Si tal y como decía Shakespeare “el pasado no es más que un prólogo”, el presente debe ser el ensayo que viene a continuación. D. Alfonso Viera Rodríguez, fundador de la compañía y uno de los grandes impulsores de la alta joyería y la alta relojería en España, fue el autor de las primeras páginas de la historia de Saphir Joyeros. Su tenacidad y capacidad de innovación nos sirven de inspiración para crear nuestra propia revista: Saphir Mag, una publicación que nace con el objetivo de hacer partícipes a todos los apasionados del sector, clientes y amigos. No obstante, queremos ofrecer a nuestros lectores contenidos que vayan más allá de lo acaecido este año en el mundo de la joyería y la relojería. Han contribuido a ello personajes tan dispares como Rosana, una de nuestras cantantes con más repercusión internacional; o Mayte Pérez, considerada como una de las mejores Habanosommelier del mundo. Sin embargo, como sucede en los mejores cuentos, Dodo renace después de mucho tiempo para convertirse en una tierna y amplia línea de joyería, símbolo de una naturaleza que debemos proteger. La vida le regaló la oportunidad de dedicarse a la interpretación cuando ella insistía en esconderse tras la firma de sus composiciones. Cambió de opinión y acertó: en 1996, ‘Lunas Rotas’ vendió casi 2 millones de copias en nuestro país. Ahora, 16 años más tarde, continúa sobre los escenarios presentado su último trabajo: ‘¡Buenos días, mundo!’. Rosana Arbelo (Lanzarote, 1964) listens as well as she speaks, always with a smile on her lips. n este nuevo disco nos hemos atrevido a incluir más el sonido que tenemos en directo. Las producciones anteriores eran más tranquilas, más acústicas. ¿Y conceptualmente, a qué o a quién le damos los buenos días? No al mundo que tenemos, sino al mundo que se merecen todos los que están naciendo hoy y los que van a nacer mañana. “Al imposible le sobran dos letras”, reza una de sus canciones. Creo que hay que empezar a poner en marcha esa utopía humanista de la que siempre hemos hablado, porque esta realidad que tenemos hace mucho tiempo que nos avisa: no funciona. Seamos positivos: usted ha estado seis meses de gira por Latinoamérica. Sí, el balance es espectacular. Hemos estado en un montón de lugares distintos donde la gente en los conciertos se iba sudando y sonriendo a partes iguales. Ahora vuelvo a casa, que también tengo muchas ganas de estar con la gente de aquí. ¿Qué ha percibido a su regreso? Nos fuimos de España a principios de Enero y hemos vuelto hace relativamente poco. Hay altas dosis de desesperanza, y a mi me preocupa muchísimo porque con la tristeza uno se puede pelear, pero el desaliento no cicatriza tan fácilmente. En todos los sitios, vayas donde vayas, se está pidiendo un mundo que no sea del ‘todo a cualquier precio’, un mundo que tiene mucho más que ver con valores y principios. ¿Reflejan esa conciencia crítica sus letras? Sí, reflejan que uno está vivo, afortunadamente, y que va pensando y sintiendo las cosas que tienen más que ver con esta época y las emociones que estamos sintiendo mayoritariamente todos.

I think that we have to begin to work towards this humanistic utopia that we’ve always spoken of, because this reality that we have has been warning us for some time now: it doesn’t work. Let’s be positive: you have been touring Latin America for six months. Yes, overall it was wonderful. We’ve been in tons of different places where the people at the concerts were sweating and smiling in equal measure. Now I’m going back home, because I’m dying to be with the people here, too. What have you noticed on your return? We left Spain in early January and we returned just recently. There is a strong sense of desperation, and I’m very concerned because you can fight with sadness, but discouragement is harder to heal. Everywhere I go, no matter where it is, a world that was not “everything at any price”, a world that has much more to do with values and principles, is being lost. Do your lyrics reflect your consciousness? Yes, they reflect that you’re alive, fortunately, and that you’re thinking and feeling things that have more to do with this time and the emotions most of us are feeling now. Do you feel that you’re more a writer than a singer? As a little girl I always thought about being an author, more than anything else. When my family and friends said that I should make a record, I thought “they’re just saying that

¿Se siente más escritora que cantante? De chiquita siempre me planteé ser autora, por encima de todo. Cuando la familia y los amigos me decían que grabara un disco, yo pensaba: “me lo dicen porque me quieren”. Pues con ‘Lunas Rotas’ no le fue nada mal. El público es el que me ha enseñado a tenerme cariño como intérprete. Además, cantar me ha regalado lo que más me puede gustar del mundo, que es ver a la gente saltando y sintiendo a través de una canción. ¿Cómo gestionó aquel éxito tan repentino? La gente me echaba en cara que por qué no hacía más canciones o aportaba más cosas. Dije ¡no!, porque dentro de las prisas que te regala un disco como ‘Lunas Rotas’, necesitaba saborearlo. Podía haber sido mucho más frenético si no hubiera tenido una familia y unos amigos que me ayudaron a seguir un poco con los pies en el suelo. Ahora ya no se hablan de discos vendidos sino de descargas. Bueno, cuando publicamos ‘Lunas Rotas’ había CD’s, pero es que pocos años antes había vinilos. El movimiento de la música entre creador y público está cambiando de formato, y aunque creo que estamos a mitad de camino, estamos viviendo un momento súper bonito. Es usted muy optimista. Digamos que hay un muro blanco donde todo el que llega cuelga un PostIt. Yo apuesto por Internet, por que la música tenga un precio asequible y que en paralelo el músico conserve sus derechos. Gracias a ese muro la gente está al día, la asistencia a conciertos y festivales es altísima. Sí sí, hay mucho movimiento. Es que lo que está mal es el concepto, es el sistema laboral que se ha implantado alrededor, no tiene nada que ver con el arte en sí. Hay mucho talento con ganas de decir y compartir cosas. ¡El mundo no va a vivir sin música! ¿Qué piensa de ese talento que se exhibe en programas como ‘Número Uno’ o ‘La Voz’ ? No lo he visto porque hemos estado fuera y le ha dado tiempo de empezar y terminar antes. Bueno, pues Operación Triunfo. Yo pasé por la escuela y todo lo que vi es a unos chavales con muchas ganas de aprender y de dedicarse a la música. En su momento, mientras OT solamente fue eso, un lugar donde la gente iba a buscar una oportunidad, no me pareció mala idea. ¿Qué músicos le gustaban en su

your formative years? I was born in a very unusual place. The Canary Islands are geographically close to Africa, so if you moved the dials on the radio you could listen to music from there. In addition to that, I was marked by being born in a family with ten members, all of them older than me and listening to different music... I listened to everything from the Rolling Stones to the Beatles, and even Bob Dylan, not to mention my father’s ranchera music and my mother’s tangos. I couldn’t just choose one thing. How have you managed to have such a successful career? I wish I knew and could write it down like a cookbook. You do it by working a lot, trying to make sure that each word and each melody comes from honesty. Las Islas Canarias tienen cercanía geográfica a África, con lo que mueves los diales en la radio y se escucha mucha música de allí. A parte de eso, me marcó el hecho de nacer en una familia donde hay 10 personas, todas más grandes que yo, escuchando música distinta…. me paseé desde los Rolling hasta Los Beatles, pasando por Bob Dylan, hasta la música ranchera que escuchaba mi padre o el tango de mi madre. No sería justo decantarme por una cosa. ¿Cómo se logra tener una carrera tan exitosa? Ojalá se supiera y pudiera hacerse como un libro de recetas de cocina. Se llega trabajando muchísimo, intentando que cada palabra y cada melodía que te sale brote de la honestidad. Aunque no sé si eso es suficiente, supongo que también son importantes el trabajo, la perseverancia, el deseo de compartir lo que uno siente y por supuesto una dosis de suerte.

Hay una serie de edificios de visita obligada, como el Paço Municipal (concluido a fines del siglo XVII), el Palacio Rio Branco (construido en el local de la Casa de los Gobernadores en 1919) y el Elevador Lacerda, ampliado en la década de 1930. Por su parte, el área de Pelourinho alberga algunos de los museos más importantes de la ciudad, como el Museo Abelardo Rodrigues, la Fundación Casa de Jorge Amado, El Museo Da Cidade, El Museo Das Portas do Carmo y el Museo Tempostal. Y por la noche, es el turno de Dioniso, que se manifiesta en forma de una gran movida, con bares de reggae, ensayos de murgas afro, Ruedas de Capoeira y toda especie de shows y ritmos. Otro de los destinos más bellos de Salvador es la costa. Las playas de la capital presentan una gran diversidad ecológica, variando desde tranquilas ensenadas, ideales para nadar, practicar deportes de vela, buceo y pesca submarina; hasta mares con fuertes olas, perfectas para el Surf. Destacan la plata de Ribeira, Porto da Barra y la plata de Corsário, entre otras. Si lo que desea es algo más paradisíaco, no dude en volar hacia Boipeba, una isla que forma parte del archipiélago de Tinharé (se puede acceder a él desde Salvador con un vuelo de 30 minutos) y que fue reconocida por la UNESCO como Reserva de la Biosfera y Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
Salvador Salvador de Bahía, the third largest city in Brazil, is located in the northeast of the country, 1600 km from Rio de Janeiro. Its centre still conserves a rich history permeated by the life of the monarchy and the slaves’ struggle. It is divided into three areas: from the Praça Municipal to the Praça de São Francisco, the Pelourinho neighbourhood and from Praça do Carmo to Praça de São Francisco. There is a series of buildings which are must-sees, such as the Paço Municipal (finished in the late 17th century), the Rio Branco Palace (built on the grounds of the Governors’ House in 1919) and the Elevador Lacerda, which was expanded in the 1930s. Another of the most beautiful destinations in Salvador is its beaches. The beaches in the capital boast wide ecological diversity, ranging from quiet inlets ideal for swimming, sailing, diving and underwater fishing to seas with strong waves, perfect for surfing. The most prominent beaches are Ribeira, Porto da Barra and Corsário, among others. If what you seek is something more akin to paradise, you must definitely fly to Boipeba, an island that is part of the Tinharé archipelago (you can reach it from Salvador via a 30-minute flight) which was recognised by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve and a Human Heritage Site.
