A YEAR OF PURPOSEFUL
CHOICES FOR EVERY PARENT SHAPING A SEASON OF SIGNIFICANCE WITH PRESENCE AND MINDFULNESS
Parenting isn’t a race — it’s a relationship. Dr. Manimekalai Mohan, founder of SSVM Group of Institutions, is a visionary educationist and advocate for holistic child development. In this inspiring conversation, she shares how parents can create a joyful, purposedriven academic year for their children by nurturing growth with patience, presence, and meaningful engagement.
What role does the home environment play in a child’s academic journey, especially at the start of a school year?
A calm corner in the house can become a child’s universe of wonder. The home need not be grand, but it must be nurturing. When a child wakes up to a routine filled with warmth, respect, and quiet encouragement, learning becomes joyful. Replace chaos with calm, screentime with stories, and criticism with connection. Our energy as adults sets the emotional climate of the home. Be it a hug before school or a listening ear at dinner, these are the spaces where confidence takes root. A home filled with love is the best classroom a child can ever have.
In a world of academic pressure, how can parents shift their focus from results to real growth?
We must remember, the roots always matter more than the fruits. As parents, we are gardeners — not harvesters. Growth doesn't happen overnight, nor should it be measured solely by marks. When we begin to appreciate our child's journey — their questions, their creativity, their courage to try, then we raise confident learners, not stressed achievers. Encourage effort, not perfection. When we reward progress and resilience over grades, we plant seeds of self-worth. A child who feels seen for who they are will always do better than a child who’s only seen for what they score.
WhatsApp groups are common in school communities today. What is your vision for how they should be used by parents?
A WhatsApp group is like a community courtyard — meant for warmth, not

worries. It should echo encouragement, not complaints or comparisons. Used wisely, it fosters celebration, collaboration, and connection. But airing grievances publicly disrupts harmony and places undue pressure on others, especially the child involved. Educators are human too, and our tone influences our children’s values. If a concern arises, the right step is to approach the school directly. No other parent can resolve it, as every
child’s journey is unique, and teachers, who are next to parents, understand them best. Honouring this uniqueness helps build a stronger, kinder school community for all.
Tuition has become a trend these days. How can a no-tuition mindset truly benefit families today? When we stop outsourcing our child’s learning, we start discovering their world. A no-tuition mindset isn’t neglect — it’s conscious involvement. Ask what excited your child today. Let them explore, fail, create. Your kitchen can be a science lab, your balcony a reading nook. How can one tuition teacher handle all subjects across grades better than trained school educators? Even in one-on-one setups, imagine a child spending the whole day at school, only to spend evenings in tuition — where is the time for play, rest, family, or creativity? True growth needs space, not just instruction. Let’s not replace curiosity with burnout. Let’s raise children who love learning, not just scoring.
What message do you have for parents who feel disheartened when their child doesn’t “perform” like others?
Comparison is the thief of joy and growth. A mango tree never competes with a jasmine plant; each blooms in its time. Likewise, every child unfolds uniquely. Don’t rush the process or let social pressure cloud your love. Like a farmer tends soil with patience, we must nurture our children. There will be seasons of silence, slow growth, even setbacks but trust them. Celebrate them. Let them feel your unwavering belief, even when they falter. Children who grow with love bloom beautifully, even if they bloom late. So, dear parents, slow down, listen more, and cherish everyday moments that make childhood sacred. Don’t chase perfection; cultivate purpose. Raise not just scholars, but kind human beings. With love as our guide and growth as our goal, the academic year ahead is not just bright — it is transformative.

LOST IN THE HIMALAYAS
F inding peace and balance through yoga and mindfulness.
Words Alaya F.
Wellness for me is a feeling of peace and happiness. It’s when I feel balanced, centred, and in sync with myself. If I ever feel off or disconnected, I know I need to refocus on my overall wellness. For me, wellness isn’t just about what you eat or how much you exercise. It’s about the energy you carry, the space you hold for yourself, and the way you treat your body and mind. It’s that deep sense of peace that comes when you’re truly aligned.
I actually fell into yoga in a very interesting way during the Covid-19 pandemic. I saw a video of someone doing a very cool yoga pose and thought, maybe I could try it. I did, and surprisingly, pulled it off. I even posted a video of it, and the response was really encouraging, so I started looking for more. What began as a fun experiment turned into a real passion. My body naturally adapted to yoga and responded really well. It made me feel strong and centred, so I kept going.
As for my favourite poses - I love being upside down. Headstands, pincha stands, scorpion - I love anything that challenges my balance and strength. For me, yoga isn’t about achieving
impressive poses, but being able to do something I couldn’t do before, and is a beautiful reminder of the progress I’ve made.
Wellness, health, and fitness have completely transformed my life Whether it’s my journaling practice, daily meditations, walks, or movement sessions like yoga, Pilates, or mobility, it’s all a part of how I take care of myself. Even things like eating clean, taking breaks when needed, or reading something that feeds my mind.
Screen Presence
Actor Alaya F. is known for her debut with Saif Ali Khan in
Jaaneman (2020). Daughter of actor Pooja Bedi, she has made her mark in films like Srikanth, Freddy, and U-Turn. Off-screen, her Instagram profile captures a life of balance – yoga, dance and wellness rituals rooted in vibrant, mindful living.
Jawaani
briefing
"On a wellness holiday, I love pampering myself with a nourishing skincare routine. I also carry a good book and my headphones because music and podcasts are a big part of how I unwind. For places where digital devices aren’t allowed, the headphones get tucked away, but I take my journal along to write. For longer travels, I carry snacks like healthy protein laddoos or bars and dry fruits," she says.
Care
She explains, "Self-love is the highest form of love, and everything I do in the name of wellness is a love letter to my body and mind. These habits have changed my life for the better, giving me clarity, structure, and joy."
I’m not typically a mountain person, but Dehradun in Uttarakhand has this beautiful wellness retreat called Vana, which I feel deeply connected to. There’s something about the energy there that puts me at peace. Anytime I need realignment, I find myself drawn back to Dehradun," the actor says.
Wellness Offerings
The actor adds, "The retreat, Vana, is an incredible space that focusses on holistic healing through Ayurveda, Tibetan healing traditions, yoga, and mindful nutrition. It’s also a digital-free space, which means no phones or laptops. That alone makes it one of the most powerful places to detach, detox, and truly reset. It’s quiet, immersive, and has a way of bringing me back to myself."
Into the Green
Dehradun is a green city, surrounded by forests and valleys. The popular hill station of Mussoorie is approximately a 30-km uphill drive away. Short detours can take you to Rajaji National Park, Benog Wildlife Sanctuary and Asan Barrage.

As the heated shells glide across your body, their natural textures work to revitalise tired skin, leaving it smooth and renewed. At Cheval Blanc Spa by Guerlain, Cheval Blanc Seychelles, on Mahé island, there are various other such deeply relaxing rituals, including a soothing sound bath experience.

For generations, islanders have revered the sea coconut for its remarkable therapeutic properties, using its oils and milk in restorative rituals. At Kandima Maldives in Dhaalu Atoll, guests can experience the authentic "Sea Coconut Secret" therapy, a treatment deeply rooted in local tradition. The journey begins with a calming foot soak, followed by a gentle coconut-infused exfoliation that draws from centuries of indigenous knowledge. The natural enzymes and minerals work harmoniously to deliver silky-smooth skin, profound hydration, and the coveted sun-kissed island glow that embodies the essence of Maldivian wellness philosophy.

REGENERATIVE RITUALS IN Switzerland
Switzerland reigns as the world's rejuvenation capital, where centuries-old healing traditions merge with cutting-edge therapies against breathtaking mountain backdrops. At the legendary Badrutt's Palace Hotel in St. Moritz's Engadin Valley, guests can indulge in profound self-reflection while floating in indoor infinity pools overlooking majestic peaks. The iconic establishment offers revolutionary treatments like a signature green caviar therapy, which harnesses rare extracts from Japan's Okinawa Island.

SACRED RHYTHMS OF Kerala
In Kerala, Ayurvedic treatments transcend mere wellness; they form sacred rituals where divine prayers, classical dance, and music intertwine with healing practices. These ancient therapeutic traditions are deeply embedded in ceremonial reverence, passed down through generations. At CGH Earth's Kalari Kovilakom palace in Palakkad district, guests experience authentic treatments within a 200-year-old palatial sanctuary fringed by the Western Ghats. Here, Ayurvedic sessions naturally flow into quiet prayers at an ancient shrine, while classical performances form a part of daily rituals. This erstwhile domain of Vengunad chieftains preserves healing as a holistic cultural experience. Alternatively, visit Paravoor village in southern Kerala, where traditional treatments are offered amidst thick coconut groves and floating islands.

THALASSOTHERAPY IN Indonesia
The natural energy of Bali, Indonesia's most popular island, has long rejuvenated visitors, but its luxury resorts now elevate this healing tradition with ancient wisdom reimagined. Thalassotherapy or the therapeutic use of seawater has been prevalent in Balinese coastal communities, where healers harness the ocean's minerals for physical and spiritual restoration. Today, Ayana Spa offers this transformative experience through its specialised seawater pool, infused with mineral-rich waters from the Indian Ocean. This carefully calibrated treatment activates cellular regeneration, enhances the body's natural healing processes, and significantly reduces fatigue. As you immerse yourself, trace minerals are absorbed through the skin, balancing the body, while the gentle buoyancy of the warm water soothes from within, a perfect synthesis of ancient tradition and modern wellness science.
What Else
Bali's traditional wellness remedies include boreh or spice body wraps and jamu or a turmeric and ginger tonic. Balinese massage with pressure-point techniques and sacred water purification rituals are ancient practices that local healers have perfected over centuries to balance mind, body, and spirit.
Must Be a part of Bali's rich and colourful traditions and culture; witness performances of traditional Kecak and Legong dances. Bhakti yoga, involving chanting and kirtan (devotional music), is also popular.

Words Anshuka Parwani
In a world where ancient Indian wellness practices have found global acclaim, it's ironic that their modern avatars often surface in fleeting reels and polished Instagram posts. Yoga becomes a "backbend challenge", and Ayurveda is reduced to “quick fixes” for bloating or better skin. Yet the authentic power of these time-honoured traditions lies not in their photogenic quality or instant results, but in their depth and consistency - qualities that rarely make it to a trending video.
True wellness isn't built in a moment; it's cultivated slowly through consistent devotion. Practices like Trataka (candle meditation), Yoga Nidra (yogic rest), and Jal Neti (nasal cleansing) are not just ancient rituals; they're roadmaps to sustainable well-being in our overstimulated modern lives. These are not just solutions for ailments; they’re tools to realign our bodies and minds with nature’s rhythm.
Ancient Practices for Today
Beyond the mainstream yoga classes and celebrity-endorsed Ayurvedic products lie lesser-known practices with profound benefits for modern ailments. Several
UNLIKE
individuals I mentor, including actors and others, have benefitted significantly from these practices.
Trataka (candle meditation) offers a sanctuary for overwhelmed minds. This meditative practice involves focussing on a candle flame without blinking until tears form, then closing the eyes and visualising the flame internally. More than just a concentration exercise, Trataka calms the nervous system, enhances cognitive function, and provides relief from anxiety and insomnia - conditions that plague millions in our hyperconnected society.
Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) delivers what expensive sleep aids promise but rarely deliver: profound rest. This traditional guided meditation technique induces a state between wakefulness and slumber, where the body relaxes completely while the mind remains conscious. Just 20 minutes of Yoga Nidra can equal approximately two hours of deep sleep, making it invaluable for those battling stress, burnout, or insomnia, and can aid in restoring mental clarity and emotional balance. Regular practice promotes emotional regulation and immune function.
ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL FITNESS REGIMENS OR DIET PLANS,
TRADITIONAL
INDIAN WELLNESS
RECOGNISES THAT EACH PERSON CARRIES A UNIQUE CONSTITUTION AND LIFE CIRCUMSTANCE.
Jal Neti (nasal cleansing paired with oil pulling) addresses wellness from the inside out.
The practice of nasal cleansing using a saline solution, clears respiratory passages, preventing allergies and sinus infections while enhancing pranayama (breath work). Oil pulling — swishing cold-pressed oil in the mouth for several minutes — supports oral health, detoxifies the body, and strengthens the digestive system. In polluted urban environments, these practices serve as vital protective shields.
Personalised Wellness
What makes these ancient practices truly remarkable is their adaptability to individual needs. Unlike one-size-fits-all fitness regimens or diet plans, traditional Indian wellness recognises that each person carries a unique constitution and life circumstance. At Anshuka Yoga, we don’t begin with perfect poses. We
begin by listening. Every student arrives with a distinctive rhythm and yearning; some seeking recovery after injury, others desperate for genuine rest, and many simply trying to reconnect with their authentic selves.
This individualised approach explains why true practitioners never begin with complicated poses or advanced techniques. The journey starts with listening - to the body, to the breath, and the subtle cues that reveal what each person truly needs - even for our celebrity clients, be it Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt or Ananya Panday. These practices aren't mere techniques but rituals of returning to balance, to presence, and the self. Unlike viral fitness challenges that surge and fade, they offer sustainable pathways to wellness that have withstood centuries of testing.
The Star Practitioners
Alia Bhatt's post-pregnancy wellness journey exemplifies patience and mindfulness. Rather than rushing to “bounce back,” she focussed on rebuilding her foundation through consistent, gentle practice. Her approach prioritised tuning into her body's natural rhythm without external pressure. When she finally performed her first inversion nearly a year after pregnancy, it wasn't merely a physical achievement but a celebration of trust, discipline, and the power of gradual progress.
Kareena Kapoor Khan has maintained her relationship with Surya Namaskars (sun salutations) through various life phases and transformations. For her, yoga transcends physical movement; it's a practice of energy cultivation, breath awareness, and alignment. Through seasonal changes, career demands, and motherhood, her practice has remained her anchor.
Deepika Padukone, during pregnancy, relied on the simple Viparita Karani (legs-up-the-wall pose), which became a transformative ritual. Amidst her whirlwind schedule, this unassuming posture provided grounding, improved circulation, and a rare moment of stillness. The simplicity of her practice, a single pose approached with full presence, delivered more benefit than elaborate sequences performed with distraction. By sharing her experience publicly, she highlighted how even the most basic practices can become profound when approached with intention and regularity.
Ananya Panday, with her youthful energy and curiosity, took to Trataka as a tool of inner stillness. She discovered profound value in this meditative candlegazing technique. It became her moment of reflection and presence; a counterbalance to digital overwhelm and constant stimulation. Her experience demonstrates that even Gen Z, known to have shorter attention spans, hunger for authentic mindfulness practices.

Help at Hand
In an age of constant reinvention, perhaps the most revolutionary wellness approach is returning to time-tested wisdom. Their power lies not in their exoticism or complexity but in their profound simplicity, available to anyone willing to show up consistently, breath by breath.
A first-time yoga student, overwhelmed by anxiety, can find gradual transformation not through advanced postures but through regular Trataka practice.
For high corporate performers, Yoga Nidra provides restoration that no luxury spa treatment can replicate.
In modern urban chaos, practices like Jal Neti and oil pulling offer practical defence against environmental assaults. Frequent travellers can incorporate Jal Neti before long flights for a transformative experience.
WHISPERS OF
RENEWAL
I n Thailand’s quiet wilds, find a different kind of wellness, one not sold in glossy packages or promised through transformation. It's elemental.
Words Mila Supinskaya
In the gentle embrace of Thailand's coastal havens, I discovered a quiet restoration. Not a dramatic transformation or spiritual rebirth, but something more subtle; a gradual remembering of what it means to truly notice the world around me.
My journey to Thailand wasn't born from some desire for radical change. Rather, it emerged from a simple need to pause. After months of digital tethering, with my phone essentially functioning as an additional appendage and my thoughts constantly fragmented, I impulsively booked a trip that led me to the shores of Ko Samui.
There, I discovered a secluded wellness resort that seemed to be designed for those seeking invisibility. My room was nestled between imposing rock formations and trees with fragrant blossoms that transported me to childhood memories. The first morning on my balcony, ginger tea in hand, I observed a halftailed squirrel darting across the railing - a creature I affectionately named Raju. For the
first time in years, I found myself attuned to minute details, both in my surroundings and within myself.
Later in the day, the Ayurvedic massage proved unexpectedly revelatory. As Dao, my silent therapist, worked with herbal poultices, tears began to flow. No significant trigger; just an old tension finally releasing its grip.
The island's culinary pleasures were abundant but uncomplicated. I found myself savouring the same vegan pad thai at a familiar restaurant for three consecutive days. It was simple yet it had struck a chord!
During a beachside yoga session, the teacher offered a simple instruction that resonated deeply: "breathe softer." These words found their way to my refrigerator door as a daily reminder. I realised that healing often arrives not in dramatic revelations but in quiet moments, in ginger tea, in a squirrel named Raju, and in rediscovering the unhurried rhythm of one's breath!
Divine Serenity
Thailand is dotted with Buddhist sites and wellness sanctuaries, but few match the grandeur of Wat Muang in Hua Taphan, which is home to a colossal golden Buddha. Equally spectacular is Wat Mahathat, an impressive temple in Sukhothai. The historic town of Sukhothai is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Spots of Peace
Ko Lipe lies in the Andaman Sea's turquoise embrace, where Sunrise Beach offers nature's perfect meditation studio. As dawn breaks over distant islands, early risers find themselves alone with water-coloured skies and gentle waves lapping at the soft shores.
Ko Kradan presents a sliver of paradise with its uninterrupted stretch of pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs just offshore. Here, time slows to the rhythm of tides.
During low tide, a sandbar emerges, creating a natural pathway across turquoise waters that invites mindful walks through shallow pools teeming with marine life.
Ko Yao Noi stands as a testament to slow living amid the dramatic limestone formations of Phang Nga Bay. Bicycle paths wind through rubber plantations and rice paddies, leading to deserted beaches.
Ko Mak's palm-fringed shores offer retreat without renunciation, blending simple comfort with untouched natural beauty. The island is managed by a small group of families, who prioritise environmental protection over commercialisation.

Thailand in June offers lush landscapes, dramatic waterfalls, and reduced crowds. Later this year, attend a "Mindful Momentum" session in Koh Kood, being organised by JogaRetreats, to rejuvenate and find your inner balance.
Instant Calm
Nature's Sanctuary
Around 300 km from Bangkok lies Ko Kut (Koh Kood), Thailand's fourth-largest island yet remarkably preserved from modern encroachment. Among its thousand inhabitants, life flows according to timeless rhythms, creating a natural sanctuary for mindfulness practices. Unlike popular wellness retreats, Koh Kood doesn't manufacture mindfulness through scheduled programmes; it emanates from the environment itself.
Dawn invites solitary walks on pristine beaches, marked only by tiny crab tracks. Awareness deepens organically as visitors notice sunlight filtering through swaying palms and find their breath naturally aligning with the ocean's pulse.
The island's hidden waterfalls serve as nature's temples where afternoon pilgrimages lead to profound stillness. Beneath these cascading waters, the mental static of contemporary existence simply dissolves. In Koh Kood's unspoilt landscape, healing isn't something you pursue; it's something you remember.

F eeling on the verge of a digital burnout? Discover the silent wellness revolution taking root in monasteries and retreat centres around the world. Here are a few transformative escapes from Nepal and India.
Words Sara Dean
If you feel that your attention span is under attack, you're not imagining it. Research says, nearly half of us get distracted by mobile notifications or emails every 30 minutes, and a third of us, every 15!
This level of hyper connectivity isn’t just exhausting; it’s harmful. Studies link constant digital stimulation to anxiety, depression, insomnia, and even increased risk of cardiovascular issues. The brain never fully powers down, leading to mental fatigue, poor memory, and burnout. What was meant to help is now silently hurting. In response to this, silent vacations have emerged as a powerful wellness trend. With no connectivity with the outside world, except during emergencies, these holidays offer a break from the constant barrage of digital noise, allowing us to reconnect with ourselves and nature.

Silence in the Hills
Silent spiritual and meditation retreats offer profound benefits for the overstimulated modern mind. In the serene Himalayan foothills of Nepal, these restorative experiences take on an added dimension of tranquillity. I discovered this first-hand during a visit to Kopan Monastery on the outskirts of Kathmandu. My goal was to retreat into a silent cocoon and rediscover myself. Sitting in a lush Himalayan valley, the monastery’s extraordinary silence was enhanced by breathtaking mountain vistas and crisp, pure air that seemed to cleanse lungs and thoughts simultaneously
The Monastery Life
As I entered the monastery and gave up my mobile and other pieces of technology, I realised I would find here exactly what I needed - a complete disconnection from words, both spoken and digital. The monastery's peaceful grounds with magnificent trees gave me an immediate sense of tranquillity.
Generally, a day at the monastery began at dawn. Guests gathered in the meditation hall, as the first light illuminated the snow-capped peaks visible through large windows. Hours passed in guided meditation, focussing solely on breath and presence. Without the obligation of conversation, one noticed the senses heightening - the texture of a woollen shawl, the subtle variations in the mountain light, or the complex flavours of simple vegetarian meals. Afternoons were about walking around mindfully through the monastery gardens, each step intentional, and each moment fully experienced rather than merely observed.
By the third day, my initial restlessness had dissipated. My mind, typically racing with thoughts, began to clear like the Himalayan sky after monsoon rains. I felt at peace.
The Paradise
While a retreat with rustic facilities at the Buddhist monastery was my calling, for those who prefer a more premium stay, the region offers numerous wellness retreats, where one can delve into mindfulness, silent reflection, and meditation while enjoying more conventional comforts. I had stumbled upon the ancient town of Dhulikhel, whose name poetically translates to a “place where tigers play,” and it holds centuries of rich history. Once a vital trading route pit-stop, this Newari town sits like a jewel in Nepal's crown, about an hour's drive from bustling Kathmandu. Its authentic culture remains remarkably preserved, offering visitors a genuine glimpse into traditional Nepalese life against the backdrop of breathtaking Himalayan panoramas. Dwarika's
Resort in Dhulikhel stands as a premier example, a holistic lifestyle retreat blending Vedic philosophy and Buddhist medicine in luxurious surroundings. It offers unique wellness areas - the Himalayan Rock Salt House, the Rock Crystal Chamber, a stunning Meditation Maze and sound chambers. The true magic of Dhulikhel, however, isn't in any single landmark. It resides in a profound stillness that permeates everything; a serenity that feels both ancient and immediate.
Dhulikhel is a trekker’s haven. A short hike leads to the hilltop Goddess Kali temple. Nearby stands the Namobuddha monastery, one of Nepal’s most sacred Buddhist sites located in Kavre district. Around an hour away is the Pullahari Monastery near Kathmandu, another popular spiritual site. All images are for visual representation only

Tucked away in the peaceful hills of Uttarakhand, Kilbury offers an invitation to embrace the Japanese ritual of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing.
Words Dipika Sinha
High above Uttarakhand’s popular hill stations, in the quiet embrace of the Himalayas, lie soul-soothing forests of ancient deodar and oak. Just beyond Nainital, amid whispering pines and mossy trails, the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, finds a perfect home; offering calm, clarity, and a gentle return to balance.
The Experience
As you drive into the fringes of the Kilbury forest, just about eight kilometres from the bustling Pangot village, tall deodars stand like silent sentinels, and ancient oaks lean in, forming a welcome arch. This is where trained professionals help you find peace in the form of a ritualistic walk through the forest. The experience is conducted individually, maximum with a couple. The forest bathing guide meets you at the trailhead and the unique journey begins.
The instructions are simple – walk slowly, mind your step, pause and mindfully soak in the surroundings. Take in a few deep breaths and you will almost taste the freshness of the forest air. Deep breathing instantly calms your heart and your senses come alive. You soon realise this is not any other mountain hike, and there is no rush to the finish line.
The Forest and You
With each gentle step, the forest reveals itself. You hear the chirping of birds, the gentle crunch of leaves under your feet, the flutter of wings as a startled treepie takes flight; and the sounds of the forest

echoing through the canopy. As you move deeper into the green, it feels magical. Slivers of sunlight make their way through boughs and leaves, forming golden streaks overhead as they cast a lace-like shadow on the forest floor. You soon realise how awakened your senses have become.
Off the Grid
As you walk, following the gentle voice of your guide, you are gradually able to block out the world. The highway horns are too far off, the tourist jeeps bypass these winding routes and your phone falls silent to the world. “Let your feet feel the un-evenness of the entangled roots, the soft moss, and the roughness of the fallen leaves,” offers the guide.
You are invited to follow your intuitionperhaps a twisted oak catches your eye. You sit beside it, fingers tracing its bark, watching a ladybird wander across a leaf. The breeze brings the scent of pine, damp earth, and dried leaves, strangely new, and
almost sacred. Eyes closed, you breathe it all in. The forest is no longer just around you; it’s within.
After the walk, the guide gathers everyone to share their stories. Some speak of sunbeams and delicate leaves; others of how the forest made them delve into their soul. A few stay silent, and that too is part of the experience. Next, you are led to a nearby meadow, where the guide invites everyone to lie on the grass and simply be. The earth cradles you, as every breath syncs with its quiet rhythm. In this stillness, time fades, and for a moment, you’re fully, deeply present.
The session concludes with tea - fragrant leaves simmered over a wood fire and infused with foraged herbs. As you step away from Kilbury, there’s a quiet shift within you. Something feels lighter, clearer, and more at ease. The forest has done what it always does - healed you, gently, and without a word.

Where the Winds Pray
I n Ladakh, silence is sacred, the mountains are sentient, and the wind carries centuries of stories through sunlit valleys. This summer, as you wander through its stunning landscape, follow the quiet trails and discover the unseen.
Quaint Buddhist traditions across Ladakh often transport you to a meditative realm. Monks draped in loose robes attract attention from afar, beckoning into a carefully shielded world. Seen here (right) are young monks at Phyang Monastery located close to Leh. Complementing the monastic legacy is the stunning backdrop of Ladakh, dotted with turquoise lakes and unspoiled landscapes (facing page).
Another stunningly beautiful region is Zanskar (above), with mountain passes and mesmerising views. It is one of the least interfered with microcosms of Ladakh with unique culture and traditions. A popular site is the azure Pangong Lake (right), which stands in sharp contrast to the red-hued rugged mountainscape. Stay in wood cabins overlooking the lake, and meet local people, and spot yaks along the way.

LONGEVITY ISN’T JUST FOR BILLIONAIRES
C utting-edge biohacking makes personalised, preventive health possible for everyone, not just the super-rich.
The Science
Want to live longer and overcome your inherited disease risks? Taking control of your health has never been easier. While American tech mogul Bryan Johnson makes headlines, spending millions on anti-ageing and biohacking, the self-directed science of optimising your body and mind through evidencebased techniques, is now accessible to everyone, not just the ultra-wealthy.
The first step is to get personalised genomic wellness solutions to help analyse genetic predispositions and metabolic profiles for tailored solutions.
• Genomic wellness solutions like Vieroots Eplimo identify risks for 250+ lifestyle diseases through genetic testing and metabolic assessment, then recommend personalised lifestyle modifications — diet, exercise, yoga, and meditation — to prevent disease and optimise performance. Following genomic lifestyle changes for just three months can yield measurable improvements.
• Wearable devices like Trigr smart ring, CGM, and Trigr health app continuously monitor your metrics through AI face scans and deliver real-time health metrics at a fraction of previous costs.
• Certain biohacking tools use salivabased genetic testing to identify inherent health risks. AI processes this complex data, powering specialised programmes like Optimise My Sugar, Optimise My Age, Optimise My Liver, and India's first DNA-based weight loss module, Optimise My Weight.
The Economics
• Sophisticated biohacking centres now offer cutting-edge therapies like Pulsed Electromagnetic Field treatment and Red Light Therapy under medical supervision, with facility investments ranging from s1-3 crore. There are also expensive longevity protocols like NAD IV infusions (s35,000-50,000 per session).
• Genetic testing is available at approximately s35,400 per client; a one-time investment compared to recurring health insurance premiums.
• Practices like “earthing” (walking barefoot on natural surfaces), breath work, oil pulling or swishing virgin coconut oil in your mouth to extract toxins and improve oral health, and dietary modifications require no financial investment.
Nair, a biohacking and human performance expert, authored the bestseller, The Making of a Superhuman. He founded Vieroots, launching Eplimo, a personalised epigenetic lifestyle modification solution. As a peak performance consultant and biohacking evangelist, he's curated the World Biohack Summit in Dubai for two consecutive years.

A PREMIUM DESTINATION SHAPING INDIA'S HEALTHCARE
Dr. Dilip G Naik, Pro Vice Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Mangalore
MAHE Mangalore has long been recognized for its strengths in health sciences. How is the campus redefining this legacy?
MAHE Mangalore has been actively shaping the healthcare education. We are now placing equal emphasis on adaptability, innovation, and social relevance. Our curriculum is shifting toward outcome-based education, where competencies in problem solving, critical thinking, ethics and empathy are as valued as technical skills. We’re integrating emerging fields like genomics, artificial intelligence, and data-driven healthcare into our programs.
With multiple institutions under one umbrella — medicine, dentistry and allied health — how does MAHE Mangalore promote interdisciplinary collaboration?
We believe that the best patient outcomes emerge when healthcare professionals work as cohesive teams and that starts with how they’re trained. At MAHE Mangalore, students across disciplines attend shared seminars, collaborate on real-world case studies, and work together in simulation labs that mirror clinical settings. Faculty members cosupervise interdepartmental research projects and frequently host cross-
disciplinary workshops on healthcare innovation. These interactions not only break down academic silos but also teach students to value diverse perspectives, fostering a culture of teamwork.
Mangalore has a rich cultural and educational heritage. How does the campus integrate this into the student experience?
We view Mangalore’s heritage as an educational asset. Students learn in a setting steeped in tradition, yet dynamic and forward-thinking. Community engagement is woven into our programs— whether through coastal health outreach, maternal and child health camps in rural
areas, or collaborations with local NGOs. Cultural festivals and language immersion activities promote inclusion and connection. Importantly, our learners understand that to treat a patient effectively, they must first understand the person — culture, values, and community included.
MAHE Mangalore caters significantly to postgraduate education. How do you ensure research, clinical exposure, and innovation are seamlessly interwoven into it?
Our postgraduate programs are structured to blur the lines between research, clinical practice, and innovation. From day one, students are immersed in hands-on clinical responsibilities under the mentorship of experienced faculty. They’re also expected to participate in institutional
research projects, publish in peerreviewed journals, and present at international conferences. We offer access to advanced labs, patent support offices, and interdisciplinary innovation hubs where students can prototype ideas and test solutions.
What international collaborations or exchanges does MAHE Mangalore currently engage in to keep students future-ready?
MAHE Mangalore actively fosters international academic relationships with institutions in USA, UK Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand. These partnerships facilitate student and faculty exchanges, collaborative research initiatives, clinical immersion programs, and even dualdegree opportunities. These experiences expose students to varied healthcare systems, cultural contexts, and technological innovations.
Given the campus’s proximity to major hospitals, how does real-world clinical training shape a student's journey?
The USP of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, is that it has a partnership
with Government hospitals in Mangaluru. This partnership is 70 years old and one of the most successful public private partnerships in health care in India. This assures abundance of clinical material, hands-on experience and vast research potential. Located next to tertiary hospitals, specialty centers, and community clinics, MAHE Mangalore ensures students are exposed to patient care early and often. This clinical immersion happens progressively: from observing and assisting in year one to managing complex cases under supervision as they advance. They also encounter the nuances — how to counsel an anxious family, how to respond during an emergency, and how to work within a team.
What are some recent initiatives at MAHE Mangalore aimed at enhancing student wellness, infrastructure, or digital transformation?
We’re reimagining the campus as a space that supports the mind, body, and intellect of students. We’ve introduced smart classrooms, AI-enabled diagnostic simulators, and e-learning platforms. We’ve established ergonomic consultation clinics, mental health counseling units, mindfulness spaces, and peer support groups to help students navigate stress. Teacher guardian system also ensures personal well-being apart from academics.
In what ways is the campus leveraging technology, AI, or telemedicine to transform teaching and patient care?
We’re fully invested in creating a tech-forward campus. AI is being used in radiology interpretation, predictive analytics for diagnostics, and personalized learning modules. Telemedicine units enable outreach to underserved populations across Karnataka and beyond, with students assisting in virtual consultations and follow-ups. We’ve integrated electronic health records into clinical training and launched virtual simulation labs where learners can practice high-risk procedures in low-risk environments.
