Baby formula racket Absolutely appalled on my latest visit to Woolworths at Mawson Lakes to witness two elderly Asians buying the allocated two tins of baby formula, walking out the shop and returning within minutes to buy more. I saw them doing this about 6 times, completely clearing the shelves. I spoke to a Woolworths employee who informed me that the store is unable to do anything about it and that this isn't new for Woolworths at Mawson Lakes! Some mornings a van of people arrive who do the same thing!!! Mawson Lakes is full of young families and many parents need formula to feed their youngsters but the shelves are empty. - Local observer Focus on Finance Your 'Focus on Finance' feature was perfectly timed. I found a local accountant to help me take advantage of the Government's recent tax reforms. Now to spend my refund cheque to boost the local economy! - Audrey

Environmental Award Congratulations to Colin Taylor who was awarded the "2019 Premier’s Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Volunteer Service" for his work in the Pledger Wetlands where he has coordinated the transformation of a sparsely vegetated 2km tract of land along the railway embankment into a thickly vegetated area accessible to bicycle riders, dog walkers, joggers and birds watchers. - Peter Thrupp Containing cats Ginger and Fred set such a fine example for cat living (MLL/June). If only other cat owners would keep their cats from roaming in neighbourhood streets and yards there wouldn’t be such a community backlash against cats. It’s an awful chore to remove stray cat poo from my garden several times a week- unsightly, unhealthy and it stinks. Keep your pets on your own property. - Estelle Quest

Reconciliation in Mawson Lakes Reconciliation Week at Mawson Lakes was celebrated with lots of activities on the UniSA campus. There was boomerang painting, tasting kangaroo meat and bush tucker, weaving, music-making, trying Uncle Dookie's pretend witchetty grubs and eating potatoes cooked in an open fire pit ignited by rubbing sticks together. The Tree of Hands reconciliation token (pictured on the cover this month) grew as visitors painted hands and stuck them on the tree which symbolises community support for reconciliation and respect for the oldest living culture on earth. University students and staff plus 20 classes of children from Mawson Lakes School joined in and learned about coming together to appreciate shared histories and cultures. Ed

Aboriginal women Sarah and Tiffany said reconciliation means coming together where everyone is the same.

Uncle Dookie hands out witchetty grubs to school children and university staff. Chewy! Please mention Mawson Lakes Living when responding to ads

Community Conversations continued from page 4 Lost Drone I found a drone in my backyard in Windermere Crescent. First thing I did was look up MLL to see if there was a lost and found column. Has anyone lost a drone? - Rose Foti Hoon driving I live on Mawson Lakes Blvd and my house is positioned between a bend and a roundabout. Worryingly, some drivers use this stretch of road as a race track. Once they go around the roundabout they accelerate at high speed before they get to the bend which they use as a racing track chicane and then brake heavily. A pedestrian island where families cross with their prams and pushers, and further on a retirement village and a nursing home line the roadway. The consequences of hoon driving can be catastrophic when a vehicle goes round the bend at high speed and has no time to break when someone crosses in front. I have lived in this house for nearly 5 years and notice high speed driving is on the increase on this stretch of

road. I have contacted the police and our council representatives but they just pass the buck and no action has been taken. - Rainer Glowacki Funds for cancer research The Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club raised $560 at its Biggest Morning Tea this year to support cancer research. Over the past 4 years the club has raised $2,200 for this cause. - Geoff Fox, Public Relations, MLMYC

University and senior school form new partnership The planting of a maple tree in the grounds of the University of South Australia at Mawson Lakes marked the official opening of the Maple Leaf School and a sign of the partnership between the two education systems. The release of Loretta's first music album in June is the culmination of years of musical devotion. Mawson Lakes resident Loretta De Palma plays the violin and her career has taken off. Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards

Falls Prevention It is estimated that 1 in 3 people aged 65 years and over fall each year. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation in persons of this age group. Falls can cause injury, particularly hip fractures which can lead to a range of long term mobility and health issues. They also reduce confidence, and impact independence. Identifying risks and preventing falls is vital. There are a number of risk factors including age, environment, impaired vision, muscle weakness, slow reaction time, medications, footwear and mobility issues. Recent research has shown that foot problems and inappropriate footwear are a significant factor in falls. Identifying and addressing these issues can reduce falls incidence by 36%. Foot problems that contribute to falls include foot pain, toe weakness, reduced range of motion, toe deformity and reduced feeling in feet. Footwear related risks include barefoot walking, walking in socks, shoes without fastening like velcro or laces, and increased heel height. At Mawson Lakes Podiatry Clinic we assess footwear and provide education on footwear choices. We also provide screening to assess people's falls risk, and provide strengthening and balance exercises to improve stability and reduce the risk of falling.

The most dentally hazardous sport is basketball. This results from the combination of the aggressiveness of the sport (with many elbows Dr Peter Bertossa BDS thrown around at face height) and the under utilisation of professional custom-made mouth guards in this sport. Typically sports injuries to teeth involve broken front teeth followed sooner or later by nerve death in the same teeth (and attendant discolouration of the tooth as it dies). As with other dental problems the treatment becomes a life time commitment.

Magnificent Myponga by Nigella We were driving south when I heard mummy say big words I’d never heard before - Myponga Yankalilla, Carrickalinga. We were heading for a holiday house along the coast. And, what a house! It was perched on the top of the world at Myponga. I took up a sunny position on the couch in front of enormous glass windows that looked way across the blue waters of the Gulf and all along the headlands to Adelaide. From this vantage point I watched sheep on the rolling green hills, wallabies down in the steep gullies, rabbits, and even a lone fox running along the fence line. It was very windy up there

16

with lots of strange noises and unusual smells. The boys played with their drone in the wide open windy spaces, but I never knew where that thing would land so I was 'on alert' skipping around to keep out of its way. Yummy steak cooked on the outdoor bbq is my favourite, so I eagerly helped with the after dinner clean-up. "Magnificent" was another big word that mummy said over and over. This was in the mornings just before sunrise when the sky opened in a bank of solid orange, and everything glowed purple, pink and yellow. I like that word "magnificent".

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 146, August 2019

FALSE TEETH The guest speaker at a dinner was in such a hurry to get to his speaking engagement that he left his false teeth at home. At dinner he turned to the man next to him and explained, "I can’t eat anything, I forgot my teeth." The man said, "I can help and he reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of false teeth. "Try these," he said. The speaker tried them but they were too loose. "I have another pair, try these." The speaker tried them but they were too tight. The man was not taken aback and said, "I have one more pair." "Ah, these are just right," said the speaker and off he went to give his speech. When the evening came to a close, the speaker looked for the man to thank him. "I want to thank you for coming to my aid. Where is your clinic, I've been looking for a good dentist?" "Oh no", the man replied. "I’m not a dentist... I’m an undertaker!"
