Water is a precious resource. Runoff is purified as it passes through the reeds and wetlands in Dry Creek. Photo: 'Reflections Along Dry Creek' by Luke Bourne

Water is a precious resource Watershed Art Prize which has water as its theme. The standard of artworks in the 2019 exhibition was stunning and it is always my pleasure to select the Mawson Lakes Living Editor’s Award. This year's winning artwork is on the cover. A story about the artist and why I selected her painting is on page 7.

Editor Linda Vining and MLL designer Nicole Aspinall at the Watershed Art Show. Photo: City of Salisbury

Water is a precious resource and the City of Salisbury is highly regarded for its water conservation and water management initiatives. Stormwater and ground water is captured in more than 50 wetlands across the city (including Mawson Lakes wetlands) to remove pollutants before the water is pumped for storage into underground aquifers. This natural treatment prevents flooding and provides water to keep Mawson Lakes (and other suburbs) green all year. To recognise the importance of water as a sustainable resource, the City of Salisbury runs an annual Mawson Lakes Living is an independently owned community magazine for people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. Advertising is open to anyone with products, services or events relevant to the people of Mawson Lakes. See page 19 for advertising details. Mum loved the bed It’s always hard to know what to give mum on Mother’s Day so when she pulled out her copy of MLL/May and pointed to that electric bed on the back cover we had the perfect gift. The kids used the recipe to make her pancakes, we discovered Luvely and bought a present there, then took the whole family to see the movie you recommended. Just wanted to let you know that the Mother's Day feature last month was great. - Betty Woodside Marriage in decline Now that anyone can marry, it seems that marriage has lost its meaning and is no longer a desirable relationship status. Figures from the Office of National Statistics show an astonishingly steep decline in marriage. The prediction is that 50 percent of teenagers now aged 13 to 18 will never walk down the aisle. Compared with my generation of people in their 60s, 91 percent of women and 86 percent of men married. - Barbara Ecker Building troubles Taro Jones asks about the eyesore called Emperor Living Apartments on the corner of Main Street and Elder Smith Rd as you drive into Mawson Lakes (MLL/April). In 2016 Council approved an 8-storey building on the site that would include 63 apartments, 9 shops and 6 offices, making it the tallest building in Salisbury. Trouble started when the builder Barbaros Constructions came under investigation for potential licence breaches. Work on the development was suspended in April 2018. Now the developer has been hit with a $1.262 million legal claim by SA Formwork for supply, installation and removal of concrete formwork. No work is being undertaken on the site at present and the eyesore remains. Ed No landscaping About 5 years ago Mawson Lakes Central, (where Woollies is) was built. In February we moved to Mawson Lakes all the way from Belgium. We enjoy reading MLL because we learn a lot about everything that's going on in our new neighbourhood. Recently we went back to Europe to visit our family and we took magazines of MLL so everyone could read about our new community. Mawson Lakes could be so beautiful if Salisbury Council went over to Norwood and Burnside to see how they spend rate payers money there. - Gordon Reynolds, Mawson Lakes Central Cat Curfew I'm fed up with prowling cats that turn security lights on and off all night, get into screaming fights and foul my garden leaving an awful smell. This is a call to Salisbury Council to follow the lead set by Marion Council regarding a cat curfew. - Carmen Bouy

Watershed Art Exhibition

Artistic creativity flows through the veins of Svetlana Kendzhaeva, and her accomplished talent was recognised when she won the Mawson Lakes Living Editor's Award at the Watershed Art Show last month. Her painting 'Bird’s Flight' is featured on the cover.

As a judge, the appealing painting captured my attention because of its sweeping movement that took my eye from the top of the canvas to the bottom where the bird is carrying a flower. The swirl of maritime colours would not let me go as my vision went round and round enjoying the sense of majestic flight around the shimmering earth.

Svetlana was born in Russia and her life has always revolved around art in its many forms - as Interestingly, Mayor Gillian Aldridge, artist Svetlana Kendzhaeva and editor Linda Vining an illustrator of children’s Svetlana draws books, backdrops for on her experience of painting religious icons in movies, and painting religious icons. It’s tough and it catches the light from different angles." In her winning painting, Svetlana says she is portraying a bird that flies around the world To me, the luminous effect of the globe added circling the oceans. Focus on Finance

Probitas Accounting and Taxation Services Accountant Travis Wilton has worked across country and city over many years, but he says he has found his forever home and office in Mawson Lakes. The country boy who grew up in Crystal Brook now describes himself as "cityfied." For a family man who has two children and lives in Mawson Lakes, convenience won the day. "I don’t want to battle the traffic every day and arrive home stressed, instead I want time to be with my wife and kids, and walk the dog." The name of Travis’s company on Park Way is Probitas which in Latin means 'Honesty'.

"We are here to help people manage their financial affairs, maximise revenue and minimise tax by knowing the options available to them." • • • • •

"In accounting, the rules, opportunities and technology are always changing so my job is to be on top of the changes and pick out the best deal that is specific to you, your business, your workplace and your superannuation." "You need to talk to me before 30th June so I can work out the best solutions for you. After that it may be too late to benefit from current legislation."

We hear more and more about medical tourism, and yes, believe it or not, 'dental tourism'.

Global standards and Dr Peter to Bertossa treatment protocols with respect teeth BDS are highly variable compared to medical procedures. In two different countries it is possible to be receiving two very different treatments to ostensibly treat the same problem. Standards when assessing even the suitability for complex treatment is highly variable, and in many countries dental care is treated more as a business than health care. Consumer protection law and cross-infection control standards are highly variable and given some dental treatments are very ‘technique sensitive’ and susceptible to wwwdental failure, pursuing complex .d treatment overseas is a cauldron of risk. entalonm

Genetic profile by Nigella My rescue friend Barney thought he was a Beagle. That’s what they said at the shelter, but it turns out he isn't.

Find and circle all the dog breeds in the grid below

His adopting family did a DNA test to find his doggie genetics and discovered he was 48% cocker spaniel, 40% mixed breed and 12% dachshund. Barney is definitely not a Beagle! With my friend Chloe. What mix of breeds are we?

He was a bit disappointed to hear that, but it did explain why he doesn’t like jumping into water, digging holes and chasing birds! Barney's doggie parents bought the DNA test off the internet for about $60 to find his real mix. Barney said the test was pretty simple. A box arrived at his place and his parents registered him online, filled out basic information on the box with a pen, used two swabs to the inside of his mouth and gums, let it dry, put it back in the box, sealed it up and mailed it with pre-paid postage. After a few weeks Barney’s results came back. His ancestry went back three generations so he could see the profile of his doggie parents and grandparents. Wow, that was a surprise. He never knew them, but they were a pretty mixed up bunch of breeds. So now Barney knows his unique genetic blueprint AND his ancestry. I'd like to know mine. What about you? 16

Getting some fresh air

by Fred

Ginger and I love our cat enclosure, or as I prefer to call it "the bird-proof courtyard". I enjoy bird watching as much as the next chap, but I do not appreciate their flappy wings when they swoop past me to build their nests in the vertical garden pots, No! Frankly I don’t think our staff like that much either.

Ginger on high, Fred below in their specially designed cat enclosure.

Our courtyard is a safe haven for us, especially Ginger who jumps up to the top hammock. That's her ladyship on top. Even I cannot reach her there, though I’ve tried. Access to the courtyard is through a flap in the window. Out here the air is nice and fresh and we can use the litter tray in private - our staff have kindly installed a privacy screen for us - they have also added a lovely sculpture of a pear tree in wrought iron and glass. This is enough for me, and I have no desire to venture into the outside world (where all the shouty people live), but Ginger, well, she is always trying to get out.

PAYMENT FOR ADVICE A lawyer and a doctor were chatting at a social function when a patient came up to the doctor and asked for advice on how to manage his gout. The doctor gave him some helpful tips, then turned to the lawyer and said: "It’s difficult when people ask for advice outside my surgery; I never know whether to send a bill for professional service or not." The lawyer replied that it was perfectly acceptable to do so. Acting on this advice the doctor sent an invoice to the man with gout. A day later the doctor received an invoice from the lawyer.
