Hello 6E-Sep'25

Weddings have always been the heartbeat of India; full of rituals, flavours, fashion, and stories that linger long after the music fades. But today’s couples are rewriting the script. The big, fat wedding isn’t about size anymore; it’s about meaning. They’re choosing no-fuss, intimate celebrations that feel personal, soulful, and yes, a lot more fun.

And travel is right at the heart of it. From sundrenched beaches to cobblestoned streets, destination weddings are giving couples the chance to turn “I do” into an unforgettable journey.

Think heirloom trousseaus paired with minimal style, vows exchanged in tucked-away corners of the world, and feasts that tell indigenous stories rather than flaunt abundance. Sustainability, too, is no longer an afterthought; many weddings now carry lighter footprints and deeper emotions.

This special Hello 6E issue is all about that shift. In Indulge, we bring you wedding fashion stitched

As we celebrate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Shri Birsa MundaJi, we honour his legacy as a powerful leader and freedom fighter. Let us remember his unwavering spirit, which continues to empower and resonate as a symbol of resilience in our journey towards equality and freedom.

with memories, photography that captures raw emotion as much as grandeur, and food that celebrates roots and recipes. Double Take takes you honeymooning to Sumba Island and Ras Al Khaimah, two destinations where romance is as endless as the ocean. And for the bold at heart, UnRoute explores elopement in Amsterdam, where couples keep it fuss-free with vows whispered by canals and cobblestones.

Closer home, the young heartthrob Rashmika Mandanna reminds us how carrying one’s roots is the truest kind of glamour. She revisits her Coorg (Kodagu) memories!

Starting this issue, we also bring you a thought piece from global voices. We begin with an essay from The Washington Post on how AI is rippling through the world of travel, changing journeys everywhere.

So, let's make memories and travel happier!

India is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of its Constitution. It was on November 26, 1949 that the Indian Constituent Assembly formally adopted the Constitution, which came into effect on January 26, 1950. Let's commemorate this significant milestone in our journey as a nation.

FINDING THE PERFECT FIT

WHY RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL & HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE?

Choosing the right school is one of the most important and life-shaping decisions a parent can make for their child. Education is no longer limited to classrooms — it is about developing independence, resilience, and a global perspective. This is where residential schools play a unique and powerful role. They offer children the right balance of academic excellence, personal growth, and life skills.

In a candid conversation with Dr. Manimekalai Mohan, Founder of SSVM Group of Day and Residential Schools, we explore the important aspects to keep in mind while selecting the best residential school.

Why should parents think about residential school as a choice for their child’s education?

Residential schools provide an environment where learning, living, and personal growth go hand in hand. Students learn independence, responsibility, and resilience while being guided by trained pastoral caregivers. Free from excessive screens and daily distractions, children can focus on studies and a healthy lifestyle, build meaningful friendships, and develop life skills.

How does a residential school support academics and careers?

The right residential school integrates rigorous academics with personalised mentoring, career guidance, and preparation for national and international

Dr. Manimekalai Mohan Founder, SSVM Group of Institutions, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

opportunities. Many schools offer coaching for competitive exams like NEET and JEE, alongside skill-oriented learning, global curricula, and exposure to diverse academic pathways. Students are not only made exam-ready but also future-ready.

What role do sports and co-curricular activities play?

Daily fitness, sports programmes, and access to competitive games build stamina, teamwork, and discipline. Art, music, debate, and theatre nurture creativity and expression. They teach children leadership, perseverance, and humility.

How are life skills and values instilled?

Life in a residential school is a continuous lesson in collaboration, adaptability, and respect. Students learn to solve problems, take initiative, and develop empathy by living in a community. Values such as humility, integrity, and accountability are woven into daily routines — whether through teamwork in dorms, community service projects, or leadership programmes.

Is the environment safe and suitable for growth?

Safety is a top priority in any residential school. A good campus is located away from city life, offering fresh air, natural surroundings, and a secure setting. With round-the-clock healthcare and trained pastoral staff, children live in a safe, supportive environment. Parents gain peace of mind knowing their child is cared for, academically guided, and emotionally supported.

How does a residential school balance academics and personal life?

Full-term residential schools give children time to immerse themselves fully in learning and community life. Academic rigour is balanced with recreation, reflection, and time for hobbies. Structured schedules teach discipline, while vacation breaks provide children with quality family time.

What makes the right residential school stand out?

Parents need to look beyond impressive infrastructure and focus on the deeper values that shape their child’s growth. The true essence of a good institution lies in its ethos and philosophy — schools that nurture holistic development of mind, body, and spirit; balance tradition with innovation; and create opportunities to experience diverse world views in a multicultural setting. The right school will courage leadership, entrepreneurship, and community engagement with a track record of shaping not just achievers but well-rounded individuals.

'INKEM'-ING INTO OUR HEARTS

R ashmika Mandanna carries h er roots like a rhythm — soft, s teady, and unforgettable — as she takes over screens and minds alike.

She’s as breathtaking as her hometown Kodagu (or Coorg), which remains the very soul of who she is: the root of her memories, the tug in her heart, her quiet reflections, and now, even her entrepreneurial dreams. That's Rashmika Mandanna for you; the quintessential girl-next-door, a South Indian superstar, and after the movie Animal opposite actor Ranbir Kapoor, a national favourite who's winning hearts across the country.

Image: Rashmika Mandanna wearing
Onitsuka Tiger's New TIGRUN ULTI RS Series shoes

But long before she stormed into the hearts of pan-India audiences, Mandanna had already carved her niche in the Telugu film industry. From the charming Geetha Govindam, playing a character that embodied sweet, relatable simplicity, to Dear Comrade, portraying a budding cricketer facing personal trauma, to hits like Sarileru Neekevvaru (with Mahesh Babu), and Pushpa (with Allu Arjun), she was a star well before Bollywood came calling. Her romantic track “Inkem Inkem” became an anthem for lovers long before “Satranga” from her Bollywood hit echoed the same passion across the country.

Having conquered Telugu, Kannada and Tamil cinema, she’s now charting a winning course in Bollywood with blockbusters like Chhaava, Animal, and more. But the charming girl from Kodagu isn’t stopping at cinema. She recently stepped into the world of entrepreneurship with her own line of perfumes called Dear Diary. And, unsurprisingly, Kodagu weaves its way into this new chapter too.

Mandanna insists she never planned to become an entrepreneur. Her digital series 'Dear Diary', a heartfelt dive into her joys, heartbreaks, and moments of gratitude, inspired the brand. Her perfumes are bottled memories: her mother’s hug, the Kodagu monsoon, a childhood afternoon, and even the emotion behind a tattoo; each one deeply personal.

Kodagu isn’t just a place for the young actor; it’s home, in every sense. Her favourite travel destination? Home. Her hidden getaway from the tourist buzz? Still home. “Though,” she teases, “my home is no longer hidden... it is marked on Google Maps!”

While Kodagu has changed since her childhood, with more cafés and curious travellers, its essence remains untouched. “The quiet mornings, the warmth of the people, the smell of fresh coffee in the air… it still feels like home, just like it always did,” she smiles.

Memories

For Mandanna, school was close to home, but she would frequently travel to a nearby town called Gonikoppal, about an hour's drive from Kodagu. “I loved that stretch of road. Every now and then, my parents and I would also head to Madikeri just to relax My dad had a few favourite restaurants there, so those visits became regular family outings,” she says.

When she arrives in Kodagu

“It’s been a while,” she says with a nostalgic sigh, adding, “but the first thing I do is take a deep breath. The air in Coorg feels different; it's like a welcoming hug. Then I head straight home. Mumma’s food and just being with family... that’s all I need." Her favourite Coorgi recipe is koovaleputtu, which she craves each time she is away from home. It’s a sweet dish made from ripe bananas, jackfruit, and rice flour.

I love the coffee estates because nothing beats their earthy, fresh air. It’s like a natural therapy session. Then comes the monsoon mist! There’s something magical about watching the hills disappear into the clouds. And the most important are the Kodavas, who are warm and fiercely proud of their culture. You’ll always leave with a full heart and stomach of sumptuous food,” she says.

What else

The sunset view from a coffee estate is one-ofa-kind; Virajpet, with its magnificent temples, offers divine serenity. Image:

Indulge Indulge

With a new era of Indian weddings taking shape, couples are crafting sensory-rich experiences that honour their roots while embracing innovation.

OF LOVE and LINEAGE

S ome wedding dresses carry more than sequins and silk; they carry a grandmother’s affection, a mother’s smile, and the blessings of generations.

Indulge

In the world of Indian wedding couture, where luxury once meant “brand new,” a quiet but powerful shift is taking place. And celebrities are leading the way. For her wedding reception, entrepreneur Isha Ambani famously repurposed her mother Nita Ambani’s wedding sari. Actor Kareena Kapoor Khan, at her wedding, sported her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore's bridal garara, restored and further embellished by designer Ritu Kumar. These moments didn’t just make headlines; they signalled a trend where brides choose memory, meaning, and sustainability over excess.

Sustainability is Key

Eco-friendly practices now sit at the heart of luxury bridal design. Many designers are blending fabrics from heirloom pieces with sustainable handloom textiles, reviving older garments with techniques like appliqué work, layering motifs on fresh bases, and incorporating original borders into new silhouettes.

Designer Shruti Sancheti feels that the fashion industry’s environmental footprint contributing majorly to global emissions makes this shift

Repurposing Jewellery

• Reset old gemstones into contemporary settings.

• Convert traditional pieces into everyday wear like rings, pendants, or earrings.

urgent. She adds, “Repurposing not only reduces textile waste but also strengthens the value proposition for brides seeking both luxury and conscience in equal measure. These eco-conscious practices are no longer a niche; they are becoming a defining marker of thoughtful, future-forward bridal brands.”

Designer Asha Gautam notes that “some brands are experimenting with biodegradable and natural materials as well, ensuring their pieces are chemical-free and water-efficient.”

The Emotional Quotient

For many brides, repurposing is about far more than sustainability. Designer Ateev Anand observes, “For most couples, the most important takeaway from a custom experience is a sense of awareness.” The emotional pull is undeniable. Repurposed bridal wear allows brides to carry generations of love down the aisle, embedding their day with memory, heritage, and continuity.

For the Bride

• Borders from an old sari can be appliqued onto a lehenga

• Fabrics from multiple family weddings can be stitched into a sartorial “family tree.”

• Panels from an heirloom dupatta or sari can create a trailing lehenga train.

• Cut and re-embellish embroidered motifs from the heirloom onto your new bridal attire.

For the Groom

• Tailor an inherited sherwani for a perfect modern fit, updating buttons, collars, or linings while retaining the original embroidery.

• Incorporate antique buttons, cufflinks, or a brooch from the family’s collection.

Economic Wisdom

The environmental benefits of upcycling are matched by economic advantages. Designer Priyanka Raajiv explains, “The added advantage of a repurposed bridal wear is that it is a one-of-a-kind, meaningful piece that reflects the wearer’s style and personality. It could also be a cost-effective alternative that conveys a story of its history and significance to others.”

Creative Personalisation

Raajiv recalls one bride who wanted to use her mother’s bridal dupatta as the focal point of her ensemble. Anand shares another story of a client for whom he had re-purposed an antique Maheshwari sari.

“It is a global movement,” says Anand. “We are all seeking to connect in a deeper manner. The new sense of identity comes from authenticity and not audacity." He sums it up, “The charm lies not just in the final look, but in the story stitched into every seam, a story that carries the past into the present, and lets it shine anew for the future."

LIGHT, CAMERA,

F rom drones to Dolby sound and from original scores to unscripted tears, weddings today play out like cinematic epics you can reliv e forever.

They used to be whispered memories locked in albums. Today, weddings blaze to life in sweeping cinematic arcs, where every laugh, tear, and heartbeat is lit like a scene from a movie. There are original soundtracks, directors shaping the day’s rhythm, and cameras that float like shadows. It's no longer just wedding photography; it’s a personal epic, playing in Dolby clarity.

Cinematic Legacies

The modern Indian wedding is as much about visual storytelling as it is about rituals. “More than technical, weddings are human,” says wedding filmmaker Vishal Punjabi of The Wedding Filmer. He adds, “Cameras can capture light, but it’s people who capture feeling. You have to train your eye to find beauty in chaos."

Punjabi’s productions blend featherlight, AIpowered cameras, drones, cinema lenses, and 360-degree filming. For him, locations aren’t just backdrops but living characters, like the Tuscan hills, where celebrities Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli got married.

Music Just for You

One signature of Punjabi’s work is original music. “It’s memory in melody,” he explains. “Cutting a film to an original score makes

TEMPLE WEDDINGS

Another simple yet poignant backdrop for weddings is the Indian temple, where heritage, devotion, and intimacy unite. For photographers, these are timeless canvases, from actors Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth’s vows at Telangana’s 400-year-old Sri Ranganayaka Swamy Temple to ceremonies at Uttarakhand’s Triyuginarayan Temple. Such weddings can be hosted at many temples across the country.

it eternal. It becomes a song that belongs to the couple alone,” he says. The score isn’t an afterthought. It’s part of the storytelling DNA.

The Editorial Turn

The new wave of wedding and pre-wedding visuals often borrows from fashion editorial style; highly curated, but still emotionally authentic. “We blend the visual polish of magazines with the emotional depth of documentaries,” says Pervez of US-based P. Taufiq Photography, who specialises in NRI weddings. His process starts with creative planning: mapping timelines, understanding rituals, and identifying key emotional beats. While there’s no rigid “script”, there’s a shot plan to ensure essential coverage while leaving space for spontaneity. Editorial flash work turns any setting into a fashionforward portrait space; slow-motion and timelapse sequences add emotional weight. The revival of the 35-mm film photography lends texture and nostalgia.

The Visual Consultant

The modern wedding photographer’s role often begins months before the first shot. “Our role has expanded from photographers to visual consultants,” say Apoorv Mohan Shrivastav and Sanyogita Sao of luxury wedding resource provider Plush Affairs. They add, “We advise on everything, from stage layout and light to drape palettes and décor placement, ensuring seamless storytelling across photography, film, and social media.”

WED Without THE WASTE

M any modern couples aim for a sustainable wedding with a minimal carbon footprint. Here’s some expert help.

A traditional Indian wedding can produce up to 60 tonnes of CO2, but eco-friendly practices can cut this by over 70 per cent (NetZero India).

Nupur Agarwal, co-founder of sustainability consulting company GreenMyna, says, “An average 300-guest wedding generates about 15,000 plastic bottles and around 1,500 kg of food and décor waste.”

While these numbers may seem daunting, experts emphasise that sustainable weddings aren’t about perfection; every thoughtful step matters. Parthip Thyagarajan, co-founder and CEO of WeddingSutra, a popular marriage service provider, says, “Sometimes, sustainable

celebrations require more time and effort to arrange and can even be more expensive. But it doesn’t have to be all or nothing; even one thoughtful decision makes a difference.”

Personalisation is key. Kinjal Adodra, founder of DesignHQ, a wedding design brand, notes, “Many couples are choosing micro weddings with personalised elements that can be reused, ensuring nothing needlessly ends up in a landfill.”

“Sustainability is now a mark of taste and modernity,” adds Prerika Puri, creative head and founder of luxury wedding vendor

MUCH ADO about MARRIAGE

A city of timeless whispers and modern wonders, London pulses with life, history, and creativity. And when it comes to weddings, it’s a dream playground. Few destinations allow heritage, culture, and contemporary luxury to converge so seamlessly. Add the vibrancy of Indian traditions, and the result is a wedding album alive with cultural depth.

What sets London apart is choice. The Grand Junction and the stately Syon House with its Great Conservatory exude grand heritage. For intimate romance, the canals of Little Venice or Pembroke Lodge within the royal Richmond Park offers serenity. Beyond London, Euridge Manor unfurls like a fairytale, with secret gardens, and rustic arches. At the pinnacle of indulgence, Raffles London, in the legendary Old War Office, and the reimagined Old Session House channel contemporary sophistication into historic backdrops.

But London’s true allure lies in the ease around it - hospitality, connections and services. Here, a wedding is an unforgettable story set against one of the world’s most iconic cities.

FLAVOURS of FOREVER

Forget excess. Today’s Indian weddings serve intimacy, ancestral dishes, regional delicacies, and flavours that carry family histories to the table. “The Indian wedding feast is no longer just about abundance. It’s about storytelling,” says Sanjay Vazirani, chairman of Foodlink, which has catered for Bollywood celebrities and top industrialists. Adding: “We are seeing a beautiful shift where lost recipes, heirloom dishes, and micro-regional delicacies are finding pride of place alongside global cuisine.”

Vazirani's team works with families to “unearth forgotten flavours — a grandmother’s Sindhi curry, a Bohri thaal experience, or a century-old Punjabi sweet

that are elevated with our signature finesse,” he explains. At actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s wedding, Vazirani and his team highlighted dishes from both the Konkani-Mangalorean and Sindhi-Punjabi traditions. From sev barfi and rabdi to rasam and puliyogare, each dish became a bridge of belonging.

Chefs across the country are embracing this trend. “Modern weddings celebrate heritage through regional home-style cuisine, blending tradition with flavour. As a chef, it’s an honour to craft menus that tell personal stories through cherished local recipes,” says Simran Thapar, executive chef, The Leela Palace Bengaluru.

REGIONAL TASTE

For some, the revival of homestyle flavours is sheer magic. “The way Indian weddings are embracing this delicious change is very encouraging. The shift from lavish, generic hotel spreads to the comfort of family cuisines is not only delicious but also revives forgotten recipes,” says Abhilasha Jain, culinary storyteller and founder of catering brand Marwadi Khana. She highlights that wedding menus now spotlight “basics with a twist”; from gatte ka pulao with kadi to chaat with kadi kachori, and kalmi vada. Drinks include bajra raab and gond katira sherbet, while ker sangri appears as ker kaju or sangri koftas

This shift is also deeply emotional. Sangeetha, a bride from Kerala, now living in London, recalls her Bengali-Kerala fusion wedding where her grandmother personally guided chefs in making payasam. “It wasn’t just food,” she says, “it was a piece of my childhood carried into my marriage.”

Chef Bakshish Dean, a preserver of Punjabi Christian cuisine, champions this revival story. He says, “It isn't just about recipes. They’re the threads of our past, woven anew.” At weddings that blend the past and future, every plate tells a story, and every flavour becomes a celebration.

In West Bengal, mochar paturi (banana blossom steamed in leaves) is a plant-based heirloom once tied to bridal rites.

Kashmiri weddings feature grand wazwan banquets, where wazas (master cooks) serve delights like crisp tabak maaz and velvety gushtaba

Gujarat’s humble khichu, steamed with spices, proves how something simple can be irresistible. Himachal Pradesh offers the soulful dham, and Uttarakhand, chainsoo

SUMBA ISLAND Indonesia

Words Molly Johnston

They say some islands whisper, but Sumba sings, wild and low, like the ocean breathing secrets into your ear. The “Forgotten Island” is what many call it, and as you step onto its shores, the name feels like a promise kept. For newlyweds seeking a love story beyond the ordinary, Sumba unfurls itself slowly, like a hand-drawn map, its edges softened by salt and time.

On Sumba, mornings start with a rush you’ll never forget. At first, it feels like any

serene beach sunrise - sand glinting and waves lapping lazily. Then, in the distance, a misty spray rises. Within moments, the silence breaks. Hooves pound against wet sand, water arcs into the air, and the island’s stars appear: the legendary sandalwood horses.

The horses charge down the shoreline, manes snapping in the wind. Sometimes they match your stride, and at other times, they splash alongside in a playful

swim. These ponies are woven into the island’s identity; their bloodlines stretching back to Mongolian horses brought here centuries ago by spice traders.

After the hum of Bali’s busy streets, Sumba, just a short flight away, feels like stepping into a forgotten dream - vast grasslands swaying in the breeze, rivers winding lazily through emerald rice terraces, and Ongole cattle grazing under the skies that seem impossibly wide. The air carries the perfume of frangipani. Hidden waterfalls whisper from jungle depths, while the ocean hums its eternal song against untouched surf breaks.

Days are threaded with moments of discovery: releasing baby sea turtles into the foam, learning the slow, sensuous art of chocolatemaking, or flowing through yoga poses. In ancient villages, guests are welcomed with coconuts and a meal that tastes like the island’s own heartbeat - pure, simple, and nourishing.

Dining here is a ritual: ingredients gathered from gardens, or lifted fresh from fishermen’s nets. One night, you feast on the beach under a lantern sky; the next, your table glows by the candlelight in a hidden cove. And always, beneath the luxury, there is purpose. The island’s beauty is matched by its generosity - resorts working with the Sumba Foundation to bring clean water, education, and hope to its people. Guests are not just witnesses but participants in this quiet transformation.

In Sumba, love feels both untamed and anchored. It is where the first pages of marriage are written in tides and sunsets, in shared silences and wild laughter. And once you’ve breathed its air, this “Forgotten Island” will linger in your heart like a secret you’ll never want to give away.

RAS AL KHAIMAH UAE

Words Zayd Ali

As the sun sinks behind the horizon, the dunes of Ras Al Khaimah catch fire; molten gold fading into deep amber, and shadows stretching like slow brushstrokes across an endless canvas. In that fleeting hour, the desert breathes; its silence hums with stories, and the “Nature Emirate” bares its soul.

Famed for its dramatic dunes, Ras Al Khaimah is also a secret beach escape, where ribbons of powdery sand meet the turquoise Arabian Gulf in a hush of tranquillity. One moment, you’re riding a camel across the desert at sunset; the next, you’re barefoot on a secluded shoreline, the waves breathing in time with your heartbeat.

The desert offers its own theatre. At Bedouin Oasis Camp, traditional goat-hair tents and quad biking thrills give way to starlit feasts. Sonara Camp refines the experience — candlelit tables, curated menus, and the serene quietude of infinity stretching in every direction.

Beyond the dunes, Ras Al Khaimah unfolds in layers: mangrove lagoons made for paddling, the adrenaline of Jebel Jais ziplining, the haunting beauty of Al Jazeera Al Hamra, the only remaining pearling village in the region, and Dhayah Fort’s panoramic embrace. Overlooking the Hajar Mountains, the restaurant 1484 by Puro pairs sweeping views with refined gastronomy, a toast to love in the clouds. Here, the sunset is only the beginning.

You’ve heard of wedding planners. But here comes a new architect of love: the elopement planner. Their canvas isn’t a banquet hall; it’s the world itself. They design celebrations measured not in guest counts but in goosebumps, and where the backdrop is as unique as the couple’s story.

Here, vows aren’t whispered in private chapels alone, they’re exchanged under blushing dawn skies on the Skinny Bridge, in a hidden garden by the Rijksmuseum, or along cobbled lanes that have seen centuries of love stories unfold.

The Love

The city is a living, breathing theatre of romance. Gabled houses lean like old friends over shimmering canals, bicycles

hum over arched bridges, and the air is laced with the scent of history, espresso, and freshly baked stroopwafels. Your “I do” might be sealed at sunrise in a secluded garden or toasted with champagne on a rooftop under twinkling lights.

Start your tour in Jordaan, where Brouwersgracht (a historic waterway) curves past boutique shops and waterside cafés. Pause beneath the “seven bridges” view on Reguliersgracht, a perfect cinematic sweep. Steal moments in a stroopwafel shop or share a slice of Winkel 43’s legendary apple pie! These pauses become part of your love story.

Going Beyond

Outside the city, Haarlem’s cobblestone lanes and Gothic spires exude old-world romance. Utrecht’s canals hide waterside cafés and quiet nooks perfect for two.

An Amsterdam elopement isn’t skipping the wedding; it’s distilling the special experience. It’s exchanging the crowd for connection, and letting a city steeped in history become the ultimate witness to your love.

WHO GETS CHEAP FLIGHTS & HOTEL UPGRADES?

A rtificial intelligence is reshaping journeys worldwide, helping travellers enjoy seamless bookings, fairer rewards, and smoother experiences across air, road, and stay. Says Ethan Beck, from

Image: An artist's impression

For years, frequent travellers have built loyalty with their preferred airlines, enjoying rewards that come with regular flying. But with artificial intelligence now being used more widely across the travel industry — from dynamic pricing in airlines to room allocation in hotels and even automated car rental services — some customers are wondering how these changes will affect them.

Dynamic pricing has been around for decades, but AI is adding new layers of speed and complexity. And the evolving technology has sparked curiosity among travellers eager to understand how it shapes their journeys.

For customers, this may mean more frequent price shifts. Some believe AI could ultimately help by creating more competitive fares.

Experts suggest that as travel providers continue adopting these tools, competition will remain the key factor in keeping fares affordable. In the end, travellers across the world are watching closely, weighing loyalty benefits against the evolving ways in which technology is shaping their journeys. Z. John Zhang, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, who studies pricing strategies, said, consumers might be surprised if all airlines plan to use this form of pricing. “Ultimately, everybody will catch up and will go in that direction,” Pr course, that’s good for the consumers.”

Across USA, Hertz car rental service detects damage on its vehicles by taking high-definition photos and comparing them through an AI programme from the company UVeye. In the case of a notable ding or crack on a car, the system automatically sends a report to the traveller and asks for payment, Hertz spokesperson Emily Place said. If a customer disputes the charge, a Hertz employee reassesses the reported damage.

The new scanners haven’t had a seamless transition. When Adam Foley headed to Atlanta to visit his brother in late June, Foley rented a car from Hertz without thinking twice. Upon arriving back in San Antonio, he received a text message from Hertz that included photos of damage and a charge for $350.

HAS BEEN AROUND FOR DECADES, BUT AI IS ADDING NEW LAYERS OF SPEED AND COMPLEXITY. OME BELIEVE AI COULD CREATE MORE COMPETITIVE FARES.

the Wing reported that as of July 14, Marriott’s Automated Complimentary Upgrade system decided through an AI model through which royalty members would receive upgrades.

“This advanced system will automate the upgrade process, transforming it from a manual task into a swift operation completed in seconds,” Marriott spokesperson Kelly Lavin said in a statement. “Eligible members will benefit from increased visibility into their upgrades with advanced notifications, creating more anticipation before arrival and enhancing their overall experience.”

When Greg Guiteras, CEO of Florida-based Lorraine Travel, heard about Marriott’s new system, he said the AI upgrades system could do away with the connections and tactics commonly used to get upgrades, making it easier for Marriott customers to get rewards if they’ve earned them. To illustrate his point, Guiteras used a hypothetical hotel guest.

“Mr. Smith, who might have had a good connection with the room director at a hotel, no longer has that connection,” Guiteras said.

“When Mr. Smith calls that contact and says, ‘Hey, I’m going to be there like usual on Friday; can you get me that upgrade?’ that other

guy’s probably going to say, ‘Hey, AI handles this right now. I’ll do my best.’”

Guiteras says that by using AI, his company can compete better with larger travel services. While talking with travellers, the agents at Lorraine use a chatbot to quickly source hotel prices or pull up pictures of potential lodging. The accuracy of the bot has been strong enough that Guiteras may let his customers use it.

“I’m sure that there are cases where people get surprised by it,” Guiteras said, confident that consumers will still want his services. “But, hey, it’s going to be around. There’s no need to fight it. In fact, I’m all about embracing it.”

As AI becomes more deeply woven into the fabric of global travel, its role is shifting from silent support to visible enabler. For passengers, that means more seamless bookings, clearer rewards, and services that adapt quickly to their needs. The future of travel isn’t about replacing the human touch; it’s about using technology to enhance it, making every trip more efficient and transparent.

90 YEARS OF INSPIRATION DR. RAMDAS M. PAI’S LEADERSHIP AND LEGACY

Aguiding light for educationists, philanthropists and academicians, Dr. Ramdas Madhav Pai, Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in Karnataka, crafted a legacy that endowed the 72-year-old institution with a multicultural character and strong global presence.

This is the story of a remarkable leader who carried forward a legacy that ushered in a new era in academic excellence; a torchbearer of his father’s vision that unlocked boundless potential in higher education.

MAHE stands as a testament to a father-son mission driving a paradigm shift in education –a lighthouse whose beacon cuts

through the coastal mist, illuminating not just Manipal but the entire educational landscape.

MAHE reached new heights under Dr. Pai’s towering leadership, and grew into an education hub, widening its footprint across the country and setting up world-class offshore campuses. He says: “In a world of shrinking distances and countries with open borders, Manipal India will be recognised as one of the largest global varsities in India.”

His tremendous foresight came to fruition when MAHE Manipal transcended borders, opening doors to international student communities in Dubai, and Malaysia and Antigua. A renowned branch campus in the Middle East is MAHE Dubai in 2000.

Dr. Pai steered MAHE’s expansion in India, establishing universities in, Sikkim and Jaipur.

While Kasturba Medical College pioneered the first Public-Private Partnership model, 1953, Dr. Pai scripted history by creating the county’s first Private-Private Partnership model through the Jamshedpur initiative. The Manipal Tata Medical College (MTMC) at Baridih, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand has been established with the sole purpose of enhancing healthcare facilities for the local population and increasing the availability of skilled medical professional. Under Dr. Pai’s continued leadership, MAHE expanded its presence to Bengaluru in 2021, establishing a cutting-edge campus that offers over 65 futurefocused programs in engineering,

reflects his commitment to innovation, sustainability, and global collaboration, preparing students sfor leadership in a rapidly evolving world.

MAHE was declared a ‘deemed to be university’ in 1993, fulfilling Dr. Pai’s dream of realising his father’s vision for a world-class university. Further cementing its stature, MAHE was granted the prestigious Institution of Eminence status in 2020 — a testament to its enduring commitment to academic excellence and global leadership under Dr. Pai’s transformative leadership.

Guided by his father’s unwavering principles of ‘no fear, no favour’ and powerful entrepreneurial instincts and resolve, Dr. Pai championed meritocracy and uncompromising quality in education. He remained unwavering in his values refusing to bend even closest to him. His steadfast commitment to integrity at any cost

Unplugged

The Birla scion, celebrated for her musical talent and business ideas, fuses family legacy with her own identity, balancing heart, mind, and entrepreneurial pursuits.

Music or business, which is more fulfilling?

For me, it’s not a choice but a balance. They don’t compete; they complete. Together, they shape who I am. Music is my right brain: instinct, emotion, and creativity. Business is my left brain: logic and strategy. And they often intersectbusiness needs creativity, just as music demands discipline.

What's non-negotiable in business deals?

Patience over pressure, because the right deal at the wrong time is still the wrong deal. And deals aren’t just numbers; they’re people. The best ones leave everyone wanting to work together again.

Which part of building and running businesses gives you the greatest joy?

When everyone says it can’t be done, and then watching it come together against all odds - the zero-to-one moment; the phase of building from nothing!

Is business more about heart or mind?

Definitely both. The mind is non-negotiable; you need analytics, research, and financial modelling. But the heart tells you which problems are worth solving. At the end

of the day, business is about humans: customers, teams, and partners. And humans respond to authenticity, not algorithms.

Your de-stress mantra...

I’m a homebody at heart. I find joy in simple things; a warm cup of tea, a good book, board games, hanging out with my dogs, or drives with friends and family. I also love watching crime documentaries.

Phone, airpods, my LOVETC lip balm and a very handy Contraband You Again perfume, a book, and my crew.
