Theft from vehicles is on the rise in Mawson Lakes, according to Christine Bettess, SAPOL Manager of Crime Prevention, but she advises that this is one of the most preventable crimes.
“Remove valuables and electronic devices from your car, they are a magnet for thieves,” she said.
At ML we have a Safe Community Network where residents, representatives from police, the university, council, schools and businesses meet regularly to discuss safety issues. The network is keen to establish safe places in homes and businesses through the Safety Assist Program. Read about it on page 26.
There are many things you can do to keep your home and family safe, especially as the holiday season approaches. David Morris from Nexus Security in ML says that new technology is being developed all the time, from cameras that can be viewed on your phone anywhere in the world, to outdoor sensors that detect potential intruders before they break in.

We heard good news from Council recently that work on the long-awaited pedestrian paths under the railway interchange and Salisbury Highway will begin early next year. This will link the Sanctuary, Shoalhaven and the original estate and create safer access for pedestrians, cyclists and joggers. Go inside to read the latest developments.

Daylight robbery - I am a resident in Ibis St Mawson Lakes and we have been experiencing break-ins in our street. My neighbour’s house was broken into on a Tuesday and again on a Saturday. My house was broken into on Wednesday and everything of value was taken. The thieves smashed my front window and got into the house between 10:30am and 3pm so this is happening during daylight. I write to residents to be aware and to have enough security.

Residents are watching the family emerge and the 6 chicks are doing well. The male bird looks for food and couragously shoos away predators, while mother bird has made a slippery slide out of reeds so the chicks can reach the water. Beautiful to watch.
Viv CauchiResidential parking zones - Parking in The Strand and surrounding streets is becoming impossible. These are residential streets, yet workers and patrons from nearby commercial premises and construction sites, park here all day making it impossible for residents and their visitors to park outside their homes. Home owners are not happy. It’s time for Council to introduce residential parking zones in ML. If this is a concern to you, ring Salisbury Council and let them know.

We flew into Parafield on a business trip and picked up a copy of Mawson Lakes Living at the airport so decided to explore ML instead of staying in the city. We booked into the accommodation advertised in the magazine and had dinner at one of the restaurants that was reviewed. In the morning we went for a walk then bought presents from a gift shop in Light Common that we saw in the booklet. What a friendly suburb and such an informative community magazine. From now on when we come to Adelaide we’ll stay at Mawson Lakes.
Bogus callers - Bogus door knockers are targetting homeowners in ML. They may claim to be from the council, the police or a utilities company. They ususaly work in pairs and ask to come in to use the bathroom, get a drink of water or use your phone. One will distract you while the other steals your bag/belongings. Do not let unknown people inside, direct strangers to public toilets, keep the screen door locked and check caller identity. Elderly people and children are particularly vulnerable.

Thieves are becoming more brazen, and residents who have experienced criminal attacks in Mawson Lakes are stunned that thieves have smashed windows and robbed them in broad daylight.
David Morris from Nexus Security at Mawson Lakes says that thieves drive around looking for opportunities.
“If you have an alarm system installed, use it,” said David. “Most intruders will leave a house very quickly once an alarm has been activated.”
“Keep that siren box outside looking new and have warning stickers on the windows. Criminals look for houses without alarms, or poorly maintained alarms that they know probably won’t work.”

Each month Living will put the spotlight on a different outdoor artwork that we can see as we go about our daily lives. It will tell where to find it, who did it and what it stands for.
As part of the design of the first stage of the Mawson Lakes School, Leslie Matthews, a South Australian artist, was engaged in 2004 to design an iconic fence mural around an environmental theme.
It was decided to work with a group of 5-year-olds in Reception to depict animals from the adjacent Dry Creek.
The artist and the students explored the creek and located creatures that use it as their habitat. Hence the animal drawings on the mural at the entrace to the school (pictured).
Once the students had identified their creatures they worked with Leslie to accurately draw the animals to particular dimensions to match the fence panels. The drawings were then transferred
onto metal templates for the cut-out process. The project took 3 months to complete and a number of students visited the workshop to see their creatures being cut out, powder coated and dried.

If you have a Seniors Card you can travel for free on public transport between the hours of 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday and anytime on weekends or public holidays.
Seniors cards will soon change over to new smartcard technology that will be used on all Adelaide metrocard public transport ticketing systems. New cards will be sent in the mail with instructions.
To access the new technology go to any metrocard recharge agent, such as a newsagency, and load credit ($) onto your card. You can also do this on board trains and over the telephone. When boarding, you simply scan your seniors card at the ticket machine and it will show the balance left on the card. Once the smartcard system is fully implemented, the old seniors card and the old green magnetic tickets will no longer work on public transport. Ed.

Enthusiasm for cosmic space is contagious when you talk to storyteller Martin Lewicki (pictured) who loves to take people to the moon and back, and on the way visit the stars and planets.
Martin is the popular astronomy educator at the Adelaide Planetarium at Mawson Lakes.
On his cosmic journey he explains why we get day and night, the phases of the moon and the activity of NASA’s Curiosity Rover taking place on Mars at present. Into his stories he weaves mythology, sky lore and humour as he reveals the ever changing magic of the heavens and its influence on mankind through the ages.
“My aim is to make the study of cosmic space captivating so that people go away with a new understanding of the sky they see every day and every night,“ he said.
He does this in a most comfortable way in the air-conditioned planetarium which is a dark, circular room with specially designed reclining
chairs. A projector lights up the 8 metre domed ceiling which acts as a giant screen to display 5,000 stars, the sun, the moon and the planets.
The planetarium is open for school groups and for public presentations, and it is also a venue for hire. “We’ve hosted creative birthday parties, engagement parties, romantic anniversaries for a twosome, and

Four young entrepreneurs from Mawson Lakes are reviving the ancient art of magic and using a modern form in corporate workshops and youth training programs to motivate people towards more positive behaviour.
Lenny, Vinh, Jeffrey and Travis have been so successful in developing their start-up business called Encyclopedia of Magic that they were selected into the South Australian Young Entrepreneurs Scheme run by Business SA. They have set up their business at Innovation House in Technology Park. “People have short attention spans so we use magic and card tricks to engage our audience, which may be anyone from corporate executives to disengaged youth,” said Vinh who has an accounting degree from Adelaide University. “The secret to opening minds is to generate engagement and anticipation. From there we talk to our audience about perceptions, the power of focus, problem solving, positive behaviour and the notion that anything is possible.”
Vinh says that magic is about exploring the human mind. “I study the mind constantly because behind every magic trick is a deep psychology. The more we understand how the mind works the more we can shape it, twist it and play with it,” he said.
Business partners Lenny and Jeffrey are hospital pharmacists who dispense
medicine in their day jobs, but they describe magic as medicine that tastes good. “It’s healing because it makes you laugh and engage your mind,” said Jeffrey. Ed.

Grace has just returned f rom a school study trip to Germany. She looks at the similarities and differences between German and Australian students.
Growing up, young people are often heavily influenced by culture and life experiences which help define their values and who they are. However, as I recently discovered during a school study tour of Germany, there are many aspects in the lives of young people that remain the same regardless of culture, language or geographical location.
I was lucky enough to spend a few days in a high school while in the country town, Neuendettelsau in Bavaria. Despite school beginning at eight o’clock and finishing at one, the typical day of a German teenager closely resembles that of an Australian student. School and lessons such as; French, Maths, English and Science take up the morning, while afternoons and weekends are mostly spent socialising with friends, attending parties or completing homework.
Although at times I struggled to understand the German language, I was able to connect with my fellow students through the mutual understanding of teenage life and social expectations. Just as in schools here in Australia, there were many different friendship groups, each comprised of different and unique personalities. There were those who enjoyed school and worked hard, others who preferred to sit in the back and socialise during lessons, while others liked wearing black and blasting punk and heavy metal from their iPods.
Although there are many differences in culture and lifestyle throughout the world, I believe that similar involvements in friendships and school and struggles with forming identity are what make the teenage experience so universal.

Walkers, cyclists and pedestrians are looking forward to underpasses that will link the subdivisions of Mawson Lakes.
The underpasses are to be constructed under Salisbury Highway (linking Shoalhaven with The Sanctuary) and under the railway interchange (linking Shoalhaven with the Original Estate). Salisbury Council has announced they are working with the Department of Transport to build an underpass beneath the railway interchange which they hope to begin early next year.
Janis Gray who is a resident of Shoalhaven said it’s scary to see adults and children racing across the railway line that divides the eastern and western subdivisions of Mawson Lakes.
“Without an underpass we feel isolated from the interchange and the commercial area,” she said. “It takes an hour for us to walk from our house to the newsagency and back just to buy a newspaper. If we had a pedestrian underpass I would walk with my trolley to the shops.”
Christine Hillier who organises the Mawson Lakes Heart Foundation Walking Group said that underpasses along Dry Creek will open up a safe linear pathway off the main roads for all to enjoy.
The underpasses are part of a network of trails that will eventuallly allow walkers and cyclists to travel all the way to Salisbury town centre. Ed.

People ask which Martial Art they should do. Some prefer a single traditional art, others to learn a variety of styles at one school. Safety Assist volunteer Sharon Blair at 143 Shoalhaven Circuit said the most unusual assistance she has ever given was when a motor cyclist knocked on her door with an injured hawk. “I was able to use my first aid skills to help the bird and then call animal welfare,” she said.
Would you offer assistance to a distressed person who came to your home? Being a member of the Safety Assist program asks no more than that. You don’t need to be home all the time and you don’t bring strangers into your home. Usually only a single phone call is required to get appropriate assistance.
Safety Assist is a national program coordinated by Safe Communities Australia and is an important element in community safety and security.

The idea behind regular dental checkups is that if dental cavities arise, they can be treated while they are small.
This isn’t just good for your dental health. This actually makes a lot of economic sense!
Fixing a cavity when it is small will probably cost less in most cases than having the tooth removed when the tooth becomes hopeless.
Furthermore a cavity that has been allowed to grow over time until it is deep into the tooth structure can lead to a painful infected nerve. Teeth can usually still be kept in this situation, however not only will you need the original (albeit much larger) filling, but you will also need a treatment called Root Canal Therapy. When dogs comes out of water they shake vigorously and share massive quantities of water with everyone in the immediate vicinity. I’ve noticed it’s a generosity of spirit not appreciated by humans at close range.
A recent study took a scientific look at this involuntary behaviour. Dogs that are wet suffer the risk of hypothermia, so water removal is essential. Animals who remain wet can use 20 percent of their daily energy staying warm and generating the heat necessary for evaporation. A vigorous shake will efficiently remove excess water so we dry faster, suffer less risk from the cold and save energy. We can remove 70 percent of the water from our fur with just a few seconds of shaking.
I like a good shake myself, but whenever I have a bath and Mummy plucks my bedraggled body out the tub, she curiously runs away.

I bumped into Margaret Hill and Maddison (pictured) going to the supermarket to buy ingredients for their favourite meatloaf. It sounded so simple to make that I jotted down the recipe and made it for dinner myself. The unusual combination of flavours gives this meatloaf a tangy sweet and sour taste. Here is Margaret’s recipe.
Ingredients:
3 hard boiled eggs shells removed.
Glaze
1/4 cup tomato sauce
1/4 cup chutney
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 tablespoons sultanas
Meatloaf
600gm mince steak
1 onion minced
Capsicum and grated carrot to taste
1 cup breadcrumbs
2 raw eggs lightly beaten to bind the mixture
Beef stock for flavouring
To make:
1 Mix the ingredient for the glaze and spread over base of a loaf dish.
2 Mix ingredients for the meatloaf. Divide mixture in half and put half in the dish on top of glaze.
3 Press down the middle to form a gully and place the eggs longways in the meat.
4 Place the rest of the meat mixture over the top and push down to compact. Be sure to cover the eggs and fill any spaces between them.
5 Bake in a moderate oven approx 40 mins. Let rest for 10 mins.
6 Turn out onto a plate so the glaze runs over the meatloaf. Cut into 1cm slices to reveal the eggs.
The wet winter and spring were a gardener’s delight but this translates to a bonanza season for bees. We have already seen lots of bee stings, as well as a few suspected spider and ant bites (they don’t leave a sting behind, so it’s harder to be sure).
If your pet is stung, you will usually see a combination of pain and swelling around the sting. Occasionally we see more violent reactions such as collapse, vomiting or diarrhoea. In any case, you should visit the vet for assessment. As a first aid remedy, ice is useful (especially in the mouth, dogs will happily chomp ice cubes), along with scraping out the sting (don’t squeeze it!) if you can see it. Some dogs also show a later “urticarial” (nettle-rash) reaction, where the skin stands out in small blebs. This is not usually itchy, and can be reduced or prevented with anti-inflammatory treatment.

The Adelaide Hills has the ideal climate to produce high quality Sauvignon Blanc. The high altitude combines brilliantly with the favourable climate to allow grapes to mature more slowly than other regions, thus creating wines with intense elegant flavours and characteristics. Firstly, why the name? In 1991 this lovely little vineyard stopped a bushfire on Black Thursday, and helped the CFS save the township of Gumeracha. Good enough reason to raise a glass or two.

of the wine comes to life, showing this varietal is ideal for our Australian climate. It is bursting with tropical fruits - guava, paw paw and honey dew melon balanced seamlessly with notes of passionfruit and split pea.
The wine with its rounded tropical fruit palate is supported by a tight citrus acidity that gives a zesty, crisp finish creating a wine that is best enjoyed in its youth. Ideal for any in or outdoors activity this summer.
I’d never heard of a White Pizza so when I saw it on the menu at Lakeside Cafe at Oakden I had to give it a try, and what a treat it was, covered in white cheeses, bocconcini, onion, canadian bacon and basil. Lakeside Cafe is a gem of a place in a picturesque setting overlooking a lake surrounded by trees, not far from Mawson Lakes. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 9am to 9pm.
The menu is extensive with something for every palate. My neighbour had prawn and mango salad served with a generous helping of lightly grilled prawns. Delicious.
Best of all we were able to sit on the weatherprotected veranda and have our dogs beside us. A buzzing crowd was testimony to the quality of this charming eatery. Definitely worth a visit. Ed.

The Bird of Paradise is a spectacular evergreen plant with uniquely shaped orange and blue flowers that resemble a bird’s head, hence the name Bird-of-Paradise. The warmer the climate the more the flowers bloom. Strelitzia forms great clumps of over a meter wide and up to 2 meters high. They flower best in clumps.
This is one of nature’s toughest plants and will grow in full sun or semi shade. They are ideal to plant in dry conditions but they will also grow in moist well-drained acidic conditions. They respond well to regular feeding and a seasonal top dressing with a compost high in nitrogen.
Bird of Paradise provides bulk and mass to your garden. Use in shrub borders and in planting islands and containers. Makes a showy and non-messy plant next to the pool. A potted specimen is a nice gift as a feature plant for the home or office. The flowers are long-lasting and widely used in flower arrangements. Ed.

The first outing of the newly formed Mawson Lakes Photography Club (MLPC) is a photo walk on Sunday, 25 November. Club coordinator Andreas Kiermeier said you will have an opportunity to get help with technical aspects of photography, learn to develop your creativity, meet like-minded “photogs,” and have fun.
There is no need to book and you can bring the whole family. After the walk the group will have morning tea at a local coffee shop.
The new club is for anyone who likes taking photos, no matter what your skill level.
“If you would like to improve your photography skills or experiment with your camera, such as light painting (see photo above) you will receive help,” said Andreas.
“It doesn’t matter what camera you use (including camera phones) or what age you are. My boys, aged 5 and 8, both love photography.”
The photo walk will meet at 9am at the Denison Centre and walk through Mawson Lakes, taking photos of the ordinary and the extra-ordinary.

You may have seen us running around the streets of Mawson Lakes or slogging it out on Mobara Park, you may have seen the Step into Life ute driving around or one of our fliers in the mailbox – so why haven’t you come and tried us yet?
All the Step into Life classes are structured so that we can have people from all fitness levels working together so that nobody gets left behind and nobody has to slow down – you work at your level and there is never any pressure from anyone in the group to do more than what you are capable of, in fact, you are more likely to get encouragement along the way!
We have been operating from Mobara Park now since Monday September 17th 2007 and nearly 500 people have come and worked out with Step into Life in that time! Local residents just like you, men & women all from varying backgrounds, sizes, shapes and fitness levels.
We were awarded Fitness Australia’s People’s Choice Award in 2009 and a Finalist in the Personal Training business of the year in 2010. A big reason for this is the environment we have created at Step into Life. Everyone of our members are welcoming and friendly and love new people to train with.
We have many members now who have been with us for 3 to 4 years and one original member Claire who has been here since week 2 of operation! Young actor Emily Morris from Mawson Lakes (pictured front) is a lead star in the new family movie A Second Chance that premiers in Adelaide this month.
The feature film shot on location in Adelaide, is about a young girl who quits gymnastics after a tragic accident. Fifteen years later she is drawn back to the sport as a coach with a chance for her students to enter the national gymnastics squad.
Emily (14), who plays Maddie, said it’s a story about forgiving and moving on. “It’s a film to inspire young people and show them that everyone can have a second chance.”
Emily’s sister Caitlin (11) is also in the movie as an extra.
Emily’s acting was acclaimed at the International Family Film Festival where she came second in the BEST CHILD ACTOR category.

Termites are on the move and November is one of their most active times.
All homes need to have an annual termite inspection, even new homes and if your home is 5 or more years old it may no longer be protected by the chemical treatment that was done pre construction. Manufactures of termite protection products all state that an annual termite inspection needs to be carried out by a licenced timber pest inspector so don’t delay in making sure that your home is still protected against Termites.

show their company card with their identity and say the contact details of the company they represent and why they are at your door.
tell you about your right to cancel the contract if you change your mind.
allow a 10 day cooling off period if you change your mind.
leave immediately if asked to do so and not return for 30 days.

Claudine Spinner has been appointed by the City of Salisbury as the new Community Development Coordinator for Mawson Lakes. You will find her in The Mawson Centre.
With a background in human resources, a degree in Business Studies and a Master of Business Administration, Claudine is eager to develop local community networks. She comes from Melbourne where she was the manager of a community centre.
Claudine says that a strong community has holistic benefits. “When people know and understand each other and look out for each other it reduces crime, adds to the economy and makes for a happy place to live and work.”
Her role involves facilitating vocational opportunities by providing pathways to further education, assisting the long term unemployed and offering job readiness and skills courses. Another enjoyable aspect is ensuring social wellbeing by connecting different groups within the community, for example, mothers with young children and different cultural groups. She will do this by providing information, facilities for meetings, and organising community events such as festivals, displays, holiday programs and craft and art workshops that bring people together. One of Claudine’s first community events is a Christmas Market at The Mawson Centre on Sat 8 December. All community groups and local businesses are invited to apply for a display table. What you’ll need:
2 paper cups
A sharp pencil to help poke holes
String (kite string or fishing line works well)
Instructions:
1. Cut a long piece of string, you can experiment with different lengths but perhaps 20 metres is a good place to start.
2. Poke a small hole in the bottom of each cup.
3. Thread the string through each cup and tie knots at each end to stop it pulling through the cup (or you can use a paper clip to hold the string in place).
4. Move into position with you and a friend holding the cups at a distance that makes the string tight (making sure the string isn’t touching anything else).
