する研究者もいる。 王陵の墓壙内では、多くの頭蓋骨が並べられたり投げ込まれたりした状態で 発見された。これに対応するように、王陵区内では、首無しの遺体をまとめて 埋めた殉人坑（挿図 6）が多数発見された。人を斬首して、王の墓に捧げる残 忍な儀礼が繰り返されたことをまざまざと示している。

青銅器鋳造工房 安陽市内では、これまで青銅器をはじめさまざまな工芸品を制作する工房の 遺跡が発掘されてきた。ここでは読者の関心が高いであろう青銅器鋳造工房を 取り上げる。戦前・戦後に調査されたおもな青銅器鋳造工房の地点を挿図 1 に ▲で記しておいた。 このなかで最大の鋳造遺跡は 5 万㎡に達する。鋳造遺跡では、青銅器の土製 の鋳型（挿図 7）を作り、これに溶けた銅を流し込んで鋳造し、さらに砥石で 挿図6 王陵区内の殉人坑 一つの坑に首のない遺体を多数埋葬している （2010年筆者撮影）

磨いて仕上げたことを物語る遺構や遺物が発見されている。王宮や王陵の近く で、青銅器を製作していたのであり、王朝によって厳格に管理されていたこと は疑いない。鋳造遺跡内では獣を殺して埋めた穴も発見された。鋳造は危険な

作業であり、犠牲を捧げて安全を祈ったのであろう。 さらには鋳造に従事した工人を葬ったと思われる墓も 発見されており、外界から遮断された狭い世界で、一 生涯、青銅器生産だけに専念した集団がいたことを思 わせる。殷の青銅器をみるとき念頭に置かねばならな い点である。

えんほく

洹北商城 ここまで説明してきたのは、おもに殷後期、実年代 では前 13 世紀頃から前 11 世紀頃にかけて営まれた遺

跡である。 ところが 20 世紀末になり、従来知られてきた殷墟 の遺構とは、時期も性格もやや異なる遺構が洹河の北 で発見され、洹北商城と命名された。 洹北商城は、1961 年指定の殷墟の遺跡保護範囲の東北に位置する。まだ部分 的にしか調査されていないが、一辺約 2km のほぼ方形の城壁で囲まれ、内部 には宮殿とみられる大形建築遺構があり、青銅器鋳造工房もある。時代は殷後 期より古い殷中期に位置づけられている。 「城壁で囲まれ」と書いたが、発掘 調査の所見によれば城壁は未完成で、工事の途中で放棄したものと推定されて いる。 洹北商城の発見後、それまでに調査された殷墟遺跡との関係が検討され、洹 北商城が使用された時期に宮殿宗廟区や王陵区の一部の建物や墓が造営され始 めたが、何等かの事情で洹北商城は放棄され、その後、殷後期になって、宮殿 宗廟区や王陵区の造営が本格化したと考えられるようになってきている。『史 記』が伝えるたびたびの遷都と関係するようであるが、詳しい経緯はまだ解明 されていない。

殷墟の性格 むすびにかえて 殷王室では多くの人々を犠牲に供する残酷な祭祀が行なわれた。そうした祭 祀の重要な構成要素として、王朝の厳格な管理のもと閉鎖的な工人集団によっ て青銅器は作られたのである。殷の青銅器がもつ異様な迫力の背景には、こう した状況があった。

最後に、殷墟とはどのような性格をもつ場所であったが考えてみたい。

1980 年代ころまで、殷墟は殷王朝後期の都であると多くの研究者が信じて きた。殷後期において殷墟は他とは隔絶した規模をもつ最大の遺跡であり、王 陵があり、殷王室の占いの文字を刻んだ甲骨もほとんどここだけで出土してい るからである。 ところがその後各地で殷時代の遺跡調査が進むと、河南省鄭州市の鄭州商城 のような、平面が方形ないし長方形の城壁で囲まれた都市遺跡の例が増えてき た。それらは城壁の方向が、東西南北から時計回りに数度ずれるという点で共 通しており、洹北商城も例外ではない。 これを殷王朝の拠点的な都市の一般的形状とすると、城壁が発見されていな い殷後期の殷墟は王城ではないのではないかという疑いが強くなった。城壁を もった殷の王城はどこか別のところにあり、殷墟は王を葬り、亡き王を祀るこ とに特化した宗教センターであった可能性を、松丸道雄氏は 1980 年代以来指 摘している。 中国でもこうした議論がないわけではないが、殷墟遺跡を王朝の首都「大邑 商」とみる意見が主流である。なんといっても同時代の殷の王城である可能性 のある遺跡がまったく見つかっていないという事実は大きい。 殷墟にはなお謎が多く、今後の研究の進展が期待される。それにつけても、 コロナ禍が収まり、現地を訪れて最新の研究成果を吸収できる日が一日も早く 来ることを願ってやまない。

An Invitation to Yin Xu Tani Toyonobu

[Translator's note: The historical period often referred to in English and Chinese as the Shang (商) dynasty is commonly known as the Yin (殷) dynasty in Japan. This catalogue uses the term Shang dynasty in line with common English usage, except in this essay, in which the author explains his preference for the term Yin dynasty.]

Yin dynasty ritual bronzes are strangely compelling, even in comparison to decorative arts from other Chinese periods or other regions. The great mystery is, why were such bronzes created. Thus said, there is one excavation site which might help us solve this mystery. That is the site of Yin Xu, located in Anyang city, Henan province, China.

Yin Xu was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, and ruins and other elements of the site were also prepared for public access around that time. Today, as Covid-19 has halted international travel, I pray that the day comes soon when the pandemic has ended, and it is possible once again to visit Yin Xu. In the interim, the following is my brief introduction to Yin Xu and my thoughts on some of the research questions surrounding the site and its interpretation.

The Scope of Yin Xu Anyang city, Henan province, is approximately 500 km south-southeast of the Chinese capital Beijing, and is about 100 km north-northeast of Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province. Anyang is situated near the edge of the North China Plain, with mountains to its north and west. examples of technically superb bronzes, jades, tortoise shells and bones with inscriptions have been excavated at Anyang. These are thought to have come from the site that Sima Qian mentioned in his Shiji (史記), a history of China written ca. 1st century BC . (While Sima Qian used the characters 殷虚 for the Yin Xu site name, today the characters 殷墟 are commonly used and this catalogue follows that contemporary custom.)

After referring to several books, I produced a plan of Yin Xu, shown here as fig. 1. The Beijing-Guangzhou railway line runs north-south through Anyang city on its way from Beijing to Guangzhou via Zhengzhou. In recent years transportation has been further improved by the addition of a high-speed rail line and freeway along the eastern side of the Beijing-Guangzhou line. The Huan River (also known as the Anyang River), a tributary of the Yellow River, runs east-west through Anyang city. Two parks housing the World Heritage Site ruins are found on both banks of the Huan River -- called the Yin Xu Garden-Museum and the Royal Tomb Area of Yin Xu -- appear as A and B on the fig. 1 plan. These sites are set up to show the splendor of the Yin dynasty. In fact, the Anyang Yin Ruins World Heritage Site designation covers a larger area, extending beyond those two historic site parks, but I have omitted them here to avoid confusion.

As indicated by the dashed line in fig. 1, the area, approximately 6 km east-west, 5 km north-south, for a total land area of approximately 30 km2 , is the State Priority Protected Site designated by Chinese government in 1961 and the area includes the World Heritage Site. In recent years numerous Yin dynasty sites have been discovered outside the protected area, and there are some who believe that the actual Yin Xu scale is about 40 km2, as indicated by the dotted line on fig. 1.

The sites discovered up until now at Yin Xu include large structures, ordinary residences, workshops to produce various types of decorative arts, underground oracle bone caches, and small and large tombs. On my plan I have only included representative examples, as it would be impossible to fit all of the discovered sites on this plan.

History of the Yin Dynasty Research on the history of the Yin dynasty has progressed through the study of history chronicles such as the Shiji and the Zhushu jinian (竹書紀年); excavated texts, such as oracle bone inscriptions and bronze inscriptions, and archaeological excavation reports. While many aspects remain unclear -- and there are a considerable number of points upon which scholars do not agree -- the following is a summary overview of the history of the Yin dynasty.

The Yin dynasty was founded about 1600 BC. According to the Shiji, the tyranny of Jie Wang of the Xia dynasty led a popular figure named Tang to overthrow Jie Wang and become the first Yin dynasty king. An area called Bo was the center of the early Yin dynasty period and was located in present-day Zhengzhou city, Henan province. An approximately just under 2 km2 rectangular-shaped Yin dynasty city wall remains in Zhengzhou city. The waning fortunes of the following middle period of the Yin dynasty meant that the dynasty moved their capital several times, though many facts remain unclear. Yin Xu in Anyang, Henan province is an important site of the late Yin dynasty, a period that began around the 13th century BC. It is thought that the 22nd king of the dynasty, Wu Ding, brought this land to its full glory, and at present, the oldest extant oracle bone script dates from Wu Ding's reign. The Shiji states that the 30th king, Zhou Wang, was a tyrant, and Wu Wang of the Zhou overthrew the Yin dynasty and founded the Zhou dynasty. Various theories exist regarding the timing of that event, but most scholars recently consider the latter half of the 11th century BC to be the most likely date.

The Shiji notes that after the fall of the Yin dynasty, the old dynasty site was called the Yin Xu, literally Yin historical site. After the death of Shihuangdi, the Shiji further states that in 207 BC, Xiangyu, who raised an army to oppose the Qin, forced the Qin general Zhang Han to surrender "south of the Huan River, near Yin Xu," indicating that the Yin Xu place name had survived to that point. But then the Yin Xu place name disappeared from later histories.

Yin or Shang?

Up until this point in my essay I have referred to the dynasty overthrown by the Zhou as the Yin. The fundamental document in the history of ancient China, the Shiji, calls this dynasty the Yin (殷). The majority of Japanese scholarly world uses the term Yin, and it appears as such in Japanese textbooks.

Conversely, in present-day China this dynasty is called the Shang (商).

The West also favors the term Shang, with the term Yin almost never seen today.

However, given the theory that Yin was the dynasty's final capital, then Yin Xu, literally the ruins of Yin, remains the term used for the site.

In documents that in China are thought to pre-date the Shiji, the

names Yin (殷) and Shang (商) are used to describe the dynasty that preceded the Zhou. Some even combine them, stating Yin-Shang (殷商) or Shang-Yin (商殷).

Scholars after Sima Qian also called them either Yin or Shang. Thus, both the Yin and Shang names have proper lineage, and hence neither can be called incorrect.

That said, however, we must consider which dynasty name is appropriate in scholarly terms. The comments made in the literature are complicated, and thus we must focus our inquiry on the then contemporary written sources, namely oracle bone inscriptions and early Western Zhou dynasty bronze inscriptions.

Matsumaru Michio is a major figure in the Japanese study of oracle bone inscriptions and bronze inscription research. These are his thoughts on this matter. The term Shang mentioned in oracle bone inscriptions appears in the form of character combinations such as "Daiyishang" (大邑商), literally "great capital Shang," in other words, the capital was named Shang, not the country.

In early Western Zhou dynasty bronze inscriptions, Shang and Yin appear together, with the term Yin signifying the entire region under the dominion of the opponent that the Zhou defeated, in other words, Yin was a country name.

In the literature, various names appear as the capitals of the early and middle periods of the dynasty, such as Bo and Xiao, but the name Shang does not appear.

Thus, it is hard to understand naming the dynasty's early and middle periods as Shang, the name of the late period capital. This means that Yin is the only name that should be used consistently as the country name of this dynasty. I believe that Matsumaru's explanation is convincing and thus I will use Yin as the dynasty name in this essay.

The Discovery of Yin Xu and Its Study Yin Xu reappeared in the history books thanks to the discovery of oracle bone script. Chinese scholars in the late 19th century noticed ancient character-like writing on old animal bones. Their studies indicated that the Yin royal household used oracle bone script to write divination-related texts. At the beginning of the 20th century, they determined that these bones had been excavated in a cluster

of sites at Xiaotuncun, Anyang, Henan. Given that this Xiaotuncun was located directly south of the Huan River, scholars have concluded that this is the Yin Xu

noted in the "Xiangyu benji" section of the Shiji. Because scholars and aficionados wanted to buy oracle bones, there were spates of grave robbing and thefts at Yin Xu. Bronzes and jades are also known to have been excavated at Yin Xu. As Western and Japanese art aficionados competed to buy them at high prices, the illicit digs increased tremendously.

The Qing dynasty fell in 1912, and the Republic of China was

China government established the Academia Sinica to direct scientific research in the country, with one section called the Institute of History and Philology, a research center for the study of history and languages. This research institute first focused on Yin Xu, and quickly carried out their first archaeological investigation of the site that same year. Later, while various twists and turns occurred in the study of the site, a total of 15 archaeological digs conducted primarily by the research institute have been conducted at Yin Xu. Oracle bones have been excavated at Xiaotuncun, south of the Huan River, and the remains of large-scale structures there have also been surveyed. Xibeigang to the north of the Huan River is the location of the present-day Royal Tomb Area of Yin Xu. This site has seen the excavation of a large-scale tomb thought to be that of Yin kings (fig. 2).

These studies produced a stream of major results, but excavations were halted when the Sino-Japanese War broke out on July 7, 1937. The War ended in 1945, and the following year the civil war broke out between the Nationalist and Communist forces, with the Nationalist forces losing and fleeing to Taiwan with a trove of cultural properties, including those excavated at Yin Xu. This also meant that the scholars involved in the Yin Xu archaeological excavations were split, with some fleeing to Taiwan and others remaining on the continent.

The Institute of History and Philology was moved to Taiwan and

published excavation reports based on the materials and records brought to the island, with some of the excavated items displayed in the research institute's museum. Conversely, after the 1949 establishment of the People's Republic of China on the continent, the new government founded the Institute of Archeology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (present-day Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences). The Institute of Archaeology has carried out numerous excavations at Yin Xu with great results. Based on the decade of studies conducted after the founding of the country, in 1961 the Chinese government designated the area indicated by the dashed lines on fig. 1 as the Yin Xu site that must be preserved. In 1976, the Institute of Archaeology excavated the previously undisturbed Tomb of Fu Hao, excavating a massive number of bronzes and jades from the site which fully convey the splendor of the Yin dynasty. Around this time excavations continued at bronze casting workshop sites and underground oracle bone caches, which deepened our understanding of the geographic scope of Yin Xu and its internal structure and organization.

As indicated above, the evaluation of the pre-war to current research and excavation results led to the UNESCO designation of Yin Xu as a World Heritage Site in 2006.

The Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area Today some scholars refer to the Yin Xu Garden-Museum precinct (A on fig. 1) as the Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area. This Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area is located in the bend created by the shift in the Huan River flow from eastward to southern. More than 100 large and small structure ruins have been discovered in this precinct since the pre-war period. This group of building is bounded to north and east by the Huan River, and to the west and south by man-made moats, creating a precinct that is approximately 1000m north/south, and 700m east/west in measurement. That land area, approximately 700,000m2, is 15 times the size of Tokyo Dome, and seven times the size of the

Tokyo National Museum grounds.

I first visited the site in the autumn of 1981. The area was farm fields at the time (fig. 3), but work proceeded in the latter half of the 1980s on creating the Yin Xu Garden-Museum. Today a number of the structures have been

reconstructed, and a section of the ruins have been enclosed in glass so that visitors can view them. The Museum-Exhibition Hall within the precinct displays some of the items excavated from Yin Xu sites.

Fig. 4 is a photograph I took when I visited the site in 2010, after the World Heritage Site designation. At the time approximately two-thirds of the structure called Yiershi had been reconstructed. right side of the structure was restored, and today the entire 51-meter-long building has been fully reconstructed. Even

from my mid-reconstruction process photo seen here as fig. 4, we can get a sense of the original appearance of this building.

Some scholars today believe that roof tiles were already in use during the Yin dynasty, but no tiles have been discovered in the Yin Xu excavations. Hence the restored building's roof was thatched with plant materials.

In addition to traces of buildings, the ruins of various other human activity and structures were discovered within the Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area. bones. Most of the tortoise shells carved with lettering that have been discovered so far have been excavated at Anyang, primarily from the Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area

(△ in fig. 1). Given that these oracle bone inscriptions all relate to Yin royal household-related divination, it is thought that the Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area was the place where the dynasty's religious rituals were conducted.

Numerous holes had been dug around the buildings and human bones were buried in these holes. Most of these finds lack skulls, indicating that they are the bones of beheaded sacrificial victims.

From these factors, it is thought that these large structures were a mixture of the royal palace where the Yin kings lived and the buildings where rites to the ancestors were conducted, in other words, a special district heavily religious in nature. This is why this precinct has been given the unwieldly name, Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area.

The famous Fu Hao tomb is also located within the Yin Xu Garden-Museum. The reconstructed burial chamber can be visited. Fu Hao is thought to have been the consort of Wu Ding, the king who brought prosperity to this area.

Royal Tomb Precinct North of the Huan River, to the northwest of the Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area, there is a place called Xibeigang, site of the royal cemetery. The section of this site excavated during the pre-World War II period was dug about

10 meters down from ground level, with a 200 –300m2 tomb

chamber found at the bottom of the holes dug. This large-scale tomb contained the coffin, numerous bronzes, jades and other grave goods, along with the bodies of sacrificial victims (fig. 2) However, this grave had been fully plundered, with not many grave goods left. A total of 11 large-scale tombs were discovered in that area, including some that were thought to have been abandoned during their construction. After World War II, a similar scale tomb (Wuguan damu) was excavated, bringing the total to 12 tombs.

When I visited the site in 1981, the area was an expanse of ordinary farm fields, there was nothing to suggest that excavations had occurred at the site. Today this area is a park called the Royal Tomb Area of Yin Xu (B on fig. 1), with hedges indicating the shape and position of the 12 large underground tombs (fig. 5). The burial chamber of the Wuguan damu has been reconstructed next to the Wuguan damu site, allowing visitors to experience the scale of the tomb structure.

These large tombs were of a greater scale than other Yin dynasty tombs, and thus we can easily imagine that they were the royal tombs. There are some scholars who believe that the tomb that appears to have been abandoned mid construction may have been intended for the final king of the dynasty, Zhou Wang.

The burial chambers of the royal tombs were discovered with large numbers of skulls, either lined up or scattered. Corresponding to these skulls, the royal tomb precinct includes a sacrificial victims pit (fig. 6) where the headless

bodies were all buried together. These bodies show that a succession of victims was cruelly beheaded in ritual offerings to the king's tomb.

discuss the bronze foundries, given what I presume is great interest in such among the readers of this essay.

The locations of most of the bronze foundries excavated in the prewar and postwar era are marked ▲on fig. 1.

The largest of these foundry sites measures as great as 50,000m2.

Discovered facilities and items show how the clay molds (fig. 7) for bronzes were made, molten bronze poured into the molds and fired, and finally finished by polishing with whetstones. Undoubtedly the fact that bronzes were made close to the royal palace and royal tombs indicates that the royal family strictly managed their production process. Holes were also discovered within the foundry precincts where animals had been killed and buried. These were likely sacrificial offerings made as prayers for safety in the face of the dangerous casting process.

Graves were also discovered which are thought to have been for foundry workers, indicating that it was a narrow realm cut off from the outside world, a place where a group of workers focused their whole lives on bronze vessel production. These are factors to keep in mind when we view Yin bronzes.

Huanbei Shang City Above, I have primarily explained the sites that were built during the late Yin dynasty, ca. 13th century BC to ca. 11th century BC. However, at the end of the 20th century another site was discovered north of the Huan River, a site whose structures differed somewhat in terms of period and character from those at Yin Xu. This site was named Huanbei Shang City (洹北商城).

Huanbei Shang City is positioned to the northeast of the 1961-designated Yin Xu Protected Site quadrant. Still only partially studied, it is enclosed by a square array of city walls, with each side of the array measuring approximately 2 km. Within that enclosure there is the site of a large structure thought to be a

royal palace and a bronze foundry. The site has been dated to slight older than the late Yin dynasty, namely to the mid Yin dynasty. While I stated, "enclosed by city walls," excavation reports indicate that those walls were never finished, and it is posited that they were abandoned mid construction.

After the discovery of Huanbei Shang City, investigations were made regarding its connection to the previously excavated Yin Xu sites, and it seems that during the time of the Huanbei Shang City, work was starting on some of the buildings and tombs in the Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area and the Royal Tombs precinct. But then, for some reason, Huanbei Shang City was abandoned, and it is thought that later, in the late Yin dynasty, the full construction of the various facilities and structures in the Palace and Royal Ancestral Shrines Area and the royal tomb precinct began. This seems to be related to the frequent moving of the royal capital as mentioned in the Shiji, but details of the process or timing is not known.

Yin Xu's Character, in Place of a Conclusion Brutal rites were held in the Yin king's palace, including the sacrifice of many human victims. Bronze vessels, an important element in these rituals, were made by a sequestered group of artisans under the strict supervision of the royal household. This situation formed part of the background of what we see today as the strange, compelling force of the Yin bronzes.

Finally, I would like to consider the nature of the place Yin Xu. Up until around the 1980s, many scholars believed that Yin Xu was the capital of the late Yin dynasty. Within the late Yin dynasty, Yin Xu was the largest of the sites found, indeed, of a scale that completely outstripped the other sites. It had royal tombs and the majority of oracle bones incised with divinations regarding the Yin royal household have been excavated from this site.

However, excavations of other Yin dynasty sites in various regions have proceeded, and with an increased number of sites, such as the Zhengzhou Shang

City in Zhengzhou city, Henan province, revealing capital city sites surrounded by square or rectangular wall constructs. The positioning of these city walls all share the characteristic of being shifted clockwise slightly off the cardinal direction orientation, and Huanbei Shang City is no exception to this rule. Doubts have increased that if this city wall-enclosed construct is the general form of Yin dynasty focal cities, then late Yin dynasty Yin Xu, for which no city walls have been discovered, may not have been a royal city. In other words, since the 1980s Matsumaru Michio has suggested the possibility that the Yin royal city with city walls existed elsewhere, and that Yin Xu was a special religious center where the Yin kings were buried and where rituals were held for the deceased kings.

This is not to say that such a theory does not exist in China, but the predominant theory there is that the Yin Xu site was the previously mentioned "Dayishang", the capital of the dynasty. But no matter what we say, the fact remains that we have yet to discover another site that could have been the Yin royal city of that period.

Many unsolved puzzles remain about Yin Xu, and further research on the subject is needed. And in the end, I pray daily for the time when the Covid-19 situation is under control, and when we can once again visit the site and fully partake of its latest research findings.

わが国を中心とした殷代青銅器の蒐集と評価 川島 公之

青銅器の神髄といえる殷代の作品は、現代では計り知れない、高い独創性と 美意識を有している。 この中国芸術の源流ともいうべき殷代青銅器が、長い歴史のなかでどのよう に評価され、また近代になりどのような蒐集が成されていったかを、わが国の 例を中心にみていくことにしたい。文献等から蒐集の歴史をみていくにあたり、 一般には「殷周」と一括りにして捉える傾向が常であることから、本論でも、 場合によって西周も含めた観点で論じることもあるかと思うが、ご了解いただ きたい。 先ずは近代までの中国国内での評価のあらましをみていくことにする。殷周 青銅器は、既に漢代の頃、吉祥の象徴とされ、鼎の発見は元号を変えるほどの 大事とされた（『漢書』武帝本紀にある「元鼎」がその元号にあたると思われる） 。 しかし、唐から五代の期間、まれに世に出現しているものの、およそ「怪異の 境」のものとして認識され、北山崖廃墟や墓に打ち捨てられ、収拾もされない という悲惨な状況で無視されていたことが知られている。 これに価値を見出したのが、北宋代の士大夫たちであった。彼らは孔子が憧 れる周の礼制を具現化した殷周青銅器を殊のほか重んじ蒐集をしたのである。 この気運は徽宗皇帝（在位：1100 － 1126）の時代に最盛期を迎える。徽宗は 殷周青銅器の最大の蒐集家となり、自身のコレクションと諸家に蔵された作品 はっ こ

を収めた『博古図』を編纂した。また、倣古銅器の作成にも力を注いだ。この 倣古の流れは清代まで続いた。 げいさん

元代においても殷周青銅器に対する価値観は継承されていく。例えば「倪瓚 か

図」では文人画家倪瓚の傍らにある机上に青銅斝が飾られており、これは鑑賞 道具としての青銅器の最古の表現とされている。この価値観はその後の明清代 にも受け継がれ、清朝乾隆帝（在位：1735 － 1796）は青銅器蒐集と研究に力 せいしん こ か ん

を入れ、その成果を『西清古鑑』などに集成した。 このように中国では、殷代青銅器は伝統文物の最たるものとして、古来より 珍重され蒐集が成されていったのである。

ではわが国ではどのような評価が成されていたかというと、先ずは煎茶の世 界でその存在価値が認められていた。煎茶は、中国の「文人趣味」の世界を感 得する目的として確立され、江戸時代に広まりをみせる。江戸後半期の文化文 政期には、文房（書斎）に煎茶の喫茶趣味のあることが当たり前となり、中国 趣味あふれる道具に囲まれ、煎茶を喫しながら同好の士と交わる文人のスタイ ルが定着し、幕末には様々な階層の人々に広がっていった。こうした趣向は明 治に入り、さらに隆盛をみせるのである。 めいえん

この頃には、茗園と呼ばれる大寄せの茶会がたびたび開催されるようになり、 その最大の特色が「展観席」であった。ここでは、様々な分野の美術作品を、個々 の煎茶席の本床・書斎や脇床の違い棚に飾り、一堂に会して鑑賞されたわけで あるが、ここに中国古銅器の席が設けられている。この様子を絵に示した茗園 図録も制作されており、江戸から明治にかけての賑やかな展観席の様相を知る とともに、そこに陳列された作品の概要を認識することができる。 茗園図録のなかで、中国古銅器が飾り具として記録された最古の例が、山 せいごじょう

本梅逸（1783 － 1856）による『清娯帖』（1844 年）である。ここには、方鼎、 い

れている。幕末期文久 3 年（1863）の『青 湾茶会図録』には、盉 が水注、卣 が花器として用いられている。また明治 7 年（1874）、美術商山中吉郎兵衛 しゅんこう

（箺篁、1847 － 1917）が、大坂綱島で開催した青湾茶会の内容を著した『青湾 めいえん

茗讌図誌』にも青銅器が描かれており、それによると、花缾（瓶）に商史卣を、 爐（炉）に古銅鼎を用いており、前者は『博古図』に、後者は『西清古鑑』に 同形のものが記載されているとある。 しかしながら、こうした茗園図録に登場する青銅器は、当時の時代背景から みて、宋代か明清代の倣古銅器であると考えてよいだろう。 作品の真偽の内容はともあれ、わが国では江戸時代以来、煎茶の世界を通じ、 文人趣味の飾りとして青銅器が重んじられたことは、その後の蒐集過程を見た 時に、他国と比べて大きなアドバンテージとなったことに相違ない。

本格的な殷代青銅器がわが国に将来された重要な事例が、住友吉左衛門 （1865 － 1926）によるコレクションである。 しゅんすい

住友吉左衛門は、住友家第 15 代当主で号を春翠とした。明治期の関西では 煎茶が流行し、春翠は高名な茶人として知られた存在であった。春翠は、家業 の産銅、銅工業に因む重宝でもあることから、青銅器の蒐集に着手することに

なる。それは明治 32 年（1899）から始められるが、その 3 年後の明治 35 年（1902） い

き

以降、その蒐集は大きな変容を遂げた。この年 1 年で蒐集した青銅彝 器は 16 点で、その中で殷代の作品は、犠首方尊（挿図 1）など 5 点である。翌 36 年 （1903）にも計 12 点と旺盛な蒐集をしており、そのなかには有名な虎卣（挿図 2） を含む 6 点の殷代青銅器が入っている。ではなぜ、突如としてこれらの本格的 青銅器が蒐集されたのであろうか。 はたぞうろく

春翠の蒐集を目の当たりにしてきた金工家秦蔵六（二世）は、この時のこと ほくしん じ へ ん

を次のように語っている。「北清事変の時、清国帝室秘蔵の古銅器が沢山外へ かっきょどう

「北清事変」は、1900 年（明治 33）に起こった「義和団事件」を指す。義和 団事件により、約 1 年の間北京城は列強八か国に占拠され、その期間に紫禁城 はもとより、あらゆる清室ゆかりの建造物、寺院、陵墓などが列強の手に委ね られたことで、中国のいわゆる宮廷文物が流出した。 そして「鶴居堂藤田弥助」は、京都の美術商で、明治期には欧米、中国に渡 り活動をしていたことから、わが国では、鑑賞美術に主眼を置いた美術商の先 駆的存在であったと思われる。したがって、義和団事件を契機として、清室所 蔵の殷周青銅器が流出した時に、藤田がそれを逸早くキャッチし、青銅器蒐集 に取り組み始めた住友春翠に紹介したことで、住友の青銅器コレクションは、 世界的な水準に押し上げられることになった。 明治年間、住友のほかにわが国の青銅器蒐集家として知られたのが、藤田伝 みつあき

一歩を示したといえる。

せいはくき

この頃世界的に名が知られていたのは、清末の高官である盛 伯煕（1850 － たんほう

1899）と端方（1861 － 1911）であった。特に端方は、明治 41 年（1908）に自 とうさい きっきんろく

身のコレクション図録『陶斎吉金録』を著し、200 点を超える殷周青銅器を紹 へんきん

（殷周時代の二十器からなる青銅器） 介している。そのなかで、最も有名な「柉禁」

（挿図３）は、1901 年（明治 34）に陝西省 宝鶏県闘鶏台で発掘されたものであった。 盛伯煕は 1899 年（明治 32）に没し、端方 は 1911（明治 44）年の辛亥革命で犠牲に なったが、その後彼らのコレクションに注 目していた美術商たちによって、収蔵品は 散逸することになる。

1911 年（明治 44）から 12 年（明治 45） の辛亥革命前後に、紫禁城内の至宝という べき第一級の美術作品が世に流出したこ とで、欧米人による中国美術蒐集に拍車が かかった。ほどなくその対象となったのが 殷周青銅器であるが、その背景には、明治

この図録が海外の蒐集家に高く評価されるようになることで、彼らの蒐集意欲 をいっそう奮い立たせたのである。 岡倉覚三（天心、1863 － 1913）は、ボストン美術館に奉職していた明治 45 年（1912）に 3 度中国行きを敢行している。これは、辛亥革命直後の混乱に乗 じた美術品の買い付けが目的であるが、前年に出版された『泉屋清賞』に触発 されたことも充分にあった。この時瑠璃廠の複数の骨董店において、35 点の 青銅器を入手している。そのなかには、盛伯煕の収蔵品 10 点が含まれており、 岡倉はこの年の 5 月 16 日付のボストン美術館宛の手紙に、名高い盛伯煕のコ レクションを入手できたことで、欧米における最高の青銅器蒐集を確立するだ ろう、と綴っている。また、この時点で西洋には、優れた殷周青銅器はほとん どないことも述べている。 一方、端方コレクションであるが、これはチャールズ・ラング・フリーア（1854 － 1919）が、1910 年代に青銅器をはじめ数多くの作品を入手したといわれて いる。端方のコレクションは、その後も市場に登場し、大正末から昭和初期に、 日本国内で行われた山中商会の売立に多数出品された。 ヨーロッパにおいては、イギリスの中国陶磁蒐集の第一人者であったジョー ジ・ユーモルフォプロス（1863 － 1939）が、1929 年（昭和 4）に刊行した自 身の青銅器コレクション図録の序文に、ヨーロッパにおいては第一次大戦（1914 － 8）前まではこのジャンルの美術品に対する関心は低く…その時期に極東に

おいては住友男爵の大蒐集がなされ、立派なカタログが出版されることによっ て自分もこれに啓示を受けたのである。…良い青銅器がしばしば見られるよう になったのは世界大戦が終わってから後のことだとある。この回想からヨー ロッパにおける青銅器コレクションが盛んになるのは 1920 年代に入ってから と考えられる。 すえじ

この時期の様相を如実にあらわしているのが、梅原末 治（1893 － 1983）の 研究である。梅原末治は大正 15 年（1926）から昭和 4 年（1929）まで欧州を 巡り中国古美術調査を行い、帰国後の昭和 8 年から 10 年（1933 － 35）にかけて、 しゅうちょ

調査成果として『欧米 蒐 儲 支那古銅精華』全 7 巻を刊行した。そこで彼は「ほ とんど伝世していないその新出の遺品に古銅器の真の姿の示されていることを 知って感興を新たに」したとあるように、この図録全 7 巻のうち第１、第 2 巻 に掲載された 163 点の殷周代の作品のほとんどが、近年の出土品であることが わかる。アメリカ、イギリス、フランス、ドイツ、スウェーデンなどの高名な コレクターの名が挙げられているなか、メトロポリタン美術館をはじめとした アメリカ・ニューヨークのコレクションが光彩を放っている。この背景には山 中商会があったことが窺い知れる。山中商会は、1917 年（大正 6）に 5 番街の 一等地に店舗を構え、1920 年代はその絶頂期であった。欧米の殷周青銅器蒐 集の流行に対し、ヤマナカも当然エンジンをかけて対処したことであろう。先 に触れたが、山中商会は大正 12 年（1923）大阪美術俱楽部で開催した『古代 支那美術展観』で、端方の『陶斎吉金録』登載品として古銅器 25 点を出品し、 これを皮切りに、翌 13 年（1924）、さらに昭和 3 年（1928）の展観にも端方旧 へんきん

蔵古銅器を取り扱っている。また、先述した端方の「柉禁」は、1924 年（大正

13）にメトロポリタン美術館の所蔵となっている。入手経路は判然としていな いが、これにはやはり山中商会が関わっていると考えてよいだろう。

これまでの蒐集内容をまとまると、1900 年代から 1910 年代に市場に流通し た殷代青銅器は、義和団事件と辛亥革命を契機として流出した清室に蔵された 伝来品が中心であり、1920 年代以降になると、河南、陝西、山西の中原地域の 出土品が主になったと考えられる。そして、1928 年（昭和 3）に始まる殷墟の 発掘を境とし、出土品群が最高潮を迎えるのである。 これは、先述した梅原の欧米での青銅器調査が実証している。梅原は、大正

15 年（1926）から昭和 4 年（1929）までの欧米滞在のなか、「最後の一年を主 として調査に費やした」とあるように、昭和 3 年（1928）から 4 年（1929）に 実見した殷代青銅器を紹介しているのである。これら作品をみると、まさに殷

墟出土と思われる作品が多々入っていること が窺える。 こうしたハイクラスの青銅器の出現によ り、世界各国のコレクションも充実していっ た。わが国でも、優れた殷代青銅器コレクショ ンが新たに形成されるようになる。根津嘉 一郎（1860 － 1940）と嘉納治兵衛（1862 －

1951）による蒐集である。 根津嘉一郎は、当代を代表する近代数寄者 の一人として名高いが、その蒐集は茶道具の 枠を超え多分野に及んだ。殷代青銅器の蒐集 は昭和に入ってからで、これには山中商会社 長山中定次郎（1866 － 1936）が関わっている。 とうてつもん ほ う か

から購入したもので、殷墟の侯家荘から出土 したものと伝えられ、根津はその後他の二器も入手し三器を揃えることに成功 だ い し くうそん

している（挿図 4）。加えてその前後の期間で、侯家荘、大司空村出土と伝えら れる大形の殷代青銅器を次々と入手し、17 点の殷代青銅器を蒐集、そのうち 9 点が重要文化財に指定されているほどの名コレクションを築いた。 嘉納治兵衛のコレクションであるが、これには美術商浅野楳吉（1877 －

1960）の関わりが大きい。浅野は、明治 37 年（1904）に上海に渡り中国古美 術の売買を開始し、大正 8 年（1919）大阪平野町に店舗を構えている。前述し た藤田弥助の次世代の鑑賞美術商としてその名を築いた人物で、大正年間に欧 米の名立たる美術館や蒐集家と取引をした。嘉納治兵衛と浅野との関わりは大 正 13 年（1924）からとされ、嘉納はそれ以後浅野を通じて名品を蒐集し、昭 和 6 年（1931）に白鶴美術館を設立した。白鶴の優れた殷代青銅器は、浅野に よると昭和 10 年（1935）前後の取り扱いとされる（挿図 5）。殷代青銅器を 13 点蒐集し、5 点が重要文化財に指定されている。

梅原末治は、欧米から帰国後の昭和 4 年（1929）から 14 年（1939）にかけて、 国内の青銅器の調査を敢行し、『日本蒐儲支那古銅精華』を著した（昭和 34 〜

39 年（1959 － 1964）刊行）。この序文に「昭和十年前後に新たに安陽侯家荘 での殷大墓群の発掘があり、優れた遺品が将来され、それを通じて自ら殷代古 銅器の様相が確かめられることになった」と記している。

前述の通り、その頃欧州でも秀逸な青銅器の入手が盛んになっていた。その 一例として興味深いのが、スウェーデンにおけるカールベック・シンジケート である。これは、1906 年（明治 41）から 27 年（昭和 2）まで中国で鉄道技師 として活動していたオルヴァル・カールベック（1879 － 1967）の名前から付 けられている。カールベックは中国滞在中に、青銅器時代の文物の蒐集と研究 をし高い鑑識眼を身につけた。彼は、1925 年（大正 14）に設立されたストッ クホルム東洋博物館で、1930 年（昭和 5）から蒐集専門家として勤務している。 その頃中国美術に対する美術館、蒐集家の受容を満たすため、招待制のシンジ ケートが結成された。発起人の一人はかの有名な蒐集家、グスタフ 6 世アドル フ（1882 － 1973）であった。彼は、住友の青銅器コレクションに感銘を受け、 大正 15 年（1926）に来日までしている。カールベックは、20 名のメンバーが 拠出した費用をもって、1930 年（昭和 5）頃から 34 年（昭和 9）の間に 3 回 中国に遠征し、優れた青銅器を調達したのである。本展覧会に出陳している「青 銅鼎」 （図版 43）も、第三回遠征時の 1934 年（昭和 9）11 月に入手したもので、 殷墟の武官村出土という記録がある。この時鼎は一対で発見され、そのうちの 一つは、イギリスのヘンリー・オッペンハイム（1895 ？－ 1946）の所有に帰し、 現在は大英博物館に収蔵されている。そして、カールベックが入手した鼎をそ の後所有したのが、シンジケートのメンバーであったデイヴィッド・デイヴィッ ド＝ウェイル（1871 － 1952）である。彼は、当時フランスの高名な蒐集家と して名を馳せており、中国美術においては先駆的コレクターであった。1912 年 （大正元）には青銅瓿を購入しルーヴル美術館に寄贈し、その後長きに渡り、 ルー ヴル美術館とギメ美術館に多数の作品を寄贈した。また、彼は 1934 年（昭和 9）

3 月から 12 月にかけて中国を訪れ、その後の 1935 年（昭和 10）にカールベッ クからこの鼎を購入している。現在、殷墟出土品のほとんどは美術館などに収 蔵されているため、この鼎は民間に残されていた希少な例といえる。

さて、わが国の殷代青銅器の評価であるが、国際的に抜きん出ていたことは、 世界が証明している。明治 44 年（1911）の住友コレクション図録『泉屋清賞』 により、上記の例のように、欧米の名立たる蒐集家たちが、これに一目を置い て青銅器のコレクションへ発動し、欧米で名コレクションが形成された。20 世 紀初期に世界市場へと流出した中国美術の名品を一同に会した空前絶後の大展 覧会『中国芸術国際展覧会』が 1935 年から 6 年（昭和 10 － 11）にかけてロン ドンで開催され、わが国からも傑出した蒐集品が海を渡った。このなかに、住 友コレクション 2 点と根津コレクション 3 点の青銅器が含まれている。この展 覧会では会期中、3000 点という出品作品の中から毎週その陳列品中の傑作を１

点選び出し、これを《その週の傑作》（The Masterpieces of the Week）として 会場の最も目立つ場所に飾った。その栄えある一番として《第一週の傑作》 （The

Masterpieces of the First Week）に選出されたのが、根津コレクションの「饕餮 文方盉」だったのである（挿図 6、7）。日本の殷代青銅器コレクションが、い かにレベルの高いものであるかを世界が認めた出来事であった。

総括してみると、わが国には煎茶の土壌があったことから、江戸時代より青 銅器の受容があった。そして、明治 33 年（1900）の義和団事件を契機とし、 清室伝来の殷代青銅器が将来したことで、住友春翠による膨大なコレクション が築かれた。それはすなわち、殷代青銅器が煎茶の枠を超え、鑑賞美術の重要 な分野として認識されたことを意味する。これを殷代青銅器蒐 集の第一期とすると、第二期に当たるのが 1920 年代から 30 年 代であり、この背景には殷墟及び周辺の大墓から多くの優れた 作品が出土したことがある。この第二期のコレクションとして 名高いのが、根津と白鶴のコレクションである。このように、 市場による殷代青銅器蒐集には大きく二つの波があり、わが国 では、第一期に形成された住友コレクションが基盤にあったこ とで、これを受けた第二期の蒐集も、ハイレベルな内容となっ たといえるのではないだろうか。 近代になり詳らかになった殷代青銅器は、世界の中国美術蒐 集家を魅了した。まさに中国美術の源流であり、その荘厳さは 現在においても全く色褪せることはない。

The Collection and Evaluation of Shang Dynasty Bronzes, Primarily in Japan Kawashima Tadashi

Shang dynasty bronzes, considered the quintessential form of the medium, possess a richly creative quality and aesthetic that is almost unfathomable to us today.

Shang bronzes, which can be considered the wellspring of Chinese art, have long been appreciated, and in the modern era have come to be collected as artworks. How were they evaluated over the course of history; how did this collecting process start? The following considers these questions, focusing on examples in Japan. When we look at the history of collecting in written sources, we see that there is a trend towards considering these bronzes with those of the following Zhou dynasty, in other words, a Shang/Zhou category. In some circumstances I will also include the Western Zhou examples in my discussion below.

First let us take a brief overview of how Shang bronzes were evaluated within China itself. By around the Han dynasty, Shang bronzes were already auspicious symbols. The discovery of a ding ritual vessel was considered a major event that called for a reign date name change. The "yuanding" (元鼎) reign date mentioned in the "Wudi benji" (武帝本紀) chapter of the Hanshu (漢書) is thought to be the relevant reign date. Though few such works were known in the Tang dynasty to Five dynasties period, those that did appear were recognized as "from the realm of mysteries". Such bronzes are known to have been neglected, as witnessed by their in the tragic, abandoned condition at the Beishanya caves site and grave sites.

It was the scholar-officials of the Northern Song dynasty who then discerned their value. These men revered the Shang and Zhou bronzes as manifestations of the Zhou rituals that Confucius longed for, and as such they collected them. This trend reached its peak during the reign of emperor Huizong (r. 1100 -1126). Huizong became the greatest collector of Shang and Zhou bronzes.

He compiled and edited a book, Bogutu, which included his own collection and

those of various other collectors. He also encouraged the production of bronzes imitating ancient works. This reproduction trend then continued in China until the Qing dynasty.

This high regard for Shang and Zhou bronzes continued through the Yuan dynasty. For example, in Nizantu, the literati painter Ni Zan is depicted sitting next to a desk where a bronze jia is displayed. This is the oldest known example of such bronzes being used as objects purely for visual appreciation.

This high regard for these bronzes continued into the following Ming and Qing dynasties, with Qing emperor Qianlong (r. 1735-1796) collecting and studying bronzes, with the results of these efforts compiled in catalogues such as Xiqing gujian.

In this manner, Shang bronzes were considered the pinnacle of traditional cultural artifacts and as such have long been revered and collected.

Then let us consider how the evaluation system for such bronzes was developed in Japan. These objects were first considered and evaluated in the sencha tea ceremony realm. Sencha was established in Japan with the aim of creating a means of entering into and appreciating Chinese literati interests, and as such spread in Japan through the Edo period. During the late Edo period BunkaBunsei era (1804-1829) it was considered fashionable to have one's study set up for the enjoyment of sencha. In the system of literati-style gatherings like-minded people enjoyed sencha surrounded by utensils and artifacts redolent of Chinese tastes. This practice had spread to people of various classes and social settings by the end of the Edo period and grew even more popular with the arrival of the Meiji period.

Around this time large sencha tea gatherings known as meien were staged.

The highlight of these events was the tenranseki, a type of tea ceremony room that featured displays of various artwork genres arranged in the main tokonoma display area and/or on the chigaidana (staggered shelves) in the shoin desk alcove or side alcove. Thus, these artworks were arranged to be appreciated in ensemble, and an ancient Chinese bronze display would be featured in such tenranseki. They also made meien zuroku (illustrated meien tea gathering records), which conveyed the appearance of such installations. These records inform us about the appearance of these lively events from the Edo through the Meiji period and provide an

overview of the works that were displayed in such settings.

The meien zuroku's earliest example of ancient Chinese bronzes used as adornment for such events can be found in Seigojō by Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783 1856), which was published in 1844. This book depicts a variety of vessel shapes,

including square ding, yi, you, bu, gu, jue, square hu and zun. The Seiwan chakai zuroku published in 1863 (Bunky ū 3) indicates that a he was used as water pitcher

and a you as flower vase. The art dealer Yamanaka Kichirobei (Shunkō, 1847-1917) also depicted bronzes in the Seiwan meien zushi, his book chronicling the Seiwan chakai held in Tsunashima, Osaka in 1874 (Meiji 7). The book indicated that a

Shang shi you was used as a flower vase and an ancient bronze ding was used as brazier, with the former depicted as the same shape seen in the Bogutu and the latter, the same shape seen in the Xiqing gujian.

And yet, the bronzes that appear in these meien zuroku, judging by the circumstances at the time, were probably ancient style bronzes from the Song to Qing dynasties.

There is also the issue of whether or not works were authentic or forgeries.

But, in Japan from the Edo period onwards, the sencha world meant that bronzes came to be valued as literati taste adornment, and undoubtedly this became a great advantage for the later collecting process, compared to the situation in other countries.

An important early example of Shang bronzes actually being brought to Japan can be found in the collection of Sumitomo Kichizaemon (1865-1926).

Sumitomo Kichizaemon was the 15th head of the Sumitomo family.

His gō was Shunsui. Sencha was popular in the Kansai region during the Meiji period, and Shunsui was a renowned tea master. Shunsui chose to collect bronzes partly because they were treasures related to the family business, namely copper smelting and refining. He began collecting in 1899 (Meiji 32), with a great change in his collecting occurring three years later, from 1902 (Meiji 35) onwards. That year he collected 16 bronze religious implements, including five dated to the Shang dynasty, such as the Fang Zun with Taotie Design (fig. 1). The following year, 1903, he was equally successful, acquiring another 12 works, among these the Important Art Object-designated Hu you (fig. 2). Then we might ask, why did he suddenly start actively collecting these bronzes?

The metal artist Hata Zōroku II, who personally witnessed Shunsui's collecting activities described it at the time as follows. "At the time of the Boxer Rebellion many of the ancient bronzes from the Qing Dynasty's imperial collections flowed into the overseas market. The discerning eye of Kakkyodō Fujita Yasuke quickly spotted these works, collected them and brought them to Japan, and given that the Sumitomo family was the copper king of the day, the head of the family bought them in a single lot."

The Boxer Rebellion, also known as the Yihetuan Movement, took place in 1900 (Meiji 33). An eight-nation alliance responded to this anti-foreign uprising, sending troops and eventually breaking the siege of Beijing and occupying the imperial palace for about a year. were sacked, with many of China's imperial treasures flowing out of the country.

Kakkyodō Fujita Yasuke was an art dealer in Kyoto who was active in the West and China during the Meiji period. In Japan he is considered to have been one of the pioneering art dealers who focused on art for visual appreciation.

Thus, as the Boxer Rebellion's events led imperial collection Shang and Zhou bronzes to begin appearing in the market, Fujita was quick to snap them up, and introduce them to Sumitomo Shunsui who had begun collecting bronzes. These were the historical circumstances that raised the Sumitomo bronze collection to world-class standard.

In addition to Sumitomo, other Meiji period collectors of Chinese bronzes included Fujita Denzaburō (1841-1912) in Osaka, Ogawa Tamejirō (1851-1926) in Kobe, and Tanaka Mitsuaki (1843 -1939) and Furukawa Ichibei (1832-1903) in Tokyo. Of those, Gu, Archaic Bronze Wine Cup (cat. no. 41) in this exhibition is known to have been in Ogawa's collection.

April of 1903 saw the holding of the Ancient Bronzes of the Imperial Museum Collection exhibition at the Imperial Museum in Tokyo, thanks to Shunsui ʼs

energetic collection of Shang and Zhou bronzes. This was the first exhibition of Chinese bronzes in Japan. The Sumitomo collection works formed the core of its display. This exhibition led to the increased interest in and evaluation of Shang bronzes in Japan and it was also a huge step forward for the scholarly study of the subject.

The world became aware of two late Qing high-ranking officials during

this period, namely Sheng Baixi (1850 -1899) and Duan Fang (1861-1911). In particular, Duan Fang published his own collection catalogue in 1908, Tao zhai ji jin lu, introducing more than 200 Shang and Zhou bronzes. The most famous of these, shown here at fig. 3, is the Altar Set, consisting of 20 Shang and Zhou dynasty bronzes, which

was excavated in 1901 at Doujitai, Baoji prefecture, Shaanxi province. Sheng Baixi died in 1899, and Duan Fang in the 1911 Xinhai Revolution. After their deaths art dealers who had been aware of their collections were the conduit for their scattering to

collections worldwide.

Around the time of the Xinhai Revolution in 1911-1912, the highest quality works of their kind, namely the treasures from the Forbidden Palace, flowed into the marketplace where they further hastened the collecting of Chinese art by Westerners. Shang and Zhou bronzes quickly became part of this trend, with Sumitomo Shunsui's publication of his first collection catalogue, Sen-oku sei-shō, in 1911. This catalogue was highly prized by overseas collectors, and it further spurred on their collecting spirit.

Okakura Kakuzō (Tenshin, 1863 -1913) was hired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and made three trips to China on the museum's behalf in 1912. These were art buying trips, taking advantage of the confusion immediately

after the Xinhai Revolution, and surely were partly inspired by the publication of Sen-oku sei-shō the previous year. During those trips Okakura was able to acquire 35 bronzes at several different antique dealers then located in Liulichang, a district in Beijing. Ten of those works came from the Sheng Baixi collection. In a letter dated May 16, 1912, Okakura wrote to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston that he had been able to acquire the renowned Sheng Baixi collection and it would help the museum establish the finest collection of bronzes in the West. He further noted that there were then almost no superb Shang and Zhou bronzes in the West.

On the other hand, Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919) was able to acquire many items from the Duan Fang collection during the 1910s, including bronzes.

Duan Fang collection works later appeared on the marketplace, with many works were sold at Yamanaka & Co., Ltd. auctions held in Japan during the late Taishō to early Shōwa periods.

George Eumorfopoulos (1863 -1939) was the premier collector of Chinese ceramics in England at the time. In 1929 he published a catalogue of his own bronze collection. To paraphrase Eumorfopoulos' comments in that volume's Foreword, he noted that while the West showed very little interest in the genre before the Great War, Baron Sumitomo in the Far East had amassed a large collection during that period. He said that the Baron presented him with a copy of his own splendid collection catalogue, which provided food for thought. He mused that even to specialists like himself, this collection was a revelation of what Chinese bronzes could be and that it wasn't until after the Great War that good quality bronzes had begun to appear more frequently. These memoirs suggest that the European collections of bronzes did not flourish until the beginning of the 1920s.

Research by Umehara Sueji (1893 -1983) fully conveys a sense of the state of affairs during that period. Umehara conducted a series of studies of ancient Chinese art in Europe from 1926 to 1929 (Taishō 15 – Shōwa 4). He then returned to Japan, and from 1933 to 1935 wrote and published his research results in a seven-volume series titled Shina-Kodo seikwa, or Selected Relics of Ancient Chinese Bronzes from Collections in Europe and America. In this volume Umehara wrote,

"These newly appeared works, of a material with little above-ground transmission, conveyed to me the true form of ancient bronzes and have renewed my interest in them." Reflecting these sentiments, most of the 163 Shang and Zhou works included in volumes 1 and 2 of the seven-volume catalogue were recently excavated works. Among the renowned American, English, French, German and Swedish collectors named in the catalogue, the collections in New York, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, were standouts. Yamanaka & Co., Ltd. was one of the reasons for this situation. In 1917, Yamanaka opened a shop on Fifth Avenue. That shop reached its peak in the 1920s. Thus Yamanaka was naturally one of the engines driving the trend towards Shang and Zhou bronze collecting in the West. As mentioned above, Yamanaka held The Exhibition of

Ancient Chinese Art at the Osaka Bijutsu Club in 1923 (Taishō 12), including 25

ancient bronzes that had been published in Duan Fang's Tao zhai ti jin lu. With this as the starting point, further exhibitions held the following year, 1924 and again in 1928 (Shōwa 3), also included ancient bronzes previously owned by Duan Fang. The ex-Duan Fang collection Altar Set was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in 1924. While details of that acquisition process are unclear, we can probably consider that Yamanaka was involved in that process.

To summarize what was collected at different periods, the 1900s to 1910s saw primarily Qing imperial household-related Shang bronzes flow into

the marketplace due to the Boxer Rebellion and the Xinhai Revolution. From the 1920s onwards, the majority of works in the marketplace were those excavated

from sites in China's central plains, Henan, Shaanxi, and Shanxi provinces. Then the 1928 start to excavations at Yin Xu marked the greatest number of excavated works in the marketplace.

This summation is proved by the previously mentioned Umehara study of bronzes in the West. Umehara was in the West from 1926 to 1929, and said, "The last year of that time was largely spent on investigations." His book introduced the Shang bronzes he had personally viewed in 1928 to 1929, many of which clearly look like they had been excavated at Yin Xu. Various collections worldwide were able to grow and mature thanks to the appearance of these high-quality bronzes in the market. They also led to the new formation of superb Shang bronze collections in Japan. These were the collections formed by Nezu Kaichirō (1860 -1940) and Kanō Jihei (1862-1951).

Nezu is renowned as one of that period's modern era sukisha (cultured gentlemen), with his collection focusing on tea ceremony-related works, but also covering a broad array of other media and genres. He began collecting Shang bronzes in the Shōwa era, with Yamanaka Sadajirō, the president of Yamanaka & Co. Ltd.,

involved in that process. Today, one of the treasures of the Nezu Museum collection is his Fang He, Squared Wine/Water Vessel with Taotie Design, Inscribed ‘Zuo’ , which he acquired from Yamanaka & Co., Ltd. in 1933 and is said to have been excavated at Houjiazhuang, Yin Xu. Nezu later acquired two other works of the same type and design (fig. 4). In addition, around that time he also acquired a succession of large Shang bronzes said to have been excavated at Houjiazhuang and Dasikongcun. He thus built such a major collection of 17 Shang bronzes that nine of them have been designated Important Cultural Properties.

Kanō Jihei's collection is closely linked to the art dealer Asano Umekichi (1877-1960). Asano traveled to Shanghai in 1904 (Meiji 37), and there began buying and selling ancient Chinese art. In 1919 (Taishō 8), he opened a store in Hiranomachi, Osaka. Asano built a reputation as the second generation of Japanese art dealers, after the previously mentioned Fujita Yasuke, who focused on artworks for visual appreciation. He was involved with many of the famous Western museums and collectors active in the Taishō period (1912-1926). Kanō Jihei and Asano's connection began in 1924 (Taishō 13), with Kanō going on to acquire major works through Asano. In 1931 (Shōwa 6), he founded the Hakutsuru Fine Art Museum in Kobe. The Hakutsuru's superb Shang bronzes were acquired from Asano around 1935 (fig. 5). Kanō collected a total of 13 Shang bronzes, with five of them designated Important Cultural Properties.

research on the Chinese bronzes in Japan from 1929 through 1939 and published the results from 1959 to 1964 in a series titled Nihon Shūcho, Shina Kodō Seikwa: Selected Relics of Ancient Chinese Bronzes from Collections in Japan. In the preface

of that series, he noted, "Around 1935 (Shōwa 10), a large group of Shang tombs was excavated at Houjiazhuang, Anyang. Superb works from this excavation were brought to Japan, and through them I was able to confirm the appearance of Shang dynasty ancient bronzes."

As noted above, around that time exceptional bronzes were being acquired by collectors in Europe. One fascinating example of such works is the collection assembled in Sweden by the Karlbeck Syndicate. The syndicate was named after Orvar Karlbeck (1879-1967) who worked as a railroad engineer in China from 1906 to 1927. During his time in China, Karlbeck collected and

studied Bronze Age artifacts and developed a fine eye for such materials. In 1930 he began working as a collection specialist at the Museum of Far Eastern

Antiquities, Stockholm, which had been founded in 1925. In order to fulfill the demand for Chinese art at the time from art museums and collectors, he formed a by-invitation-only syndicate, the Karlbeck Syndicate. One of the founding members of this syndicate was the renowned collector, Gustaf VI Adolf (18821973), then Crown Prince of Sweden. Gustaf VI Adolf ʼs interest in the Sumitomo

bronze collection was so great that he visited Japan in 1926. With the funds raised by the 20 syndicate members, Karlbeck visited China three times between 1930 and 1934, acquiring superb bronzes for the syndicate. In November 1934,

Karlbeck acquired the Ding, Archaic Bronze Cauldron (cat. no. 43) in this exhibition on his third buying trip to China. Records state that this work was excavated at Wuguancun, Yin Xu. At the time it was discovered as one of a pair of ding.

The second ding entered the collection of Henry J. Oppenheim (1895?-1946) and today is in the British Museum. The ding acquired by Karlbeck was later owned by syndicate member David David-Weill (1871-1952). At the time David-Weill was a renowned French collector and a pioneering collector of Chinese art. In 1912 (Taishō 1), he acquired a bronze bu, which he donated to the Louvre. Then

over many years he donated numerous works to both the Louvre and the Musée Guimet, Paris. He visited China from March to December 1934, and in 1935, purchased this ding from Karlbeck. Most of the items excavated at Yin Xu are today in museum collections. This ding is a rare example of one still in private hands.

Thus we can see how Shang bronzes in Japan were highly valued and the world went on to prove that these holdings were exceptional within the international realm of such works. As seen in the example quoted above, according to the 1911 Sumitomo collection catalogue Sen-oku sei-shō, once the renowned Western

collectors saw and were impressed by the Sumitomo collection, it set off their own bronze collecting that resulted in the founding of major collections in the West.

The International Exhibition of Chinese Art, held in London 1935-1936, provided an unprecedented opportunity to see en masse the masterpieces of Chinese art that had flowed into the global market in the early 20th century. Indeed, masterpieces from Japanese collections also traveled to London for display in this massive

exhibition, including two Chinese bronzes from the Sumitomo collection and three from the Nezu collection. Each week during the course of this exhibition, one of the 3,000 displayed items was chosen as that week's feature item. These Masterpieces of the Week were displayed in the most eye-catching position within the galleries. The Nezu collection's Fang He, Squared Wine/Water Vessel with Taotie Design (figs. 6, 7) was chosen as the Masterpiece of the First Week.

This designation showed that the world affirmed the superiority of Japan's Shang bronze collections.

To summarize, Japan's reception of Shang bronzes began in the Edo period, starting with their use in sencha ceremonies. The 1900 Boxer Rebellion marked the next watershed, when Qing imperial household-related Shang bronzes were brought to Japan, and Sumitomo Shunsui built his massive collection. This collection meant that Shang bronzes had moved beyond the sencha framework and had become an important genre of art for visual appreciation. If we call this the first period of Japanese collecting of Shang bronzes, then the second period spans the 1920s to 1930s, a period underscored by the many masterpieces excavated at Yin Xu and the large tombs in the area. The two famous collections formed during this second period are the Nezu and Hakutsuru collections. We can thus say that the market set off two major waves of Shang bronze collecting, with the forming of the Sumitomo collection and its superb quality in the first period setting the basis from which equally high-level content collections were formed in the second period.

As we have gained a more detailed understanding of Shang bronzes in recent years, they have continued to fascinate Chinese art collectors worldwide. Indeed, these bronzes can be seen as the genesis of Chinese art, with their magnificence unfaded even today.
