ARTISAN SOURDOUGH & SWEETS

While driving east on Kedron Road, keep an eye out for a smartly crafted white self-serve stand on the north side of the road just before you reach Franklin Pike. Kedron’s Little Loafery, a micro bakery stocked on Saturdays, offers slow-made artisan sourdough and sweets and is the culmination of hard work, a dream, and true entrepreneurship.

Kaylyn Meade is the talented baker behind the self-serve roadside stand, as well as a devoted wife, homemaker, and stay-at-home mom to four young daughters Brielle (5), Delilah (3), Mallory (2), and Lorelei (7 months). The oldest of nine children, Meade was homeschooled, an experience that nurtured her independence and confidence, ultimately giving her the faith and courage to pursue her dream of opening the Little Loafery. As Meade explained, “My whole family is entrepreneurial-minded and very creative. As an adult, I love creating, especially with my hands. I love to sew and bake, and I have always wanted to start my own business, but didn't know what it should be.”

Over the years, Meade had experimented with various business endeavors, but she didn’t feel that any of them were the right fit for her lifestyle. In 2020, like many did during the pandemic, she began making sourdough bread. “I love to create a lot of different things. I like to start different projects and maybe not finish them,” Meade laughed. “So it was on and off and for a while with the sourdough. I ultimately concluded that I disliked sourdough and no longer wanted to work with it. I was stuck in the hustle culture, and I think that’s why I didn’t like it at that time.” Like many, Meade loved the taste of sourdough bread, but didn't enjoy the slow fermenting process of making the bread.

Fast forward to 2024 Meade and her family live next door to her parents. On May 8, when the tornado tore through the area, they all took shelter in her parents’ basement. Above them, her parents’ house was completely destroyed everything leveled in an instant. “This just put everything into perspective. We are all still alive today when we didn’t know if we were going to make it,” she said.

When Meade’s life finally began to settle down after the tornado, she began making sourdough again in November 2024. “When we started to get into a slower season of life, I picked up making sourdough again, and it became therapeutic for me. From shaping the dough and scoring to baking, it makes the outcome that much more enjoyable. My children and husband love having homemade bread. It’s a lot better for you than store-bought, and it tastes better,” Meade said. “So that ignited my passion for sourdough, and why I fell in love with sourdough baking.”

One day, as Meade was scrolling through social media, she stumbled upon a post featuring a bread stand. This inspired Meade to pursue the business side of her dream. “I saw somebody who had a bread stand, and that planted the seed for me. From there, I shared it with my mom and husband, and it seemed like a fun thing to do. We live on a couple of acres and are pursuing the homestead life, and felt having this little community stand on Kedron Road would be an extension of our lifestyle,” she said.

As the seed began to grow, planning for the bread stand construction started, and Meade worked on perfecting her recipes. “It was a family affair,” Meade said. “Ron, my husband, watched the four girls while I worked on the plans and my recipes. My dad, who owns a construction business, and my siblings helped build the stand. It was a lot of hard work, but when the stand was finished, it was worth it. I love how it turned out.”

In late April 2025, opening weekend for Meade’s cottage industry finally arrived. Like any new business owner, Meade felt a mix of nerves and excitement she wanted every detail to be just right. After sharing a few photos on social media, things took off. Word spread, enthusiasm grew, and the bread sold out within hours.

In addition to sourdough bread, the stand is stocked with Soft Baked Chocolate Chip Cookies, which are NOT made using sourdough, Brown Butter Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls, and specialty loaves, such as Roasted Garlic and Rosemary or Jalapeño Cheddar Sourdough. Meade introduced a Lemon Blueberry Sourdough Loaf for summer and plans to offer more seasonal specialty loaves. “I haven’t narrowed down a fall flavor yet, but for sure something pumpkin,” she said.

The stand is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. through sundown or until sold out. Meade accepts pre-orders through HotPlate to guarantee a loaf; otherwise, it’s first come, first served. All items are available for pre-order except the individual chocolate chip cookies. For graband-go purchases, payment can be made with cash or card at the self-serve stand, which operates on the honor system.

“I am so excited to be able to do something like this today. I believe that my family was protected by God during the tornado, and surviving it definitely puts everything into perspective. To be alive and able to promote community relationships now and support local through my bakery stand, it’s amazing how it all came together,” concluded Meade. n

LIGHTING THE WAY

As a Registered Interior Designer, one of the statements I hear frequently is, “I’d rather have a space with good lighting and no furniture than a furnished space without good lighting!” Thank goodness the days of lighting plans that consisted of four cans and a ceiling fan are long gone. Remember those fluorescent boxes on kitchen ceilings? Yikes!

Too often, the importance of lighting is overlooked, or insufficient funds are allocated in the overall budget, which prevents consideration of the three key elements when planning for lighting: general, task, and ambient lighting. This layered approach provides safety, efficiency, and beauty through lighting.

PHOTOS BY REED BROWN

GENERAL LIGHTING

General lighting in a house illuminates the way, ensuring the inhabitants can move through a space safely and perform basic tasks like cleaning and maintenance with ease.

TASK LIGHTING

Task lighting, on the other hand, is focused on areas that require extra brightness to perform certain tasks. For example, under-upper-cabinet lighting so that the countertop space is well-lit, better to snip off the end of a carrot than the tip of a finger, a lamp positioned for reading, or spotlights aimed at sinks to assist with washing vegetables and prepping meals, and proper lighting over cooktops helps one keep an eye on the progress of cooking.

AMBIENT LIGHTING

Ambient lighting sets the mood, highlights art or architectural features, showcases interior and exterior cabinet finishes, and generally provides an aesthetically pleasing backdrop, while also adding some drama if you choose.

Tiny recessed lights provide general illumination but with a “quiet ceiling,” meaning the eye barely notices the lights in the ceiling. Notice how all the work/task surfaces are well-lit, the upper storage cabinets are lit behind glass doors, and the cove lighting in the recessed area over the island highlights the black leather feature.

As the master of light, James Turrell said, “Lighting should not only illuminate objects but also evoke feelings and create moods.” With literally thousands of great-looking light fixtures available today, selecting the right fixtures can be quite challenging. Appropriate sizes for various spaces, the temperature in Kelvin of the color of light the fixtures’ bulbs will provide, and the number of lumens, or light output in foot candles, are all factors to be considered for each and every light fixture.

For example, 2700Kelvin (K) will produce a nice, warm light, appropriate in some areas of residential settings. However, many areas in a home will be better suited for a 3,000K or 3500K, which will give off the most accurate white-ish light, and provide an accurate rendition of actual colors in a room, including paint, fabrics, carpet, stained wood, and tile. Switch to 4,000K or 5,000K, though, and you will wind up with all the colors in your space having a grayed or slight bluish tint—totally changes the perception of colors! That warm taupe color in the tile you just selected is suddenly gray! See what light temp you like best, then select all your materials and finishes under that color temp to avoid unpleasant surprises later.

If possible, incorporating natural light through windows, skylights, transoms, and other openings is important in an overall lighting plan. A space with a blend of natural and artificial light supports well-being and promotes safety by reducing the risk of accidents.

As people age, they need more and often brighter light to see as well as they did when they were younger. Ocular fluid in eyes yellows with age, so again, the importance of the correct Kelvin temperature of the light is paramount — perhaps a 2700K bulb looks warm and cozy to a younger person. Still, the older individual may feel like it’s dim and too yellow. The ages, activities, and needs of individuals should be considered when preparing a lighting plan. As with all interiors, function is the priority, followed by form.

Provide both natural and artificial light where possible.

Accent lighting under the front edge of the bench highlights an architectural feature, provides a backdrop for the custom table, and makes messes easier to see/clean up on the floor.

When possible, it is important to hire a professional to design a lighting plan. A designer can develop a lighting plan based on your furniture placement, cabinet and plumbing plans, artwork locations, and elevations. They will also select appropriate light fixtures, provide detailed specifications for your electrician, and recommend the bulbs to be used in each fixture. Planning your lighting from the start is not only more efficient, but it can also save you significantly, as it is far more expensive to go back and retrofit the lighting at the end of a project! n

GOOD LIGHTING DESIGN CAN MAKE A SPACE, BUT GREAT LIGHTING CAN TRANSFORM IT.

THE ART & IMPACT OF AN EYE FOR THE EDIT

HOME

Staging

Whenevaluating a home that is about to hit the market, the first step is to go room by room and take an inventory, not of what is in the house, but of what needs to be edited out of the home. That could entail rearranging furniture, clearing surfaces, swapping out a rug, or even adding a few key staging pieces. The goal of staging a home is to, digitally through online marketing, create an image that draws a Buyer in and, physically when they visit the home in person, allows them to visualize themselves living in the home. A well-staged home will create an instant connection with a Buyer from the moment they walk through the door.

The word Staging can sometimes be interpreted as a full home makeover. At Baker Group, the most basic service available to all clients is a simple Home Edit. Sometimes it’s just about seeing the home with fresh eyes. This process involves rearranging existing pieces and removing excessive items. A skilled Listing Agent can walk into a room and quickly eye what needs to be simplified, softened, or slightly shifted to make the space feel open, inviting, modern, and memorable.

STAGING TIP

THE RULE OF ODD NUMBERS

DECORATING IN GROUPS OF 3 OR 5 CREATES A MORE DYNAMIC & ENGAGING SPACE.

To create an open feel in a home, clients are asked to think of their surfaces as airplane runways clean, clear, and ready for takeoff. That means countertops, nightstands, side tables, and mantels should be decluttered, with just a few intentional pieces left to create a clean line and inviting flow.

The next step up in staging a home combines the Simple Home Edit with more intensive work, including painting, moderate repairs, and the addition of a few new key pieces of furniture, art, and home décor from Baker Group’s staging collection.

The impact of the Moderate Home Staging is huge. Spaces feel elevated, aspirational, and more importantly, a home will photograph beautifully.

THE FINAL AND MOST INTENSIVE STAGING SERVICE OFFERED AT BAKER GROUP IS WHOLE HOME STAGING, WHICH INCLUDES THE FIRST TWO LEVELS OF SERVICE PLUS THE INSTALLATION OF STAGING FURNITURE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE HOME.

The final and most intensive staging service offered at Baker Group is Whole Home Staging, which includes the first two levels of service plus the installation of staging furniture throughout the entire home. A third-party home staging service or local furniture store may be brought in to decorate the whole house in partnership with Baker Group.

Today’s buyers decide whether they want to buy a home with just the simple scroll of a smartphone, and photos are the first showing. A house must stand out digitally, or it will be lost in a sea of other online options. Thoughtful staging and professional photos are the call to action for a Buyer to make an in-person showing appointment.

The truth is, staging isn’t about perfection; it’s about perception. It’s about making small, strategic changes that help Buyers see the potential of your home as their own. And more often than not, those minor edits make a significant difference in both how quickly a home sells and what it sells for.

Baker Group Realty can bring their personal eye for editing to any home getting ready to list. The first step is to schedule a Staging Consultation where a Seller will receive honest advice on the best path forward to marketing their home. COLUMBIA STATE’S PERFORMANCE SERIES ENTERS ITS 23RD SEASON

Ina town rich with history, charm, and Southern spirit, one cultural treasure has quietly enriched community life Columbia State Community College’s Performance Series. For more than two decades, Tennessee’s first community college has curated remarkable performances, offering audiences the opportunity to experience exceptional music from familiar favorites to rising stars.

Now entering its 23rd season, the Performance Series at Columbia State’s Cherry Theater continues its tradition of presenting worldclass talent in an acoustically rich, intimate setting. From rock to bluegrass, classical to country, the series delivers high-caliber performances across multiple genres.

Nestled on the Columbia Campus one of the college’s five regional campuses the 500-seat Cherry Theater combines smalltown hospitality with big-stage quality. Audiences enjoy an inviting atmosphere paired with exceptional live music. Free parking, convenient access, and a complimentary art exhibit in the Pryor Art Gallery, held before each performance, make every visit enjoyable and accessible to the community.

“The series offers high-quality performances with artists recognized within their genres for their talent,” said Bethany Lay, Columbia State vice president for advancement and executive director of the Columbia State Foundation. “You’ll enjoy a fun night of entertainment while enriching the community by supporting the arts. Thanks to our sponsors and patrons, we’re able to keep ticket prices affordable and bring these performances to our region.”

This season offers something for every musical appetite. Storytelling charm and Southern wit open the season with Sean of the South, whose blend of humor, heart, and front-porch wisdom has earned him a devoted following. Next, acclaimed songwriter and bassist Scott Mulvahill brings jaw-dropping musicianship and soulful vocals to the stage a performance guaranteed to leave an impression.

A holiday highlight follows as The Irish Tenors, accompanied by an 18-piece orchestra, fill the Cherry Theater with classic Christmas favorites. Their rich, soaring harmonies and dynamic arrangements have captivated audiences worldwide. This December, they’ll bring that same magic to Middle Tennessee the perfect way to usher in the season.

The lineup continues with The French Family Band, known for their authentic sound, tight-knit harmonies, and music rooted in family and faith. Bluegrass enthusiasts and newcomers alike won’t want to miss The Kody Norris Show, an ensemble blending tradition, energy, and showmanship. Rounding out the season, The Platters, a carefully hand-selected group carrying on the legacy of the original ensemble, bring their smooth, timeless sound to the Cherry Theater. Audiences can expect classics like “Only You” and “The Great Pretender” — proof that great songs never go out of style.

The Performance Series is made possible by the generosity of First Farmers & Merchants Bank, whose ongoing title sponsorship reflects their dedication to the arts and community life. “As the long-standing title sponsor for the Columbia State Performance Series, we are honored to support an initiative that brings the magic of the performing arts to our community. This series, spearheaded by the Columbia State Foundation, is a lifeline of cultural and educational enrichment,” said First Farmers Chief Executive Officer Brian K. Williams. “Our investment supports the work of the Foundation to help ensure these transformative experiences remain accessible, underscoring our commitment to fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and culturally enriched community.”

Beyond the performances, it’s the audience and hospitality teams who make the series truly special. Ushers include a welcoming mix of Columbia State alumni, familiar faces from the community, and music lovers eager to share the experience with others. The audience reflects the spirit of the region some have been attending for years, while others are discovering the Performance Series for the first time all drawn by the quality of music and a shared commitment to supporting the arts.

“From the initial planning stages to the night of the performance, our goal is to bring beautiful artistry to our community,” said Director of Events and Alumni Relations Tammy Rosson, who manages contracts, coordinates with performers, and oversees ticket holder hospitality, from ticketing to night-of-show details. “We strive to create a welcoming environment where audiences can enjoy familiar favorites, discover new voices, and connect with others, making each performance a unique and memorable experience that brings our community together.”

With extensive experience in managing performing arts events, Columbia State’s Theater and Event Services Coordinator, Lili Eubank, understands what it takes to create a truly memorable experience for both artists and audiences.

“Managing a live performance venue is like conducting an orchestra,” said Eubank. “While planning sets the stage, it’s the day-of coordination making sure every technical detail is in place that truly brings each unique show to life. Every performance is its own symphony of creativity, connection, and community, and helping artists and audiences come together has been my passion for many years.”

At just $35 per ticket (fees included), with free parking and a complimentary art exhibit before each show, the Performance Series offers a world-class arts experience in the heart of Middle Tennessee, without the downtown hassle or big-city price tag.

As one of the largest performance venues in Maury County, the Cherry Theater has been providing unforgettable evenings of music for more than two decades yet many still don’t realize the caliber of talent happening just around the corner. This season, Columbia State is on a mission to change that.

Whether you’re a devoted supporter or ready to experience something new, the 23rd Performance Series offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy outstanding music, engaging stories, and the kind of evening that stays with you long after the final note. n

BRING THOSE

AUTUMN COLORS Inside !

In

the South, fall transitions us from long, hot summer days to the cold winter season, and what a glorious transition it can be!  Characterized by shorter days, the colorful foliage emerges as temperatures drop and trees create beautiful displays of vibrant hues, including deep reds, rusty oranges, and pops of yellow. We tend to want to mimic these elements inside our homes. Bringing in some autumnal colors with pillows, tossing a textural throw blanket across a club chair, and adding in some bright, rich fall colors will bring the autumn vibes full circle.

Pillows are to be used and enjoyed. They give cozy support on a sofa or chair, plus an added design element to pull your furnishings together. Even if your color palette doesn't change for the fall season, simply introducing a few extra pillows creates that added layer we appreciate during a cooler season. A demure leopard fabric is one of my go-to layers to bring autumn into a room. Leopard is a neutral design element and gives a bit of chic to an otherwise casual season, and has that natural component we look for as we prepare for fall.  A neutral leopard pattern can coordinate well with your year-round florals and stripes, and when paired with solids, it serves as the perfect finishing touch.

How to get that texture we desire in the fall?  A throw blanket, which you toss across a club chair or sofa, can be made from a woven knit or even a nubby chenille. Knotted fringe elevates your textures further. One of my favorite texture items is a bowl of acorns. I have collected them since my son was little and look forward to styling them each year. Try filling an antique jar with tiny faux persimmons or kumquats. It's easy, they're colorful, and can be reused again and again. You can style a small vignette with a jar or glass container filled with your fall fruits, along with perhaps a wooden dough bowl.

The element of natural wood adds texture and an inviting feel to your home on cooler days and nights. I love a great antique dough bowl, but there are so many reproductions out there that work just as well. A wooden cutting or charcuterie board works well in the place of a dough bowl. A metal element goes handin-hand with the wood, so consider adding some brass candlesticks for a warm tone.  Taper candles are inexpensive, and autumnal colors such as saffron, terracotta, or paprika will complement your vignette. Using odd numbers for candlesticks always works best.

I LOVE A GREAT ANTIQUE DOUGH BOWL, BUT THERE ARE SO MANY REPRODUCTIONS OUT THERE THAT WORK JUST AS WELL.

If we have met or you follow me on Instagram, you know my affinity for blue and white. Blue and white for autumn is spot on! My love language is fresh flowers, and there are some dazzling ones that are abundant in autumn. An arrangement of faux bittersweet can be so beautiful and last you from September through Thanksgiving. Shades of orange mixed with blue and white chinoiserie make for the perfect color complement. A tall vase on an entry table or dining room buffet makes a colorful statement to bring the season indoors. Blue and white is a classic, but brown transferware is a staple. I popped a couple of vintage transferware dinner plates into my corner cupboard, and it works well as a darker-toned fall accent. Plates are always useful for decorating, and they don't have to match! A good coordinating pattern will pull it all together.

September is the beginning of one of our most beautiful and temperate seasons, and should be enjoyed inside our homes and in our outdoor living areas. The social season explodes in September, too; dinner parties, hayrides, trick-or-treating, and fall and holiday open houses approach, filling our calendars, and the excitement of planning Thanksgiving with friends and family begins.

Start now to prep your porch and add those warm, comfortable touches to your interiors; you'll be set and ready for October and November. As November arrives, we are all busy organizing family gatherings and the upcoming holiday in December. You'll be glad you planned ahead and can sit back to enjoy all that autumn has to offer. n
