THE DEEP WORK FORMULA CREATE. GROW. THRIVE —

ONE FOCUSED MOMENT AT A TIME!

In this enlightening interview, Dr. Manimekalai Mohan, Founder of SSVM Group of Institutions, reveals the power of the Deep Work Mindset — an approach that equips individuals, from students to professionals, to overcome distractions and achieve extraordinary success through focused, intentional effort.

How does Deep Work empower ordinary individuals to achieve extraordinary results?

Deep Work is a silent superpower that levels the playing field. Begin with simple strategies like Time Blocking — just 30 minutes of distraction-free focus can spark transformation. Deep Work builds discipline, expertise, and pride in what you do.

How can students and professionals across fields use Deep Work to elevate their careers?

In any profession — from teaching and coding to writing or business — Deep Work elevates quality, clarity, and creativity. It helps individuals cut through noise and focus on what truly matters. Whether a teacher designing an impactful lesson, a doctor researching without distractions, or a designer immersed in creative flow — that’s Deep Work in motion. Students trained in Deep Work will excel in complex skills, problem-solving, and innovation, fostering career success and personal

fulfilment. Try the “90-Minute Deep Work Sprint,” the “Shutdown Ritual,” or the “Ivy Lee Method.”

Why is Deep Work essential for entrepreneurial parents navigating work and family life?

For parents, time and attention are always in short supply. Deep Work offers a powerful remedy — intentional presence. Children develop deep work habits through focused tasks like reading, puzzles, music, and projects, guided by parents and teachers, fostering discipline, curiosity, and meaningful effort. By scheduling focused “Dual Deep Blocks,” productivity rises

and stress drops. Unplugging during family time fosters genuine emotional connection. Introducing “Tech-Free Zones” and a daily “Family Focus Hour” builds a rhythm of balance, not burnout.

Can Deep Work spark social and cultural transformation at a larger level?

Absolutely. When a culture embraces Deep Work, it shifts from constant hustle to purposeful progress. A nation where students, professionals, creators, and leaders value focused effort becomes rich in innovation and integrity. A generation skilled in deep thinking can drive breakthroughs in technology, healthcare, climate solutions, and governance. Envision a society where teachers teach with intent, builders craft with pride, and leaders act with clarity. Schools can introduce “Focus Periods” for deep learning; workplaces can adopt “No-Meeting Mornings” and reward meaningful output. Promote “Digital Sabbaths” for rest and creativity.

How does Deep Work help us achieve our larger vision while maintaining the quality of our daily responsibilities?

No matter how demanding your daily routines, responsibilities, or essential tasks may be, when you commit to Deep Work for your larger vision, something remarkable happens. Apply “The 4DX Framework” — identify your Wildly Important Goal and eliminate what doesn’t align. In deep focus, the mind enters a flow state, reducing decision fatigue, enhancing emotional balance, and building confidence through meaningful progress. You'll find that by dedicating focused time to your bigger goals, you gain the clarity and space to continue fulfilling your everyday duties without compromise. As you progress towards your larger vision, you realise that Deep Work not only helps you achieve that bigger dream but also empowers you to maintain high standards in your daily responsibilities. Looking back, you’ll truly appreciate how Deep Work has helped you balance both excellence and contentment.

OFF THE FIELD, ON POINT

C ricketing icon Yuvraj Singh unveils his favourite Queenstown escapes, where luxury, adventure, and soulful moments come together effortlessly.

Legendary Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh can never be far away from the world of cricket. As Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 unfolds, Singh remains very much in the thick of things, with his protégées, including Abhishek Sharma of team Sunrisers Hyderabad, thanking the iconic cricketer for shaping careers.

“IPL 2025 is buzzing with young talent - so many youngsters are raring to go, hungry to make their mark. What’s great to see is how franchises are backing them, and giving them the platform and the confidence. The league just keeps getting bigger, better, and more exciting every season. It’s the perfect stage for the next generation of cricketing stars,” says an excited Singh.

Beyond mentoring young players at his academy, Yuvraj Singh Centres of Excellence, Singh is deeply involved in social causes, particularly through his NGO YouWeCan Foundation, which supports the fight against cancer.

Singh's love for food and travel is equally well-known. In fact, Yuvi, as he is fondly called, has often spoken about his love for traditional dishes like kadhi-chawal and rajma-chawal. Now, he’s taken that passion a step further with the launch of his new restaurant, KOCA (Kitchen of Celebratory Arts) in Gurugram.

Words Veenu Singh

“Food has always been personal to me, right from my mom’s home-cooked meals to discovering different cuisines during my travels. I always wanted to create a space where food isn’t just something you eat; it’s something you celebrate. That’s how KOCA was born. I wanted to bring the joy, warmth, and flair of global and Indian flavours under one roof in a way that reflects who I am today,” says Singh. He adds, “From Kadhi Chawal Risotto to Rajma Avocado Galouti, every dish tells a story, many of them from my life!” The

restaurant uses local ingredients and also offers a thoughtfully curated vegan section. And his personal favourite? “Kadhi Chawal Risotto - it takes me back to my childhood,” he smiles.

Travel is another passion close to Singh's heart. He considers himself fortunate that cricket gave him the opportunity to visit many countries. But his favourite getaway is Queenstown in New Zealand. “It's truly special!” he says.

briefing

“If you’re an adventure junkie, bungee jumping, skydiving, or jet boating in Shotover Canyon is a must. Those not chasing a thrill can take the Skyline Gondola and watch the city from above. Lake Wakatipu is perfect for walks or just soaking in the view. If you get a chance, drive out to Glenorchy. It’s one of the most scenic drives in the world,” reveals Singh.

Evening Muse

Queenstown is, hands down, the most beautiful city I’ve ever visited. It feels like it's straight out of a movie. Every frame looks cinematic — the mountains, the lake, the stillness — and it all hits differently. There’s a sense of calm, of being away from the noise, and yet, it has a quiet energy that stays with you,” says Singh.

“You will find many places with DJs and dance floors. If you prefer a laid-back evening, there are cosy bars by the waterfront where you can unwind with a drink. Queenstown is all about good vibes,” Singh adds.

Singh loves shopping in places that blend style and comfort. He says, “I’d check out O’Connell’s Building and then head to Remarkables Park Town Centre for a laid-back experience. The Creative Queenstown Art and Craft Market is a must-visit."

Kelimutu Crater Lakes

High in Flores, colourshifting crater lakes crown Mount Kelimutu. Locals say they hold ancestral spirits; science points to volcanic minerals and gases. Either way, it’s magic.

What Else

Hike Mount Bromo’s crater, surf in Uluwatu, chase waterfalls in Ubud, or go on a day trip to Komodo National Park to meet the eponymous dragons. For a true escape, sail to Kai (Kei) or Togean islands.

LIVEABOARD DIVING TRIP Indonesia

A liveaboard dive trip in Indonesia is the ultimate underwater adventure. With your boat doubling as a floating home, complete with cosy cabins and communal spaces, you gain seamless access to some of the world’s most remote and spectacular dive sites. No need to return to the shore; just dive, dine, and drift.

Start at Komodo National Park, where manta rays glide through current-swept channels. Journey to Raja Ampat, a diver’s dream with a riot of reef life, where each plunge feels like entering a living kaleidoscope. Craving solitude? Alor’s untouched reefs offer wild beauty without the crowds. Or sail into the Banda Sea, where volcanic islands, coral gardens, and echoes of ancient trade routes await. This is diving, redefined.

UNDERWATER STAY

The Maldives

Imagine lying in bed, eyes wide open, as a reef shark glides silently overhead. In the Maldives, underwater stays turn this surreal vision into reality. Some suites descend over 16 ft below sea level, immersing you in a dreamlike world with floor-to-ceiling windows that reveal the ocean’s quiet drama. Prefer to stay dry while dining? Choose an underwater restaurant or wine cellar, where every bite is accompanied by the graceful drift of angelfish beyond panoramic glass walls.

Craving an escape that feels otherworldly? Let the Muraka at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island or Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas be your next plunge into the deep; it's luxury reimagined beneath the waves.

Vaadhoo Island

DESERT ICE BATH

Abu Dhabi

It might sound like a contradiction — ice and desert in the same sentence — but in Abu Dhabi, you can encounter this blend of extreme elements for a truly transformative experience. Rooted in the belief that water holds powerful therapeutic properties, an ice bath is often paired with yoga, sound healing, or guided meditation sessions, forming a part of a broader wellness journey. Cold immersion enhances this effect, prompting deep, conscious breathing and stimulation of the nervous system. The result? Heightened mental clarity, increased resilience, and a noticeable reduction in stress. And if you want to try this experience, you can head to Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara.

What Else

Beyond its glitzy skyline and desert stretches, Abu Dhabi offers a rich mix of adventure and serene experiences. Paddle through Abu Dhabi’s tranquil mangroves while spotting native birds and fish along the way. Craving adventure? Yas Island offers a large number of exhilarating rides, slides, and splash-filled attractions.

Jebel Hafit

For an adrenaline rush, drive or cycle up Jebel Hafit, the UAE’s second-highest peak. Located on the outskirts of Al Ain, this mountain offers panoramic views of the desert and the cityscape via a winding road renowned for its scenic beauty.

WATER ADVENTURES

For those who crave adrenaline served with a side of stark Himalayan beauty, a whitewater rafting or kayaking expedition in Ladakh is exhilarating. With the Indus and Zanskar rivers cutting through deep gorges and barren, windswept mountains, Ladakh offers some of the most dramatic river runs. Best attempted between June and September, the Zanskar River, with a mix of rapids, is a favourite among seasoned kayakers and rafters. The river routes wind through remote villages, towering rock faces, and ancient monasteries improbably perched on cliff edges. Rafting and kayaking are more than water sports; they are a deep dive into Ladakh’s raw, untamed landscape.

What Else

Beyond the paddle, take a deep dive into Ladakh’s unique culture. Wander through ancient monasteries like Hemis and Thiksey, trek the rugged trails of Markha or Sham valleys, visit traditional Ladakhi homes, or immerse yourself in vibrant local culture at festivals like Hemis Tsechu.

Nubra Valley

In the burgeoning artisanal ice cream scene, innovation runs as deep as the rich flavours. At Soft Serve Company in Chennai, co-founder Anush Rajasekaran crafts culinary curiosities, from coconut to charcoal tahini. Here, there's a story hidden in every scoop — elevating options like vanilla fries to keep customers coming back for more, proving that adventurous palates are definitely on the rise.

Native Flavours

In this dessert landscape, Gurugam's Wild & Raw specialises in farm-to-scoop methodology, delivering gelato that sings of terroir with local ingredients like Idukki chocolate and Kerala vanilla. Their classic Taylor machine churns out smooth, luscious textures in a mere 12 minutes — an ode to Italian craftsmanship that places fresh ingredients at the forefront. At Lupa in Bengaluru, gelato dreams come true, courtesy of a vintage Cattabriga machine that freezes flavour in its tracks.

But let's not overlook the quirky charm of brands like Mumbai-based Bombay Sweet Shop, which have made soft serves trendy again. With a throwback to '90s nostalgia, flavours like nolen gur and thandai take centre stage, celebrating India's love for traditional sweetness in a modern carton. At Mozimo Chocolates, Chandigarh, every scoop recalls a lost tale, blending India's rich culinary traditions with adventurous creativity. "We love to surprise our guests with new flavours," says Priyanka Gupta, co-owner of Mozimo. "Some visitors come several times a week, so we rotate offerings to keep them guessing," she adds.

The restaurant chain Burma Burma takes your taste buds on a whimsical ride through nostalgia! This pan-India gem celebrates childhood memories through unique flavours that delight both millennials and Gen Z. Their Pineapple Energee is a creamy homage to after-school drinks, topped with crunchy brown butter crumble. Or the Avocado & Honey ice cream, where the luscious richness of avocado meets the sweetness of honey caviar. “Crafted with care and small-batch love, these artisanal delights weave together sweetness and sentiment, ensuring each scoop is

not just a dessert, but a joyous trip down memory lane”, says Ankit Gupta, founder of Burma Burma.

World of Cool

This ice cream revolution is not just taking place in India. Giapo in Auckland, New Zealand, elevates frozen treats into edible art — quirky creations like the BatCone and Colossal Squid blur boundaries between dessert, culture, and imagination. It’s more than ice cream; it’s a playful journey where creativity reigns supreme.

Jordi Roca, Spain's celebrated Michelin Star chef — recognised as one of the world's top pastry maestros — has reimagined ice cream at Rocambolesc, his innovative dessert outpost in Houston, USA. Think cigar-smoke infusions, toasted brioche panets, and sorbets inspired by flower festivals. Quirky, brilliant, and unapologetically fun, Roca’s creations blend whimsy with technique and finesse, delivering dessert dreams.

“We go one step further, elevating the ice cream with toppings that add diverse textures and layers of flavour, making it into a dessert experience built around the ice cream itself. Inspiration can come from anywhere: a childhood memory, a trip we’ve taken, an unexpected fruit or ingredient — even another dessert. From there, we adapt it to our field,” shares Roca.

It seems the ice cream world is on a fast spin. The Soneva Fushi resort in the Maldives offers a 24/7 complimentary ice cream room. What makes it even cooler (pun most definitely intended) is that many of Soneva’s icy creations are dairy-free, sugar-free, glutenfree, and plant-based — proof that indulgence doesn’t need to come with compromise.

Health at Heart

While ice cream is traditionally sweetened with sugar, many are now reimagining the dessert with healthier alternatives. Nestled in the bustling Indiranagar neighbourhood of Bengaluru, Lavonne Ice Cream Kitchen (Lick)

takes the ice cream experience to new heights. This vibrant outlet redefines the ordinary with a wide array of high-protein, no-added-sugar options that appeal to the health-conscious, while also offering delightful flavours for the younger crowd. From the delicious Pecan Pie that swirls with caramel dreams to their standout Smoked Chocolate scoop, each creation is an invitation to indulge guiltfree. And for pup parents, there’s even a dogfriendly “Drool Bowl” to ensure no furry friend gets left out of the fun!

Plant-based ice cream is the cool kid of the dessert world — churned from almond, coconut, or oat milk, it’s winning over vegans, lactose-avoiders, and sustainability enthusiasts. With more flexitarians and ecoconscious diners on board, restaurants are embracing it enthusiastically. Not a passing fad, this trend’s here to scoop and stay, effortlessly incorporating modern flavours without giving up on nostalgia.

WATCHING OVER GENEVA

I n this bustling Swiss city, where alpine waters kiss cobblestone shores, master horologists have transformed time itself into art, crafting mechanical poetry from the language of minutes and hours.

Words Kalpana Sunder

Wanderland OutBound

Along Geneva's shimmering waterfront blooms the enchanting L'horloge Fleurie (the Flower Clock) — a living masterpiece where 12,000 flowers and plants transform timekeeping into art. Since 1955, this botanical clock has captivated visitors, its face reinventing itself with each seasonal shift, tempting countless cameras to capture its ephemeral beauty.

This floral timekeeper stands as a perfect emblem of Geneva's soul; a city where horology flows through every cobblestone and facade. This passion for timekeeping blossomed when Huguenot refugees arrived, their watchmaking mastery transforming Geneva's destiny within just a few generations. Now, public clocks adorn nearly every corner of this diplomatic haven, from imposing tower faces to discreet architectural gems and ancient sundials — silent narrators connecting present to past in a city, where fine chocolates and precision instruments share equal reverence, and time itself becomes a celebration.

The History

Watchmaking in Geneva got a fillip when John Calvin or Jean Calvin, a prominent figure in the Protestant Reformation, banned any show of wealth in the 16th century and so, wearing jewellery, which was considered ostentatious, was prohibited. This forced the jewellers and goldsmiths out of their jobs. But pocket watches and practical scientific instruments were allowed.

The craftsmen took advantage of this loophole and put their creative energies into embellishing these watches, and this was the origin of Geneva's watchmaking tradition. In the 18th century, farmers in the Jura region started making watch components during harsh winters, and this led to prolific growth in the industry.

The Time

Today, everything in Geneva seems to have a connection to time. My local guide, Emilie Bissardon, tells me that small watchmaking workshops or cabinotiers (elite horological craftsmen) were based in Saint-Gervais district. She points to the narrow, tall buildings and explains, "As they needed as much sunlight as possible to carry out their precise tasks, they moved to the top floors of the buildings, which had many small windows."

Even the iconic Jet d'eau – the fountain that spouts from Lake Geneva into the air –has a connection to watchmaking. "Many watchmakers settled near the Rhone River to use hydraulic energy, and the pressurised water enabled a number of watchmaking processes to be mechanised," explains Bissardon, adding, "at the end of the day, there was too much water pressure, so they installed an open-air outlet allowing the water to spout skywards and release the pressure. This slowly transformed into a tourist attraction by 1891."

Along the glitzy Rue du Rhône, the most prestigious watch brands vie with one another. Bucherer has been Switzerland's market leader for over a century, offering the biggest selection of Rolex watches in addition to scores of other well-known luxury brands. At Passage Malbuisson, lined with shops, is the clock designed by Edward Wirth; its 16 bell chimes play a traditional Genevan melody every hour. Below the clock dial, a door opens – and you see 42 bronze figurines and 13 chariots marching in, portraying the L'Escalade – the successful defense of Geneva against the Duke of Savoy's troops on December 12, 1602.

The showstopper on the time-keeping trail is the Patek Philippe Museum, housed in a

The

Museum

The guide at the Patek museum, Sieglinde Muller, who shows us around, tells us how Polish immigrant Antoine Norbert de Patek arrived in Geneva in 1839 and was soon making watches for Europe's monarchs. The exhibits are exquisite, including gem-encrusted pocket watches, the first wristwatches, music boxes, watches shaped like a stack of books, guns, musical instruments, butterflies, and even knives. Muller explains that at first the clocks and watches did not keep time accurately but slowly over time they were refined to be more precise. Many of these timekeepers have over 300 parts and take around 150 hours to make; sometimes watchmakers work up to 2,000 hours on their masterpieces, sawing, drilling, and polishing. One watch, called the Patek Philippe Calibre 89, was made to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the company and has 33 complications and 1,728 components in total, including a thermometer and a star chart!

It is said the wristwatch was considered feminine jewellery until the First World War, when men started wearing watches on the wrist in the trenches. Closely connected to timekeeping were the mechanical musical boxes that were made in the Jura mountains by farmer families. Muller tells us how Swatch saved the Swiss watch market with its analogue quartz watch in 1983!

Near the museum, it's at Quai du Mont Blanc, the legendary Watchmakers' Quay, where horological royalty stands in an elegant procession. Here, along the charming shore of Lake Geneva, the city invites you to relish a visual feast — blooming flowers, striking sculptures, open-air art installations and on clear days, sweeping views of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps! As the lake's water ripples and swans glide like living timepieces, Geneva's romance with chronometry endures, a city where seconds aren't merely counted but celebrated, and where time itself is crafted into poetry of motion.

BEYOND

BLUE HORIZONS

Tucked across the Beas River, near Manali town, is a peaceful Himalayan hamlet called Vashisht , where time slows down, stories linger, and the mountains gently whisper in your ears.

Words Olya Marik
Image: A village home near Vashisht

Image: incredibleindia.gov.in

My trip to Vashisht isn’t part of my original itinerary; more of a whispered suggestion than a destination. “Visit if you want to slow down and find some peace,” says one friend. And after several busy and boisterous days in Manali, “slowing down in peace” sounds perfect. The small hamlet of Vashisht sits just across the Beas River, a short auto ride from the main market in Manali. But once you reach, it doesn’t feel close to anything. Hedged by tall conifers and high mountains, Vashisht seems to be suspended in the past. The main road winds upwards, weaving through old houses. The air is still with the kind of silence you only find in remote mountain villages. The quiet is punctuated by a group of women passing by with large bundles of grass on their backs –their bodies bent over to balance the burden but their smiles untarnished by their task. One of them laughs and asks for a picture, before I can ask her for one. Tiny and wrapped in thick Himachali wool, her nose pin catches the sun, matching the shimmer of her eyes and her honest smile.

Vashisht is built on stories. It's named after Sage Vashisht, one of the revered Saptarishis (sages) and Lord Rama's teacher. It's believed the sage had sought solace by the Beas. The river cradled and calmed him. Locals narrate many tales – of how the great sage and his wife lived and meditated in this village – and point to the ancient temples dotting the surroundings as proof. The shrines are dedicated to Lord Rama, Sage Vashisht,

HEDGED BY TALL TREES AND HIGH MOUNTAINS, VASHISHT SEEMS TO BE SUSPENDED IN THE PAST. THE AIR IS STILL WITH THE KIND OF SILENCE YOU ONLY FIND IN REMOTE MOUNTAIN VILLAGES.

and other deities. The most prominent is the Vashisht Temple, which is believed to be over 4,000 years old. The quaint temple is built in traditional Himalayan architecture style, adorned with intricate wood carvings and paintings. Devotees throng the temple, coming from far and wide. During the annual Birshu Mela organised in April, villagers carry their gods in decorated palanquins. The atmosphere is of joy, with traditional music, dance and much rejoicing!

The second most popular attraction in the village are the hot springs. Located just behind the temple, with separate bathing sections for men and women, the water is said to have medicinal and healing properties. The women’s bath area is usually quiet, the water surface draped in swirls of steam, with sunlight filtering in and creating hypnotising patterns on the stones at the edge. The water is stinging hot, and I ease in slowly. But after a few minutes, my nerves are soothed, almost lulling me to sleep.

I stay much longer than planned. As I step out, I feel as if I have dropped behind something heavy in the water. The cold air feels good. I walk back to my homestay with wet hair and warm skin, feeling like I have washed away some burden.

In Vashisht, most houses are built in the old way – with stone walls, cedar blocks and stables on the ground floor. The residents live upstairs. Some of the rooftops are home to cafes, which glow at night with fairy lights and soft music. It’s the kind of place that holds you without trying to. The steps of the

homes and temples are worn from years of use. The wood feels sun-warmed and slightly smooth when you lean. Even the wind carries something - stone, herbs, smoke, and a bit of pine. In the evening, you can sit in a rooftop café with ginger tea and watch the clouds float by. That’s how a day's itinerary looks like, and it's enough.

Manali’s close, but different. Even in just two days, Vashisht slows something in me. Maybe that’s what it does. Vashisht doesn't try to impress. It pulls you in and heals you, making sure you are tempted to return.

Must-try

Natural hot spring bath behind the temple (separate bathing areas for men and women).

Don’t miss Café Nirvana Deluxe Roof-Top’s lemon ginger cake along with stunning views.

Best time to visit March to June, or postmonsoon, from September to November.

Getting there

Vashisht is a short 15-minute rickshaw ride or drive from Manali’s main market.

Anant National University empowers aspiring designers from diverse backgrounds by of fering ADEPT in 10 languages: Dr Anunaya Chaubey

Inclusive design education is gaining recognition and importance. How is Anant National University's multilingual entrance test, ADEPT, different?

Anant Design Entrance and Proficiency Test (ADEPT) is India's first and only multilingual design entrance test, conducted in 10 languages, including English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Punjabi. It is for the first time in India that any design institution checks for aptitude in creativity and innovation in languages other than English, which is the norm.

This initiative shows Anant's commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities for aspiring designers from diverse linguistic backgrounds. By expanding assessment options, Anant fosters inclusivity and democratises access to design education, opening doors to a broader range of talent. ADEPT assesses a candidate's critical thinking, design aptitude, holistic approach and overall awareness of societal and global dynamics.

How has ADEPrs multilingual nature impacted the diversity make-up of Anant students?

In December 2023, Anant introduced ADEPT to give students a chance to showcase their creative talent and critical thinking potential in a language they are most comfortable with.

The result created history for us as we welcomed the largest Bachelor of Design class in our young history with

475 young, creative and brilliant minds from 4 nationalities, 30 Indian states and 283 cities. 77% of the Class of 2028 identifies as female.

Other than brilliant academic achievers, the batch has a Guinness world record holder, a Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar awardee, international English Olympiad gold medalists, entrepreneurs, artists and film producers.

What impact do inclusivity and diversity have on the overall design landscape?

Since onlyl5% of the Indian population speaks or is fluent in English, limiting design education to this language excludes a vast pool of talent. However, ADEPT enables young minds from diverse cultural backgrounds to enter the design mainstream, giving them access to formal design education. Combining their artistic and traditional knowledge with contemporary design training unlocks new possibilities and perspectives, enriching the creative landscape.

The cross-pollination of ideas among designers from different cultures will introduce fresh concepts, leading to innovation and new creative avenues.

Planet of the Wild

N umerous wild species roam this region – some spotted from afar w ith their vivid coats while others are camouflaged by vegetation. T his is Kenya, endowed with some of the most iconic wildlife r eserves in the world. As the dry season sets in and animals traverse t he region in search of sustenance, it offers a perfect opportunity to e mbark on a safari.

In southern Kenya, around three-and-a-half hours from Nairobi airport, lies Amboseli National Park, the abode of African elephants, who roam stunning landscapes in the backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is also home to some of other Big Five members. In the picture is a herd of majestic elephants making their way to the swamp area in the soft morning light, accompanied by a gentle veil of drifting clouds.

Africa's extraordinary biodiversity can be experienced at the famed Maasai Mara National Reserve, in southwestern Kenya along the Tanzanian border. Spanning around 1,510 sq. km, it boasts spectacular ecosystems that inhabit the large stretches of savanna grasslands. From lions (below) to cheetahs and giraffes, the landscape offers a close view of various species, making it a sought-after destination for adventure enthusiasts and photographers alike. A popular member of this forest is a cheetah named Nashipai, seen with her cubs in the picture (right). The nearly five-hour road trip from Nairobi to Maasai Mara through the scenic Great Rift Valley is also a memorable experience.

In Amboseli National Park, Kenya, lives a 53-year-old super tusker, named Craig, one of the last few left in the world. As the sun dips, its warm light filters through his massive tusks, casting a glow on this majestic wild icon (facing page). With one of the largest tusks in Africa, Craig has been widely documented and photographed. Maasai Mara also has a rich variety of birds, including the Grey Crowned Crane with a crown-like crest that contrasts beautifully with the blue-grey plummage (above).

Zebras are found in large numbers in Maasai Mara, with their distinct stripes creating a striking visual spectacle (left). Interestingly, a unique melanistic zebra foal with polka-dot-like patterns was also spotted here in 2019 and was named Tira by a local guide. Safaris around Serengeti National Park (below), Tanzania, adjoining Maasai Mara, are also popular. Teeming with wildlife, it is most famed for the Great Migration, an annual event where millions of wildebeest, along with zebra and gazelle, move around the region in search of fresh grazing grounds.

A SALARY SURVIVAL GUIDE

M anaging your personal finance isn’t about math; it’s about mindset. Here are some tips on smart money moves for young earners.

Thumb Rule

Follow the 50-30-20 rule.

Set aside 50 per cent of your salary for needs — rent, groceries, and bills. Thirty per cent can go toward wants — eating out, travel, etc. The remaining 20 per cent should be for savings and debt repayment.

You learnt to balance chemical equations. You wrote essays on photosynthesis. But no one told you what to do when your phone buzzed with the message, “salary credited.” So, you swipe, spend, and survive - until one day, y ou wonder: why does the money feel like it’s vanishing?

Here’s the truth: how you manage money matters more than how much you earn. Two people can have the same income, but 10 years later, one is relaxed while the other is worried about the next EMI. The difference isn’t luck; it’s awareness. To help you through this situation, we offer some tips to get your mone y game sorted.

Save before you spend

The moment your salary is credited, set aside your 20 per cent savings. The best approach is to automate this process. Don’t wait till the end of the month — chances are, you’ll never have “leftover” money. Pay your future self first.

Build an emergency fund

Your goal should be to always have enough to cover at least six months of expenses. Start small — ₹5,000, then ₹10,000 — and build gradually. This fund is your cushion for situations with no income, job loss, sudden medical bills, or even a laptop crash right before a deadline.

Set a spending limit

Create a personal "fun budget." If you earn ₹40,000, your maximum lifestyle spend should be ₹12,000. When it’s gone, pause the splurging. It’s not boring; it’s smart.

Know your EMIs and interest rates

Write them down. Total them. Are you just paying the minimum due on your credit card? That’s a trap. Always pay in full, or as much extra as you can.

Bonus Rule: Don’t take investment advice from WhatsApp forwards. Stick to the basics — FDs, mutual funds, and recurring deposits. And always consult a SEBI-registered advisor before putting your money anywhere new. Before you buy something on impulse, ask yourself: will this make me feel free or stressed one month from now?

A PLACE TO THINK FREELY, LEARN DEEPLY: MISHA

Nestled in the coastal greens of Karnataka, the Manipal Institute of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (MISHA) is redefining what it means to pursue a liberal arts education in India. We talk to a member of MISHA’s leadership team to understand what makes student life on this vibrant, nature-rich campus truly unique.

What is MISHA’s vision for higher education in the Humanities and Social Sciences?

We believe in choice and individuality. Each student arrives with a unique curiosity, and our aim is to meet them halfway — to help them explore that individuality while building a strong intellectual and ethical foundation. In India, we urgently need academic ecosystems where disciplines can speak to each other. MISHA was built to provide this fluidity. Our programs are designed with clear graduate

attributes: critical thinking, articulate communication, social awareness, and adaptability to a rapidly evolving professional world.

What academic programs are offered at MISHA?

• Undergraduate: BA/BA (Hons) with options for Majors, Double Majors, and Minors.

• Postgraduate (MA): English, European Studies, History, Philosophy, Sociology, Geopolitics and International Relations, and Sanskrit Studies.

• Doctoral: PhD programs across the Humanities and Social Sciences, with an emphasis on original, interdisciplinary research.

What makes MISHA’s BA program distinctive?

Our flagship BA/BA (Hons) program is flexible and interdisciplinary. Students can combine subjects like

English, French/German and Intercultural Studies, Gender Studies, Sociology, History, Philosophy, Psychology, International Relations and Geopolitics.

Another highlight is the Learning Pathways model, which allows students to create personalized trajectories with majors, double majors and minors. We also have strong international collaborations with Deakin University (Australia) and University of Southampton (UK).

Can you tell us about the postgraduate programs at MISHA?

We recently introduced an innovative postgraduate model that connects the strengths of five domains — English, European Studies, History, Philosophy, and Sociology. The first semester is interdisciplinary. The second and third semesters focus on deep dives, while the final semester is devoted to a wellguided thesis project.

Our graduates have gone on to pursue PhDs at top global universities and secure meaningful positions professionally.

Where have MISHA's MA graduates pursued further studies?

They have progressed to international universities such as University of Oxford, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago, Royal Holloway, The University of Western Ontario, University of Texas, New York University, University of Manchester, Michigan State University, University of Amsterdam, University of Oregon, York University Canada,

projects, and present in supportive academic settings.

What makes the MISHA experience holistic?

University of Massachusetts, University of Kent, and so on.

What does MA in Geopolitics and International Relations offer?

This program, launched in 2010, was the first of its kind in India. Weekly debates, seminars, war games, simulation exercises, field visits, and internships provide a hands-on understanding of current geopolitical issues. Our alumni now work in government institutions, think tanks, intergovernmental agencies, global universities, and major media outlets.

What career opportunities can students in the Humanities and Social Sciences pursue?

The Humanities and Social Sciences give you the tools to think analytically, express ideas with clarity, and understand the societal forces that shape our lives.

We nurture that discovery through choice, community, and mentorship. Our pedagogy is influenced by global best practices — less lecture, more dialogue. Students work in teams, engage in live

We have a range of student-led forums: the Film Club, Literary Club, Sports Club, Theatre Club, and multiple literary journals. These spaces give students the chance to explore their talents, collaborate creatively, and build lasting friendships. We also host guest lectures, internships, international conferences, summer schools, and writing workshops. MISHA students become part of the larger Manipal ecosystem, which includes top-tier sports facilities, cultural infrastructure, and a sea-side town filled with 30,000+ fellow learners.

Shades on or off?

Believe it or not, your window shades play an important role in ensuring your safety. Here's how:

1. Keeping your window shades up during takeoff/ landing helps the cabin crew quickly assess the situation outside and form an exit plan in case of an unforeseen circumstance.

2. Once the doors are opened upon arrival, the cabin crew may ask you to close the window shades to maintain the cabin temperature and ensure your comfort and safety.

Please follow your cabin crew’s instructions for a safe flight.
