Mother's Day!

Wewanted to celebrate Mother’s Day with our readers the day dedicated to honoring moms, motherhood, and maternal figures. It’s a chance to show the most important woman in your life appreciation for her sacrifices and unconditional love. While flowers and cards are always an appreciated gesture, true pampering means going above and beyond the usual gifts.

This year, shower Mom with thoughtful acts of kindness. Start with a leisurely morning, perhaps serving her favorite breakfast in bed or taking her to a luxurious brunch in Music City at the Bobby Hotel’s Union Tavern or Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille in Franklin. Let her enjoy the day free from responsibilities by planning a spa day at MassageLuXe with a facial and massage or organizing a peaceful day in nature at Cheekwood Estates & Gardens, leisurely walking the stunning gardens. If she enjoys experiential activities, consider a wine tasting and picnic at Arrington Vineyards or a night at the Grand Ole Opry watching the live country music radio broadcast.

Make your gift meaningful, one that comes from the heart or has sentimental value. It’s about thought and effort, like a handwritten letter expressing your gratitude on a beautiful card from Amy Montgomery Home, a stylish new outfit from Aubree P. Boutique in her favorite color, some trendy accessories at Birdy Grace Boutique, or stop by Total Wine & More and pick up her favorite wine or champagne to celebrate the occasion.

This Mother’s Day exceed her expectations. Take it to the next level and give Mom the gift of relaxation, appreciation, and unforgettable moments. She’s spent a lifetime caring for others so make this day extra special to ensure she feels just as cared for in return. Whether near or far, tell Mom you love her by saying a heartfelt thank you for all she’s done. And in June, don’t forget to show some love to Dad on Father’s Day. He’s pretty special, too!

TAYLOR HUGHES

NOT YOUR TYPICAL COUNTRY ARTIST

PHOTOS BY JAMES HOPPER PHOTOGRAPHY

Getready to dance and reminisce with Taylor Hughes’s new single, “Old Fashioned You.” This past March, Hughes released this upbeat, high-energy country anthem that’s sure to get you on your feet. “Old Fashioned You” is a lively, feel-good track that takes listeners on a fun-filled journey through the complexities of love, relationships, and, of course, cocktails.

The catchy single tells the tale of a singer reflecting on past romances that didn’t measure up — each one likened to a different drink. From Jack Daniels and PBR to complex concoctions, it becomes clear that nothing beats the simplicity, charm, and timeless appeal of an old fashioned. With its infectious rhythm, clever lyrics, and undeniable energy, “Old Fashioned You” reminds us that the best love — like the classic cocktail — is simple, smooth, and never goes out of style.

“This song is all about looking at past relationships through a fun and lighthearted lens,” said Hughes. “Sometimes we get caught up in all the complicated versions of love, but the truth is, the best love is the kind that’s simple and classic. And just like an old fashioned, it’s the best choice.”

Music lovers can expect an electrifying mix of country flair, clever lyrics, and a message that hits home for anyone who’s navigated love’s twists and turns through a bumpy relationship. Whether you’re reminiscing about the past or embracing the beauty of the simplicity of true love and romance, “Old Fashioned You” will have you dancing, laughing, and maybe even rethinking your choices in love.

Hughes isn’t your average country musician. As a country artist and songwriter, she blends southern rock and blues influences with a bold, soulful, and unmistakably sassy sound that commands attention. A Lexington, Kentucky native, Hughes now calls Spring Hill, Tennessee, home where she has been making waves in the music scene. Award-winning gospel singer and vocal coach Christy Sutherland describes her voice as “rich chocolate cake with soul.” At the same time, The Tennessee Star magazine has dubbed her “country music’s answer to Adele.”

Last year was an incredible year for Hughes. She kicked off 2024 by being named Female Vocalist of the Year at the 10th annual Lexi Music Awards in Kentucky, where her song “Jesus and Jail” also took home Song of the Year. Hughes continued her winning streak with two nominations at the 2024 Josie Music Awards, held at the Grand Ole Opry, where she was honored as the Southern Rock/Country Rock Female Vocalist of the Year. Adding to her list of achievements, Hughes secured her first song cut of the year on Whey Jennings's highly anticipated debut album, Jekyll & Hyde. The track, released as a single, gained traction on Sirius XM radio and was even selected for an official music video. Hughes continues to make serious waves in the country music scene and has no plans of stopping in 2025. n

“Old Fashioned You” is available on all streaming platforms. Stay connected with Taylor Hughes on social media at @taylorhughesmusic for exclusive behind-the-scenes content. Visit taylorhughesmusic.com for tour updates and sip, dance, and celebrate the joy of classic love with “Old Fashioned You!”

THE EXPERIENCE LAB BY charity: water

A JOURNEY INTO THE GLOBAL WATER CRISIS

PHOTOS BY PARKER YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHY

Bringing the Global Water Crisis Home — charity: water’s Experience Lab Opens at The Factory at Franklin

In a world where clean water flows effortlessly from our taps, it’s easy to forget that 703 million people still lack access to this basic necessity. For millions, the daily struggle to find safe drinking water is a harsh reality that affects every aspect of their lives. Charity: water, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing clean water to every person on the planet, has long been a leader in innovative fundraising and awareness efforts.

They have created the 100% charity model, where one hundred percent of public donations directly fund water projects, while separate private donors cover the charity’s overhead costs;  The Pool, a unique way for entrepreneurs to donate private shares in their company to be liquidated to provide clean water; and the Bitcoin Trust, securing 100 Bitcoin and holding until 2025 now valued at just under $10M to fund clean water.

Charity: water’s newest innovation is The Experience Lab, a firstof-its-kind immersive storytelling space designed to bring the global water crisis to life. Funded by a single anonymous donor, The Experience Lab officially opened at the Factory at Franklin on March 22, 2025. More than just an exhibit, the Lab offers an emotionally and sensorially rich journey, following the story of a family in Uganda’s Kiryandongo District. Visitors step into the lives of 37-year-old Likiso and her two daughters, 15-year-old Esther and 10-year-old Grace, witnessing firsthand how access to clean water can transform lives.

The Experience Lab is the brainchild of Scott Harrison, founder and CEO of charity: water, a former New York City nightclub promoter whose life was transformed after volunteering on a medical ship in Liberia. Harrison spent 10 years helping people get into the best clubs and worrying about which private plane he would take next. Tired of the superficial nights out, he realized he didn’t like what he was doing with his life and seized the opportunity to volunteer as a photojournalist aboard a hospital ship off the coast of Liberia, West Africa.

Witnessing the devastating impact of dirty water the leading cause of disease in the region he dedicated himself to solving the crisis, launching charity: water in 2006. Today, the organization has raised over $1 billion, provided clean water to 20.2 million people, and funded more than 184,000 water projects in 29 countries through partnerships with best-in-class local organizations working in their respective countries and communities.

However, there are still 703 million people without access to clean water. Harrison created The Experience Lab to accelerate this work, turning awareness into urgent action. “We believe that when people truly understand the need for clean water around the world, they’ll be inspired to engage,” says Harrison. “In a world where it's almost impossible to have someone's undivided attention, we use this hour to create a space where you can’t look away from the problem.”

A Journey Through the Crisis

The Experience Lab is designed to be deeply immersive, using cutting-edge technology to transport visitors into the daily lives of those who lack access to clean water. One of the most impactful features is the Water Walk, a 4D experience where visitors pick up a jerry can and walk alongside Esther as she embarks on her daily journey to fetch water. The environment– complete with heat, sights, sounds, and textures–recreates a fraction of the harsh realities of her trek. One that women and girls around the world make every day, averaging 3.7 miles each day.

Visitors then peer through a microscope to observe bacteria found in contaminated water, interact with a stunning art piece representing the colors of dirty water, and engage with a pump-styled interactive exhibit showcasing charity: water’s diverse solutions, from drilled wells and piped systems to biosand filters and rainwater catchments. Each step of the tour is designed to build a deeper understanding of both the crisis and its solutions.

The final experience in the Lab shifts focus to Grace, the younger sister of Esther. A state-ofthe-art virtual reality (VR) film allows visitors to spend seven minutes immersed in her world. At first, they see her struggle to make it to school after spending her mornings fetching water. “I feel like water is ruining my life,” Grace narrates. But the experience doesn’t end in despair. Visitors witness a charity: water funded team arriving in her village, drilling a well, and seeing clean water burst from the ground for the first time. It’s a moment of hope and transformation that drives home the profound impact of access to clean water.

More Than an Exhibit—A Call to Action

The Experience Lab is designed not only to educate but also to inspire action. By the end of their visit, guests are encouraged to take practical steps to help end the global water crisis—by giving every month as a member of The Spring for as little as $10/month, sponsoring an entire water project for $10,000, or taking a kid’s piggy bank to raise funds and awareness as a family. The impact has already been significant.

Visitors to The Experience Lab have been raving about the experience, highlighting the impact that they’ve been able to feel in their Tennessee hometown. “The lab opened my children’s eyes to the reality of the water crisis affecting 10% of the world,” says Shanda Damphouse. “It transformed their understanding into empathy and action, inspiring them to donate and become part of the solution.”

Among the many who have been moved to action is Hudson Dyer, a young boy who was so inspired by his visit that he started his fundraiser. On opening night, charity: water announced that Hudson had raised $10,000—enough to fully fund a water project for an entire community. “Seeing people like Hudson take immediate action gives us hope that we can solve this crisis in our lifetime,” says Ben Greene, Chief Revenue Officer of charity: water.

A Gift to Franklin’s Community

For the Franklin community, The Experience Lab is more than just an attraction—it’s an opportunity for families to bond over a shared mission. The interactive elements engage both children and adults, fostering a deeper understanding of global issues and a renewed sense of empathy. The Lab also serves as a model for the future of immersive philanthropy, a concept that Harrison envisions expanding beyond Franklin. “Imagine you’re at the airport, and you see a VR booth: Flight delayed? Take seven minutes going to Africa and back,” he says. “This is just the beginning.” n

A STYLISH SPRING and Mother's Day!

Aubree and her mother, Vicki Phillips.
PHOTOS PROVIDED

Whetheryou're a mom, grandmother, godmother, dog mom, or a special mother figure, you deserve to be celebrated—and to look fabulous this Mother’s Day! Have you picked out your outfit for this special day yet? Whether you're heading to church, enjoying Sunday brunch, gathering with family and friends, relaxing at home, or dressing up for a special dinner, make sure your look is as memorable as the day itself.

No matter what you are doing this Mother’s Day, pick out a stylish outfit with a touch of flair. Check out some of the latest trends for spring that we know you will love!

The Midi Dress

A flattering style that suits nearly everyone is the midi dress. Falling at the calf just above the ankle, it’s a length that is appropriate and versatile for any occasion and any age, from running errands to lunch with girlfriends to an afternoon graduation, a wedding shower, or a date night out. Add in pockets as a popular feature to most options, and they’re a no-brainer. The midi dress is a favorite of moms!

Floral Print

Blooming flowers signify that spring and summer are here, so let’s have them play a role in our fashions. Floral print dresses and blouses have long been popular, and spring 2025 is no exception. Prints that are bold and vibrant, featuring pastel colors of vintage toile or repeated block print florals, are all a feminine choice.

The Modern Cardigan

We have seen stylish cardigans, also known as lady jackets, ladylike jackets, or blazer cardigans, make a popular splash over the past few seasons, and they continue to be admired for spring and summer fashion. They are versatile, often featuring a more cropped and boxy silhouette, and can be worn either open or closed. With short or long sleeves, embellished buttons, decorative or fringe trim, and front pocket details, the modern cardigan is a closet staple. They are perfectly paired with jeans, slacks, or a satin midi skirt. A spring tweed or light-midweight knit fabric makes them versatile and transitional from spring to summer. The cardigan is ultra-feminine and chic!

Mother's Day Accessories & Gifts

The key to any fabulous outfit is the accessories. No outfit is complete without jewelry, a fabulous handbag, and stylish shoes. Here’s what is trending this spring.

Jewelry

Pearls will never go out of style for a woman in the South! We are loving the modern take on pearls as they are mixed with gold chains and pendants. Chunky chain necklaces with pendants are here to stay. Layer them with other necklaces, or wear them as a statement piece; they look fabulous with a tee, jeans, or a dress.

Handbags

Decorative straw and rattan bags with rhinestones, pearls, or bamboo handles are a favorite among moms! They are the epitome of a springtime or vacation bag that will make her smile with her outfit! Don’t shy away from color for bags a great color can complement an outfit so well and act as a neutral for many spring outfits.

For the practical mom or anyone, we love that crossbody straps have become a staple feature for most bags. Worn with a crossbody strap for travel or daytime, it’s an easy, hands-free experience. Remove the long straps to carry as a tophandle bag or clutch bag for evenings and events.

Shoes

Sandals, wedges, heels, oh my! Are you deciding between a flat or a heel for your Mother’s Day outfit? We love a woven stacked heel, a more decorative sandal, or espadrille wedges all of which look great with either jeans, dresses, or skirts. Keeping your shoes neutral will allow you to pair them with a wide range of colors and outfits in your closet.

Whether you're treating yourself (yes, you absolutely deserve it!) or searching for the perfect gift for a special lady in your life, Aubree P. REINVENTING SPACES FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER

“Well,

my bags are packed, I'm ready to go!” Except it's your kids who have packed up and left, and now you're standing in an oddly quiet house wondering what to do next. The once-bustling spaces that held science projects, sleepovers, and late-night snack raids are suddenly empty. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are perfect reminders that parenting never truly ends, but let’s be honest — this is your time now. Instead of treating your newfound square footage like a shrine to their teenage years, why not turn it into something that truly serves you? After all, you have earned it.

From Chaos to Calm

For years, your home may have felt like a never-ending game of Whac-A-Mole — laundry piles appearing out of nowhere, half-eaten granola bars wedged between couch cushions, and sports gear mysteriously multiplying. Now, it’s time to reclaim your space and bring in a sense of calm and sophistication. Imagine swapping the mismatched furniture and clutter for an elegant, curated design that reflects your refined taste. Soft, neutral color palettes, layered textures, and custom furnishings can transform your home into a luxurious retreat. With fewer people underfoot, you can finally embrace those high-end materials you once avoided — think plush velvet seating, statement lighting, and sleek marble countertops that don’t have to worry about juice box spills.

From Playroom to Chic Lounge, Library, or Luxury Guest Suite

That playroom with scuffed-up walls and bins overflowing with forgotten toys? It’s prime real estate for your new sophisticated lounge or a cozy home library. Picture floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, rich wood tones, and the perfect reading chair to finally enjoy a book uninterrupted. If you still want to keep a welcoming space for visiting family, consider transforming an old kid’s room into a luxurious guest suite. Think boutique hotel vibes — high-thread-count bedding, elegant wallpaper, and a spa-like ensuite. Your grown kids will appreciate having a stylish place to return to, and in the meantime, you can enjoy a beautiful space that no longer screams a teenager lived here.

From Homework Station to Wine Room or Home Office

That little nook once crammed with schoolbooks, laptop chargers, and abandoned science projects? It’s time for an upgrade. Convert it into a sleek home office where you can finally focus without distractions — or better yet, a curated wine room for evenings of effortless entertaining. Custom cabinetry, a stylish wet bar, and the perfect ambient lighting can turn a forgotten corner into your favorite place to unwind. Whether you choose productivity or indulgence, these smaller spaces can be reimagined to add real value to your daily life.

A New Beginning: Rethinking Your Floor Plan

Maybe it’s not just about repurposing rooms; it’s time for a whole new layout. If your current home no longer fits your lifestyle, why not consider a complete renovation or a new build? Downsizing doesn’t have to mean sacrificing luxury; it can mean maximizing every square foot for purposeful, elevated living. Openconcept designs, single-level layouts, and spa-inspired primary suites can bring unparalleled convenience and comfort. Whether you’re dreaming of a modern refresh, remodel, or new build, The Linen Duck Interior Design team specializes in transforming homes into stunning, functional spaces that evolve with you. Let’s turn your empty nest into your dream home. n

PHILANTHROPY

AND IMPACT INVESTING

THE

By Allen Buckley
NEW WEALTH MANAGEMENT PARADIGM

Thelandscape of wealth management is undergoing a transformative shift, where traditional philanthropy is increasingly intersecting with impact investing to form what many are heralding as the new paradigm for managing wealth. This convergence offers a dynamic way for individuals to align their financial goals with their values, aiming to generate both social good and financial returns. However, navigating this new terrain involves complexities and uncertainties that warrant careful planning and expert advice.

Understanding the Shift

n Philanthropy Reimagined: Historically, philanthropy has meant giving away wealth through grants or donations to charities. Now, it's evolving into a more strategic approach where donors seek not just to give but to invest in causes that offer a measurable impact. This shift is driven by a new generation of wealth holders who demand more than traditional goodwill; they want to see their contributions lead to systemic change.

n Impact Investing Defined: Impact investing goes beyond the traditional investment paradigm by intentionally addressing social and environmental issues alongside financial returns. It's about putting capital to work in ventures, organizations, or funds with the explicit aim of generating a positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return.

The Convergence

n Blending Goals: The convergence of philanthropy and impact investing allows wealth managers and their clients to pursue financial profitability while also aiming for social or environmental benefits. This dual focus can be seen in investments in sustainable energy, affordable housing, or companies with strong ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices.

n New Tools for Wealth Management: This paradigm introduces new financial instruments like Social Impact Bonds, where returns are contingent upon achieving specific social outcomes, or ProgramRelated Investments (PRIs) from foundations, which offer below-market returns but enable social entrepreneurship.

Complexities and Challenges

n Measurement of Impact: One of the significant challenges is quantifying the social or environmental impact. Unlike financial returns, impact metrics are less standardized, making it hard to assess the true benefit of an investment. This has led to the growth of impact measurement frameworks like the Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS) and the Global Impact Investing Rating System (GIIRS). However, the field is still in its infancy.

n Risk and Return: Impact investments often come with higher risks or lower financial returns compared to traditional investments. Balancing this with the desire for social good requires a nuanced understanding of both market dynamics and the social sector's needs.

n Tax Implications: The tax treatment of impact investments can be complex. For instance, while some investments might qualify for tax benefits similar to charitable donations, others might not, affecting the overall strategy for wealth management.

n Regulatory Environment: The regulatory landscape for impact investing varies by country and is still evolving, potentially introducing uncertainty regarding compliance, reporting, and legal structures for investments.

Uncertainties

n Market Maturity: The impact investing market, while growing, is not as liquid or established as traditional markets. This can lead to challenges in exiting investments or finding suitable opportunities that align perfectly with both impact and return goals.

n Long-term Sustainability: There's an ongoing debate about whether impact investments can truly maintain both social impact and financial viability over the long term, especially in volatile sectors like renewable energy or social services.

n Investor Education: Many investors are still learning about impact investing, which can lead to misconceptions or overly optimistic expectations about what can be achieved.

Seeking Guidance

Given these complexities, engaging with a financial advisor specializing in impact investing and philanthropy can be invaluable. A skilled advisor can:

n Tailor Strategies: They can help align your investment strategy with your values, ensuring that your financial decisions reflect your commitment to social or environmental causes.

n Navigate Tax and Legal Issues: Advisors can provide clarity on the tax implications and help structure investments to maximize both impact and financial efficiency.

n Monitor and Measure Impact: They can assist in selecting the right metrics and frameworks to measure and report on the impact of your investments.

n Educate and Advise: Keeping you informed about the evolving landscape of impact investing and philanthropy, ensuring your approach remains relevant and effective.

As wealth management evolves, the integration of philanthropy with impact investing not only redefines how individuals can use their wealth but also challenges traditional investment philosophies. However, this new paradigm is not without its hurdles. For those looking to make a difference with their wealth, the journey involves learning, adapting, and, often seeking expert guidance to navigate through the uncertainties and capitalize on opportunities for true impact. n

DRESSING ROOM RETREAT

THE CLOSET CONVERSION

Thestandard American closet is six feet long, twenty-four inches deep, and shared by two people. But what if there was a way to take an extra room in a house and create a dressing room?

A well-designed custom closet is more than just a place to store clothing it’s a personal retreat that brings another level of organization to one’s daily routine. Converting an extra bedroom into a spacious dressing room can elevate a home’s functionality and style. With thoughtful planning, additional cabinetry and storage, and a dash of personal style, one can create a dream space that feels like a daily boutique shopping experience.

A WELL-DESIGNED CUSTOM CLOSET IS MORE THAN JUST A PLACE

TO STORE CLOTHING — IT’S A PERSONAL RETREAT THAT BRINGS ANOTHER LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION TO ONE’S DAILY ROUTINE.

Planning a Custom Closet Conversion

Transforming an extra bedroom into a dressing room starts with a solid plan. Consider how the space will be used: Will the addition add hanging storage, drawers, or display areas for accessories? How important is a vanity for makeup and grooming? A homeowner should take inventory of their existing wardrobe and storage needs as the first step in designing a custom closet that truly works for their lifestyle.

A HOMEOWNER SHOULD TAKE INVENTORY OF THEIR EXISTING WARDROBE AND STORAGE NEEDS AS THE FIRST STEP IN DESIGNING A CUSTOM CLOSET.

Key Considerations

n Flow & Accessibility: If the bedroom is adjacent to the primary suite, consider reconfiguring access for a seamless transition. Local designer Marcia Lenci recently converted an extra guest bedroom off the primary suite into a stunning dressing room. The original hallway door to the guest bedroom was closed off, and a pocket door was added directly from the Primary Bedroom, creating a private, integrated space.

n Storage Needs: Plan for a mix of hanging rods, drawers, open shelves, and specialized compartments for shoes, handbags, and jewelry. Custom cabinetry ensures everything has its place while maintaining a sleek aesthetic. For a budget-friendly storage option, ready-made cabinets or vintage wardrobes and dressers can achieve the same goal.

n Lighting: Proper lighting enhances both function and ambiance. Consider a mix of recessed lighting, LED strip lights within cabinetry, and a statement chandelier to add a touch of personality to the space.

In the Marcia Lenci Design project, luxurious brass hardware complemented marble countertops, creating a sophisticated feel. A soft, patterned carpet added warmth and comfort underfoot, making the space inviting and plush.

Design Elements to Reflect Your Personal Style

n A Statement Chandelier: A dazzling light fixture is the room's focal point.

n Decorative Wallpaper or Paint: A soft, neutral palette keeps the space serene, while a bold accent wall can add personality.

n Full-Length Mirrors: Essential for outfit checks and creating the illusion of more space.

n Seating Area: A cozy bench or armchair makes the space inviting and functional.

n Beverage Station: Think of convenience! Adding a drink fridge or coffee bar can be a real game-changer.

Custom Cabinetry

Custom-built closets maximize every inch of space. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry provides ample storage while creating a seamless, built-in look. Consider incorporating features like:

n Glass-front cabinets for showcasing designer pieces.

n Velvet-lined drawers for jewelry and watches.

n Pull-out racks for ties, scarves, or belts.

n Adjustable shelving to accommodate changing wardrobe needs.

Creating a Functional & Stylish Vanity Area

A dedicated vanity space within a dressing room can replace the bathroom beauty routine. Whether someone prefers a built-in design or a standalone piece, a well-lit vanity provides the perfect spot for getting ready.

• Ample Counter Space: granite, marble, or quartz are the best options where makeup and skincare products will be used.

• Good Lighting: Install sconces or backlit mirrors for even illumination.

• Comfortable Seating: A plush stool or an upholstered chair adds comfort and style.

• Smart Storage: Drawers with dividers keep products organized.

A well-executed dressing room conversion creates an organized, beautiful space where getting dressed becomes a joyful, stress-free experience. Whether someone opts for a glamorous boutiqueinspired design or a minimalist, modern aesthetic, a custom-tailored closet makes all the difference.

By focusing on smart storage, personal style, and practical touches, anyone can turn an unused bedroom into the ultimate dressing retreat! n

Southern Wedding THE PERFECT AT-HOME

PHOTOS BY HEATHER DURHAM PHOTOGRAPHY

Welcome to May and June! The South's most desirable time of year for a wedding. Weddings come in all different sizes and styles these days. The micro-wedding has gained popularity over the last few years, with brides focusing on spending time with family and friends in a more intimate setting. With smaller weddings and fewer guests, an at-home wedding could be the perfect solution for couples who want privacy and desire to spend more time with those attending.

A house with an open traffic pattern is best suited for hosting over 20-25 guests. If that space leads to an outdoor area, it can work even better. If you've been in the South for long, you know never to plan an outdoor event that is solely outdoor and in an uncovered area. Rain is always a possibility and can put a damper on an outdoor wedding or reception. The photos shared on these pages reflect the bride and groom's desire for an intimate event spent one-on-one with family and friends.

The location? The bride's parents' home. While the 1938 Tudor is quaint from the exterior viewpoint, the open main floor interior allowed for the perfect ceremony, which included only parents, siblings, and sibling spouses. The ceremony, attended by the bride, groom, minister, and eight guests, was held in the spacious formal dining room. The dining room table featured a large arrangement of fresh flowers for the ceremony, and the dining room chairs were used for seating guests.

The bride dressed in the guest bedroom upstairs, and when her time arrived to greet her groom, her father awaited her at the bottom of the steps. The staircase, draped in yellow and white roses with lush greenery and fresh magnolia, was beautiful for the bride's entrance and served as the perfect backdrop for the double-ring ceremony. The bride's choice of yellow roses complemented the forest green staircase walls and looked beautiful for early spring.

After the ceremony, the dining room chairs were stored in an upstairs bedroom, clearing the way for two caterers to set the dining table with an early cocktail supper. The flower arrangement from the ceremony was moved to the center of the table and was flanked all around by trays of beef tenderloin, chicken satay, roasted vegetables, and an extensive charcuterie selection. The extended family waited during the ceremony at the Airbnb, just across the street from the parents' home, so that photos could be taken immediately after the nuptials. At the same time, the inside was being transformed for the cocktail supper for guests arriving in just a couple of hours.

The wedding cake table was located in the breakfast room. The breakfast room featured French doors that led to the covered veranda, where clothed tables and wooden bentwood chairs awaited guests. The bride's father hung clear sides to the veranda cover to protect the evening from any rain that might have come their way. Blessedly, there was not a drop of rain that early May Saturday. A tradition not held too often any longer, the bride and groom waited at the bottom of the staircase at the front door and greeted every guest as they arrived — such a very personal gesture to extend to your guests.

As guests moved from greeting the new couple, the staff served a variety of passed hors d' oeuvres. The flow of the house and the covered veranda allowed enough space for the bride, the groom, their families, and 38 guests to mingle easily. A little trick used to keep guests out of the kitchen worked very well. The caterers brought portable ovens and coolers and operated out of the lower-level garage. The florist covered every surface in the kitchen with greenery and florals, even the top of the range.

Music for the bride’s entrance and the reception was provided by a classical guitarist. The caterer's set-up time was used for him to transition to the veranda. Nothing too bold, simply understated, and the perfect background music for a lovely evening. The flower boxes on the veranda were "planted" with Boston ferns, fresh yellow roses, and greenery.

The guests were greeted at the front door with the front planter box filled to the brim with yellow roses and fresh greenery, along with evergreen topiaries surrounded by yellow roses. Small arrangements of the same flowers were placed on each table, draped with offwhite, textured linen cloths. The bride's parents' favorite local bartender served champagne and two signature drinks created by the bride and groom.

One of the sweetest moments of the day was the groom and his mother making the half-block walk to the local florist to pick up the bride's bouquet. Where else but in the quaint town of Columbia, Tennessee, could this be possible? There were so many small-town moments associated with this perfect at-home Southern wedding. The parents' friends who brought them two loads of fresh cut magnolia stands out as one of the sweetest gestures of the entire wedding week. The bride's mom's friend, a freelance florist, captured her vision of the house florals perfectly, while the local florist down the street was so accommodating to allow the groom and his mom to be photographed picking up the bouquet. Neighbors provided the pièce de résistance by moving nine cars off the narrow historic street to locations away from the house, as there was no off-street parking available in the downtown location. Indeed, it was undoubtedly the perfect at-home Southern wedding.  n

The Little Freckle that was ... MELANOMA

just a little freckle, right? Wrong! Since May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, I thought this was the perfect time to share a journey that shockingly ended up with the diagnosis of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and share precautions to prevent it. With over five million cases diagnosed each year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and prevention should be taken seriously.

It gets gory from here, and no one wants to experience what I am about to share, I promise! This story hits close to home as my husband, David, is the one who had that little freckle. As the story goes, the pivotal point was when the little freckled CHANGED it became darker brown and changed in size and shape.

WARNING

When you turn the page, it is medically graphic. Skip to page 50 if you would like to avoid the images.

For the past few years, David had had a little freckle about the size of a lentil on his right cheek. We all noticed it, and he had visited a dermatologist a few years ago, but it had started to change and was now the size of a small lima bean. Last July 4th, when our neighbor told him he had dirt on his face, I told him it was time for the not-solittle freckle to go. That said, I wanted it removed by a board-certified plastic surgeon because it was located in the middle of his cheek you know you want your face to look its best.

I made an appointment with Dr. Endara at PerfecTenn in Columbia to finally have the freckle removed. I will leave out the part where my husband almost faints when he gets injections in his face because of his vagus nerve that’s another story. As a precaution, Dr. Endara sent the lesion to pathology, and when the doctor personally called with the results, it was clear that the news was not good. It was melanoma, and now larger margins needed to be taken. Unfortunately, the following skin biopsy also showed melanoma.

At this time, Dr. Endara said, “This isn’t about looking pretty anymore. It is time to go see a dermatologist.” Dr. Endara’s office scheduled an appointment with Dr. Robb, a board-certified dermatologist at the Skin & Allergy Center in Spring Hill, to remove a significantly larger portion of my husband's cheek.

This time, we are talking about a gaping hole in his cheek and three and a half inches of stitches, but yet again, the margins were not clear. After one more biopsy, clear margins were finally attained.

After two months, four separate biopsies, and hundreds of stitches (slightly exaggerating), David was finally ready for the reconstruction of his right cheek. The procedure was under general anesthesia, and Dr. Endara took roughly 90 minutes to strategically rotate the skin on his cheek to minimize scarring and make sure the skin remained viable. Once again, as a precaution, another biopsy was sent to the pathologist.

First removal biopsy.
Dark brown area change in color and size.

When Dr. Endara called a week after surgery, it was with utter disbelief as the biopsy came back showing melanoma. How could this be possible? Even Dr. Robb thought it could be a false positive, so a sample was sent to an oncology pathologist for verification, where it was confirmed positive for melanoma AGAIN! The course of treatment this time was six weeks of a topical chemotherapy cream to attack the cancer cells. Once the treatment had been completed, the punch biopsies came back negative. Such good news!

Six months after the initial biopsy to remove a freckle, it was time for the final surgical procedure, which would thin out the grafted skin to make it flush with the rest of the cheek. This, too, was under general anesthesia at the hospital, but a much quicker procedure with minimal stitches. Of course, Dr. Endara did a stellar job!

As David’s cheek continues to heal, the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight. At his last appointment in March, Dr. Endara anticipated a little more thinning would be needed, an in-office procedure this time, and some microneedling to camouflage the scars later this summer. Now, I’m not allowed to tell David, “I told you so,” anymore, but ladies, if you need to wife-guilt your husband into going to the dermatologist DO IT!

The two key words I want everyone to remember are EARLY DETECTION. Let me say that again: EARLY DETECTION. What does early detection mean? It means going to the dermatologist for annual skin checks and understanding the importance of sun protection. The most notable point is that skin cancer is one of the most preventable and highly treatable cancers when detected early so there is hope. n

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, but when caught early, it is highly treatable. Here’s why regular skin checks are essential:

Early detection saves lives Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, has a high survival rate when detected early.

Skin cancer is the cancer you see Perform monthly self-exams to monitor any changes in your skin.

Reduce exposure to UV rays

Wear sunscreen and avoid the sun when UV rays are strongest, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Other risk factors

If you have fair skin, blonde or red hair, blue or green eyes, a family history of skin cancer, many moles, or a history of excessive sun exposure, you’re at a higher risk and should prioritize regular screenings.

Peace of Mind

Stay proactive and schedule an annual skin exam with a dermatologist.

LEADERS CONNECT TO THE WORLD

TENNESSEE HOSPITALITY & TRAVEL

Afour-parttoast concludes every social gathering of the Skål Club of Nashville, and the recitation of its words unites those present with compatriots and peers around the world.

The leader raises a glass, gathers the staff facilitating the function, and honors them by wishing them “Happiness! Good health! Friendship! Long life! Skål!” The Scandinavian word Skål translates to cheers or good health in English and is equivalent to a toast, and this ritual occurs at Skål gatherings in 85 nations worldwide. Wherever the toast is offered, members repeat the four parts as the leaders say them, but the Nashville group adds its own touch. “Skål, y’all!” they shout.

The Skål Club of Nashville, which is celebrating its 50th year in 2025, is part of Skål International, an organization of travel and tourism professionals founded in Paris between the two world wars to promote international friendships in the hospitality industry. A stand-alone Skål club in Paris was begun in 1932, and only two years later, the idea had spread to five countries, enough that an international organization coalesced. Eleven clubs were founders. The Skål Club of Nashville is among today’s total of 300 clubs and 12,500 members globally.

“Skål is a way to link you up locally, nationally, and internationally. It is the only hospitality organization of its type that is international,” said JoAnne Ford, a Williamson County resident who has worked in the tourism industry for more than 35 years.

Ford owned a travel agency during that career, was president of the Skål Club of Nashville, and was an officer in a Skål entity representing all clubs in the United States. Involvement in Skål took her to South Africa, Cancun, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C.

“Skål takes you outside your own little sphere of contacts. You get to interact with people in other aspects of hospitality. That’s its beauty, even on the local level. Over the years, our Nashville-area members have included travel agents, hotel general managers, airline marketing executives, restaurant leaders, car rental agency owners, and more. There are companies you might not think of as hospitality, but they are,” she said.

Jeff Crabiel, president of the Skål Club of Nashville, reinforces that broad range of qualifying employment. Crabiel’s own perspective comes from his job as chief hospitality officer of Castlerock Asset Management. Its portfolio includes Westin Nashville, the Bobby Hotel, and Oak Steakhouse.

SKÅL TAKES YOU OUTSIDE YOUR OWN LITTLE SPHERE OF CONTACTS. YOU GET TO INTERACT WITH PEOPLE IN OTHER ASPECTS OF HOSPITALITY. THAT’S ITS BEAUTY, EVEN ON THE LOCAL LEVEL.

“Hospitality is big and broad, and one of our goals with Skål in Nashville is to enhance the industry as a whole. We want to increase our membership and always extend a hand of welcome. We also want to foster hospitality newcomers and prospective hospitality industry employees,” Crabiel said.

TENNESSEE PROSTART SUPPORTS HIGH SCHOOL CULINARY INSTRUCTION THROUGH VARIOUS PROGRAMS, INCLUDING AN ANNUAL CULINARY AND MANAGEMENT COMPETITION.

Financial support of Tennessee ProStart is one way the Skål Club of Nashville promotes its industry. Tennessee ProStart supports high school culinary instruction through various programs, including an annual culinary and management competition. The culinary competition challenges teams to create a three-course meal in 60 minutes, using only two butane burners and with no access to running water or electricity.

Teams in the management competition must propose a restaurant concept and defend it to a panel of industry judges. A team from Nolensville High School won the 2025 management competition, and a culinary team from the same school placed second.

On a broader level, Skål International is an affiliated member of the World Tourism Organization and a supporter of the Sustainable TourismEliminating Poverty Initiative. That initiative works on development projects in several countries to create jobs and enhance local economies.

“I feel good about being in an organization such as Skål,” said Franklin resident Pam Inman, whose career has included being chief operating officer of the American Hotel and Lodging Association, chief executive officer of the National Tour Association, president/CEO of the Tennessee and Nashville hotel and lodging associations and assistant commissioner of Tennessee Tourist Development and Tennessee State Parks.

“Skål has connected me with people in tourism I wasn’t around every day. I call it the Rotary Club of tourism. I was in the Skål Club in Washington, D.C., while I was away from Nashville for 16 years. Now that I’ve returned, the Skål Club of Nashville has gotten me back in touch with Nashville. I want the Nashville club to connect more and more people in a powerfully important industry,” Inman said. n

For information about the Skål Club of Nashville, visit NashvilleSkal.com. Interested in joining? We invite you to attend an upcoming Skål luncheon, held on the third Thursday of every month, to meet other hospitality professionals RSVP on the website.

CoQ10

VITAL FOR ENERGY, HEALTH, AND WELLNESS

Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 is a naturally occurring compound in the body essential for producing cellular energy. It comes in two forms: ubiquinone (CoQ10), the oxidized form, and ubiquinol, the reduced (active) form. The body must convert CoQ10 into ubiquinol to use it effectively in energy production. CoQ10 is crucial for the mitochondria, often referred to as the cell's powerhouses, because they generate the energy cells need to function by producing adenosine triphosphate or ATP.

Both forms of CoQ10 play a vital role in energy production and serve as antioxidants, protecting cells from oxidative damage. They help preserve cell health by reducing oxidative stress, which can lead to various diseases and conditions if left unchecked. Beyond supporting energy production, CoQ10 is involved in heart health and blood sugar regulation and may help reduce inflammation. It is naturally found in high concentrations in organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys, which have high energy demands.

CoQ10 levels naturally decrease with age and can be affected by certain medications and health conditions. Read on to learn why coenzyme Q10 is essential and how it is crucial to overall well-being.

How CoQ10 Works in the Body

CoQ10 is primarily located in cell membranes and mitochondria, especially in organs with high metabolic activity. Inside the mitochondria, CoQ10 participates in the electron transport chain, a process that creates the majority of the body’s energy, adenosine triphosphate or ATP. It acts as an electron carrier, transferring electrons between different protein complexes in the chain, which is vital for ATP production.

CoQ10 also plays a key role as a lipid-soluble antioxidant, protecting cell membranes and lipoproteins from oxidative damage, which can lead to diseases like heart disease and cancer. Its antioxidant effects are linked to its reduced form, ubiquinol, which can reduce oxidative stress, regenerate vitamins C and E, and help prevent lipid peroxidation or body fat damage.

Potential Benefits

CoQ10 and Migraine: CoQ10 supplementation has shown promise in reducing migraine frequency, severity, and duration. Clinical trials indicate that a daily dose of 400 mg of CoQ10 can significantly reduce these aspects of migraines. The effects of CoQ10 may be attributed to its ability to reduce inflammatory markers, such as TNFα and GCPR, which are involved in the pathophysiology of migraines. Additionally, when combined with other nutraceuticals like curcumin, magnesium, and riboflavin, CoQ10 may have enhanced migraineprotective effects, providing a more comprehensive approach to migraine prevention.

CoQ10 and Fatigue: In addressing fatigue across various conditions, CoQ10 supplementation has shown potential. In patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), combining 200mg/day of CoQ10 and NADH has demonstrated improvements in fatigue levels, mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, and ATP production. These benefits are attributed to CoQ10's ability to support mitochondrial activity and its antioxidant properties, which may help manage fatigue in CFS and related conditions. Additionally, studies in healthy individuals suggest that CoQ10 supplementation (100–300 mg/day) can reduce fatigue, with higher doses (around 300 mg/day) showing more pronounced effects.

For athletes, CoQ10 may offer benefits by improving exercise performance, reducing muscle damage, and minimizing exerciseinduced oxidative stress, though the results vary among individuals. CoQ10 has also been found to alleviate fatigue in patients with heart failure and fibromyalgia.

CoQ10 and Diabetes and Vascular Disease: CoQ10 is widely recognized for its potent antioxidant properties and ability to protect against various diseases, including diabetes and its associated cardiovascular complications. Current research highlights that CoQ10 exerts its beneficial effects through multiple mechanisms, including reducing oxidative stress, anti-inflammatory actions, and glucose and lipid metabolism regulation.

One of the key mechanisms through which CoQ10 operates is modulating the Nrf2/Keap1/ARE pathway. This pathway plays a pivotal role in the body's antioxidant defense system. CoQ10 can reduce diabetes-induced oxidative stress by stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes, which help mitigate cellular damage caused by free radicals. This action protects cells and supports the body’s overall metabolic function, making CoQ10 particularly valuable in managing diabetes.

Reducing Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure: Clinical studies have shown that CoQ10 supplementation can help lower systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) blood pressure. In a 10-week trial, hypertensive patients who took CoQ10 experienced significant reductions in their blood pressure by an average of 17.8 mmHg in systolic pressure and 12.0 mmHg in diastolic pressure.

The proposed mechanism by which CoQ10 supports blood pressure is by improving blood vessel function. CoQ10 helps relax blood vessels, reducing peripheral resistance — the force the heart must work against when pumping blood. This effect is believed to be due to CoQ10’s role in preserving nitric oxide (NO), a molecule that helps relax and widen blood vessels. By enhancing blood vessel function, CoQ10 promotes better blood flow and reduces overall blood pressure.

Fertility and CoQ10: Research on increasing CoQ10 has shown its potential to mitigate the effects of aging on ovarian reserve and oocyte quality in mice. CoQ10 treatment in aged females significantly delayed the depletion of ovarian follicles and restored mitochondrial function in oocytes, improving mitochondrial activity, ATP production, and reducing oxidative stress. These improvements led to higher ovulation rates and increased developmental potential of oocytes, ultimately resulting in a greater number of pups born.

CoQ10 supplementation also preserved the primordial follicle pool by preventing follicular atresia, suggesting that CoQ10 helps maintain ovarian reserve by inhibiting follicle degeneration. Moreover, CoQ10 reversed agerelated alterations in gene expression related to mitochondrial metabolism, oxidative stress, and meiotic progression, demonstrating its potential to restore key aspects of oocyte function disrupted by aging. While these findings in the mouse model are promising, the implications for human fertility remain an area for further investigation.

The Bottom Line on Statins

Statins are widely used medications that lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, reducing the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes by preventing plaque buildup and improving blood vessel function. They also offer long-term cardiovascular benefits by stabilizing plaque and reducing inflammation, especially for individuals with existing heart conditions. However, some people experience muscle-related side effects, such as muscle pain, weakness, and cramping, known as statin-induced myopathy.

Many have turned to CoQ10, a supplement believed to support muscle function and reduce muscle damage to manage these symptoms. While studies on CoQ10’s effectiveness in alleviating these symptoms provide mixed results, CoQ10 might help improve your symptoms but won’t fix the underlying muscle damage.

In conclusion, Coenzyme Q10 is an essential compound for energy production, cellular protection, and overall health. Its antioxidant properties and ability to support mitochondrial function make it beneficial for managing conditions like migraines, chronic fatigue, diabetes, and even cardiovascular disease. While CoQ10 supplementation is generally safe with few side effects, it is always recommended to consult a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen. n
